the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Thursday, 2 September 2004 16:30 (twenty years ago)

Incidently I should point out that I think "No Better Love" is going to be majorly slept on, which is really a pity. It's a helluva track (and it came out right around valentines day!)

So did Gretchen Wilson come out of nowhere or what? As it is I don't quite get the success.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 2 September 2004 18:53 (twenty years ago)

Dude, it's four out of five. And it's ironic that I go affirmative in the most non-affirmative year of my life. :-)

“Love Me for a Little While” over "All Nite (Don't Stop)"?

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Thursday, 2 September 2004 19:26 (twenty years ago)

DJ, do you actually think "No Better Love" is better than "Friday Night"? It's great and all, but I think "Friday Night" beats it to hell.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Thursday, 2 September 2004 19:29 (twenty years ago)

Actually, a couple Skye Sweetnam and maybe Montgomery Gentry singles should probably be on my list, too, though if I wind up voting for their album or Gretchen's I probably won't vote for their singles. Big and Rich I might make an exception and vote for singles and album both, though.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 2 September 2004 19:34 (twenty years ago)

The danceable "post-punk" guitar-rock
The enthusiastic rap
The vulnerable R&B
"Toxic"

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 2 September 2004 19:39 (twenty years ago)

oh yeah and John Mayer's "Clarity" (fighting with "Toxic" and "Burn" for my single of the year, it'll probably depend on my state of mind at the end of the year and if something better comes along)

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 2 September 2004 19:41 (twenty years ago)

Girls Aloud - The show
Rachel Stevens - Some girls
Mountain Goats - Palmcorder Yajna

Mylo - Destroy rock n'roll

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 2 September 2004 19:47 (twenty years ago)

'Toxic' and 'Some Girls' are probably mine. Some other stuff I have no doubt forgotten over nine months. Oh, and 'Run' by Ghostface.

x-post Yeah, 'These Words' is good too, but I'm probably too embarassed by my love of it to say it's one of my year faves.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Thursday, 2 September 2004 19:51 (twenty years ago)

Oh, lots of things really. If 'Kim Wilde' by Charlotte Hatherley counts, I'll go for that.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 2 September 2004 19:55 (twenty years ago)

My top 5 of 04 (in no particular order):

Jay-Z "99 Problems"
Nina Sky "Move Your Body"
Modest Mouse "Float On"
Britney Spears "Toxic"
Kanye West "Jesus Walks"

IMHO this has been a good year on the radio dial.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 2 September 2004 19:56 (twenty years ago)

Oh shit, add a last minute additional 6th song on there with Cee-Lo's "The One"!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 2 September 2004 19:57 (twenty years ago)

I still really hate that Modest Mouse single, even if the album wasn't all bad.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 2 September 2004 19:58 (twenty years ago)

Do most radio stations play that shortened version of "Jesus Walks" that leaves out the last (best) verse? It's not that long of a song, I don't know why they insist on cutting that out.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 2 September 2004 19:58 (twenty years ago)

They cut Mayer's girly shrieks at the end of "Clarity" in the radio edit. They fear evolution.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 2 September 2004 19:59 (twenty years ago)

Jay Z “99 Problems”
The Streets “Fit and You Know It”
Britney Spears “Toxic”

Franz Ferdinand “Take Me Out”
Twista with Jamie Foxx and Kayne West “Slow Jamz”

Not That Chucj, Thursday, 2 September 2004 20:13 (twenty years ago)

hip-hop radio is hurting right now, at least in nyc. "lean back" keeps getting played by default cuz i think pataki passed a law saying only 3456 usher tracks can be played per hour. what a h8r.

i can't believe you like "turn me on," chuck. it's "no letting go" without any heart or charm.

my list (in the order they appear on my mid-year singles mix):

