That was the third issue of Mojo I bought, the one with her on the cover. Anyone else get that one? That's all I have - 3 Mojo's.

Bimble (bimble), Saturday, 22 May 2004 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

that was the first issue of mojo I ever bought.

at this point whatever she finally releases will be subject to so much scrutiny and criticism I almost hope she doesn't put anything out. it's been too long gestating, it might sound stillborn.

kyle (akmonday), Saturday, 22 May 2004 22:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Well,
-- Sweet Jesus

P'haps we should ask God, really?

*goes and puts the query on the God thread on ILE*

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Sunday, 23 May 2004 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

She cried when she'd heard Killing Joke broke up, you know.*

* sorry, I'm obligated by oath to bring this up on every Kate Bush thread.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 23 May 2004 16:34 (twenty-one years ago)

She CRIED, Alex, becuse the VERY THOUGHT of KILLING JOKE MADE her cry.

..., Sunday, 23 May 2004 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

You wish.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 23 May 2004 16:41 (twenty-one years ago)

And what of Sweet Jesus?

davey, Sunday, 23 May 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

"Sweet Jesus" came out of me leaving my Philosophy class just before I thought of Kate...we talked about Christianity...not me and Kate, of course. Although I'm sure that would be an interesting conversation. She's probably answer it in song ("Sat In Your Lap" or something)...

Erick H (Erick H), Sunday, 23 May 2004 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

She cried when she'd heard Killing Joke broke up, you know.*

* sorry, I'm obligated by oath to bring this up on every Kate Bush thread.

why limit it to Kate bush threads?

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 23 May 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Who says he does? I believe there was a Killing Joke thread once...

mark grout (mark grout), Sunday, 23 May 2004 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard that she was recording strings for the new album a few months ago, it could have been at Abbey Road.

mentalist (mentalist), Monday, 24 May 2004 02:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, strings, that's what it was. I honestly didn't get the impression she'd really started working on the album until after her son had been born and grown some, so it's not like she's been working on it every year since 1993. If that were the case, yes, I would worry about it being "stillborn"! Ah hell, I can't say she's perfect. It could certainly be a disappointment. But just to know she came back would almost be enough, somehow. To feel that she's still alive is even something in itself. I really like that picture of her in the Mojo issue where she's washing dishes ("washing up" as they say over there). She looks so genuine, there, so real.

Yes but we are still in the realm of rumour - those websites haven't been updated for awhile - so I will shut myself and my enthusiasm up right now and just get back into "resigned" mode where I belong.

She cried when KJ broke up. HA ha ha! Yeah right! Reminds me of an English teacher I had who once told the class she was so easily provoked to cry that she cried when a new Safeway opened up!

Bimble (bimble), Monday, 24 May 2004 03:54 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't know, the red shoes was pretty bad.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Monday, 24 May 2004 04:40 (twenty-one years ago)

That was probably why, the 'pause'.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 24 May 2004 07:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Unlikely though it may seem, Kate really is / was something of a Killing Joke fan - Youth even played bass on and produced one of her albums IIRC.

Anyway, I see her occasionally in my local branch of Savacentre, so next time I do, I'll ask her how the next album's coming along, OK?

Of course it's possible that I won't see her because, like a lot of people, she may be avoiding the place for the next few months however, 'cos they're busy refurbishing the store so it's complete chaos in there at the moment....

While we're on the subject of supermarkets 'though - surely the opening of a new Safeway should be a cause for great happiness and rejoicing rather than sadness?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 24 May 2004 09:16 (twenty-one years ago)

tears of sorrow, tears of joy
come all at once for the sweetest boy
but that's the price that he must pay
to learn that there's a new safeway..

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 24 May 2004 09:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm all lost in the supermarket
I can no longer shop happily
Came in here for the special offer
A guaranteed personality....

I've been waitin' in the supermarket
Standin' in line with the beans (ketchup)....

But don't worry
Honey don't worry
This is just a fairytale
Happening in the supermarket....

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 24 May 2004 09:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Put the cheddar in your pocket,
Put the rest under your jacket,
Talk to the cashier,
Won't suspect
And if he does....

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Thursday, 18 November 2004 22:52 (twenty years ago)

spring 2005, so they say.

i really wonder what it will be like, and how it will be received.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 18 November 2004 22:55 (twenty years ago)

Unlikely though it may seem, Kate really is / was something of a Killing Joke fan

Well, there is a reason I own a Killing Joke 7-inch. Alex may guess at which.

OleM (OleM), Thursday, 18 November 2004 23:33 (twenty years ago)

Is it their cover of "Running Up That Hill?"

Wait, only Alex may guess.

Nevermind then.

martin m. (mushrush), Thursday, 18 November 2004 23:34 (twenty years ago)

Oh you, or anyone else, may too of course marSomeone covered that??? They mad?

