Duran Duran: What the hell are they on about?

Were Duran Duran's songs meant to make sense in any way? I'm being wholly serious here; I mean, have you people listened to "Hungry Like the Wolf"? "The Reflex"? What in god's green pastures are they babbling on and on about? I guess "Ordinary World" makes sense but it's crap, so what's the point?

I mean, "Electric Barbarella"???!

Ally, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

New answers with a question mark.

Mark, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Why thank you. I don't believe in doing that myself, I want people to do work to read my shit!

Ally, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This is an important question and one I have absolutely no answer to. The songs really don't sound as if they were put together in a just- whatever-rhymes sense, there's clearly some bizarre animating intelligence at work. "The Reflex" in particular is complete gibberish which sounds scarily like it took quite a lot of thought.

Tom, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh yeah, because "Motorcyle Emptiness" makes *SO* much sense.

Hahahaha....

alex in nyc, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It does make a fair bit of sense actually. So do a lot - well, a few - Duran Duran songs. There is an incredible gulf of sense between any Manics song and "The Reflex" and frankly the Manics are the worse off for that.

Tom, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Making sense out of their lyrics is about as easy as a nuclear war.

Andy, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

They're a bit like Suede's, aren't they? They even have nuclear references.

Nick, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have absolutely no bloody idea what the hell The Reflex is about, but isn't Hungry Like The Wolf just Mr Le Bon saying he needs a shag real bad and he's coming after you to get one? With some of them fancy metaphors and the like?

RickyT, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Fuck making sense - they're CUTE! Especially that Warren Cuccillullio (or whatever his name is). Ooo, baby, if I were a groupie, and I liked being crapped on, I'd be on them like plastic wrap on plastic wrap. A would-be Zappa stooping to play new-wave has got to be classic on some level.

And since when are people listening to the lyrics in Duran Duran songs? It's all about blah blah blah blah HER NAME IS RIO, AND SHE DANCES ON THE SAND ... hmm hmm ... blah blah blah blah THROUGH THE DUSTY LANDS ... That's the reason folks don't like _Thank You_ - who wants to hear these beautiful goofs sing Dylan or Public Enemy, when they have the lyrical stylings of Simon Le Bon-bon going to waste?

To quote the LeBon - everything after _Seven and the Ragged Tiger_ is all just so much post-Chili Peppers music.

So what the hell am I talking about again?

David Raposa, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Fuck me backwards I'd forgotten they'd called an album SEVEN AND THE RAGGED TIGER!

Tom, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Um, what Tom said, Alex - Motorcycle Emptiness seems pretty well straight forward, lots of whinging about how dull and empty the place they live is and how empty life in general is, blah blah blah. I mean, fine, you wanna talk Manics talk Manics but at least pick a fair contender in the "Make Less Sense Than 'The Reflex'" sweepstakes, like Revol or something.

Actually, that's a bloody good question: What were the writers of those two songs thinking when they wrote those?

I think Hungry Like The Wolf is about oral sex but everyone just ignores me. Really, though, if you actually listen to what he's saying, it makes virtually no sense, I mean the metaphors are awful. They have loads and loads of singles that sound like unadulterated gibberish, but VERY COMPLEX gibberish, like Tom said.

It's not a situation like Britney Spears or something where something doesn't make sense, but it's just cos they're being a bit lazy and it's not about what she's actually saying anyhow. I feel like I SHOULD be paying loads of attention to what they are saying, cos it's done up so importantly, but it makes fuck all sense.

Seven and the Ragged Tiger, hahahahahahahahaha. Sorry.

Ally, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

In "Hungry Like the Wolf" do they sing "I smell like I sound"? That's what I always hear anyway and it seems like a truthful lyric to me.

fritz, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I do believe that's what they say. I never actually bothered to look, it sounds like they're going either "Your juice is like wine" or "The truth is like wine" in the chorus, too, one of which is completely dodgy and the other is completely nonsense. But yeah, I think he's going "I smell like I sound, I'm lost and I'm found, and I'm hungry like the wolf".

Perhaps the reason why the lyrics make no sense is cos I can't understand him.

Ally, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Even Revol at least has names of actual real people in and you think there might be some point being made maybe. Whereas "The Reflex" is on one level crystal clear - it is about a powerful cosmic force, the Reflex, which is a lonely child in charge of finding treasure in the dark. The problem comes from the fact that this is the sort of thing which even Syd Barrett or the Incredible String Band would have stepped slowly backwards from making calming noises.

Tom, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

In the early eighties, there was a Woolwaorths ad which had a rinky dinky little rhyme about the stuff you could buy your loved ones for Xmas. The musical work referred to was "Seven and the Ragged Tiger... Duran Duran".

What I really remember from the ad was a very normal-looking girl of about my age at the time (13? 14?) looking through the record racks and pulling out a copy of "Raw Power", then enthusiastically showing it to her (equally square-looking) sister. This little corner of advertising history still confuses me.

Tim, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

so if duran duran *admit* in song that they smell like they sound, what do they smell like? (other than SOLID GOLD HITS, BABY!!!)

fritz, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Seven WHAT??

Tom, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Seven and the Ragged Tiger -- wasn't that something about the five Durans, their two fearless managers, and.... uhm, some tiger-type object? I forget what the tiger stood for. Grace Jones? Andy Taylor's hair?

Andy, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Moderately helpful explanation

Nick, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

From the same website:

"Kyrie", Mr. Mister
Greek for Lord Have Mercy

Oh, the irony!

Nick, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

They smell confusing.

Ally, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Even funnier:

"Sussudio", Phil Collins
Actually, I heard Phil in an interview say that the title came from a guy who worked at the recording studio who had a stutter or speech impediment, so he couldn't say the word studio correctly...it came out sussudio.

What a card!

Nick, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Flex flex flex flex flex.

David Raposa, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My God! What is this horror?

Nick, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Why was the Reflex Duran Duran's biggest hit when of their hit singles it is by far the spankiest?