1. Big & Rich, "Real World"
2. Britney, "Toxic"
3. Justus Kohncke, "Timecode"
4. Chromeo, "Needy Girl"
5. Rachel Stevens, "Some Girls"
6. Cobra Killer, "High Is the Pine"
7. Loretta Lynn, "Portland, Oregon"
8. Dios, "Starting Five"
9. The Fall, "Janet Vs Johnny"
10. Cottonbelly, "By Your Side"
11. Incubus, "Talk Shows on Mute"
12. Atreyu, "Right Side of the Bed"
13. Alicia Keys, "You Don't Know My Name (Reggae Mix)"

22. The Intelligence, "Telephone Wires"

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 2 September 2004 20:51 (twenty years ago)

I'm also digging the Headman Rave Mix of Matinée by Franz Ferdinand.

It's on his wicked new comp on Eskimo, "Dance Modern". think it was released on a very limited scale on vinyl too.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 2 September 2004 20:55 (twenty years ago)

Chuck - Yanc3y said *exactly* what I was going to say to you about the Kevin Lyttle track. I don't get it either.

Also I meant to put R. Kelly's "Happy People" on my list, and the Morrissey track might make it too after I listen to it a few more times.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Thursday, 2 September 2004 21:04 (twenty years ago)

the rasmus "in the shadows"

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 2 September 2004 21:15 (twenty years ago)

DJ, do you actually think "No Better Love" is better than "Friday Night"? It's great and all, but I think "Friday Night" beats it to hell.

I don't think its "better" neccessarily but I played the hell out of "Friday Night" when I first got it. Also I think "No Better Love" isn't getting enough attention.

I'm with Chuck re: Kevin Lyttle. Dude's voice is sweeeeeeet. I wouldn't say I like it more than the dancehall cuts I mentioned, but its beautiful in its own way.

djdee2005, Thursday, 2 September 2004 22:00 (twenty years ago)

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 3 September 2004 01:01 (twenty years ago)

yeah I assume there's some level to the song I'm missing, cuz all I can remember is an annoying hook and a guy talking about rubberbands.

oops, and "timecode"!

scott pl. (scott pl.), Friday, 3 September 2004 01:09 (twenty years ago)

Somebody recommend me a pop single from this year that is nothing but beats and wails and has no personality to it (I'm serious, I think most of the pop figures this year should be boiled in oil -- and "Toxic" is severely overrated.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 3 September 2004 01:12 (twenty years ago)

move ya body?

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 3 September 2004 01:14 (twenty years ago)

I like it but its pretty generic

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 3 September 2004 01:14 (twenty years ago)

Nina Sky, right? I've heard good things, I will keep that in mind -- often I appreciate the 'generic' more than the specifically monumental.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 3 September 2004 01:15 (twenty years ago)

i'm not one of those people that have lists prepared and everyone keeps reminding me about songs I like. maybe thats what these threads are for.

but has anyone heard "Ridin Big (yo)"? The hook (or one of them) is "the hardest decision I've got to make is which car I'm gonna take when I *indecipherable word*"

artdamages (artdamages), Friday, 3 September 2004 01:16 (twenty years ago)

maybe you should find some enya techno remixes, ned

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 3 September 2004 01:16 (twenty years ago)

Hahah. Depends on the remixer. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 3 September 2004 01:16 (twenty years ago)

Oh that Nina Sky song has personality. Granted it is a bland kind of personality, but they are cute in their amateurishness.

artdamages (artdamages), Friday, 3 September 2004 01:18 (twenty years ago)

"Ridin' Big Yo" kinda sucks, at least as a first single.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 3 September 2004 01:21 (twenty years ago)

I disagree wholeheartedly, but don't have the time to say why.

artdamages (artdamages), Friday, 3 September 2004 01:23 (twenty years ago)

Mouse On Mars - Wipe That Sound

It's the sort of thing I'm sure even kids who like Kelis or Beyonce or other names that are so daft they make mine look normal could get into.

its not a single but Felix's "Ready 2 Wear" should've been #1 all over the world.

kevin says relax (daddy warbuxx), Friday, 3 September 2004 05:51 (twenty years ago)

Loads of great songs this year, but so few of them singles...

