Felix Da Housecat - Devin Dazzle and the Neon Fever

It's been leaked, but only as one long track. I'm splitting it up as we speak, but I don't have the track list. Anyone got the it?

It's definately Felix's best. I was a little worried when I heard Cyberwhore, but the album is great. Great melodic hooks. As one would expect, very sexy and very 80's. James Murphy tears it up!

Watching Cars Go By = Cyberwhore

JoB (JoB), Friday, 26 March 2004 01:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I will buy it! I don't think I have every track...

Matt Boch (Matt Boch), Friday, 26 March 2004 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)

uhh are you on soulseek mister?

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 26 March 2004 01:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Matt Boch (Matt Boch), Friday, 26 March 2004 01:34 (twenty-two years ago)

woohoo!

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 26 March 2004 01:35 (twenty-two years ago)

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 26 March 2004 01:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Scratch that, it's fully leaked, all 15 tracks.

hmm, i'm seeing you as offline from my end

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 26 March 2004 01:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Matt Boch (Matt Boch), Friday, 26 March 2004 01:39 (twenty-two years ago)

gotcha!

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 26 March 2004 01:43 (twenty-two years ago)

OH MY GOD !!!!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 26 March 2004 01:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I just stepped on a CDR spindle.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 26 March 2004 01:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Split up into individual tracks now.

This makes my bad week much much better.

Matt Boch (Matt Boch), Friday, 26 March 2004 01:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I like it. sounds very much like a parade of '80s styles, smart sonics, haven't gotten too deep into it lyrically but somehow doubt I'm missing too much there.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Friday, 26 March 2004 02:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Not paying attention to the lyrics is a sin! It's a concept album. -smirk-

"With all that said, one inevitable question remains, where did the name "Devin Dazzle and the Neon Fever” come from? Felix being Felix, has an answer for everything: “Devin Dazzle is a character fascinated by the nightlife," he says "Every time he sees neon lights he gets the fever. But Dazzle has a friend named Neon Fever who’s a bad influence on him and is everything opposite of Devin.” So, might this be an autobiographical album? “It’s something personal” he says, “and I’m not gonna tell.” "

Matt Boch (Matt Boch), Friday, 26 March 2004 02:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Ronan was there when he thought of it!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 26 March 2004 02:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Can Ronan explain the concept at all? Is the neon fever a fever, or a character. If it's a character, why is it not human?

Matt Boch (Matt Boch), Friday, 26 March 2004 09:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Neon Fever is the name of the much touted felix 'girl band'. I think the LP is a bit dodgy myself.

Debord (Debord), Friday, 26 March 2004 10:35 (twenty-two years ago)

hmm, i am not sure what to think of this yet.

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 26 March 2004 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

He's changed it about ten times, it was going to be the Neon Memoirs, and Neon Adventures and all sorts of shit, then he told us he'd abandoned the Devin Dazzle idea at which point we protested.

That was back when we used to hang out.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 26 March 2004 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I REALLY like it.

It seems more organic and track-based than Thee Glitz. And kind of sad.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 26 March 2004 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

It tries some similar things to Hell's "NY Muscle" but pulls them off where that record kind of failed. But it is undeniably Felix. Why is he so horny and obsessed with Hollywood?

Then again, aren't we all?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 26 March 2004 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

where did you think "ny muscle" failed?? wondering because i rate hell's "munich machine" >> "kittenz and thee glitz", and i actually haven't heard either hell or felix's new material ... well, i heard about 20 minutes of "ny muscle" in a store and thought it sounded quite heavy but that doesn't really count.

vahid (vahid), Friday, 26 March 2004 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I LOVE Munich Machine, maybe as much as Thee Glitz, and I probably listen to it more. I may need to give NY Muscle more time, but on first impressions it's kind of dull and joyless and hipsterish. Devin Dazzle is just pretty damn infectious.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 26 March 2004 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

i dig ny muscle quite a bit, though it did take a few listens to grow on me. and yeah, as i said a few months ago, devin dazzle is really great, even if the hardcore felix fans i know hate it.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 26 March 2004 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it becoming an ILM cliche to say "I'm glad I'm such a dilettante because I lack the knowledge that would otherwise prevent me from enjoying [x]"?