OleM (OleM), Thursday, 18 November 2004 23:37 (twenty years ago)

Didn't placebo cover it too?

god made dirt and dirt bust ass (papa november), Friday, 19 November 2004 00:00 (twenty years ago)

Well, considering the options, it's probably a better bet than "James and the Cold Gun"...

OleM (OleM), Friday, 19 November 2004 00:01 (twenty years ago)

But anyway, the important q is
Sweet Jesus, when will Kate Bush release another album?

(and yes, red shoes was meh)

OleM (OleM), Friday, 19 November 2004 00:03 (twenty years ago)

I don't think Killing Joke covered it... I was making a joke.

Beats me about Placebo, but then I dunno much about that band because, just like their name, they do nothing for me.

I'll be here all week, folks.

But anyway, the important q is
Sweet Jesus, when will Kate Bush release another album?

To be honest I think the rubberband has actually snapped and the laws of physics have her continuing in one direction and not coming back.

martin m. (mushrush), Friday, 19 November 2004 00:04 (twenty years ago)

Aw. What's that supposed to mean? You think she's mad, too unstable? Kicking in chairs and knocking down tables? Or something serious?

OleM (OleM), Friday, 19 November 2004 00:08 (twenty years ago)

Besides, last we heard, she was a Rubberband Girl!

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Friday, 19 November 2004 02:21 (twenty years ago)

March, next year. Apparently.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 19 November 2004 13:27 (twenty years ago)

I expect Savacentre will be getting back to something approaching normality by then too.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 19 November 2004 13:50 (twenty years ago)

Maybe she'll do an in-store performance there? A little shopping, a little Kate Bush?

I thought the Red Shoes as an album had a lot going for it next to the surprisingly mediocre Sensual World.

I had forgotten about Mark Grout's poetry showing up here way before I'd seen it on another thread. I wish there was some way to just put "Mark Grout" and "poetry" into the search function and wallah...

Killing Joke doing any Kate Bush song would really be something to behold, I think.

Bimble (bimble), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 07:54 (twenty years ago)

My poetry? now you have got me. (Scans up). Oh I nicked it from Scritti. (faithless. Cracking 12" single. Go find!)

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 09:06 (twenty years ago)

I was talking to some of Amber's friends' mums a while ago (Note wonderful apostrophe use there) about Amber's love for Kate Bush (and secondhand vinyl from chaarity shops, and one mentioned that they see her quite often at their local 'stretch and grow' type sessions which they take their kids too. I did wonder, she I would have thought could probably do classes like that herself for the kids, even just her own. But then, it's quite reassuring that she's not too precious to get the job done for her.

The author of the quoted Sky exclusive is a "Tizzer", meaning s/he writes "it's" when s/he should say "its". Possibly very unfair of me but I do tend to mistrust a source when bad grammar is in evidence.

Look we don't have a release date. We don't have a title. We have NOTHING. Next thing you know they will say it is coming in Spring 2007. Can we please leave this thread to lie like a sleeping dog until we actually have some concrete evidence? Thanks.

When will Kate Bush release another album, you say?

How about NOW???

KATE BUSH

New Single & Album

EMI Records is proud to announce the release of the brand new studio album by Kate Bush.

The double album entitled 'Aerial' will be released worldwide on November 7th (Nov 8th in USA).

The first single 'King Of The Mountain' precedes the album on October 24th.

Both the single and album are produced by Kate Bush.

How d'you like them apples?

The title 'King of the Mountain' is sort of thematically linked to 'Running Up That Hill' innit?

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 09:03 (twenty years ago)

second single is called "decent days and nights" apparently.

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 09:13 (twenty years ago)

I like the title, it's just the sudden cold hard release date that's giving me butterflies.

I Ain't No Addict, Whoever Heard of a Junkie as Old as Me? (noodle vague), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 09:16 (twenty years ago)

In the sixties Lulu recorded a song called "Dreary Days And Nights." The title was more interesting than the song.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 09:25 (twenty years ago)

(Didn't, errr, someone terrible have a song called 'Lazy Days and Crazy Nights'?)

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 09:32 (twenty years ago)

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 10:36 (twenty years ago)

peter gabriel had a 12-year hiatus between "us" and "up". if you define hiatus as doing an entire movie soundtrack, the soundtrack to the millennium dome show, songs for numerous other movies, the title theme of a tv series, and a live double album and video. and two interactive cd-rom thingies.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Thursday, 1 September 2005 18:54 (twenty years ago)

No, EMI have made an announcement - there would be a marketing plan in place to action re: pre christmas market.

Already the PR announcement has generated mainstream awareness BBC News, The Mirror, even Alan Brazil on TalkSport mentioned it this morning etc

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 1 September 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

I wouldn't worry about Pitchfork their trying to be clever music news writing style is pathetic.

People just want the facts - not wanky wordy wishy-washy bullshit.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 1 September 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

November 8th! And it's a double album. I'm peeing me britches.

