After Gondry, Jonze & Cunningham, what's next on Directors Label, does anyone know?

On the Palm Pics site, they've got a bit about how there will be more in the series to be released this year. I haven't heard any more and I've emailed them a few times, but had no response. Does anyone know? Any guesses for which directors would likely fall under their limelight?
Thanks!

robot snare, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 04:21 (twenty-two years ago)

floria sigismondi is my guess

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 04:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Hype Williams!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 04:48 (twenty-two years ago)

not to sound like an ignoramus, but...who is floria sigismondi?

robot snare, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 04:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Are you too ignorant to use google?

http://www.floriasigismondi.com/

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 04:52 (twenty-two years ago)

was hoping for a 101 ILM primer on her, actually, rather than a Google-a-thon. lazy, i guess. thanks anyway.

robot snare, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 05:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Hype already has a DVD... http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000067G16/002-2862952-2982431?v=glance

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 05:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Romanek is next up.

He has two videos I love (Criminal and Hurt) and that Joel Peter Witkin ripoff, but I don't know what else they'll use to flesh it out.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 05:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Sigismondi has an impressive resume. And I didn't know she is Canadian!

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 05:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd like to see DVD collectins featuring Romanek, Hammer & Tongs, and Jonas Akerlund, but whoever's next will pale in comparison with the first three DVDs, which are sheer genius.

abegrand, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 06:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I think they're working on a Jonathan Glazer one, and possibly Anton Corbijn.

sander, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 07:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Dayton and Farris?

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 08:03 (twenty-two years ago)

A Mike Mills DVD is urgent and key. I'm intrigued by his movie Thumbsucker which I think is showing at Cannes.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 08:27 (twenty-two years ago)

SHYNOLA for crying out loud

Alex & Martin and H5/Bardou-Jacquet/De Crecy would be my preferences

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 08:40 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
Not sure if this was posted somewhere else here, but Directors Label has officially announced that the next batch will be released on September 13, 2005. This time, it is Mark Romanek, Anton Corbijn, Jonathan Glazer & Stéphane Sednaoui.

http://www.directorslabel.com/

has the details of each release.

Matt Sab (Matt Sab), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Neat. I didn't realize that Glazer directed so few videos, though.

L'Histoire d'Eric H. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm totally going to get the Mark Romanek one. Jay-Z, NIN, Michael & Janet playing space tennis, and EN VOGUE!

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

which version of "one" did anton corbijn direct? weren't there like three different versions?

joseph (joseph), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm also hoping for an eventual floria sigismondi release. and am kinda surprised there's not been one for jonas akerlund yet, there'd be no shortage of material for that set

joseph (joseph), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

These look a bit boring.

mope, Tuesday, 24 May 2005 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd assume Corbijn did the black and white one with the buffalo or whatever.

Actor Sizemore fails drug test with fake penis (jingleberries), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

omg this is very exciting indeed.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 10:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Grrr, no MIke Mills.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 11:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Corbijn did the one with the band in drag. Jay-Z's "99 Problems" commentary is great. As are a lot of the band commentaries, too: Jamiroqui, Flea, Fiona Apple, New Order (!) ...

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 12:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Didn't Anton Corbjin direct "Heart Shaped Box?"

billstevejim (billstevejim), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh wait, never mind, the website finally loaded in my browser...

billstevejim (billstevejim), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Now don't tell me that 2 years from now they're gonna release a boxed set with all four of these and a bonus DVD with videos that weren't included on these 4, like they did with the first 3. I'm still upset about that, as there's pretty much no way to purchase that bonus DVD without re-purchasing the first 3. Lame.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 22:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait, tell about this bonus DVD for the first three.

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 23:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Here are the bonus DVD's contents:

Bonus 4th DVD Features
Spike Jonze
1. Y Control (uncut version) - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
2. Island In The Sun - Weezer
3. Invisible Boards (original short)
Michel Gondry
1. I Wonder - The Willowz
2. Ossamuch! - Kishu & Co. (original short)
Chris, Spike and Michel
1. Excerpts from a panel discussion.