Because if so, I never said it.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 26 March 2004 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Has anyone seen the artwork??

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 26 March 2004 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

heh

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 26 March 2004 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

i have to listen to it again, there was definitely a lot of stuff i liked on first listen. also it was first thing in the morning and i was really out of it and distracted.

ny muscle i couldn't really seem to get into. maybe i should give it another try.

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 26 March 2004 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

listening to this again on a real actual stereo, i'm enjoying it though still not much is sticking out. "let your mind be your bed" is fun cuz i'm a sucker for whatever synth sound dude sprinkles throughout (i'm not sure how to describe it but it kind of reminds me of "happy hour"). "watching cars go by/cyberwhore" i'm liking a lot too.

oh and "what she wants" is the one with dude from dfa right? i like that too but it hasn't completely hooked me yet.

this has been another noncommital post from s1ocki!

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 27 March 2004 01:53 (twenty-two years ago)

whatabout Ready 2 Wear or whatever it's called?

And the one with the posh English lady that goes "Devin you puhrrrrvert!"?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Saturday, 27 March 2004 03:31 (twenty-two years ago)

you're drunk.

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 27 March 2004 04:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I am! I have been drinking in the bath and listening to Lil Flip! How did you know?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Saturday, 27 March 2004 05:02 (twenty-two years ago)

okay, I'm talking to you on slsk as well now. this is weird. whatever.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Saturday, 27 March 2004 05:02 (twenty-two years ago)

please tell me you're drinking champagne straight from the bottle!

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 27 March 2004 05:03 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm loving this so, so much two listens in. ready 2 wear particularly.

toby (tsg20), Saturday, 27 March 2004 13:01 (twenty-two years ago)

yes "ready 2 wear" and "watching cars go by (cyberwhore)" are the ones that particularly stand out.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Saturday, 27 March 2004 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

watching cars go by is quite good.

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 27 March 2004 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

i am liking number 3, it's like a riff on the first half of "yeah"

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 27 March 2004 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

why cant I fecking find it not remotely queued. BAH

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 27 March 2004 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

who are you on slsk?>

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 27 March 2004 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

mr lamouche

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 27 March 2004 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm off out now but I'm sure I'll get it eventually!

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 27 March 2004 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey s1ocki if you're going to ask people if they're on slsk you should consider sharing your files. Particularly hard to find ones like this album. Seems kind of unfair to ask people to put their files out there and then not share any of yours.

"The above statement is based on the notion that your slsk id is the same as your id here. if not, and you are sharing your files, then I apologize."

Andrew Boch, Sunday, 28 March 2004 03:31 (twenty-two years ago)

??????

I personally find s1ocki to be a very generous gentleman of some repute.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 28 March 2004 04:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I would agree, he was nice to me and added me to his list.

My big brother must have searched my name on google or something.

strange...

Matt Boch (Matt Boch), Sunday, 28 March 2004 08:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Turns out he wanted the tracks for himself and was endless qued on slsk.

Matt Boch (Matt Boch), Sunday, 28 March 2004 08:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, this is a work of art from beginning to end. Two questions:

Is it "the Neon Fever" or "the Neon Forever?"

What's the release date?

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 29 March 2004 05:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Scratch the first question. Emperor Norton sez "the Neon Fever" (and I was just curious, because both are coming up on slsk).

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 29 March 2004 05:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, never mind. Scratch the second question too:

UK 24 May
US 30 June

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 29 March 2004 05:35 (twenty-two years ago)

i have it (from nordic, as it happens). i am misterhungry. i put everyone in the ilm room on my list a while back (which is where, btw?) . if you can't get it, msg.

g--ff (gcannon), Monday, 29 March 2004 06:18 (twenty-two years ago)

UK 24 May

...and the rest of Europe.

JoB (JoB), Monday, 29 March 2004 09:59 (twenty-two years ago)

It's the mellower tracks (Ready 2 Wear, Shes So Damn Cool, Devin Dazzle Theme) that seem to be sticking out for me most.

