Ladies and Gentlemen...The 40 Most OMGWTFLOL(ROFFLE) Songs Of The 90s.

I will be your host for the next five days as we reveal the 40 songs from the years 1990-1999 that make the average Ilxor say "oh my god, what the fuck," then laugh out loud, then roll on the floor. Laughing.

Always laughing.

Since many of the songs received the same number of votes, placement was decided using their U.S. Billboard chart peaks. The more successful a song is an America, the more hilarious it is. If you don't like it, you can lump it. Numbers #41-100 will be revealed after we celebrate the winners.

And now...the winners.

#40.

Artist: SHAMPOO
Song: TROUBLE
No. of votes: 6
Billboard Chart Peak: The song did not make the Billboard charts in America, according to the All-Music Guide (all of my rankings are courtesy of that site).

Shampoo is a duo of punk rock Barbie dolls barely out of their teens, hailing from Plumstead, England. Jacqui Blake and Carrie Askew both
handle vocals in a highly energetic and barely intelligible fashion,
and both have enough attitude and downright sass to make critics on
both sides of the Atlantic go ga-ga over their primitive punk and sly
innuendoes. Even though their talent is barely discernible, Shampoo is
a knowing and clever joke and loads of fun. We Are Shampoo, their
full-length debut, features all of the jaw-dropping singles released
in Britain, including their anthem, "Trouble," which was featured in
the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers soundtrack. Heather Phares,
All-Music Guide

Shampoo congealed when Jacqui, now 19, and Carrie, now 17, founded a Manic Street Preachers fanclub together. They put out a single, "Trouble," that sold in excess of 150,000 copies and led to a full-length album. The album is unabashed trash-pop, collecting punky guitars, synths, sing-along choruses, and peroxide-blonde hair. Transvision Vamp offers a hint as to what Shampoo sounds like; kooky early 80s singles from Cyndi Lauper or Toni Basil might help as well. The infectious melodies and teeny lyrics make questions about musical worth totally irrelevent. It's too fun and catchy for such questions to occur to you. Singing with undisguised cockney accents, Shampoo immediately cajoles you into singing with them on "Trouble": "Uh-oh, we're in trouble. Something's come along and burst our bubble." The verses consist of ranted accounts of how the girls missed the last subway and ended up staying out all night. Tim Mohr, Consumable Online

"Trouble" deserves inclusion for being in both Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers: The Movie and the Jennifer Love Hewitt classic The Trojan War.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Monday, 11 October 2004 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm, somehow I though this would be higher...

My prediction for the winner: "Informer". Many of the nominees were USA or Europe specific, but Snow surely will bridge the cap.

Artist: MASTER P
Song: MAKE 'EM SAY UHH!!!
No. of votes: 6
Billboard Chart Peak: Rap #6, Billboard Hot 100 #16, rhythmic top 40 #32, r&b/hiphop #25, hot dance #23

http://www.shima.iplus.to/img/mx/mx019108.jpg

Master P created a hip-hop empire without registering on any
mainstream radar. For several years, he operated solely in the rap
underground, eventually surfacing in the mid-'90s as a recording
artist and producer who knew exactly what his audience wanted. And
what they wanted was gangsta rap. With his independent label No Limit,
Master P gave them gangsta rap at its most basic — violent, vulgar
lyrics, hard-edged beats, whiny synthesizers, and blunted bass. He
wasn't a great rapper, nor was anyone on No Limit; occasionally, the
No Limit rappers were even talentless and clumsy. But in a time when
major labels were running away from the controversy that gangsta rap
caused and Dr. Dre, the father of the genre, was proclaiming it dead,
Master P stayed on course, delivering album after album of
unadulterated gangsta. It was recorded cheaply and packaged cheaply,
and almost all of the records on No Limit were interchangeable, but
that didn't matter, because Master P kept making money and getting
paid. Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All-Music Guide

i can't beleive u said what u said that was wrong master p is off the hook and so is songs u don't know how to listen to him.he is the best rapper besides 2 pac and will always be and the no limit click can to sing and from the way i see it even if he didn't have his own records company he would still blow up how do u think he has the money to do what he does because he is BOUT IT BOUT IT & ROUT IT ROUT IT so don't be jealous if i think i am write write back on here and address it to BIRDIE and give me your appinion on what i said A Music Fan, Spotlight Amazon Review

Shampoo's complete Top 40 record in the UK, courtesy of Everyhit:

11 Shampoo Trouble Jul 1994
27 Shampoo Viva La Megababes Oct 1994
21 Shampoo Delicious Feb 1995
36 Shampoo Trouble (re-issue) Aug 1995
25 Shampoo Girl Power Jul 1996

No albums hit the top 40, but they were legendarily 'big in Japan', so that probably doesn't matter too much.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

"Trouble" never went top 10! Gah.

It should've been Viva Las Megababes, that's the only flaw to that song.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Jacqui from Shampoo was hot.
My prediction for the winner is "What is Love?" ... it was getting a lot of votes from the people who posted their ballots on the threads. Although the only reason I noticed that particular song was because I nominated it.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Master P, amazingly, has never troubled the UK charts, and neither has Li'l Romeo... can anyone think of anything he might have been on?

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Anthony, could you please include the release years of the singles, my mind gets kinda foggy.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

The Master P inclusion is perfect because "Make em say uhhggh" is the only master P song one really needs to hear, and it was really all the rap world wanted from him. When I replay what I recall about the video in my head (No Limit stars playing basketball, Shaq in audience cameo), am I wrong for thinking the slma dunking man in a gorilla suit mascot for the N.B.A's Pheonix Suns was somehow involved in the proceedings?

herbert hebert (herbert hebert), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

If I'd've fuckin' known the name of "Trouble," which has haunted the recesses of my mind for years and years, I would have put it at the top of my list.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

The "Make 'em Say Ugggh" music video was just as ugly, bloated and hysterical as the song itself. The aforementioned dunking man in a gorilla suit is possibly the highlight, but the No Limit Cheeleaders and the No Limit tank (which annihilates one of the backboards at the end of the vid, I believe) are great too.

I love how little respect AMG gives Master P. It's so rare that they actually step out and say "this shit sucks"--usually it's just feigned indifference.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

i think my dad worked on that video

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

#38.
Artist: EMINEM
Song: MY NAME IS
No. of votes: 6
Billboard Chart Peak: R&b/hip-hop #18, Rap #10, Modern Rock #37, Rhythmic Top 40 #5, Billboard Hot 100 #36

http://www.constanking.narod.ru/constan/images/musicvid/screens/Eminem-My_Name_Is2.jpg

A protégé of Dr. Dre, rapper Eminem emerged in 1999 as one of the most
controversial rappers to ever grace the genre. Using his biting wit
and incredible skills to vent on everything from his unhappy childhood
to his contempt for the mainstream media, his success became the
biggest crossover success the genre had seen since Dre's solo debut
seven years earlier. The controversy over his lyrics was the best
publicity any musician could afford, and being the first Caucasian
rapper to make a significant impact in years may have given him a
platform not afforded to equally talented African-American rappers. A
gifted producer as well, his talents always seemed overshadowed by his
media presence, which was a mix between misunderstood genius and
misogynistic homophobe. Both may be true, but his message spoke to
legions of disaffected youth who had few role models in the rap world
who could relate to the white lower-class experience. Jason Ankeny
and Bradley Torreano, All-Music Guide

Eminem is a joker. No, we didn't say he is a joke. We said he's a joker because anyone who has ever listened to Eminem has to wonder if he isn't winking at us all, with some of the most profane and violent lyrics since N.W.A. When he goes off about killing his wife, homosexuals or anyone who stands in his way for that matter (watch out Everlast), you know that it may have actually crossed his mind after listening to his album. People were going to give him respect, and no one would dismiss him as a white gangsta rapper wannabe. (Can you hear "Ice, Ice Baby" playing softly in the background?)

Like him or not (and for the record, we like him), Eminem has brought the music scene a much needed injection of raw energy and talent. Though his lyrics would have put him in an asylum in any century but the last two, even the most passive of rap fans has to admit to his incredible talent. Yes, talent. As a lyricist, he is almost in a league of his own. Though at times he seems to be a faux Beastie Boys, no rapper has sounded better via anger than he does (and apparently he's angry about a lot of things).

He has been boycotted, censored and criticized for his image (and the fact that even the holiest of children in the Bible Belt seem to own his records). But Eminem is nothing but the perfect example of a performer living out his public persona. Though he undoubtedly had a tough childhood growing up in Detroit, how dangerous is he really now as a millionaire artist? As for the controversy that surrounds him, well let's just say that his record exec backers are trying to douse the flames. Lyrics aside, enjoy Eminem for what he is, the most talented rapper since Snoop Dogg. AskMen.com

I don't really understand the OMGWTFLOL(ROFFLE) love for that one. Perhaps if Eminem had never had another hit and instantly faded from public consciousnes, but that certainly wasn't the case.

(also, is anyone else surprised that that song only charted at #36? It was easily one of the biggest hits of the year, if I remember)

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Monday, 11 October 2004 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

MTV loved it a lot more than radio, I figure.

That first Eminem pic didn't work for me (is it working for other people?) here's another, to be fair.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Monday, 11 October 2004 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Perhaps if Eminem had never had another hit and instantly faded from public consciousnes
At the time, I remember thinking that he might be a one-hit fad. The jokey nature of the song and the video had a twinge of novelty to it. Plus the whole "hey look, it's Dre's white protege" seemed gimmicky.

