WHERES ACE OF BASS MAN?

seahorse genius (seahorse genius), Thursday, 9 September 2004 00:16 (twenty years ago)

nominations are closed! sorry! surely you can find ten singles to vote for out of that cavalcade of wtfitude.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 9 September 2004 00:17 (twenty years ago)

Deadline?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 9 September 2004 00:35 (twenty years ago)

Oct. 1st or when no one has voted for two straight days. Whichever comes first.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 9 September 2004 00:37 (twenty years ago)

I'll be bumping this thread up at least once a day with a tally of how many votes I've received as a reminder.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 9 September 2004 00:38 (twenty years ago)

Kudos for doing this BTW. It's a great list.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 9 September 2004 00:38 (twenty years ago)

thanks!

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 9 September 2004 00:39 (twenty years ago)

Do you know the # of songs nominated?

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Thursday, 9 September 2004 01:52 (twenty years ago)

...And can we please do 15 instead of 10?

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Thursday, 9 September 2004 01:54 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, 15 would be good.

billstevejim, Thursday, 9 September 2004 04:29 (twenty years ago)

FINE! FINE! do 15 if you want. but no more than that. If somebody e-mails me more than 15 I'm gonna excise whatever I feel like.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 9 September 2004 05:31 (twenty years ago)

ll cool j, "milky cereal"

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 9 September 2004 05:59 (twenty years ago)

OH GOD NO TECHNOTRONIC

jake b. (cerybut), Thursday, 9 September 2004 08:21 (twenty years ago)

done. btw most of thoes are omgwtf but not lol rofl fwiw.

:| (....), Thursday, 9 September 2004 08:53 (twenty years ago)

Can we write comments on our number 1 choices, just like in the "real" poll?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 9 September 2004 10:19 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I was definitely planning on doing that.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Thursday, 9 September 2004 10:42 (twenty years ago)

i've voted for what i think are the silliest/most bizarre tracks, not what i think are the best or worst - this was the point right?

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Thursday, 9 September 2004 10:44 (twenty years ago)

That's pretty much what I'm gonna do. It's tough because some of the tracks I think are legitimately quite good, but still have a major OMGWTFLOL factor (Primitive Radio Gods, LaTour, Positive K).

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Thursday, 9 September 2004 12:46 (twenty years ago)

Cake - The Distance
Trio - Da Da Da
Wu-Tang Clan - Method Man
Prodigy - Firestarter
Whale - Hobo Humpin Slobo Babe
Haddaway - What is Love
Master P - Make 'em Say Ugggggh
MC 900 Ft. Jesus - If I Only Had A Brain
Wreckx'n'Effect - Rump Shaker
Chumbawumba - Tubthumping

TOMBOT, Thursday, 9 September 2004 13:16 (twenty years ago)

Hahahaha. What I love about this poll :
1) everybody has a different concept of what was "supposed" to be nominated
2) everybody has a different concept of what they should be voting for
3) nobody knows the points system
4) the poll can close at any time

This is really fun stuff. We so needed an anti-poll poll like this.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 9 September 2004 14:15 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I find some of these picks pretty OMGWTFLOL themselves. "Smells Like Teen Spirit"? "Randy Described Eternity"? "Earth People"?

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Thursday, 9 September 2004 14:33 (twenty years ago)

There's some obvious early leads but it's still anybody's game!

Gimme comments if you want!

VOTE!

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 9 September 2004 16:46 (twenty years ago)

also if you don't feel like e-mailing then post your 10-15 choices on this thread or the one on ILE.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 9 September 2004 16:47 (twenty years ago)

Does Roxette actually have a song called "Hello" or is that supposed to be "Joyride" (as in, "Hello, you fool, I love you, c'mon join the joyride.")