Mil, Monday, 29 March 2004 11:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate to sound fickle (although I am), but the initial excitement is wearing off for me. There are still some vey good tracks, but I prefer Kittenz.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 29 March 2004 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, that's where i'm heading too, opinion-wise, though it is growing on me! this one seems a little less fun to dance to.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 29 March 2004 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't seem to get geoff's file list.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 29 March 2004 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

(I think I am unskilled at the game of Slsk)

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 29 March 2004 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Ronan, u can get it off that nice nordicskilla chap.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 29 March 2004 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

aha! I hear he's something of an urban cowboy.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 29 March 2004 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

?????

Anyway, it's in his "new folder" under "devin dazzle". He'd put you up on his list, but he's not at his slsk right now. He will be much later today.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 29 March 2004 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry I just wanted to say something random. it's been a long and routine day.

His file list seems not to be showing at the moment, for a mr lamouche who is attempting to see it, but said mr will surely see the file list eventually, and is very grateful to nordicskilla.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 29 March 2004 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't remember if I left my slsk running before I left for work, but it's in my 2004 (new) folder if you want to give it a shot. username: third_i

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 29 March 2004 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

James Murphy's presence on this album bothers me somewhat, I've only heard 3 tracks cos I keep getting remotely queued but I really sense that Murphy's vocals could get very annoying very soon.

It's not just that really, I like DFA alot and I like Felix alot, and sometimes I like the Neptunes alot. Why then do I get the feeling that there's this gigantic gloop of DFelixEptunes on the horizon somewhere. I can't help but fear this fucking nasty middlebrow collab thing is going to eat us all for breakfast.

Is the rest of ".....Neon Fever" actual Felix Da Housecat records or a new sound for actually Felix Da Housecat. I want a decent artist album with a bit of identity to it, not what sounds like a comp of other peoples ideas of dance music.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean somewhere down the line aren't dance people thinking "NO GOOD CAN COME OF THIS"

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

murphy's only on that one track, i think.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah I knew that I'd just hate to think Felix had been assimilated by a scene which in reality he hadn't ever been connected to until now.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

the rest of the album isn't so dfa-ish, though there is a bit more of a guitar sound going on there, which i'm not so sure i'm into.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

And I actually like the track with Murphy! (my comment about his vocals is perhaps unfair, is that crooning voice him too? that saves the record. I just mean all the "uh ah ahahaha heh eheheeh" stuff is kind of starting to wear thin. Would Yeah be as good without any vocals? Quite probably.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

want a decent artist album ... not what sounds like a comp of other peoples ideas of dance music

that's EXACTLY what killed the dave clarke album.

instead of "the compass" and "before i was so rudely interrupted..." we get really uninspired dj godfather and dj rush tracks that take the worst elements of both, a mr lif collab. that sounds like el-p, two chicks on speed collabs that sound like adult...

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

The Clarke album sounded, unsurprisingly, like it was made over about 6 years, at various points in time.

The BIG tracks were the collabs and the subtle ones were still good, you could imagine Dei Gratias being really good on a total artist album.

I liked the DC album for like a week and haven't bothered with it since.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

actually i take that back, the dj godfather track was pretty good except it just sort of slapped godfather on top of generic dave clarke instead of coming up with some sort of freaky electro collision like the "logic bomb" mix of "before i was... pt. 2" ... i kind of had the same problem with the godfather / assault / andrea parker track. i mean, they aren't THAT compelling - why would you want to (mis)use them as just guest vocalists?

the dj rush track, though, just ended up like the ultimate stereotype of clarke and rush - one dimensional, banging w/ a hectoring vocal ...

x-post: ronan you LIKED the collabs? i only like "the wolf" and "the wiggle".

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

none of that dave clarke stuff (not that i heard much) really clicked with me.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

No no I meant the tracks getting the hype or attention were all collabs, and that if he'd made an album with Dei Gratias and stuff on it and it was his own artist album, no collabs then things would have been alot better. The smaller tracks would have sounded even better for it.

I dunno, he's a very mixed up guy at the best of times. Like I said on my blog to me Clarke will never be big league as far as production goes. But then even as regards mixes and stuff I like Garnier so so much more. (I compare the two cos they seem to be on the circuit over here so often)

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Murphy's vocals on this remind me of a cross of David Byrne and David Sylvian, which I figured would drive all of ILM wild with delight.

dleone (dleone), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Just call me RONAN PHILISTINE

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Finally.