These are all purely "on the surface" observations. Obviously one would have a different picture from reading the Eminem features at the time, or by hearing the album.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 11 October 2004 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, if it wasn't for all the controversy and press Eminem got, it's entirely possible that no one would have cared by the time of "The Real Slim Shady". His other singles off the first album--"Guilty Coscience," "Role Model," maybe one other I can't remember--weren't exactly big hits.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Monday, 11 October 2004 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Master P, amazingly, has never troubled the UK charts, and neither has Li'l Romeo... can anyone think of anything he might have been on?

i think the only time Master P has entered the UKs consciousness was when he was on Louis Therouxs 'Rappers' episode.

zappi (joni), Monday, 11 October 2004 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

they were in most other countries tho (all his singles top 20 in the UK for example), and isn't getting to #36 on the Billboard chart the equivalent of reaching the lower end of the top 20 (or even 10) in the UK to some extent?

37.
Artist: R.E.M.
Song: SHINY HAPPY PEOPLE (1991)
No. of votes: 6
Billboard Chart Peak: Charts: modern rock #3, mainstream rock #8, hot 100 #10

http://www.captaincraig.com/REM.jpg

R.E.M. mark the point when post-punk turned into alternative rock.
When their first single, "Radio Free Europe," was released in 1981 it
sparked a back-to-the-garage movement in the American underground.
While there were a number of hardcore and punk bands in the US during
the early '80s, R.E.M. brought guitar-pop back into the underground
lexicon. Combining ringing guitar hooks with mumbled, cryptic lyrics
and a D.I.Y. aesthetic borrowed from post-punk, the band
simultaneously sounded traditional and modern. Though there were no
overt innovations in their music. R.E.M. had an identity and sense of
purpose that transformed the American underground. Throughout the
'80s, they worked relentlessly, releasing records every year and
touring constantly, playing both theaters and backwoods dives. Along
the way, they inspired countless bands, from the legions of jangle-pop
groups in the mid-'80s to scores of alternative-pop groups in the
'90s, who admired their slow climb to stardom. It did take R.E.M.
several years to break into the top of the charts, but they had a cult
following from the release of their debut EP, Chronic Town, in 1982.
Chronic Town established the haunting folk and garage rock that became
the band's signature sound, and over the next five years, they
continued to expand their music with a series of critically-acclaimed
albums. By the late '80s, the group's fanbase had grown large enough
to guarantee strong sales, but the Top 10 success in 1987 of Document
and "The One I Love" was unexpected, especially since R.E.M. had only
altered its sound slightly. Following Document, R.E.M. slowly became
one of the world's most popular bands. After an exhaustive
international tour supporting 1988's Green, the band retired from
touring for six years and retreated into the studio to produce their
most popular records, Out of Time (1991) and Automatic for the People
(1992). By the time they returned to performing with the Monster tour
in 1995, the band had been acknowledged by critics and musicians as
one of the forefathers of the thriving alternative rock movement, and
they were rewarded with the most lucrative tour of their career.
Toward the late '90s, R.E.M. was an institution, as its influence was
felt in new generations of bands. Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All-Music Guide

"You can't be afraid to be vulnerable. Ultimately, 'Shiny Happy People' was probably an abortion of an idea. But it was genuine at the time, and that's that. No regrets, no compromises, no apologies." Michael Stipe, The Mephis Flyer

Artist: AEROSMITH
Song: I DON'T WANNA MISS A THING (1998)
No. Of Votes: 6
Billboard Chart Peaks: Adult top 40 #2, LATIN TROPCIAL/SALSA AIRPLAY #5, mainstream rock #4, RHYTHMIC TOP 40 #25, Hot 100 #1
(I assume there's a fuck-up on Allmusic, but it's an OMGTWTFup so yay)

http://rhein-zeitung.de/on/98/09/11/magazin/news/aerosmith.jpg

Aerosmith was one of the most popular hard rock bands of the '70s,
setting the style and sound of hard rock and heavy metal for the next
two decades with their raunchy, bluesy swagger. The Boston-based
quintet found the middle ground between the menace of the Rolling
Stones and the campy, sleazy flamboyance of the New York Dolls,
developing a lean, dirty riff-oriented boogie that was loose and
swinging and as hard as a diamond.
In the meantime, they developed a prototype for power ballads with
"Dream On," a piano ballad that was orchestrated with strings and
distorted guitars. Aerosmith's ability to pull off both ballads and
rock & roll made them extremely popular during the mid-'70s, when they
had a string of gold and platinum albums. By the early '80s, the
group's audience had declined as the band fell prey to drug and
alcohol abuse. However, their career was far from over — in the late
'80s, Aerosmith pulled off one of the most remarkable comebacks in
rock history, returning to the top of the charts with a group of
albums that equalled, if not surpassed, the popularity of their '70s
albums. Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All-Music Guide

"Finally, there is the "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing" section, which features the song that was so important to the success of the movie. The video is included here, along with a very brief Aerosmith interview, and a promo ad for the soundtrack. My only complaint here is that the interview and the video are not encoded on separate chapters, so that every time you want to watch the video, you have to sit through the interview. Not a major problem, but still mildly annoying. DVDlaunch, Armageddon: The Criterion Collection review

We Are Shampoo, their full-length debut, features all of the jaw-dropping singles released in Britain

bollocks it does! "YAW DEAD! YAW DEAD! BOUFFANT HEADBUTT! YAW FACKIN DEAD!!!"

also Blisters & Bruises with the rather OMGWTF b-side I Love Little Pussy. That Carter cover of Trouble is indeed typically ace.

34.
Artist: WRECKX-N-EFFECT
Song: RUMP SHAKER (1992)
No. of Votes: 6
Billboard Chart Peaks: hot 100 #2, rap #1, dance #1, r&b/hip-hop #1

http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drc500/c543/c543688xm46.jpg

Wreckx-N-Effect earned a huge crossover smash with the single "Rump
Shaker" off their 1992 album Hard or Smooth. The accompanying video
with its array of shapely women following the directions of the lead
singer generated nearly as much heat as Sir Mix-A-Lot's "Baby Got
Back." It also helped the group secure a platinum certification,
something it hardly seemed they'd earn from their Motown debut
Wrecks-N-Effect in 1991. Markell Riley, brother of super-producer
Teddy Riley, was part of the rap ensemble along with Aquil Davidson
and Brandon Mitchell; Mitchell was killed in a 1990 shooting.

Although they formed back in 1987 (originally as the Southern Whale
Cult), the Swedish outfit Whale didn't hit the big time until 1995,
with the MTV-hit "Hobo Humpin' Slobo Babe" (directed by Mark
Pellington). Consisting of members Cia Soro (vocals), Henrik Schyffert
(guitar), and Gordon Cyrus (bass), the band released several albums
back home (such as The 52nd State of America, In Style!, Whatever,
etc.) before signing a worldwide record deal in the mid-'90s. Their
next album, We Care, failed to yield another hit like "Slobo Babe,"
and after opening for Blur on a North American tour, Cyrus left the
band to form his own hip-hop record company. After a lengthy hiatus,
new members Jorgen Wall (drums), Jon Jefferson Klingberg (second
guitar), and Heikki Kiviaho (bass) joined in time to record their
follow-up, 1998's All Disco Dance Must End in Broken Bones. Recorded
in Chicago and London, the album was produced and engineered by two of
today's top alternative producers — Chris Potter (the Verve) and Brad
Wood (Veruca Salt, Placebo). An extensive U.S. tour with Tricky
followed soon after the album's release. Greg Prato, All-Music Guide

"Whale hails from Sweden (homeland of ABBA and Ace of Base) and one of their missions is to make it up to the world for Sweden being the origin of Ace of Base. I won this CD single back in ‘95 from a college radio station (KRUX in Las Cruces, NM) and it’s always had an interesting place in my CD collection. My wife keeps trying to get me to take this to a used CD store and I keep listening to it and wanting to keep it." Mike Hodge, Mucho Maas

UK-wise, Aerosmith have had 13 top 40 hits, of which I Don't Want To Miss A Thing was the only one to go top ten, peaking at #4 in September 1998, and refusing to go away for a very, very long time afterwards.

Wreckx-N-Effect's chart history:

29 Wrecks-N-Effect Juicy Single Jan 1990
24 Wreckx-N-Effect Rump Shaker Single Dec 1992
26 Wreckx-N-Effect featuring Apache Indian Wreckx Shop Single May 1994
40 Wreckx-N-Effect Rump Shaker (re-issue) Single Aug 1994

And Hobo Humpin' Slobo Babe would provide Whale with their only ever top 40 hit, a reissue getting to #15 in November 1995.

"Rap music to me is just living in the moment. It's reactionary. Most of the lyrics are created while you are working in the studio. Rappers don't come in with written words to say, they just listen and respond to the vibe they feel from the music. So the lyrics may reflect what I experienced that day or two years ago. It could be about love, lost, anger, desire, fear . . . just LIFE." Shaquille, O'Neal, Hip Online

If you're going to focus on the wtf-ness of "Rumpshaker," I'd interpret the lyrics as "zooma zooma zoom zoom in da boom-boom". That's way more WTF.

If "Doop" made it then it's going to make me so sad when "Poing" doesn't. I can only assume that the reason more people didn't vote for that one is because they hadn't heard it. HOW COULD THEY HEAR AND STILL NOT BELIEVE??

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Amazingly enough, Shaq had a hit in the UK. It wasn't the tune mentioned here, but rather 'You Can't Stop The Reign' - #40, February 1997.