Just got some DVD-R's full of her videos & live performances. There's a Prince's Trust performance of "The Wedding List" on there that blows me away. Guess it's c. '81-'82 (?) and her backing band includes Mick Karn, Pete Townsend and Phil Collins. Tres juicy.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Friday, 2 September 2005 14:56 (twenty years ago)

No, EMI have made an announcement - there would be a marketing plan in place to action re: pre christmas market.

Okay, but isn't it a bit weird? I mean haven't record companies gone out of their way in the past NOT to release things near Christmastime? What's your experience, DJ Martian - isn't November a rather slow time for releases? Maybe they just made a special case for her, but it seems to me if it did get pushed back, well, it's like they'd already have an excuse.

The Spiderwebbed Wilderness (Bimble...), Friday, 2 September 2005 16:48 (twenty years ago)

van der who (van smack), Saturday, 3 September 2005 01:07 (twenty years ago)

The Spiderwebbed Wilderness (Bimble...), Saturday, 3 September 2005 02:19 (twenty years ago)

I wonder what the cover art looks like.

Mustn't...think....about it....anymore.

The Spiderwebbed Wilderness (Bimble...), Saturday, 3 September 2005 02:22 (twenty years ago)

i'm having dreams about this album.

cutty (mcutt), Saturday, 3 September 2005 02:31 (twenty years ago)

For BIG albums the second week of November is normally the cut off time.

Therefore November 7th is fine, the hardcore Kate Bush fans will buy the album in the first couple of weeks, and then the momentum will continue over into the December Gift buying market.

Major labels as a rule don't release any new studio albums in December, and very few late November.

Statistically, October is the busiest month to release new albums.

Both EMI [UK] and Columbia [US] released the press release on the same day. It's on !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 3 September 2005 12:39 (twenty years ago)

December will be magic again!

The Spiderwebbed Wilderness (Bimble...), Saturday, 3 September 2005 13:34 (twenty years ago)

Is anyone else out there visualizing dark green for the cover art? I keep thinking dark green, maybe leaves, rather like her singles box set was. I could be completely wrong, of course, the mind's eye is a curious thing. I'd probably trust it more if I'd seen something more definite in a dream.

The Spiderwebbed Wilderness (Bimble...), Saturday, 3 September 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

more news, for the interested:

Hmmm.... well, that didn't reveal much :/

Not unpleasant, not drastically different to 'Red Shoes' era instrumentation, with a little bit of 'Hounds...' atmospherics. Some ambiguous, dark lyrics. Sounds more an album opening track than an obvious single, and not particularly pop either.

fandango (fandango), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 08:18 (twenty years ago)

i look forward to hearing this. as a fan, i've pretty much only been able to really enjoy hounds of love and then the greatest hits collection. hounds of love is such a solid album through and through that i'm afraid if i spend too much time listening to lesser work it will unfavorably affect the high esteem in which i hold her...so is there another whole album worth checking out, or is it pretty much singles otherwise? i really like "this woman's work" too!

viborgu, Wednesday, 21 September 2005 08:36 (twenty years ago)

All her albums are worth checking out, even if there are a few not-so-great songs on here & there. Just for the variety alone.

Trivia fact 20 years ago on September 16th 1985, Hounds of Love was released.

I remember it getting a 5 star review in Sounds magazine.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 12:32 (twenty years ago)

I've only heard it once so far and I have to go out the door in a minute, but did anyone else think it had an almost bluesy feel to it? Interesting, but I agree it doesn't come off as an obvious choice for a single.

Tim Finney OTM re: The Dreaming. It's like the alter ego of Hounds Of Love. If you don't like it the first time, play it again and repeat if necessary.

There's a Tipsy Ghost on the edge of my couch (Bimble...), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

thank you mr. hold tight the private caller

the song is casually wonderful

milton parker (Jon L), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

Just listened to the YSI above (thanks for that, btw). The diction is a little slurred, but I suspect that's down to the recording via Listen Again.

I'm not that sure about the almost cod-reggae instrumental in the middle, but (and this is the quote for the single sleeve) it's as good as anything on The Sensual World.

It feels like a forced single - not least because it has no real hook to speak of - but it's not the first time that has happened (c.f. Rubberband Girl). I expect to love it after I've heard it another half-dozen times.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

Something tells me she should have recorded this new album with Justus Köhncke.

JoB (JoB), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 19:49 (twenty years ago)

it is a great song.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

i think the slurred diction is intentional.

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

After a couple times through...yeah, this is nice. Not classic, but not disappointing. I'm surprised to realize how much I've missed her voice.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 20:03 (twenty years ago)

Thanks for the YSI.

aldo - surely the slurred diction is deliberate? I like the cod reggae.

But - can I remind you people - this is a NEW KATE BUSH SINGLE!?!?! How fucking great is that? ITS A NEW KATE BUSH SINGLE. JUST THINK ABOUT THAT FOR A MOMENT.
A.
NEW.
KATE.
BUSH.
SINGLE.

