As you probably know, Brian Wilson is currently touring the long-awaited SMiLE, and if like me you couldn't afford to spend £50 on a ticket + travel, there is at least one bootleg available to listen to.

Torrent here: http://www.sharingthegroove.org/msgboard/attachment.php?s=&postid=541445

Or it is availble on S__ls__k, filename is: Smile22004.mp3

Enjoy!

How does torrent work?

ModJ (ModJ), Monday, 23 February 2004 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Well?

ModJ (ModJ), Monday, 23 February 2004 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

It was also posted on USENET yesterday in alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.beach-boys. I'm listening to it now.

ModJ (ModJ), Monday, 23 February 2004 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

No, but hold on, I'll put it online somewhere for you in a sec.

ModJ (ModJ), Monday, 23 February 2004 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll get this when I get home. newsgroups reviews were beyond positive. People? How was it?

http://www.worksongs.com/smilelive22004.mp3

I'll leave it online for the next 45 mins. Let me know when you finish grabbing it.

maypang (maypang), Monday, 23 February 2004 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Eeeeeeeee! Almost done

ModJ (ModJ), Monday, 23 February 2004 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

ModJ (ModJ), Monday, 23 February 2004 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm downloading it rightg now thanx maypang!!! yay i can't wait!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 23 February 2004 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks dude! I got it too.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 23 February 2004 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

No problem. The sound quality's not the best. I can't wait for a proper cd release of one of these shows. Hopefully they won't have to "sweeten" things up too much in post production.

maypang (maypang), Monday, 23 February 2004 18:43 (twenty-two years ago)

M@tt, I just deleted the file off my server. Hope you got it all.

maypang (maypang), Monday, 23 February 2004 18:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I got it thanks! u rock! GO INTERNET!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 23 February 2004 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh that was sick

ModJ (ModJ), Monday, 23 February 2004 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

oh this is nuts. I hope he tours this in the US. although I still have my doubts about this being how the record would have come if it were released in 67, this is as definitive as it gets. who are the other vocalists?

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Monday, 23 February 2004 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok, I haven't had the chance to listen to this yet. But am I right to be wondering how many of the creative decisions w/ respect to the Smile material were made by Brian? I mean, to an extent, I think it'd be interesting to see ANY performance of this stuff — simply b/c it's fantastic material (wonderful, even).

Still, do we have any proof that this is anything other than a bunch of Brian fanatics doing their own interpretation of it and propping Brian up in front of them? Sorry to be a downer...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Monday, 23 February 2004 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

wilson and parks wrote new music and new lyrics to link sections together. from what I've read I doubt very much that anyone would have been able to convince brian to do any of this if he didn't want to as this material was a source of considerable pain for him for years.

Just finished listening to it and it's pretty amazing

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Monday, 23 February 2004 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

The new Mojo has Brian on the cover and it sounds like he is definitely in the driver's seat....

I am in the middle of it and am pretty blown away so far...it's actually working as an album....I was worried it would be mixed up or half-baked....very odd and pretty.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 23 February 2004 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

the child is the father of man/surf's up section is astounding

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Monday, 23 February 2004 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought it was pretty nice. Too bad the lyrics are still just as terrible as they ever were though.

maypang (maypang), Monday, 23 February 2004 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

this makes me sad with jealousy

dean! (deangulberry), Monday, 23 February 2004 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Wahh! I want to hear.

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Monday, 23 February 2004 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

He'll play Toronto, right?

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Monday, 23 February 2004 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

this thread is like a cancerous tumor on my heart.

dean! (deangulberry), Monday, 23 February 2004 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess he's touring the US in the fall but no word on if it will be a smile tour; it would be stupid for it not to be, but who knows.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Monday, 23 February 2004 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn! Well, that is both interesting and, frankly, unexpected. I take my cynicism back and hope the shit comes here to the States!

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Monday, 23 February 2004 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I have to admit, though — it's a little curious how to-a-tee this performance is to the bootlegs I've heard. Like, the track listing and everything.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Monday, 23 February 2004 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm just glad he didn't try to "finish" it. I don't even want to imagine the way that might've turned out.

maypang (maypang), Monday, 23 February 2004 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't Brian (and Parks, and whoever else is in on this thing) recording a proper studio album of this? Or are they going back to the original tapes and fleshing those out? And won't that be pretty much the most anticipated release ever?

dleone (dleone), Monday, 23 February 2004 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't heard anything about that. at the most I'd expect some kindo of official compilation of existing studio material from 66 as well as a new live album.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Monday, 23 February 2004 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I think they've said they'll decide about how to proceed when the tour's done with. It wouldn't amaze me if they put out a live "Smile" then went back and finished the studio version, enabling them to sell it again. As usual, Harvey will know more than me because... because he will.

