On VH1 right now, SPIN's Sarah "Ultragrrrl" Lewitinn just called Eminem's "Lose Yourself" one of "the greatest pop songs....EVER!"

Pardon me, but I have to blow up the world now.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 19 March 2004 06:52 (twenty-one years ago)

"now"

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 19 March 2004 07:00 (twenty-one years ago)

If she would have said "Without Me", I would have been with her 100%. "Lose Yourself" is some weak-ass Survivor shit tho.

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 19 March 2004 07:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, it IS his best single, so I'll assume that Sarah got far too carried away, slap her on the wrist, and leave it at that.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Friday, 19 March 2004 07:43 (twenty-one years ago)

"without me" is the much better track

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 19 March 2004 07:46 (twenty-one years ago)

eminem is a bad rapper. when are people gonna clean the shit out of their ears and understand that?

Dude (The Yellow Dart), Friday, 19 March 2004 08:20 (twenty-one years ago)

it's true

oops (Oops), Friday, 19 March 2004 08:24 (twenty-one years ago)

What television show was this on?

christhamrin (christhamrin), Friday, 19 March 2004 09:38 (twenty-one years ago)

i wonder if she regretted this in the morning

!!!! (amateurist), Friday, 19 March 2004 10:04 (twenty-one years ago)

without me is good, he isn't a terrible rapper, just not a terribly good one. Loose yourselfis just a bit of poorly produced self obsessed crap, he is the dido of rap.

lukey (Lukey G), Friday, 19 March 2004 10:31 (twenty-one years ago)

get it? get it?

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 19 March 2004 10:31 (twenty-one years ago)

i dunno i think vh1 pays journalists by the hyberbole

"really motley crue were the summit of western civilization"

"bravo, here's your check"

!!!! (amateurist), Friday, 19 March 2004 12:54 (twenty-one years ago)

although i think in his mind alex in nyc has blown up the world (or at least the mtv offices) over more times than our nuclear arsenal is even capable of

!!!! (amateurist), Friday, 19 March 2004 12:56 (twenty-one years ago)

why is Eminem a bad rapper?

stevem (blueski), Friday, 19 March 2004 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

i dunno i think vh1 pays journalists by the hyberbole

a) what you mean, "pays"??

b) what you mean, "journalists"??

fact checking cuz (fcc), Friday, 19 March 2004 13:08 (twenty-one years ago)

huh? you don't think people get paid to appear on vh1?

!!!! (amateurist), Friday, 19 March 2004 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

um, its just like her opinion maaaan.... anyway... eminem's success has been revolutionary whether or not you like his rapping or his songs. lose yourself is great pop even if its not great hip hop... which is what i think sarah was saying...

oli, Friday, 19 March 2004 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

"Lose Yourself" is the Eminem track most likely to be enjoyed by 'rock' fans. Even my brother likes it and he professes to only liking "3-minute power punk pop" (he's 33). My mate Ben does a mean "Without Me" at karaoke.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Friday, 19 March 2004 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

eminem is/was a great rapper you're all on crack

pete b. (pete b.), Friday, 19 March 2004 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

So this argument is essentially that "Lose Yourself" is Eminem's "Hey Ya," with expected results.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 19 March 2004 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

by the way, saying something is "the greatest pop song ever" is not really a incisive bit of criticism whatever you think of the song

!!!! (amateurist), Friday, 19 March 2004 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Silly her. Doesnt she know the only good pop songs were writen by the Beatles?

David Allen (David Allen), Friday, 19 March 2004 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, it was Weird Al'ed, so there you go.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 19 March 2004 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd love to see Alex's / whomever's reaction after viewing VH1's Top 100 Rock Bands / Metal Bands / Hottest Fuxors of All Fookin' Time, just to see if s/he'd be able to succintly express enduring a brain aneurysm in ASCII.

And, duh, greatest pop song of all time EVER = "Chains of Love".

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 19 March 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

my favorite vh1 hyperbolic moment was toure on "where the streets have no name"

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 19 March 2004 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Neither "Without Me" or "Lose Yourself" are anywhere near being Eminem's best songs. I don't think any of his best songs could be played on the radio without substantial amounts of bleeping.

o. nate (onate), Friday, 19 March 2004 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Why is Eminem singled out as 'rap for rock fans'? Plenty rap acts have done guitar-led tracks (PE, Jay Z). It's just that most of them are less good than 'Without Me' (though obv it'd be terrible if Em moved to doing *only* rock-rap tracks, this was just one single).