Why the surprise at this marketing maneuver?

Re-issue ! Re-package ! Re-package !

Matt Sab (Matt Sab), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

The fact that there is still no Hype Williams one is proof that this whole series is bullshit. Hype wipes the floor (video-wise anyway) with all these guys.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

pure 100% agreement

Jedmond (Jedmond), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Hype Williams is less good and less worthy than Jonze or Gondry or Mills.

Just a city boy, born and raised in South Detroit (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:27 (twenty-one years ago)

What about BRETT RATNER?

Just a city boy, born and raised in South Detroit (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't rate Hype that much, aside from the Missy and Busta work. Great set designs and slick editing but no more than the others, and generally more derivative than the other three. He is also the only one egocentric and trite enough to put his name at the start of his videos in corny 3d letters.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Hype Williams is less good and less worthy than Jonze or Gondry or Mills.

And I am not even a FAN of any of these (except maybe Mills and a grudging appreciation of Gondry's talent).

Just a city boy, born and raised in South Detroit (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Hype's got a poorer range too - only doing party videos or dramatic story clips for rnb/rap acts. I'd like to see him branch out, but why would he bother eh?

What's he done recently anyway?

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I think there are probably only about 5 directors whose work would be worthwhile packaging in this way (and Cunningham isn't one of them).

Palm should do an anthology, I think.

Just a city boy, born and raised in South Detroit (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

"Hype Williams is less good and less worthy than Jonze or Gondry or Mills."

Bullshit. Also rent Belly fer crying out loud. You'll love it.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sure I would.

Just a city boy, born and raised in South Detroit (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll rent Belly and you can rent Paperboys.

Just a city boy, born and raised in South Detroit (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Paperboys like Newsies cuz if so fuck no.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

The only defense for not having a Hype anthology (for me anyway) - is the possible difficulty of licensing his works.

Jedmond (Jedmond), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Is this movie good? Or are you recommending it to torture me?

Fuck Hype did a video for like EVERY good song in the freakin' 90s. You guys are crazy.

http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Backstage/2220/hwvideos.html

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

He did a video for EVERY good song but they were all fucking identical!

Just a city boy, born and raised in South Detroit (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

(There's a Cash Money remix of PM Dawn?)

Just a city boy, born and raised in South Detroit (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

still, the new ones look pretty zzzzzzz

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Did Belly get ANY good reviews? I was warned off by a few.

What does it matter how good or bad the song is re director quality?

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Thank you! Yes they do!

xp

Just a city boy, born and raised in South Detroit (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

"He did a video for EVERY good song but they were all fucking identical!"

They were not (although the guy did love pretty colors.) Anyway if your template rocks WTF would you want to change it.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Goddamn that Hype filmograpgy is spectacular

Jedmond (Jedmond), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyway if your template rocks WTF would you want to change it.

Hahahaha! Right! Why go from making Yakuza Ghost to I don't know, Days of Heaven, when you can make YAKUZA GHOST TWO?

Just a city boy, born and raised in South Detroit (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Hype's video 'base sauce' ingredients:

Borrow what's left of the set from the last Romanek shoot
Book 500 models
Break the camera lens but pretend you meant it
Get cuz to knock up all-important 'A HYPE WILLIAMS PRESENTATION' titles

And bob's yer uncle before teatime.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

they reeeeeeeeallly dropped the ball with this new set. the only one worth anything is glazer.

i would take a hype williams dvd over a sednouai or romanek disc any day of the week. romanek is basically a hype williams for the rock crowd anyway, except nowhere near as visionary. you'll have to do more to convince me that williams is at the level of a jonze or a gondry, though, alex.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

"Hahahaha! Right! Why go from making Yakuza Ghost to I don't know, Days of Heaven, when you can make YAKUZA GHOST TWO?"