Ergo, I love it. Possibly, more than life itself,

Guilty Boksen (Bro_Danielson), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 20:25 (twenty years ago)

aldo - Hang on - This Woman's Work is on The Sensual World. That may just be the best track by anyone, ever.

(No, I am not overplaying it - me and Rosabelle and Alex in NYC, believe)

Guilty Boksen (Bro_Danielson), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

OK - I have listened to King of The Mountain about 10 times now. And it's wonderful ( I know this is not objective. I don't care - It's Kate Bush; -I'm not objective)

I can quite cheerfully put this on repeat until the album is released. But i need to hear it without the obvious compression (anyone?)

Gypsy - "I'm surprised to realize how much I've missed her voice." OTM does not cover it.

Guilty Boksen (Bro_Danielson), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 20:45 (twenty years ago)

I was all ready to declare 'underwhelmed' until I heard it (just now) for the third time. And it sticks.

Nice.

Not exactly the headfuck I was expecting, but very, very nice. Soon come November!!

fandango (fandango), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 20:53 (twenty years ago)

OMG.. single = possible b-sides??? I meant October!

I hadn't even thought about that for some reason (daftness) until having a browse around http://www.katebushnews.com/

also, nobody here has yet mentioned the rumour the double album consists (allegedly) of 7 tracks and one 37 min long piece(!)

Nobody seems to have a track title list yet.

E.X.C.I.T.E.D !!!

fandango (fandango), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 21:16 (twenty years ago)

I'm still not sure about the slurred diction - since I haven't heard it on broadcast I can't be sure but it sounds to me like the compression errors you get from BBC Listen Again. Possibly. I have couple of radio 4 things (the Stewart Lee/Alan Moore interview and the Alan Moore/Brian Eno interviews explicitly) that suffer from the same thing in a way that music normally doesn't. At the moment, I'm prepared to believe it's affecting the way this sounds.

I prefer Deeper Understanding to This Woman's Work, so there. But I'm still not unsure I'm right. And if not, then it's an even better poster quote than I intended it to be.

Having heard it the extra half-dozen times now though, wonderful. But not a single. And I'm still not sure about the guitars in the reggae bit.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 21:18 (twenty years ago)

aldo - I think you may be correct about the compression. It may also be responsible for the up front reggae guitars (are we sure this is a finished mix? Those guitars are very up front)

Re: Deeper Understanding and This Womans Work: I think we will have to agree to disagree here. This Womans Work is one of the most affecting songs I have ever heard - its a "lump in the throat" song, even on the least emotional of days.

Guilty Boksen (Bro_Danielson), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 22:07 (twenty years ago)

seriously this song is wonderful. such a grower. ahh.

i always feel bad when she tells that story about how she was kicked out of the conservatory or whatever and told she had no talent when obviously blah blah proven wrong etc etc.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Thursday, 22 September 2005 21:21 (twenty years ago)

why feel bad? she is one of the most popular female songwriters of all time.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 22 September 2005 21:24 (twenty years ago)

AND i feel bad when she's fucking the piano.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Thursday, 22 September 2005 21:28 (twenty years ago)

she wasn't told she had no talent, she just didn't want to play classical music and they wouldn't let her do her thing.

the happy smile patrol (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 22 September 2005 21:30 (twenty years ago)

i always assumed she was playing classical music there but doing this nonsensical interpretation based on believing everything can be expressed from the i'm an hysterical female b/c i've got a lot of vague sexual energy...mabye just b/c that's how she seems to make rock music.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Thursday, 22 September 2005 21:42 (twenty years ago)

OK I for one *don't* like this more by each listen. It's got something to do with not sounding like a proper song, more like an uncompleted jam or something (like almost everything on The Red Shoes (though this *sounds* MUCH BETTER, TRS gives me teh earache)).

Not really complaining tho, NEW KATE BUSH SINGLE, gonna buy single+album at sight anyway, but just now reaching for The Dreaming...

OleM (OleM), Thursday, 22 September 2005 22:04 (twenty years ago)

(Fuck, listening and just realised again for the nth time, she was *24* when The Dreaming was released!)

OleM (OleM), Thursday, 22 September 2005 22:16 (twenty years ago)

she's amazing

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Thursday, 22 September 2005 22:24 (twenty years ago)

I like it, but I am expecting more from the album.

I'd agree it's rather ethereal and deconstructed... something tells me that's going to be a characteristic of the full-length too.

Bit bothered by the 'slurriness' in this new (CD?? doesn't sound it!)rip too. Maybe she actually sang it outdoors, in the cold, method-actor style? Would make sense with teh 'Citzen Kane' & movie references. She doesn't enunciate badly all the way through.

