I Could Have Been A Dreamer - Dio

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 19 February 2004 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't remember hearing any of the songs that have been listed so far (even though the 80s were my high school/college years, when I was relatively aware of what was on both mainstream and college radio).

So maybe the following are less forgotten. But I never see them mentioned or showing up on compilations:

The Members - "Working Girl"
Torch Song - "Don't Look Now"

(But i can't remember hearing any of the songs

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Thursday, 19 February 2004 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

mine will all be courtesy of VH1 Classic

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 19 February 2004 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Crap, accidentally hit "send" too soon

The last bit of my post is redundant obviously, plus I was going to note that Wm Orbit took Torch Song in a very different (ambient) direction after the early track I've listed.

...i had "new message" - the lucy show but was beaten as i wrote :)

william (william), Thursday, 19 February 2004 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm having too much fun with this, how about "nimby" by chalk circle and "pure" by the lightning seeds

metfigga (metfigga), Thursday, 19 February 2004 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

mania has always been one of my favorite albums from the 80's but it's near impossible to find anyone that has ever even heard of the lucy show. right before it closed i was able to buy the lp and the new message 12" from what was a very weird tower records outlet store near my work. they had the strangest collection of unwanted music at this place.

metfigga (metfigga), Thursday, 19 February 2004 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

art bergmann - "empty house"
slow - "i broke the circle"

Sherry Kean - I Want You Back

Captain Sleep (Captain Sleep), Friday, 20 February 2004 11:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Jacob I did some research into the Wilkinson thing (i.e. googled it) - it seems to have been on a short lived record label set up by Chas Chandler (ex-Animals I think) and some pub rock geezers, Wilkinson was their only hit. No info whatsoever on her or why the record sounds like it does.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 20 February 2004 12:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Lotus Eaters - 'First picture of you'

Bidfurd, Friday, 20 February 2004 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh God, this is very odd - I've been singing some of these songs all week - in particular "Questionaire" by Chas Jankel, seem to remember the video was always on "Saturday Superstore", very much in the style of "Accidents will happen" if I remember correctly. And someone mentioned the first two Freur singles (when most only noticed the first one).

On a side note, does anyone remember a single issued in 1983 which was sung by a girl whose chorus was just her shouting "What a wally!"? Got a lot of play on Radio Luxembourg at the time, but I never saw a copy or heard of it since.

Rob M (Rob M), Friday, 20 February 2004 14:00 (twenty-two years ago)

If anyone has a copy of Icehouse's "Electric Blue," I'd appreciate a copy via YSI...

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Sunday, 2 April 2006 12:43 (twenty years ago)

Only ten? Oh man! Can Dr. C and Mark Grout go first?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Sunday, 2 April 2006 19:05 (twenty years ago)

what counts as "largely forgotten" seems kind of arbitrary (and probably also depends on what country you're in), but a few off the top of my head:

eyes of a stranger -- payolas
switchin' to glide/this beat goes on -- kings (i see "switchin' to glide" mentioned above, but it really needs the b-side)
stop the cavalry -- jona lewie

also, i'll tell t0dd steed someone thought to mention "ethiopian jokes," he'll prolly be flattered.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Sunday, 2 April 2006 19:46 (twenty years ago)

6. "Static," James Brown

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Sunday, 2 April 2006 22:23 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah, I don't have "Electric Blue" on mp3 either!! I have "Hey Little Girl", "Great Summer Land", and "No Promises", but I don't have "Electric Blue". It would rule if I could get a YSI of "Electric Blue" too, esp since I'm too lazy to fire up any file sharing doohickey at the moment. In return, I could share an mpg copy of the "No Promises" video that I also have on my HD.

See Me, Repeat Me (Dee the Lurker), Sunday, 2 April 2006 22:32 (twenty years ago)

Oh, and "Eyes Of A Stranger" = forgotten?! Really?? That's too bad.

See Me, Repeat Me (Dee the Lurker), Sunday, 2 April 2006 22:33 (twenty years ago)

Hmm. I almost fell asleep at an Icehouse gig once. But I do love "We Can Get Together."

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Sunday, 2 April 2006 22:34 (twenty years ago)

And John Oates cowrote "Electric Blue"!

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Sunday, 2 April 2006 22:36 (twenty years ago)

And John Oates cowrote "Electric Blue"!

No way! That's awesome! :) Talk about learning something about a song or album that completely changes the context of said song/album (this time it's for the better).

Ok, you know what? I don't have this song on mp3, but I *do* have it as a cassingle (anyone remember those?) and I am going to go right now to my stereo and play it. Actually, I have the full album itself (Man Of Colours) on cassette, but it's in one of the trundle boxes I have pushed underneath my bed, whereas the cassingle is actually on display in this cassette rack I have in my bedroom, so it'll be easier for lazy ol' me to dig that baby up.