Fuck I'd rather watch A Better Tomorrow 2 any day of the week than watch Days of Heaven again.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Romanek is totally more visionary than Williams, considering how much the latter owes the former. And I really don't think Williams could shoot a film as aesthetically luscious as One Hour Photo, let alone promos like 'Bedtime Story', concepts an' all.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

the mark romanek formula for videomaking:

step 1. buy lots of lights
step 2. get people to put them in interesting places
step 3. shoot

(if this does not produce desired effect, consult step 4)

step 4. BUY MORE FUCKING LIGHTS

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I think that's Hype's own translation of Romanek's formula Mark.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, we almost have the full complement of posters-who-always-appear-on-promo-director-threads! Firstworldman, where are you???

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Nicole might pop up to hate on Gondry a bit more ;)

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I am still just flabbergasted by all the great songs that have a Hype video. I've not even seen a bunch of these. The guy did everything.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:57 (twenty-one years ago)

fwiw romanek is a very, very good director, i just would not use the word 'visionary' to describe him. i think he's made five very wonderful videos ("hurt", "99 problems", "the perfect drug", "are you gonna go my way" and poss. even the chili peppers' "can't stop"), but they don't gel together into a body of work for me the same way that gondry, jonze, cunningham and glazer's best do. romanek has a dp's eye and a very strong sense of composition, but is he a VISIONARY, no. "hurt" and "the perfect drug" could've have existed without floria, "are you gonna go my way" = lights + lachappelle, "99 probs" is a just very well done b&w street doc and the rhcp video was based on the works of erwin wurm. lots and lots and lots of respect for romanek, but visionary? no.

hype williams, on the other hand, is a genre unto himself, and arguably has more agency to how we see videos than gondry or jonze themselves.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

(could've = couldn't have, btw)

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I also like that Hype has produced a million more videos than any of these guys (I am a sucker for guys who churn out incredibly solid stuff month after month) and also the fact that he ACTUALLY stuck with the same artists (Missy and Busta esp.) and made a distinctive little mini-brand out of their videos. That's not easy to do without becoming stale, but I was always just as excited to see the new one of their videos as I was to see the last.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I just want to see Hype's clip for "Diary Of A Madman"

Jedmond (Jedmond), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Chris Robinson!

Zed Szetlian (Finn MacCool), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

are we just yelling out random names now, is that whats happening.

tommy lee jones!

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree that Romanek's work doesn't possess the same 'character traits' that the others works do - other than just great visual splendour, but I've been able to spot his work without realising it because of the aesthetic quality rather than ideas. If Hype made most young directors today want to use big rooms full of lights then Romanek's inspiration there is clear if indirect. My favourite video of Romanek's is Madonna's 'Bedtime Story' for the concepts and execution combined but I always thought the 'Scream' video was actually brilliant too. Nothing Hype has done has surpassed these clips for me, as fantastic as many of them are. I'm impressed and intrigued by Hype's prolificness and efficiency but disappointed by his lack of ambition in terms of broadening range and exploring outside the genre he's cocooned in - and really how much is it just down to Interscope and co. being too worried about the white film school grads wanting to make it too weird thus never going to them? But then Jonze effectively paid tribute to Hype with the 'Sky's The Limit' promo for Biggie and the respect is mutual. Hype in turn cited Cunningham on MTV and said he was blown away by 'Windowlicker', rather than offended! But I still think Romanek's got more imagination than Williams, making him more the 'visionary' in my book.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

BTW I am not arguing that Hype is more visionary than Gondry or Jonze, I am arguing that a collection of the best Hype Williams videos (which could be 3 or 4 discs judging from his discography) would be more enjoyable and possibly necessary than most of the rest of this stuff (ESP. the second set of directors who are a complete waste of time IMO.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree with you on that.

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

random names

No.

Zed Szetlian (Finn MacCool), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I am a sucker for "unpredictable, intermittent output with skyscraping highs and embarassing lows", what can I say?

I kind of appreciate it when soemone tries something different each time even if they fail spectaculary.

Alex, I feel, does not.

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I suppose you could almost say Williams took ideas and made them his own (fisheye lens etc.) in the same way that Gondry did with Svenkmayer and others.