I'm off to see it again tonight, and I'm gearing up to start the wibbling all over agin.

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 09:45 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/news/04-02/24.shtml

cws (cws), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

That's based on some BBC online article, which goes on to say "Negotiations are said to be under way for an album release." Unless I'm mistaken, I believe those negotiations have been under way since 1966.

Granted, this is a little different, given that he's been out touring the thing. Me, I'm just looking forward to...the lawsuits.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

What's going to happen to the original songs -- will they be on the new album? I mean, it's hard to improve on the pre-existing versions of Cabinessence and Surf's Up...

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know if there will be lawsuits, as they weren't even using Mike Love's lyrics for Good Vibrations (instead using Tony Asher's originals). I think the only composers would be Wilson, Parks and Asher.

dleone (dleone), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Agreed — and Brian was supposedly never happy with Surf's Up. Not that I wouldn't be interested, but this seems to open a serious can of worms.

And if the live show is any indication, they've sort of assumed that Smile was pretty much done when it was abandoned, barring a few parts here and there. And, as fascinating as I find the stuff, I find that very hard to believe. Like, I'll grant that Brian's backing tracks were as interesting as other people's finished songs. But does that make them finished songs?

I don't know if there will be lawsuits, as they weren't even using Mike Love's lyrics for Good Vibrations (instead using Tony Asher's originals). I think the only composers would be Wilson, Parks and Asher.

Yeah, but that didn't stop him from holding up the Pet Sounds box...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

he can't sue if we kill him first!

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Mmmm, good point...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah but Love cowrote some of the Pet Sounds stuff

dleone (dleone), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 18:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Mike Love, not war.

maypang (maypang), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Didn't Mike Love write Big Sur? If so, the version on Landlocked makes up (almost) for the rest 'a him. Man that's a gorgeous tune.

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 21:20 (twenty-two years ago)

He once said that he helped write Back in the USSR. F him.

maypang (maypang), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

The bootleg-faithfulness is explicable I think - as I understand it once BW had decided to do it, Wondermints Guy sat down with him and basically played back all the bootleg shit he'd collected on a laptop and they worked from there. Which is probably why what I just heard live (wibble) sounded like a kind of Smile DJ mix. But I think it worked 100%.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 23:50 (twenty-two years ago)

The wibbling continues! And yay further reports! :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 23:53 (twenty-two years ago)

like they were playing a DJ mix live I should have said - no DJing was involved (somewhere Cornelius is weeping I'm sure).

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyway it was GREBT.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

if I get to see this performed live I will never have to see any live music ever again

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 23:57 (twenty-two years ago)

By the way I would very much like to get hold of the bootleg file of this - im mymble2 on soulseek if anyone has it...

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

i'll have it up in about nine hours if you don't find it by then

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 00:05 (twenty-two years ago)

And you might find it in other spots, Tico.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 00:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Got it now!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 01:04 (twenty-two years ago)

FULLY DOWNLOADED.

Brian hit some bum notes here and there, but MY GOD, such a thrill to hear him play it live after all these years, and with a sympathetic band that not only covered up Brians clams as best they could but were actually up to the task of reproducing the Smile material in a, you know, live environment. Fucking awesome.

That's not to suggest that Brian fluffed his way through the material, propped up by his hired band.. Far from it, he sounded absolutely great for the most part.

Does anyone know which date the torrent at the top of this thread is from?

retort pouch (retort pouch), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 02:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Got it now!
-- Tico Tico (ticoticoil...), February 25th, 2004. (Tico Tico)

don't mention it ;-)

pete b. (pete b.), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 09:08 (twenty-two years ago)

This is . . . wow.

I totally didn't expect this to be anywhere near as good as it is, particularly having listened to some of the seemingly endless versions of Smile that have surfaced over the past few years. Totally loving it. Is that rockist?

J (Jay), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

the split second when the reprise of Prayer's "ah" turns into the "ah" at the beginning of Good Vibrations is godlike and now my favorite segue in all of recorded music. It sounds so obvious, but I don't think anyone ever hypothesized it before, but it's so perfect, it adds to the authenticity of this version of Smile. A beautiful, beautiful moment.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 23:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I want to hear it! Can anyone else put it up? I am scared of torrent.

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 26 February 2004 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, I've listened to it a few times and it's really amazing...I'm not enough of Beach Boys expert to really add anything to this discussion, but I will say this is a really interesting, really amazing piece of music.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 26 February 2004 00:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been so skeptical of Wilson praise for so long...is this really the goods?

