As for Fennesz, I've got to big-up Mark for his Pitchfork review; I might not have checked out 'Endless Summer' were it not for his glowing recommendation! Excellent as usual, Mr. My-Favorite-'Fork- Writer (no offense, Ethan--you've only written one, right? ;-).

Also, I think the new Richie Hawtin is staggeringly good--very tactile and expertly put-together. Even though I know next to nothing about techno, I can tell that he's incredible.

    1) Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory

Omar (or anyone else who has heard it) -- how's the Green Velvet?

    Andy, Tuesday, 23 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Rather good. Has some funny songs, some banging floorfillers (track 7 or so, has an amazing slo-mo breakdown and then when the build-up let's go you're The Human Canonball That Shoots Straight Into THe Heart Of The Universe) and a strange 80s flavour at times that isn't retro-electro-ish, but at times reminds me of Ministry ('Stop Lying') or...ahem...The Pixies ('The Great American Tragedy'). It's pretty hard/harsh overall.

    Omar, Tuesday, 23 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

    1. Beachwood Sparks "Once We Were Trees" 2. Tompaulin "The Town & the City" 3. Bobby Conn "The Golden Age" 4. Kevin Tihista "Don't Breathe a Word" 5. Beulah "Coast is Never Clear"

    Pulp!

    scott p., Tuesday, 23 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

    1) Red Dagger (comp of MP3s from mp3.com made by friend. leftist lyrics, incredible beats, from the Bay Roots collective largely, it seems).

2)Bubba Sparxxx -- Dark Days, Bright Nights (Lovely jumped right at me, but the rest of the tracks need time to sink in. The Organized Noize stuff is as good as the Timba stuff)

3)Velvet Underground -- Bootleg Series v.1 (surprising range of performances -- focuses on the slower side, which I'm not used to)

    4) R. Kelly -- 12 Play (Awwww yeah....)

    5) I'm buying that blink album next.

Sterling Clover, Tuesday, 23 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

    4. Pinback - This Is Pinback (ILM listening chambers are dangerous)
    5. Beck, Jeff - You Had It Coming (see last comment)
    6. House of Love - The Creation recording 86-88 (Guy Chadwick is an indiepop genius)
    7. Joy Division - Heart & Soul (as a fan I need this even though I have all records)
    8. Fink - Fink (very good German singing americana-no depresion style band)

alex in mainhattan, Tuesday, 23 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Lucksmiths- Why That Doesn't Surprise Me, Happy Secret and What Bird Is That?
    Comet Gain- Tigertown Pictures
The Essex Green- Everything Is Green

Curiously enough, I've just come back from touring with these bands. And they all kicked major-league ass. And I am so fucking tired.

    emil.y, Tuesday, 23 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Er......can't remember what else, Lucinda Williams maybe? Car Wheels on a Dirt Road.

    Ronan, Tuesday, 23 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ricky, we got sent a copy of the Tompaulin album to the office, so I figured the vague wording of the question gave me a perfect opportunity to show off about it. It is very good indeed, by the way - but then I expect you know that!

Andrew Williams, Tuesday, 23 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

    I can only remember three:

    The Wedding Present "Bizarro"

    The Wedding Present "Sea Monsters"

    The Carter Family [some compilation]

All lovely chirpy records. The Carter Family one has these pictures of them all smiling and looking happy. Which is a complete swizz, everyone knows the Carters were the most miserable people who ever lived.

    DV, Tuesday, 23 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

    I have just ordered stuff:

Ballboy - Singles compilation. Bis - Chemikal Underground EP thing. Six By Seven - So close (new single). Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Whatever happened...EP. Sing-Sing - The Joy Of. LP. Ex-Lush. Good.

I see there is a ms. Kittin album or something. Anyone heard? Also, when the Le Tigre getting a UK release?

    Muslimgauze - Mullah .... ?
    Slam - Alien Radio
    Perlon compilation – Superlongevity
    Crydamore compilation

And all the albums that everyone else seems to be into.

