Read in the Times this morning that the line-up was announced already:

SIREN MUSIC FESTIVAL Coney Island, July 17. One of the most welcome new summer additions, the Siren Festival is a day of sun and sea mist along the streets and boardwalk of Coney Island with the joyous cacophony of indie rock from noonish till sundown, courtesy of the good people at The Village Voice. I'm not clear on how this is relevant, but I saw Pearl Jam in 1996, and then again in the summer of 1998. The latter was a festival show.

Please note that I am in no way putting down the acts that Hstencil mentioned. It's the newer Subpop acts that I'm not crazy about.

It's also really weird to insist that people like the acts that inspired (or appear to have inspired) artists that they do enjoy. I guess it makes sense that someone defending Subpop would feel that way, but it seems to ignore a wide range of factors, including differences in style, writing, individual charisma, etc. Aside from scene/label lineage and geography, there isn't much in common between Earth and Pearl Jam, you know? Pearl Jam's just a mainstream rock band. Most of their appeal (or lack thereof) has more to do with them writing pop songs that get played on the radio than record labels and who they are pals with.

I don't think any of those bands I listed, save Mudhoney, particularly exemplify the Sub-Pop sound (that, in turn, certainly had a bit to do with Pearl Jam). They are just the Sub-Pop bands I happen to like.

I wonder how many people would show-up for hstencil's hypothetical bill. Enough to fill a modest suburban backyard, maybe? Or am I underestimating the draw of the Michael Yonkers Band?

matt, my parents live in NJ, have a good sized backyard with a swimming pool. the train station is super close. there's a mall, starbucks, 7-11 and dunkin donuts in walking distance. we could play the pearl jam cd i shoplifted when i was 15 on the boombox between bands. ill make my dad bring home lots of pizza from our store.

oh, we should make this happen! it would be the poor man's siren fest.

The Fiery Furnaces set was alright, but very messy. They all kinds of technical problems, and it seemed as though they were just trying to get through the set at some points. The last two times I've seen them were better, but this was still pretty fun. I imagine that their set must have been totally incomprehensible and mystifying to the uninitiated, especially during stuff like "Chris Michaels."

TV On The Radio and Electric Six sucked, yes. Especially E6 -- I was near subgenius, where no one was grooving at all. A few bald dudes in baseball caps sang "Gay Bar" to their dates.

Tv on the radio were actually (despite awful sound) better than I've ever seen them. I'm not really a fan, my best friend from high school is in the band, and im just glad they are doing well.

the sound was a LOT better in the press area up front, so while I loved the Electric Six, I can see why anybody standing around elsewhere would be bored (I caught Trail Of Dead out in the audience area and it was quieter than my stereo).

Am I the only person who not only caught as many bands as I could but wish I could go back and catch all the stuff I missed? I'm kinda surprised everybody's all nonchalant about catching one group, getting there late and leaving early. Thought there'd be some other big dorks around.

i was far away but i'm tall so i did see when one band member who sings (dunno their names) disappeared backstage briefly and reappeared with a case of water bottles which he heaved into the audience.

the real action where i was was the fight circle in which drunk aggro-hipsters wrestled each other on the asphalt, which was all fun and games until someone got hurt. at which point it was just fun.
