for once I'd love to see a funk/hip-hop/R&B/whatever bill where there's one token indie noise band and not the other way around

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 22:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I really like that Measles Mumps Rubella single and they are good live

Sonny A. (Keiko), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

$20 to the asshole who goes up to Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings and calls them "token" to their faces.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

$20 to the asshole who deliberately misses the point.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

What little I've heard of White Magic was great. Dunno who the heck the rest of those folks are though...

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

$20 to the editor imprecise with language to the point of racial insensitivity (not to mention insulting a show that a friend of mine is promoting).

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

DO NOT FEED THE TROLL

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks Joel !

Russ, Tuesday, 18 May 2004 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't feed Matos. He's had enough to eat

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

.

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

hahaha you know I got your back Russ dude. But I like Matos too, just think he's wrong on this one.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

DO NOT ENCOURAGE THE TROLL

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

do not call an otherwise good dude a troll.

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

yikes! what the fuck is that?!?

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

you can be an otherwise good guy and also be a thread troll, this has been proven by science.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

btw, since she already came up in this thread, CAT POWER is playing our next free outdoor show on 6/26, with DOUBLE LEOPARDS, 2/5 BZ (dance/psych from Istanbul), SAPAT _or_ VALLEY OF ASHES (same group, different focus), and DJ BRIAN TURNER (music director of WFMU)

Russ, Tuesday, 18 May 2004 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

no SB??!?

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

no SB??!?

we already played there last year.
besides, I wouldn't want to book myself at an event like this.
class-less.

Russ, Tuesday, 18 May 2004 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

"don't insult my friend" = lamest fucking response evah. also, I'm curious--if I call Thievery Corporation the tokens for that show I posted, which they are, am I being racially insensitive, too?

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 23:01 (twenty-one years ago)

heh I thought you meant the Roots were the tokens!

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

and I do think it's lame to insult someone who's actually doing something! If Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings hadn't been booked, would you be complaining that they hadn't?

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

both of them are! I mean, come on! it's an all indie-rock bill with a token rap artist and a token dance act. (unless you count the Postal Service, which I don't.)
anyway, the point is that this kind of bill--indie rock indie rock indie rock + one non-indie thing that indie rock kids like--is really commonplace. pointing that out /= complaining. for god's sake, the Dap-Kings are the only band on there I'd want to see!

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 23:05 (twenty-one years ago)

also on a personal tip I think this Patrin-esque accusation is kinda beneath you.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 23:05 (twenty-one years ago)

well then state that it's commonplace, not that they're tokens.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

but yeah, I forgot that posting to a public message board was a guarantor that all responses will be sweetness and light. thanks for the reminder.

xpost: how is pointing out the obvious an accusation?

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 23:07 (twenty-one years ago)

tokenism is commonplace! I mean, earth to Joel!

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 23:07 (twenty-one years ago)

WOE IS MATOS

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 23:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I think, and have argued previously, that use of the word "token" when applied to stuff like this is unnecessarily incendiary.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 23:10 (twenty-one years ago)

you have argued this, yes. and I should've figured I'd end up arguing about this with you anyway because I saw the thread title and figured it was posted by someone you knew.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 23:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm pretty psyched to see all of the bands on the bill, because hey I like a lot of different kinds of music.

Should I be pissed that only a couple of people danced when I spun funk records last Saturday? Should I call them tokenists? Or should I just be happy that some people danced?

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 23:18 (twenty-one years ago)

T/S: "Indie VS. Non-Indie" vs. "White VS. Black"

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 23:20 (twenty-one years ago)

i bet you're excited to go to the show afterwards, too, right? yay!

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 23:20 (twenty-one years ago)

omg btw dean some indie bands have non-white people in them omg.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 23:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Joel, if you're looking for a retraction or apology for my initial post, you're not going to get it. Sorry, dude.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 23:21 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah lauren tho I have no freakin' idea who those bands are aside from sightings. are you booking/promoting it? you should hire me to dj, the Tommy's guys love me.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not looking for a retraction or an apology, I'm just looking for some sense.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost: hstencil do you like repeating people's points for them? because near as I can tell that's EXACTLY what dean was saying

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

TS: "agreeing" vs. "repeating"

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 23:24 (twenty-one years ago)

well, when yr in attack mode it's hard to tell the difference sometimes.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 23:24 (twenty-one years ago)

omg btw dean some indie bands have non-white people in them omg.

Yeah, you're correct. They have TOKEN non-white people in them!