    K-reg, Tuesday, 23 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If there was ONE Dud on a Mission of Burma: C or D thread, I'd start crackin' skulls. They're 75% reunited, by the way - I believe Mr. Martin Swope is not interested. Damn shame.

    Just went shopping @ lunch:

  • Aphex Twin - Drukqs
  • Solex - Low Kick and Hard Bop
  • Ryan Adams - Gold
  • Fugazi - The Arguement
  • New Order - Power, Corruption, and Lies

David Raposa, Tuesday, 23 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

  • Fritz, Andrew-how's that Beachwood Sparks record? As good as everyone says it is? Should I give in and buy it?

    Arthur, Tuesday, 23 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Screen Prints - Perfect City (with a little careful production ...) Chris Kowanko - Spell (one of my favorite songwriters back after 8 years) !!! - !!! (late 70's style NYC art-funk-punk) The Strokes - Is This It (backwards is the only way we know how to go) My Favorite - A Cult of One (they haven't lay down a bad track yet)

    zaxxon25, Tuesday, 23 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was disappointed by the new Beachwood Sparks, but then I really loved the first one and people had been saying this one was even better so I was expecting to be blown away. I just found the production a little sludgey compared with the brightness of the first, and the melodies not as strong. That said, I really haven't given it much of a chance yet. Maybe it will grow on me.

    fritz, Tuesday, 23 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

    V/A - this is Mod Volume 5
    Ryan Adams - Gold
Go Kart Mozart - Instant Wigwam and Igloo Mixture
    Spearmint - A Different Lifetime
The Chameleons (UK) - Why Call It Anything?

there might have been a couple others but techincally i think these were the last 5... Haven't had time to listen to it all yet, but the Spearmint CD is decent, which reminds me...All Music Guide!! Someone on there gave "A Week Away" by Spearmint 1.5 stars! WTF? I think you need someone to review indiepop. I think "A Week Away" is worth at least the 3 stars that a masterpiece like, say Foreigner's "Agent Provacateur" gets in your guide. Where do you come up with these ratings? Whatever...

    g, Tuesday, 23 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Fritz, Arthur - I think the Beachwood Sparks LP is absolutely amazing, but I have to say the first few times I played it I was really disappointed. One of those albums that just clicked after a while I suppose. They are playing UK dates in December if anyone's interested, 4/12 at the 100 Club apparently.

Bill - the Ms Kittin and the Hacker album is a work of genius, from the cover artwork to the tracks themselves.

Andrew Williams, Friday, 26 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yeah, i picked it up in Other Music. i didn't realise it was difficult to get hold of. kind of makes up for missing the Red Planet comp cd. also got sent suede's sc-fi lullabies, and a lamb cd has been placed in my room by a housemate.

Dominique -- What do you think of Glam? Did you get the Japanese import? I love that album.

Well, it was actually a CDR trade that brought it to me, so no Japanese import for me.

I've only heard it twice since I got it, but I like it. A little similar to some of Iaora Tahiti's quieter moments -- and I know I heard some sections that were actually from Iaora. This was recorded before that, wasn't it?

    Updated last five:
In A Silent Way: Complete Sessions, Miles Davis
    Japanese Independent Music, Various (Sonore)
    Super Roots 7, Boredoms
    Endless Summer, Fennesz
    Confield, Autechre

    dleone, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No, Glam was recorded just after Tahiti, around the time of Autioditacker. And I know exactly which passage you're talking about, though, the opening part from "Gocard" pops up on Glam (my favorite Mouse on Mars release.) If you like the Glam/Instrumentals era, you might look into Lithops if you haven't already.

two albums of crummy chrismas music, an even crummier Celtic comp, Devo's Freedom of Choice and the the CD that came with the most recent issue of Q Magazine (it ends with Starsailor and the Stereophonics. Now I know why all you Brits hate them so damned much.) So only one thing that was worth listening to.

I rented some Boulez and Cage from the library. Still need to listen to it though. Freaking ELO (on repeat) gives me gigantic headache the following day. Dyang it.

