Have they always sounded bad on cd? I've only heard them and had them on vinyl (which sound excellent).

If these are as good as the similar Dylan multi-format remasters, then we are in we for a treat.

They never sounded like shit, so I guess they're being fed through the Louderizer.

I just got Tago Mago on vinyl, is the sacd going to be one of these "better than the original!" recordings? I sure hope not.

phew. luckily i only already own tago mago on CD right now.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 20:22 (twenty years ago) link

Whenever I get a Can song on my iPod, it is remarkably quieter and softer than the other songs on the iPod, forcing me to adjust the car/whatever volumne, so even if all the discs get is a once-over with the Louderizer, I'll be happy. But if they get cleaned up as well as those Fleetwood Mac discs, then we're in for a treat, since I still hear all sorts of stuff on the Mac remasters that I never knew existed in the first place.

come to think of it, in the 80's i did have a couple can cds. the one with "can can" on it and one other one. they sounded fine. i don't think i had heard them on vinyl before buying them(or since)though.

joseph pot (STINKOR™), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 20:49 (twenty years ago) link

I'd hardly consider myself to be a vinyl snob, but in the case of Can the cds have always sounded considerably inferior to the original records. Here's hoping for the remasters !

Brad Laner (Brad Laner), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 20:51 (twenty years ago) link

spoon vinyl rulz.

Really? I only have one LP on Spoon, but the vinyl's not all that hot, especially in contrast to my original pressings of other Can LPs on United Artists and Virgin.

Vic Funk, Wednesday, 1 September 2004 20:53 (twenty years ago) link

I've owned can records on virgin, ua, and spoon and they all sounded fine. most of the early stuff i have now is spoon 80's-era vinyl. i think i even had a record on Receiver! but i could be mistaken.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 20:57 (twenty years ago) link

Oh, I thought you meant the Spoon vinyl reissues from 2003. That's what I have for Monster Movie.

Vic Funk, Wednesday, 1 September 2004 21:14 (twenty years ago) link

yeah, I've never heard recent vinyl reissues. who made them? I know I saw them all over the place for a while. I mean, were they German-made or did someone else do it for them. I think my copy of Out Of Reach was on Receiver. Or maybe another Charly-like label. I know I still have a UA Tago Mago and maybe Soon Over Babaluma as well. Did Virgin put out Future Days? My mind is gone. I will have to look sometime.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 21:19 (twenty years ago) link

I'm kinda pissed that Future Days is slipping beneath the radar again, too, because I'm really only interested in the three Damo albums.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 21:45 (twenty years ago) link

Ha ha...it occurs to me that if Spoon are doing this to cash in, they'll probably see half the orders come in for remastered CD's and the other half will be an upsurge in vinyl orders!

I picture ILMers fencing each other brandishing remastered discs vs. vinyl albums...

Bimble (bimble), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 21:48 (twenty years ago) link

well, i mean, if they sound waaaaaay better or something, then I guess it would be cool. But I honestly have always thought that all those records sounded GREAT to begin with. It is more understandable when the original artifact was mixed wrong or something. And even then someone can fuck up a remastering job and make it too shiny, too whatever, you know. (iggy pop to thread)

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 21:52 (twenty years ago) link

when someone gets one tell us if they sound "waaaaaay" better because otherwise I will just buy the old castoff versions at reduced prices

artdamages (artdamages), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 21:55 (twenty years ago) link

why is Can vinyl always roughly $20+? I have never witnessed this phenomenon with any other artist, import or no. It's just ridiculous, it's not like the albums are longer, or harder to manufacture or anything like that. But a big reason I don't own the entire Can discography is because that shit is overpriced EVERYWHERE.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 1 September 2004 22:17 (twenty years ago) link

My CD copy of Future Days was cheaply manufactured, I can hold it up to my eye and easily see right through it (way more so than with other CDs that don't have a thick label). Once it got a couple small scratches it skipped all the time. I managed to make a CD-R copy of it which has played fine for years.

wetmink (wetmink), Thursday, 2 September 2004 01:20 (twenty years ago) link

Have they always sounded bad on cd?

well, i think they've always sounded poor... on the vinyl i've owned and the cds. i'm not that much of a vinyl junky anyway but my copy of Ege Bamyasi has seen far better days. all of the cds i've heard have low volume mastering and a thin slightly muddy sound. all of the cd issues have come from the same original cd master and the booklets haven't changed.

the last 're-issue' of these was at the time of the remix cd release and was, basically, just letting people know that they were still there.

