In the digital age with a culture of download first / listen later and the language of music becoming increasingly more pervasive and complex we accumulate a sheer mass of music with each single and album indicating something about us, however disposable, however credible.
These are mini mix tapes which seem to say so much without being awarded the careful thought and loving attention the ones we so carefully construct do. I’m romanticizing here but I’m in love with the random feature, despite its misgivings which have been pointed out above. I love the occasional hideous but ever so interesting sound clash of songs that winamp juxtaposes for us, the songs we have but hate, make us cringe; remind us of when things were different for us.
I confess I don’t know all the music on my computer as well as I should and in many ways I’m just a hoarder of compressed audio data but I love that data and I do feel it means something, especially when the music is placed in a new context. Sorry for being pretentious. Here's my lastest ten:

I've found that albums I intially greeted with a shrug have snook up on me via the random playlist. For years I regarded the uninterrupted flow of the album tracklist as not to be screwed with, but over the last 4 years or so listening to full albums is something I've done less and less. Perhaps this mirrors the consumption of music before the mid-60s, when singles were the main method of consumption. Anyways, everything sounds different when it's rubbing up against everything else.
Tonight's latest:1. Camera Obscura - Teenager2. Paul Simon - Me and Julio Down By the Schoolyard3. The Auteurs - Land Lovers4. Raekwon - Ice Cream Pt. 25. Bounty Killer - Bullz of Chicago6. Smog - Cold Blooded Old Times7. Gotan Project - Epoca8.

11. David Bowie - "Hang on to Yourself"
― Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 05:18 (twenty-one years ago)
1. Simon and Garfunkel, 'America'(so lovely and sad)2. Bon Jovi, 'Livin' On A Prayer'(the best pre-chorus bit ever, and then it goes up a key at the end.. the video is great; he's rehearsing his 'fly over the crowd' stunt, and in the last chorus we see the actual show, he's flying! Bon Jovi was always so happy; the nicest of the 80's rockers.)3. the Supremes, 'Nothing but Heartaches'(good, not their best, but I love the Supremes. a rather sinister song, actually)4. Blueboy, 'Try Happiness'(so lovely, so twee, i love them so)5. The Lilac Time, 'Jupe Longue'(one of Nick Duffy's circular banjo instrumentals, from the only Lilac album I haven't fallen in love with yet.)6. Mandalay, 'I Don't Want the Night To End'(pretty dull, to be honest. Mandalay were the ultimate also rans.)7. Survivor, 'The Search Is Over' (so I made my partner a cd of the ultimate power ballads. this didn;t make the cut, but i kept it anyways, god knows why. bleh)8. Steely Dan, 'Pixeleen'(my favourite song off the last album. it's about movies, but i can't quite work out if it's porno or not. there's some degree of exploitation, but not quite kiddie smut, i'm sure. scopophilia, definitely. the song is gorgeous and sleek, as luxury sedan as ever. an exquisite bridge, 'symmetrical and clean')9. Rickie Lee Jones, 'So Long'(really beautiful, string section and rhodes piano, 2 min. bit of song from the obscure 'girl at her volcano' release)10. Tony Rice, 'Fine as Fine Can Be'(bluegrass legend does Lightfoot. he does him better than anyone, though. classic.)

6."Simply Irrestible" by ____________ ?I downloaded this cover and I still don't know who's singing it. Acoustic guitar, electric stabs, indie-boy voice that sounds like it's trying for a punchy Malkmus style with a girl going la-la-la? If you know who it is, please write to me at Pleasant Plains, 500 Numbnut Avenue, Mailslot, Minnesota, 55569. thank you.
7. "I Must Be in Love" by the RutlesWhat's Geir Hongro gotta say about Dirk McQuirkly's solo career?

10. "Because" by the BeatlesA song that's a little out of place when played on shuffle.