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 26 February 2004 01:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not sure what your tastes are, but I think anyone who really likes Pet Sounds will definitely want to hear this new Smile thing.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 26 February 2004 01:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I want to hear it! Can anyone else put it up? I am scared of torrent.

mm, okay I'm gonna leave this up for about three hours.

retort pouch (retort pouch), Thursday, 26 February 2004 01:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Bump for the Wilson crew. I'll request the mods remove the above link at midnight but I'll leave the file there 'til the morning, so anyone who begins to download it while the link is still there should be able to get the file ok.

retort pouch (retort pouch), Thursday, 26 February 2004 02:45 (twenty-two years ago)

So now I've got to pay £60 to see him at the SECC. You bastards.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 26 February 2004 02:47 (twenty-two years ago)

It's gonna be worth it, let's face it.

Wait. You mean tickets are still available? Fuck me, now I've got to come up with sixty quid AND plane tickets across the atlantic? Shite.

retort pouch (retort pouch), Thursday, 26 February 2004 02:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Well it looked like there were but to be honest I haven't let myself check properly.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 26 February 2004 02:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Oo no, there are still tickets available according to this page. Bristol, Glasgow, Newcastle, Liverpool and Birmingham still aren't sold out... Dammit, I wish I hadn't checked now.

retort pouch (retort pouch), Thursday, 26 February 2004 03:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Thank You Retort Pouch

(Jon L), Thursday, 26 February 2004 03:05 (twenty-two years ago)

flows perfectly. really is a symphony.

still confused by the pitchfork article. will the fall 2004 release be a reconstruction of the original recordings, or a new recording of this setlist? hoping for the former. though that would certainly be a lot of active work.

(Jon L), Thursday, 26 February 2004 04:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know if there will be lawsuits, as they weren't even using Mike Love's lyrics for Good Vibrations (instead using Tony Asher's originals). I think the only composers would be Wilson, Parks and Asher.

Well, they did actually use the Love-penned "I'm pickin' up good vibrations" line instead of the frankly inferior "Good, good, good, good vibrations yeah!" line which leads me to think that M. Love will be getting a few royalties.. Hopefully Mr. Love will have the good sense to see that the CD/DVD of this tour will sell bazillions and won't want to jeopardize that by throwing a lawsuit-shaped spanner into the elegant spokes of the SMiLE juggernaut.

retort pouch (retort pouch), Thursday, 26 February 2004 04:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Mike Love's a good guy. He'd never stoop to such levels. Oh, wait..

maypang (maypang), Thursday, 26 February 2004 04:57 (twenty-two years ago)

thanx 4 the download.

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 26 February 2004 05:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I am no longer big on the whole p2p/torrent thing but i was wondering if someone could help me aquire this smile show. I would appreciate it very much.

wallace carothers, Saturday, 28 February 2004 02:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I have this show indexed into individual tracks on slsk. Before the RIAA has my head on platter, you can grab it from me (username dleone).

wallace, email me

retort pouch (retort pouch), Saturday, 28 February 2004 04:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I want to read reviews from each and every one of the 47 people who downloaded all 43megs of SMiLE from my webspace. SPEAK UP, fuckers.

retort pouch (retort pouch), Saturday, 28 February 2004 05:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, really.

retort pouch (retort pouch), Saturday, 28 February 2004 05:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Mr Pouch,

I skimmed through what I downloaded 'to check it was all there' without really listening to it.

Then I decided (see 'Anticipate...' thread) that I really needed to see it live - so I'll listen to it next weekend after I've seen Brian do it in the flesh.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Saturday, 28 February 2004 08:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh god, I feel like such a heel now.

retort pouch (retort pouch), Saturday, 28 February 2004 08:38 (twenty-two years ago)

*raises hand sheepishly*

Thank you retort pouch. I'm one of the 43. The worst part is, while I'm very grateful for the chance to hear this legendary music, I end up having the same mixed feelings about Smile that I do about the rest of the Brian Wilson/Beach Boys stuff I've heard.

To me, Smile live is, hmmm, a little too much like music for the High School Play written by a very talented 16-year-old. Some great bits, some less great bits, the whole thing cobbled together in a frequently awkward fashion. Not much of a review, I realize, but I'm neither a die-hard fan nor a knowledgeable critic, just a bystander whose curiosity was intensified by all the excited posts in this thread.

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Saturday, 28 February 2004 09:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm gutted. After months of trying to persuade my wife that I really should go to the Bristol gig, she finally gives in today and once I've delved into the website a bit further it's bloody sold out.

