Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 10 May 2004 06:32 (twenty-one years ago)

if only all editors were like this! (sorry for clogging up thread)

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 10 May 2004 07:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Matos I keep on e-mailing you re this - are you spam filtering me?

This would explain a few curious silences actually!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 10 May 2004 11:17 (twenty-one years ago)

tim finney can you hear me, can you feel me near you?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 10 May 2004 11:20 (twenty-one years ago)

(ha ha and I thought Matos was just politely ignoring all my half-arsed pitches!)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 10 May 2004 11:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess the Weekly's IT has considered all Australians as spam!

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 10 May 2004 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

HOT OZ MACRO ON MICRO ACTION

Andy K (Andy K), Monday, 10 May 2004 16:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I've been there and I'VE SEEN IT. Indeed I shopped in the very record stores Mr. Finney judged of worth (and some not of worth).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 10 May 2004 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

hmmmm. I haven't gotten anything from you, Tim. I don't know how this can be rectified. are you on Friendster by any chance? or something you can send to me thirdhand?

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 10 May 2004 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

and so, the dawn of Payster

sigh.

not as much as tim "50 dollars before I turn on my pc" finney, admittedly.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 10 May 2004 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Um, maybe Tim should get a temporary hotmail account? Just a hint.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 10 May 2004 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 10 May 2004 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean, why else would his emails NOT be getting to the Weekly? Does have an "au" suffix? Either case, Matos, I can you should ask the IT guy what the fuck is up with that shit...(but somehow get Finney's original email address first via a temporary non-Aussie free email account)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 10 May 2004 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd love it if the random googlers thought Tiffany was contactable via ILM too.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Monday, 10 May 2004 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Once or twice I've wondered if mails of mine have gotten through, but I've always gotten responses from Zer Man, so I guess no worries for me.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 10 May 2004 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Because you might also be losing great story pitches from OTHER people too!

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 10 May 2004 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 10 May 2004 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

(then again, maybe you're missing out on a whole load of BAD pitches too, so be forewarned, lest this problem actually be fixed)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 10 May 2004 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

LOL OMG CAN I WRITE ON JOHN CENA KTHXBYE

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 10 May 2004 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

What if Tiffany's been emailing?!

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Monday, 10 May 2004 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, Tim: email me at matoswk@hotmail.com, and we'll see if it works.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 10 May 2004 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Ok, Tiffany: email me at ddb@yahoo.com, and we'll see if it works.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 10 May 2004 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 10 May 2004 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

EW "spam filter" EW EW EW

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 10 May 2004 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll try again from both my e-mail addresses but they've both got .au suffixes (if that is the problem). If that doesn't work I'll set up a hotmail account.

Strongo,
You know that "i feel you"
Is not the words I want to say to you
All that you have to do
Is close your eyes then you'll feel it too

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 10 May 2004 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I want Tiffany's thoughts on Luomo immediatley.

C0L1N B3CK3TT (Colin Beckett), Monday, 10 May 2004 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

What's weird is that you can sing Colin's comment to the song Strongo invoked.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 10 May 2004 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Does not compute.

Commander Riker (numbertwo), Monday, 10 May 2004 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I sense some.. sort of relief. Like a communication problem has been solved.

Deanna Troi, Tuesday, 11 May 2004 00:45 (twenty-one years ago)

What's weird is that you can sing Colin's comment to the song Strongo invoked.

Only if it were some sort of vocoded Zapp and Roger version.

C0L1N B3CK3TT (Colin Beckett), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 00:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Soulwax to thread!

C0L1N B3CK3TT (Colin Beckett), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 00:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I see no problem with that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 00:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd like this thread to live on. Can people please bring other things to my attention?

ATTENTION TIM FINNEY

...did you finally get the new Orbital album? And have you added me to your slsk list and shouldn't I add you and maybe you should drop me an e-mail etc.?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 02:27 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't have slsk as I am a mac nerd (but not enough of one to make slsk myself; esp. since the computer I download with isn't even at my own house). ==> I haven't heard the new Orbital cd. I understand it is good though!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 02:31 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't have slsk as I am a mac nerd

Ah! There are Mac clients now my friend, for I am Macboy too. :-) Drop myself or Elvis T. a line, or check out some of the threads around here, there's been some posting about them.