Feist - "Mushaboom"
Ce'Cile - "Hot like we"
Miss Ting - "Me ago laff"

Jacob (Jacob), Friday, 3 September 2004 07:05 (twenty years ago)

Oh god, totally forgot "Get on dis motorcycle"

Jacob (Jacob), Friday, 3 September 2004 07:06 (twenty years ago)

There's quite a lot I forgot, but I've decided that I need to hear 'Haedsprung' at full volume in a club while drunk off my ass and then I might add it to my list.

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Friday, 3 September 2004 12:28 (twenty years ago)

Ned, you will probably hate it with the boiling fury of a thousand dying suns, but have you heard the Yellowcard song?

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Friday, 3 September 2004 13:55 (twenty years ago)

Oh god, totally forgot "Get on dis motorcycle"

Not a single folks.

djdee2005, Friday, 3 September 2004 18:18 (twenty years ago)

Milan's "Dip It Low" seconded as a fucking great single. I don't get why everyone's picking "Toxic" instead of "Everytime" by Britney tho, and why no "Tush" love?

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Saturday, 4 September 2004 05:44 (twenty years ago)

Ned, you will probably hate it with the boiling fury of a thousand dying suns, but have you heard the Yellowcard song?

Not yet -- and the description I've heard of them as 'emo with violin' rather troubles my tender soul.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 4 September 2004 05:47 (twenty years ago)

Sterling related post

Dip It Low = wayyy overrated boring not all that special fun but not exactly top 20 material.

Good question re: TUsh though. THat single was hot.

djdee2005, Saturday, 4 September 2004 06:12 (twenty years ago)

Re "Dip It Low" - I'm trying to whether I work out the original or the official released version more. The original is more melodramatic with the spare beats striking like thunderclaps, but the second version is easier to dance to (and has the great bass-driven Fabo rap section). I think it's an excellent single; it's not the monster that "Baby Boy" was because it's much more fragile, but that's one of its nice qualities.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 4 September 2004 08:19 (twenty years ago)

It's much sexier than Baby Boy.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Saturday, 4 September 2004 15:33 (twenty years ago)

If I heard more emo that sounded like Yellowcard, I would like more emo.

Sterl, people are picking "Toxic" over "Everytime" because "Toxic" is a decent song that's overrated while "Everytime" is fucking horrible nonsense that really should be taken out back, shot, chopped up into little pices, put into a sack, set on fire, scraped into ANOTHER sack with some rocks, pissed on, then dropped off of a bridge.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Saturday, 4 September 2004 16:18 (twenty years ago)

why no "Tush" love?

Well I mentioned it, but there is less "Tush" love because there is a lot of 'Tush" hate. See the Ghostface threads where a bunch of people say its the worst song on Pretty Toney.

btw thanks everyone that big upped "I Can Only be That Woman"

artdamages (artdamages), Saturday, 4 September 2004 16:19 (twenty years ago)

If I heard more emo that sounded like Yellowcard, I would like more emo.

Yellowcard are kinda hinting at the pop-punk/emo covering cheesy 80s sdtk hits phenomenon. Except it's their song. I hope 'emo' moves further in this direction.

artdamages (artdamages), Saturday, 4 September 2004 16:21 (twenty years ago)

'Galang' came out last year, though perhaps people know that.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 4 September 2004 17:02 (twenty years ago)

I don't get why everyone's picking "Toxic" instead of "Everytime" by Britney tho

I like both but "Toxic" doesn't require one to care about Britney-drama. Plus it's like stealth-Kish Kash where "Everytime" is more like a power ballad that never brings in the oomph (I'll take "My Immortal" over it).