... erm, it suddenly sounds even more awesome on replay. Damn. Damn!

fandango (fandango), Thursday, 22 September 2005 22:33 (twenty years ago)

OleM (OleM), Thursday, 22 September 2005 22:35 (twenty years ago)

Being that Kate can/will even make donkey noises(!) sound completely appropriate & compelling... I totally wouldn't put it out of reason to be deliberate.

fandango (fandango), Thursday, 22 September 2005 22:36 (twenty years ago)

Heheh you caught it :)

OleM (OleM), Thursday, 22 September 2005 22:38 (twenty years ago)

King of the Mountain

Could you see the aisles of women?
Could you see them screaming and weeping?
Could you see the storm rising?
Could you see the guy who was driving?
Could you climb higher and higher?
Could you climb right over the top?
Why does a multi-millionaire
Fill up his home with priceless junk?

The wind is whistling
The wind is whistling
Through the house

Elvis are you out there somewhere
Looking like a happy man?
In the snow with Rosebud
And king of the mountain

Another Hollywood waitress
Is telling us she's having your baby
And there's a rumour that you're on ice
And you will rise again someday
And that there's a photograph
Where you're dancing on your grave

The wind is whistling
The wind is whistling
Through the house

Elvis are you out there somewhere
Looking like a happy man?
In the snow with Rosebud
And king of the mountain

The wind it blows
The wind it blows the door closed

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 22 September 2005 22:45 (twenty years ago)

some dark shit. let's hope the rest of the album is as dark and WEIRD.

OleM (OleM), Thursday, 22 September 2005 23:26 (twenty years ago)

i'm listening on pretty bad headphones, but it sounds a bit dire straits to me and definitely peter gabriel and something else in there strong i can't place. i'm liking it but not blown away. for some reason not blown away by her vocals. and after reading the lyrics first (always fucks me) was expecting something i didn't recieve...maybe a LOT slower temp and more dreamy/dark goodness.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Friday, 23 September 2005 00:16 (twenty years ago)

i really need to listen on better headphones b/c the sound is coming across super thin in the higher ranges making her voice somehow seem even higher than it is.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Friday, 23 September 2005 00:18 (twenty years ago)

something else in there strong i can't place

Witchy Kate goodness?

I really like what's happening in the background, esp. towards the end, with what sounds like swirly, treated background vox -- could be Kate or male singers. Anyhow, it's a hell of an ODD track, from the vocals to the big synth pads to the drummer bright n' loud in the center of the mix. I'm super pleased.

PS Thanks, cutty!

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Friday, 23 September 2005 00:53 (twenty years ago)

GGGGGGGGGGGGGGod Damn "King of the Mounties" sounds good. And spacey and underivative and plinky-plonk over-bass and she's really reigned in, I like how considered and underdone (compared to previous Kate) it is.

I'm a Problem for Anthony Blair (noodle vague), Friday, 23 September 2005 01:54 (twenty years ago)

considered, underdone, reigned in, yes. she knows how to put a groove together (without falling back on "groove" cliches).

the happy smile patrol (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 23 September 2005 02:02 (twenty years ago)

She does have a particular kind of groove. It's hard to describe, because it somehow complements her ethereal qualities (her ethereality?), like it gives her a grounding to drift away from. Crystal-ball funk or something.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Friday, 23 September 2005 02:06 (twenty years ago)

It's a very straight vocal, none of the drama of her big singles, but she sounds like she's absolutely doing what she wants to do. The music is a lot sparser than Sensual World or Red Shoes as well, it's all very direct in the coolest possible way. I'm liking it lots.

I'm a Problem for Anthony Blair (noodle vague), Friday, 23 September 2005 02:13 (twenty years ago)

Bloody hell! Does that sound better than the radio rip or what? Superb stuff, the vocals are far easier to understand, the reggae guitar sounds in place and not whacked up in the mix. Everything sounds damned perfect to me and is getting better with each play.

It was reviewed on 6 Radio's roundtable tonight by Jon King (Gang of Four) Charlie sometitorother (Dead 60s) and David Quantick. Guess what? Charlie titfeatures didn't like it, Quantick was OK with it, Jon King unfortunately isn't a fan (cos I have got a lot of time for him) and was ridiculously disparaging. And Lamacq was, of course, a cnut. Still around on listen again:

The reggae-like jamage doesnt really gel w/the swoshy eerie keyboards....musically it sounds pretty generic, the drum kick in is nice, but doesnt really go anywhere. Her voice is still great.

not really feeling this, weird choice for a single.....I mean even sensual world had Love and Anger, which was pretty EPIC.

cutty (mcutt), Saturday, 24 September 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

I gotta say I'm not all that impressed with King of The Mountain either. It's not BAD but I just don't get it. I don't understand what the slurred diction is supposed to accomplish, and I agree the guitar isn't that great, especially this one part where it seems to just stop unnaturally abruptly before the chorus. And part of me thinks instead of the "oooohs" towards the end, a nice guitar solo might have helped the song more. Where's David Gilmour when you need him? Or even Eric Clapton would have been okay.