"Rio", album of the '80s?

DV, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Spankiest? What?

Ally, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It is 'Mouth is alive with juices like wine' and 'I smell like I sound' according to the lyrics printed in the CD booklet. So, I think that's a yes on oral sex but god knows what the sound/smell thing is about.

RickyT, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Smells = like raunchy sex.

Sounds = like raunchy sex.

Nitsuh, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

He smells like whine?

Dave225, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

when I was a kid listening to the radio in the early 80's, I loved that Mr. Mister song. I thought the lyrics were "Carry a laser down the road that I must travel ... "

Chris, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'I smell like I sound'

Assuming Simon's referring to crotch spelunking, mayhaps he's referring to the fact that his mouth -- like, where his 'sound' comes from, and stuff -- has a particular scent to it. But who knows? He's an enigma.

Andy, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think he's talking about endangered species. We (the predators, wiping out these defenseless animals) are stained with the scent of their blood, because of humanity's ravenous appetite for destruction. Hence, we are the Wolf, and we're famished. Yum yum, dodos.

Next up - an environmental interpretation of "Welcome to the Jungle".

David Raposa, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

So who wants to explain the VIDEOS?

Ally, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The videos made perfect sense. For example, "Girls on Film" was about girls on film, therefore the ironic twist was putting girls in the video. The video for "Rio" was about how Duran Duran owned a boat and enjoyed sailing purposefully to scenic locations in order to have sexual encounters with their indigenous people. The video for "Hungry like the Wolf" expands on this by explaining why, arguing that non-Western peoples are animalistic jungle creatures and therefore prime candidates for Le Bon's special brand of animalistic raunch-sex.

Nitsuh, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Anyone want to tackle "Wild Boys"? Personally, I can't see how the director of this (presumably) fine upstanding video could have gone on to helm such cinematic crap as the Highlander flicks AND _The Shadow_.

David Raposa, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Wild Boys" was allegedly lyrically and visually based on the Burroughs novel of the same name. Haven't read it, so can't weigh in on its veracity.

By the same token, looking for lyrical depth and meaning in Duran Duran lyrics is an excercise in needlessness. They never claimed to be Leonard Cohen.

Alex in NYC, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Why would anyone want to dissect the work of Leonard Cohen? He's boring.

Ally, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, as a serious note, this seemed to be a chronic problem with both lyrics and videos of that period (and several other periods as well) -- someone would just free-associate on an item of supposed literary merit, on the assumption that his ill-informed, poorly- conceived mental references would somehow turn out to be high art. The results always played out like something that stoned-out-of-their- gourds 15-year-olds would cook up: "Yeah, and like, so, the white horse symbolizes death, and so when the white horse looks at itself in the big mirror, then the big mirror shatters and a tear runs down the singer's cheek. And then there'll be a part where champagne runs down a cup, to symbolize how, like, we still find joy in the face of, like, death. And stuff."

Nitsuh, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That's not my point. And I agree,....he is dead boring, but then again, so is Bob Dylan.

Alex in NYC, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dude, that's exactly what videos were like in the '80s. None of them made any sense. My favorite is the Safety Dance - what the hell is going on in that one?

Ally, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

None of Burroughs' novels make any sense to me at all (I have tried reading Wild Boys) so perhaps the influence is stylistic and universal.

Kris, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I wouldn't have liked Leonard Cohen at 21 either; now that I'm an old man, I like being bored.

Sean, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the Safety Dance video was a parable about art, in that the main Man without Hat guy is like some sort of giant from the hillside who comes into the dwarf village and introduces the joy of the Safety Dance into the villager's otherwise mundane and depressing lives. So there's that, and also the subtext of the isolation of the artist as "outcast" or "freak," who can never really be one with the culture of the dwarf village, only serve as its entertaining Other. It's really very complex.

Unless I'm misremembering ... that was the one with the dwarves, right?

Nitsuh, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nitsuh, you are insane. Ergo I am going to tie you down and FORCE you to contribute articles to FT, you wonderful man.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You'll hunt him down like saucy Simon Le Bon did with the jungle chick in Hungry Like the Wolf.

I don't even make sense right now because of my shoulder medication, or I would outline the number of ways that Duran Duran are the greatest band ever.

Nicole, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You'll hunt him down like saucy Simon Le Bon did with the jungle chick in Hungry Like the Wolf.

That's *exactly* my plan.

I don't even make sense right now because of my shoulder medication, or I would outline the number of ways that Duran Duran are the greatest band ever.

What needs outlining? Is it not a GIVEN FACT?

They seriously were one of the most crucial bands I ever heard. From them into the synth-New Ro hits of the day, then into the Pet Shop Boys, Depeche and New Order, and after that the world = Ned's musical path in partial nutshell (the other was determined by Def Leppard and love of loud guitars).

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, and don't forget the absurd Kafkaesque video for "Owner of a Lonely Heart."

I hated Duran Duran. "Come Undone" was OK though.

sundar subramanian, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You people are some fucked up weirdos, that's all I have to say. I just like to think that the guy without a hat has pet dwarves, that's all. So don't ruin it for me.

PS Leonard Cohen sucks at 21 or 81.

Ally, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, I'll freely 'fess to being a hardcore Duran fan until Arena or so. If I only had a photograph of what my bedroom walls looked like back then. For several months, possibly a year, they were the only thing that mattered.

There. I feel better now.

Andy, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm told 'Union of the Snake' is about kundalini. Fire crawling up the spine etc., something to do with tantric sex.

dave q, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Isn't this thread about as illuminating as commenting on, say, David Beckham's public utterances, merely whiffing of nostalgia for the disgusting eighties, music's worst period ever. Whatever Duran Duran's talents were (shagging models, I guess), they sure weren't verbal. Or musical. Or vocal. Or visual. Simon Le Bon told a good joke about boy bands in an interview last year though.

Snotty Moore, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No.

mark s, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the really GRATE thing about 80s videos isn't the bizarre meaningless arty ones, but the over-literal ones.