Rob M (Rob M), Saturday, 28 February 2004 11:17 (twenty-two years ago)

That's what you get for asking your wife permission.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Sunday, 29 February 2004 07:54 (twenty-two years ago)

So, let's catalogue the stuff on this that's new/not on any of the boots...

The "Whoo-Whoo" train bit.,
The "Ocean Liner" thing at the beginning of "Worms"...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Sunday, 29 February 2004 07:58 (twenty-two years ago)

The "Wonderin'" section in "Wonderful,"
The bit of "Child Is The Father" in "Look" (or whichever one that is).

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Sunday, 29 February 2004 08:02 (twenty-two years ago)

For that matter, the vocals on all of "Look" (and, again, whatever the hell that is)...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Sunday, 29 February 2004 08:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Vocal on the verse of "Child"...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Sunday, 29 February 2004 08:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Lyrics to "I Wanna Be Around"...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Sunday, 29 February 2004 08:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Lyrics to "Holiday" (including some "Rock, Rock, Roll...")

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Sunday, 29 February 2004 08:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Whoah, these new lyrics to the Water Chant -- dunno what I think of those...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Sunday, 29 February 2004 08:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey Pouch,
I believe I'm one of these 43 souls you've helped, thanx !
Well, from a "technical" point of view, it's good (for a bootleg, I mean). As for the rest, I had a ticket for the saturday gig but couldn't make it... and after hearing the live recording, I've just bought a ticket for the parisian gig !
It really seems amazing and I can't wait to be at the gig...

AleXTC (AleXTC), Monday, 1 March 2004 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a good quality audience recording, for sure. As to the show itself, the SMiLE section is astonishing - the rest of it could be a tribute band, if tribute bands fucked around with arrangements to the detriment of the songs. The final encore section was painful at times, Help Me Rhonda sounded like the house band on Summertime Special.

But SMiLE, I repeat, was astounding. And yes, the backing band do eat vegetables to provide the instrumentation on Vege-Tables. Highlight undoubtedly Look/Child Is Father Of The Man/Surf's Up .

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 5 March 2004 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
Hey guys, I've been re-listening to all my "SMiLE!" bootlegs since I heard about the London tour, and the thought of acquiring a copy of the live show is blowin' my mind; you dig it? If someone here would be kind enough to provide a download for me (I'm on a high speed connection), I'd be greatly indebt! Oh boy, I can't wait :)!

Joshua Gehling, Saturday, 17 April 2004 03:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Josh - sent you an e-mail with details on where to get it.

Jeff Cook (Bro_Danielson), Saturday, 17 April 2004 10:05 (twenty-one years ago)

That would be great if someone could reseed the torrent file or help me out in getting the concert. I'm on a high-speed connection as well.

Skip, Thursday, 22 April 2004 05:00 (twenty-one years ago)

three years pass...

Anyone listened to the new song on his website?

jaymc, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 15:44 (eighteen years ago)

hey sounds kinda good! what's the deal here -- van dyke parks is involved, right?

tylerw, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 15:55 (eighteen years ago)

I think so.

jaymc, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 15:56 (eighteen years ago)

"That Lucky Old Sun (A Narrative)" is the title...just REEKS of Van Dyke Parks!

dan selzer, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 16:06 (eighteen years ago)

Van Dyke isn't involved with this particular number; it was co-written with Scott Bennett from his backing combo. I think Parks may be writing some of the spoken word interludes from the soon-come TLOS. He's also co-written a tune called "Live Let Live" with Brian, from the soundtrack of something called "An Arctic Tale".

But, yes, the new song is really remarkable.

harveyw, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 16:10 (eighteen years ago)

yes, curious about new record -- hard to tell about production from stream

Dominique, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 16:25 (eighteen years ago)

"That Lucky Old Sun (A Narrative)" is the title...just REEKS of Van Dyke Parks!

It also seemingly quotes the old standard, "That Lucky Old Sun (Just Rolls Around Heaven All Day)" (which I've heard done by Ray Charles but I think was also sung by Johnny Cash, Louis Armstrong, and others).

jaymc, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 16:30 (eighteen years ago)

woah that new song is beautiful

chaki, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 17:27 (eighteen years ago)

What do you guys like about that song? I found it painful to listen to. Brian's voice sounds really bad, the tune is nothing special, and neither are the lyrics. It was hard to make it to the end.

St3ve Go1db3rg, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 17:47 (eighteen years ago)

i like the way it sounds

chaki, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 18:31 (eighteen years ago)

those "S" words are killing him...

Nice sound. one listen, I shouldn't decide yet.

Thanks for pointing this out! :-)