from now on, i implore everyone to write a description of each song. could be fun to reflect a little bit on songs we mightn't be accustomed to hearing all that often.
― Charlie Howard, Thursday, 2 August 2007 07:42 (eighteen years ago)
I agree that a description of each song and what you like about it would do wonders for this thread. I'm interested in hearing about new things, but a list isn't going to do much for me. I don't have the kind of time or cash to hunt down each random song.
― humansuit, Thursday, 2 August 2007 15:56 (eighteen years ago)
1. Wire - "Surgeon's Girl" I just bought Pink Flag, and I haven't even been able to make it through one whole listen yet, so I think this is the first time I'm hearing this. Pretty good; I wish more of the album sounded like this. Maybe it does, who knows (not me).
2. Pavement - "Instrumental" (from disc 2 of the Crooked Rain Crooked Crooked Rain reissue) Mellow but pointless. I would enjoy this much more if I weren't all fired up from the last song. Okay, now I'm kind of getting into it. Unfortunately, it's not as mellow or as good as "Strings of Nashville", thus rendering it doubly pointless. Maybe if it had vocals (can't remember if there's a version somewhere that does). But even then, would it be better than the version of "Strings of Nashville" with vocals? Probably not. I do have a soft spot for totally pointless Pavement jams though, so maybe I'm just getting what I deserve.
3. Against Me! - "T.S.R. (This Shit Rules)" Another album that I haven't listened to a lot, another song that I don't really recognize. This would've been great coming after the Wire song, but the yo-yo thing isn't really working for me. Good song, I'll have to listen to this album some more too.
4. XTC - "Rocket From a Bottle" Eh, not one of my favorites. For me, this song is about where Black Sea starts to lose it. Nice drums, but I wish these lyrics had gone to a song that was more fun and less annoying. The guitar solo is kind of nifty; the key change sucks.
5. Why? - "Sick 2 Think" Objectivity is impossible here; I'm a total Why? stan. Like the dubby bassline, which clashes with the piano chord voicings in a way which I hadn't really noticed before. Lyrics great as always ("the nuclear spill of don't-walk orange on mushrooms").
6. Quasimoto - "Raw Deal" I like the opening part with the flute, but the song proper is possibly even better. That incessant cowbell (?) is the kind of stupidly great thing that only Madlib can get away with (and even then, only about half the time). Dumb outro with dusty old samples about getting high, but who cares, that's half the point of this album.
7. Sonic Youth - "Teenage Riot" Well duh, this is a stone-cold classic. The rare song with "riot" in its title which makes me want to do just that.
8. Swell Maps - "Robot Factory" I've never liked Swell Maps as much as I hoped to. I don't like the place this starts and it doesn't really go anywhere from there. I think it's supposed to be atmospheric, but it's not pretty (or ugly) enough. The title doesn't quite seem to fit. I kinda see what they were going for but the sound effects just seem too small and chintzy to pull it off. Maybe that's the joke, and I just don't get it?
9. Destroyer - "The Night Moves" Another album I just bought, just ripped, and haven't really given a good listen to. There is a lot of "li-di-di-di"-ing and not a lot of lyrics, which is kind of a bummer for a Bejar song. Then again, if you'd just listened to an entire album's worth of them, I could see how this would be a nice respite.
10. Ice Cube (feat. Das EFX) - "Check Yo Self" Now we're getting somewhere! I actually like this version more than the better-known "The Message"-sampling one released as a single. Even though I don't mind House of Pain, I have no problem with Cube dissing them when he's beating them this badly at their own game.

Nicely done.

1. the smiths - 'there is a light that never goes out' a fantastic, nostalgic song. beautiful orchestration in the chorus. brings a huge smile to my face to hear it for the first time in a while. one of the better tracks on one of my very favourite records.
2. foo fighters - 'everlong' quite amusing that this popped up given the canning i've been giving them on ilx just recently. well, it's a nicely constructed song and dave is sounding sincere enough to pull the whole thing off. an admittedly infectious chorus, and that opening riff still speaks volumes.
3. bob dylan - 'rollin' and tumblin'' one of the more anonymous titles on the latest dylan opus and one that i hadn't developed any sort of opinion of until now. it's a rollicking bluesy number with appropriately subtle and restrained instrumentation. i tend to prefer the slower stuff on this particular record, however ('nettie moore' etc.)
4. kate bush - 'watching you without me' a quiet, especially mellow kate number. a nice vocal line, complemented by some muffled backing vox. then there's an intersting shift at about the 2:30 mark with a backward looped vocal effect or equivalent. not a huge fan of that effect, given kate's general ability to entertain vocally without the use of such obvious studio tactics.
5. black sabbath - 'warning' this one seems like an extension of 'sleeping village', more than anything. works its way into a nice comfortable groove and then ozzy chimes in and it's all vintage sabbath. nice
6. the new pornographers - 'ballad of a comeback kid' my least favourite member is singing, but its a typically catchy, enjoyable song from a band i generally like to take in small doses. an album's worth of this upbeat, enthusiastic stuff can at times be too much to take. nice chord progression on this track.
7. nick drake - 'one of these things first' gentle fusion of guitar and piano works perfectly. one of the man's many great vocal lines, rising and dipping in time with the swirling musical backdrop. a pleasure to listen to.
8. supergrass - 'time' haven't heard it in a while. i recall most of the stuff on this record being pretty frantically paced, and this one is much more relaxed. this is probably an example of a track that sounds better in the album context, contributing to the dynamics and variety of the record itself. in isolation, it doesn't do a great deal.
9. amorphis - 'better unborn' pretty fascinating opening track from 'elegy'. the band hadn't sounded like this previously and never sounded it like it again (apart from elsewhere on this record). nice integration of harmonics and wah from the guitarist, bizarre combination of growling and clean vocals from two different singers. a vaguely middle eastern feel. strange coming from a finnish group, i'd suggest.
10. nirvana - polly (new wave) it's polly! sped up! you all know it. sounds a little redundant to me, but it's all in the name of food fun.
― Charlie Howard, Thursday, 2 August 2007 18:13 (eighteen years ago)
malcolm - ghostface killah
mean-ass drum sound especially the snare, really sweet flow cramming in all that information without sounding like it's particularly hard, typically great Supreme Clientele track
ballin - above the law
smooth low-rider west coast stuff from A.T.L., just terrific mellow stuff, these guys had the best groove
hate to love me - w.a.s.p.
From "unholy terror," a long-past-anybody-else-caring record but I have always liked their mad-max-world-is-ending vibe, they're like the metal anti-T. Rex
nobody walks away from love unhurt - william bell
William Bell in a Latin mood, the Oye Como Va sorta rhythm underneath buttery 70s soul - not a tremendous song but I like anything Bell produces, his sounds are so wonderful
trill - clipse
I skipped it. I accidentally got the clean version of this, I fucking hate listening to clean versions of anything, I don't care how nice the beat is.
do what you gotta do - roberta flack
this is from "chapter two," her second album - she was something of a folkie at first though my favorite stuff is the "feel like makin' love" album & "blue light in the basement" which is just right exactly the sort of thing I love. so, this is "grand"er, still has its feet in the sixties to my ear, which isn't to say it's not wonderful 'cause it is, so sad and direct and the chords are just fantastic. muted horns at the end a super-nice touch. but she got much better over the next couple of albums.
swinging the classics medley - dave frishberg
frishberg live at lincoln center, solo piano, no vocals on this track, just a bunch of classical 'standards' strung together and recast in several jazz piano styles (some stride, some some fifties voice-inversion style, you hear more as you listen harder) - a much better listen than any description of it will make it sound, Frishberg's wit is really a joy
poppies - rebecca pearcy
oh wow awesome, seriously one of my favorite songs of all time, spare drums & piano & acoustic guitar & confessional yearning conflicted love song stuff - when it hits the bridge, it really gathers steam and the drums heat up and she starts singing this rather orgasm-like "oh! oh!" refrain - just awesome, awesome, when I am abroad and lonesome I listen to this and it just wrecks me
shout out - risqay
seven-second vocal drop from the "girls in the hood vol. 1" mixtape - shuffle gives and takes away!
original man - lord jamar feat. raekwon & kasim allah
same jogging/skipping-record/single-groove production style as the ghostface jam that started these ten, weird! this is 5%er stuff (the album's called "the five percent album") from lord jamar's underrated '06 record. very very old-school feel, postive mathematics stuff in the lyrics that I really enjoy - uplifting, yet badass

