my first can CD was "flow motion" and i hated it, didn't get what the big deal about can was based on it. maybe there's some good stuff on it but i've never been able to find anything about it i like, and avoided post-damo can based on that

which is a little sad because over the past 20 years as i've slowly gotten around to listening to the other post-damo records, while they're really patchy pretty much all of them except "flow motion" have at least one track i like

so here's a little over an hour of post-damo can, one track from every one of their post-damo records except "flow motion" and "rite time", plus a couple tracks from BBC broadcasts

I love the first side, Can's pop stuff is great.

Is Lou Reed a Good Singer? (Tom D.), Monday, 25 May 2020 21:37 (five years ago)

honestly, i think it's the mix; the mix is just so bad. i could see how "i want more" _could_ theoretically be a good song, but irmin sounds like fucking tom constanten on it, and the whole thing is so goddamn dry, like every instrument comes from a different dimension. the cod-reggae thing on the title track just drives me up the wall, too. i don't care how good a drummer jaki is, the beats on this one are wack.

Kate (rushomancy), Tuesday, 26 May 2020 00:31 (five years ago)

Do you like Future Days?

dow, Tuesday, 26 May 2020 00:46 (five years ago)

but irmin sounds like fucking tom constanten on it

I've got no idea what this means, and I know who Tom Constanten is.

Is Lou Reed a Good Singer? (Tom D.), Tuesday, 26 May 2020 00:57 (five years ago)

future days is mixed weirdly too but irmin's keyboard tone is better at least and jaki's drumming is way busier/funkier.

Kate (rushomancy), Tuesday, 26 May 2020 01:38 (five years ago)

Listening now and I agree.

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 26 May 2020 02:04 (five years ago)

I noticed that Flow Motion is the only one of the main albums (not counting Out Of Reach and Rite Time) I don't have at the moment, although I have had it on record and CD before. So that may say something. I got rid of the late 80s CDs when the remasters were done and never replaced that one. The title track is really the basis for the wah workout in the long version of Fool's Gold isn't it.

Noel Emits, Tuesday, 26 May 2020 13:45 (five years ago)

the vocals on "I Want More" are so fucking weird, especially for a charting single

frogbs, Tuesday, 26 May 2020 13:52 (five years ago)

I didn't know there were quite so many cover versions of I Want More (Richard H Kirk, Finitribe and latterly, Blancmange) although I did know Galaxis' funky Italo track which is really good.

budo jeru, Tuesday, 26 May 2020 22:10 (five years ago)

i've been listening to future days a lot in my car, after not hearing it for years, and finding it weird that i always thought it was the breezy, accessible can record when so much of it is rock-derived free jazz and deliberately blunt / dis-harmonic. it's probably because of the mixing that puts the ayahuasca trip of keyboards and guitars in the background. they just completely take apart rock/blues, no wonder they were popular with punks.

crystal-brained yogahead (map), Wednesday, 3 June 2020 19:31 (five years ago)

is a message circulating on Can's FB feed and presumably elsewhere.
Sad to hear that the source of the earlier volumes has passed on anyway.
Though assume that was more widely known.

Stevolende, Sunday, 21 August 2022 11:44 (three years ago)

Ah, that’s a shame. But credit to him for his wonderful work, I’m glad his legacy on that front exists.

listening to the Brighton set right now. man oh man this is the sort of music you can really lose your head in

frogbs, Tuesday, 23 August 2022 03:03 (three years ago)

Might as in a possibility that might be regarded as low. Though presumably relying on what can be turned up being as low a generation as possible.
They are looking for other recordings from other sources. So hope things are going to turn up. There have been some great live sets appear on torrent sites over the years. Wahldbuhne 72 is one I really like.