Billboard chart peaks: Adult 40 #31, Mainstream Rock #33, Modern Rock #3, Top 40 #32

http://www.geocities.com/sunsetstrip/Birdland/5333/dan2.jpg

The alternative pop quartet Harvey Danger was formed in Seattle in
1994 by University of Washington students Sean Nelson (vocals), Jeff
Lin (guitar), Aaron Huffman (bass), and Evan Sult (drums). Initially
setting out merely to play cover versions of their favorite songs at
area parties, in time the group developed a rabid cult following, and
in 1996 they teamed with renowned local producer John Goodmanson to
record the tracks which were ultimately shaped into their 1997 debut
LP Where Have All the Merrymakers Gone? Originally issued on the indie
label Arena Rock, the album was soon picked up by Slash Records after
the infectious single "Flagpole Sitta" became a local hit; released
nationally, the track became a national smash during the summer of
1998. Two years later, the follow-up King James Version arrived. Jason
Ankeny, All-Music Guide

"Flagpole Sitta" comes from an offbeat/nonmainstream kind of mind.
'They cut of my legs now I'm an amputee, God damn you.' and 'I'm not
sick but I'm not well'. Very pop-rock. They appeal to the
alternative style of thinking, which is what makes this band sell.
Let's face it, alternative people like to think they are different.
The lyrics to this band are different. Their style is a little
different. Fans of alternative rock should pick it up. Or if you like
a pop sound, check it out too. Bill Aicher, Music-critic.com

No. of votes: 7
Billboard chart peaks: Hot 100 #14, Rap #1, R&B #10, Dance #14

http://www.musicmatic.de/P/Positiv1.jpg

Positive K scored a major rap hit with 1992's "I Got a Man." Leading
up to that, the Bronx-born rapper cut a few underground compilation
appearances, including one — "I'm Not Havin' It," a duet with MC Lyte
— that upped his profile significantly. A guest spot on Grand Puba's
debut album, along with a self-released, Big Daddy Kane-produced
single ("Nightshift"), set the stage for The Skills Dat Pay da Bills.
His debut full-length, released on Island subsidiary 4th & Broadway,
balanced Nation of Islam themes with gangsta-isms and more pop-based
moments. Meanwhile, he kept his Creative Control label in operation,
signing and cultivating new talent. Andy Kellman, All-Music Guide

Pos blew up back in '92 when 'I Got A Man' almost became a national anthem, but 'Skills Dat Pay Da Bills' really proved that there was more to this Brooklynite than just cheezy chat-up lines. Although this was Pos' debut LP, he'd already made sparks with cuts like 'A Good Combination', 'Step Up Front', 'Start It Up' (w/MC Lyte & Milk D) and a nice little cameo on the first Brand Nubian LP ('Positive and LG'). 'Skills...' was Pos' first time to shine on the solo-tip and he did so from the opening intro ('Pos K Theme') to the aptly titled 'It's All Over'. In between these bookcases, Pos addresses themes like girls who only date guys with nice rides ('Carhoppers'), fake amigos ('Friends'), pimpin' ('Nightshift' f/Big Daddy Kane) and project hoes ('Minnie the Moocher' f/Grand Daddy IU). Mark Morrison was one of the most successful British urban R&B singers
of the mid-'90s. His breakthrough single, "Return of the Mack," became
a Top Ten hit across Europe in 1996, and opened the U.S. market for
him the following year. Although he became a commercial success nearly
overnight, his career was plagued by run-ins with the law that
prevented him from consolidating his position as a star. Stephen
Thomas Erlewine, All-Music Guide

I have a music snob friend who absolutely loves him and unironically considers his song one of the crowning moments of 90s pop. We always tease her about her Mark Morrison love and make fun of his attempts at being the world's foremost British thug crooner. Sorry Mark, just not buying it. Even better than his mack act, was the fact that he was put in jail just as he was getting popular in the US. Which you'd think would only increase his tough guy street cred. Except he got arrested for carrying a stun gun onto a plane. Sorry love, but if you wanna be considered a r&b/rap bad boy in these parts you have to get shot 9 times in the face. One of the most popular party rap/bass music duos of the early '90s,
Atlanta's Tag Team — aka Steve RollN and DC the Brain Supreme — scored
a massive hit with their 1993 single "Whoomp! There It Is," which sold
over four million copies, making it one of the best-selling singles of
all time. The song's booming bass and seemingly endless chant of
"Whoomp! There It Is" made it instantly memorable and instantly
popular; the group also turned out slight variations on the song,
"Addams Family (Whoomp)" and "Bulls There It Is," that year, along
with a full-length album named after their first success. But singles
were Tag Team's forte, and over the next two years the duo released
plenty of them, including "Here It Is, Bam!" "Whoomp! There It Went,"
"U Go Girl," "Pig Power," and "Funkey Situation," which was the title
cut from their 1995 album. None of their efforts matched the success
of "Whoomp! There It Is," however, though the single was immortalized
on countless party rap and jock jams compilations; the group released
a best-of album in early 2000. Heather Phares, All-Music Guide

Billboard chart peak: Modern Rock #21

http://www.geocities.com/chevrolet692000/daisies.jpg

Ween was the ultimate cosmic goof of the alternative rock era, a
prodigiously talented and deliriously odd duo whose work traveled far
beyond the constraints of parody and novelty into the heart of
surrealist ecstasy. Despite a mastery for seemingly every mutation of
the musical spectrum, the group refused to play it straight; in
essence, Ween were bratty deconstructionists, kicking dirt on the pop
world around them with demented glee. Along with the occasional
frat-boy lapses into misogyny, racism, and homophobia, the band's
razor-sharp satire cut to the inherently silly heart of rock & roll
with hilariously acute savagery; fueled by psilocybin mushrooms and an
all-consuming craving for hot meals, Ween created its own
self-contained universe, a parallel dimension where the only sacred
cow was their own demon god, the Boognish. Jason Ankeny

Primus is all about Les Claypool; there isn't a moment on any of their
records where his bass isn't the main focal point of the music, with
his vocals acting as a bizarre side-show. Which isn't to deny
guitarist Larry LaLonde or drummer Tim "Herb" Alexander any credit; no
drummer could weave in and around Claypool's convoluted patterns as
effortlessly as Alexander, and few guitarists would willingly push the
spotlight away, like LaLonde does, just to can produce a never-ending
spiral of avant-noise. All of this means that they are miles away from
being another punk-funk combo like the Red Hot Chili Peppers; Claypool
may slap and pop his bass, but there is little funk in the rhythm he
and Alexander lay down. Instead, they're a post-punk Rush spiked with
the sensibility and humor of Frank Zappa. Primus' songs are secondary
to showcasing their instrumental prowess. Their music is willfully
weird and experimental, yet it's not alienating; the band was able to
turn their goofy weirdness into pop stardom. Stephen Thomas Erlewine & Greg Prato, All-Music Guide

One of the nuttier songs I own. This is just fun to listen to, and Les Claypool is somewhat of an eclectic genius musician - writing songs on the fly. Worth a listen. Mudbug, Daily Tunes

making Tag Team the least successful whoompers in chart history.

What a sentence.

The legacy of Tag Team rules on in that "PARTY PEOPLE" snippet they play on all those I Love the 90s commercials.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 04:31 (twenty-one years ago)

"Return of the Mack" is fabulous and although I guess its a little silly I'm not sure what it's doing on this poll.

Re: Tag Team. The most wtf?! thing about them was covered in the Onion's "Least Essential albums of 2000"

Tag Team, The Best Of Tag Team

Have you ever wished that someone would collect all of Tag Team's hits on one convenient album? No? Well, that didn't prevent Bellmark Records from releasing The Best Of Tag Team, collecting everything from "Whoomp! (There It Is) [House Mix]" to "Whoomp! (Si Lo Es)," to the unforgettable "Whoomp! (There It Is) [Remix 2000]" in one handy collection. But what makes The Best Of Tag Team truly inessential is its failure to include the original "Whoomp! (There It Is)," not to mention the group's second biggest pop hit, "Addams Family (Whoomp)," or even that song's long-awaited remix, "Addams Family (Whoomp) There It Is (2000)."

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 05:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Anthony (and others who didn't know about it), "Doop" by Doop (a producer duo from the Netherlands) was a major dancefloor hit in Europe in the mid-nineties; I guess it didn't have much impact in the US. It's basically a techno remix of an old swing jazz song, with an added female vocal that goes like this:

"Doop-doop-doop-doop de-de-dee
dooby-doop-doop-doop de-de-dee
doop-doop-doop-doop de-de-dee
doop-doop-doop-doop de-de-dee"

...where the final "doop-doop-doop-doop de-de-dee" descends, unlike the previous ones which ascend.

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 09:10 (twenty-one years ago)

"Doop" was basically Handbag House meets the Charleston, with a running two-chord sequence that bore a strong similarity to Atlantic Ocean's "Waterfall" (a UK hit at the exact same time). The first time I heard it (on pre-release, in a medium-to-high-cool-factor after-hours basement club), my dancing partner and I instinctively went straight into the whole screaming-nelly crossing-hands-over-bent-knees routine. (Medium-to-high-uncool, and totally OMGWTFLOL.)

Artist: CAKE
Song: THE DISTANCE
No. of votes: 8
Billboard chart peaks: Mainstream Rock #38, Modern Rock #4

http://www.artistdirect.com/showcase//modern/photos/cake.gif

Best-known for their ubiquitous hit "The Distance," Cake epitomized
the postmodern, irony-drenched aesthetic of '90s geek-rock. Their
sound freely mixed and matched pastiches of widely varying genres —
white-boy funk, hip-hop, country, new wave pop, jazz, college rock,
and guitar rock — with a particular delight in the clashes that
resulted. Their songs were filled with lyrical non sequiturs,
pop-culture references, and smirky satire, all delivered with bone-dry
detachment by speak-singing frontman John McCrea. Cake's music most
frequently earned comparisons to Soul Coughing and King Missile, but
lacked the downtown New York artiness of those two predecessors;
instead, Cake cultivated an image of average guys with no illusions or
pretensions about their role as entertainers. At the same time,
critics lambasted what they saw as a smugly superior attitude behind
the band's habitual sarcasm. Perhaps there was something in Cake's
doggedly spare, low-key presentation that amplified their ironic
detachment even when they didn't intend it, but most reviewers pegged
them as one-hit wonders after the success of "The Distance."
Nonetheless, Cake managed a few more alternative-radio hits in the
years that followed, while retaining largely the same approach. Steve
Huey, All-Music Guide

When most rock music fans think of the band Cake, they picture the "guy with a goatee and a hat," says Todd Roper, the band's drummer.