Alan Trewartha, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I love people that get all uppity about something like Duran Duran.

Ally, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

but the over-literal ones.

*tremulous pause*

"HELLO? Is it ME you're *looking* for?"

Ned Raggett, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Is that covers album really as awful as everyone says it is? I've never heard it. Is it at least funny? Does anyone have anything nice to say about it?

Arthur, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Remember the music video in Ken Russell's 'Crimes of Passion'? The silverware floating in the air?

dave q, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That was the most fun ILM's been for ages. Good one Ally.

Tom, Sunday, 4 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm trying to think of fun topics for all, I am here to serve, plus I decided I like ILM best so I thought to contribute.

You know, no one tackled the important issue of the "Electric Barbarella" video. Am I the only one who's seen it? It was banned by MTV for being "too sexist", amusingly - it featured the boys with a blonde girl dressed up like Barbie, and they posed her for their amusement.

Oh, the covers album? Their cover of "White Lines" is brilliant. Brilliant meaning something wholly different from good. Though I kind of did like their version of "Thank You", at least better than the Led Zep version.

Ally, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ten months pass...
duran durnan's Reflex is about drug addition.

likely turning to drugs to ease the pain of loneliness from not finding love.

Read the lyrics carefully with this in mind.

"Kyrie", Mr. Mister
Greek for Lord Have Mercy

Oh, the irony!

Yeah, I read that "Kyrie Eleison" means "Lord Have Mercy" in ancient Greek...ever since then I've been obsessed with getting James Brown to record my Hard Funk anthem, "Kyrie Eleison, Y'all!"

By the same token, looking for lyrical depth and meaning in Duran Duran lyrics is an excercise in needlessness.

Welcome to the internet!

"the reflex" isn't about anything, simon just sang whatever came into his head. and you fell for it, world! #1 all over the place! best band ever.

dee dee square, Wednesday, 30 October 2002 03:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey guys, this is from China. Duran Duran just jumped into my mind from nowhere when I sat in the bar along with friends. I was born on 1977 in Mainland China and there should have had no circumstances under which I could know this band...but weird enough, Duran Duran just left a stamp somewhere in my brain furry ...maybe some radio broadcast leftover...The pronounciation of "Duran Duran" sounds beauful to me... can anyone explain what is the meaning or what is the notion behind "Duran Duran"? positive or negative in your culture ? Thanks a lot.

eutopia, Friday, 1 November 2002 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Duran Duran was originally the name of a mad scientist intent on conquering the universe in the file Barbarella.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 1 November 2002 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

*a helpful translator appears*

he means the *film* 'barbarella'.:)

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 1 November 2002 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey thanks guys for your explanation... I think I knew that it is from a movie "Barbarella" starred by Jane Fonda... so Duran Duran = the freak Freinkenstan , which is some evil notion in your concept ? Or do you guys have any other positive intepretation for Duran Duran ? or in other words, does the band bring any sparkling notion for the name ? Will it be some taboo to the mass public just the same as "Modonna" = "Sexual Indecency ( of course this is not any more nowdays in China" ) to elderly Chinese? Bow again

eutopia, Friday, 1 November 2002 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

duran durnan's Reflex is about drug addition.

I'll be damned, but that actually makes sense.

Anyhow, yes, Duran Duran is the freak Freinkenstan, which is definitely an evil notion in my concept, but there is also a sparkling notion, which is why they are great. That also sounds like the lyrics to their next song.

I'm loaded on cold meds right now, sorry.

Simon LeBon looks like my exboyfriend, minus the facial hair, in the View To A Kill video. It's freaky.

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 2 November 2002 03:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Hi Ally, is this the charming egoistic warm-hearted Ally Macbeal ? kidding... thanks for your opinion anyway... can you be more specific about the notion of Duran Duran to you personally ? is it cold, metal-like, hard to accept, weird ? Can it be related to anything positive like beauty, elegance, luxury, fashion etc...? just trying to understand the way you people insight things

eutopia, Saturday, 2 November 2002 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Please read this abstract. It is a great analysis of the meaning of the songs "Girls on Film, The Chauffeur, and Hungry Like the Wolf." Seriously, it is enlightening...it talks about the themes of sexuality and violence and of lesbianism and racism that are contained in those videos and Duran Duran's overall perspective of how women are tamed and controlled, Duran Duran and MTV. It's a very enlightening piece of work entitled "I am the Eye, You are Victim" which was a quote by Duran Duran. Check it out here: http://www.martnet.com/~bflysmle/kj/thesis.html

REVIVE. Planet Earth is still the best song ever. Discuss.

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 5 April 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

How can any of you talk about Duran Duran without even mentioning the brilliant work of art that is the album "Medazzaland"?

No, I'm not being sarcastic.

Yes, I am a fan.

Yes, I do know what the title "Seven & the Ragged Tiger" is about.

No, I'm not going to explain right now -- I don't feel like it.

Dee the Lurker (Dee the Lurker), Saturday, 5 April 2003 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

"Planet Earth" is definitely the best Duran Duran song ever. I rented the video comp "Decade" a while back and realized only three songs ("P.E.," "Hungry Like The Wolf" and "Rio") weren't completely EXCRUCIATING (though "Ordinary World" and "Come Undone" weren't bad fake George Michael songs - particularly the latter). Possibly one of the worst bands ever.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 5 April 2003 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

How can a human being ENDURE "A View To A Kill" or "The Wild Boys" without the fascinating videos?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 5 April 2003 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

How can any of you talk about Duran Duran without even mentioning the brilliant work of art that is the album "Medazzaland"?

I did bring up Medazzaland, several times! Electric Barbarella was the lead single off of Medazzaland! It is a good album though. Even the Oasisy bits.

Anthony, you are insane.