Ok yeah Ready 2 Wear strikes me as the best so far, either that or Everyone is Someone in LA. But also She's So Damn cool, which sounds like a very American take on Justus Kohncke or maybe even Superpitcher to me.

A few things.

Are all the tracks really going to be so short???? I feel like I'm just digging it when it ends. I guess it's totally NOT a dance album then. Kind of a shame, the jury is still out for me but I've only listened to it once. I mean I'd prefer him exploring less stereotypically electroclash stuff. I'm not so sure this isn't a step backwards.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Give me time, I want to like this!

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Let your inner rockist out, Ronan.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

i have to agree with ronan, this is less of a dance album than i'd hoped and i'm a bit dissapointed by that.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 21:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I liked Felix before now, but I have to say I'm happy this is less of a dance album (me, not being a dancer and all).

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 21:17 (twenty-two years ago)

pssst! Come over here, I'll tell you a secret:

I hate that James Murphy track...

Don't tell ILM!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 21:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Cyberwhore is a dancefloor track!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 21:21 (twenty-two years ago)

but it's also a rock track. *brain explodes!*

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't know how much of a dancefloor track cyberwhore is!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

well, you go dancing MUCH more than me, so fair play.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a pop record, right? People dance to pop, right?

dleone (dleone), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

not in bush's america!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 00:32 (twenty-two years ago)

If Ren McCormick can make a school of repressed kids dance to Kenny Loggins, ILM can dance to Felix da Housecat.

Andy K (Andy K), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 01:03 (twenty-two years ago)

technasia remixes of 'way of life' off that last dave clarke album are really good, everything else was kinda...ehh.

felix da housekatt put on a very poor dj performance at the last coachella. I wanna see him in a proper setting to make a better evaluation.

tylero, Wednesday, 31 March 2004 04:22 (twenty-two years ago)

He was amazing at the Melbourne Big Day Out in January. Flat out amazing.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 05:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm loving the album. I think that part of the riff from "Watching Cars Go By (Cyberwhore)" is from New Order's "Temptation". Also, there's a really weird sound on "Hunting Season" that sounds like it's coming from behind me - it's a very weird effect. Also, "She's So Damn Cool" is very Kompakt.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 06:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Ronan, regarding song length... I'm hoping lots of 12" extended mixes come out. I feel like alot of the songs could use a few more minutes to flesh themselves out as dance tracks. Still, the material is really danceable, it's just structured more like rock. Also, I'm just impressed with the strong melodic vocal lines that are all over the album.

Matt Boch (Matt Boch), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 06:50 (twenty-two years ago)

The "Devin Dazzle Theme" is so sad! Like Prince with no attitude. I love it!!!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 06:53 (twenty-two years ago)

(not that Prince's attitude is bad or anything)

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 06:54 (twenty-two years ago)

"Ready 2 Wear" is crying out for a Roger Sanchez big room mix.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 07:06 (twenty-two years ago)

James Murphy's voice is really fucking irritating. Losing My Edge aside, I'm coming to the conclusion he ruins everything he's on (Yeah would be BETTER without the vocals). I think it's because he sounds like Wimpey from Popeye.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 07:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Are all the vocals on What She Wants him? As I say the crooning voice saves it.

I haven't ripped this to cd yet so perhaps it'll grow on me. I think in some ways it's the idea annoying me, and in hindsight I could say it about the Jaxx aswell, it's brilliant music but it's only ever going to appeal to the likes of us.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 09:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Though just flicking it on this morning "She's So Damn Cool" is pretty jaw dropping.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 09:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Can this really be the full album, tracks like romantique seem to just end as a riff is coming in?

I am enjoying it a bit more today.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 09:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Matt Boch (Matt Boch), Sunday, 4 April 2004 08:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's possible it's not the full album. Before I split it up, it was one long file...

Matt Boch (Matt Boch), Sunday, 4 April 2004 08:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's possible it's not the full album. Before I split it up, it was one long file...

If it's not, the full album is out there. I've got it (and at least 20 people have gotten it from me). Thanks for the cover art. I'm trying not to let it make me like the album less, but...wtf?!

