this is the most twisted carnival music ever.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 6 May 2004 11:55 (twenty years ago) link

this is the one on monitor, by the way.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 6 May 2004 11:58 (twenty years ago) link

I want that shit, like NOW!

ddb, Thursday, 6 May 2004 13:46 (twenty years ago) link

this is the most twisted carnival music ever.

you sound like the burn-outs in my high school when the first mr. bungle came out.

Please say this sounds NOTHING like mr. bungle.

ddb, Thursday, 6 May 2004 13:48 (twenty years ago) link

sure it does! yay!

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 6 May 2004 13:49 (twenty years ago) link

I hate you.

ddb, Thursday, 6 May 2004 14:01 (twenty years ago) link

i'll remember that when you try and come over my house and put this on your ipod.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 6 May 2004 14:04 (twenty years ago) link

sounds good.

ddb, Thursday, 6 May 2004 14:07 (twenty years ago) link

So is it more like Mr Bungle or Don Cab?

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 6 May 2004 14:12 (twenty years ago) link

the keyboards are very carnival-esque, but it really doesn't sound like bungle at all.

there are three guitars with a lot of digital delay sampling, which makes it sound a little like the guitar work on american don.

then there is john stanier throwing very weird, off-kilter beats over the top of everything. nothing like damon che.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 6 May 2004 14:18 (twenty years ago) link

I've been soo exited about this, just my luck im completely skint at the moment.

I've got a shitload of boots of their live shows and that horrible 'sampler' thing they put on on the monitor site.

I'd always wished Don Cab would get rid of the horrible 'look at me' drums, Damon is amazing but half the time I hate what he's doing, even if it is technically amazing and I hate his tone.

From the boots this is exactly what i've wanted, Don Cab, but with BEATS, occasional keyboards and the odd "exiting bit" (beatboxing, minimal repetitive drums). Is it the same Braxton dude that does all the weird messed up sound/vocals electronic stuff?

Been a bit disapointed with some of the stuff I've heard tho, songs are too long and all sound quite samey, the sort of music you have to sit through the crap to find the 'real shit'.

TomB (TomB), Thursday, 6 May 2004 15:28 (twenty years ago) link

hahaha Mr. Bungle.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 6 May 2004 15:29 (twenty years ago) link

yeah, it's the same tyondai braxton, son of anthony braxton. his presence isn't HUGE in battles, although he DOES beatbox.

ian williams is the frontman!

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 6 May 2004 15:30 (twenty years ago) link

When I saw them they were sharing the stage pretty much.

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Thursday, 6 May 2004 15:36 (twenty years ago) link

there is a certain Led Zep quality to Stanier's drumming for Battles which I think makes the band even that much more interesting.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 6 May 2004 15:38 (twenty years ago) link

I could really do without all the Beatboxing, it's gimicky and stupid.

Tyondai is Ian's Bitch. Battles is the band Don Cab would have been if Damon wasn't so....Damon.

Hstencil OTM, Stainer hits really hard like Bonham, but Stainer does way more off time/weird shit...Bonzo was straight up meat and potatoes.

ddb, Thursday, 6 May 2004 15:46 (twenty years ago) link

yeah, he's like a more groove-oriented (god what a dumb sounding phrase) Bonham.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 6 May 2004 15:48 (twenty years ago) link

hstencil, you working as program director of a smooth jazz station now?

ddb, Thursday, 6 May 2004 15:50 (twenty years ago) link

up next after the break, more smooth sounds!

*cue station ID*
*cue Metamucil commercial*

Now we're back, here's a little Steely Dan for ya...

*cue "Deacon Blues"*

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Thursday, 6 May 2004 16:02 (twenty years ago) link

dude it is really unfair to put donkey balls > Tyondai. He seems like a nice guy to me.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 6 May 2004 16:04 (twenty years ago) link

All I know is that Ian hides behind other musicians while Tyondai is self-contained and flawless.

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Thursday, 6 May 2004 16:06 (twenty years ago) link

did you read that on Pitchfork?

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 6 May 2004 16:07 (twenty years ago) link

You've got better comebacks than that, no?

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Thursday, 6 May 2004 16:08 (twenty years ago) link

no, not really.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 6 May 2004 16:09 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, I was trying to be nice.

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Thursday, 6 May 2004 16:09 (twenty years ago) link

tyondai is the nicest out of all of them.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 6 May 2004 16:11 (twenty years ago) link

or he looks that way at least. people with afros are non-threatening.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 6 May 2004 16:12 (twenty years ago) link

Tyondai is SUPER nice...but I can't put super nice on my iPod.

ddb, Thursday, 6 May 2004 16:12 (twenty years ago) link

and you can't put this EP on either.. holler

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 6 May 2004 16:13 (twenty years ago) link

You could put his music on your iPod perhaps? Unless of course you only want to put a person's qualities on your iPod in which case no, you cannot do that.