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 5 April 2003 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally is most correct re: Anthony's insanity. I only ever heard "The Wild Boys" and "A View to a Kill" when they were hits without any video context at all (no MTV at the time for me, see).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 5 April 2003 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Like Yes, Duran Duran never wrote lyrics that made sense. But they still had a lot of great songs because of their melodies.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 5 April 2003 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Like Yes, Duran Duran never wrote lyrics that made sense.

This is a beautiful sentence. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 5 April 2003 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Duran Duran never wrote lyrics that made sense.

Never say never, bud.

"Ordinary World" and "Come Undone" make sense.....sorta.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 5 April 2003 18:36 (twenty-two years ago)

No, they definitely make sense. So does Girls on Film, when it comes down to it. The Reflex, on the other hand...

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 5 April 2003 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

But but but Simon is very clear about how he sold the Renoir and the TV set because he doesn't want to be around when this gets out!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 5 April 2003 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

When what gets out? The disturbing fact that he's using children to find treasure in the dark? I'd run too.

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 5 April 2003 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Mm, child labor.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 5 April 2003 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok, does anyone else agree that Girls On Film sucks?! Come on, they had to throw naked women across the screen to get people to give a shit.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 5 April 2003 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

except Ned, from whom New Wave = crack.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 5 April 2003 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

It's really just you, Anthony.

"Duran Duran" yes was the name of the space villain in Barbarella but the amazing truth is --

the script writer named the space villain Duran Duran after an old Latin jazz record heavy on the mambo by the two Duran brothers.

(duran, duran -- it might not really be amazing but it's true)

bflaska, Sunday, 6 April 2003 06:17 (twenty-two years ago)

(Best parts of Rio = not the singles)

This is where I point out the greatness of "Hold Back The Rain" which is one of my favorite songs, period - especially if you can find the vastly superior originaly US vinyl mix which cranks up the keyboard sequencing and the guitar feedback.

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Sunday, 6 April 2003 06:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I like "Hungry Like The Wolf", but other than that one, I agree the non-singles are better. "The Chauffeur" remains my all-time favourite by Duran Duran, but "Lonely In Your Nightmare", "Last Chance On The Stairway", "New Religion" and "Hold Back The Rain" are really great songs too.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 6 April 2003 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

What Chris Barrus said, several goddamn times over. An absolutely brilliant song and the US vinyl mix is THE mix to have.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 6 April 2003 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Was that a B-Side or something? The only version of "Hold Back the Rain" I know of is the one on Rio.

Evan (Evan), Sunday, 6 April 2003 17:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's the selling of the Renoir and the TV set itself that Simon doesn't want to get out.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Sunday, 6 April 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
"the reflex" makes sense to me now, 'cause i just had to sell the Renoir and the TV set because i don't want to be around when this gets out!

I know people say "best thread ever" a lot, maybe too much, but this thread is just great! It's going along really hilariously and then eutopia comes in at the end of the second act and just wow.

s1utsky (slutsky), Thursday, 5 June 2003 02:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, someone please explain "Planet Earth" to me. I could look up the lyrics but I like how I never seem to hear them properly.

That's interesting. I always thought that the line was:

Some New Romantics looking
For the TV sound

And I always thought that that was prescient, like they were aware of the importance of video to promote their music.

That's interesting. I always thought that the line was:

Some New Romantics looking
For the TV sound

And I always thought that that was prescient, like they were aware of the importance of video to promote their music.

The line goes, "Like some new romantic looking for the TV sound", but the "new romantic" bit was just thrown in there, really. They certainly didn't intend on being a part of the "New Romantic" scene, but they were thrown in there because they happened to be a band of males who wore makeup and were known for their fashion sense, even during those days when they were traveling the U.K. in a van, which they lived in because the band's total daily stipend at the time was limited to £100. (This happened during their stint as the opening act for Hazel O'Connor.)

Anyway, I think most of what Simon wrote (we're talking lyrics here) during those early days (i.e., the debut album and the Rio period) was either a tribute to unrequited love, a chronicle of what success did to the band, or a general summation of internal feelings that, if overanalyzed, loses its impact. *

Oh, and fans of melody in music would be tickled pink to read this quote from Nick Rhodes, as it's found in their "official lyric book":

We've got really strong melody lines. I think that's something that Disco's lacking. In general, melodies have been missing over the past couple of years.

*: Just in case you're wondering, examples go as follows:

unrequited love: "Last Chance on the Stairway" (about a missed opportunity with an attractive female)
chronicle of success: "Sound of Thunder" (about how dizzying success can be, poss. inspired by the band's finally getting a record contract)
general summation of feelings: "Rio" (inspired by the band's first trip to the U.S., as Blondie's support act)

*sighs happily* I love when I can do these kinds of posts.

Dee the Lurker (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 5 June 2003 04:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Good timing, the singles box set comes out in the US next week. For some insanely stupid reason they neglected to put the videos on the CDs... 13 CDs with 3-4 songs each, and you couldn't stick some videos on there? Sheesh.

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 5 June 2003 06:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Listening to Duran Duran for the lyrics is like reading Playboy for the articles. It's missing the point.

And yes, I am a massive Duran fan, as you know. ;-)

kate, Thursday, 5 June 2003 08:09 (twenty-one years ago)

To return to 'Electric Barberella', is this not a straightforward tale of man & mannequin as canonised in such songs as 'Livin' Doll' & in the unforgettable classic, erm, 'Mannequin'...

And the Barbarella bit being a cutesie reference to where they got their name form of course.

As a premise for a song it's pretty disgusting but it's got such a damn catchy hook, and I forgave Duran Duran for being sexist a VERY long time ago, 'cause let's face it, they were the prettiest band wot ever penned their own choons.

(Were Duran Duran the prettiest band wot ever penned their own choons? Discuss)

Don't know if anyone still lurks around here... but, I just got Duran's "Greatest" on dvd...

Dee to thread!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 22:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Hah!

I can't believe my earlier inputs to the thread. Obviously I needed some practice with actually and truly reading through what was once posted and not just going off on tangents.