Strachey, Friday, 19 March 2004 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

It's because he's white.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 19 March 2004 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree that the whole point of those VH1 programs is to be hyperbolic - the show is called Best Week Ever, right? Sarah is being paid to be cute and make overstatements! Not a bad gig.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Friday, 19 March 2004 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

what's funny is sarah went to spin after losing her job at vh1...

(i'm gonna be on one of those vh1 shows next month. be prepared to mock me)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 19 March 2004 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

"Lose Yourself" is some weak-ass Survivor shit tho.

Broheems finally explains to me why I love Lose Yourself so much!

(without me is better though...as are many eminem tracks)

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 19 March 2004 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I wish I were paid to be cute and make hyperbolic statements. Or at least paid enough to have cable. :(

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 19 March 2004 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, Lose Yourself is the first Eminem song my girlfriend liked. She said it sounded a lot angrier than Without Me or the other ones she'd heard.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 19 March 2004 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

(i'm gonna be on one of those vh1 shows next month. be prepared to mock me)

Yanc3y, what are you going to hyperbolize over on VH1? Please tell me it's a part of their new "The A-Frames: Best Band Evah!" half-hour special!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 19 March 2004 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, Yancey, what do you get to talk about?

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 19 March 2004 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

it was the 50 worst songs of all time. believe it or not, i was a last-minute replacement after eddie murphy's brother cancelled (i didn't find this out until afterward). i pretty much defended every song, though i said some ridiculously hyperbolic/apocolyptic things about "we built this city."

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 19 March 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Cool. Are you as cute as Jancee Dunn?

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 19 March 2004 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

(shit, i wasn't gonna let ILM know about my crush on Jancee Dunn. Now the cat's out of the bag.)

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 19 March 2004 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Time to turn in your badge.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 19 March 2004 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Eddie Murphy's brother is really funny on Chappelle's Show!

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Friday, 19 March 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you going to be as funny as Michael Ian Black?

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 19 March 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Yancy, do you know how many of those supposed "50 Worst Songs" VH1 was all over when they came out?

They did a show a while back on bad videos. In 10 minutes of watching, I counted three that they'd played regularly and had been in their top 20.

Hooray for having an aesthetic judgment of any kind!

Rick Massimo (Rick Massimo), Friday, 19 March 2004 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

"my favorite vh1 hyperbolic moment was toure on "where the streets have no name""

haha what did he say??

!!!! (amateurist), Friday, 19 March 2004 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

He said, "Cocaine is one helluva drug."

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 19 March 2004 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't get it

are you implying that you'd have to be on cocaine to like that song?

if so, i would disagree

however i would not apply hyperbole to the song either, it exists as its own hyperbole

!!!! (amateurist), Friday, 19 March 2004 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Eddie Murphy's brother >>> Eddie Murphy

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Friday, 19 March 2004 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I have my own issues w/ Eminem's music but in what universe is he a "bad rapper"?!

Also Lose Yourself is great, Without Me slightly better. Neither of them bad.

djdee2005, Friday, 19 March 2004 18:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Charlie Murphy totally owns Eddie Murphy. Yanc3y, you must please be at least half as funny as him. For my own sake. I watch too much VH1 for my own good.

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Friday, 19 March 2004 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Why is anyone listening to what VH1 has to say? I mean, I ignore bums when I pass them on the street.

dean! (deangulberry), Friday, 19 March 2004 19:02 (twenty-one years ago)

that's sort of rude

amateur!st (amateurist), Friday, 19 March 2004 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I smell a "Yanc3y Str!ck1er True New New York Story" featuring Karen O and James Murphy!

"I'm DFA, bitch!"