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Thursday, 6 May 2004 16:13 (twenty years ago) link

can you put donkey balls on your iPod?

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 6 May 2004 16:13 (twenty years ago) link

yes, it's right after depeche mode on ddb's pod

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 6 May 2004 16:14 (twenty years ago) link

no Dinosaur on his iPod? I find that hard to believe.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 6 May 2004 16:14 (twenty years ago) link

actually don caballero -> donkey balls

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 6 May 2004 16:15 (twenty years ago) link

Donkey Balls on the other hand...fit right between Don Caballero & Drive Like Jehu on the iPod.

ddb, Thursday, 6 May 2004 16:15 (twenty years ago) link

everything in its proper place.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 6 May 2004 16:15 (twenty years ago) link

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 6 May 2004 16:22 (twenty years ago) link

personally, i like braxton's solo album and his split thingy with parts & labor. but then there's no accounting for my bad taste.

jack cole (jackcole), Thursday, 6 May 2004 16:22 (twenty years ago) link

I like his stuff on the split too...I just think there is a lot of clutter with battles, and I'm looking at Braxton.

ddb, Thursday, 6 May 2004 16:23 (twenty years ago) link

no, the clutter = 3 guitars, no bass player. HELLOW LOW ENDW.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 6 May 2004 16:23 (twenty years ago) link

aw, i see -- how what he does fits into the Battles (who I have never heard, mind you).

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 13:18 (twenty years ago) link

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 13:43 (twenty years ago) link

Williams’ Faulknerian (as the Ivy Leaguer in him would undoubtedly appreciate) picking re-emerges in Battles, only slightly shattered by Braxton’s own pedal pranks and Stanier’s shockingly precise drumming.

hmmm, I always thot of it more as Gertrude Stein-ish. Nice review, Yanc3y.

the "collaboration" they speak of is missing a collaborator. douchebag.

is it a "collaboration" between williams and braxton? yes, like it says. does it suggest they are the only musicians on the record? no. (fwiw, the sentence you're talking about doesn't mention either stanier or konopka, so it's missing two collaborators, although, again, not choosing to mention everyone who participated in the creation of the record is not in itself a factual error.)

scott pl. (scott pl.), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 13:54 (twenty years ago) link

scott, defending pitchfork is just stupid...the review was utter shit...you have no weight in your argument.

stand down.

ddb (ddb), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 13:56 (twenty years ago) link

BUT they mention stanier in the review. nowhere in the review do they acknowledge that there are 3 guitarists in the band, or mention dave's previous band lynx.

i'd say an important fact is MISSING from that review, yes.

also, do they not all participate in writing the music? I dunno, I haven't seen the credits on the album, but it doesn't seem to me like Ian tells John what to play or anything.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 13:59 (twenty years ago) link

also this:

"As pliable and starkly gorgeous as Ian Williams' guitar playing was with Don Caballero, he was never the group's driving force. Despite serving as lead guitarist for a band that came to typify a genre, Williams always played a somewhat diminished role, relegated to ancillary status by drummer-cum-frontman Damon Che's beguiling polyrhythms."

is just plain stupid.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 14:00 (twenty years ago) link

yes. williams' ABSOLUTE POWER on don caballero 2 is undeniable.

scott: are you going to defend president bush next? wanker?

sorry, I didn't realize faulty logic and your own loose definition of "facts" are ok as long as they're applied to things like pitchfork. the SW beta band review on the page yancey linked to only mentions two of the four band members - surely this is also a factual error.

scott pl. (scott pl.), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 14:06 (twenty years ago) link

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 14:07 (twenty years ago) link

... I didn't realize faulty logic and your own loose definition of "facts"

um, the declaration of a "collaboration" between only two band members is the only loose definition of a fact going on here.

american don is def. heavy on the stormundstress effects... the whole double headrush thing going on.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 14:13 (twenty years ago) link

i mean under the definition of collaboration, the review is completely ignoring the "intellectual effort" of an equally-billed bandmate, musician, performer, etc.

he is bringing as much to the table as the rest of them, and i'm sure if he read that review, he'd be pretty pissed off about it too.

scott. please.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 14:14 (twenty years ago) link

not to flog a dead horse, but scott has really irked me. so i would like to bring up the next sentence after the aforementioned one:

"The guitarists' styles harmonize uncannily well, and EP C underscores their individual abilities while simultaneously siphoning them into an adherent combo."

there are THREE guitarists ok. the review is flawed, do your job, "associate editor".