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Sunday, 4 April 2004 13:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm trying not to let it make me vote it ALBUM OF THE YEAR

Please please please let there be a six-minute extended version of "Nina" in the works.

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Sunday, 4 April 2004 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

oh my god, that cover. oh my god.

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 4 April 2004 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I want at least 4 more minutes of She's So Damn Cool

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 5 April 2004 08:37 (twenty-two years ago)

that front cover looks very George Clinton.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 5 April 2004 08:40 (twenty-two years ago)

This album is pretty great - but it can also be a cold, hard display of craft. FdH is like the Squarepusher of electro-pop: he's got mega-talent, but not necessarily the "human" touch. Practically every song on this record is perfect, yet other than a few here and there ("Nina" being one), I'm not sure it's going to get that many people humming along outside his fanbase.

That said, for those of us who happen to like cold, hard craft from time to time (I even like the new Squarepusher), good stuff.

dleone (dleone), Monday, 5 April 2004 11:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I think his records are really emotive, particularly this new record. I'm not sure how you could listen to this album and not find it emotional????

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 5 April 2004 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Craft doesn't preclude emotion, necessarily - but when I hear his music, I hear gears, I hear style, formula, craft - and none of this is a bad thing. In fact, prior to posting at ILM, I had never really read anything to suggest otherwise. I would apply the same argument to Elvis Costello, Andy Partridge, Abba, etc

This album sounds like an exercise in making pop songs to me - specifically tailored pop songs - when someone said upthread that they had wished it was maybe more of a "dance album", it occurred to me that one of the reasons it may not sound like a "dance album" (like say, the Aphrohead record might have), is because it isn't structured, the songs are pieced together just like pop songs always have been, with A's and B's and symmetrical structures and things. Not to mention the fact that every song is in a different style - who does that other than total pop lifers like Partridge (think Dukes), Costello or Stephen Merrit? And please excuse me, but I tend to make a b-line for structure in pop records, especially ones that sound to me like they're explicitly written to demonstrate form and style.

..."because it isn't structured like one" in the second graph there

dleone (dleone), Monday, 5 April 2004 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree, some of the songs end a little too early but I had the same issue with "Madame Hollywood" and "Harlot" (best intro EVER!) from the last album. I think its very deliberate tho, but it's no big deal, just hit "repeat".

complicatedfellow, Saturday, 10 April 2004 06:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Any Harrison Crump on this record? I love his tracks on Kitten and the Glitz.

ben welsh (benwelsh), Sunday, 11 April 2004 04:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Shame on you! ;)

this album is just incredible. its funny, its trendy, its catchy... it's Felix. so many styles and all sooo goood! i luv the one with murphy, its a killer!

Karel Vesely (karl76), Sunday, 18 April 2004 08:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I like Let Your Mind Be Your Bed and Ready To Wear alot !

the slower, pulsating tracks are starting to grow on me. "she's so damn cool" is great, felix's vocals and the effects on his voice fit the song very well- i wish he would sing more! it is definitely kompakt-esque.

the one-two punch of "rocket ride" and "what she wants" is fun. objectively, there's no reason james murphy's vocal isn't annoying as fuck, but it improbably winds up catchy as hell. i think it's due to the more sung parts in the middle. the intro is cool and disorienting and too short compared to the rest, but the great bassline justifies the length somewhat.

the guitar break in "nina" is the melody to neil diamond's "america!"

.rob (rgeary), Monday, 17 May 2004 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I am starting to enjoy this to the point of it becoming my fave of the year. I would kill for an extended mix of "She's So Damn Cool".

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 17 May 2004 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

"everyone is someone" worked awesomely at the final dance party of the school year we had at my house a couple weeks back.

djdee2005, Tuesday, 18 May 2004 06:32 (twenty-one years ago)

house = on campus, not my moms apt. w/ her standing over us w/ milk and cookies. That was my birthday party.

djdee2005, Tuesday, 18 May 2004 06:33 (twenty-one years ago)

@d@m I'm totally nicking your spelling of "Devin you puhrrrrvert" for the teaser to my review of this. Czech's in the post.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Monday, 24 May 2004 07:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, is this the high-concept, vaguelly narrative-based eclecto-dance album of the year that you can actually dance to?