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 19 March 2004 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

It's totally rude. But not as rude as expecting money for being lazy! (xpost)

dean! (deangulberry), Friday, 19 March 2004 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

haha amateurist he just said something like "and then it builds...and it builds...and it builds...and then" cut to moment in video right before singing starts then quickly back to toure "I WANNA RUN...what a GREAT way to open a song".

there's something very "water finds its level" about the whole vh1 talking head phenomenon

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 19 March 2004 21:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Ultragrrrl on VH-1 very often as a music expert? If so, weird. She doesn't even write record reviews in Spin, does she? I thought she was just supposed to be a gossip columnist or something!

alpha motherfucker, Friday, 19 March 2004 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

i have no idea what "ultragrrrl" is, but i think whatever it is it makes me glad i no longer read music related publications.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 19 March 2004 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

i have to admit to liking the i wanna run part of the song, and the whole build. cheesy but effective.

as for vh1, it really does reduce your brain to mush... not unpleasantly, but mush just the same. when they get these intelligent people to sit there and talk like you'd talk about a song after a few too many beers, when you're not really saying anything notably interesting anyway... it produces that homer simpson reaction where you're like "yeah, it's funny cos it's TRUE" and then you turn into a puddle of barely sentient slime.

amateur!st (amateurist), Friday, 19 March 2004 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

this is why i only watch vh1 WHILE drunk

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 19 March 2004 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

cheesy but effective

U2 summed up in 3 word! (god I love that song)

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 19 March 2004 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

uh... 3 words

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 19 March 2004 22:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I find Sarah "Ultragrrrl" Lewitinn attractive.

Also, Paul F. Tomkins is on that show, and he is very, very funny.

I think those VH1 shows are the television equivalent of a random "People" or "Us" magazine that one might peruse on the toilet -- they provide small bite-sized chunks of useless information that pass the time and are pretty to look at for a moment when you don't want to get into anything genuinely involving. I think they serve a very valuable purpose -- mild entertainment for when I'm doing the dishes or waiting for a friend to honk and pick me up.

I am looking into having a small flat screen monitor installed directly across from my toilet that would run "The Best Week Ever" on a loop. Then everything would be perfect.

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Friday, 19 March 2004 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Thursday, 25 March 2004 09:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Jess, what do you think about the music industry today, and the phenomenal talents that are in the best studios.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Thursday, 25 March 2004 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

people like ultragrrrl kill me. they work for mainstream music companies that fuel the horrible music industry, and then claim to be underground and "hip." ultragrrrl (and what a cheesy self-proclaimed title) probably knows as much about music as the marketing guy sitting next to her cubicle. they were probably those people in high school that scribbled on their desk, crying inside because no one liked them, saying to themselves "they will see one day." haha. and ive seen ultragrrrl DJ and it is just the most sorry thing....being a DJ is not about picking out songs (see: Wedding DJ), it is about mixing beats and having the talent to combine music in a unique way. sarah does not do that.

ALSO, while i am on my immature rant (which only comes out when things so badly annoy me: people like ultragrrrl)......

if anyone thinks sarah looks cute on tv, hope that you don't see her in real life. in person she is short and fat and has chunky troll legs. she tries to dress "hip" but is really wearing H & M t-shirts that every 18 year old across the country wears when they discover black eyeliner and fishnets. seriously.

sarah is an uneducated fool that has been a dork her whole liife and is trying to make up for it now by selling out to the corporate music world. you are so cool.

didn't even go to college.....

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 29 March 2004 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Also: since when does being short and fat and owning a pair of "chunky troll legs" have any bearing on the quality of one's ideas?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 29 March 2004 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Monday, 29 March 2004 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, he probably applied for Ultragrrrl's job and is pissed that she was hired instead. Her column is not something worth getting angry about. She's doing something most of us would kill to do.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 29 March 2004 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

"Mixing Beats" my ass! Wedding DJs are BETTER than lots of real DJs!!

-- chuck (cedd...), March 29th, 2004.

This bit of righteous wisdom deserves to be repeated before it's forgotten. Carry on with the discussion of chunky troll legs.

chris herrington (chris herrington), Monday, 29 March 2004 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

(Oh, and I too find "Ultragrrl" insufferable, but it has nothing to do with her alledged "chunky troll legs" or lack of a college diploma)

chris herrington (chris herrington), Monday, 29 March 2004 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think most of us would kill to write a column in which we regularly imply that we are making out with the cutest boys in the most boring bands! I'd like to write a column called "making out with dan selzer" and it'll be written from the point of view of when I first saw the video to Pat Benatar's You Better Run on MTV.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 29 March 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, maybe "kill" is a strong word. But getting payed to hang out with rock stars (even boring ones) and write a silly inconsequential column that probably doesn't require much work is better than most dayjobs, I'd say.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 29 March 2004 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

the point is that ultragrrrl claims to be "cool," yet lives in a world that is ruining society. SPIN? VH1? she might as well be the host of TRL. what about publications that honor real musicians. not the latest east village gang of guys in black jeans. she meshes music with looks and cute guys and parties, etc. music is music. a band like phantom planet is not worthy of it. im sorry. its really sad.