Keeping the iTunes weeded is the way to win at this game. Let me know what you think:
1. "Because the Night" Patti Smith This is all about Brooce. I had a big period of almost-but-not-quite getting into him, and this dates from then. I vaguely knew it beforehand and was surprised to find out he'd written it. To be honest I prefer his lower-key stuff. I don't really like her voice and I'd prefer if he was singing, but it's a cracking song anyway. What's interesting to me is that both artists press the right buttons, but don't quite speak to me (the likes of Tom Joad apart). I guess because they both have that slightly-earnest alternative-american thing going on, and as a dam' furriner it's quite hard to relate to it.
2. "Folsom Prison Blues" Johnny Cash Classic. This is the Folsom Prison live version (is there another?). Two of the greatest lines of all time. The Reno one you know. The 'Hello, I'm Johnny Cash' one you know too, but damn, it's cool. What I like most is the audience response. You can tell they're really loving it, much more than you can from bigger shows (e.g. 7 below).
3. "The View From The Afternoon" Arctic Monkeys This is one of their finest. Alex Turner's lyrics are really good (though he has much better sets than this). I like it how he can be british-provincial but universal at the same time, which is rarer than it really should be. It makes me angry (still!) at Oasis - taking pride out of being meaningless. Y'know, people are listening. I also like the video, which I reckon shows exactly how great a drummer Matt Helders is (and he's not even in it!).
4. "This Ain't A Scene, It's An Arms Race" Fall Out Boy Classic. I know nothing about them, other than the kids like them and the singer looks terrible. I like the backing vocals especially. There's something about this song that reminds me of Backstreet Boys and I don't know why - anyone else get that?
5. "Acid Trax" Phuture No idea why I have this, but it's unique in my collection so safe from being weeded. It's only three minutes long, but I gather that the original is about twenty minutes. Who would ever need such a track?
6. "Walking With Jesus (demo)" Spacemen 3 I despise this lot for being such cop-outs, but this is quite a nice and clever little ditty. I don't remember much of their later stuff, but I'll bet it was all downhill from here.
7. "I Feel Like I'm Fixing To Die Rag" Country Joe & The Fish Hmm. This is the Woodstock version. I quite like the chorus, and it's another one unique in my collection, but I don't think I could truthfully recommend it to anyone. I don't like how you get the impression that he feels he's making a big, brave statement. What could be less brave than criticising the government to an audience of 300,000 hippies?
8. "Sweet and Tender Hooligan" The Smiths Classic. Like all good maladjusted british teenagers, I was really into the Smiths. I borrowed Louder Than Bombs on cassette from a pal, but somehow this passed me by. I only looked it up again recently (in response to a thread on here) and can't believe I missed it. Amazing: great tune, great lyrics, in a way not unlike the Arctic Monkeys at 3 above. I like best the political point-of-view, so unlike normal Morrissey and his sympathy for the outsider. A recognition that sometimes you have to choose one evil over another, a nuance that Country Joe could really have used.
9. "Lilac Wine" Jeff Buckley I'm a bit bored with Jeff these days. Can't fault any of the stuff completed while he was alive, so this is still good, but it's not one of my favourites.
10. "Relax" Frankie Goes To Hollywood Utterly, utterly classic. This is one of the best five records ever made, in my view. It's the classic 80s track, yet it doesn't sound dated at all. The production is still amazing. Clever, funny and a great tune too. And it's one of the elite controversial hits, for bonus points.
11. "When You Say Nothing At All" Ronan Keating Just to prove I wasn't cheating...