Hype has provided a lot of entertaining videos for a lot of entertaining tracks, no doubt. I love the Craig Mack video - the monochrome so well judged (smooth yet raw). The Missy and Busta vids are pure cartoon thrills and all the more fabulous for it. But I think if you were stretching to two DVDs for Williams there'd be maybe a third of filler on there just because of the formula/frequency ratio.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

fair points steve. i just think romanek's lack of personal aesthetic and abundance of 'visual splendor' puts him closer to directors like francis lawrence, david lachappelle and joseph kahn rather than the above-mentioned group. i've never once watched a romanek video and thought "what an incredible idea"

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Aw yeah, that Craig Mack!

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Mark OTM about preference for "visual splendor".

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

More Gondry! More Jonze! Surely there's enough material + extras to at least fill up a disc at least the size of Cunningham's.

Cheek0 (Cheek0), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

(haha pls add "chris robinson" to my list of visually appealing, idea-bereft directors)

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Though I quite enjoyed One Hour Photo despite the story and the acting and the script!

xp - Why none of Gondry's commercial work on the DVD? (or was there and I am forgetting? I had to watch his reel so many times the two tend to blur)

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Both Williams and Romanek both seem off the boil recently though - perhaps their success has caught up with them. Ashanti and Audioslave videos really unspectacular. Neither are really setting standards anymore.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

There are a handful of ads directed by him on his DVD.

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah Williams clearly has slowed up. Not much activity post-2001 AFAICT.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Shynola are still the current kings for me anyway. I think they've really innovated, staggering ATD, fantastic humour, just pure genius - at least wrt animation if not film-making.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah the very obvious knock on williams is that he has no quality control, romanek to an extent as well

dunno if that follows for gondry or jonze

CERTAINLY for glazer

POSSIBLY also for cunningham, tho after screening 'rubber johnny' i'm more inclined to think he's just a scaredy cat who's clinging to that outdated warpvid aesthetic to hide the fact that he's got no idea where to go next. as IF that piece of shit six-minute 'film' took two years to make. prima donna!!

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

full-on agreeance re:shynola, they're about 2 years away from having enough material for a wonderful directors disc

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Rubber Johnny is showing here this weekend. I take it I shouldn't bother?

Steve, I didn't know that you liked Shynola but they have always seemed very "stevem" to me! :)
I haven't seen anything they've done for a few years, though.

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

(sorry that was v. vague of me, i'm trying to do forty things at once here. i meant that glazer certainly has great quality control, cunningham possibly as well, altho, etc etc)

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm here, yo! i've been staying out for fear of incurring alex's wrath about the not very nice things i have to say about hype. a guy i know works for |_ogan and has some pretty interesting thing to say about hype williams' general bullshitness. he's not exactly his own cinematographer.

i actually am not disappointed by the choices for the new series, basically because it now seems to be an archival thing. obviously when you get out of the gates with the three greatest music video directors of all time, the next three are going to leave a bit nonplussed.

as a generator of images, glazer is second to none at stark stoic classical beauty suffused with enough of the absurd/surreal to not just be another nice photographer. some images from birth are absolutely burned on my eyeballs.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

adam if you can see it easily, do it. if it requires effort and fanfare, i wouldn't bother. it's basically an aphex twin video with about 30 seconds worth of really great material. i don't know who edited rubber j, but he is the true star of the show.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

(haha pls add "chris robinson" to my list of visually appealing, idea-bereft directors)

Precisely; but I think the visual quality of Robinson's work is, however derived from Williams, of a markedly higher aesthetic quality. His attention to stock and texture of the image are more interesting to me visually than the shiny metal, fish-eye Hype (and his new work too e.g., "How We Do").

Zed Szetlian (Finn MacCool), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

re Williams' Not much activity post-2001

Not much very good work to be sure, and certainly not as ubiquitous as before, but he did do at least five videos last year.

