Your NOMINATIONS for the Most OMGWTFLOL Singles Of The '90s

Ok, I'm gonna try one of these myself.

This is NOT a Worst Singles Of The '90s poll. These should be singles that BEGUILE, that fascinate, that are inexplicable, weird, lovable, snuggleable, that are OMGWTFLOL not EWWWWW.

Everybody gets two nominations each. And they have to be singles.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 29 August 2004 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

this thread is OMGWTFLOL(ROFFLE)

artdamages (artdamages), Sunday, 29 August 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Suggestions for this poll continue on the old thread: Songs From The 90s that would make you go OMGWTFLOL if they were on the poll

My noms:

Jimmy Mod, Man About Towne (ModJ), Sunday, 29 August 2004 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 29 August 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Gerardo - Latin Til I Die (Oye Como Va)
Tag Team - Whoomp! There It Is

Mike Salmo (salmo), Sunday, 29 August 2004 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Two OMGWTFLOL Singles Of The '90s:

K7 - "Come Baby Come"
Seven Mary Three - "Cumbersome"

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 29 August 2004 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

They had TWO?

Kim (Kim), Sunday, 29 August 2004 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

at least! "You're A God" and "Everything You Want"

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 29 August 2004 22:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll take door number two please.

Kim (Kim), Sunday, 29 August 2004 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

well which of the other two are you getting rid of? Y'all makin' this harder than necessary. I'm trying to scientifically deduce what song from the '90s busts the most guts here.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 29 August 2004 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Well since Tag Team his inexplicably been disputed to be a surprising top pick, I suppose I'll jettison that one.

Kim (Kim), Sunday, 29 August 2004 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

"How Do You Like It Now" by Stompin' Tom, I remember it being very popular in 91/92.

Pram - "Radio freak in a storm"

daavid (daavid), Sunday, 29 August 2004 22:19 (twenty-one years ago)

"Rump Shaker" is classic. But I could never imagine it on a list of ILM seriousness, plus it's not so uncool its cool... yet. Then again I may be wrong. The 90's have made their way into the upswing of the VH1 cycle.

It's amazing that the network has gotten into the business of retro-fad-ism. The cycle goes something like this:
1. I love that song.
2. It's been overplayed and everybody loves it, so now I hate it.
3. I hate that song and I can't believe anybody every liked it in the first place.
4. Wait, everybody hates that song, and I used to love it. I love it again.
4. Go back to 2.

Mike Salmo (salmo), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 30 August 2004 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Republica - "Ready to go"

I was trying to remember this!

briania (briania), Monday, 30 August 2004 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I may have misunderstood this poll when I first read the thread. So I might change my mind about "X French Tee Shirt."

But I'd like to add "Peaches," Presidents of the United States of America.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 30 August 2004 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, the more I think about it, "X French Tee Shirt" is perfect for this. I love that song.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 30 August 2004 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

And scratch "Peaches" and give me "Supermodel (You Better Work)" by RuPaul instead.

So, to sum up:

1. Shudder to Think, "X French Tee Shirt"
2. RuPaul, "Supermodel (You Better Work)"

Sorry I change my mind so easily!

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 30 August 2004 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Sir Mix-a-Lot - "Cakeboy"
B-Rock and tha Bizz - "My Baby Daddy"

Both guaranteed jaw-droppers. Note that Mix was about a decade ahead of the curve on the whole "metrosexual" thang, and that "My Baby Daddy" made xgau's Top 10 singles of the 90's list, despite the peculiar fact that (at least according to his search engine) he never even Choice Cutted it.

And I'm not even sure this is 90's, but does anyone recall an early RuPaul track entitled "Star Booty"? It was a fave back in my college radio days, but I've never been able to find it since...

Jesse Fuchs (Jesse Fuchs), Monday, 30 August 2004 22:36 (twenty-one years ago)

The Adventures of Stevie V tune is actually "Dirty Cash (Money Talks)", just to clarify.

And I'm disappointed by the lack of Cathy Dennis and Black Box!

Heres mine:

Babylon Zoo: "Spaceman"
John Safran: "Not the Sunscreen Song" (shits all over the Lurhmann versh)

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 05:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Uh oh, #2 might not be a 90s track dammit. Let me check.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 05:52 (twenty-one years ago)

It is! 1998. woot.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 05:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, um... Trio's "Da Da Da" came out in the 80s, doods.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 05:58 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't really understand this poll

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 08:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Do you hate fun?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

no i think i just misinterpreted it despite Anthony's explanation

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I really like how I don't completely understand it. It's more carefree and crazy and fun that way.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 1 September 2004 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Dr Octagon - "Earth People"

billstevejim, Wednesday, 1 September 2004 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I say let Trio stay.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 1 September 2004 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I really like how I don't completely understand it. It's more carefree and crazy and fun that way.

That's kind of what I'm going for. Hell, I don't understand it much myself. What songs will get CONSENSUS for something as uncertain and ephemeral as OMGWTFLOL? I'm really intrigued.

"Da Da Da" counts cuz it was reissued in the '90s for that Volkswagen ad. If someone voted for "Bohemian Rhapsody" it would count too. Plus, um, everything stays. If it doesn't belong people won't vote for it.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Scorpions - "Wind of Change"
Skid Row - "Wasted Time"
!!!

311 - Down
Snow - Informer

jake b. (cerybut), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Jesus Christ, how could I have forgotten DC Talk, the Glass Joe of hip-hop? Although I'd personally go for their collaboration with Carman, "Addicted to Jesus," which begins with a dialogue sequence that makes Amos 'n Andy sound positively urbane. Listen here if you must, but don't go around saying I didn't warn you.

Come to think of it, at least a solid third of Carman's 2-CD hits collection would beat any nomination on this least, including my own. But then again, he's got the best gimmick.

Jesse Fuchs (Jesse Fuchs), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 18:13 (twenty-one years ago)

311 - Down
Snow - Informer

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Friday, 3 September 2004 10:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Shame about BeatmastersBoo, but I really don't have the memories for this sort of thing. I like 'em all, I thought this was about being too absurd/hated to be underdog choices or something.

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Friday, 3 September 2004 11:02 (twenty-one years ago)

ok maybe i should change mine to:

Green Jelly 'Three Little Pigs'
Crash Test Dummies 'mmmm mmmm mmmm mmmm'

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 3 September 2004 11:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Dammit, now I have the Crash Test's refrain in my head.

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Friday, 3 September 2004 11:50 (twenty-one years ago)

you'll be voting high for that on the proper poll then?