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

TS: "attacking" vs. "defending"

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 23:26 (twenty-one years ago)

har har. not what I was saying at all, if that's where you're going w/this.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 23:26 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost--that was to dean.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 23:27 (twenty-one years ago)

exactly why more precise language is needed.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 23:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I have no freakin' idea who those bands are aside from sightings

i'm booking/promoting w/ todd p. free blood are two members of !!! along with another singer. bass, busted synth, male/female vocals. they sound like sexual harrassment. i haven't heard megaweapon - the zum records guy from sf doing a solo thing.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 23:29 (twenty-one years ago)

if they sound like Sexual Harrassment my initial point is upended.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 23:30 (twenty-one years ago)

that's a completely different show, Matos! WTF?!?

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, sorry! you're right. I thought you were still on the 5/22 outdoor thing. nevermind then.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 23:33 (twenty-one years ago)

like "if i gave you a party," but a bit gigglier.

xpost - yes, but let's just all chill out. anyone want a mike's hard iced tea? i have 3 in the fridge.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 23:33 (twenty-one years ago)

if they sound like that, Lauren, I really wanna hear it bad.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 23:34 (twenty-one years ago)

dude lauren I want some quaaludes.

and serious, about the djing - this bald Polish guy in shorts was all like "I am fifty years old! Thank you for taking me down memory lane! Yes! Planet Rock! You rock, buddy!" when I played "Planet Rock." Tommy's is my new favorite bar.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 23:35 (twenty-one years ago)

haha I have percocets and vicodin, hstencil! I just had a root canal, so . . .

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 23:36 (twenty-one years ago)

they're the tits. i want to put out a single, but !!! are busy kids these days.

xpost - hahahaha! that is RAD!

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 23:36 (twenty-one years ago)

aw fuck let's throw on "Planet Rock" and go down memory lane!

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 23:36 (twenty-one years ago)

root canals are not quite so rad, I'm afraid. prescription drugs, however . . .

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 23:37 (twenty-one years ago)

oh fuck sorry, thought you were addressing me. I'll bow out of this now.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 23:37 (twenty-one years ago)

y'know the funny thing was (although maybe not surprising) that the only time anybody of the indie persuasion danced last Saturday was when I was playing funk. Nobody danced to rock, or indie stuff, or the techno I played, except for said bald Polish dude in shorts, who high-fived me repeatedly.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 23:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn. That's some good publicity for this show as far as ILX goes. Russ, you must make sure that future lineups create this much silly animosity. Good work.

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 23:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I listened to the Measles, Mumps, Rubella CD single on Troubleman yesterday at the record store. Probably heard less than half of it, but I wasn't inspired to buy it. Did I miss something?

Tim Ellison, Tuesday, 18 May 2004 23:43 (twenty-one years ago)

it sure as hell got more posts than the one about the show I was djing at. : (

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 23:43 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www-2.cs.cmu.edu/afs/cs.cmu.edu/user/kraut/www/RKraut.site.files/gallery/sad-face.jpg

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 23:45 (twenty-one years ago)

man I really didn't need to see that picture again.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 23:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Tim, the MMR song really really had to sneak up on me. My roommate played it constantly for a month as I ignored it, then one day it just clicked. Listening to a clip from it might not have helped either, it's kind of "epic" in the way it builds. I think their vocalist is really great/entertaining - all the non-guitardrumsbass noise on the track is from his voice running through a delay pedal, which is especially cool to watch live.

Sonny A. (Keiko), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 23:51 (twenty-one years ago)

$20 for the percocets

Russ, Wednesday, 19 May 2004 00:07 (twenty-one years ago)

$15 and we have a deal.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 00:08 (twenty-one years ago)

haha

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 00:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Measels Mumps Rubella are a really fantastic live band. Tight, funky, noisy, did I say funky? Post-punk funk? I suppose so. Speaking of, Gabe Andruzzi and I will be DJing the Tommy's show. I'll bring Planet Rock for you Joel. This past friday after everyone left the party I was DJing I did a whole electro/bass megamix, something like 20 records in 3 minutes, starting with Planet Rock. Maybe I'll do that again in between bands.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 00:23 (twenty-one years ago)

dan, you will not do that.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 00:24 (twenty-one years ago)

: ( dang I was hoping I'd be asked. Oh well.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 00:29 (twenty-one years ago)

joel, you know i looooooooove you and your hott records. we're just switching things a bit.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 00:30 (twenty-one years ago)

now go talk about soy bombs or whatever and stop complaining.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 00:31 (twenty-one years ago)

hahaha I'm in guilt-trip-lauren mode. And that freakin' Dan Selzer dude djs EVERY weekend. Doesn't he ever get tired?

(of course jus' kiddin' Dan. I was really psyched that you came by on Saturday.)

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 00:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Measels Mumps Rubella are indeed a fantastic live band. I saw them open for Matthew Dear a few months back, and well, Matthew should have opened for them. He was boooooring compared to them.

Russ, do you have any additional outdoor shows scheduled for July or August?