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 4 September 2004 17:10 (twenty years ago)

"Everytime" made my low 60s.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Saturday, 4 September 2004 19:07 (twenty years ago)

i'm not sure that i've heard "no better love" (i certainly will, and soon), but somebody should've mentioned the young gunz's "friday night" by now. and, as any fule knos, phoenix's "if i ever feel better" is way better than "everthing is everything". another thing that i really like that no-one has mentioned is marques houston's "i like that". the word "better" appears four times in this paragraph.

m. (mitchlnw), Saturday, 4 September 2004 21:36 (twenty years ago)

its not a single but Felix's "Ready 2 Wear" should've been #1 all over the world.

It will be the next one, with a Benny Benassi remix.

'Galang' came out last year

And again on XL, in a few weeks' time.

JoB (JoB), Saturday, 4 September 2004 22:14 (twenty years ago)

People, did we do this one for nothing then?

JoB (JoB), Saturday, 4 September 2004 22:16 (twenty years ago)

I'm also digging the Headman Rave Mix of Matinée by Franz Ferdinand.

Ronan, is this the same thing as the "headman vocal mix" that was on that colette comp? a handful of indiekids @ k1ss & make up (one of whom had come up to me at various points in my set w/"play some more rock" & "stop playing dance music"!) expressed how much better they thought it was than the original!

etc, Saturday, 4 September 2004 22:29 (twenty years ago)

Probably not because the one on the Headman mix album is, in fact, a Rave Dub and does not contain the full vocal.

JoB (JoB), Saturday, 4 September 2004 22:47 (twenty years ago)

didn't know it was a dub, sorry.

etc, Saturday, 4 September 2004 23:06 (twenty years ago)

others not mentioned -

fabolous - breathe
cut copy - future
sia - breathe me (four tet remix)
cassius henry ft freeway - the one
the game ft kanye west & ludacris - whole city behind us
silvah bullet - se7en
infinite livez - adventures of the lactating man
nas - thief's theme

Mil (Mil), Saturday, 4 September 2004 23:08 (twenty years ago)

Shamefully:

Dizzee - Stand Up Tall
Busted - Air Hostess
EIB - Torpedoes (okay, I am way more embarassed abt this than anyone here can like imagine, but I still can't hate this)
Jamelia - Thank You
Baxendale - Built This City
The Butterfly Stitch - You're my Kinda Girl
Lou Reed - Satelite of Love 2004
The Knife - Heartbeats

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Saturday, 4 September 2004 23:17 (twenty years ago)

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Sunday, 5 September 2004 00:56 (twenty years ago)

re: kevin lytle -- people call him "soca", but to me his single is totally (yeah, very very SWEET) brit-style r&b in the tradition of, like, junior and linx and mark morrison (and montell jordan, if he was british, and i forget who else before and since) (all of which had a certain caribbean lilt to begin with, of course) (but his album's a bore.)

chuck, Sunday, 5 September 2004 10:23 (twenty years ago)

I don't know if I can think of a more obviously terrible single this year than "Turn Me On" (well, besides that Nelly single anyway). The love that this song gets will puzzle me to the grave.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Sunday, 5 September 2004 16:32 (twenty years ago)

For me personally I've found this thread to be a lot more useful than the rolling singles thread.

billstevejim, Sunday, 5 September 2004 21:25 (twenty years ago)

I don't know if I can think of a more obviously terrible single this year than "Turn Me On" (well, besides that Nelly single anyway). The love that this song gets will puzzle me to the grave.

Whats so puzzling? He's got a sweet voice, the riddim is a pleasent carribean electro-ish bounce and its got a memorable melody.

djdee2005, Sunday, 5 September 2004 22:01 (twenty years ago)

He's got a [nothing] voice, the riddim is a [grating] carribean electro-ish bounce and its got a [lame fucking] melody.

I re-iterate: "La Isla Bonita" goes dancehall.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Monday, 6 September 2004 04:30 (twenty years ago)

You are ridiculous.