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 9 September 2004 17:09 (twenty years ago)

Babylon Zoo - Spaceman
Cake - The Distance
The Connells- '74-'75
Crash Test Dummies - Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm
Haddaway - What is Love
Robert Miles - Children
Mo-do - Ein Zwei Polizei
Nada Surf - Popular
Scatman John - Scatman
Skee-lo - I Wish

I mist Luniz with I got 5 on it. (Or something)

Ludo (Ludo), Thursday, 9 September 2004 19:06 (twenty years ago)

I'm totally torn between the songs I really really like (of which there are many) and the ones that induce the most gutteral OMG!WTF!LOL!ROFFLE! reactions. I guess my final list will have to be a mixture of both.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 9 September 2004 20:02 (twenty years ago)

I'm not sure what to vote for either. I nominated Scott Weiland's "Barbarella" which is a song I very much like, and now that I think about it, it wasn't really a hit either.

herbert hebert (herbert hebert), Thursday, 9 September 2004 20:16 (twenty years ago)

it was a hit in the sense that if anybody knows any song off that album they know "Barbarella." Don't think about this too much people, it kind of defeats the point.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 9 September 2004 21:34 (twenty years ago)

the omgwtflol that can be spoken of is not the true omgwtflol

jake b. (cerybut), Thursday, 9 September 2004 21:50 (twenty years ago)

not everyoen understands lolrofl. its a spiritual thing.

:| (....), Thursday, 9 September 2004 21:57 (twenty years ago)

My votes go to ...

Primus - Wynona's Big Brown Beaver
RuPaul - Supermodel (You Better Work)
Scatman John - Scatman
Snap! - The Power
Snow - Informer
Stereo Total - Joe Le Taxi

derrick (derrick), Thursday, 9 September 2004 23:20 (twenty years ago)

was 'radio freak in a storm' a hit in the uk?

keith m (keithmcl), Friday, 10 September 2004 01:17 (twenty years ago)

don't take the song "hit" too seriously. Hit/single/push track/fave whatever.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 10 September 2004 01:21 (twenty years ago)

the word hit.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 10 September 2004 01:21 (twenty years ago)

btw it is FUN tallying these things. there seems to be a breakway front-runner but it's still up in the air.

Send more votes now! Vote vote vote!

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 10 September 2004 01:28 (twenty years ago)

How many people have voted so far?

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Friday, 10 September 2004 01:29 (twenty years ago)

around 20. as I said it's anybody's game at this point

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 10 September 2004 01:30 (twenty years ago)

i think people should email their votes. adds to the suspense.

artdamages (artdamages), Friday, 10 September 2004 01:31 (twenty years ago)

omgwtf. this is hard. I have to narrow down my choices. lol. if someone made a cd-r of this it would be the best ever. roffle.

artdamages (artdamages), Friday, 10 September 2004 01:39 (twenty years ago)

I concur (re: e-mailing rather than posting), but if they'd prefer to post 'em here or on the ILE thread I'll still count them.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 10 September 2004 01:39 (twenty years ago)

"Earth People"?

Every Doc Oct song is omgwtflolrotf.

billstevejim, Friday, 10 September 2004 01:47 (twenty years ago)

Robbie Williams - "Millenium"

and whoever does that song that goes "Boom boom boom, lemme hear ya say 'way-o,' 'WAY-O!!!'"

Curt W, Friday, 10 September 2004 05:20 (twenty years ago)

that's Tom Waits

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 10 September 2004 07:41 (twenty years ago)

I only just realized that Robbie's "Millennium" stole its hook from You Only Live Twice.

derrick (derrick), Friday, 10 September 2004 07:44 (twenty years ago)

Until we are allowed to see pictures of ALL of you dressed in drag and singing, RuPaul should be taken off this list.

If you can pull it off (which most of you people won't be able to do, guaranteed) RuPaul shouldn't be on there.

Besides, how can you slag someone who has enough balls to pull THAT off?

Alan Perry, Friday, 10 September 2004 12:55 (twenty years ago)

I don't think anyone is slagging anyone here.

Personally my top 15 is full of songs I absolutely adore for one reason or another.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 10 September 2004 20:38 (twenty years ago)

I just did another bunch of tallying and one song has done a serious breakaway with the brass ring. Nonetheless, it wouldn't take many votes for some of the others to close the gap.

VOTE!