and yes, ultragrrrl is ugly, but i think its funny how she takes so many "cute" pictures of her face only and posts them. too much!

her self-gloating really gets to me. stop talking about yourself and do something good for others.

jd, Monday, 29 March 2004 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

You are Melissa Marchant's younger brother and I claim my ten dollars.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 29 March 2004 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

i agree, ultragrrrl DOES look like a chunky troll!

she brags too much. i don't want her job...people that work at SPIN suck! too many shoe-grazers.

and all these people with their blogs....its like high school all over again. why don't you make friends in the real world, instead of from your computer.

this is how people get fat!

who thinks she is hot? yikes.

girl, Monday, 29 March 2004 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

haha dude stop posting under "new" names thinking we won't catch you out

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 29 March 2004 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I like Snow Patrol and now you might see why by checking out their juke box here. they're not as good as Muse,

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 29 March 2004 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I continue to endorse Sarah Lewitinn and continue to find her aesthetically appealing. That said, I do think Spin should offer equal page space to the aforementioned "Making Out with Dan Selzer" column.

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Monday, 29 March 2004 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

you think they'd be open to a "strongo want sex" pitch?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 29 March 2004 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude, just interview people Harvey Fierstein-style. Jess just wants to be loved, is that so WRONG?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 29 March 2004 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

haha! I hadn't thought about that one in years, Anthony!

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 29 March 2004 22:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't know if anybody would get 15-year-old Jon Lovitz material.

i got it.

yeah, that's the ticket!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 29 March 2004 23:09 (twenty-one years ago)

This thread is very creepy, especially the attacks on this girl's appearance. Fuck off, pal. Post some pictures of yourself, let's see how hot you are.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Monday, 29 March 2004 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

"[C]hunky troll legs" is going to be my new screen name somewhere.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 29 March 2004 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

those pictures aren't loading for me, but I'll have to say that I've seen her in person a few times and in photos and on friendster or makeoutclub or god knows what other internet societies filled with girls pictures that I stare at all the time but mostly when I'm not dating someone and for what it's worth, like Ben, I do find her aesthetically appealing, that is, I agree with Ben, not that I find her as aesthetically appealing as Ben, that wouldn't be fair to Sarah, or to Ben, I don't know what I'm saying, they are both aesthetically appealing people, but I've hung out with Ben so I suppose I'm more attracted to him for his personality, whereas Sarah was just some girl I'd see at shows and parties and in picture on the internet who'd always wear like, army jackets like the pot-smoking jewish girls in my high school and upon learning more about her taste in music, will have to say, at the least, we wouldn't have so much to talk about...actually, we'd probably have a TON to talk about, gossip-wise, as I've been around the NYC scene for a bit and while we've never met, know quite a few people in common, but say, wouldn't be able to agree on what to listen to in a car or something. As far as what she looks like from the neck down, I have no comment as I think all of this is talk is totally inappropriate, although, of course, that hasn't stopped Tricia Romano from writing about Sarah's physical attributes either.

I'm just saying if someone started a thread about how bad a writer I am or how my taste in music sucks, it wouldn't spend as much time focusing on the fact that I'm no Neil Diamond, looks-wise(though one could dream...)

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 29 March 2004 23:29 (twenty-one years ago)

sarah is one of my best friends. she is one the kindest people any of you could ever hope to meet. she is intelligent and hilarious and generous and loyal and ethical and beautiful and inventive, passionate and sooo incredibly sincere. she loves music..and she loves people...and doesn't deserve to have her name dragged the mud like this. i understand that this comes with the territory when you're in the public eye..to whatever extent she is...but where this hatred comes from..is truly beyond me. everyone needs to calm down.

D Pyser, Tuesday, 30 March 2004 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

...dragged THROUGH the mud, even.