The "ragged tiger" in the album title Seven & The Ragged Tiger symbolized the success that the band (yes, all five members, plus the two managers, the Barrow brothers) had been actively chasing and was just then catching up to. Running "ragged", if you will.

There was actually once a song *called* "Seven and the Ragged Tiger", which the band recorded during their 7&TRT sessions, along with a few lucky fans who got to sing along with Simon as well as record a copy of the song from their own tape recorder. This low-quality taped demo song, which ended up being transformed into "The Seventh Stranger" by the time of the album's completion, ended up on a few bootleg b-side compilations from the late '80s and early '90s and could now be had on .mp3 format, if you're willing to search hard enough for it.

Medazzaland, which remains my alltime favorite album no matter how many other albums I listen to, is another album title one might have problems with in terms of what its meaning might possibly be. Okay, story time -- Simon LeBon needed to have dental surgery in the middle of the Medazzaland recording session, so he went and had the surgery done and when he came back to where the album was being worked on (probably Warren's London home -- they had a home studio set up), he was a bit out of it. When asked what was the matter with him, he mentioned that he was still feeling the effects of the anaesthesia he had been administered, and mentioned that the name of it was Midazolam. Warren remarked, "Dude, you're in Medazzaland," and that ended up being the name of the album.

Anyone need anything else Duran-related clearing up? I can answer a wide range of questions here. My mind is a library of information on this one musical artist. Please help me find some use for it.

Pancakes For Breakfast! (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 13 November 2003 13:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yes, and "Union of the Snake" rememberances -- I remember watching the music video in the den of a house we lived in a long time ago when one of Mom's coworkers came by for a visit. Said coworker swung on by the den, where little 13-year-old me was watching the video (off the Decade VHS, btw), and after looking at the video for about 30 seconds remarked that it reminded her of Dune. I still don't know why to this day. Maybe actually watching the movie would help. *winks*

Interesting, though -- the "UOTS" video has that Russell Mulcahy feel to it, but it's not one of the Russell Mulcahy videos. With most Duran videos, you can pretty much tell who was behind the scenes. The Lol & Creme videos ("Girls on Film", "The Chauffeur") were quite strange and slightly exploitative but also quite fun to watch and nice in how risque they were (both showed full breasts, featuring the nipples -- I don't think the full-length version of "Girls on Film" will *ever* be shown on MTV, but might get shown on a music video program on HBO should one ever materialize). The Mulcahy videos were adventurous and very cinematic. The Julien Temple videos... well, c'mon, they were Julien Temple videos, of course they were going to be offbeat and weird! (btw, these would be the ones for "Come Undone" and "Too Much Information", at least as far as Duran were concerned.) The Nick Egan ones ("Ordinary World" and "White Lines") were very '90s, which satisfies me greatly.

I'm serious as a heart attack here. Anyone with any questions, please. I need this stuff to be useful to someone.

Pancakes For Breakfast! (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 13 November 2003 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Dee, I kiss you! I mean, seriously. For every half-baked asshole misogynestic music geek jerk who has insinuated that "girls don't know shit about music, they're just teenboppers who look at the hott boys" and shit, I would love to just refer them to your tremdendous and amazing detailed knowledge of the music of Duran Duran.

Did we ever get an answer on what was the "proper" version of the first self-titled album? Cause the re-release with Is There Something I Should Know is an abomination, as far as I am concerned.

Citizen Kate (kate), Thursday, 13 November 2003 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

The Lol & Creme videos

Of course I would mean Godley & Creme. Kevin (?) Godley and Lol Creme. Ack.

Dee, I kiss you! For every half-baked asshole misogynestic music geek jerk who has insinuated that "girls don't know shit about music, they're just teenboppers who look at the hott boys" and shit, I would love to just refer them to your tremdendous and amazing detailed knowledge of the music of Duran Duran.

Kate, hon, thank you for that. First of all, I wanted to kill everyone in the music press for a rather lengthy period in my life because all I was reading in re: Duran in the mainstream press was about their former teenybopper hero status in the early - mid '80s. I love Duran Duran because of their music first and foremost, and then secondly because of their highly entertaining, original, and innovative music videos. It's just an added bonus that they happen to be attractive. If they weren't as attractive yet still came out with the same great music and groundbreaking videos, I would still consider myself a huge fan of theirs.

Did we ever get an answer on what was the "proper" version of the first self-titled album? Cause the re-release with Is There Something I Should Know is an abomination, as far as I am concerned.

Now it's time for me to kiss you! I think "ITSISK?" is a halfway decent song, sure, and I kinda like it, but stuck in the middle as it is in the 1983 re-release of the 1981 debut album is just horrid. I do believe the actual original release of the debut album had just "Girls on Film", "Planet Earth", "Anyone Out There", "Careless Memories", "(Waiting For The) Nightboat" (which I do believe was just called "Night Boat" then), "Sound Of Thunder", "Friends Of Mine", and "Tel Aviv". There wasn't the appearance of, IIRC, the track "To The Shore" until the second release of the album, which was still back in 1981 so it can still be considered an "original" release of the debut.

*laughs* I just realized I typed the exact track listing of the debut album without even so much as glancing at the album. Ok, I think I listened to that album a bit in my adolescence. ;)

Pancakes For Breakfast! (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 13 November 2003 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Alright, because I am *convinced* (and I no longer have the proof, because I taped over the actual album during a late teens punk rock authenticity spot of Duran-denial which I forever regret) that my version - bought on cassette tape in about 1982 - had a longer version of Planet Earth with an extended intro first, and then Girls On Film. Mine did not have To The Shore on it, either, I am positive of that.

(I did actually buy the 1983 re-release, just cause it had ITSISK (and an alternate cover in which Nick looked hott, but we shan't discuss that) on it.)

Citizen Kate (kate), Thursday, 13 November 2003 13:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Ok, I just double-checked with a definitive discography source and the debut album I was describing (and the one you had) was the U.S. version of the debut album, with the "Night Version" of "Planet Earth" (in that case, you could find that in CD format either on Essential Night Versions or Strange Behaviour) instead of the regular album version. The U.K. version of the debut album actually *did* have "To The Shore" on it and the regular version of "Planet Earth".