The Sacramento, California, alternative group can't seem to shake the image of lead singer John McCrea's scruffy face enunciating lyrics with off-beat precision, emanating a sort of white-boy groove that has led to such off-kilter hits as "The Distance," that 1996 loveless hit that became the anthem for anyone training for a 5K. But there's more to Cake than McCrea's facial features and fashion sense. "Maybe if the band sticks together for another five years and continues to put out albums that are accepted, the other individuals in the band will have our own celebrity status," says Roper. Billboard chart peaks: Dance #3, R&B #54, Hot 100 #63

http://www.mattscdsingles.com/acatalog/sagat%20funk%20dat%20euro.jpg

Sagat is a Baltimore rapper who produces as "Chico Jump Slamm." His
single "(Funk Dat)" became a club hit in early 1994. John Bush, All-Music Guide

Who have we got to thank for the tragic tale of urban ennui that is "Funk Dat"? My Lord, it’s none other than Sagat! In the "clubs-only", adult version, Sagat sounds like one tough hombre who’s had enough of the travails of modern city living. In the radio version (went to no.25 in Great Britain’s Top Forty), he comes across as a whiney narcissist who hasn’t had a friend since he told his last one to piss off after he called him once too often on his home phone. "Maaaaaaaan, FUNK DAT!" To paraphrase ODB, I don’t have a problem with you fucking me. I have a BIG BASTARD PROBLEM with you funking me. Tanya Headon, I Hate Music

http://xboxzone.co.kr/lab/cvs/character/sagat.gif

I can't find the lyrics to this song anywhere on the internet. WEIRD.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never heard it, but I have a strong memory of a very sleepy kid named Ryan in 6th grade describing it to me. Still makes me smile to remember this kid just going "maaaan FUNK dat!" to me with this look of awe on his face.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Though if my memory is correct this would have happened before 1994. I dunno, maybe I've mixed it up with something else or, I dunno.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm vaguely disturbed that there have already been four songs on this list that I haven't heard. I guess it's good education, though.

Question, Anthony: How many votes did a song end up needing to get on the top 100?

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

haha ONE probably.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope so, anyway. That means "Poing" and "Television: The Drug of the Nation" will get onto the CD-R no matter what.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Question:

Why is it that every time I'm walking down the street, someone wants to stop me just to give me a flyer?

Maaan, funk dat!

LFO (Lyte Funky Ones) formed in the boy-band mecca of Orlando, FL in
1996; there singer Rich Cronin befriended aspiring model Brad
Fischetti, and as a duo they spent the next two years honing their
vocal, dancing and songwriting skills. With the addition of third
vocalist Devin Lima, LFO's line-up was complete, and the trio toured
in support of the Backstreet Boys and N'Sync before releasing their
self-titled debut album in 1999, scoring a hit with the single "Summer
Girls." The attempted to do it again in summer 2001 with the release
of Life Is Good. Jason Ankeny, All-Music Guide

Hip Hop Marmalade sPIC AND sPAN
Met you one summer and it all began
You're the best girl that I ever did see
The great Larry BIRD JERSEY 33
When you take a sip you buzzlike a hornet
Billy Shakespere wrote a whole bunch of sonnets

Call me Willy Whistle cuz I can't speak baby
Sumthin in your eyes went and drove me crazy
Now I can't 4get you and it makes me mad
Left one day and never came back
Stayed all summer then went back home
Macauly Culkin wasn't Home Alone
Fell deep in love but now we ain't speakin
Michael J Fox was Alex P Keaton
When I met you I said my name was Rich
You look like a girl from Abercrombie and Fitch

CHORUS

Cheery Pez cold crush rock star boogie
Used to hate school so I had to play hookie
Always been hip to the BBOY Style
Known to act wild and mak a girl smile
Love New Edition and the Candy Girl
Reminds me of you becuz you rock my world
You come from Georgia where the peaches grow
They drink lemonade and speak real slow
You love hip hop and rock n roll
Dad took off when you were 4 years old
There was a good man named Paul REVERE
I feel much better baby when you're near

You love fun dip and cherry COKE
I like the way you laugh when I tell a joke
When I met you I said my name was Rich
You look like a girl from Abercrombie and Fitch

CHORUS

In the summertime girls got it goin on
Shake and wigle to a hip hop song
Summertime girls are the kind I like
I'll steal your honey like I stole your bike

Bugaloo shrimp and pogo sticks
My mind takes me back there oh so quick
Let you off the hook like my man MR. Lipit
Think about that summer and I bug cuz I miss it

Like the color purple macaroni and cheese
Ruby red slippers and a bunch oftrees
Call you up but whats the use
I like Kevin Bacon but I hate Footloose

Came in the door said it before
I think I'm over you but I'm really not sure
When I met you I said my name was Rich
You look like a girl from Abercrombie and Fitch

CHORUS

Song: SUPERMODEL (YOU BETTER WORK)
No. of votes: 8
Billboard chart peaks: Dance #1, Hot 100 #45

http://www.laeyeworks.com/noshock/faces/rupaulig.jpg

A major media presence thanks to his outgoing persona and campy
theatrics, RuPaul was a popular attraction on '90s dancefloors as
well, scoring several club hits with hi-NRG Euro-disco pop. Born
Rupaul Andre Charles, he grew up in San Diego, learning fashion tips
from his mother and three sisters. After some time spent in Atlanta as
a used-car salesman, RuPaul moved to New York and grew interested in
the Manhattan club scene of the '80s. By the early '90s, he had begun
performing and signed a contract in 1991 with the hip-hop label Tommy
Boy Records. Though RuPaul's debut album, Supermodel of the World was
released in 1993, it failed to score with pop audiences until the
following year, when the club success of the single "Supermodel (You
Better Work)" carried over to a spot just outside of the Top 40. His
duet with Elton John, "Don't Go Breaking My Heart," also placed on the
American charts but proved more successful in Europe, where the two
co-hosted England's Brit Awards and RuPaul taped a popular Christmas
special. He also appeared in two films, The Brady Bunch Movie and
Spike Lee's Crooklyn; the exposure gained him his own show for VH1,
The RuPaul Show. After moving to Rhino for his second album Foxy Lady,
RuPaul scored in the clubs once again with the single "Snapshot." John
Bush, All-Music Guide

for the past 3 weeks, i've been haunted by the music of TEVIN CAMPBELL. it started when i heard I'M READY on MICHELLE VISAGE' radio station in L.A. and ever since, at least one of he songs has been in heavy rotation in me head (CAN WE TALK, ALWAYS IN MY HEART, DON'T SAY GOODBYE GIRL). i never really got him the first time 'round 12 years ago, but now i worship him. it sucks that someone so talented can be discarded by "the industry" so easily. apparently, there was a nasty police entrapment scene, not unlike the GEORGE MICHAEL, men's bathroom conflama. the music lives on. She's a whore They said it 'til you

She's a bore They made her beg
Them for more My Aunt Mary
Aunt Mary
Aunt Mary says
They have the darkness there in their eyes
Saint Joe he said he's never been made
Up like a woman
Saint Joe the time is coming when...
When Mary never will return
When Mary never will come back here...
Yeah Mary never will return
O' Mary please
Come home
O' my aunt Mary
Aunt Mary
Aunt Mary says they have
The darkness there in their eyes

They have the family disease
They have the darkness there in their minds

Artist: PRIMITIVE RADIO GODS
Song: STANDING OUTSIDE A BROKEN PHONE BOOTH yadda yadda yadda
No of votes: 8
Billboard Chart Peaks: Adult 40 #19, Mainstream Rock #32, Modern Rock #1, Top 40 #7

http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/record-reviews/images/p/primitive-radio-gods/rocket.gif

The Primitive Radio Gods' smashing chart debut "Standing Outside a
Broken Phone Booth With Money in My Hand" was an unforgettable radio
mainstay and MTV favorite during the summer of 1996. It quickly
defined the band as another alterna-rock innovator integrating catchy
hooks and a hip-hop/new wave mix. The debut album Rocket went gold,
and earned the band top spots across the album and singles charts as
well. Not too bad for frontman Chris O'Connor. This was a rock & roll
fantasy come true for this air traffic controller, whose side gig, the
I-Rails, had been struggling for ten years prior. However, the hype
surrounding the PRG quickly faded. Music industry politics played into
the scheme and before the new millennium dawned, and the band's
sophomore effort was scrapped and the band was dropped from Columbia.
Another quickie deal from Hi-Fi/Sire Records came to the rescue, but
that too failed when contractual differences and a shift in bandmates
created more chaos for the PRG. A whirlwind time, more than three
years since their debut, and the band played on. In early 2000, PRG
resurfaced with a complete roster including Jim Sparks, Tim Laurterio,
and Luke McAuliffe. A deal with What Are Records? marked the second
coming of this stereotyped one-hit wonder, and the long awaited
follow-up, White Hot Peach, was issued in early 2001. Mackenzie Wilson, All-Music Guide

