jon williams has this to say about neu! 2:

"neu 2, they're having too much fun on the second side. they should get back to their serious krautrocking. none of this "rock" shit. this is my sincere belief here. i'm very sincere in this. (giggles) they sound like little richard practically. like, the guitar sound. i'n just waiting for someone to do some early fifties "rock" yell thing. neu i is fine. it's serious enough. it doesn't have that rock and roll bullshit. it is krautrock enough."

jon williams on acid, ladies and gentlemen.

Ian Johnson (orion), Friday, 26 March 2004 06:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm guessing he hasn't heard Neu 75 then?

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 26 March 2004 06:59 (twenty-two years ago)

*slow clap*

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 26 March 2004 06:59 (twenty-two years ago)

more kraut, less rock for the jon williams.

dean! (deangulberry), Friday, 26 March 2004 07:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Neu 2's second side is a waste though. Who ever listens to that second side?

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 26 March 2004 07:10 (twenty-two years ago)

i like 2 better than 75!

geeta (geeta), Friday, 26 March 2004 08:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I bet it doesn't have a 10 minute long hippy track

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Friday, 26 March 2004 08:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Side 1 of "Neu! 2" is the best single side of a Neu record ever, but "Neu '75" is their best album. Not to discount how great "Neu!" is. Oh fuck, they're all good, even forgiving the silliness of Side 2 of "Neu! 2" (which was an excuse to fill a side and hence a record contract, as they had only recorded Side 1 and a single "Neuschnee/Super", due to, um, constraints at the time or something like that)

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 26 March 2004 08:23 (twenty-two years ago)

TS: jon williams on acid vs jon williams.

x-post: I think they ran out of money donut.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 26 March 2004 08:27 (twenty-two years ago)

of course side 2 of Neu! 2 includes the Neuschnee/Super single right, making it only half bad anyway.

Geeta, you're crazy. I love the punk songs on 75 so goddamn much. And I like the atmospheric stuff.

Of course I may like the 2 La Dusseldorf record more then the Neu! records anyway...

is that an unpopular opinion?

Also, is Klaus Dinger racist? Am I reading to much into "White Overalls"?

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 26 March 2004 08:39 (twenty-two years ago)

re: "White Overalls" - it's not just a fashion statement then? I never would have linked it to racism... I mean, the record is littered with hippie-lyrics. "White Overalls" is such a blast! Never failes to cheer me up, great yell-along song. :)

As for Viva: it's a great record, but doesn't top the Neu! ones IMO.

willem (willem), Friday, 26 March 2004 08:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Also 75 has the stuff Bowie ripped off! ("Red Sails")

Oh man, yeah, I just put it on --- 75 is definitely their best.

There are three La Dusseldorf records! And yeah, you are probably in the minority with that particular stance, Dan, but they're definitely great. Heck, I'm probably right there in the minority with you: I think Harmonia made the best records of the whole axis!!

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 26 March 2004 09:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I love the first four Rother solo. It took a while for 'katzenmusik' to sink in but I'm there now.

(Jon L), Friday, 26 March 2004 09:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I bought Neu and Neu2 on the new CD formats.

I eventually 'obtained' Neu75 and play that the most, more because I keep finding 'burn' versions knocking around, than making a concious efft to play the first 2.

I like Neu2 loads, as they say the side 2 is only 50% messin' so its a 75% complete album and the other 25% i like mighty fine too.

The best one? Which is the one with the water sounds and the road drill? (I listened to it on my way home on 'train, and the outside (passed a river, walked through town) matched exactly the album...)

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 26 March 2004 09:24 (twenty-two years ago)

i've only heard Neu 2 so far, but i like it lots, so if the others are better then i'm in for a treat!

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 26 March 2004 09:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Dan's aware of the existance of 3 La D. records, he was probably referring to the 2nd album. :)

The two first Harmonia albums are indeed amazing, with "Watussi", "Sehr Kosmisch", "Monza (rauf und runter)" there's a lot of kraut's best output.

And while we seem to be exploring the axis: let me extend it to embrace Cluster's Zuckerzeit!

jim: get them all, you won't be dissapointed.

willem (willem), Friday, 26 March 2004 09:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, Jim, get them all!

I lent a mate "Deluxe", "Neu" and "Neu '75" three years ago and he's still not given them back. I miss them, I really do, especially "Deluxe". It's so melancholy. Oh, he had some Rother CDs too. I must get back to him...

I'm not sure which of the La D albums I love most, probably "Viva" for "Rheinita" which is a gorgeous piece of music.

Rob M (Rob M), Friday, 26 March 2004 10:14 (twenty-two years ago)

75 = teh suck
1 = ok
2 = CKASSIC because of lila engl. and side b is so crazy i like thtat!

:|, Friday, 26 March 2004 12:30 (twenty-two years ago)

because of lila engl

Yes'm and then some. Love all three albums but "Lila Engel" is just...I mean, if ever a stadium needed to have that cranked up in it in full surround-sound.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 26 March 2004 14:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I am so digging this up, this weekend...

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 26 March 2004 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

calling 75 teh suck is like syphillis addled mentalism of the highest order

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 26 March 2004 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, is Klaus Dinger racist? Am I reading to much into "White Overalls"?