D Pyser, Tuesday, 30 March 2004 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Tell her to reign in the hyperbole and everyone'll be fine.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah put that bitch in her place!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe the hatred should be directed at Spin, for wasting space on Ultragrrrl's useless column? Just a thought. I don't read the thing myself, so it's hard to get my dander up. More power to her, really. But those groupie-wannabe band-smooching front pages of Spin are totally embarrassing; don't they realize that? What makes them think people give a shit what their writers look like, or who they've been hanging out with? Certainly not their circulation figures, which have apparently been plummeting, right? It's like they've deluded themselves into believing they're celebrities or something. Sad.

alpha motherfucker, Tuesday, 30 March 2004 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah put that magazine in its place!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

There hasn't been nearly as many images of Ultagrrl in the past year or so of SPIN as there have been of Sia Michel. So maybe it's something to do with her influence, given that she's the editor in chief?

Still waiting for them to print images of Chuck Klosterman hanging out with celebs. Maybe next issue?

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Sia Michel is pathetiic.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 23:05 (twenty-one years ago)

pathetique!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 23:05 (twenty-one years ago)

latebloomer (latebloomer), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 23:07 (twenty-one years ago)

except for those chunky troll legs! What do they put in the water over there?

(vomits, passes out)

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 23:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Personally, I'll take the iconization of writers in Spin over the forced anonynmity found in other mags. But I'm biased.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 23:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I have very low standards. I've slept with fire hydrants before.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Inanimate objects turn me on.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

But seriously, from the pictures in Spin, Sia Michel looks fairly attractive to me. Of course that says nothing about her skills as a magazine editor, though.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 23:34 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, I'm done with that. Back to the Spin bashing!

latebloomer (latebloomer), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 23:37 (twenty-one years ago)

FUCK YOU ALL!

ChunkTrollLegs (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 23:40 (twenty-one years ago)

why are people still talking about this?

Dude (The Yellow Dart), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

where did sia michael come from anyway? she seems like another fake dj/groupie type....where did she hone her "editor in chief" skills?

bunch of hype.

yeah, you are right, who the hell cares what the writers look like? they aren't the cool ones...no one cares about them!

randy432, Wednesday, 31 March 2004 05:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Unless they're hot.

Vitamin Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 05:40 (twenty-one years ago)

It's true to a point, but I think the iconization of writers should come from their ideas and their words, not how many photos of themselves they plaster all over the magazine with celebs.

Personally, I'll take the iconization of writers in Spin over the forced anonynmity found in other mags. But I'm biased.

jesus christ this bored is fucking sexist.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 1 April 2004 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm probably opening up a can of worms here, but why does all discussion of female writers on ILM focus on looks and youth, instead of their ideas or their writing abilities? I mean, if you want to talk ugly and troll-like, take a look at their male counterparts. Except for Joe Levy (who in my opinion walks the line between creepy and cute), Rob Tannenbaum, and the occassionally hyperbolic Toure, the male rock critics on VH-1 are a procession of double chins, receding hairlines, "fatness," and acne scars. Am I being cruel to the average and below-average Joe rock critics? That's my point. Would Ultragrrl's VH-1 hyperbole be any better if she looked like a supermodel? I don't know Sarah/Ultragrrrl at all, but I think it's sad that Spin merely exploits her instead of challenging her to be a better writer, which is pretty much the editor-writer relationship at most "lifestyle" mags these days. Marc Spitz wrote a beautiful book about nostalgia and rock fandom and Spin has him covering Ryan Adams'latest spaz attack and the stupid-ass Vines. Over at Rolling Stone, someone of the caliber of Rob Sheffield is a glorified caption writer and interviewing fucking Incubus. They're damn funny captions, and the Incubus feature made me care about them for a half a second, but it's like ordering filet mignon, taking three bites and sending it back. Don't hate the player, hate the game.

Sara Sherr, Friday, 2 April 2004 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't think anyone looks for great rock writing in the glossies. great reporting maybe. (Ex:Joy Williams on Wendy O.Williams in Spin. The usual great non-music stuff in R.S.) Which I guess is a shame, but it's been like that for so long. Most people writing for them are just trying to make a living. Which is why so many people have blogs i suppose.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 2 April 2004 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

i mean they pay pretty good and it's a job. i guess you could say that people are wasting their talents there, but it's just like any other job where that would be true. i just wish i was better at it. better at writing that snappy by-the-numbers ad copy type review stuff. and i wish i was really fast at it too. money is cool. but it's kinda hard for me. maybe i should take a writing class.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 2 April 2004 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

(Ex:Joy Williams on Wendy O.Williams in Spin.)