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 10 September 2004 21:05 (twenty years ago)

What points system are you using? Would I go OMGWTFLOL!ROFFLE!?! if you told me? Tell me anyway.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Friday, 10 September 2004 22:15 (twenty years ago)

Can I be a pain and point out that "Our Radio Rocks" and "Let's Get Ready To Rumble" by PJ & Duncan are two different songs? Lumping them in together obviously frees up another vote for something else (yes, PJ & Duncan are in my top 10), but it doesn't seem right somehow.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 10 September 2004 22:19 (twenty years ago)

As of now I'm just tallying the votes. 1 vote=1 vote. Placement on list means jack crap. I'm not revealing more about how I'm going to determine ties until we have a better sense of how many ties there's going to be.

I have no idea who PJ & Duncan are. If they're two different songs than I guess people should vote for one or the other. At the risk of saying too much I'll note that it hasn't been an issue.

6. Trio - Da Da Da
7. Color Me Badd – I Wanna Sex You Up
8. King Missile - Detachable Penis
9. Stereo Total - Joe Le Taxi
10. Shamen - Ebeneezer Goode

My criteria went to either strange/funny things that I truly like, or something that totally permeated the world around me when released, but was completely and stupendously preposterous - thereby earning big 'WTF? Has the world gone insane?' marks.

I left out certain things that I love (Flaming Lips, Pram etc)because to me they have no relevance to OMGWTFetcness. Other things were missed that I would have liked to have voted for by the title alone but have never heard.

Am I taking this too seriously?

emil.y (emil.y), Sunday, 26 September 2004 14:25 (twenty years ago)

my criteria: taking out all the cassettes i made while listening to WHTG and picking the tracks that i played over and over when i would put on my headphones and try to be all introspective and mopey as a teenager.

sadly, no paul weller or pavement is on the nomination list...

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Sunday, 26 September 2004 16:14 (twenty years ago)

Am I taking this too seriously?

No, other people aren't taking it seriously enough.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Sunday, 26 September 2004 16:56 (twenty years ago)

Do we need to make comments about our choices??

I hope Aerosmaith win, I love that song.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 26 September 2004 17:01 (twenty years ago)

How many votes have you gotten for this?

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Sunday, 26 September 2004 17:02 (twenty years ago)

I'm not sure exactly, haven't counted lately but probably around 50. I'm totally cool with getting more.

Feel free to make comments, but you don't have to. I haven't decided what I'm gonna do entirely as far as that goes.

I'd just like to share my love with everybody who nominated stuff and has voted so far. To the rest of ya, VOTE! VOTE! VOTE! There's some people who were heavy on nominating but haven't voted yet! Get yer ass in gear!

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 26 September 2004 17:04 (twenty years ago)

do we get a CDR of this if our nomination makes it into the top ten?

jake b. (cerybut), Sunday, 26 September 2004 17:50 (twenty years ago)

that would be awesome but I don't have access to enough of these to do it myself.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 26 September 2004 18:18 (twenty years ago)

I sincerely hope other people are writing blurbs for this as well so the 10-15 or so I'm writing won't make me look quite so pathetic.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Monday, 27 September 2004 19:29 (twenty years ago)

Okay Okay - my ass is gettin'

Vertical Horizon - Everything You Want

A licky Boom Boom Down.

david day (winslow), Monday, 27 September 2004 21:34 (twenty years ago)

Bump.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 19:09 (twenty years ago)

Please everyone vote for "Poing".

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 19:13 (twenty years ago)

What's up man! Hey yo what's up!
Yeah what's goin' on here.
Sick an' tired of five-oh runnin' up on the block here.
You know what I'm sayin'?
Yo Snow, they came around here lookin' for you the other day. Word? Word! Bust it!

[chorus] Informer, you no say Daddy me Snow me I'll go blame,
A licky Boom Boom Down.
Detective mon said Daddy me Snow me stab someone down the lane,
A licky Boom Boom Down.
Informer, you no say Daddy me Snow me I'll go blame,
A licky Boom Boom Down.
Detective mon said Daddy me Snow me stab someone down the lane,
A licky Boom Boom Down.