Ned, do you ever hear faint echoes of the Birthday Party in Lateralus?

sundar subramanian, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

HMMMM. I wouldn't put it past Maynard being a Cave fan, but I think the difference between the two bands is that Tool is much more obviously and overtly structured, where the Birthday Party was to a large extent about being messy (or *seeming* to be messy, given that a lot of their songs are fairly straightforward). If that makes any sense, which it probably doesn't. Where do you hear the connection?

Ned Raggett, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

dom why are you buying bad underground hiphop?

    ethan, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oh wait i read duane as dom, carry on.

    ethan, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I wanna be a snob. hah! Read about Cage so much I might as well check out his records. Boulez as well.

    helenfordsdale, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Uh sorry, I got Trois Sonates Pour Piano (Boulez) and Sonatas & Interludes For Prepared Piano. (Cage). Waddaysay? Any good?

    helenfordsdale, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ethan - how could i not buy a record with the line "they killed biggie, tupac & abe lincoln"?

    duane, Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

no i like legion okay, it's just that i thought you were dominique who has like no hiphop to begin with and therefore shouldn't be starting with third class good-not-great underground kids like them .

    ethan, Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ned: Well, I said "faint echoes." The differences are obvious. Little things like the way "Ticks and Leeches" starts out - the beat, the ringing buzzy guitar, the screams. Some of the beat and guitar sounds in "Triad." The atmosphere, a little bit, of some of those tracks. It's got me started listening to Soundgarden again too. "Reflection" is my favourite at the moment.

Helen: Both are excellent, as you've no doubt discovered.

sundar subramanian, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Reflection" is pretty damn great. :-) And now that you put it that way re: the Party...intriguing.

mark: i've listened to them all, at least 'ere briefly. the cornelius i like, but not love. it's more "abstract" than fantasma which may mean it bears further listens to get into it. the to roccoco rot is beguiling to say the least. there's something going on there which pleases me immensely, but i can't put my finger on it. again, more listens would help. the boredoms is just to replace an old copy; it's good clean fun, natch. ;) hypercity is brilliant, but i plan on covering it in a micro-house essay (coming soon to a site near you?), so i shant devulge any of the goods just yet.

(btw mark, re-email me yr address, as i have those boredoms cd's ready to go for you.)

"El Nene" con las Estrellas de Areito: Cuidao con el Perro. This is the best of the batch of salsa CDs I ordered at the beginning of the month. Very Cuban sounding, but traditional salsa as opposed to that newer timba stuff, or that older son, rumba, etc. I wish I had something smart to say about it, but I'm still getting familiar with it. The chorus backing up the singer is quite nice. (Maybe that's "las Estrellas de Areito"?)

Azuquita: Lo Bailado Nadie me lo Quita. Azuquita is a Panamanian singer who appears on one of my favorite 70's salsa albums (only dicovered by me in the past few years): Louie Ramirez y Sus Amigos. This is good but doesn't blow my mind like that earlier recording.

Mariano Civico: De Costa a Costa. I haven't actually listened to this yet, I've just skimmed through the beginnings of all the songs. It doesn't sound too promising. Seems to be from the whimpier end of Puerto Rican salsa. (And I think I may prefer PR salsa, overall, incidentally.)

Joe Arroyo and Juan Carlos Coronel: Los Reyes del Tropico. This is not what I was looking for either: none of this is actually salsa per se. I already have Arroyo's original version of some of these songs, and while they are okay, I don't need additional variations. I might try to sell this.

[Joe Bataan had to be returned because the liner notes were stuck to the CD.]

Sun Ra and His Arkestra: Cosmo Sun Connection. If you're looking for a recording to introduce you to Sun Ra, don't start here. I bought this directly from the band and gave them a little more than they were asking for it, so in this case my purchase was more of a gesture of support than a simple exchange, which is probably a good thing since this is a short CD and for the most part is just okay, aside from some pretty funny sounds coming from Sun Ra's synthesizer. I suppose it could grow on me. The version of "Fate in a Pleasant Mood" here, which starts things off, is a little too peppy for me, and "Cosmo Journey Blues" is a little too bluesy for me (though live this sort of thing can work for me). On the other hand, "Cosmonaut Astronaut Rendezvous" has some pretty nice solo saxophone.