That article was so excellent, it was painful. I have it carefully preserved in a folder.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Friday, 2 April 2004 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Sara, is that your e-mail now? I want to ask you something. I looked at that plainparade site and it made me miss philly. say hi to Jack Rose for me. You know, my brother dan bunny had jack play a michael hurley show that he put together and he paid jack in old paintings of mine! jack got ripped-off.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 2 April 2004 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

it is weird to see christgau in R.S. and other mags, he could be anybody. chuck, somehow, even when he was writing for Entertainment Weekly still managed to be chuck. i don't know how he did it.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 2 April 2004 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Jeanne, Joy Williams is one of my godz. she is staggering.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 2 April 2004 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Scott observed that people don't expect good writing in glossy magazines. But in this last thread about SPIN, people actually pointed to a time in the not-so-distant past when they did:

Is SPIN really circling the drain?

Why can't the non-music stuff be as risky and interesting as the music writing? When did style take over life?

Sara Sherr, Friday, 2 April 2004 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I think a lot of it has to do with mags slaving themselves to the release schedule. Features are assigned based on new records coming out, and labels know this, restricting the amount of time given to a feature to be a few days max, ensuring the feature's status as artist-puff-piece-bullhorn. Is there even such a thing as investigative reporting in music journalism these days? A few years ago I managed to talk an up-and-coming band into letting me be with them in the studio while they were recording their debut album. I pitched the idea to everybody, and no one so much as nibbled (not that I was anybody at the time (or that I'm anyone now)).

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 2 April 2004 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

what you end up with is stuff that isn't especially good ad-copy OR good rockwrite. that's the frustrating thing to me. as someone who enjoys good examples of both.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 2 April 2004 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Yancey, Sara and Scott are all very OTM.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Friday, 2 April 2004 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Between working at a record store with a happening magazine section and a boyfriend who subscribes to a zillion mags (because he finds the cheap subscriptions), I almost never pay for mags, unless it's Bust, Bitch, Venus, Heeb, Kittymagik, Mojo, and a few others that I can't think of right now.

Don't some girls like love handles? These are the same girls who say I am 'comfy' or analogus to a 'teddy bear'.

amateur!st (amateurist), Saturday, 3 April 2004 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I had an epiphany today, as a 34-year-old short, chunky troll-legged, never left Philadelphia, Tower Records-working, broke-ass promoter, failed rock critic, that Ultragrrrl is living her 20s right. If I had to do it all over again, I'd take a page out of her book, even if it's not always the most interesting thing to read on the planet. Seriously, ten years of angst-ridden, hang-wringing, existential, misery-goat bullshit and not a damn thing to show for it. Even with all the ridicule and criticism lobbed her way (admittedly by me, in my own private hell), I'd trade with her in a heartbeat. No worries, no muss, no fuss. Am I crazy? Nah, just damn cynical.

Sara Sherr, Wednesday, 7 April 2004 03:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Sara Sherr, Wednesday, 7 April 2004 03:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Both are good. Follow your heart!

(...because it doesn't matter what you call it, some jackasses on ILM will inevitably start a thread about 'the blog by that girl with the Chunky Troll Legs')

I like the bees one!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 05:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I regret that this thread devolved into a critique of Mz.Lewitinn's physical attributes, as that was never the intent. That is not to say, however, that she is absolved off her crimes. I put myself through the grave misfortune of watching MTV2's "Most Essential Grunge Albums" show or whatever it was (look, I have a newborn.... newborn's like to be up and screaming when everyone else is peacefully asleep....thus, while vainly trying to settle and calm my daughter, I end up watching a lot of crap television...which is a weak defense, I know.) In any event, there was Ultragrrl again, waxing rhapsodic about how she and her mother first bonded over heard Nirvana Live in New York and what a seizmic event for her that was, which made me want to scream and spit up right along with my child.

That Sarah Lewitinn has "chunky troll legs" or not is not my concern.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 12:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Agreed, but remember she's really freakin young. She was a teenage for Nirvana Live in NY and isn't everything seismic when you're a teenager? And also, with those shows, they probably poke you with a cowprod until you say something soundbyte-worthy, and hyperbole always does the trick. (I think that last point was probably covered upthread).

