I like Interpol.

That album is just really enjoyable. I could care less about the Joy Division derivative thing. First of all, I don't really hear it. Maybe Joy Division is an influence, but so what. That's a good thing. I love Joy Division, so if a band sounds a bit like Joy Division, then I'm happy.

I dig Interpol some. I bought the album. I listen to it occasionally. I've liked Joy Division since I was 14 (about 10 years) and honestly I just don't see the connection. I mean, there's an influence for sure, but I wouldn't call it a rip off and I think anyone who does has a very shallow view of music. I mean, Interpol's a bit dark and moody can't sing, but after that the similarities pretty much end (or are just aspects that too many bands share to be notable).

I like Joy Division much better, but I think Interpol is an alright band and I'm growing tired of reading the two in the same sentence. I think liking Interpol was "hip" for about 3.5 seconds, and then someone compared them to JD which instantaneoulsy became a much hipper stance because it fit right in with the cynical, intelligent, couldn't-be-bothered-to-care hipster image.

And since when is just starting to listen to Joy Division last year such a bad thing. I mean, kids these days, where are they supposed to even be exposed to good music? On the radio? MTV? I was just lucky I was in the right place, with the right friends, at the right time, and ended up being into music enough that I continued to put the effort into exploring. The kids are alright, ok.

If the comparison point was with the Chameleons more, I would be happier and people would start listening to them more, a fine thing. (The Kitchens of Distinction reference above equally and deservedly applies.) As for Interpol, I'm sure they're keeping well in bad haircuts and coke.

The only time I've willingly listened to Blink 182 is when they had that video on MTV recently with the high school-as-prison motif, and all the kids busted out and danced around in their underwear. Some of the girls were pretty hot. In 1999, my favorite album was, like, Sam Prekop.

one of them worked/works at a vintage clothes shop I think? I don't think they sound that much like Joy Division, I'd probably like them better if they did. The music doesn't excite me, but it certainly isn't terrible, but I think most people are haters because of the way they look. I once requested one of them to play Ultravox while DJing and they responded "look, I just know, like the surface stuff, I don't dig as deep as you and XXXXX" so make of that what you will. That's the only Interpol-related story I can share.

oh yeah, Franz Ferdinand is the band this time. I've only heard 1 song by them, which is one less then what I've head from Interpol. Though I've heard the Morgan Geist remix, and it has some sexy production as usual. We've already had FF threads. Let's please have more bands that sound more and more like the Monochrome Set. Not that FF do, from what I've heard, but they're namechecked. The Monochrome Set is definately my favorite band in 2004.

I can never listen to the album, because it's just too slow and samey, but when "Obstacle 1" comes on the radio, I always mentally remark on what a great song it is. (Especially when it kicks into that whole final section that I always forget is coming.)

There's a time and place for both but seriously, quit ruining my fun with some kind of "the band that broke up when you were three were better!" bullshit.

Interpol raids twenty years of brit/wanna-be brit guitar tones, adds a heavier rhythm section and singing baiting lyrics about the girls they'd like to date. There's nothing remotely Joy Division about them at all. I like J.D. a bit more, but for totally different reasons. I think Interpol vs. Echo & The Bunnymen is a LOT more valid a debate. And I think Interpol win.

I heard one Kitchens album, Love Is Hell, and while I enjoyed it, they lack any Simon LeBon flair whatsoever.

Actually, yeah to the Chameleons. Full new album three years ago and the tour a year and a half ago was fucking stellar, beyond words, though I did try to say a few things.

I think all the "Interpol = Chameleons/KOD ripoffs" statements might be partly musical bragging, but moreso an opportunity for folks who were into the Chameleons and K.O.D. to passionate plug them once again, and also express and explain why Interpol doesn't really excite them. Understandably, this can come off badly. (I plead guilty to all of the above at one point.)

Also, two reason I think Interpol succeeded where, say, Kitchens didn't as much, is a) Interpol is three syllables, and b) Interpol didn't have overtly (literally) gay lyrics.

(Not to say having gay lyrics and few syllables is a recipe for non-success.. Frankie Goes To Hollywood is a shining counterexample to that, among others.. but for a three-to-four piece "indie" band, maybe so WAAAAAY back in the 90s)

To answer your question Nate.. Chameleons' first main phase broke up around 1987. Mark Burgess has done some low key solo shows ever since, and now the band are back. So, that's 15-20 years old, if you stretch it.

Kitchens were a younger band, and were -- too -- accused of being Chameleons rip-offs. They started right around the time the Chameleons first broke up, and ended in 1996 or so.

Interpol played in Zürichs Rote Fabrik last year and there was that guy in the audience that shouted during every quieter part: Fuck off you suck and other stuff in bad english. after a couple of minutes the singer hopped of stage, the band continued playing, he shoved his way thru the audience confronted that guy and broke his nose. he than made his way back on stage, the audience applauded warmly and they continued the song.
Actually I am not really sure if this a reason to love them or hate them.

He studied philosophy while at NYU and is probably the most verbose and articulate member of Interpol (which says a lot since they are all quite eloquent) He is half German and half Columbian and believes that his name is ethnically confusing for people. Carlos is the social butterfly of the band and has the snazziest moves while playing his bass. He used to play the keyboards when Eric wasn’t touring with them. And currently pursues another of his passions while not on tour: DJ’ing. He mostly spins 80’s/new wave stuff but also throws in some more obscure and current stuff into the mix. Catch him at a club if he comes to your town, for it is surely a sight to see and hear. Carlos is probably the easiest member to approach and seems to always be willing to talk/party with the fans. The man has a memory of steel too! He forgets nothing and no one!

To say that Daniel Kessler is the mastermind behind Interpol would be an understatement. Daniel has been a lover of music since he was a little kid back in England and prior to Interpol he gained much experience in the music biz by working at record labels such as Jetset, Beggars Banquet and Domino to name a few. He even worked for a production company. But Daniel formed the band on his own intuitions and not with the help of anyone from these companies. Daniel is one smart kat and he has admitted to that, “I’ve always felt like the hardest part was the formation of the band, that’s 50 percent of it. After that, a lot of it is hard work and being smart about things”.

Samuel Fogarino on Daniel, “He’s the assigned dedicated worrier for the band. He’s the most motivated person I have ever met in my whole life. That nervous energy has a severe output.”

Don’t be fooled by Daniel’s shyness because he can definitely rock out and sing lovely. He is sincere when you talk to him and interested in what you have to say, probably one of the nicest musicians you could ever meet and the only member of the band who doesn’t smoke!

As the lead singer for Interpol, Paul Banks surely packs a punch with his unique vocals and mysterious lyrics. He is the youngest member of the band and has had the privileged of having lived in various parts of the world. Sam is the elder statesman in the group. He had a good deal of musical experience under his belt prior to joining Interpol. He lived in Florida for a couple of years and was part of a band called the Holy Terrors, a punk rock band. Things didn’t turn out as he had hoped for them but things would work out for Sam later on when he moved to NYC and met Daniel. Sam went to Interpol’s second show (Greg was still a member) and was very impressed, which says a lot because in the past, the only band he fully believed in was the Holy Terrors. When Greg departed and Daniel sent Sam the Interpol self released EP, Sam knew immediately that this was something he wanted to be part of and it has been a blessed union of souls ever since. It is hard to imagine Interpol with out Sam. Quite possibly the most humble and kind member in the band, he can also play the drums like a beast and it is really impressive that he can play in those dress shirts ;)