Take Primitive Radio Gods' "Standing Outside a Broken Phone Booth With Money in My Hand." The song centers around the B.B. King classic "How Blue Can You Get?" written by Leonard Feather, the noted late jazz critic and avowed enemy of rock'n'roll (who would be no doubt highly displeased to know he could be the answer to a coming alternative-era game of Trivial Pursuit). "Phone Booth"'s atmospheric mood borrows the melody of Lou Reed's "Walk on the Wild Side" as well as sampling the "How Blue?" chorus. It's a seductive mix of old and new, opening with the sound of a needle touching down on a vinyl record and B.B.'s scratchy voice crying out, "I've been downhearted, baby." Several gloomy verses later, you're left with the impression that singer Chris O'Connor is a bit downhearted himself. The dirge builds to a great climax when O'Connor actually tries to emulate B.B., an unintentionally hilarious point (and one we can all identify with), as his smooth, unaffected warble falls flat against King's huskier inflections. Artist: PUFF DADDY FEAT. JIMMY PAGE & FUZZBUBBLE
Song: COME WITH ME
Billboard chart peaks: Hot 100 #4, Rap #1(!!!!!), R&B #19

http://www.ewsonline.com/badboy/fuzzbubble/pic5.jpg http://www.jimmy-page.com/page2000.jpg http://webhome.idirect.com/~jinsaku/Godzilla.jpg

The biggest hip-hop impresario of the mid-'90s, Sean "Puffy" Combs —
alternately known as Puff Daddy or P. Diddy — created a multi-million
dollar industry around Bad Boy Entertainment, with recordings by the
Notorious B.I.G., Craig Mack, Faith Evans, 112, and Total, all
produced and master-minded by Combs himself. Responsible for over 100
million dollars in total record sales and named ASCAP's 1996
Songwriter of the Year, Combs was, on the other hand, criticized by
many in the hip-hop community for watering down the sound of the
underground and also for a perceived over-reliance on samples as
practically the sole basis for many of his hits. A very successful A&R
executive at Uptown Records during the early '90s responsible for
sizeable hit records by Father MC, Mary J. Blige, and Jodeci, Combs
formed his own Bad Boy label, signed Notorious B.I.G., Evans, and
Craig Mack, and earned enough hits to cement an alliance with Arista
Records. A highly publicized feud with Death Row Records (in which
Tupac Shakur and label head Suge Knight served as West Coast/Dark Side
equivalents to the Notorious B.I.G. and Combs) was summarily ended in
late 1996, when Shakur was murdered and Knight jailed. Six months
later, Notorious B.I.G. was dead as well and after Combs mourned his
friend's death, he hit the pop charts in a big way during his biggest
year, 1997. John Bush & Bradley Torreano, All-Music Guide

This is a great song the rap goes perfectly with the beat that kicks in a third of the way through. Review Centre

I'm a little disappointed in the PRG's showing, but I guess top 20's not too bad.

Lyrics, because they're totally gorgeous in an OMGWTFLOL(ROFFLE) sort of way. All from memory so forgive me if a word or two are off:

Jan lies down and wrestles in her sleep
moonlight spills on comic books and superstars in magazines
an old friend calls and tells us where to meet
her plane takes off from Baltimore and touches down on Bourbon Street

do do do do do do do...

we sit outside and argue all night long
about a god we've never seen but never fails to side with me
Sunday comes and all the papers say
Mother Theresa's joined the mob and happy with her full-time job

do do do do do do do...

Am I alive or thoughts that drift away?
does summer come for everyone, can humans do what prophets say?
and if I die before I learn to speak
will money pay for all the days I lived awake but half asleep?

do do do do do do do...

Life is time to teach you growing old
seconds ticking killed us all a million years before the fall
we ride the waves and don't ask where they go
we swim like lions through the crest and (no idea on this part)

I've been downhearted baby
I've been downhearted baby
ever since the day we met
ever since the day we met

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Every day I spend without a copy of the "Come With Me" video is a day wasted.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I taped pretty much every music video played on MTV from 1996 to 1999 so I must have that video on tape somewhere. Do you have a copy?

It's by far my least favorite of the Puff Daddy overambitious music video trilogy (with "Been Around the World" and "Victory").

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I need to find an entire Puffy video retrospective. You realize that the "overambitious trilogy" is so over the top that it doesn't include two Spize Jonze videos and one where Mase and Puffy walk down a mirrored hallway as bombs drop behind them and money litters the air?

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

They need to give Puffy the Video Vanguard NOW.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

God, Puffy really did rule the world from '97-'99 didn't he? It's not even a question. And he didn't even get mentioned on I Love the 90s. Shameful.

And only one of those Spike Jonze videos was actually his, but god was it terrible. I actually like the non-rock remix version of "It's All About the Benjamins" and the accompanying video quite a bit. I saw a version of the video recently for the first time where they cut out B.I.G.'s verse entirely and instead have...Puffy tap-dancing. It's seriously bizarre and significantly worse.

Also, hands up if you heard "Come With Me" before "Kashmir". I guess I might be the only one young enough to have been that ignorant in '98, though.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 23:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah, the other one was for a B.I.G. track (with kids pretending they're puffy and biggie). Forgot. Anyhow, I love the Rock Remix video. When Lil Kim rips off her prom dress and her date is like UHHHH???!!! The inexplicable presence of Tommy Stinson! A girl in a prom dress throwing a trash can through a trophy case while the weak-armed Puffy runs screaming through a hallway? HELL YEAH!

C+C Music Factory wasn't really a group — it was the product of Robert
Clivillés and David Cole, two pop-savvy dance producers. In 1989,
Clivillés and Cole hired all the singers and created all the tracks
for Gonna Make You Sweat, C+C Music Factory's first album. While it
was prepackaged, it wasn't necessarily faceless; in Freedom Williams,
the producers had a solid, if not original or distinctive, rapper.
What was really important to the success of the album was how
Clivillés and Cole assembled the tracks, melding hip-hop and club
sensibilities to mindlessly catchy pop songs. The three hit singles —
"Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)," "Here We Go," "Things
That Make You Go Hmmmm..." — were very good pop singles, and all of
them were massive hits in early 1991. Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All-Music Guide

Formed in a squat in Leeds, England in 1984, the anarchist pop group
Chumbawamba was a most unlikely mainstream success story; after more
than a decade in relative obscurity, much of it spent attacking the
very notion of stardom, they signed to a major label in 1997, quickly
scoring a major international hit with the riotous single
"Tubthumping." Chumbawamba originally comprised former Men in a
Suitcase frontman Dunst, onetime Ow My Hair's on Fire drummer Alice
Nutter and computer technician Lou Watts. After recording a song for a
compilation album, they teamed with Harry Hamer and Mavis Dillon —
members of one of the LP's other contributors, the Passion Killers —
and the Chumbawamba lineup was complete. The band quickly became a
thorn in the side of British conservatives, mounting a series of
benefit concerts for a variety of anti-Thatcherite causes and
campaigns; before long, they were also the subject of frequent police
raids. Jason Ankeny, All-Music Guide

God I hate that song. Annoyingly, at school, kids in my year who had watched too many teen comedies decided to make a yearbook. So people had to write an entry for one of their friends. I didn't pay any attention, so my arch-enemy wrote mine. He wrote the 'He drinks a' bit from Tubthumpin' out as my entry, then made some jokes about how much I drank. Damn you, Chumbawumba!

Chumbawamba (not Chumbawumba, illiterates), is great! I listened to them a lot during my youthful anarchist days. "Anarchy" is a great LP, though it sounds extremely dated today. The huge success of "Tubthumping" was kind of a surprise to me, even though the single is good. I guess I thought Chumbawamba would always be this little anarchist secret: a pop band making catchy songs with revolutionary lyrics. "Tubthumper" the album was disappointing though.

This Pittsburgh male/female dance duo had a huge international smash in 1990 with "The Power." London-based rapper Turbo B and his cousin Jackie Harris teamed on "The Power," with Harris' curdling vocal elevating Turbo B's pedestrian rap. But by the time things got rolling, Harris was already gone, replaced by Pennye Ford, a former Gap Band background vocalist. Turbo B himself departed in 1992, shortly after their second Arista LP, The Madman's Return, hit the streets. He was replaced by Niki Harris, a former Madonna background vocalist. Snap had a second big hit in 1990 with the number five pop single "Rhythm Is a Dancer." Ron Wynn, All-Music Guide

You know what a big miss on this poll was? ESPN's "Jock Jam Megamix". Listening to it now for the first time in years--remember how ubiquitous this shit was? Soundtracked pretty much every sporting event of my young life.

Artist: GREEN JELLY
Song: THREE LITTLE PIGS
Billboard chart peak: Hot 100 #17

http://www.primalx.com/rockfolio/signed/greenjello.jpg

Green Jelly began life as Green Jello in 1981 in Kenmore, New York. The name was chosen due to the band's poor opinion of that flavor, and they decided that it also appropriately reflected the quality of their music. The band never attempted to be good, deciding instead to "disguise their lack of ability with stupid props," as their liner notes put it. The group appeared on The Gong Show touting themselves as the world's worst band, but the real turning point came when they met Gwar in 1988 and learned how to sculpt props and costumes with latex, papier-mache, chicken wire, and couch cushions. They attracted a small, curious following with their bizarre, cartoonish look and wound up signing with Zoo Records as a video-only band. They released a video album called Cereal Killer, using simple, bubblegum metal songs as an excuse to dance around in silly costumes, and the clay-animation video for "Three Little Pigs" became an MTV hit, spawning the release of an EP and later the full soundtrack to the video album. With success came lawsuits for trademark infringement; the band was forced to change their name to Green Jelly and also had to put an edited version of "Cereal Killer" on their audio release, as the cereal companies whose mascots were murdered in the video did not take kindly to it. Band members, who have exceeded 74 in number over the years, perform under aliases such as Marshall Staxx and Jesus Quisp. The band was able to sell records based on their visual weirdness for several years, doing fine up through the mid-'90s. Steve Huey, All-Music Guide

[Maynard] also sings the "not by the hair on my chinny-chin-chin" part on Green Jelly's "3 Little Pigs." (Yes, Green Jelly as in originally Green Jello as in Jello Loft where the live tracks from "Opiate" were recorded). The Tool FAQ

Song: PEOPLE ARE STILL HAVING SEX
No. of votes: 9

http://www.mattscdsingles.com/acatalog/6435%20new.jpg

LaTour was the alias of Chicago-based house producer William LaTour, who in 1991 scored a major club crossover smash with the novelty hit "People Are Still Having Sex," featured on his self-titled debut LP. Subsequent attempts to repeat this early success — like the follow-up "Allen's Got a New Hi-Fi" — failed, however, and 1993's Home on the Range appeared to little notice, with LaTour dropping entirely out of sight soon after. Damn, I head no idea Snap! was such a UK powerhouse.