Stevolende, Tuesday, 23 August 2022 03:11 (three years ago)

Sorry if this was already posted

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/05/11/arts/music/can-live-albums.html

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 23 August 2022 03:23 (three years ago)

There had been a similar call out by the Tim Buckley estate back when expanded reissues of his lps were being planned. Though there it only seemed to actually get release for the first lp. If what was released then actually was the result of that. Rhino Handmade released a set with the recordings of Buckley's band from 65 among other things. I think they had been looking for memorabilia to reproduce in the artwork too.
Would have loved a full series of that stuff with bonus material of that level but it never happened beyond that first one.

But the Can thing is a similar public call out for recordings etc. So presumably if successful the bootleg series will continue a lot.

Stevolende, Tuesday, 23 August 2022 03:26 (three years ago)

it does give me hope when I think about all the King Crimson bootlegs out there, they've got 'em for more different shows than they even played it seems

frogbs, Tuesday, 23 August 2022 03:30 (three years ago)

I think the 22nd May 72 is the Wahldbuhne gig I was mentioning above. Think that's the venue anyway. I thought I heard some commentary in some of the version I have which might suggest it was a radio broadcast. Which would make it a good choice if it was still stored at a still active radio station.

I assume what they are really looking for is other tapers who have first generation tapes they've curated ever since. Or people who've inherited similar generation copies. I assume that indicates a level of amnesty over recordings though not sure what the legal thing would be. Also assume tapes would be returned to recorder though again not sure how that works. Cos not sure how Can estate is on tape or recording trading. & even Grateful Dead made it into a commercial thing after a while. Though that couldn't change them having had taper zones at gigs.

The Tim Buckley thing was an announcement partially saying "We Know What Is Out There" & giving people an opportunity to come forward with whatever they had. I think announcement went on to say they would be trying to make releases as comprehensive as possible. I think the s/t deluxe set came out in the wake of that and would have been a great pattern to follow. The next thing I was aware of was the My Fleeting House dvd which I assumed was tied into the series but proceeded to edit the 26 minute continuous performance of the Boboquivari appearance and omit one of the 2 OGWT performances from 1974 when they would have fit. So far from comprehensive. Then had the person organising it claiming he was the director so taking credit for work done in 1970 which I found both odd and extremely pushy. Shame would love a complete remastered version of the Boboquivari performance since I had it in a much rougher version which must have been in circulation since it was broadcast.
I would have thought that if there was one official video one would try to make it as comprehensive as possible. Not start imposing ones artistic licence over things. There was enough space to do so. & I had seen the estate's mission statement beforehand.
Unfortunately no further 2cd deluxe versions of Buckley lps appeared. Tim at least. There have been a few live sets since which have been interesting and the more avant lps are available in some form though not sure if alone. They're definitely in box sets though.

So looking forward to see what does happen with Can. I thought the Velvet Underground had a bootleg series started, did that just stop after a couple of releases or am I unaware of other official releases.

Stevolende, Tuesday, 23 August 2022 07:34 (three years ago)

it stopped after *one* release, which imo disqualifies it as a “series”

assert (matttkkkk), Tuesday, 23 August 2022 21:06 (three years ago)

wonder if Lost Tapes will ever get a reissue. they're doing a good job keeping everything in print but this is still the holy grail of archival releases, they really oughta do a second run

frogbs, Tuesday, 23 August 2022 21:11 (three years ago)

I read earlier this week in I Am Damo Suzuki that Jaki Liebezeit didn't like playing with most bassists. Only really liked playing with a handful including Jah Wobble and it was one reason Holger Czukay moved away from bass in Can. Apparently Liebezeit prefered playing with Rosko Gee. Appeared to find the way bassists held down the rhythm obstructive and prefered more exploratory styles or not at all. This was in the book at a point when the Damo Suzuki band had become a 4 piece with 2 guitars and no bass and Liebezeit on drums.
Don't think I had really heard complaint about that early minimalist bass style Czukay had on the early lps which other people picked up as influence.