But the thing is I didn't get "Eat The Music" either, so what this means about the album, I can't even guess.

Bimble The Nimble, Jumped Over A Thimble (Bimble...), Saturday, 24 September 2005 16:55 (twenty years ago)

eric clapton? please.

cutty (mcutt), Saturday, 24 September 2005 17:15 (twenty years ago)

Look I can't stand Eric Clapton either. I still remember how John Peel called him a "nincompoop". But his tiny part in her last album really wasn't that bad.

Bimble The Nimble, Jumped Over A Thimble (Bimble...), Saturday, 24 September 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

a solo would detract from the absolute minimalism of this track. it is really a skeleton frame of a song, and i do think it's entirely intentional (as is the slurred diction)...

That little "peak" in the center stone/mountain/waveform could be her (standing)? Must get larger image in order to assess.

Ahem - this is a great single. And David Gilmour/Eric Clapton fireworks would've ruined it.

Mentalist! That's a prime Kate Bush Moment!

But the thing is I didn't get "Eat The Music" either,
That is because that suXXored.

Sudden drunken thought (triggered by winamp on random): I want a Bruce Gilbert and Kate Bush collab!

OleM (OleM), Saturday, 24 September 2005 23:37 (twenty years ago)

I oscillate on "Eat The Music". The sound is tinny and the parts of the choruses she doesn't sing herself feel a bit hamfisted neo-colonial, but then it has some ace ace phrasing by Kate - "like a pomegranate!".... "he's a woman at heart... and I lllluv him for that..." Also the arrangement is endearingly ill-advised.

I think the weaker part of The Red Shoes are those which go for a more conventional sound and fail, only in a way that sounds awkward rather than inspired. e.g. "Rubberband Girl".

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 25 September 2005 04:40 (twenty years ago)

I really like this except for the guitar, which is WAY too loud and messy. The drumming is wonderful...and of course the fretless bass. I'm looking forward to hearing the track with Mick Karn.

i have some trouble with the guitar too. it sounded better to me when i was listening on crap headphones and it sounded more tinny and jumpy...so yeah, maybe needs to be scaled back a little. overall i think its a pretty good song, but nothing i'd go bananas over. i like how she's using genesis/p. collins sounds though and somehow making them sound pretty fresh. and i like how she made a lot of unexpected choices and allignments even if its not working perfectly. hopefully the rest of album is as free-spun as this.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Sunday, 25 September 2005 20:43 (twenty years ago)

I hope that 2nd disc is some "9th Wave'-ish mega suite thing. I hope I hope!

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Thursday, 29 September 2005 22:57 (twenty years ago)

(me, upthread)

also, nobody here has yet mentioned the rumour the double album consists (allegedly) of 7 tracks and one 37 min long piece(!)

The second disc that is. Looks like it's trackmarked too if it's really the case. I think the first track being titled 'Prelude' = I believe this rumour now.

This is so exciting! I've been going on a Kate Bush binge to prepare. Everytime I listen to The Dreaming or The Hounds of Love they shock me with their brilliance. They are albums that everyone must own.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 30 September 2005 06:04 (twenty years ago)

(countdown to first post declaring the album a disappointment...or has that happened already?)

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 30 September 2005 11:14 (twenty years ago)

probably asked and answered elsewhere, but my search didn't help any. does anyone know of any plans to release a DVD collection of Kate's videos at some point? (or does one exist already that I'm just not aware of?)

thanks in advance for any help you can provide

rentboy (rentboy), Friday, 30 September 2005 12:30 (twenty years ago)

the single cover was drawn by kate's 7 year old son.

harshaw (jube), Saturday, 1 October 2005 14:22 (twenty years ago)

"Okay I had a dream about this album the other night. And it didn't have a dark green cover at all, it was white with a picture of her and some red somewhere, maybe only her lips were red, I dunno. I was listening to it in the dream but I couldn't tell whether I liked it or not because I was in such shock."

That's funny I had pictured something similar... but I realize now that I was basically picturing the cover of "the dreaming"

french diplomacy (french diplomacy), Saturday, 1 October 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

Yes.

Bimble The Nimble, Jumped Over A Thimble! (Bimble...), Saturday, 1 October 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

I agree with jed about singles and albums sharing a theme being nice. looks like the typeface on the single and albums covers is the same but her name is in caps on the single but not the album

single cover is a nice drawing but might look a little like a charity single

I like the song

RJG (RJG), Saturday, 1 October 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

has the single even been posted? if you haven't heard it here is "king of the mountain."

I'm a dumb shit.

Only glanced over the thread because it was way too long and the YSI file was already made for something else. I got overly exited for two minutes there…

taking a time out in the corner (boo radley), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 04:33 (twenty years ago)

OK so I'm not a big Kate fan (and according to at least one of you I'm no fan at all, owning as I do only "Hounds of Love" and "Whole Story". I did once own all Kate's output but have radically scaled down my sprawling music collection once or twice during the last 12 years. I think I kept the best, although I've been on the verge of re-buying "The Dreaming" more than once). I do however feel a sense of public duty towards genuine music lovers such as yourselves.