1. "I Shouldve known better" Yo La Tengo Which reminds me of the Inspiral Carpets more than anything else. Never really listened to INAOFAIWKYA beyond the first track, which does indeed "KYA" 2. "One" U2. Ok, its U2. And we've all heard it a million times. Yawn. ( would still kill to have written it though) 3. "midvukudags" Bjork Medulla has a lot of this sorta stuff. Thankfully short. 4. "Music Is My Hot Hot Sex" CSS the rapping in portuguese from 2:02 is one of my very favourite things in the world. great record. 5. "Smokes Quantity" Boards Of Canada Normally I fall asleep to Boards Of Canada on the morning commute from Hull to Leeds. So hearing it in this context is a little strange: Where has the blurry countryside gone??? 6. "Weeping Wall" Bowie Bowie/Eno Second-Side-Of-Low loveliness. Sounds like a diagram from Tomorrow's World. 7. "All of my Tears" Spiritualized I met Jason Pierce once after a Spiritualized gig and he was disappointingly normal but did share his bottle of wine. which was nice. and so is this song. 8. "Sara(Live)" Bob Dylan From The Rolling Thunder Revue - big fan of mid-60's Dylan but didn't really like this album until I found out Mick "Ronno" Ronson was playing . Then it clicked into place: Gypsy-Glam, damn fine. 9. "I Don't Blame You" Cat Power My favourite song from favourite Cat Power album. 10. "Alone Again Or" Love I've been really lucky with this list. To round us off, Love invent mariachi indie, grateful world keeps turning.

1. "I'll Remember" The Chameleons Love this piece, sounds almost instrumental/ambient to me. From a great album too, which kinda makes it seem like filler, based on the other songs on there.
2. "Perfect Time" Ride The BBC sessions version, very ace.
3. "Blow Wind Blow" Tom Waits Not especially familiar with this one, but it has that distinctly '80s Tom Waits sound. A little more hushed, less percussion based than a lot of his '80s songs, so I approve as I've always preferred his Asylum albums.
4. "In Between Days" The Cure The acoustic version from the Greatest Hits bonus CD. Heard it a million times, still great though.
5. "Not Even Jail" Interpol One of the better tracks from the lackluster sophomore album.
6. "Memories Can't Wait" Talking Heads Live version from TNOTBITH, Rhino reissue. Great song.
7. "Moonshot" Galaxie 500 The Peel sessions version. Essential listening.
8. "Breathless" Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds From what I consider the best album of Nick's career, Birthday Party and all, and the best album of 2004. I think this was a single. Perfect song, wouldn't change a thing about it.
9. "John, I'm Only Dancing (Again)" David Bowie From the 1974/1979 compilation. Who hasn't heard this one?
10. "Whore" Low Great song from an excellent album by the most consistent band of the last 10 years. Saw this live on the Great Destroyer tour, loved it before then and even more since.

1. les ondes silencieuses - colleen spare, melancholy atmosphere. kind of sad-toned, mournful
2. money jungle - d.ellington, c.mingus, m.roach dope track. bass line jabbin' at ya. good lead off track, good album throughout
3. marquee moon (alt. version) - television not gonna sit thru this today.
4. rhthm&soul - spoon another solid spoon track. not a highlight. distinct stereo sep. like the previous television track.
5. orakulum - sunn ))) like how this starts w/belligerent, loose-tuned "doom drone" guitars and slowed-down cymbal ring. still prefer actual lawn mower motor drones over these guys. skipping ahead to #6 like it was nothing
6. classid - ace of clubs this album 'benefist' has some sharp acid tunes. like the sinister melody and recognizable delay effect, but not much else in the track
7. eli - caribou hmmm, this sounds nice. soothing and ear-tickling drone. not much dynamic range. maybe a lil' lite
8.belle etoile - s.mathieu & janek schaefer sombre piano playing and rain falling. who could akse for anything more?
9. pheel the phorce - ace of clubs more vibert acid. gonna return to this one. has a crazed, humid feel. weird blue box-y, dirty sqelchiness on the whines
10. i believe - mbv sounds so small and dense compared to the last track. nice txture on the bass. sounds compressed, though each element (voices, whirring guitar, bass) have their own distinctive textures.

1. Mr. Blue Sky - Electric Light Orchestra
(I've been feeling out of sorts all afternoon, and this is precisely what was needed to bring me back into focus. Hugely cheering, and more so given that I'm familiar with its every contour.)
2. Xpedition - Prince & the NPG
(From a 2003 fan-club-only instrumental jazz album, which I have never knowingly heard before. Candy Dulfer on sax, Vanessa Mae on violin, Prince on Rhodes keyboards, apparently. Nearly 8 minutes of tasteful supperclub noodle. Can't see this staying on the iPod for long. Skipping it at the 4 minute mark.)
3. Now. Now. - St. Vincent
(Again, I've never heard this before. Oh, wait, I have - there's a 3 star rating attached to it, which seems a bit miserly as there's loads of interesting stuff going on here. Oh, she's played with Sufjan and the Spree. That makes sense. Christ, it gets intense towards the end. Good stuff, will play again soon.)
4. Teacher Teacher - Anti-Social
(Rough punk rock from John Peel's Record Box, sludgy in the mix but I have a high tolerance for this sort of thing, unexceptional as it is.)
5. Golden Birdies - Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band
(A short 1:37 spoken recital from Clear Spot, with fuzz guitar, vibes and a bit of drum. Doesn't mean much out of context.)
6. Greatest Dancer - Palladium
(From a four track promo sampler, sent to me as I reviewed them live a few weeks ago. Naggingly familiar Ruts/Lizzy/Don't Fear The Reaper-ish riff, which gives way to trebly tinkly post-Feeling/Guilty Pleasures fey tunefulness and "musicianly" "chops". The lazy zing thread must be a matter of days away, but dammit I LIKED them live, even if this doesn't quite hit the mark.)
7. Better Use Your Head - Little Anthony & The Imperials
(From a Northern Soul comp, although this sounds too episodic, tricksy and Bacharach/David-esque - albeit a speeded-up Bacharach/David - to qualify as Northern Soul. Also, not nearly stompy enough. Doesn't matter, it's a belter, a cracker, a thwacker.)
8. The Gift That Keeps Giving - Super Furry Animals
(Fronm Hey Venus!, which I've been too lazy to get round to investigating even though it's been on the iPod for a couple of months. I got a bit bored with the SFAs, and with Gruff Rhys' vocals in particular, not helped by being a bit bored by his live solo performance at this year's Summer Sundae in Leicester. But this is nice enough: pretty and dreamy and summery and vocally layered and not remotely appropriate to the time or the season, but there you go.)
9. Mersey Moon - Sonnenberg
(Off a cover-mounted CD from a few months ago. Don't think I've heard it before. Follows on well from the SFAs track, being initially similar in pace and mood, although it drifts too close to Crowded House territory for my liking. Beatles-y. Geir-friendly. Bit meh.)
10. Ocean Night Song - Laura Veirs
(Gawd, this has all been a bit Word magazine. I have Other Tastes too, you know! Saltbreakers hasn't grabbed me half as much as I hoped it would. Again, a logical progression from the Sonnenberg track, and certainly more to my liking. Comparatively speaking. This hasn't been one of the greatest Shuffles, though. Ah well.)