And yes, quite good, I just finished relistening to it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 02:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Vaguely related: I've found out i'm receiving an iPod for my birthday, which is marvellous and totally outta leftfield.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 02:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Attention Tim Finney : Why do you never invite us all to the booty parties your flatmates sometimes hold? The whole of Melbourne want onboard.

cnwb (cnwb), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 06:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Unfortunately I don't live with my old flatmates anymore! I finally moved in with my boyfriend who is not so pro-booty.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 05:10 (twenty-one years ago)

[insert obvious "so why'd you move in with him, hyuck hyuck" joke here]

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

attn. tim finney: sorry i didn't respond to yr last email with anything like timeliness. i have not heard of a single one of those ukg tracks!

Attn. Tim: a Soulseek thread which mentions Nicotine, the program you'd want, and other good Mac-centric details.

Tim, good defense of White Houses (I stand by my criticisms: too much hiding of light under bushels - great chorus, why hide it by hiving it off so much), but do you like Vanessa's take on Where The Streets Have No Name? That's going to be harder to justify.

JON CARTER is spinning at, er, FAMOUS at the qbh next week. would I be advised to brave the haircut house crowd to see the man in action?

yrs,

H2-H4 (H2-H4), Monday, 2 October 2006 00:41 (eighteen years ago)

Dear H2-H4,

Haven't ever seen Jon Carter play live - and haven't been to Famous for that matter - so can't say for sure. Carter's new Chinese Laundry mix looks like it might be good but it also looks very safe, so I'm not sure if you'll hear anything you wouldn't hear by going to any random electro/tech/house night. This is the tracklisting:

1 Trentemoller - Beta Boy
2 Sharon Philips - Want 2 Need 2 (Trentemoller remix)
3 Ame, Derrick Carter And Friends - Where We At
4 Trevor Loveys - Legwarmer
5 Roysksopp - Only This Moment (Alan Braxe and Fred Falke Remix)
6 John Starlight - Shadowbreaker (Boys Noize Mix)
7 Smitty vs John Kelley Feat. Raya - Universal Love Vibration (Angel Alanis Mix)
8 Darkmountaingroup - Lose Control (Main Mix)
9 Peter Rauhofer - Believe In Me
10 Jon Carter Feat. Patra - How Do You Love? (JC's 06 Rerub)
11 Azzido Da Bass - Lonely By Your Side (Play Paul Inst. Mix)
12 Ramsay - Shake That Thing (Max Graham Throwdown Mix)
13 Christopher & Raphael Just - Popper (Shinichi Osawa Distortion Disco Edit)

As for Famous, I never have a problem with dancefloor crowds on the assumption that one doesn't feel physically threatened, and we can safely assume that won't be the case here! I can't really complain about haircut house types anyway b/c I basically look like a haircut house denizen who doesn't go to enough effort slash doesn't spend enough money on clothes.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 2 October 2006 01:13 (eighteen years ago)

haha! well that all seems like sound advice.

H2-H4 (H2-H4), Monday, 2 October 2006 02:21 (eighteen years ago)

I saw Carter at the Chinese Laundry earlier this year, it was a very tech-house set, anything else sped up to fit in, like Public Enemy acapellas or Tiga (multiples of both). about three hours in, he played an edit of Song 2 and then did 20-30 minutes of jump-up-and-down stuff, hip-hop/mashups/rock, then when it went back to the constant 4/4 my knees gave up. Listened to his 2001 Breezeblock again this week to try and tempt me into going again this month...

Tim F, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 09:43 (eighteen years ago)

nine months pass...

This seems like as good a thread as any in which to relay some news. Probably more suited to ILE, but at least this thread is more likely to attract the actually interested rather than be blatantly self-aggrandising.

Anyway, since I spend far too much time here it's probably a good idea for me to let you all know that I won't be around for a while, probably about a month.

