That awful poster with Lennon, Elvis, Hendrix etc

You know which one. This embarrassment is called something along the lines of "Legends Lounge" and depicts a kind of rock'n'roll heaven jam session wherein Elvis sings; Lennon plays (presumably) rhythm on a Rickenbacker; Buddy Holly strums an acoustic; and Hendrix obliviously tortures a Strat stage right. Jim Morrison just stands off to the side looking lost; I'm assuming he's on backup vocals. There is no bass player. Keith Moon is on drums, I believe.

Anyway, it had just occured to me that the music made by this particular assemblage of personalities would be unbearably awful. Anyone care to comment?

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 01:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you fucking kidding? What on earth would be awful about: Lennon + Elvis?? Lennon + Holly?? Hendrix + Morrison (already proven great!)?? Hendrix + Lennon (already proven great!)?? Holly + Hendrix (two greatest Strat guys)?? Keith Moon + ANY of these party animals???

This aggregation would greatness upon greatness upon greatness, and I'd like to see anybody paint a black velvet image that proves otherwise.

Marilyn, James Dean et al don't mean shit to me, but rock-god idolatry definitely does. Same with Pac & Biggie T-shirts. It's like folk-art inspired by folk-art.

Yeah, I see people wearing those shirts all the time, and it seems to represent EXACTLY the type of person who would wear one. And as a sartorial choice, a silkscreened wolf on a black T-shirt doesn't seem all that "crazy."

Darinm please describe the dead country stars at that bar bear your old house. (You know Kevin Spacey is playing you? In a movie, I mean. And he's already ten years older than you were when you died. I don't want to see the movie or its poster.) The current Gretchen Wilson video has traumatized its song from mah mind. It's got gobs of black-and-white (filmwise; ethnically they're all white o course) dead people, in the audience and on stage with her. They don't sing along, just mouth admiring comments about her , and some play along (silently mebbe). Yes, they're all stars! Stars of the Grand Ol Opry! Al signifying,"Room for one more..."

Soon after World War II ended some Whittier Republicans approached Nixon about running for a seat in the United States House of Representatives.[23] Nixon accepted, and defeated five term Democratic incumbent Jerry Voorhis in the November 1946 election to represent southern California's 12th Congressional district.[23] He helped finance the campaign with his World War II poker winnings.[24]

they're memes in the sense they're images overlaid with text which are shared online but i guess i think of 4chan-derived memes as a different animal altogether - images which involve weird, sometimes wilfully offensive humour which mutate as they're passed around and often end up with an entirely different meaning over time

Have we touched on this hot little number? The song was first recorded by the band Climax in 1973,[1] but it failed to chart. It was then covered by The Righteous Brothers in 1974 and reached number three on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.[2][3]

And Janis took a piece of our hearts
And Otis brought us all to the dock of the bay
Sing a song to - light my fire
Remember Jim that way,
They've all found another place,

Then life is just a one-night stand.

This week I learned mom knows who Brian Jones is. Sort of.

The 25 Best Songs Ever Ranked In Order (Deflatormouse), Saturday, 28 August 2021 07:09 (four years ago)

She phoned a couple of days ago and mentioned that the drummer for the Rolling Stones died "again".

The 25 Best Songs Ever Ranked In Order (Deflatormouse), Saturday, 28 August 2021 07:11 (four years ago)

I said, no, this is the first time a drummer for the Rolling Stones has died, are you maybe thinking of the drummer for the Who?

And she said no, his name was Barry, who is Barry?

The 25 Best Songs Ever Ranked In Order (Deflatormouse), Saturday, 28 August 2021 07:13 (four years ago)

"You mean the guy from the Bee Gees?"

"No, the Rolling Stones."

Eventually we figured out that she was thinking of Brian Jones, but she thought he was the drummer and that his name was Barry.

"You don't know who Brian Jones is."

"Yes, I remember he wore yellow corduroy pants. Mustard yellow."

"OMG, you know who Brian Jones is."

The 25 Best Songs Ever Ranked In Order (Deflatormouse), Saturday, 28 August 2021 07:17 (four years ago)

Barry was the 7th Rolling Stone and their second drummer. Andrew Loog Oldham insisted he be removed from all publicity photos because he didn’t look as good as Brian Jones in yellow corduroys. He played behind a curtain at all gigs until his death in 2002.

I think it would be helpful if each poorly drawn person were holding something to identify them. In the manner of medieval saint paintings or the way, in the first picture, Amy WINEhouse is holding WINE.

Marc Bolan: smoking a bowl

Jimi Hendrix: holding a live hen

Kurt Cobain: eating corn on the... cob

I think the question is more are these actual photos mashed up together or did AI just generate all that, I think the answer is the latter

He's left his stuff while he ascends but crucially is also wearing it,a strange way to square the "do your clothes come with you when you're raptured?" debate.

I think it's in agreement with liturgical orthodoxy in that we leave behind our t-shirt, boots and worldly bandana, and enter the gates of heaven barechested, in long yellow socks, and wearing our spiritual bandana.

one month passes...

Just getting you all prepared for the inevitable:

In a powerful celebration of culture and history, the Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) and the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) proudly announce that the new iconic Interstate 55 (I-55) bridge spanning the Mississippi River between West Memphis, Arkansas, and Memphis, Tennessee, will now be known as Kings’ Crossing.

This new name, officially adopted by the Arkansas Highway Commission and the Tennessee General Assembly, honors three transformative figures known as “Kings”: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; B.B. King; and Elvis Presley.

the fact that this thread is all AI now, and likely will be forever, sort of robs the fun for me

budo jeru, Friday, 5 September 2025 14:46 (two weeks ago)

How come AI can't do a convincing Freddie Mercury though? In fact a lot of these people look slightly like someone else, can't quite work out who it is Fred looks like.

The Freddie Mercury depiction reminds me of when you see those clickbait articles about some guy in a small town in the UK who 'looks just like Freddie Mercury', but then you open up the article and you don't see much resemblance.