Zed Szetlian (Finn MacCool), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

a guy i know works for |_ogan and has some pretty interesting thing to say about hype williams' general bullshitness. he's not exactly his own cinematographer.

this correlates with my own suspicions, but it might be unfair to single him out over this (were it not for the formula/frequency ratio causing everyone to get so excited).

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

a shynola collection truly is long overdue. other than brand new school there's nobody who really does motion graphics anymore that i find interesting. anyone know an audit on what these directors cost? generally speaking? any of them mentioned on this thread.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Glazer could do more really. Love the Guiness ads and Sexy Beast more than his music vids!

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Aside from motion graphics, who else is at the cutting edge right now?

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

after seeing the guiness i was terrified he wouldn't be able to sustain that level of... err... something for the length of a movie, but birth solved that. i think he's well suited for films... more than clips.

what i really, really, really, really can't wait for is gondry's new movie, The Science of Sleep. He claims it will be sort of a take off from his foo fighters video and that it will much more closely resemble his video work.

other than brand new school there's nobody who really does motion graphics anymore that i find interesting

I rate H5 just as much, the French duo responsible for Royksopp's 'Remind Me' and Goldfrapp's 'Twist' amongst many other greats. Definitely up there with Shynola. I also rate Pleix ('Cish Cash') and Alex & Martin ('Seven Nation Army'), also both French.

The best new promo director in Britain is Dougal Wilson (Dizzee's 'Dream', Streets 'Fit But You Know It' etc.).

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

and Jonas Ordell ('Take Me Out', 'Strict Machine') is quite the motion-graphics auteur.

We tried to use Blue Source all the time after they did that Dirty Vegas video. I thought it was zzzzzzzzz

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

pleix is fantastic, as is brand new school. good calls dude.

also, stevem TOTALLY on the money about dougal wilson, the guy is fucking incredible, he did this one commercial for boots that was totally astonishing

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Lynn Fox do some great stuff.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't know who else is cutting edge. bjork normally kinda leads the way, but while i was impressed with lynn fox's work technically, it didn't really do much for me aesthetically and certainly did make me feel anything. i don't think i've seen the other one (not the jonze cat one, the other one).
it seems like everyone's kind of still catching up to the leaders of the whole thing from 5 or so years ago, or just making uninteresting little commercial things for people like jessica simpson. i guess the video fro radiohead's 'there there' was pretty good. i forget who did it though.
even res magazine's monthly dvd hasn't really shown me anything amazing in a while now. certainly not heralding the death of the medium, but somebody's gotta either push things forward or start telling really great stories with truly original visuals again.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

blue source are incredible commercial directors, adam, but i don't rate their vids as much

lynnfox are animation gods, agreed

also really dig psyop and boutique nyc studio tronic

I was gonna mention Psy-Op!

It's weird that there aren't more prominent Japanese animators in the music video/advert field, in the West at least. Are they all wrapped up in anime and games over there?

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

there are directors who are compositing spots for high-profile clients on their laptops in aftereffects! obviously everything gets scrubbed up in post, but that's still a pretty incredible development.

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 18:06 (twenty-one years ago)

my personal dream Sophie Muller DVD, based just one the ones I've seen from this videography. They should pick someone who highlights the artist for a change, rather than short films that rarely sell the band or song.

Eurythmics - I Need A Man
Shakespear's Sister - Stay
Annie Lennox - Walking On Broken Glass
Hole - Miss World
Cure - The 13th
Maxwell - Luxury: Cococure
Rufus Wainwright - April Fools
Sparklehorse - Pig
Beth Orton - Central Reservation
PJ Harvey - Good Fortune
Nelly Furtado - Turn Off The Lights
No Doubt - Underneath It All
Vanessa Carlton - White Houses
Maroon 5 - She Will Be Loved
Killers - Mr. Brightside

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

You're funny, Anthony.

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 18:08 (twenty-one years ago)

dude I just think the point of videos is to make the SINGER look good, not the director. But then if movies are more about "what watch I can do" than "watch what my actors are doing" than hey, I suppose you could assign the same mentality to videos.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 18:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I see what you are saying, but I suppose I am of that mentality.