It's about overalls that are white, that's all. There's pictures of the LaD lads wearing them all over the inner sleeve of the album. It's about fashion not fascism! Ha ha.

Also 75 has the stuff Bowie ripped off! ("Red Sails")

Actually, "Red Sails" is really a rip off of "Monza" by Harmonia, play the two back to back and you'll see. Eno was a big big fan of "Deluxe".

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 26 March 2004 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

actually, I forgot about the third La Dusseldorf record, I don't have it.

He sings "new style hits the city, oy ya, White Overalls" then later listen how he starts chanting "White Over All, Over All Over All"

I feel like Woody Allen in Annie Hall..."he didn't say did you eat, he said Jew eat?"

Anyway, I'm a huge fan of this axis of krautrock(ok, bad choice of words "axis") much more then the cosmic couriers type stuff.

Mid period Cluster, Zuckerzeit and Soweiso are fantastic, and the Harmonia records.

I discovered what my favorite band in the world would be when I took the first La Dusseldorf record and distorted it a bit.

Eno was a big enough of a fan of Cluster/Harmonia to move to Berlin and work with them on 3 albums!

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 26 March 2004 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Well I know what you mean about "White Overalls", Dan - I agree to sometimes feeling a mite uncomfortable on hearing a German singing "White over all, over all, over all" (at least he didn't sing "Uber alles, uber alles, uber alles" tho!). However that's just a combination of Herr Dinger's goofball humour and English not being his first language - I really do think it is about the white overalls him and boys are camping about in on the album sleeve.

The third La Dusseldorf album is "Individuellos", which isn't s good as the first two but is still pretty spiffing. However, if you have suspicions about The Dinger's politics maybe you'd better not listen to "Dampfriemen" which (to me anyway) evokes a bierkeller full of SA men, clinking steins of lager and planning the next Putsch.

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 26 March 2004 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

of the three Neu! albums, i love 75 the most. and the dueseldorf (s/t) record i have is pretty hot. i also have La! Neu? "Year of the Tiger" (I can't remember what year it is, but it's pretty late, maybe even 90s) and it's surprisingly good (or maybe what i mean is surprisingly not bad)

JaXoN (JasonD), Friday, 26 March 2004 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the first one (neu!) best. I had an old uk vinyl pressing w/sleevenotes by dave brock from hawkwind!! Also, I had a 7" from the second album "neuschnee"/"Super", which was pretty good, b/c you could play it and different speeds on yer turntable, and get a good part of the album experience.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 26 March 2004 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't understand how Neu! running out of money prevented them from recording new songs, yet allowed them to do remixes.
Or is it just that they weren't getting along?

Magic City (ano ano), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 17:28 (twenty-two years ago)

It's not really a remix when you record a 45 onto tape while messing with the speeds.

Lil' Fancy Kpants (ex machina), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

So it just took a lot less studio time, hence being cheaper, you mean?

Magic City (ano ano), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, yeah, that, plus probably using a much cheaper studio too.

From Amazon.co.uk
Neu! 2 must have Stereolab quietly fuming: the sweet repetition on the 11-minute opening track "Fur Immer" here defines the parameters of the Francopop-loving bachelor-pad band's sound so accurately, it's uncanny. Until this long overdue reissue, however, only a handful of famous musicians--David Bowie, Kraftwerk, Add N To (X), DAF, Blur--have heard this relatively obscure album, first released in 1973. Stereolab aren't the only group this experimental, minimalist, unsettlingly beautiful Germanic duo influenced, though; you can hear traces of Suicide's aggressive disco punk and almost every present-day dance band within Klaus Dinger's almost robotic, forceful drumming on "Spitzenqualitat" and the final "Super". What strikes the listener most about Neu! 2, however, is the sheer enjoyment these aural visionaries were deriving from their conveyor belt grooves: ecstatic yelps of ecstasy sometimes obliterating the percussive din, keyboardist Michael Rother thumping his guitar like he's the first child on a new motorway of sound which, indeed, he was. Tracks are sped up and then slowed down, almost at random. It's indispensable listening. --Everett True

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 21 October 2005 13:49 (twenty years ago)

I like ET, but that write-up makes no sense. It's never been that difficult to pick up used a 12" of any Neu album, surely? Plus, who gives a fucking shit about what famous musicians have heard it!?!? Why doesn't he mention Dave Brock on his list anyway!?!?!?

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 21 October 2005 13:52 (twenty years ago)

I'm pretty sure the Neuschnee/Super single was a cheap single released by United Artists to try to promote the band (cf. "Faust Tapes" being sold for 49p) - my sister bought it in 1972 and she wouldn't have been the only one

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 21 October 2005 13:56 (twenty years ago)

And Pash is right, the single and the albums were fairly easy to find especially "Neu 2" - which I imagine a lot of people bought and thought, "What's this load of old pony" and ditched pronto.

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 21 October 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)

Actually the "neuschee/supe" 7' single is to "neu 2" is as the NME "brain salad surgery" sampler flexi to "BSS" itself. All those versions of the tracks played at different speeds are kind of a cute concept, but tiresome to actually listen to. The first album j-pwnz "neu2". (whereas "BSS" is shit, with a couple of good bits, all of which are on the flexi)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 21 October 2005 14:12 (twenty years ago)