1. Quickspace - Melo Recently became very into these guys again after having not listened to them for ages. This is a fairly nondescript song, though - quite pretty, and a few good synthy squelches, but otherwise... just mellow.
2. Naughty Women - Fuck Yourself From the 'High Road to Obscurity' compilation album, which only really had a couple of good songs on it. Maybe it's just because I'm tired and ratty, but I'm really enjoying this as a song which is quite simply 'nyahnyahnyahnyah Fuck Yourself nyahnyahnyahnyah Fuck Yourself'.
3. DJ Dangermouse - Justify My Thug What the buggery is this still doing in my mp3 collection? Mildly diverting for a while there, but... meh.
4. Peter Wyngarde - April Now this is more like it. A classy fella. Anyone not know about this record? Allowed full artistic control, Jason King records a bizarre mix of over-sexed and racially dubious pomp.
5. Raymond Scott - Auto-lite: Ford Focus Raymond Scott is a genius. Very short, this one, though... next one already...
6. Fad Gadget - I Discover Love Only downloaded this recently, as I keep being reminded by various threads on here that I don't know much Fad Gadget. This is pretty good, but I don't think it's going to end up on the top of my Mute Records polls any time soon. Much poppier than I thought it'd be.
7. Art Bears - The Slave Love Dagmar's voice. There's just something about these guys - I can never quite put my finger on it. Sense of forboding, political and personal collapse, argh.
8. Go-Betweens - Spring Rain Reminds me of why being a corny indie fuxx0r isn't such a bad thing.
9. Working for a Nuclear Free City - Fallout Hm, another lot of people I was very excited about from descriptions and then dismissed as baggy/madchester revivalists when I actually heard them. This is, however, a pretty nice slab of shoegazing. Might give them another try.
10. Tussle - Blue Beat Not their best track, but gives an adequate picture of what they do. Bass heavy, drums a mix between the calculated motorik and free-primal, hmm, yeah.
― emil.y, Saturday, 29 December 2007 12:08 (eighteen years ago)
Another shuffle. I start with one of the two songs mentioned in emil.y's post I have on my hd - the other being the Danger Mouse*. With a zero to five star rating. Zero stars is utter crap. Five stars means it is for the island.
1 The Go-Betweens - Spring Rain ** One of the Go-Betweens songs I don't appreciate at all. There is something generic about it, where is the tune? I found them boring and unappealing for so long because of these kind of lackluster songs.
2 Elliott Smith - A Passing Feeling ** Not his best song neither. A ballad without interest to me. Like with the G-B an example of a song proving why it took me a while before discovering the intimate genius of Elliott Smith's songwriting.
3 Klaus Schulze - Crystal Lake *** 29 minutes and 15 seconds of a repetitive keyboard theme surrounded by spacy synthesizer lines with some variations later on. There is something addictive about this kind of music. Somehow I can't skip to the next track immediately though I am not completely enchanted by this stuff. Towards the end it turns into new age. Vague & soft, pretty horrible. Skipped at 25 minutes.
4 Sleater-Kinney - Banned from the End of the World *** Interesting juxtaposition. No great song neither. But still a nice change. Those girls rock out and it sounds like them. Sharp and focussed. The perfect antidote to Klaus Schulze.
5 Howe Gelb - This Purple Child **** I love Howe Gelb's masculine baritone, I love nude songs with simple tunes. The desert heat is encapsulated in the dry delivery, the sluggish beat and the skeletal overall execution. That transcendental horn section coming out of nowhere in the middle. It floors me every time I hear it. And it comes twice. I guess those were Grandaddy on visit in Tucson.
6 Rip Rig & Panic - A Dog's Secret *** Instrumental track. I didn't know that there were so jazzy. Mostly a saxophone improvising. Some tribal rhythms near the end. Fine with me.
7 Autechre - Arch Carrier **** Not really ear-pleasing electronic music but somehow I am attracted by it. They are doing their thing, they are exploring the edges of the electronic universe. Which can be very fascinating. I have always been a sucker for new sounds and these are still rather fresh for me. Discovered them only about 5 years ago and don't listen often to their stuff.
8 Olivier Messiaen - Abîme des Oiseaux **? Not sure about this. Rather abstract. Apparently the clarinet = bird singing early in the morning. I don't like music you can only appreciate when you have read about it beforehand.
9 Harold Budd - Arcadia **** This doesn't have the typical cottony Budd piano sound. Slightly dark synthesizer washes in the background. The piano lines grope for something but never reach it. Lovely atmospheric impressionist stuff.
10 The Durutti Column - Shirt No.7 *** Vini Reilly's guitar sound has a special place in my ear. Here it has an almost latin feel. After a while I get bored by it though when there is no real tune like here when Vini seems to be more meandering than melancholic.