Here then are a few addresses to less expensive places to buy "Aerial". Yes they are in Britain, but do take note of the "Free Worldwide Delivery" banners on the websites. And yes there may be extra import taxes but I don't think they would be much, not with the initial price being this good and no shipping fees to worry about:

http://www.bangcd.com/productDetail.aspx?prod_id=1678
http://www.play.com/play247.asp?page=title&r=CD&title=742012&p=34&g=48&pa=rcs
http://www5.cd-wow.com/detail_results.php?product_code=21765

So paste these into your address bar and give it some thought. I've not used bangcd before but the other two I can heartily recommend.

By the way, £1 works out at about $1.80 at the moment. Bit more than you're used to paying perhaps but it sure beats Amazon's $47 import price!

Hope this helps.

BTW, if any of you find a complete set of "Aerial" album lyrics before the release date I'd appreciate a heads-up. Cheers.

Derek Raphalge Cook, Wednesday, 5 October 2005 21:38 (twenty years ago)

according to her website, it will be available here domestic, but thanks for looking out, bro.

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 21:40 (twenty years ago)

Yeah I just figured out that that $47 CD Amazon are advertising is actually the JAPANESE import that supposedly includes DVD (yikes!).
If you look around carefully on the site you'll find they are selling the regular import for only $18.99. I'm glad to hear it's coming out domestic, though.

Bimble The Nimble, Jumped Over A Thimble! (Bimble...), Thursday, 6 October 2005 02:42 (twenty years ago)

i had a dream last night that i went to kate bush's house. not only was she wearing a babooshka (!!!) but she was hosting a museum exhibit in her house with random trinkets and miscellany that she'd collected over the years on display. the name of the exhibit was LONELINESS and the sign in front of her house read "inspired by the song by DJ tomcraft." she seemed very sweet, though mildly annoyed that i wasn't asking many questions about the exhibit.

in other words, I AM SO EXCITED FOR THIS ALBUM

joseph (joseph), Thursday, 6 October 2005 13:40 (twenty years ago)

wearing a Babooshka? Isn't Babooshka the Russian word for "Grandmother"? I thought that was the irony of the song - that the woman feels older than she is but seems younger and more exotic because of the supposedly cool name. Can you wear grandmothers? ;)
Glad to hear the album is going to be reasonably priced for you folks stateside.

Derek Raphalge Cook, Thursday, 6 October 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

he was thinking shmata.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 6 October 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

Good lord, I just thought "Babooshka" was some term of endearment or other.

That's a delightfully bizarre dream.

Bimble The Nimble, Jumped Over A Thimble! (Bimble...), Thursday, 6 October 2005 19:55 (twenty years ago)

i always thought babooshka meant the headwrap! oof.

joseph (joseph), Thursday, 6 October 2005 20:37 (twenty years ago)

that was a nice dream, esp. the name of the exhibit. babooshka can mean both older woman and also headscarf thingy. i once had a magical dream i was sucked into this piece of art i saw at the sfmoma icons show (not sure if that show travelled)...which was a shiny silvery mcdonalds bigmac wrapper with sections cut out and pulled up to creat houses ... a projector projected snow running across the image which also created shadows of the house. one of the most magical things i've ever seen. sorry that was sorta unrelated.

Kate Bush's Album Artwork Contains Cryptic Message
Fans baffled...

by Daniel Melia on 9/30/2005

Kate BushKate Bush’s new album cover reportedly contains a hidden message that fans are desperate to decode.

Bush’s first album in more than a decade entitled ‘Aerial’ has a soundwave image on the artwork that contains the cryptic message, apparently it is a “visaul representation of spoken, or sung words over music.”

A source told this morning’s Daily Star: “Sound analysts and fans alike have been agonisingly attempting to work out the message. The current favourites are wildly different.”

So far the leading suggestion are ‘We paint penguins pink’, 'Elvis is alive’ and 'Wind and waves of love’ although its not known if any of these are correct.

The source revealed that the plan was to baffle and intrigue the fans, they said: All the artwork on the album is interlinked and the cover art is supposed to get people guessing. The true message will only be revealed when you buy the album.”

The insider also quashed rumours that the second cd of the album will feature one continuous song, saying: The second disc, or B-side, is a number of different songs all linked together by theme to create one fluid piece of music.”

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 10 October 2005 02:28 (twenty years ago)

This sounds like the time she claimed that the weird backwards-sounding "We let the weirdness in" on "Leave It Open" contained a secret message recorded backwards....