Pancakes For Breakfast! (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 13 November 2003 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

But in any case, you did have an original copy of the U.S. version of the debut album. As do I, in fact, but it's (a.) a rather used version and (b.) a cassette. I don't even know if it can still be played. The vinyl I have is the U.K. version of the debut album, with "To The Shore" on it. IIRC, it's the U.S. version that's the rarer and more sought-after one.

Pancakes For Breakfast! (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 13 November 2003 13:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Sigh, that's a shame, because that is the version that I remember (and influenced so much of my adolescence, I mean... life!) and that is the version that I really want. I should borrow the singles box set thing off Catty and see if I can't just BURN the version that I remember.

Citizen Kate (kate), Thursday, 13 November 2003 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

*digs out own vinyl copy of the 1983 re-release*

Oh gosh, you're so right hon. Nick looks gorgeous on the cover! So does John and Roger, in fact. Even Simon (heh, never was a Simon girl) and Andy look cute on this cover.

*laughs* I feel like a teenybopper now.

Sigh, that's a shame, because that is the version that I remember (and influenced so much of my adolescence, I mean... life!) and that is the version that I really want. I should borrow the singles box set thing off Catty and see if I can't just BURN the version that I remember.

Aw. I know just what you mean about everything. Except transfer those feelings onto Rio, because that was the first album of theirs that I owned and listened to and because the most popular U.S. version of that album featured nothing but David Kershenbaum remixes on the first half of the album. (In fact, if I can actually *find* these versions on .mp3, I might just take your lead and burn my own version of Rio, chucking the CD version... heh, which just happens to be the U.K. version of the album, sans the remixes.) At any length, that is a good idea and it's going to be super-easy for you to compile the songs so it shouldn't be too much of a problem in the end. I mean, like I said earlier, there are at least two compilations that have the "Night Version" of "Planet Earth" (it's very disco-ey, isn't it?), and the rest of the tracks are the same ones that can be found on the CD of the 1983 re-release of the debut album, so it'll be no problem.

Now only if I can hunt down David Kershenbaum and get him to press for the version of Rio that he did those remixes on to be released in CD format, I will be a happy girlie.

Pancakes For Breakfast! (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 13 November 2003 14:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Dee -

Thanks for sharing all your information! I have a quick question that you might be able to help me with. I've been looking around the 'net for a translation of the French spoken at the beginning of the NMoM video... I can get the general feel of it, but I'm years and years out of my French courses in college. Do you know, or know where I might find out, what they're saying?

And on the topic of the NMoM videos... in the ( forgive me, I don't know the official names of the versions ) edit that has Simon shooting the arrow and the silhouettes of the chained woman getting beaten up by the military type guy, the woman who is part of the resistance group runs off to alert the police about the uprising, then is back waving the flag whilst Simon grins at her. Was she a traitor who changed her mind? Or was that part of the plan? It really muddies up the plotline.

In the long, more filmic version, this never happens. And I'm wondering if anything was ever said about why they edited the video to include the silhouettes and the confusing statement about the woman informing the police... it only makes things much more confusing.

Help me, Dee-bi Wan, you're my only hope. :)

Cheers ( and thanks! ), deb

deb, Thursday, 13 November 2003 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Deb, sounds like you're talking about the fourth version of the "New Moon on Monday" video (the one with the silhouettes and Simon shooting an arrow) and the second version of the "NMOM" video (the longer, more "filmic" version). There were about four or five versions of the video in all -- I don't think anyone aside from EMI VIPs and the band members themselves have seen the first version of the video. That one was about 20 minutes long and actually featured acting from Simon. The second version is an edited-down version of this first one that was released to clubs in 1983 and was the version that was run when the video was first introduced to MTV, and is also the same version of the video that is on the "Greatest" video compilation IIRC. Then the video was re-edited one more time and was sent out back to MTV and is the version that has been shown on music video channels since about 1984. It's the shortest version of the video. The fourth version is one that shows more from the 20-minute "movie" version of the video and is featured on "Dancing On The Valentine" video compilation. (So I'm thanking God I have both "Dancing On The Valentine" and "Greatest" here!! This means I have all three of the "known", commercially available versions of the video, because I recorded the third version from VH1's "The Big '80s".) I stated the possibility of a fifth version of the video because apparently there was another version of the video released to some American TV show back in the early '80s, but no one's really been able to confirm this as of yet.

*ahem*

But you were interested in finding out why the woman went to the police and then went back to the revolutionaries? I just finished seeing the version of the video you were talking about and it looks to me as though she was setting the police officers up. Perhaps it may have looked as though she was betraying the revolutionaries by talking to the police, and it may have looked as though some of the revolutionaries were practically running for their lives, but I saw the revolutionaries actually running to hide, as if the plan was to point the officers in a particular direction where the revolutionaries were going to be lying in wait, and then when they were to go to this one preplanned area, the revolutionaries were going to have them surrounded, thus beginning their takeover of the regime.

*laughs* Does this make any sense at all? I hope so, because I feel like I'm starting to ramble on, like I normally do whenever I'm talking about this band.

Pancakes For Breakfast! (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 13 November 2003 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

As for the French -- sorry, hon, can't help you there. I can at times barely speak/comprehend the (only) two languages I do know (English and Spanish)! *laughs* But I do know that the person who runs the (really good) Yasmin LeBon fansite is a Duran fan named Nancy who holds at least a master's degree in French (I think she's currently going for her doctorate's right now) and I believe she once posted on the Lizard King forum a translation of what was said during the French speaking intro-type portion of the video, but that was an age and a day ago and I don't know where a permanent link with the explanation of what was stated would be. But, wow, there just happens to be a contact page on that Yasmin LeBon fansite where you could contact Nancy directly and ask her for assistance with this problem. Try to contact her -- she should prove to be helpful with this particular query!