Jeff Sumner (Jeff Sumner), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 00:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Jeff - Ted Leo, The Natural History, and others tbc are playing on July 24th

to give credit where credit is due - Todd Patrick curated the 5/22 show, I curated the 6/26 show, and ERMP as a whole is working on 7/24.

Russ, Wednesday, 19 May 2004 00:40 (twenty-one years ago)

You should print out this thread for Todd. He'll be pleased.

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 00:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I already sent Todd a link.

I think it's a cool line-up.
I've only seen 2 of these bands before (and I liked them), but I've been wanting to see the others...

Russ, Wednesday, 19 May 2004 01:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Measles Mumps Rubella are fantastic if you've never heard circa 1981 punk-funk. If you have, then they are still entertaining but not exactly "fantastic." And old curmudgeon me does like some new punk-funk...

I'm with Matos on wanting to see an eclectic bill with more than 1 funk act.

Steve Kiviat (Steve K), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 02:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Bravo to schizo bills - Russ. Most shows 'round town you *know* why so-and-so is opening for so-and-so, right? Seeing old NY Rocker papers used to blow my mind, like 1980 ads for the Feelies with Sun Ra and DNA together. I wondered if people moaned about the token jazz.

The SB are gonna open for the Tubes at BB King's, right?

Brian Turner (btwfmu), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 02:48 (twenty-one years ago)

haha "schizo"

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 03:01 (twenty-one years ago)

wait, steve, did I say they were a fantastic live band? That must've been a type because I've definately heard 1981 punk-funk. I've heard it so much I have 2 copies of Medium Medium's The Glitterhouse.

And Lauren. I will indeed play said set. Trust me, you'd rather I do it between bands when everyone is outside smoking then after bands when you're hoping people will stick around and dance or something like that. It's good and fun and involves JJ Fad and the Unknown DJ, good times for all.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 04:50 (twenty-one years ago)

that's "typo".

I made a typo spelling the word typo.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 04:52 (twenty-one years ago)

dude Dan be prepared for multiple high-fives from the "Planet Rock" guy.

QUOTATIONS FROM SMARTY JONES (hstencil), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 04:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll tell him I can't high-five him because I'm too busy speed-beatmatching and cutting.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 04:59 (twenty-one years ago)

dude I think you just hate the Poles.

QUOTATIONS FROM A PLANET ROCK FAN (hstencil), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 05:05 (twenty-one years ago)

you kidding? you should've seen me in Krakow! I fell in love 1,000 times. I'm part polish as well.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 05:11 (twenty-one years ago)

we'll see how well you handle the token Pole in a room full of indie rockers.

QUOTATIONS FROM PLANET TOKENISM (hstencil), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 05:13 (twenty-one years ago)

QUOTATIONS FROM TIME WARNER CABLE (hstencil), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Re: Blood on The Walls.

I mean white clogs is one thing, but getting into a fairly new Volvo (I think it was a volvo??) station wagon, kinda defeats the idea of his band Name.

I'm just sayin.

ddb, Wednesday, 19 May 2004 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

You can take him!!!!!

perhaps, but courtney would kick his ass for sure.

i do like blood on the wall, volvo or no volvo.

QUOTATIONS FROM DUDE I MET HER A COUPLE TIMES (hstencil), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Steve, I liked MMR because they DID remind me of 1981-era punk-funk, namely the Pop Group and early PiL.

No, he should be driving an Abrams tank.

Is anyone out there a gay or bisexual skater ? I`m a rollerblader and I haven`t yet met another rollerblader or skateboarder who shows any signs of being gay or bisexual. Would love someone to prove me wrong, I can`t be the only one. maybe most gay guys aren`t into extreme sports ?

Decked out in rainbow costumes, members of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender communities attended Rainbow Skate Night on Wednesday as part of 91.7FM-KOOP Radio's second annual Summer Fruit Festival.

The Fruit Festival is organized by KOOP Radio every year during Gay Pride Month to raise money for the station and to commemorate the Stonewall Riots, which are considered the beginning of the of the gay liberation movement. The riots occurred in response to a police raid on a New York gay bar in 1969.

The festival began Sunday with a viewing of locally produced short films and will end next Sunday with a full day of GLBT radio programming. Lonny Stern, Summer Fruit Festival events coordinator and KOOP employee, said the radio station initially only dedicated one full day of radio programming to commemorate the riots, but decided to organize events two years ago. KOOP Radio is the only station in Austin that regularly airs programming targeted at the GLBT community.

"We felt like radio was one thing, but wanted to extend it to events," Stern said.

Stern teamed up with Rainbow Skate Night organizer Don Baker to make Skate Night a part of the Summer Fruit Festival.

Baker said Skate Night is held at Skate World Northwest on Anderson Mill Road twice a month in order to raise money for various charities.

"Skate Night is a gay/lesbian social event," Baker said. "It's just like when you were a kid, running around in circles."