But yeah, I feel your pain and often feel like spitting up like a newborn on a daily basis. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!!!

Sara Sherr, Wednesday, 7 April 2004 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

ummmm, i still think that ultragrrrl sucks...whether she has chunky troll legs or not.

ive actually met/seen her and she is like watching a train wreck. all fake hyped up, just like she is on TV.

seems to me that the girl needs to get laid.

jordie, Wednesday, 7 April 2004 12:57 (twenty-one years ago)

i never thought i'd be turned off by cynicism but here we are

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 12:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe the reason I get so uppity about this stuff is that because the music that seemed so seismic to me when I was a hyperbole-spewin' teenager never got the proper credit it still to this day deserves. I used to get harassed for liking stuff like the Circle Jerks and Dead Kennedys and such when I was her age. Where's my VH1 special, dammit!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

alex, if you had a special i would tivo that shit for real. and i don't even have tivo.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

oh alex i wasnt even talking about you. i dont think you're cynical at all! if anything you feel too much, too deeply.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

but jordie...the name of her column is "making out with ultragrrl", I don't think that is her problem. Her problem is that she probably hasn't spent enough time listening to Health and Efficiency by This Heat.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah that must be it

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

haha when i was 13 and getting into sonic youth everyone in my junior high school thought i was a satanist.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha. I don't tell my friends I like Killing Joke because I'm afraid they'll think I'm a satanist. Maybe if I went to public school I wouldn't have as much of a problem telling people.

Aja (aja), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

oh alex i wasnt even talking about you. i dont think you're cynical at all! if anything you feel too much, too deeply.

Err..Jess, I was responding to Jordie's post, not yours. I wear my cynicism like a shiny, spikey badge that is razor sharp to the touch.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

There's nothing inherently wrong with actually being a Satanist, by the way.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

You're just saying that because of Jaz. He was a satanist, wasn't he?

Aja (aja), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

actually the two girls who bullied me in eighth grade were goth sisters who listened to bauhaus.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

No, I'm saying it because it's a perfectly valid opinion. Jaz, meanwhile, has dabbled in all stripes of religion and philosophy.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a friend who kind of wants to be goth. I don't think she can do it. She's way too nice and she would not look good with jet black hair. She surprised me when she came to school wearing "free dress" for her birthday with a Motley Crue shirt on.

No, I'm saying it because it's a perfectly valid opinion. Jaz, meanwhile, has dabbled in all stripes of religion and philosophy.

Oh, geezz. Reminds me of something my mom's friend said. I can't quite remember what the religion she said he practices now.

In any case, Jaz is a mad man, ok. But, that only helps the music.

I have a friend who kind of wants to be goth. I don't think she can do it. She's way too nice and she would not look good with jet black hair. She surprised me when she came to school wearing "free dress" for her birthday with a Motley Crue shirt on.

Tell your little friend that wearing a Motley Crue t-shirt makes her about as credibly Goth as a Nascar fanatic.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

haha when i was 13 and getting into sonic youth everyone in my junior high school thought i was a satanist.

Ah, Satan is boring.

Tell your little friend that wearing a Motley Crue t-shirt makes her about as credibly Goth as a Nascar fanatic.

And what should I tell her about likeing Evanecence (or how ever ya spell it)?

Aja (aja), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

"There's nothing inherently wrong with actually being a Satanist, by the way."

Maybe so, but there are millions of Christians waiting to persecute and possibly attack (physically and verbally) said Satanists.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Not that I'm anti-Satan. I'm down with the Prince of Darkness. I'm just saying it's risky being a Satanist.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

That's the reason why I don't want to thought as a Satanist. I go to Catholic school. My principal is a sister!

It was not always this way.

Honour the fire man!! (who the hell came up with that?)

Bring all the Killing Joke albums you currently possess back to the stores you purchased them at once. You are not worthy to own them.

The Boredoms fanboys vs. Killing Joke fanboys FITE

Lil' Fancy Kpants (ex machina), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Bring all the Killing Joke albums you currently possess back to the stores you purchased them at once. You are not worthy to own them.