it has been said before on this thread but i cannot refrain from repeating it: playlists without any extra info are completely pointless. nobody will read this. why don't you people write a sentence or two about each song? alternatively you could write a computer program that takes the playlist from the ipod or whatever and post it automatically to ilx!

ok!
amsterdam - scott walker: i started listening to scott walker in summer 2006. not sure why; i guess i was curious and found an mp3 of 'the seventh seal' and loved it all. judgement of the moon and stars - joni mitchell: i grew up on joni mitchell, and always really enjoyed this album, for the roses weather storm - massive attack: kinda irritating now, and an album i still fully enjoy. got this in 1999? already gone - stephen duffy: stephen duffy from the lilac time. this album is nice, i always like his songs. grand pianist - montage: wonderful! the guy from the left banke, of course. until the end of the world - julee cruise: from her second album snow don't fall - townes van zandt: enormous - i started listening to him last summer. lovers from the moon - the magnetic fields: still my favourite magnetic fields album; i never listen to 69 love songs or more recent stuff. impossibilium - the tragically hip: one of my very favourite tragically hip songs, from day for night bring me the disco king - david bowie: one of the nice songs off of his reality album.
i enjoy browsing through to see how many of the playlists match my library, to see how 'in tune' i am.

lets see what the wonder of itunes brings me today 1. The Emotions - Heart Association impossibly high helium vocals, some agile guitar. actually i know nothing about this record but it sounds good. 2. Palace - Old Jerusalem possible the polar opposite to The Emotions, some lovely lines "we mingle our limbs" etc 3. Herman Dune - with a tankful of gas A song about "such a nice drive with the velvet underground". Which sounds just like going for a nice drive with the VU playing. onomatopeia-pop or something. 4. Mogwai - Christmas steps. I'll go to the corner shop while this is playing. back in 10 minutes. 5. Madvillain - Figaro from the Madvillainy album. 6. Otis Redding - These arms of mine which'd be a nothing song in anyone elses hands, but Otis elevates it by sounding so damn desperate 7. Jarvis Cocker - disney time mmm lots of people really liked JC's solo album but I thought it was pretty mediocre. this is typical. 8. M83 - In Church From the sublime Dead Cities Red Seas etc album. Beautiful shoegaze electronica that's been subject of more than a few internet hipster crushes but still pretty wonderful. 9. Luomo - Make Believe From Paper Tigers, which I haven't listened to yet. But love Vocalcity and this is good once it finds its rhythm around the 3 minute mark. 10. Nirvana - Where did you sleep last night. Haven't heard this for years.
mixed bunch really...

Boards of Canada - Open The Light
What I like about this is that it has all of the carefree characteristics of their mid ninties material before they started laying on the Paganism thing a bit thick for the following album.
Burial - Dog Shelter
...From Untrue, which I was a bit dissapointed with to be honest. Still a good album, just found it a little slick in comparison to the broken future-dub of the debut. When is Stairwell coming out? Anyone?
Underworld - Second Hand
I think the only thing this has ever come out on was a Cafe Del Mar comp. This is one of the best things they've ever done IMO. It's up there with "Rez".
B12 - DB5
I think B12 were incredibly underrated and they often get forgotten about when Warp is discussed. Think they were just as instrumental in defining Warp's early sound as much as LFO, Aphex etc were. "Time Tourist" and the A.I. comps have that nice cocoon type feel that was the golden age of the label before they started signing crappy indie bands.
Four Tet - Parks
Like this, but there's another track he did with sampled coustic guitars that almost sounded like a UK garage tune. It was wicked but can't remember what it was called...
David Bowie - Warszawa
Funny, when you look at the photos from Berlin they looked like they were having a right laugh...
Aphex Twin - 5
From SAW II. Makes me think of Dartmoor which is the best place to listen this album. fantastic track but doesn't surpass "Blue Calx". I'd cut my arm off to make something as beautiful as that.
Verve - She's a Superstar
Their first four singles and b-sides combined make a great album. Curious to hear the new stuff but curious is all.
Horace Andy - Fever
From "In The Light". Not the best example of his solo stuff but still worth a listen. Bought this from Boomkat when I read that Blood & Fire was about to shut.
Lush - Sunbathing
Lent "Spooky" to a mate of mine who was not familiar with their work. He said they sounded like The Cocteau Twins with a carrot up their arse. I beg to differ though, not all what they did was great but this and a handful of other tracks were. This showcases a tentative side I think.