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

well... videos aren't supposed to do any particular thing. i think there's a good reason someone like, say, dilly gent picks a lot of the directors she picks for the artists she represents because it's working and the artists and directors are satisfied with the end result. most musicians are terrible actors. that's why lyrics so often sound so stupid.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 18:19 (twenty-one years ago)

videos are ads for the song and artist. Sophie Muller makes memorable short films that make the artist in question look great. A lot of these directors make videos that could be formed around ANY artist. One reason I prefer "Undone" to the "Buddy Holly" video is that the former actually tells us something about Weezer as opposed to some admittedly amusing Forrest Gump-ian breakthrough in digital technology.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 18:25 (twenty-one years ago)

You are right in that I would like to see robot Nelly Furtados making out.

Otherwise, no.

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll admit her videos don't provide you that necessary robotic screen from which to safely witness sensuality.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude!

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I've seen girls kiss! Even kissed a few myself!

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

then why can't you deal with or celebrate humanity in music videos? While are only the glossiest, most gimmicky worth celebrating?

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Who here is not celebrating humanity?

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

well, if you're simply not moved (and obviously i don't mean some grand sweeping emotional epiphany of thought) by the concept/story, then that's that. i think what you're saying is that you like sophie muller's aesthetic. i really like her work for sparklehorse, so i'm not arguing about that. i think that most of these directors are making videos that are as much about the artist as the lyrics the artists write are about the music, if that makes any sense.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

anybody who chortles at the idea Sophie Muller deserves a DVD while championing Chris Cunningham.

x-post

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Why can't humanity be technicolor? oblong? stop motion?

Also why do we watch these videos if not to celebrate style?

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

anybody who chortles at the idea Sophie Muller deserves a DVD while championing Chris Cunningham.

I don't know if you are talking about me or generalizing, but I don't "champion: Chris Cunningham (see above) nor "chortle" at Sophie Muller. Actually, I could give or take either of them, but I am merely expressing a preference.

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

ok so how exactly was I "funny" upthread if you weren't laughing at the notion of her DVD?

That was just harmless, indirect banter!

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

your fear of undiluted feminine sensuality on film

I will seek professional help immediately!

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

i think that there's a lot of instance of style which makes me feel something, so there's plenty of humanity (or substance) in style. i will champion chris cunningham, even though i'm not a fan of all of his work. i think the bjork video is one of the best examples of humanity (yes, even with robots) in a music video. the aphex twin videos are hilarious, so there's that. his portishead video is simple, but somehow very sad too. what is your problem with him?

firstworldman (firstworldman), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I like a few of his videos (definitely Bjork), he's just a bit one-note maybe?

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I think he's alright but I find him less affecting than Muller. I just wonder what mentality makes him worthy of acclaim and not Muller as a great video director, aside from that kind of digital lookatme flashiness techfilm boys get off on and the hip artists who work with him.

Haha I forgot about the whole Adam Levine envy thing. You're off the hook, YGS.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I definitely agree that the culture of appreciation in promo culture is one where ideas are currency, and the definition of "ideas" in this ontext is totally arbitrary. I will enjoy an artist-focused video over a tricksy one if the artist is interesting visually or if there is some unique element of performance, but there is also a tremendous feeling I get from seeing something very fresh, and promos seem to be a good vehicle for that.

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

jesus anthony chill dude

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Geez, look at the explosion of posts I (re-)started... Good thing I didn't subscribe to this thread.

To track back...
It is possible the reason Hype Williams is not in the 2nd series of the Directors Label is that

http://www.palmpictures.com/videos/hypewilliamsthevideos.html

they already released a compilation of his videos (before the directors label stuff started).

Matt Sab (Matt Sab), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I also think that, as far as this thread goes, the audience for a Sophie Muller DVD would be very different to, say, that for a Gondry DVD.

xp-it's okay! he's chilled! We've cracked open some theoretical sparks and we are totally broing down now!

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

they already released a compilation of his videos (before the directors label stuff started).

aha!