After a month-just-gone of increasingly severe headaches, this week I was diagnosed with an impressively large, but hopefully benign, brain tumor lodged in my cerebellum behind my right ear.

I'm having this removed on Monday, in what will hopefully be a fairly straightforward operation - the tumor is fairly close to the skull so the surgery will be on the less invasive side of things.

All things being equal I can expect to be fully recovered in about two months. If worse scenarios move from faint possibility to unavoidable reality I will certainly let people know, but there doesn't appear to be any reason to panic at this stage - I've met with my neurosurgeon and the signs are all fairly good in this case.

I will be missing my pontification soap-box horribly I'm sure, not to mention all of you. Look after yourselves. Perhaps listen to music you suspect I would approve of.

Tim F, Saturday, 22 December 2007 18:37 (seventeen years ago)

I really hope that this all goes well and you are fighting fit soon. Don't rush anything and keep us posted.

Will be hoping this is all okay over the holidays.

Plus, what Andy said about care packages...

Mordechai Shinefield, Sunday, 23 December 2007 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

Hey everyone, Tim's sister just contacted me and they've already heard from the surgeon. Apparently the tumour is benign and although they were still operating at the time she emailed me, the tumour has been encapsulated and hasn't spread at all.

I've been in touch with Tim's sister a bit over the last couple of months and she's promised to keep me updated - because of where the tumour is Tim will have very limited use of his neck etc over the coming weeks, so he's unlikely to be at a computer for a while. Although he's not out of the woods just yet, the initial news is good. Tim's family has been following his lead and being very positive - will let you all know as and when I hear anything further.

Matt DC, Monday, 24 December 2007 12:23 (seventeen years ago)

The family is popping the champagne right now, so keeping everything crossed.

I haven't checked out the Empire of the Sun album yet because I remain suspicious of them somehow. I guess I'm holding their popular embrace by Oz listeners against them, which is unfair given the same thing happened to the Avalanches.

And that Electrik Red review is great.

I've introduced around 15 people I know to them in the last month thanks to you and the rest of the Rnb crew.

Congratulations Tim!

Have you heard this mix?

http://www.mixcloud.com/unbongo/unknown-soulja-un-bongo-mix-2-november-2009/

It's kind of my favorite thing in the world right now.. I don't even know what kind of music this is supposed to be. To my ears it sounds a lot like 2-step, a little like bassline, a bit like dubstep.. but what do I know?

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 12:41 (fifteen years ago)

Ot maybe this is the "UK funky" that everyone's been talking about

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 12:41 (fifteen years ago)

Whatever it is, i freaking love it

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 12:42 (fifteen years ago)

I mean there's also some rap in there

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 12:46 (fifteen years ago)

And some dancehall. Judging by the tracklisting that's a fairly wide-ranging FACT-esque mix with bits of everything you mention in there. There's probably some funky in there as well although there aren't any names I recognise.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 12:50 (fifteen years ago)

that electrik red review is great!

brooklyn we go ham (samosa gibreel), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 12:55 (fifteen years ago)

Jesus, Mess + Noise is like an AU P4K skin. Scary.

Tim, I love the series and I'm sorry to hear you're dealing with medical issues. Good on you.

cee-oh-tee-tee, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 13:02 (fifteen years ago)

Tracer, yeah that mix looks very FACT-y - there's lots of mixes floating around the internet from people like Julio Bashmore, Bok Bok, Princess, Mosca, Dub Boy and the like that cover similar ground. I haven't listened to that yet but how amazing is Major Notes' "Holy Ghost" (which is UK funky - most of the rest isn't but in related territory)? The bit when the vocal comes in toward the end is just A++++.

Chris are you in Australia now? Or have you just seen the first season? I'm really looking forward to Season 2 becoming available on the internet as I (like to) think it's much better. Mess + Noise is a bit scary, yes! I like to think we won them over at least a little bit.

When does Tim Finney's first book come out?

MikoMcha, Saturday, 15 November 2014 09:44 (ten years ago)

six years pass...