... And it turned out to be "We let the weirdness in" sung backwards.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 10 October 2005 05:13 (twenty years ago)

i hope the cryptic message is "fremme neppa venette"

joseph (joseph), Monday, 10 October 2005 05:18 (twenty years ago)

wearing a Babooshka? Isn't Babooshka the Russian word for "Grandmother"?

it means both!

glasgow coma score (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 10 October 2005 05:51 (twenty years ago)

babooshka meaning
ba = baaa - sound from a sheep
boosh = bush - woman's reproductive organ.
ka = car - a vehicle of transport.
here's a scary thought : i am sober.

retroboy, Monday, 10 October 2005 06:39 (twenty years ago)

Hi again. Thought this might be interesting for you all - two customer reviews of Aerial. Someone called "pukkatukka" has written both long reviews, one for each disc, going into quite some detail on each song.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/flex-sign-in/ref=cm_rate_rev_pagepos2/202-9578815-0139819#rated-review

sounds legit too, I think.

Derek Raphalge Cook, Wednesday, 12 October 2005 21:43 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, link doesn't work. Just go to Amazon.co.uk, find "Aerial" and read the customer reviews. :)

I CAN'T WAIT UNTIL MY PINK KATE BUSH SHIRT COMES IN THE MAIL

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 21:49 (twenty years ago)

those reviews do not sound legit to me.

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 23:19 (twenty years ago)

So, no video comments then?

I'm not sure that I was overly keen on it, but at least it confirms the song is completely about Elvis.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Monday, 17 October 2005 10:48 (twenty years ago)

Those Amazon reviews are pretty accurate. Don't know who would have written them as press reviewers have been invited into the EMI bunker to listen to the sole copy in the country - hence no leaks.

Also see Jason Cowley in yesterday's OMM, here: http://observer.guardian.co.uk/omm/reviews/story/0,13875,1590547,00.html

My review will be in next month's Uncut.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Monday, 17 October 2005 11:02 (twenty years ago)

The video to King Of The Mountain is pretty bad. What is the significance of switching from black and white to colour as they do? Why is the footage of the Elvis costume shot on such terrible video? Why does the whole thing look as if it would've been laughed at fifteen years ago? What's the deal with the Citizen Kane references (Rosebud)?

The song is okay.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 17 October 2005 11:04 (twenty years ago)

Those Amazon reviews seem to have mysteriously vanished.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Monday, 17 October 2005 11:05 (twenty years ago)

Maybe quoting all those lyrics attracted the attention of EMI's legal dept.

I had assumed the reviewer was at the playback - there was definitely a sense of "I'm basing this on one listen and some hastily scribbled notes" about the comments. But if it was an invited journo, why publish on Amazon?

zebedee (zebedee), Monday, 17 October 2005 11:47 (twenty years ago)

'Mrs Bartolozzi', a rhapsody to nothing less than a washing machine: 'My blouse wrapping itself around your trousers... slooshy sloshy/ slooshy sloshy.'

fandango (fandango), Monday, 17 October 2005 12:58 (twenty years ago)

has anybody mentioned that the b-side to the single is apparently a cover of Marvin Gaye - Sexual Healing??

fandango (fandango), Monday, 17 October 2005 13:05 (twenty years ago)

WHAT!?

(Um, the video was 'exclusive' on ch4, and umm it's fairly dull.)

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 17 October 2005 13:06 (twenty years ago)

Mavin Gaye's Sexual Helaing? I have her version of this on a bootleg somewhere - she recorded it for an album by someone else (can't remember who - a singer/songwriter of some kind) but it was not released.

I assume this is the same version?

Guilty Boksen (Bro_Danielson), Monday, 17 October 2005 13:18 (twenty years ago)

i don't know. i expected it to be a lot more cringeworthy after all your comments, but i kind of liked it.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 17 October 2005 13:19 (twenty years ago)

same here. i didn't like her dancing though. i know she's old now, but can't she move more than her shoulders?

astor riviera (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 17 October 2005 13:20 (twenty years ago)

her butt is probably really big at this point.

Yep, that's the one Mark. My copy isn't any better quality!

Guilty Boksen (Bro_Danielson), Monday, 17 October 2005 13:28 (twenty years ago)

That works whether you're talking about her butt or the Marvin Gaye cover, to be honest.

xpost to jbr

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Monday, 17 October 2005 13:29 (twenty years ago)

same here. i didn't like her dancing though. i know she's old now, but can't she move more than her shoulders?

-- astor riviera

I wonder how much the fact that she isn't moving very 'naturally' is down to years of actual formal dancing & choreography? That said, you would think she'd spot the awkwardness in this video, but then the visual side of her work isn't always ... ummm, consistent to put it mildly.

fandango (fandango), Monday, 17 October 2005 17:39 (twenty years ago)

I don't care about the awkward dancing, she looks hottttt.

Really the video isn't that bad, although some of the animation is a bit "Sledgehammer". If you don't get the Kane references, you're not listening to the song.

Nöödle Vägue (noodle vague), Monday, 17 October 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)