Police them come an' now they blow down me door,
One him come crawl through, through my window,
So then they put me in the back the car at the station,
From that point on me reach my destination,
When the destination reached, it was the east detention, where them
Whipped down me pants, looked up me bottom

jake b. (cerybut), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 19:23 (twenty years ago)

Damn. You people are making me want to unvote Snow in favour of Color Me Badd.

Kim (Kim), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:41 (twenty years ago)

making love until we drown vs. a licky boom boom down

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:55 (twenty years ago)

vs. Whipped down me pants, looked up me bottom

lkfd, Tuesday, 28 September 2004 21:49 (twenty years ago)

that line blew my mind in middle school. Thanks to Wayne's World I had just learned about the hilarity that is the Body Cavity Search.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 21:57 (twenty years ago)

Color Me Badd might be the only one I would have voted for on both OMGWTFLOL(ROFFLE) and the real thing.

Except for Primitive Radio Gods, anyway.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 23:38 (twenty years ago)

For me it's "Steal My Sunshine". And maybe "What is Love".

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 23:40 (twenty years ago)

Actually, Anthony--I hate do to this to the guys 'coz god knows they're not gonna get much love elsewhere, but can I unvote Dada in favor of Color Me Badd?

"Cotton Eyed Joe" is still the big omission from this list.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 23:42 (twenty years ago)

I very well might've voted Len for the real thing but my love of that song isn't very OMGWTFLOL(ROFFLE)based.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 23:44 (twenty years ago)

I was debating letting Kim change her vote but I decided not to. I don't want to deal with a whole lot of confusion and second guessing so it's better to just say all votes are final.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 00:04 (twenty years ago)

yeah, OK, that's fair. I'm probably gonna write up CMB anyways.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 00:09 (twenty years ago)

I was 99% joking anyway. But still I got the iron fist! I am defeated!

(I just couldn't muster up enough real affection for "sex you up" to vote for it sincerely)

Kim (Kim), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 10:34 (twenty years ago)

the cmb guy offers to light a candle and do it till you both wake up (?!!!??!) and yet you can't must any affection?? you a cold fish.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 1 October 2004 12:54 (twenty years ago)

und voting est fin

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 2 October 2004 16:45 (twenty years ago)

Informer, you no say Daddy me Snow me I'll go blame,
A licky Boom Boom Down.
Detective mon said Daddy me Snow me stab someone down the lane

It's actually "Boom Boom Dem".

Literal translation:

The Informer is the guy who said, me, Snow, is to blame, and
I'm gonna shoot him.
The Informer is the guy who said, me, Snow, stabbed someone down the lane, and
I'm gonna shoot him.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Saturday, 2 October 2004 16:59 (twenty years ago)

how's the tallying going?
im looking forward to these results WAY more than the standard 90s poll.

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Monday, 4 October 2004 17:00 (twenty years ago)

Tallying is just super (I'd been doing it all along so it's almost done anyhow). I'm going to Philly for a week so the results will be revealed starting next Monday. Due to the number of nominees and number of voters it's going to be a Top 40 rather than a Top 100. I'll be your Kasey Kasem. People have already sent comments but personally I'd rather just reveal the track with some info and let you all chatter about it without advance warning.

Here's a question: how many tracks should I reveal a day? One a day for 40 days? 2 a day for 20? 4 for 10? 8 for 5? I want to give people a chance to react to the songs but I don't want to draw this out too excruciatingly.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 4 October 2004 17:09 (twenty years ago)

8 for 5.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 4 October 2004 17:11 (twenty years ago)

that should be pretty easy to pull off. Plus it will reward people who check ILX on Friday evening 5-9 EST (when I'll be at work and surfing the net myself).

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 4 October 2004 17:12 (twenty years ago)

Can you do #100-#41 all at once or twice, maybe without pictures or write-ups or anything?

I still want to do that top 100 CD-R thing.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Monday, 4 October 2004 17:48 (twenty years ago)

Awesome! I'll reveal #41-100 after the Top 40, so that it doesn't reduce the surprise.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 4 October 2004 18:02 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...
Where are the winners?

braveclub, Friday, 4 May 2007 12:35 (eighteen years ago)