Is Tim Finney now a big shot lawyer? I was looking for recent music writeups and came up empty-handed. There is however a very well-to-do-looking fellow of his namesake listed as being director of a law firm in Melbourne. Nothing on music or on Pitchfork in years, though!

hbbh111, Tuesday, 27 April 2021 08:46 (four years ago)

Yeah I don't write professionally any more, but still try to do year-end write ups here.

Tim F, Wednesday, 28 April 2021 00:04 (four years ago)

Tim Finney why haven’t you made a 2021 playlist on spotify?

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 28 April 2021 00:09 (four years ago)

There is however a very well-to-do-looking fellow

That's all you needed to say, really. Not only do I remember all of us on a.m.a. going "What the hell, he's younger than all of us by some years and still knows nearly everything" back in the late nineties, but when I finally met the good man in 2002 I then thought "This is ridiculous, he's also better looking than all of us too!"

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 28 April 2021 00:25 (four years ago)

spotify playlist is coming

Tim F, Wednesday, 28 April 2021 05:04 (four years ago)

Tim F does not exit, he's a phantasm created by the ILX lab in the hopes of teasing us with the perfect listener and chap.

Excelente!

Are they ranked? If Olof Dreijer is your #1 I love that choice and it’s one of the couple of songs we overlap! I see at least 10 songs in there which are also in mine so that’s a bigger number than in past years and also I see several which I had never heard before.

Great looking list so far

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 12 May 2021 17:52 (four years ago)

monotony, Wednesday, 12 May 2021 23:56 (four years ago)

Thanks all.

The list isn't ranked and I'm not sure how I would go about that if I wanted to. It's instead sequenced with a rather loose view of flow in mind but I have no idea whether it works for anyone else.

seven months pass...

I didn't have the physical or emotional energy to do 2023 write-ups sorry (maybe 2024 will be my year), but I did make this incomplete/partial playlist of stuff I loved from last year:

https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5h47izuNqetbkpyOumi8rk?si=0ae54b77556d4f99

Will try to call out a few in the EOY voting thread.

Tim F, Tuesday, 9 January 2024 21:54 (one year ago)

so much good stuff I wouldn't have heard otherwise! thanks Tim. enjoying Madeline Kinney right now.

what you say is true but by no means (lukas), Tuesday, 9 January 2024 22:16 (one year ago)

Thanks Tim! I see 5 out of 10 of my own top 10. 7 if I count the artists from which I chose other song instead.

A shame there’s no writeup this year, would’ve loved to read your takes on them but the playlist is terrific.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 10 January 2024 14:07 (one year ago)

Are they ranked in order? First time hearing this Cloth song and I loved it.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 10 January 2024 14:13 (one year ago)

Not in order but in a vague attempt at flow, and I also tried to minimise overlap with other playlists I had made so sometimes the song chosen isn’t necessarily a standout favourite from the artist’s album.

But yeah the entire Cloth album is just really lovely, one of my favourites of the year for sure.

Tim F, Wednesday, 10 January 2024 19:35 (one year ago)

I keep finding great songs in here. Delilah Holiday - silent streets was off my radar and I’m currently obsessed with it.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 11 January 2024 15:48 (one year ago)

Cheers for this and for your artpop playlist, Tim! Also loving Cloth.

etc, Tuesday, 23 January 2024 20:40 (one year ago)

thanks Tim, excited to hear your playlist. recently I'm taking a break from deep dives into older genres/artists to check more new music. like back in those lovely UKG days. whatever happened to r/t/c - does he post under a different name now?

Paul, Wednesday, 24 January 2024 02:22 (one year ago)

thanks moka and etc!

This is the 2023 art-pop playlist etc means btw: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4WdPNCsDegk7ZdsdKwswwu?si=ae075c46ed50449c

Paul, sadly I don't know what happened to r|t|c, but he hasn't posted for many years now - and if he had changed user names I think we would have worked it out by now!

Tim F, Wednesday, 24 January 2024 03:02 (one year ago)

I have been tinkering with a "best of 2024" "shortlist", but at something like 13.5 hours it's still unfeasibly long, so I made this more approachable "sampler" of some of the music I loved in 2024. Do not listen if you hate me.