Pancakes For Breakfast! (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 13 November 2003 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

dee...

Thank you so much for the info on the NMoM vids... I have a feeling I might be searching around for "Dancing on the Valentine". Is there a big difference in length between the longer ( "hidden" ) edit on Greatest and Dancing?

Thanks also for the links to the YLB and LK sites... next day off I'll try them both out. :)

I'm beginning to wonder how much money they spent on shooting this video... and what exactly they were planning on doing with the 20 minute version of it. Was it more of a "we're having fun, keep the cameras rolling" type of thing, or a fully scripted concept that just didn't seem to fit?

Hope you're having a smashing day, and thanks once again. :) - deb

Deb, you've actually inspired me to triple-check and to get my "Greatest" and "Dancing On The Valentine" videos so that I could run the versions of "NMOM" located therein back to back and thus be able to answer your question better.

Speedy, you might want to check your reflection in the mirror. I think you've got a huge wad of brown gunk on your nose. Is it from any of the mainstream music press people you've been enslaved t-- I mean, hanging out with?

Pancakes For Breakfast! (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 14 November 2003 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

If it's not too much trouble for you, I *would* love to know the times on the different edits. It would help me decide how much energy and money to expend on tracking down "Dancing on the Valentine". Thanks everso! :)

And, just another quick question, if it's not a bother. I recently heard a small portion of an acoustic performance of "Wild Boys", do you know if they ever performed that song, in its entirety, acoustically?

Hope I'm not being too much of a bother. :)

deb, Saturday, 15 November 2003 05:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey deb! :)

If it's not too much trouble for you, I *would* love to know the times on the different edits. It would help me decide how much energy and money to expend on tracking down "Dancing on the Valentine". Thanks everso! :)

The version that's on "Dancing On The Valentine" is 5 minutes and 29 seconds long. (Thank God for digital counters that reset easily!) Please hang on for the "Greatest" version, which might actually not be that different. Hm. You know, I do also know that I've seen the OTHER longer version of the video, the one without the silhouettes and the arrow slinging and "is she really betraying the resistance?" question, on VH1 Classic. Hm. I'll have to investigate this further.

*sighs* You know, I just looked up information on the "Greatest" DVD and DAMN IT I WANT IT. Wah. I want for birthday present. Birthday just under month and a half away. MUST HAVE IT.

And, just another quick question, if it's not a bother. I recently heard a small portion of an acoustic performance of "Wild Boys", do you know if they ever performed that song, in its entirety, acoustically?

Oh no, it's no problem! I do know that for at least one stretch of the tour Duran did in support of The Wedding Album, they did only all-acoustic shows, so I did know that they must've performed an acoustic version of "Wild Boys" (seeing as though that's one of the songs they always seem to perform live), so I looked it up on this one site and ta-da, there's a bootl-- I mean, "unofficial release" that has it! It's simply titled Unplugged and contains an unplugged version of "Wild Boys" from their 1993 concert in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I don't know if you'd have any luck in finding this because it's an "unofficial release" and it's not even found in the place that would most likely carry it (a highly specialized e-commerce site out of Russia), so here's what I suggest you do: Go over to the aforementioned LK forums, go to the "Buy/Sell or Trade" board, and post that you want the Unplugged bootl-- I mean, "unofficial release" that came out of Italy in 1994. OR you could go to the main "Duran Duran" board and post that you understand that the "acoustic" version of "Wild Boys" is something you'd really love to hear and hopefully a kind woman from Hawaii named Laurie will help you out. Laurie is an angel and a half -- very generous, and very Ned-like in her Duran release completistness. She has practically anything Duran that was released, either officially or unofficially, and will probably have this acoustic version of "Wild Boys" somewhere in her own collection. That is, if she still posts there. :)

btw, thank you for making me feel useful around here. :)

Pancakes For Breakfast! (Dee the Lurker), Saturday, 15 November 2003 07:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Ok, I'm back. I found the other version of the video and it runs about 5 minutes and 1 second long. This would be the version of the video that doesn't have the opening credit-type thing toward the beginning, doesn't have the extra acting toward the beginning, doesn't have the archery demonstrations from SLB, and doesn't have the silhouettes.

I'm going to have to triple-check ASAP on which one is the second version and which one is the fourth version. But not now. I'm about to fall asleep right here on my computer chair. Ack.

Thank you, once again. :) I'm sending positive "Greatest" vibes your way, to help speed up the process of your receiving it! :)

You know, I decided this afternoon to gift myself, so courtesy of Amazon.com, I will have a very happy birthday along with a very merry Christmas. :) Thank you so, hon.

You know, I've become fixated on "the chauffeur" as of late. It's always been one of my favorite songs by them, but for some reason I can't seem to take it out of my player...

Ooh, "The Chauffeur" is such a fun song to sing along with! "When the sun drips down very heady behind, the front of your dress all shadowy-lined, the droning engine throbs in time with your beating heart" (note: I type all that out purely from memory) -- oh God, I'm going to have to listen to that now. I found it highly unique and wonderful that the DVD includes the "The Chauffeur" video -- complete with the breast footage, I'm sure. Isn't that the weirdest video? Hm. I just wish they'd put in the "Do You Believe In Shame?" video -- that's my favorite video of all time. Oh well, they *did* include that Rum Runner video footage (the alternate "Planet Earth", from what I've read), which is ultra-mega-cool.

¡Hasta luego!

Yay about the "Greatest" DVD! I've been busy taking screencaps to make myself some new desktops for my computer. :)

You know, the video for "The Chauffeur" is gorgeous. The black and white images, the car on the road... I'm with it all the way until the blonde woman starts her "interpretive dance". That always pulls me out of the moment, because it just doesn't seem to fit in with the cinematic feel of the rest of the video.

Bad fan alert... I don't think I've ever seen the video for "Do You Believe In Shame". Does it have a storyline, or is it a performance video?