I don't know how anything abou this song could even be considered "grating", and his voice is sugary sweet...

djdee2005, Monday, 6 September 2004 04:33 (twenty years ago)

um, that dmx song (when i'm nothing) is almost four years old, isn't it?

Kevi Lyttle is completely harmless.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 00:44 (twenty years ago)

Kevi Lyttle is completely harmless.

since when is "completely harmless" a compliment?

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 01:54 (twenty years ago)

Would 'mostly harmless' be more apt?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 02:19 (twenty years ago)

"completley harmless" is a pretty huge compliment, considering the amount of music that is actively repugnant.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 12:51 (twenty years ago)

I'd be fine with "completely dull".

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 12:56 (twenty years ago)

"completely harmless" = FIGHT THE REAL ENEMY (Le Tigre, the lead singer from Modest Mouse, Britney's ballads, etc)

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 13:00 (twenty years ago)

It does seem a shame to me that Kevin Lyttle has apparently succeeded where Wayne Wonder failed and people like Chico never even got a chance - I mean, I like wimpy high-pitched Jamaican/Carribean pop as much as anyone else, but Kevin doesn't seem to be an obvious choice either in terms of quality or crossover potential. Why "Turn Me On" and not, say, Nicky B's "It's On"?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 13:08 (twenty years ago)

"It does seem a shame to me that Kevin Lyttle has apparently succeeded where Wayne Wonder failed"

"No Letting Go" was top 10 for me last year. Kevin Lyttle will be in my bottom 20 this year. Wayne Wonder's voice, the production, and the song itself are just that much better, imo.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 7 September 2004 13:14 (twenty years ago)

I was gonna say, how has Hevin Lyttle beaten Wayne Wonder? They've both scored one mainstream dancehall hit each.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 13:21 (twenty years ago)

Oh I totally agree - I meant in terms of commercial success slash longevity. I loved No Holding Back - totally underrated album in my opinion (or rather, not rated at all; nobody seemed to care about Wayne beyond the single).

xpost: Dan - Kevin seems to be having (relative) follow-up singles/album success, at least in Australia. And Kevin's hit was a fair bit bigger than Wayne's.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 13:24 (twenty years ago)

Anyway, my favourite singles:

Vybz Kartel - Picture This
Ada - Lovelace
TOK - Sex on my Mind
Rachel Stevens - Some Girls
Britney Spears - Toxic
Nina Sky - Move Ya Body
Ciara ft. Petey Pablo - Goodies
Houston - I Like That
Memphis Bleek - Everything's A Go
Kanye West ft. Twista - Slow Jamz (Collipark Remix)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 13:31 (twenty years ago)

I was thinking about this last night--

"Goodies" is such a bizarre #1 single. The "Milkshake"-esque aspects of the chorus are chart-friendly enough, but the song itself is this totally minimal semi-crunk number with a hook that's barely even there. I think it's fairly cool, but strange for such a smash hit.

I guess it's proof that the people will buy any song that has a semi-hot chick promising sex in very thinly-veiled metaphorical culinary terms.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 14:09 (twenty years ago)

Haha I love Tim's taste cuz I always agree with 80-90% of it and then its got something absolutely awful like that Houston song. Or perhaps its different bcuz maybe its not all over tha radio in Austr.?

djdee2005, Tuesday, 7 September 2004 14:18 (twenty years ago)

the people will buy any song that has a semi-hot chick promising sex

Looking for the goodies? Keep on looking 'cause they stay in the jar doesn't sound too promising to me...

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 14:26 (twenty years ago)

I like how Dan refuses to spell 'Kevin' correctly - shows how harmless he is.