Stevolende, Wednesday, 24 August 2022 00:31 (three years ago)

He called the bass a "stupid dinosaur instrument" in The Can Book (by Pascal Bussy). He says a lot of things which might surprise Can fans in that book!

Buckfast At Tiffany's (Tom D.), Wednesday, 24 August 2022 06:56 (three years ago)

As for Czukay stopping playing bass, I'd read that the band thought Czukay was playing too much and too loud live. In contrast, Jah Wobble and Rosko Gee are both pretty in the pocket bass players who very much hold the rhythm down, whereas Czukay was much more exploratory - live that is, not on record.

I like their short poetic songs as much as the epic jazzy spaced out jams. Nothing against the early raw psych stuff, but it can sound a bit like Piper at the Gates of Dawn.

I had dinner with Malcolm Mooney once. And Rick Brown and Sue Garner. Bryan from Brooklyn techno party the Bunker and his then wife Seze put it together. I think Seze was like “Dan is gonna get a kick out of this”. I had met Rick Brown before but not Malcolm. Seze’s mothers partner was there as well, and old Hoboken scene guy who was friendly with the feelies. It was alternatively awkward and awesome. Sorry if I’ve told this story up thread I’m too lazy to search. Everybody was super cool.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 24 August 2022 22:52 (three years ago)

Presume it's you on drums LL, maybe Leezy from Khruangbin on bass, what about keys? and probably Kim Gordon for vocals if I wanted Damo-type free vibes.

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 14 October 2022 14:44 (three years ago)

waiting for my copy too, apparently this one's only 30 minutes long? but the scattered reviews I've seen make it sound interesting. still kind of curious why they started this live series with 3 shows from roughly the same period, kinda makes me doubt there are that many other good records out there

frogbs, Friday, 14 October 2022 14:45 (three years ago)

Full bandcamp digital release today. It starts out kind of riffing on I want More!

Lord Pickles (Boring, Maryland), Friday, 14 October 2022 14:51 (three years ago)

Yeah it's a shorter release compared to the last two, but still good stuff.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 14 October 2022 14:52 (three years ago)

I have a '72 show, a '73 show, and the 4CD "Canobits" studio outtakes set, but yeah for such a jammy band it's weird that there aren't more taped shows.

sleeve, Friday, 14 October 2022 15:12 (three years ago)

there are a lot of them that I've found on Slsk or whatever but the sound quality is nowhere near what you get on this live series. I mean, they do still sound like boots, but they're pretty clear

frogbs, Friday, 14 October 2022 15:16 (three years ago)

at least compared to the 1971-1977 Live Box - the performances on that are great but I find it unlistenable

frogbs, Friday, 14 October 2022 15:17 (three years ago)

Apparently the full Cuxhaven show was two sets and there is a 100 minute recording floating around out there. Guessing that either the rest was not up to snuff quality wise or Irwin didn't like the rest.

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 14 October 2022 16:58 (three years ago)

Pretty cool, if short (as others have said), but as with the previous two volumes, I can't see ever pulling this out over the proper albums or even The Lost Tapes, at least not after I've listened to this 3-4 times and the novelty of 'OMG, a live Can thing I've never heard' wears off. I'm afraid I might be expecting too much from this series.

Paul Ponzi, Friday, 14 October 2022 20:49 (three years ago)

speaking of a repress of The Lost Tapes would be super cool

frogbs, Friday, 14 October 2022 20:52 (three years ago)

There is about another 50 mins worth from Cuxhaven and it's great, the quality is the same, I've no idea why Schmidt didn't just put it out.