I can own what I want. You have no right (no matter how big of a Killing Joke fan you are) to say that I must return them.

I say, if you love the music, you are worthy to own it.

Everyone I know who played D&D as a kid are now addicted to crystal meth or oxycontin. Someone please explain.

Oh, and I don't care if Ultragrrl is fat either, but her "Making Out With..." schtick seems custom designed to get under the skin of hipsters/other rock critics who are insecure about being perceived as a bunch of celebrity hangers-on. Passing herself off as a writer who's about one degree away from being a full-on groupie is entertainingly provocative, though a bit pathetic as well.

Dave M. (rotten03), Thursday, 8 April 2004 01:48 (twenty-one years ago)

>Everyone I know who played D&D as a kid are now addicted to
>crystal meth or oxycontin. Someone please explain.

Seriously, Dave? I live in a small town where the use of those
drugs is pandemic, and I used to play D&D regularly, as
recently as 2 years ago (I still technically theoretically
play although I never do (they came out with a new ruleset, grr
there's too many damn rules)), and I've never even been tempted
to use any serious drugs. In fact, my occasional pot use makes
me an outcast-among-outcasts, since most of them have never tried
it or even drink regularly.

All in all, a pretty well-balanced group, a few of them even
went/are going to college, although most of them are addicted
to porn and live at home until the age of 25. Not a brochure
lifestyle, but it beats getting hooked on meth or oxykinds.

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Thursday, 8 April 2004 02:01 (twenty-one years ago)

is 250 words (if that) tucked into a corner of one page of a magazine per month really a "schtick"? and how does it seem "calculated"? like, do you honestly think people sat down and plotted, "ooh, let's get under all these other writers' skin"? sorry, but that seems reeeeally far-fetched to me.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Thursday, 8 April 2004 02:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think it's that complicated Dave. I think Sarah likes a lot of boring, contemporary bands filled with cute boys, I think she does hang out with them and I wouldn't be suprised if she makes out with some of them, though I think now she's dating some guy I kinda know. All of that is fine and good, it's just a long way from Byron Coley's column that used to run in Spin.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 8 April 2004 03:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't have anything against her.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 8 April 2004 03:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Squirl: I only know two D&D players. Skewed sample size.

Matos & Dan: Dan OTM, except she likes Franz Ferdinand and they're not totally boring. Anyways, all I meant was that her NYC Rock Socialite persona is the sort of thing that the Amy Phillips Internet Haterz Brigade would love to jump all over, not that Ultragrrl deliberately set out to attract this sort of attention.

Also I'm basing my assessment of her 'schtick' less on her MOWUG columns, which I've only read two of, and more on her blog when I read it two months ago. It's only a blog, I know, but the MOWUG I read had a similar voice. On the other hand, the idea of Spin publishing someone who writes like a really enthusiastic fan meeting her favorite bands (while still being fairly articulate, which UG definitely is) could be interesting and provocative. I'd like to read a full-length piece before passing judgement.

Dave M. (rotten03), Thursday, 8 April 2004 06:50 (twenty-one years ago)

what spin SHOULD publish is enthusiastic articles about when people like ME meeting my favorite bands. That way they could explore my eagerness and fanaticism, but also turn their readers onto say, the Homosexuals or Metal Urbain or Fast Product! I'm being silly here, of course...In a certain world, some of the bands she writes about aren't getting much press, that is relative to say, Justin and Janet, but I'm just sacrificing Sarah as a means to discuss what could be covered in any given magazine, and I do remember going through my older sister's issues of Spin and reading Byron's column.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 8 April 2004 06:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Dave M: I don't think she's *written* any full-length features! (and if she has, I've missed them; c'est la vie.) so it's hard to judge her by that criteria. my hunch--and this is just a hunch--is that she'd probably write more interesting stuff if she had 1000 words to profile a band than she does as the quarter-page columnist with a prescribed schtick. (I have nothing against schticks, needless to say, but in this case it's not one I find particularly interesting.) then again, I think this about everybody.

one year passes...
Just found a copy of her book on the discard pile here at work.

Her acknowledgments go on for four pages.

Plus, she called "Love Like Blood" by Killing Joke "goth".

Thus, I must now blow up the world.

I should point out that I work in the same building as her, and she wears these GOD AWFUL solid wood flip-flops that you can hear coming 15 feet down the hall.