ok 220gb into player..shuffle..and:
1. palace brothers: more brother rides from viva last blues while some are better than others, the w oldham cannon is pretty ok always...a safe hit in shuffle (though i do have some live stuff badly recorded)
2. lou harrison: track 10 from gamelan music a quieter moment...shuffle is kind of brillian when the random bits of classical works come up. im only really used to listening to this as a whole...this part is lovely
3. john cale: the second fortress from sun blindness music a sparking drone...not right now, thanks
4.will oldham: (end of) travelling from lost blues and other songs whenever i shuffle, the damned thing always loves w.oldham. i not rescind my earlier statement (though if i wasnt doing this for the sake of this thread, i might let it play happily). at the end of the day, sure i have a lot of this...but theres way more the fall, dylan, and sonic youth...but the shuffling goes in for w. oldham
5.crass: sheepfarming in the falklands from best before 1984 heres the danger, right...its one ting to pick crass, its another thing when it slips in when youve just had l harrison and w oldham...a touch jarring. confirming that i listen to crass more than enough.
6. ray charles: ray's blues (single version)frm blues and jazz im fairly sure ray charles is always ok. granted, ive been careful with what ray ive bothered to add to the archive. some of the real gloopy/glossy stuff with the singers and all can fall short. but the smaller band, blues/r'n'b stuff is always ok
7. brothers of the occult sisterhood: i would rather live on the sun from animal speak the free musics can be a trouble in the shuffle. just out of the blue, they can be rather jarring or sound too loose and unhinged. when i want this record, im rather fond of it, but out of nowhere, it can be hard to really enter into
8.josef k: its kinda funny from the only fun in town--sorry for laughing i still havent spent too much time with josef k. i ist came to know of them via the creation records book, but didnt pick up anything untill years later and my interest has waned. that said, this is a good track with guitars that seem to bend off in sheets of aluminum or mylar. sonicly interesting, but sort of flat all in all as i listen more critically at this moment
9. anaal nathrakh: the technigoat from the codex necro eeep...black metal. what i enjoy about this record is the way the drums are mixed low and dirty. most stuff along these lines looses me with the damned doublekick/triggered drums. to me it just distracts from the textures of the other instrumentation. its a rare time and place that i reach for a black metal record (though spent some time dipping my toes in these dark waters last summer and picked up a handful of very random records), but of what i have i do like this one quite a lot...more heavy psych in flavor than classic black thrash and riff
10. boredoms: spiral from vision creation newson yeah, well..fine...though when some soul discharge shit comes up,it often gets quickly skipped (same as crass, when i choose it, ok..but in the midst of cale, oldham, etc)..but after the metal..even that would seem to slip easily into place

1. Jazz master - Kruder & Dorfmeister Remix of someone else's tune, can't remember who. Woman singing wordlessly, long spacey bongo bit, occasional comedy organ solos. Bit coffe table but I like it. I'm allowed to, I'm nearly thirty.
2. Day For Night - Moloko Off their first album, barely listened to it. Quite nice and sultry and nocturnal.
3. Nasal Retentive Calliope Music - Mothers of Invention From We're Only in it For the Money. Lots of clanging with a random bit of surf guitar at the end. Bloke saying "Beautiful, it's God, I see God" who I seem to remember might be Eric Clapton. Works well in the context of the album, doesn't at all as a standalone.
4. The Wretched - Nine Inch Nails Faily rote track from The Fragile.
5. The Way It Is - The Prodigy This is from their fourth album, the one I never ever listen to. Huh, it samples Thriller extensively. Well done Liam, really pushing the boundaries with your cultural touchstones there.
6. Geno - Dexy's Midnight Runners Amazing song, but you all knew that. The horn stabs punctuating the double-time chorus are so cheeky and smiley.
7.Ten Years Gone - Led Zepplin Awesomely atmospheric beginning and end. Dull and noodly middle section. This is my problem with a lot of Zep's stuff.
8. Rain - Bruce Ruffin 70s (?) reggae track with a noirish, spy thriller edge to it. Nice.
9. Stripsearch - Faith No More One of their better later tracks, goes from slinky and soulful to menacing and growly, then throws in some totally uneccessary but pretty cool metal guitars at the end just for good measure.
10. Smoke & Mirrors - RJD2 Takes AGES to kick in, but when it does you've got some muffled blues guy singing over a rolling hip-hop beat and redneck slide guitars and it's pretty damn good.

i ran some erends and left the thing going..so, a randm ten
1casa casa atougra mahmoud ghania w/ p sanders the trance of 7 colors hmmm, better than i remember this being. though, kinda generic "ceremony of..." field recording sort of vibe.
2.sir richard bishop: saraswati from polytheistic fragments peoplehave given him a hard time abut this record for being so all over the place, a bit show-offy, and a bit thin (as far as really pushing the material), but i'm a sucker and i don't look to each of his releases to be goddamnded steely dan. this is a piano and drone number. and im not so well practiced in this language to say much. its neither great nor awful. pretty, a bit haunting...almost sweet. his attack is quite nice and implies a strange hesitated fluidity.
3.nick drake: thoughts of mary jane from 5 leaves left its raining and this is just about perfect as augmented by the sounds from the open windows
4.muppet chickens baby face from the 2nd muppet show album chickens. singing. yep.
5.loren mazzacane connors: o'connaria's air from the recent as roses bow collection
ive seen the man play a number of times, but only ever had one record (and some stuff he shows up on). this is a shorter piece and characteristically slow and languid..blues of the air
8.chris lucey: with pity, but its too late from songs of protest and anti protest the record is a bit of a mystery (unclear origins and credits), but great west-coast folk. this is a sort of silly am radio loper.
9. the clash: 4horsemen from london calling ripped this recently as it had been a while i needed some song for a dj gig...
10. jennifer gentle: the garden part 1 from valende harps crashes, nylon guitar with one of the boys singing quite into the upper reaches. lovely track froma great album..
now back to work