I don't quite get the Houston single either, which just sounds charmless, banged-out and leaden. It also has Chingy, who I badly want to eviscerate after raping him with a jackhammer. Anywa, I had no idea 'Goodies' was no.1, but it's good alright. It's not too much weirder than 'Move Ya Body' anyway, which is lightweight, not-too special fun with an annoying middle-8 IMO.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 14:36 (twenty years ago)

Maroon 5 "This Love"
Slim Thug, Paul Wall & Mike Jones "Still Tippin"
Mike Jones f. Cyndee & Chelcie "Gone Head"
Young Buck f. David Banner & Lil Flip "Welcome To The South"
Akon f. Styles P "Locked Up"
Juvenile & the UTP Playas "Nolia Clap (remix)"
Slim Thug, TI & Bun B "Three Kings"
BG f. DJ Smurf "U Got It I Want It"
Pitbull f. Lil Jon "Culo"
JoJo "Leave (Get Out)"
Gemma Fox f Tinchey Stryder "Girlfriend Story (remix)"

Can't think of anymore right now. My favourites are in bold.

scg, Tuesday, 7 September 2004 15:05 (twenty years ago)

JoJo rocks.

In other hata news, has everyone heard the new Fefe Dobson single? THAT POOR GIRL.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 15:06 (twenty years ago)

I have not heard this. Do tell me more.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 15:07 (twenty years ago)

The Houston track grew on me, though god knows the last think the world needs right now is another young, annoying southern rapper.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 15:08 (twenty years ago)

Jojo disturbs me. 13 year olds shouldn't be allowed to be that sassy and disillusioned.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 15:09 (twenty years ago)

i completely forgot my favourite song of 2004 so far -

Three 6 Mafia f. Frayser Boy & Lil Wyte "Who Gives A Fuck Where You From"

xpost yes god forbid

scg, Tuesday, 7 September 2004 15:09 (twenty years ago)

In what universe are 13-year-olds not at the forefront of the sassy curve? They even have a magazine targeted towards them CALLED "Sassy!" (note exclamation point)

Ned, are you asking about JoJo or Fefe?

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 15:11 (twenty years ago)

I think JoJo is the white female little Michael Jackson of this generation, albeit without a family of third-wheels behind her.
'Levae' is good, but would be better without the shouts in the chorus - ow.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 15:23 (twenty years ago)

Aw, the shouts in the chorus are what make the song! (Also, they're very "aw, she's 13" cute.)

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 15:26 (twenty years ago)

"LEAVE OR FEEL THE FORCE OF MY TANTRUM!"

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 15:54 (twenty years ago)

Exactly!

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 15:54 (twenty years ago)

I had no idea anybody considered Kevin Lyttle's single "dancehall" at all till this thread. (And "La Isla Bonita" is one of Madonna's best hits ever, by the way. "Turn Me On" isn't quite as good as "La Isla Bonita goes dancehall" implies. But it's still good -- Give or take R Kelly, I can't think of a better r&b singing voice to hit the charts this year.)

chuck, Tuesday, 7 September 2004 16:42 (twenty years ago)

I mean, maybe his voice is *too* sweet for some people; that's what this thread implies. But since when is bubblegum a bad thing?

chuck, Tuesday, 7 September 2004 16:48 (twenty years ago)

Most dancehall and r&b these days isn't bubblegum *enough*, if you ask me! (Even when sung by 13 year olds.) (Actually, come to think of it, you know what "Turn Me On" is? It's like a real nice BILLY OCEAN single. And there are not nearly enough of those these days.)

chuck, Tuesday, 7 September 2004 16:51 (twenty years ago)

"Turn Me On" is too coherent to be a Billy Ocean single!

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 16:51 (twenty years ago)

And "La Isla Bonita" is one of Madonna's best hits ever, by the way.

Craziness. I can probably think of at least thirty Madonna singles I like more--the only skippable track on Immaculate Collection (besides "Rescue Me" anyway, but that's the last track so it doesn't count).

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 17:27 (twenty years ago)

I mean, I'm not a dancehall purist or anything--I'm a sucker for the near sickly-sweet rhythms of Beenie Man's "Dude"--but goddamn it, we must draw the line somewhere.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 17:28 (twenty years ago)

I much prefer Kevin Lyttle to "Dude", but "King of the Dancehall" trumps them both.

djdee2005, Tuesday, 7 September 2004 18:16 (twenty years ago)

Ned, are you asking about JoJo or Fefe?