I think Anthony is used to defending himself and his tastes against the hateful barbs of ILMers, but there are is a place for shades of grey on this thread, I swear!

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 19:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I've drunk so much coffee, I can't stop posting!

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

i think it's a good note though. i think that he'll show a lot more range when he makes a feature. when i watched all of his videos at once i found myself thinking, "what did i find so amazing? this is kind of like the video equivalent of an yngwie malmsteen guitar solo." but when i read interviews with him and he talks about the place where the ideas and images come from it makes a lot more sense.
he said once that he feared sitting on the toilet because he couldn't help but imagine all the things that were happening in him to facilitate his shitting. maybe there's something wrong with me, but i can relate to something in that that makes his videos more personal.

xpost

firstworldman (firstworldman), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm quite pleased to learn finally that it was Sophie Muller who directed the wonderfully charming "White Houses" clip for Ms. Carlton. She was smart not to literalize the song's narrative but instead communicate the introspective nostalgia of the lyrics via the doppelganger device; Carlton sings while watching her alternately graceful and struggled dance routine. I'd totally buy a Muller or Romanek comp.

theodore fogelsanger (herbert hebert), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Out of the three directors series dvds, Cunningham's work seemed to display the most dated late 90s-ness. People who anticipate any narrative film he might direct haven't seen the dialogue portions of the Squarepusher video insane asylum set video. The humane technology of Bjork's "All is Full of Love" remains beautiful though even if it simultaneously transcends and reveals the limitations of his overall aesthetic.

theodore fogelsanger (herbert hebert), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

what limitations were revealed in that video? i tried to osmisis jones through the tv when i first saw it.
and yeah the dialogue is shitty in that video. and i am nervous that his first movie is based on a comic book...

firstworldman (firstworldman), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

It seems that he can really only fetishize body-technology. Despite the fact that he can do this extremely well, and incorporate special effects more effectively than most Hollywood spectacles (though this could also be said to be a asset Gondry posesses to a greater degree), their seems to be as little diversity in Cunningham's entire videography as in Matt Mahurin's countless videos shot through artfully soft-darkened lenses.

theodore fogelsanger (herbert hebert), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

That is interesting.

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah I had no idea Muller did "White Houses" either until I saw that videography. Makes sense in hindsight, though it wasn't as obvious as "Mr. Brightside" or "She Will Be Loved."

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

haha god a Matt Mahurin DVD would be hysterical

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

"Mr Brightside" and "She Will Be Loved" both feature the sunset-gold saturated color scheme that one could once depend on as Muller's signature. I'm happy to see that she's been able to develop a versatility beyond acheiving that specific "look".

theodore fogelsanger (herbert hebert), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish I had cable! :(

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

According to that videography she made videos for Come. Muller filming Thalia Zedek!! I'd kill to see those.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes!

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Muller's work doesn't do a huge amount for me because it's so human/performer orientated and I tend to find this less interesting/inspiring i.e. videos ABOUT the song fall a bit flat with me, if there's nothing else there to latch onto. See also Dawn Shadforth. Obv. they're v talented directors. The only video I really like on Anthony's list is 'Good Fortune' but that's more to do with the song I think. Her vid for Supergrass 'Mary' stood out tho, for the gore at least. It's just if you were going to pick her than why not Shadforth or Nigel Dick or countless other directors big on artist spotlight/performance and literary takes?

Now where the hell is Andrea Giacobbe? (Garbage 'Pushit', Death In Vegas 'Dirt')

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

literal not literary!

I posted on another music vid thread defending FLoria Sigusmondi's clip for Sigur Ros 'Untitled' (only single from ()?). Is one of the few videos from this decade I really love that doesn't use computer effects at all, actually made me tear up, though some may find it a bit 'corny'?

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

In a high school class I teach, I assign "Taste Wars." Students sample four video directors (the Directors Label guys and Hype Williams) and then claim and celebrate one over the others. Thanks to the dazzling, massive talent of the filmmakers, the assignment is a blast. Alas, the Hype DVD is thin in comparison (I once threw in Missy's "Work It" and pretended it was a Williams effort just to make the contest more fair. I still feel bad about that.). He definitely needs a better disk.