I'd imagine that this was just the start of the re-issuing cycle, with 4 more in the next batch and so on. Let's hope they include the Tago/Ege era singles and B-Sides that are still only available on boots.

Soon Over is the most underrated Can record, and IMO fits right in with the Damo records. I've posted on this many times before, but "Chain Reaction"/"Quantum Physics" was as good as Can got, perhaps as good as anyone got.

a very kind offer and very possibly true. still like cds better than vinyl overall, though.

but "Chain Reaction"/"Quantum Physics" was as good as Can got, perhaps as good as anyone got

definitely up there with the rest of the things i love best.

phil turnbull (philT), Thursday, 2 September 2004 04:11 (twenty years ago) link

Soon... isn't all that hot, really (this is coming from someone who loves Saw Delight).

Are the last batch (1998) of CDs really that terrible sounding to you, or are you judging on the basis of the Restless ones that came out in the late-80s? Cuz I've always thought the '98 reissues sounded great and I don't understand these complaints of "too quiet". Future Days is supposed to be quiet.

Vic Funk, Thursday, 2 September 2004 11:37 (twenty years ago) link

I completely fail to see the point of this. Many of these rekkids were cheaply recorded, in some cases, I believe direct to 2-track. This is part of the appeal for me. I have the japanese "can box" set which IIRC is the same as the spoon reissues, only in double cd cases. The sound on these cds is basically the recordings converted to digital format w/o fucking around. The fear is they they'll be sent through the louderiser, as mentioned above, which will fucking suck.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 2 September 2004 11:45 (twenty years ago) link

Jimmybommy JimmyK'KANG (Nick Southall), Thursday, 2 September 2004 11:50 (twenty years ago) link

Disco-period Can rules! Saw Delight/S-T etc etc are absolutely the best stuff they ever did.

I agree that the CDs sound crap - not enough bass is one problem, on the other hand I share Norman's concerns that they might be ruined.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 2 September 2004 12:02 (twenty years ago) link

More bass is U&K.

Jimmybommy JimmyK'KANG (Nick Southall), Thursday, 2 September 2004 12:03 (twenty years ago) link

"more bass" might not actually even be present on the masters of some of the records in any meaningful way. I remember playing "Mother Sky" at a gig we were doinf the pa for, and no matter how much you turned up the bass on the desk channels, the kick remained inaudible. Some of these records were recorded in incredibly primitive studios, by people who weren't all that competent. You cannot magic into existence that which is not there (OK, you can dub extra tracks in, but do you want that?) besides which, if they do maximise the music it will suck, b/c I have never heard any music improved by this pro-cess. My fave can track to-day = "hunters and collectors"

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 2 September 2004 12:19 (twenty years ago) link

Until I hear them I am going to daydream the difference as being as significant as that between the original Miles Davis CDs and the 1997-2001 remasters btw WHEN THE FUCK IS JACK JOHNSON OUT?

Jimmybommy JimmyK'KANG (Nick Southall), Thursday, 2 September 2004 12:21 (twenty years ago) link

In the recently opened Rock'n'Pop Museum in Gronau, Germany, they've reconstructed the Ton studios that Can started using in 1971:
http://www.rock-popmuseum.de/contero/gallery/Bilder/canstudio.jpg
Now you can see with your own eyes how 'incredibly primitive' it actually was!

Jimmybommy JimmyK'KANG (Nick Southall), Thursday, 2 September 2004 12:46 (twenty years ago) link

From memory my '97 Tago Mago CD has some horrible sounding clipping going on during one of the tracks. I'll listen to it again soon and let you know if I'm just imaging it.