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Monday, 24 May 2004 08:22 (twenty-one years ago)

fucking DIGIPACKs hell hell. I almost cried in HMV when I realised it was a mangley cardboard thing. Fortunately this is the only thing wrong with it (i.e. it sounds like the front cover = it is perfect)

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 24 May 2004 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

i hate that james murphy track too @d@m. the rest of the album is astounding, but i cant stand murphy's whimpering (and i love his vocals with LCD).

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Monday, 24 May 2004 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

thirded, that track is really annoying. the album on the other hand yields new pleasures each time I stick it on. it's an ace driving album.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 24 May 2004 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

When is this actually out?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 24 May 2004 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

great review dleone. almost makes up for the tragedy of that kittenz review.

this album is punching ALL my buttons - "What She Wants" and "Ready to Wear" are both so gorgeous and the whole thing is just so ridiculously effusive, by which I mean "wonderful and, to me, moving"

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

so so much better than the '...glitz' stuff.
listening to 'cyberwhore/cars go by' i had that rare feeling that 'this is one of the best songs i've ever heard'. i still feel that way. and yes it's emotional, so very emotional esp. the last track.

when does he play live? who's seen him? does he bring all the vocalists out or what?

what a record though eh? this year's 'discovery' to be borin about it,
in that it's the more pop, less demonstrably dance-y so all the hardcore dance types moan but the dance-*pop* fans go crackers. like me!

has simon reynolds heard it?!

piscesboy, Monday, 21 June 2004 11:24 (twenty-one years ago)

"Ready to Wear" is really great. I had to play it like three times in a row on Saturday.

jaymc, Monday, 21 June 2004 13:02 (twenty-one years ago)

ready to wear is the best track for reals

i love 'What She Wants' and 'Neon Human' so much. 'Watching Cars Go By' has grown on me partly because I am a sucker for the Art Of Noise 'HEY' and it sounds like he has sampled 808 State's 'Cubik' with that menacing guitar bit

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Sunday, 22 August 2004 00:39 (twenty-one years ago)

the harmony when they say 'Human' and repeat it is SO satisfying

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Sunday, 22 August 2004 00:42 (twenty-one years ago)

This might be my favorite record of the year. I've certainly listened to it more than anything else from this year. "Ready 2 Wear" is the new "Digital Love"!!!

Mike Ouderkirk (Mike Ouderkirk), Sunday, 22 August 2004 02:02 (twenty-one years ago)

i ended up really hating this album

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 22 August 2004 02:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm starting to like this more and more, although I wouldn't call this album of the year.

I was appalled by Felix's lazy, weak-ass remix of Benassi's "Love Is Gonna Save Us" though. That song is pure gold (maybe the best single this year) and he does NOTHING with it.

Siegbran (eofor), Sunday, 22 August 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Only heard 'Rocket Ride', but that's through the televisual magic of MTV. 6/10.

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Sunday, 22 August 2004 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

did anyone else notice how much "Nitelife Funworld" sounds like "Around The World In A Day" by Prince and The Revolution? This is a good thing of course

I've been bumping this album like mad lately.

I feel bad for ignoring it towards the end of the year.

ah man they should've locked electropop when Felix dropped this record

dociah t. azzahole (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 25 September 2010 10:00 (fifteen years ago)

I got on a reignited kick of listening to this album really hard about a year ago. It's probably time again.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 25 September 2010 10:07 (fifteen years ago)

yeah it was bloody great this wasn't it? i don't think he gets his due for the actual records.

piscesx, Saturday, 25 September 2010 13:15 (fifteen years ago)

i withdraw my statement of August 21, 2004, 11:58PM.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 25 September 2010 15:46 (fifteen years ago)

Really wish he was used more as a reference point for current electro-pop. Man, can't believe it's been nearly ten years since Kittenz dropped...like a bomb of joy into my life.

fan of puppetry (Spinspin Sugah), Saturday, 25 September 2010 16:32 (fifteen years ago)

I dunno if it's the goofy cover art or the James Murphy collaboration but this record had really dropped in my estimation in the 12 years since I listened to it last. It's all tied up in a particular summer but I hadn't previously appreciated what a sad record it was.

She's So Damn Cool is still amazing.