"Rhythm is a Dancer" is one of the most overrated singles of the 90s. "The Power" is way, way better, and I only really like about half of that song.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Thursday, 14 October 2004 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Thursday, 14 October 2004 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

LaTour didn't do much over here, either, with that being their lone hit, #15 in June '91.

Billboard chart peaks: Adult 40 #7, Modern Rock #5, Hot 100 #9, Top 40 Mainstream #3

http://musicmoz.org/img/editors/pipvis/len_youcantstopthebumrush.jpg

The alternative pop/dance group LEN was formed in Toronto in 1991 by Marc "The Burger Pimp" Costanzo and his sister Sharon, initially to perform punk-pop-style music. However, an outside interest in hip-hop gradually crept into the group's style over the course of the EP and two full-length independent albums they issued from 1992-1996 (including 1996's Get Your Legs Broke). As time passed, LEN picked up new members, including D Rock, DJ Moves, and Planet Pea. National exposure of the bright, laid-back pop single "Steal My Sunshine" on the soundtrack of the 1999 film Go set the stage for LEN's debut album, You Can't Stop the Bum Rush, later that year. Artist: KING MISSILE
Song: DETACHABLE PENIS
No. of votes: 10
Billboard chart peak: Modern Rock #25

http://www.levity.com/corduroy/images/kingm2.jpg

Essentially a vehicle for the musings of John S. Hall, King Missile merged off-kilter spoken word monologues with eclectic, mildly psychedelic rock & roll. Hall's dry, absurdist sense of humor colored much of the group's output, blurring the lines between comedy, Beat poetry, narrative prose, and simple rock lyrics. Yet in spite of their focus on Hall's literary bent and all its New York artiness, King Missile was most definitely a band, and relied on music to play a much more than perfunctory role in their overall effect. The band initially won a following on college radio with several albums for producer Kramer's eccentric Shimmy-Disc label, while surviving a major lineup overhaul. Signed to a major-label deal with Atlantic, they scored a highly unlikely novelty hit with 1992's "Detachable Penis," which conquered MTV and college radio despite its subject matter. Their new audience didn't stick, however, and the second lineup split after another album; Hall later organized a third version of King Missile, and continued recording. Steve Huey, All-Music Guide

I'm glad I wrote it, and it is a shame that it... I think the biggest shame is the way it was used by shock jocks, and the way it was misinterpreted and correlated with John Bobbitt. So a lot of kind of heinous things were done. But that's just sort of a function of the radio. You can be like Cat Stevens and say, "I renounce everything I've ever recorded, and I don't want them to play it on the radio, and I don't want them selling the records," but that's kind of an extreme view. John S. Hall, Onion A.V. Club Interview

http://www.glitterrock.org/hallocaps/detachablepenis.jpg

I woke up this morning with a bad hangover, and my penis was missing again. This happens all the time. It's detachable. This comes in handy a lot of the time. I can leave it home when I think it's going to get me in trouble, or I can rent it out when I don't need it. But now and then I go to a party, get drunk, and the next morning I can't for the life of me remember what I did with it. First I looked around my apartment and I couldn't find it, so I called up the place where the party was, they hadn't seen it either. I asked them to check the medicine cabinet coz for some reason, I leave it there sometimes, but not this time. So I told them if it pops up to let me know. I called a few people who were at the party, but they were no help either. I was starting to get desperate. I really don't like being without my penis for too long. It makes me feel like less of a man and I really hate to have to sit down every time I take a leak. After a few hours of searching the house and calling everyone I could think of, I was starting to get very depressed, so I went to the Kiev and ate breakfast. Then as I walked down Second Avenue toward St. Mark's Place, where all those people sell used books and other junk on the street, I saw my penis lying on a blanket next to a broken toaster oven. Some guy was selling it. I had to buy it off him. He wanted 22 bucks, but I talked him down to 17. I took it home, washed it off, and put it back on. I was happy again. Complete. People sometimes tell me I should get it permanently attached, but I don't know. Even though sometimes it's a pain in the ass, I like having a detachable penis.

I suppose I'm finally going to have to listen to this song now.

Artist: JORDY
Song: DUR DUR D'ETRE BEBE! (IT'S TOUGH TO BE A BABY)
Votes: 11
Billboard chart peaks: Hot 100 #58, Hot Latin Tracks #11 (?!?!?!?1)

http://yokohama.cool.ne.jp/belepi/jordy.jpg http://yokohama.cool.ne.jp/belepi/jordy.jpg http://yokohama.cool.ne.jp/belepi/jordy.jpg http://yokohama.cool.ne.jp/belepi/jordy.jpg http://yokohama.cool.ne.jp/belepi/jordy.jpg http://yokohama.cool.ne.jp/belepi/jordy.jpg

The youngest performer ever to have a number one record anywhere in the world, Jordy topped the charts in his native France when he was just four and a half years old. His dancefloor hit "Dur Dur D'Être Bébé" (translated approximately as "It's Tough to Be a Baby") also made him the youngest ever to reach the charts in the U.S., though the novelty of hearing a preschooler chanting French lyrics wasn't quite as broadly appealing to American ears. Jordy was born Jordy Lemoine on January 14, 1988, in the town of Caen, in France's Brittany region. His parents were Claude Lemoine, a record producer best known in France for his work with the glam-influenced Rockets, and Patricia Clerget, a songwriter and former singer who'd released a couple of records in the early '80s. By the time he was a toddler, Jordy was already singing along with records of classic French chansonniers, and his performances became a popular gimmick at his parents' parties. Soon they hit upon the idea of turning Jordy into a commercial recording artist. Jordy's performance abilities impressed executives at Columbia Records, which released Jordy's debut single, "Dur Dur D'Être Bébé," in 1992. It rocketed to the top of the French charts and sold over two million copies on its way to becoming a hit across Europe and Japan. The album Pochette Surprise (Surprise Package) followed on its heels, and it too sold well, despite a bit of padding with remixes. Released in the U.S., "Dur Dur D'Être Bébé" didn't fare quite as well, but it did manage to chart, topping out at number 58. Jordy spent parts of 1993-1994 in the U.S., recording some of the material that became his second album, Potion Magique. Released in 1994, it was heavy on Christmas material, including his title song for the French film Allo Maman, C'est Noël.However, reports were beginning to surface that suggested a lapse in parental responsibilities; amid some more disturbing allegations, the French government — concerned that Jordy was simply being exploited for commercial gain — stepped in and banned his music from radio and television for his own good. Under the ban, his third album, La Récréation, sank without a trace. In 1996, his parents opened a children's tourist attraction called La Ferme de Jordy (Jordy's Farm). It was an unmitigated financial failure, and when it closed down, Jordy's parents divorced. Jordy was legally emancipated and spent the remainder of his teen years living on a farm near Caen, where he studied dance and drumming; he also developed a fondness for techno, and was rumored to be attempting an acting career. John, a person who stuttered, was known for his "scatsinging" and wrote that is was an example of how his "greatest problem has become my greatest asset." Professionally he was best known for his successful recordings in Europe on the BMG/RCA label. His first single, "Scatman" was recorded September 1994 and released in Germany December 1994. John wrote that two of the four verses of this song dealt directly with his stuttering (see http://www.mnsu.edu/dept/comdis/kuster/Creativeexpression/larkin.html ). John received "Best New International Artist of the Year" in Japan and the German "ECHO" award for foreign artists. He also received awards from Italy, France, Poland, Hong Kong and elsewhere. Only the ninth place? Damn, Scatman John was robbed! I will always, always, always love Scatman John, and he would've been my number one vote, had that been possible. He wasn't perhaps the best Europop act, but he was certainly the most sympathetic. When I heard he had died, it made me immensely sad. RIP.

the omgwtflol reasoning of 'Informer' is interesting in light of the comments upthread re C&C and other rap-based dance tracks

I'm not quite sure what this means, but I just want to note that I am not endorsing "Informer" as the #1 OMGWTFLOL track of the decade. I didn't even vote for it.

You're all under underestimating the power of the Fairbrass Brothers!

Incredibly enough, "I'm Too Sexy" was not nominated for the poll.

Dude I just voted for the ten songs I liked best. I figured if I like it and it's a pop tune then that makes it pretty fucking absurd right there. Or whatever the purpose of this poll is. IMHO the purpose of this poll is to make the other 90's hits poll look silly. Which it does. Finish up!