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 14:24 (twenty years ago) link

cutty, you don't know who brought what to the table, and reviews ignore the "intellectual effort[s]" of lots of people. There's no obligation to pass out credit in equal measures, it's a subjective interpretation of what is noteworthy, newsworthy, etc., about a record. Pulp had equal singwriting billing throughout their career, but Jarvis Cocker got a bit more press than, say, Rob Mackey or Candida Doyle. It's the way it is. Braxton and Williams, the most well-known musicians on the project, are collaborating, yes? I'd assume their names are up front because they're the draw to the project, and failing to mention some guy from lynx neither makes that the "collaboration" sentence untrue nor does it imply that nobody else worked on the project. (esp. bcuz the drummer had already been mentioned at this point.)

I suspect we wouldn't be having this conversation if it the review was printed in any other publication (cue: cuz any other pub would have gotten it right, etc. ;) )

scott pl. (scott pl.), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 14:27 (twenty years ago) link

Cutty,

I'm with Scott here. The author clearly tuned his stereo MP3-player to filter out only Ian and Ty's guitars. Why don't you just go to burritoville or something?

Sorry,
gygax!

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 14:28 (twenty years ago) link

There's no obligation to pass out credit in equal measures, it's a subjective interpretation of what is noteworthy, newsworthy, etc., about a record.

what are the writing credits on the EPs?

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 14:30 (twenty years ago) link

filter-in? or filter-out?

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 14:31 (twenty years ago) link

"The guitarists' styles harmonize uncannily well, and EP C underscores their individual abilities while simultaneously siphoning them into an adherent combo."

there are THREE guitarists ok.

uh, ok...what about this indicates whether there are two, three, four, or 20 guitarists?

scott pl. (scott pl.), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 14:31 (twenty years ago) link

the previous sentence!

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 14:33 (twenty years ago) link

read it as an uninformed reader would. you are misinforming your readers with a flawed review.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 14:33 (twenty years ago) link

Scott do you like Battles? Do you think this is a well written review?

ddb (ddb), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 14:34 (twenty years ago) link

ERROR 2 TIMEOUT

TURN BACK YOU POXY FULE

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 14:35 (twenty years ago) link

the previous sentence!

cutty: specifically what part? (granted, "combo" probably couldn't describe a group of 20 musicians...)

scott pl. (scott pl.), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 14:35 (twenty years ago) link

he means the "bass-and-drums" part. There is no bass player in Battles.

I question the "arrhythmic...riff" thing too, as that's just kinda sorta impossible, musically.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 14:36 (twenty years ago) link

"EP C and Tras, Fantasy are the first in a succession of three EPs scheduled for release this year by Battles, a collaboration between Williams and emergent avant-jazz composer Tyondai Braxton. The guitarists' styles harmonize uncannily well, and EP C underscores their individual abilities while simultaneously siphoning them into an adherent combo."

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 14:37 (twenty years ago) link

xpost - he also means this sentence:

""Hi/Lo" opens with a chiming, arrhythmic Rhodes riff before stiffening up to a sludgy bass-and-drums vamp."

which was "aforementioned ie. not the next sentence he cited that came after it.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 14:37 (twenty years ago) link

Scott do you like Battles? Do you think this is a well written review?

battles are fine enough at what they do - granted, I'm not much of a fan of don cab, etc.; is it a well-written review? well, I never said it was ;)

scott pl. (scott pl.), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 14:37 (twenty years ago) link

oh wait, maybe not, but still that sentence is fucked.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 14:38 (twenty years ago) link

he means the "bass-and-drums" part. There is no bass player in Battles.

right, that is an error.

scott pl. (scott pl.), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 14:38 (twenty years ago) link

is Ty Braxton "avant-jazz" because his father is? I've never heard anything remotely resembling jazz in his solo music.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 14:38 (twenty years ago) link

yes, i also mentioned that as an error. are you relenting yet?

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 14:39 (twenty years ago) link

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 14:40 (twenty years ago) link

yes, i also mentioned that as an error.

I know you did, and I never disputed that! My own dispute was over this collaboration business.

scott pl. (scott pl.), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 14:42 (twenty years ago) link

what about the avant-jazz part?

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 14:44 (twenty years ago) link

well, as a battles/don cab fan...i think the review is fucking stupid, it is strewn with inaccuracies and mostly composed of wordy and generic critic speak. It is NOT well written! I would think that pitchfork being a Chicago thing they'd at least get somebody who has seen Don Cab or at the very least heard them.

I dont understand why, as a pedestrian fan of the band you would argue against someone who is obviously a fan?

Bored?

What the hell, I saw these guys at some small room at a liberal arts college in nowheresville Iowa and it was fucking great! They're on some tour supporting Prefuse 73, of all people. Hook-up from Braxton's collabo with said artist, maybe. I bought a couple EPs!

Oddly enough, the next day I was walking through a shopping mall in Des Moines (an hour from where they performed) and saw them in a sporting goods store! Their van was getting an oil change. My world is random, and I definitely did not realize at the time that John from Battles was in Tomahawk, who I have also seen. This is definitely not coherent, but I really liked their performance.