That is kind of weird. I can see them trying to kee these releases down to 1 LP for economic reasons maybe, but I ask wonder if they’re holding stuff back for some kind of box set/collection of the whole series

MaresNest, Sunday, 16 October 2022 10:59 (three years ago)

Got it, thank you MaresNest! Listening now - "Vernal Equinox" is intense! Wow. That is frustrating that they left over half of the show off the CD/LP - wasn't the original intention of the series to present complete shows...?

ernestp, Monday, 17 October 2022 01:22 (three years ago)

This is wonderful, thanks maresnest

i'm right back on my shit (Hunt3r), Monday, 17 October 2022 03:07 (three years ago)

Got it, too - thank you Maresnest, much appreciated!

willem, Monday, 17 October 2022 05:16 (three years ago)

Yeah, I can't lie, I'm a little bit disappointed. The official release is really good stuff but absolutely baffling that they'd cut this down to less than half an hour given what's out there for this show. Particularly after all the buzz for the first two volumes about how they wanted to treat each show as complete and tell the full story of the whole trip, i.e. this about Stuttgart:

Originally recorded on tape, these carefully restored live albums will comprise the entirety of each show in the format of a story with a beginning, middle and end, with Can’s performances taking on a life of their own.

Don't get me wrong, still thrilled to have an official release and I'll continue to support the series, just really surprised that this one is so truncated.

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 20 October 2022 05:16 (three years ago)

Thanks Maresnest!

I am genuinely dumbfounded how Irmin Schmidt could listen to that version of "Vernal Equinox" and decide it wasn't good enough to release. Maybe he thought it was too close to the recorded version? In fact this whole recording is great and actually has better audio quality than anything they've released in this series so far.

Fronted by a bearded Phil Collins (Tom D.), Friday, 21 October 2022 07:33 (three years ago)

maybe this half is by another taper or something?

StanM, Friday, 21 October 2022 07:35 (three years ago)

That's a possibility but then why release not even half of the concert?

Fronted by a bearded Phil Collins (Tom D.), Friday, 21 October 2022 07:57 (three years ago)

I'm fairly sure it's the same taper. Given their stature, Can are actually pretty well served in the taping community, especially given the times and the technology available, maybe being in Germany helped with its accessibility to decent gear.

I've been told that there was a guy called Paul (iirc) from the UK who was a sort of semi-official archivist/überfan and over the years he had amassed a good collection of recordings and master tapes, and would apparently float things out now and again (within reason, to trusted mates) sadly he passed away a little while back (perhaps before the Lost Tapes?) but the material has made its way back to the band.

MaresNest, Friday, 21 October 2022 11:00 (three years ago)

Andy Hall was the guy's name and he became a close friend of the band. He did good work that man!

Fronted by a bearded Phil Collins (Tom D.), Friday, 21 October 2022 11:09 (three years ago)

Ah, thanks for the correction.

MaresNest, Friday, 21 October 2022 11:15 (three years ago)

yeah I'm kinda baffled by this one, gotta wonder if maybe getting another triple LP printed would've been a considerable delay. idk what else would explain it

frogbs, Sunday, 23 October 2022 02:24 (three years ago)

Could it be Irmin unhappy with his performance on the unused material? Wouldn't be the first time someone made an executive decision for that reason, despite the general quality being high.

the steven gerrard of pop (Matt #2), Sunday, 23 October 2022 08:07 (three years ago)

Just one problem with that theory: his playing is fucking great on the unused material!

Fronted by a bearded Phil Collins (Tom D.), Sunday, 23 October 2022 08:34 (three years ago)

thx MaresNest – listened to the released material this week and enjoyed it v much, and it's great to be sitting here on a damp dark Sunday morning listening to the unreleased material too.

I must admit I wasn't massively engaged by either Brighton or Stuttgart - should give them another go - but i'm loving the attack on the Cuxhaven recording/s.

i decided to see what genius thinks the lyrics to the damo-era can records are

it's kind of not a question of "right" or "wrong" with those lyrics, some of them anybody's guess will do

you could just do a thread for genius annotations with wild-ass interpretations of the lyrics, probably, there are some really cool takes but there are also some takes that are just like, uh, what?

anyway i love what genius has for the lyrics of what they say is "verse 4" of peking o:

[Verse 4]

listening to the later records and wondering: did the Rosko/Reebop-era can actually play any shows? were there any recordings? I get that it's not the Can we all know and love but I still find those albums plenty entertaining. and they can really groove! I'd listen to a good 90 minutes of jamming around Serpentine and A Spectacle right now. and then Can Can as the encore!! is there anything???