4 Non Blondes howled their way onto the charts in 1993 with "What's Up?" and then vanished without a whisper. Formed in 1989 with Linda Perry (vocals), Roger Rocha (guitar), Christa Hillhouse (bass), and Dawn Richardson (drums), 4 Non Blondes had no problems attracting major labels, but they didn't know how to market them. The band was eventually signed to Interscope Records and released Bigger, Better, Faster, More? in 1992. Dominated by Perry's high-pitched singing, "What's Up?" was slowly added to modern rock stations and then crossed over into the mainstream, peaking at number 11 on the Billboard Top 200. The video for "What's Up?" became a smash on MTV, propelling sales of the album to over six-million copies worldwide. "What's Up?" was selected as Best Song by the Bay Area Music Awards; moreover, Perry was chosen as Best Female Vocalist and Bigger, Better, Faster, More? won for Best Album. The group toured with Neil Young, Pearl Jam, and Bob Dylan. The band recorded tunes for the soundtracks to Wayne's World 2 and Airheads. However, Perry felt that the group had become too pop; consequently, she left 4 Non Blondes. She released her solo debut, In Flight, in 1995. Perry departed from Interscope Records in 1998 and recorded her second full-length, After Hours, for her own label, Rockstar Records. Michael Sutton, All-Music Guide

The tiny club was filled way beyond capacity. The smell of sweaty bodies and clove cigarettes made the air thick and nauseating. But the music I heard coming from the band on stage was too captivating to allow me a healthy panic attack, which woulda caused me to bolt outta there to the safety of the drugged-out, hippy scene just outside the bar. What happened instead is each funky, raucous, LOUD song drew me closer to the stage. By mid-set I'd shoved, punched and kicked my way to the front where I stood at Linda's floor speaker pleasantly speechless. I couldn't believe all the voices and all the volume coming out of this tiny chick wearing dreadlocks and a weird, exaggerated Dr. Seuss hat. Her acoustic guitar looked way bigger than the rocker who cradled it in her arms onstage. For the encore Linda looked down at me and smiled with full force. She asked if I had a request she could play for me. I think I mumbled something incoherent. Linda Perry said she'd pick one for me. It was a catchy little ditty with a sing-song chorus that the audience helped chant. Linda's powerful voice was still beautiful by the time she finished her future multi-platinum hit song, "What's Up". She leaned closer again and asked if I liked the song. I liked it. Fusing a neo-rockabilly image with contemporary dance-pop rhythms, singer Jimmy Ray was born and raised in East London, where he grew up on a steady diet of classic Elvis, Cliff Richard and Tommy Steele singles. He later surfaced in a techno duo called A.V., recording an album which went unreleased; upon mounting a solo career, Ray was signed by manager Simon Fuller, the same impresario who launched the Spice Girls to superstardom. His debut single, "Are You Jimmy Ray?," was issued in the UK in late 1997, becoming a hit both at home and in the U.S.; a self-titled LP followed the next year. Jason Ankeny, All-Music Guide

Of the innumerable one-hit wonders littering the cultural landscape, few, if any, were so brave, so frequently brilliant, and so deliciously weird as the Flaming Lips. To even classify the Lips as merely a one-hit wonder is to do the group a grave injustice: although their standing as a commercial entity proved little more than a blip on the radar screen, their moment of Top 40 success was simply another pit-stop on one of the more surreal and haphazard career trajectories in pop music — an acid-bubblegum band with as much affinity for sweet melodies as blistering noise assaults, their off-kilter sound, uncommon emotional depth, and bizarre history (packed with tales of self-immolating fans and the like) firmly established them as one of the true originals of the post-punk era. Best known for his insistent 1993 club hit "What Is Love," Eurodisco enigma Haddaway was born in Trinidad but raised in Cologne, Germany. Little else is known about the performer, later based in Monaco; his 1993 debut, Haddaway—The Album, launched the smash "What Is Love," which was not only a hit upon its initial release but subsequently enjoyed renewed popularity thanks to its recurring use in the Saturday Night Live sketch which formed the basis for the 1998 film comedy A Night at the Roxbury. In the meantime, Haddaway issued two new LPs — 1996's The Drive and 1998's Let's Do It Now — neither of them as successful as his debut. Jason Ankeny, All-Music Guide

This vocal quartet formed as high school students in Oklahoma City before relocating to New York. They proved adept at both churning dance tunes and sincere ballads. Signing to Giant Records, they broke through in 1991 with their performance of "I Wanna Sex You Up" on the soundtrack of New Jack City. Released as a single, the song topped the R&B charts, went Top Five pop, and enjoyed double-platinum sales. They followed it with the gold-selling "I Adore Mi Amor," which hit #1 on both the pop and R&B charts. The singles set the stage for the first Color Me Badd album, C.M.B., which sold over three million copies and spawned the gold-selling number one pop hit "All 4 Love" as well as the Top 20 singles "Thinkin' Back" and "Slow Motion." Color Me Badd's next single was another movie soundtrack song, "Forever Love" from Mo' Money, their sixth consecutive single to reach the Top 20. They finished 1992 second only to Boyz II Men as the top pop singles act of the year. After slating fans' thirst for a new album with the remix collection Young, Gifted and Badd - The Remixes, the group issued their second album of new material, Time and Chance, in November 1993. It featured two Top 20 pop singles, the title track (which also made the R&B Top Ten) and "Choose," and went gold, but that was a commercial disappointment after the enormous success of the first album. Now & Forever (1996) gave Color Me Badd a final Top 20 pop single in "The Earth, the Sun, the Rain," but it barely registered in the charts. The group switched to Sony for a final album, Awakening, but its commercial failure led them to disband. Ron Wynn & William Ruhlmann, All-Music Guide

Skee-Lo was an anomaly in the rap world of the '90s: instead of spinning violent gangsta tales or extolling the virtues of marijuana, Skee's songs were profanity-free, good-time stories with a self-deprecating sense of humor. Skee-Lo was born in Poughkeepsie, NY, and moved to Riverside, CA, at age nine. He was turned on to rap by Kurtis Blow records, admiring their down-to-earth quality. His I Wish single, with a video that parodied Forrest Gump, became a huge hit on radio and MTV during the summer of 1995, and his identically titled debut album was released shortly thereafter. Five years later, Skee-Lo resurfaced to issue his long-awaited follow-up I Can't Stop. Steve Huey, All-Music Guide

With their clever, smug lyrics and cloying folk-tinged melodies, the Crash Test Dummies were a perfect rock band for affluent '90s college students and yuppies. Their first album was a huge hit in their native Canada, but only gained a small cult following in other parts of the world. Thanks to former Talking Head Jerry Harrison's clean, radio-friendly production, the follow-up, God Shuffled His Feet (1993), broke big in the States and, in turn, Europe. The first single from the album, "MMM MMM MMM MMM," became a worldwide Top Ten hit, making the group a minor sensation with their self-consciously bizarre lyrics and singer/songwriter Brad Roberts' deep baritone. A Worm's Life followed in 1996, and three years later the Crash Test Dummies resurfaced with Give Yourself a Hand. Frontman Brad Roberts resurfaced in fall 2000 with a solo album, Crash Test Dude, a collection of acoustic hits from the Crash Test Dummies and eclectic covers. It was also during this time that Roberts suffered a serious car crash, almost losing his arm. Seven months later, however, Roberts returned to the Crash Test Dummies circuit to issue I Don't Care That You Don't Mind, a brand-new batch of songs written with lobster fishermen/musicians whom Roberts met during his rehabilitation. Late 2001 and early 2002 saw more solo albums from members (Ellen Reid's Cinderellen and Mitch Dorge's As Trees Walking) and the Dummies became more Brad Roberts' project than a traditional band. A new three-piece unit with Reid, Brad Roberts and original bassist Dan Roberts released the Christmas album Jingle All the Way in late 2002 but limited distribution made the album hard to find. The album was reissued in late 2003 along with a new album, Puss 'n' Boots, with Reid and Dan Roberts adding to what was originally planned as a Brad Roberts solo album. Canadian rapper Snow scored one of 1993's biggest hits with his single "The Informer." His patois-laced song soared up the pop and R&B charts, even though only hardcore reggae listeners could understand it without a lyric translation sheet. The album 12 Inches of Snow also did well, with the second single, "Girl I've Been Hurt," becoming a hit. Ron Wynn, All-Music Guide

He doesn't claim to be original -- he admits to taking from many different kinds of music, but says he creates his own style with it. With eight producers named the album, including his 7-year-old daughter, Justuss, its no wonder his music is a mesh of different hip-hop and reggae flavours.

Snow's many references to "Informer" on his seventh album, hints at how much he's still riding on the success of the surprise hit. The 1993 single made the Guinness Book of World Records as the biggest-selling reggae single and highest-charting reggae single in the U.S.

Snow admits he will probably never have the same success again -- saying the inspiration for that song came from jail.

"Never again!" he proclaims, "Then I start thinking, damn that was a big song, that was a big hit, maybe I should get back into jail and write another one. But I'm like, I'd rather not have another hit and stay out of jail." Snow Dreams It All Up Again, JAM! Magazine

Some may complain that the thread is just full of hyperconfident black artists and dorky white ones, but judging by Skee-Lo and Snow's placement in the chart, we find the inverse even funnier.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 15 October 2004 23:41 (twenty-one years ago)

If anybody should be mad, it should be the Canadians. Except they should just be happy that Alanis and Celine didn't show up.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 15 October 2004 23:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Mad that it implies the Crash Test Dummies are the second-best we have to offer?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 15 October 2004 23:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Or that we find you canucks so endlessly hilarious. See potential '70s, '80s and 00's OMGWTFLOLers like Nickelback, Loverboy, Rush, Avril Lavigne and Sum 41.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 15 October 2004 23:51 (twenty-one years ago)

haha all classic except Nickelback. It still seems more flattering than insulting.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 15 October 2004 23:52 (twenty-one years ago)

It should be!

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 15 October 2004 23:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm assuming these are all songs that for reasons ironic or not, we all look back on fondly with amusement (not necessarily mockery). The only one that IMO doesn't belong is 4 Non Blondes, which is a fucking evil, atrocious song and the best argument for cruel, hateful misogyny that I can think of.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 15 October 2004 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Britain really loved the CTD's, once:

2 Crash Test Dummies Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm Single Apr 1994
2 Crash Test Dummies God Shuffled His Feet Album May 1994
23 Crash Test Dummies Afternoons And Coffeespoons Single Jul 1994
30 Crash Test Dummies The Ballad Of Peter Pumpkinhead Single Apr 1995

And we loved Snow just the once:

2 Snow Informer Single Mar 1993

Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm was kept off #1 by either Take That or Prince; Informer was kept off #1 by either 2 Unlimited, Shaggy, or The Bluebells.