Barry Adamson + Pan Sonic - Motorlab #3

Who's Barry Adamson? What's this all about?

Mark S: How do you like Toys In the Attic? I've been wondering if I should go about buying it back. I think I ranked it among the greatest albums ever when I was 12 but it doesn't seem that consistent in retrospect.

sundar subramanian, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Barry Adamson's the old bass player from Magazine and the Bad Seeds, among other things, but he's also got this great string of Jim Thompsonesque seedy jazz-noir albums on Mute (check out As Above So Below for one of the more accessible of the bunch, Moss Side Story for one of the more narrative). For this one, though, he and Pan Sonic team up more as composers, and the piece is performed by a choir complemented by electronics. The piece itself is about 12 minutes, but there's a fairly lengthy "remix" version done by Hafler Trio included on the album, too. Very nice.

Sean Carruthers, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Various Artists, Tea in Marrakech -- Picked up on Christgau's recommendation. The cheesy production values make it hard to love but the last track is rousing.

Various Artists, Truck Driver's Boogie: Big Rig Hits, 1939- 1969 -- Still haven't listened to it yet. What the hell's wrong with me?

Milton Nascimento/Lô Borges, Clube de Esquina -- Perfect, sappy, or perfectly sappy...I haven't decided what this is yet. It has "San Vicente" which I've called the best song ever ever ever, and none of the tracks seem overshadowed by that little piece of heartbreak, and most of the tracks have this beautiful sunshowery feel to it...yet...

The Tallis Scholars, dir. by Peter Phillips, Victoria Requiem/Alonso Lobo: Versa est in luctum -- When I listen to this as I fall asleep, it sounds just like every other piece of Renaissance music I own, which is (yes) very lovely but lacking in distinction. Maybe one day it'll stand out. Maybe it never will.

Stanton Warriors, The Stanton Session -- No show-off skullfucks on the order of their "Doom's Night" and "Demons" remixes, but I'm not complaining much.

"Softly with These Songs: The Best of Roberta Flack" (A childhood favorite. Mostly I like the early 70's hits, but there is a disco song from 1980 that is unfamiliar and sounds pretty good.)

"The Very Best of Dusty Springfield" (I like this but not quite as much as I thought. I am struggling to get past some aspects of the production, especially the strings which I could do without. Virtually none of this is really very familiar to me, but I like her voice and I think the CD should grow on me.)

Univers Zero "1313" (The store I was counting on didn't have the Etron Fou Leloublan album I wanted and has no plans to restock, so I decided to get this as a related substitute. Don't like it. They have an interesting overall sound, but I don't like their approach to rhythm, which is too rigid for me. It's not cheery music, but I don't find it particularly depressing or disturbing, just kind of annoying after a while.)

United States of America (I probably could have done without this. My favorite is the song I bought it for, "Coming Down," but I do also like "Love Song for the Dead Che." The free-wheelin' social commentary is a bit tiresome, e.g, "I Won't Leave My Wooden Wife for You, Sugar".) np: Fairouz "Andaloussiyat" What a great voice.

    DeRayMi, Sunday, 3 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

but I don't find it particularly depressing or disturbing, just kind of annoying after a while

Thank you. I find that band very rigid, and a bit overrated. What Etron Fou album were you looking for? You know, you can get their entire studio output on 43 Songs X 3 CD.

That's the one. This store has had it for a while, but when I went to buy it, it was gone. The buyer said that they won't be getting it back in, so I ordered it online. I'm not sure I'll like it, but I like the general "RIO" sound, and I like Etron Fou's contribution to Fred Frith's "Speechless."

Proof positive that Michael Jackson is a nerve-damaged freak.