I believe their live schedule was pretty much the same as before - in 1977 anyway.

Apparently this is the earliest footage of Can playing live - July 5, 1970 to be exact - just after Damo had joined. There isn't much of it though. It doesn't sound much like the recorded version of "Oh Yeah" but that's definitely what they're playing.

oh this isn't the same as the soest footage! the soest version is great, it goes on for 20 minutes, and just like here damo actually sings "oh yeah"... there it's more of a repeated chorus. "oh yeah" developed a lot from damo's earliest days to tago mago...

the entire rollout has been weird. Stuttgart was a great way to kick it off, maybe not the era of Can everyone wanted to hear but still a great show. and then the second is...a similar show from the same tour? and the third from one that's just a year later, but this time only the first half hour? whole thing just seems not very well thought out

https://soundstation.dk/shop/4-all-products/178863-live-in-paris-1973---2024-european-mute-label-5-track-lp-pre-order/

Mute and Spoon Records present the next instalment of the curated CAN live concert series, LIVE IN PARIS 1973—the first in the series to feature Damo Suzuki's vocals.

The series was overseen by founding member Irmin Schmidt and producer/engineer René Tinner, who delicately worked on restoring the archival recordings to the best quality for current modern technology. This record captures the band’s 1973 performance in Paris and features Irmin Schmidt on keyboard & synths, Jaki Liebezeit on drums, Michael Karoli on guitars, Holger Czukay on bass, and Damo Suzuki on vocals for one of his final shows with the band.

Did they ever even play a proper gig with Malcolm Mooney? According to the website below, there were three "events" at Schloss Norvenich. Mooney isn't on "Prehistoric Future" recordings afaict, which leaves the famous performance of "Yoo Doo Right" where he freaked out. Then there are three performances in Switzerland, two of which where they were apparently doing a live soundtrack at a theatre. I don't know if Mooney was there or not. Note that the filmed Soest performance was like their 12th ever gig... though probably less than that if you discount the Schloss Norvenich performances.

uhhh - the Mother Sky bootleg, that says it's from June 71, is also that same 72-may-22 show, just split into different length tracks, and not sounding as good as the later fan "remasters"

insane it was released 50 years ago. someone could put it out wholesale today and it would be huge.

like one of my favorite DJ memories was playing some of the title track and having someone come back to see what it was, then coming back a few minutes later going "wait, this is an OLD band?"...buddy, if you don't know Can, you got some good times ahead of ya.

another fun one was when my sister in law showed up who loves Garth Brooks, so I played "The Thunder Rolls" which I segued into "Oh Yeah" during the thunderclap at the end. as I always say if you can't amuse anyone else you might as well amuse yourself

one month passes...

Haven't seen it myself, but apparently this was from a Q&A with Irmin Schmidt in the new issue of Uncut:

But following the the release later this year of two 1977 UK sets from Aston and Keele universities,
Schmidt is minded to reseal the archive for good. "I think it's enough," he says simply.
"There is quite a lot out from Can. These live records for me, they keep the standard and the quality.
I hate the idea to squeeze it out and find the last little ****!"

Bummer, but I'll choose to focus on getting what we did get.

I mean, obviously the hope of a long-running Schmidt's Hits series wasn't going to happen, but could've done with a few more.

I want more ...

budo jeru, Thursday, 16 May 2024 01:54 (one year ago)

Yeah, was only to be expected.

Oh, and there's a v.long version of "I want more ..." on the last one!

Mark G, Thursday, 16 May 2024 09:56 (one year ago)

The missing word was "this" (anag).

But you have to get that "Uncut" as there's a free covermount of one track from each of the five volumes so far released.