See Me, Repeat Me (Dee the Lurker), Sunday, 2 April 2006 22:56 (twenty years ago)

Marc Almond -- Days of Pearly Spencer
Billy Ocean -- Carribean Queen
The Rave-Ups -- Radio

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Sunday, 2 April 2006 23:16 (twenty years ago)

Billy Ocean -- Carribean Queen

I hear this all the time! The one I don't hear is "Loverboy."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Sunday, 2 April 2006 23:20 (twenty years ago)

I never hear it enough!

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Sunday, 2 April 2006 23:26 (twenty years ago)

Ok, OMG, I just secured me a copy of the Australian 12" version of "Electric Blue" on Some File-Sharing Doohickey, and it's supremely awesome and amazing and lovely and wonderful and yaaaaay all at once!

Also: I used to hear Billy Ocean's "Loverboy" ALL THE TIME on this flashback syndicated radio station that used to air in the mid - late '90s called "The Amazin' '80s". I used to make it a point to listen to that program, no matter how many times the whole of the broadcast would consist of stuff I'd heard a thousand and one times before, because it was really the only time I could hear the '80s pop/rock hits I loved, plus I thought the guy who hosted it had a nice voice. (I totally forgot what that guy's name was.) Anyway, he would have several songs he would play a lot -- one of them was that "Loverboy" song, and another would be Greg Kihn's "The Breakup Song", which one could also say is comparatively "forgotten" (compared to "Jeopardy", that is).

See Me, Repeat Me (Dee the Lurker), Sunday, 2 April 2006 23:38 (twenty years ago)

See Me, if you can send "Electric Blue" via YSI, I'll love you eternally.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Sunday, 2 April 2006 23:46 (twenty years ago)

(Correction: That's "The Amazing '80s". I misheard -- and wow, it's still on the air!!!)

Also, just in case someone's interested in the aforementioned Australian 12" of "Electric Blue"....

(xpost!) Ta-daaaaa.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Monday, 3 April 2006 03:44 (twenty years ago)

I've always had a theory that "Electric Blue" wasn't forgotten by Gwen Stefani when she recorded "Cool."

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 3 April 2006 12:33 (twenty years ago)

I wonder if that Australian 12" of "Electric Blue" is the same 12" that I have. Hope not, since it's one of my favorite songs of the 80s and I'd love to hear a new extended version.

It's basically an extended version of the 7-inch; not much different.

Brenda Russell - Piano In The Dark

Oh man!

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Monday, 3 April 2006 13:01 (twenty years ago)

"Piano in the Dark" is one of those perennial dentist's office lite-rock songs I hear from time to time. What about "Into the Night" by Benny Mardones? That's another dentist's office song.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 3 April 2006 13:18 (twenty years ago)

Yes, I have spent a lot of time at the dentist's office.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 3 April 2006 13:19 (twenty years ago)

I hear "Into the Night" pretty often; same with Benjamin Orr's "Stay the Night."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Monday, 3 April 2006 13:25 (twenty years ago)

Ok. Never mind then. But have you seen photos of Benny Mardones lately? I don't want him to pick me up, show me love or take me into the night. Then again, I'm not 16. He probably wouldn't want to anyway.

"Into the Night" is one of the most repulsive songs ever written.

I play it whenever I'm maudlinly drunk and have people over and remember singing the entire thing the whole way through with some guy in a record shop when I was a student.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 17:11 (twenty years ago)

I'm not sure if these are 'forgotten' but I'll just list my underrated favourites that I hardly hear anywhere, anymore...

Stay Young- INXS
Into You Like A Train- Psychedelic Furs

Miranda Leigh (Miranda Leigh), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 00:07 (twenty years ago)

All this talk of Icehouse brought this flood of forgotten Australian singles...

Sweet And Sour - The Takeaways
Make Me Smile - Nick Barker & The Reptiles
Soul Revival - Johnny Diesel & The Injectors
Stuck On You - Paul Norton
Come On Let's Go - Cockroaches (aka THE WIGGLES)
Soul Kind Of Feeling - Dynamic Hepnotics
Bop Girl - Pat Wilson
Rain - Dragon
Stimulation - Wa Wa Nee
I Was Only 19 - Redgum (it's kind of out of place, but I just remembered it...)

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 03:44 (twenty years ago)

That Australian 12" of "Electric Blue" is pretty good, but it's much different than the one I have, which actually makes a somewhat significant break from the original structurally and musically. I think it's about as good as the 7", which isn't something I say lightly.