The latter.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 19:08 (twenty years ago)

Oh. Argh.

Imagine, if you will, an synthpop throwback tune complete with neat plinky keyboard and robotic rhythms sung by a constipated mouse with pitch problems. That's what her new single sounds like.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 19:10 (twenty years ago)

So near and yet so far, then.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 19:39 (twenty years ago)

EXACTLY.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 19:40 (twenty years ago)

:-( Most distressing. But at least JC's "ADIDAS" was there for us this year.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 19:45 (twenty years ago)

I was ridin' my bike on 43rd street
Past the station and
There's one person without a seat
Got my sunnies 'cause the sun just
Keeps on lookin' right through me
Ain't nobody gonna stop me
Baby can't you see

[Chorus:]
Don't go
Girls and boys should be together
Don't go
Girls and boys can rule the world
Don't go
Boys and boys should be together
Don't go
Girls and girls can rule the world

I've got jumbo polka-dotted trousers
With the empty pockets
It's funny to me that the two of us
Could fit in one pair
Kings and queens on magazines
That have me on the cover
But none of that compares to
Just one night alone with you
And what you do

Don't go
Girls and boys should be together
Don't go
Girls and boys can rule the world
Don't go
Boys and boys should be together
Don't go
Girls and girls can rule the world [x2]

I was just ridin' my bike on 43rd street
Past the station and there's
One person without a seat
You got me wishin' I was just a little
Squirrel at your window
Got me whistlin' a song
I thought I never could like
Just for you

Don't go
Girls and boys should be together
Don't go
Girls and boys can rule the world
Don't go
Boys and boys should be together
Don't go
Girls and girls can rule the world [x3]

Boys and boys should be together
Don't go
Girls and girls can rule the world

KILL ME NOW (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 20:56 (twenty years ago)

Argh my list is all wrong - I forgot "Was A Time" and "Love Is Here To Stay" and "Rubberband Man" which all totally throw the list out of wack.

I'd note though that Houston isn't a rapper but an R&B singer - and indeed his singing is a big part of why I like the song so much.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 03:50 (twenty years ago)

Damon could sing that lyric easily enough.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 03:55 (twenty years ago)

01 Ghostface f/ Jadakiss – Run (Ghost's headwear in the video puts this one over the top)
02 T.I. – Rubberband Man

04 Twista f/ Kanye West – Slow Jamz
05 Young Gunz – Friday Night
06 Dizzee Rascal – Stand Up Tall
07 Mya f/ Chingy - Fallen (Zone 4 Remix)
08 Kevin Lyttle – Turn Me On (I like the comparison w/ Mark Morrison, I love both songs for the same reason, just one endlessly smooth groove you could just ride out forever)
09 Rachel Stevens - Some Girls
10 M.I.A. - Sunshowers
11 Method Man f/ Busta Rhymes – What’s Happenin’
12 Justin Kohncke f/ Meloboy – Hot Love
13 Gretchen Wilson – Redneck Woman
14 Nina Sky – Move Ya Body
15 The Walkmen – The Rat
16 Los Lonely Boys – Heaven

24 Britney Spears - Toxic
25 Twista - Overnight Celebrity

Josh Love (screamapillar), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 06:34 (twenty years ago)

Dancehall bubblegum was pretty much perfected by Beenie and Mya's 'Girls Dem Sugar'. Those Fefe lyrics are teh crapper, but they'd be so appropriate for 'Hey Ya Pt. 2'.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 08:50 (twenty years ago)

are the 'Turn Me On' and 'La Isla Bonita' comparisons being made because of the bootleg that exists of the two (by BushNo.10 but inspired by a mix I did last year) or incidental of that? heard the bootleg last night at Popjustice thing (also incidentally).