Just so you know, Jonze and Gondry usually win as overall artistes but Williams' trippy Busta vid "Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See" is always the landslide individual winner.

Romanek's "Hurt" is a classroom fave as well, so I'm excited we're finally getting another round of compilations.

great muller video I forgot for hypothetical DVD: Blur, "Song 2"

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

also: Bjork, "Venus As A Boy"

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 23:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I think my favorite Muller clip is The Strokes "The End Has No End." The visual story she tells of a man's life, juxtaposed wih what he watches on tv throughout the living of it, adds a thematic weight to the song that I don't believe was previously there. The short story neatly suggests that narrative structure/narrative closure in the fictions of the media we're exposed to leads to misguided expectations of such closure in real life. Interseresed, of course, with a performance set piece that serves as an intriguing riff on the band's identity.

theodore fogelsanger (herbert hebert), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 00:27 (twenty-one years ago)

"they already released a compilation of his videos (before the directors label stuff started)."

Yeah, but it's a totally average compilation with only 10 videos on it and some lame interview! Hype deserves better!

wtf, I pointed out in the first handful or responses to this thread that Hype Williams has his own DVD collection apart from this series and then a year later there's a long stupid debate about Hype vs. other directors.

Jimmy Mod Is Sick of Being The Best At Everything (ModJ), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:23 (twenty years ago)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

What sites can I go to for watching new videos?

(besides the obvious, mark)

Felix Leiter (nordicskilla), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:30 (twenty years ago)

winamp's videos archives is also tremendous.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

boardsmag.com/screeningroom/musicvideos/1772/

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)

The only good grime videos I've seen are "I Luv U", "Dream", and "Ps and Qs" (a real low key charmer, that one). Oh, and "Wot Do You Call It?"! That is wicked hahaha!

Felix Leiter (nordicskilla), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:34 (twenty years ago)

ill post the roisin and roll deep so you can see them.

xpost adam you forgot pow!

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:38 (twenty years ago)

The "Typical Me" video is good. So is the original "When I'm Ere" (not the terrible XXX version.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:39 (twenty years ago)

Colonel Blimp again!

Felix Leiter (nordicskilla), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

Both "Hype Hype" videos are terrible unfortunately.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

Alex, I have your Kano STICKER for you! I will give i to you at lunch.

(Do Americans say STICKER? Or DECAL, or something?)

Felix Leiter (nordicskilla), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

the guy who runs colonel blimp is rad. he loves his grime, and told me scandalous tings about sov.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

Felix Leiter (nordicskilla), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

Felix Leiter (nordicskilla), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

Was she a pre-teen slut like Chr1st1na r1cc1?

Felix Leiter (nordicskilla), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

its more about what she is than what she was.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:48 (twenty years ago)

fincher was going to do MI:3!!! now he's not :(

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

fincher spent a looooooooong time trying to get b3nj@m1n butt0n off the ground, but no studio would bite. the reason? he wouldn't do it for a budget of less than $150m!!

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:51 (twenty years ago)

what's that movie?

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:52 (twenty years ago)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0421715/

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:54 (twenty years ago)

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 14 July 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

I recall it being originally announced that the Hype Williams DVD was part of the inspiration for beginning this series. There are a lot of great video directors besides Hype who deserve a Directors Label DVD. I'm sure the people behind the series haven't forgotten him, or Jonas Akerlund, or Hammer & Tongs, or Dayton & Ferris, Evan Bernard, Paul Hunter, Jake Scott, Samuel Bayer, Mike Mills, blah blah blah and so on.

probably xpost, I was too lazy to read through the whole thing

billstevejim (billstevejim), Friday, 15 July 2005 03:51 (twenty years ago)

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 17:12 (twenty years ago)

haha jermaine i thought that was a dis for a second

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 17:32 (twenty years ago)

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 17:36 (twenty years ago)