ok, this is mildly amusing and im playing a lot of shuffle to work on a new project
t-z (including v.a.) on shuffle
1. woodenwand and the vanishing voice: genisis joplin from gypsy freedom sometimes jessica's voice sounds too forced on this track...othertimes it sounds like a warbled, marbled new english pagan take on aec
2. rolling stones: something happened from between the buttons (reissue) im a sucker for this silly little number...or maybe just for silly drugged marching jazz band romps (like kaleidascope's one that begins "if the river was whiskey and i was a dog...")...but still dont really see why it was tacked on..savve that its amusing
3.fursaxa: tura tura and the light of the new crescent moon from the invisible pyramid: elegy box i was lazy in tagging this when i ripped (though i was hoping dumping it all into my ipod would allow me to finally penetrate its massiveness)...tara has a loose and very "in the zone" composition here. just voice and harmonium then sliding into a chimes and flutes bit of myst....lovely little spell. i bought this box with winnings from the breeders cup frm the miminatoko guys at a show organized by a former ilxer
4. the band: don't do it from a live at roosevelt stadium august 73 bootleg this set has the band in absolutely ripping form...amazing version of "stage fright". this number is a bit ho-hum to my ears, but thats the band in general for me. i like the hits and occasional others, but in general a bit too 70's rock. listening now, robertson pulls a tight-jawed little squeal of a solo, and the vocals are brilliantly laid back and fried-wired at the same time...but it drags on for too damned long
5.the replacements: "radio free europe" from some bootleg of weird live covers they knew how to have fun with it all. and im guessing westerberg also secretly coveted some of rem's best ones....drunk sloppy garage band here: but that exactly why the teenage me fell in love with the band. under all the mess, real gems lingered...we hoped to find the same gems in us...or atleast break through the boredom
6. neil young: new mamma from tonights the night jesus...perfect little ball of harmony, sadness, and hope from uncle neil..right into you
7 unkown: canned heat from folk music from obscuration (wfmu dj premium...jeffery davidson's..from...2006? no 2005) christ, again lazily tagged. a nice westcoast folk go at a deltaish composition. nice enough, but somewhat tame and or generic...actually..its hooking me as it plays, but i cant say why
8. versus: seaweed rising from lets electrify hmmm, never quite noticed the husker du influence on the begining of this. probably not quite there. i dont think ive heard this since 1998. a good argument for shuffle and riping records you never listen to anymore. nothing wrong with this, but not such a thrill either...nice little squalscrum at the end
9.the sharakan early music ensemble: ter herknits from music from armenia vol 2 tremeloed strum and drone. great little number and a great record!
10. the band: the weight from big pink see what i get for saying that about the band..shuffle has a higher consciousness
and since there was a repeat:
11.the beatles: here there and everywhere from revolver (uk stereo) i use the title phrase quite regularly. nothing else worth saying. its been said
ok..head now working so off to work

10 tunes courtesy of itunes dj (when did it change from party shuffle?)
my dying bride - the sexuality of bereavement
what a downer of a track to start with. it's a song from the 'turn loose the swans' era that never made the cut for that particular album, and thankfully so as it would have been the weakest track by some margin. it's MDB-by numbers - a bit too meandering and grim for the sake of being grim. but the liberal use of violin (which was a defining element of MDB's sound during this era) is a welcome touch.
guided by voices - surgical focus
this is a terrific song in the right context, but it's probably not what i felt like being served up just now (too playful and tuneful as a follow-up to MDB?). i'm still buzzing to the vocal delivery as always, and love how RP glides from verse to bridge to chorus in one lofty fell swoop, like the shifts in the song are passages for one long, extended thought.
the police - driven to tears
it's a slick, poised and well-paced song that i always enjoy hearing. the refrain is catchy in spite of itself and the vocals benefit from being understated and low-key. not sure if i'm sold on the guitar solo, which sounds vaguely tacked-on.
alice in chains - put you down
one of the more lightweight numbers from 'facelift'. it's plenty catchy and AIC would probably never be this energetic again, but it does feel like it's the product of a band pandering to convention by churning out the requisite "fast, upbeat song" rather than being wholly focused on homogenising its unique strengths across an entire album. these issues would be rectified on 'dirt', which is totally uncompromising and more consistently representative of a band that had well and truly found its calling.
wilco - hotel arizona
this is my favourite song from 'being there'. it's a perfectly balanced fusion of the introspective moodiness of the album's quieter numbers and the more spirited, angular drive of the louder rock-focused ones. really like how the song closes too.
darkthrone - en as i dype skogen
about as primal and unalloyed as musical expression, of any kind, can get. when i'm truly feeling the mood of a song like this, i don't want to be distracted from it.
tears for fears - everybody wants to rule the world
this song is quite tastefully put together and avoids the laboured schmaltz you get on songs like 'shout' (which would have been decent if the chorus wasn't repeated a billion times over). it works by virtue of its subtlety - never lapsing into overt-preachiness, offering something elegant and restrained for the casual listener, while dog-whistling a deeper, more elaborate message to those consciously seeking poignancy.
tim buckley - the healing festival
ok, here we have a song that i never want to hear if i'm not in the mood for it. when i'm feeling it, it's phenomenal. right now i'm tempted to skip.
gang of four - glass
this song jumps around a lot, taunting the listener with urgent semi-grooves before venturing off on sharp detours, chopping things up dramatically. i think i might have overlooked this tune a bit in the past and will pay more attention to it in the future.
depeche mode - behind the wheel
used to find it unnerving, but these days i can't get past the stiffly layered synths and mock-spookiness of it all. i think the song's about drugs and stems from personal experience, but it all sounds surprisingly distant and third-person.

This one sounds much better on the 7 inch remix IMO.