However, I sure hope that "TEH LOUDNESS" button is not what this remaster is all about, just some tweaking and re-recording is all that is required. The dynamics (and therefore relative quietness) of the tracks is one of the results of the straight to tape recording technique - and is the reason the recordings sound as good as they do.

My mom is a bit crazy about Can. Our entire dining room has posters of Can all of the place. I like them when they have a groove like "Turtles Have Short Legs". It's also a song about turtles. And I like Parappa The Rapper a lot, and I play the second part over and over again. I wish I could find a way to make the driving instructor not sing.

I think turtles are very cute, and more songs should be written about them.

I have to go to school now (even though I'm going to be late because my mom was busy ordering all the Can reissues online so I had to wait until she was done before she was ready to drive me. I hope Mr. Rossadini is nice to me when I give him the parental notice this time), but you guys should tell your favorite bands to make more turtle songs!

Never owned Can on CD so can't comment on relative merits compared to vinyl. However I've owned three vinyl copies of "Soon Over Babaluma", - on Celluloid, Spoon and United Artists - and can't believe that it isn't possible to improve the sound quality on, in particular, "Splash" and "Quantum Physics". Oh and Irmin Schmidt rules "Soon Over Babaluma" for "Chain Reaction/Quantum Physics" alone

one month passes...
So, did anyone else get any of these? I just got Tago Mago tonight, and from the direct comparisons I can make with the old version ("Mushroom" and "Oh Yeah" on a couple of compilations), it is REALLY good, to my ear anyway. Louder, clearer, and it strips away a good deal of background hiss. I think I might well re-buy Monster Movie and Ege Bamyasi on this evidence, the latter will really benefit from this if it's up to the same standard.

Sadly, it does not include the "Turtles Have Short Legs" remix disc as promised upthread.

I'm not sure Monster Movie benefits much, but Tago Mago and Ege Bamyasi are definitely much better soundwise... so much murk is stripped away, it's pretty amazing.

Jason J, Friday, 15 October 2004 15:49 (twenty years ago) link

just got mine today..

these re-issues sound f*ing brilliant. there's no real messing around with the thrust of the original mixing - they just sound punchier, more urgent and just plain "there". and no tape hiss. great stuff sound-wise indeed.

the booklets are pretty good - lots of never before seen pics and quite lovely round-cornered jewel cases - but it seems like they've missed the chance once again to add some sort of definitive text. and they haven't included any extra studio material - the 2 wonderfull singles from the tago and ege era aren't anywhere to be seen even if they've never been properly released on cd at all.

but these are minor quibbles. i'm fairly biased as i've hardly ever gone a month in my life without playing ege bamyasi at least once but hearing these new ones makes me want to play them again and again.

phil turnbull (philT), Monday, 25 October 2004 04:27 (twenty years ago) link

I can't stand tracks tacked onto the end of albums, so that's probably a good thing for me.

I don't have the money to spend rebuying albums, so if anyone is willing to host these on sl*k I'd be eternally gratefull.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Monday, 25 October 2004 09:40 (twenty years ago) link

DVD Audio plays on most DVD players.

Er, not really. Yes, the Dolby Digital 5.1 mix or the PCM stereo mix which many DVD-A discs include can be played on a DVD-Video machine, but the multi-channel hi-res PCM mix (which is supposedly the point of DVD-A, just like the pure DSD-derived stereo or surround mix is the point of SACD) won't play.

I'm pretty dubious about the new formats but if their existence means remastering is taken a bit more seriously than shoving everything through a TC Finaliser with a big bass boost, then fine; if the by-product of reworking stuff for the niche SACD/DVD-A market is a really fantastic-sounding stereo PCM downmix (playable on DVD-V or CD), so be it. Of course it'll be £15.99 or something.

The Wire was fairly scathing about the artwork on these Can reissues while loving the sound. It's about time I owned Ege Bamyasi...but I'll wait for the reductions.