"Electric Blue (Extended Version)"

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 04:03 (twenty years ago)

"Cruel To Be Kind" is not at all forgotten, and not from the 80s either.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 08:48 (twenty years ago)

Karel Failka - "Hey Matthew"
Stan Ridgeway - "Camouflage"
Rational Youth - "Saturday In Silesia"
Hollywood Beyond - "What's The Colour Of Money"

JohnFoxxsJuno (JohnFoxxsJuno), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 09:07 (twenty years ago)

Patto: Black And White

Oh Geir, how COULD you? It makes "Ebony And Ivory" sound positively subtle!

"Black and white, it's like day and night, there's no wrong just right, in black and white..."

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 10:29 (twenty years ago)

"Black and white, it's like day and night, there's no wrong just right, in black and white..."

That's not as bad as:

"Black stations, white stations, feet on the floor. Stand up and face the music, this is 1984!"

:)

JTS (JTS), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 16:38 (twenty years ago)

"Nights Over Egypt", Jones Girls

Still played at every single retro dance night in Toronto.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 18:18 (twenty years ago)

"Black and white, it's like day and night, there's no wrong just right, in black and white..."

It's still a great song though, with a very typical mid 80s synth sound. :)

And I like "Ebony & Ivory" too...

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 20:36 (twenty years ago)

Stevie Nicks - "I Can't Wait"

"Mama Used to Say," Junior

Oh, that's a great choice, Rickey. FYI, the same guy who produced that song also produced the original version of Language's "We're Celebrating" AND was the keyboardist in the band.

together in electric dreams PHILIP OAKEY/GIORGIO MORODER

Aw, m.coleman, I LOVELOVELOVELOVE that song TO DEATH. It makes me feel alive when I hear it. :)

Alfred, I'm sorry the remix didn't live up to my hyping of it. I was exuberant because I hadn't heard a remix of the song before, I suppose. But I do now have the regular "Electric Blue" -- are you still interested?

"Into the Night" is one of the most repulsive songs ever written.

I third that emotion (The Milkmaid seconded it). A song from the viewpoint of a sexual predator = not even Milli Vanilli was as hate-worthy. BTW, I don't think "Shake You Down" can be considered "forgotten". It's on all of the '80s retrospective compilations -- deservedly so, actually.

"What's He Got", The Producers
Into You Like A Train- Psychedelic Furs
Device - "Hanging On a Heart Attack"

Yay! I ADORE all three of those songs and am glad they got mentioned!!

The Good Dr. Bill, thank you for sharing the regular extended version of "Electric Blue". :)

See Me, Repeat Me (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 6 April 2006 00:32 (twenty years ago)

I enjoyed the "Electric Blue" remix, See Me, Repeat Me; if I haven't mentioned, I apologize!

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 6 April 2006 00:43 (twenty years ago)

It's ok, Alfred.

See Me, Repeat Me (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 6 April 2006 03:25 (twenty years ago)

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Wednesday, 5 October 2022 23:27 (three years ago)

The Men at Work, Romeo Void, and Wall of Voodoo are not all forgotten by me, the latter is their signature tune

Josefa, Wednesday, 5 October 2022 23:45 (three years ago)

Yeah, but your knowledge is deep. I don't think many people could name it anymore.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Wednesday, 5 October 2022 23:48 (three years ago)

Thought about INXS, "Don't Change"

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Wednesday, 5 October 2022 23:49 (three years ago)

Thank you, Jimbeaux.

But again, “Don’t Change,” I mean that’s one of the first two INXS titles that occurs to me.

Josefa, Thursday, 6 October 2022 00:05 (three years ago)

To me too, but 99% of the time you'll get people referring to something from Kick, X or maybe Listen Like Thieves.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Thursday, 6 October 2022 00:07 (three years ago)

And I forgot to mention, “Ball of Confusion,” that was a huge song to me in the ‘80s. Not embarrassed to say I heard that before I heard the Temptations one.

Josefa, Thursday, 6 October 2022 00:10 (three years ago)

LOL

Me too. I suspect we are of the same vintage. But I'm not sure how many people would think of that song when they think of LnR . . . if they think of LnR at all.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Thursday, 6 October 2022 00:13 (three years ago)

Coincidentally just yesterday I heard “Kundalini Express” by LnR in the wild and thought, jesu fucking cristo, that was a great track

Josefa, Thursday, 6 October 2022 00:30 (three years ago)

That song pops into my head with surprising regularity. That whole album is a trip, although imho not as good as the first one.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Thursday, 6 October 2022 00:34 (three years ago)

Cheri - Murphy's Law (UK #13, US #39, 1982)

― houdini said, Wednesday, October 5, 2022 7:04 PM

I love any song with that "Jam On It" vocal effect (but that's probably because I was 11 when those songs came out).