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 11:32 (twenty years ago)

Dunno, but anyone picking 'Turn Me On' is against sanity.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 12:16 (twenty years ago)

Oh, has anyone else noticed that 'Let's Get It Started' is a rip off of the Spice Girls' 'Wannabe?' Listen to the Apl rap backing/ringtone in the video.

The best (worst) part of the Fefe song is the way she sings it. I'm tempted to post a phoenetic version of the lyrics.

A sample: "I've got jumbo pookie-dotted trousers/Wi' eh-empty pockehs"

Was Fergie the 6th Spice Girl? Tranracial Spice must've proved too confusing for the target demographic.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 13:05 (twenty years ago)

are the 'Turn Me On' and 'La Isla Bonita' comparisons being made because of the bootleg that exists of the two (by BushNo.10 but inspired by a mix I did last year) or incidental of that?

Incidental. The bootleg is just that obvious.

ESPECIALLY since they already had Tranracial Spice.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 14:34 (twenty years ago)

Mel B and Geri were biracial, and Posh is just weird, so you can't mean them.

I guess Fergie was cheaper than Geri when it came down to choosing the female Black Eyed Spice.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 14:43 (twenty years ago)

Geri was mixed race?

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 14:48 (twenty years ago)

Ach, me head hurts. I think she was Spanish/English, though eh.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 14:51 (twenty years ago)

Supergrass - 'Kiss Of Life' aka 'Mixed Bizness 2004' is not bad.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 15:03 (twenty years ago)

Mel B was biracial AND often looked like a transvestite: hence, tranracial.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 15:05 (twenty years ago)

Fergie has the edge for attempting to become a whole new race.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 15:17 (twenty years ago)

(Am I the only person who thinks Fergie looks like Genericly-Attractive White Girl?)

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 15:19 (twenty years ago)

i doubt it. i assumed she has Puerto Rican or Cuban roots somewhere tho.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 15:28 (twenty years ago)

Past photos of Fergie show a big haired caucasian blonde with scary eyes and rubbery skin. Present photos of Fergie show a vaguely Cuban girl with occasional blonde hair and a face that looks like melting rubber that someone stuck bad lipstick on top of and resembles the answer to the question "What if Janet was Michael?"

I'm getting somewhat tired of getting to know and like songs and then hearing them lyrically co-opted for the airwaves in a way that makes them not half as enjoyable. Examples include: "Tipsy", "Let's Get Retarded".

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 16:06 (twenty years ago)

Nothing would make me happier than for Dizzee to blow up so big in America that "Stand Up Tall" would replace whatever blander-than-water Maroon 5 song they keep playing twenty times a day on every station. I could never ever get tired of that song.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 16:14 (twenty years ago)

If they put Dizzee on a Lil Jon track, he very easily could blow up. Like on a posse remix or something.

I'm glad Chuch likes that Measles Mumps Rubella song so much! I always forget it, but it's great great great

three weeks pass...
Is "NY Excuse" and "This Is The Excuse" the same song?

billstevejim, Wednesday, 6 October 2004 22:31 (twenty years ago)

Some of my favs this year (in no particular order):

Sondre Lerche: Two-Way Monologue
Annie: Chewing Gum
Keane: Everybody's Changing

Also, Espen Lind wrote an absolutely marvellous song for this year's Norwegian Idol winner. Kartjan himself doesn't contribute much to the single being one of the best of the year, but it still is thanks to a truly great song by Espen Lind called "Standing Tall"

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 7 October 2004 10:16 (twenty years ago)

Turns out my list is very Norway-dominated. Oh well, it has been a great year for Norwegian pop singles ;)

two weeks pass...

if we keep this rolling for a few more weeks we wont have to start the inevitable seperate official one in late november!

piscesboy, Wednesday, 27 October 2004 18:25 (twenty years ago)

No love for the "Lean Back" Remix w/ Lil Jon, Eminem, and Ma$e?