The Wire was fairly scathing about the artwork on these Can reissues while loving the sound. It's about time I owned Ege Bamyasi...but I'll wait for the reductions

the images in the booklets are great - most i've never seen - but the text is pretty unenlightening. it's credited to David Stubbs, gives some small details of why the album was made and then tries to put the songs in some sort of historical context. it's all been said before and in more detail elsewhere. there is one page by Bobby Gillespie where he talks about jamming with them. and each booklet has a page of 'ads' for all the Can and related solo cds! why? what i would have preffered is something similar to the excellent text in the Henry Cow re-issues with intimate personal details. wont hold my breath then.

well, I have found a problem, dammit

ege bamyasi : end of 'One More Night'

on the original vinyl there's an abrupt edit to end the song after a little bluesy guitar phrase : the abruptness has always sounded perfect to me and fits in with the mechanistic rhythm.

on the 1st issue of the cd a slight fade is used over the top of this guitar phrase but it still stops abruptly, even if the impact is lessened.

but on the new remaster a full fade out occurs with 6 seconds to go so that you hardly hear the guitar figure at all.

i know it's not earth shattering but it's still annoying.

So, I'm getting all the remastered cds exept for "Soundtracks";
I'd like to order "Future Days" while I'm at it in one of its current
incarnations (Spooncd9, released 1989) or (Mute, MUE690552, released 2002). Allknowing ILX people, which is better?

Or do I just need to be patient and wait for the next reissue?

Don't suggest vinyl please...

Why the bafflement? The majority here realize Can were one of the greatest bands ever. It's been scientifically proven.

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 4 November 2004 13:26 (twenty years ago) link

I've also never totally warmed to "Bel Air". I've always thought it was one of the least interesting long-form Can pieces (my faves being "Halleluwah" and "Chain Reaction"/"Quantum Physics").

I wish I was more surprised that people love Can, but I'm not. They're one of those bands who live up to any hype people throw on them, and seem more "relevant" all the time.

Dominique (dleone), Thursday, 4 November 2004 13:32 (twenty years ago) link

Can = overrated around these parts.

I don't mean that combatively at all; they're a great band and I credit Tago Mago with opening my ears to a lot of really amazing sounds, but there's just SO MUCH adulation for em here. I guess the 'problem' is that, as music dorks, we're going to like and dislike different things about their records--no agreement, no consensus on what specifically is the best Can album/track/moment, but an overall feeling of "fucking awesome band."

Can are probably in my top 3 of favourite bands of all time but, apart from "Monster Movie", they never put an album that didn't have at least one glaring dud on it. The reasons why Pashmina likes "Bel Air" and they reasons why I don't are probably the same, knowing our respective tastes!

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 5 November 2004 11:47 (twenty years ago) link

Right let me see:

Good: Gommorha; Blue Bag (Inside Paper); The Empress and the Ukraine King; Mother Upduff; Cutaway (bits of it); Connection; Fall of Another Year; Ethnological Forgery Series No. 8; Ibis

OK: Doko E; I'm Too Leise; TV Spot; Ethnological Forgery Series No. 7

Shite: LH 702 (Nairobi/Munchen); Musette; Ethnological Forgery Series No. 27; Ethnological Forgery Series No. 10; Ethnological Forgery Series No. 36; Cutaway (most of it); Transcendental Express

I suppose you could bin it - the version of "Ibis" on the CD is an edit when they could easily have edited most of "Cutaway".

I hope they get the rest of these done quickly. I've kind of like Can, but never really paid them the attention they deserve. I found I had a copy of the free ltd edn sampler CD which they were giving away when the albums came out on CD back in 97. It's weird - the sound on the sampler is absolutely thunderous, yet my CD of Future Days is really thin. I'm totally blown away by 'Sunshine Day and Night' from 'Saw Delight' at the moment.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 8 November 2004 14:55 (twenty years ago) link

But the full version of "Doko E" that runs for 20 minutes is pretty amazing - Damo getting more and more freaked as the thing churns relentlessly. The edit on "Unlimited Edition" doesn't do that song justice.