Hope you've been having a smashing day... - deb

Fabulous idea, hon. I'll have to do the same with some of the newer studio photos of the band.

You're totally OTM in re: the "The Chauffeur" video, btw.

I don't think you're a bad fan for stating that! I imagine it got very little, if any, MTV airplay back in 1988, and the only reason I know what the video looks like is because I was able to acquire a compilation of various "obscure" videos of theirs, including the one for "Femme Fatale" and one very rare performance bit for "Friends Of Mine". The "DYBIS?" video does indeed have a storyline, though it's kinda hard to follow. You'd have to watch it in order to figure it out. But be warned -- if you're a John fan, watching the video is kinda painful, because it was shot right when John was experiencing the worst of his cocaine addiction and so he was painfully thin at the time. If you're a Nick fan, though, you can take heart in knowing that this is the video he looks the hottest in. (But still, seeing John look like that IS sad.)

Hope your day is merry too, sweetie.

People answering here may as well go to the guilty pleasure new question. It might relieve you.

Not a guilty pleasure. A pleasure I have ceased being in denial of, and simply admitted as a pleasure. So fuck off!

Just doing a thread revive to say that I will actually inform you about what "the hell Duran Duran is on about" as soon AS I GET OUT OF TONIGHT'S CONCERT WHOO HOO!! You envy me. Admit it. ;) (p.s.: I will attempt to do a setlist thing on another thread, unless someone wants me to economize on threads and suggests a thread to add to.)

Duran Duran and cocaine, they mix so well.
I like how "Save A Prayer" is so obviously about putting off moral concerns til the fucking is done, but the video takes it all literally and has them visiting buddhist temples n shit.

detoxyDancer (sexyDancer), Friday, 6 January 2006 23:15 (nineteen years ago)

You post a lot about cocaine.

So do you use cocaine, yourself?

This thread is amazing, and also prompted me to look up the lyrics for The Reflex. It's weird, when you hear a song as background music at the grocery store your whole life, you assume that it's probably about something fairly normal. I mean, I always figured The Reflex was some sort of popular dance at the time and so he was yelling about how you should use it and not bruise it, like, shake your ass type of thing. And the rest would just be him exhorting people that the reflex was a something something - maybe like "The Reflex is an awesome way, to get your girl to love on you" or whatever. Then you look it up and it's all about selling Renoirs to support a freakish, Gollum-like child named The Reflex, and that's not even the most nonsensical part: the first verse is just a string of intentional-sounding words that just add up to a whole bunch of nothing. Wow. Just wow. Love it.

Holy shit!:

You gone too far this time
But I’m dancing on the valentine
I tell you somebody’s fooling around -
With my chances on the dangerline
I’ll cross that bridge when I find it
Another day to make my stand, oh..
High time is no time for deciding
If I should find a helping hand, oh..

So why don’t you use it
Try not to bruse it
Buy time don’t lose it

(chorus)

The reflex is an only child, he’s waiting in the park
The reflex is in charge of finding treasure in the dark
And watching over lucky clover isn’t that bizarre
Every little thing the reflex does leaves you answered with a
Question mark

I’m on a ride and I want to get off
But they won’t slow down the roundabout
I sold the renoir and the tv set
Don’t want to be around when this gets out

(chorus) (chorus)

The reflex is an only child, he’s waiting by the park
The reflex is in charge of finding treasure in the dark
And watching over lucky clover isn’t that bizarre
Every little thing the reflex does is an answer with a
Question mark

(chorus) (chorus)

The reflex is an only child, he’s waiting by the park
The reflex is in charge of finding treasure in the dark
And watching over lucky clover isn’t that bizarre
Every little thing the reflex does leaves me answered with a
Question mark

Oh, the reflex what a game he’s hiding all the cards
The reflex is in charge of finding treasure in the dark
And watching over lucky clover isn’t that bizarre
Every little thing the reflex does leaves you answered with a
Question mark

I never gave much thought to Duran Duran lyrics either, but you guys are right -- this stuff is batshit insane.

Telegram force and ready
I knew this was a big mistake
There's a fine line drawing
My senses together
And I think it's about to break

If I listen close I can hear them singers
Voices in your body coming through on the radio
The Union of the Snake is on the climb
Moving up it's gonna race it's gonna break
Through the borderline

Nightshades on a warning
Give me strength at least give me a light
Give me anything even sympathy
There's a chance you could be right

The Union of the Snake is on the climb
It's gonna race it's gonna break
Gonna move up to the borderline

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 7 January 2006 01:00 (nineteen years ago)

Even more insane are the lyrics to "Of Crime & Passion." Is that the one with "My head is full of chop stick/I don't like it"?

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Saturday, 7 January 2006 01:03 (nineteen years ago)

Whatta thread! I esp like these bits

1) Fuck me backwards I'd forgotten they'd called an album SEVEN AND THE RAGGED TIGER!
-- Tom (ebros...

2) eutopia's brief appearance (how could we be so remiss as not to explain that the name Madonna is in the West associated with the opposite of Sexual Indecency??)

3) dee's full-on enlightenment project! People who Hear Everything and Comment Impartially are fine, but fangirl- and -boyism is to me essential ILM.

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 7 January 2006 01:51 (nineteen years ago)

Some of Duran Duran's lyrics may be among the stupidest ever, particularly considering English is their native tongue.

But their brilliant music means they deserve not to get too much critizism for it anyway :)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 7 January 2006 02:11 (nineteen years ago)

I thought it was Chap Stick.

Not that makes it that much less insane of a lyric.

tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Saturday, 7 January 2006 14:53 (nineteen years ago)

Hope it's NOT ChapStick - that would actually kinda make sense, and we don't want that!

(Disclaimer: Never actually heard that particular DD song, except maybe once or twice. But I like all the other ones mentioned and enjoyed seeing the actual lyrics laid out. Deliberate throwaway nonsense beats ill-informed political bullshit or redundant clichés, easily.)