Lefty, Monday, 8 November 2004 15:16 (twenty years ago) link

I wonder if the coming remasters kickstart a widespread reappraisal of the post-Damo Can albums.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 8 November 2004 16:17 (twenty years ago) link

Unlimited Edition was my first Can album, actually. As such, I take a different view of it. For one, its sequencing makes it a fairly hallucinogenic listen — which is kind of cool, and renders otherwise superfluous tracks like "Musette" and some of the Ethnological Forgery Series much more interesting, I think (don't remember exactly which one it was, but I like the faux-Dixieland number myself). For an odds n' sods record, it holds together rather well, I think.

As a side-note, is it just me or is "Gommorha" almost an exact rip-off of another track ca. Babaluma? "Dizzy Dizzy" maybe? I can't remember exactly — but I'm guessing it's from the same sessions.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Thursday, 18 November 2004 16:33 (twenty years ago) link

So, where are these? Haven't seen any in the stores yet.

donut christ (donut), Thursday, 18 November 2004 20:01 (twenty years ago) link

NTI: going over "Gommorha" in my head, the song that it reminds me most of is a section of "Bel Air", with the descending chord pattern (I think played on bass in "Bel Air").

Dominique (dleone), Thursday, 18 November 2004 20:21 (twenty years ago) link

Hmmm. Could be as well, but I'm almost completely certain that one of the Babaluma tracks has what is at least an almost-identical arrangement to "Gommorha"'s. That they would do this—use the arrangement for one cut and the harmonic progression for another—would not surprise me in the least, given their pedigree.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Thursday, 18 November 2004 20:29 (twenty years ago) link

I noticed that too, NTI, I expect "Gommorha" is just an excerpt from a Babaluma jam where they returned to the earlier chords. Don't the liners mention 1974? I forget...

It sounds very spontaneous, you can hear everyone settling into the sequence, noodling about.

(Jon L), Thursday, 18 November 2004 20:36 (twenty years ago) link

Dec 1973, apparently, for the song, which I guess puts it right in line with when they would have been making Babaluma.

Dominique (dleone), Thursday, 18 November 2004 21:02 (twenty years ago) link

Do we know if it is, in fact, "Dizzy Dizzy"?

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Thursday, 18 November 2004 21:03 (twenty years ago) link

I think you've got a particularly rarified but valid interview question there.

(Jon L), Thursday, 18 November 2004 21:08 (twenty years ago) link

It doesn't sound anything like "Dizzy Dizzy"! However the intro section of "Cutaway" does sound like "Dizzy Dizzy" and so was obviously not recorded in May 1969, (there's another section too with synth on it that could not have come from 1969). Then again, bits of "Ibis" sound like "Dizzy Dizzy" too - tho possibly the bits edited out of the CD version as discussed above.

De Doo Doo Doo De Da Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 19 November 2004 13:32 (twenty years ago) link

I think Pashmina means shoved through a T1 Ultramaximiser or some such to achieve maximum loudness and flatten the dynamics. Regrettably standard procedure with many reissue projects - making 70s live-to-tape sound as impactful as Destiny's Child (and just as airless).

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Friday, 19 November 2004 13:35 (twenty years ago) link

Given that "the albums were all remastered from the original master tapes and were overseen and attended by Holger, Irmin and Jono Podmore", I'm hoping that Holger and Irmin pooh-poohed that idea - can't speak for this Podmore fellow tho

De Doo Doo Doo De Da Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 19 November 2004 13:38 (twenty years ago) link

It doesn't sound anything like "Dizzy Dizzy"!

That's because it wasn't "Gommorah" that sounded like "Dizzy Dizzy" — upon revisiting my CD collection last night, I realized it was the last track on Unlimited Edition I was thinking about, "Ibis". If you take the keyboard sound off of it and add Michael Karoli's vocals and violin, it's virtually the exact same track — same beat, same staccato guitar licks, everything. Though it dates from Sept. '74, which seems a little late, it sounds as if it might be them finding their way into "Dizzy Dizzy"...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Friday, 19 November 2004 15:19 (twenty years ago) link

Have these things been dynamically maximised or not, does anyone know?

The dynamics sound similar.

If anything it sounds less processed than before - it's certainly less harsh and trebley than before.

My only gripe is there seems to be some kind of noise-reduction gate (or other noise reduection technique) which occasionaly gives a senation of "pumping".