What was the thinking behind 'Brooklyn Zoo' and 'Method Man' being nominated? Ah well. It was a good poll, thanks for running it - I'm going to have to download about half of them because as far as I know they passed me by.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Saturday, 16 October 2004 00:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Since when did "Da Da Da" become a 90s song?

i'm so proud to see my little nomination at #1

The MOST OMGWTFROFL revelation on this thread:

Snow's many references to "Informer" on his seventh album, hints at how much he's still riding on the success of the surprise hit.

dude, snow made SEVEN ALBUMS?!?!?!?!

Miccio: Are there plans The 40 Most OMGWTFLOL(ROFFLE) Songs Of The 80s or 70s?
This was well worth the wait.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Saturday, 16 October 2004 05:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I really don't get the OMGWTFLOLness of "What Is Love", and I'm not talking about race here. Unlike "Scatman", "What Is Love" is really no different from the other Euro dance hits of the early nineties. In fact, it's even less OMGWTFLOL than most of those songs because it's lacking the cheesiest quality of Europop, that is, the Euro rapping. Is this to imply that all Europop was inherently funny?

Is Life the one that goes "life...life...will never be the same...life...life is changing yeeeaahaaha"?

Yes, it is, and at least in Finland it was even a bigger hit than "What Is Love".

Tuomas (Tuomas), Saturday, 16 October 2004 08:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I think that early 90's Euro-Dance is inherently OMGWTFLOL to many people, and I guess that the fact that many of those songs actually hit it big in the USA might have something to do with that; the very concept of that happening seems so...quaint these days, I guess.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Saturday, 16 October 2004 10:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Early 90s euro-dance is inherently OMGWTFLOL to me, yes. It was then (it was to almost everyone in my peer group. I guess I just saw it as dance music for little kids and funny uncool foreigners). I see it a bit differently now, but not that differently.

Damn, I head no idea Snap! was such a UK powerhouse.

"Rhythm is a Dancer" is one of the most overrated singles of the 90s. "The Power" is way, way better, and I only really like about half of that song.

-- The Good Dr. Bill (fadeout9...), October 14th, 2004 7:57 PM.

'The Power' has the odd OMGWTFLOL lyrical turn, but its.. power overcomes this. It's a fucking awesome track. Never heard anything else by Snap! I liked much though, and yeah, 'Rhythm Is A Dancer' seems totally overrated on ILM by comparison. I'm still sore that 'The Power'> didn't make the proper poll.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 16 October 2004 10:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Deep Blue Something - Breakfast at Tiffany's (5)
Baz Luhrman – Sunscreen (5)

Wow - I thought these two were dead certs for the top 40. I should have voted.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 16 October 2004 10:55 (twenty-one years ago)

bonus points to anyone who remembers what any of the others sounded like

'Life' was pretty good!

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Saturday, 16 October 2004 12:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Miccio: Are there plans The 40 Most OMGWTFLOL(ROFFLE) Songs Of The 80s or 70s?

not from me! criminy!

Yeah, I think that early 90's Euro-Dance is inherently OMGWTFLOL to many people, and I guess that the fact that many of those songs actually hit it big in the USA might have something to do with that; the very concept of that happening seems so...quaint these days, I guess

yeah it's the novelty value that makes it so amusing now, plus the majority of us were KIDS when we heard this stuff (another reason I don't feel like running some '80s or '70s thing - people who were actually paying attention there for all of it would undoubtedly find something to throw a paranoid bitchfit about -- "WHAT'S SO FUNNY ABOUT THE GAP BAND?!?!?! WHAT?!?!?!").

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 16 October 2004 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Plus I'm tempted to say that every chart hit in the '80s is OMGWTFLOLROFFLE if you know them mainly from the videos.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 16 October 2004 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

people who were actually paying attention there for all of it would undoubtedly find something to throw a paranoid bitchfit about

That's right, youngster. *beats Miccio down*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 16 October 2004 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, it's too bad I couldn't be here on the final day to count down the last eight. Some notes:

1. The two songs in the top eight I predicted that didn't actually make it were both my nominations ("Sunscreen" and "Breakfast at Tiffany's"). I can't believe neither made it, although I think the Baz Luhrman song might have lost a few votes because it's only listed as "Sunscreen"--I can't tell you how many times I skimmed over that song when looking at the nominees because it didn't have that abnormally long title.

2. I'm glad "Are You Jimmy Ray?" made it, though. Now I get to listen to that song for the first time since its ridiculously brief success run in the US in '98.

3. 4 votes for "Poing," "Plantman" and "Television: The Drug of the Nation"! All right!

4. "What's Up" is actually a pretty great song. Listening to it recently my love for it was far more unsarcastic than ever.

5. Yeah, I hate to echo it, but I really don't get the OMGWTFLOL love for "What is Love?" (beyond the SNL skit anyway). Maybe top 40, but #5?

6. Three people voted for "Smells Like Teen Spirit"? Huh?

7. CD-R distribution of this can be ready in about a week. I'll make a thread when it's time.

All in all, great job Anthony. If only the regular poll could be this funny and exciting. We'll see.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Saturday, 16 October 2004 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

All those who doubt the OMGWTFLOL-ness of "What Is Love" MUST see the video -- think Meatloaf's "I Would Do Anything For Love" with 1/50th the budget.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 16 October 2004 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

For anyone interested, this is the ranked top 100. I'm not sure if The Meech and I used the exact same ranking system, but it's close enough.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 16 October 2004 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

#105 or so. Didn't chart anywhere.

I can't believe I was the only one to vote for "My Baby's Daddy"!

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Saturday, 16 October 2004 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I almost did!!

Mike Ouderkirk (Mike Ouderkirk), Sunday, 17 October 2004 01:20 (twenty-one years ago)

"She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy" got robbed.

Mike Ouderkirk (Mike Ouderkirk), Sunday, 17 October 2004 01:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Fuck you. Both of my nominations were not voted for.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Sunday, 17 October 2004 02:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Just so that I don't offend anyone, that "fuck you" was to everybody.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Sunday, 17 October 2004 02:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Early 90s euro-dance is inherently OMGWTFLOL to me, yes. It was then (it was to almost everyone in my peer group. I guess I just saw it as dance music for little kids and funny uncool foreigners).

Haha, I guess I was one of those funny uncool foreigners. Admittedly, after the early nineties, for years I too thought these songs were uncool and silly, and played them for the sake of nostalgia or postmodern irony only. But as years have gone by I've become less and less ironic, and nowadays I simply love many of the early Europop songs. "The Power" and "Rhythm Is a Dancer" are fuckin' brilliant, and so is "Mr. Vain", "Open Sesame", "The Key, the Secret", and dozens of other songs from that era.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 17 October 2004 11:29 (twenty-one years ago)

It didn't occur to anyone to nominate/vote for "Justified and Ancient"?

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Sunday, 17 October 2004 11:31 (twenty-one years ago)

hey, it didn't occur to you either.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 17 October 2004 11:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Another Bad Creation wuz robbed too.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 17 October 2004 11:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I nominated Justified and Ancient for the "real" 90s poll. It didn't make me go OMG, or WTF, or LOL or even ROFFLE, it seemed just par for the course where KLF were concerned.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 17 October 2004 11:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think of it as very OMGWTFLOL(ROFFLE). I like how I now know in my own mind what this means.

One of my nominations (LaTour) did pretty well. The other (Kula Shakar's 'Hey Dude') came nowhere. I'm not even convinced I've ever heard actually heard 'Hey Dude', but the idea of if alone has made it a totemic OMGWTFLOL(ROFFLE) force in my mind.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 17 October 2004 11:42 (twenty-one years ago)

"Tattva" was a little more OMGWTFLOL personally.

The title 'Hey Dude' just cracks me up.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 17 October 2004 11:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Even crackier was "Grateful When You're Dead".

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 17 October 2004 14:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm still kicking myself for not nominating Gerardo's proper hit, Rico Suave. It was just the remembering that he even had another one that made me do the omgwtf thing. Rico Suave was plenty WTF though - I'm such a dumbass.

Kim (Kim), Sunday, 17 October 2004 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I am assuming the poor showing for "The Ballad Of Tom Jones" stems from Americans never having heard it. I mean, OMGWTF etcetc

Tommy - What did I do wrong?
Cerys - Oh you nearly drove me cuckoo
Tommy - Am I really all that bad?
Cerys - You're worse than Hannibal Lector, Charlie Manson, Freddie Kruger
Tommy - Why are we still together?
Cerys - Oh I can't leave you till you're dead
Tommy - You mean "Till death do us part"?
Cerys - I mean like cyanide, strangulation, or an axe through your head
Tommy - It was luscky for us I turned the radio on
Cerys - They say that music soothes the savage beast
Tommy - There was something in that voice that stopped us seeing red
Cerys - The two of us would surely have ended up dead

TOGETHER
You stopped us from killing eachother (Tom Jones, Tom Jones)
You'll never know but you saved our lives (Tom Jones, Tom Jones)
Cerys - I've never thrown my knickers at you!
Tommy - And I don't come from Wales!

Tommy - Still haven't solved our problems
Cerys - You mean we hate eachother's guts
Tommy - Still wanna poison your pizza
Cerys - And I still wanna cut off your nuts
Tommy - I phoned the marriage guidance
Cerys - I tied the phoneline round your neck
Tommy - I'm sick of all this hatred
Cerys - Oh that'll be the arsenic making you sick
Tommy - You were about to drive me over the edge of a cliff
Cerys - As I tried to jump out I knocked the stereo on
Tommy - You changed your mind and then slammed on the brakes
TOGETHER - It was lucky for us we bought his greatest hits

TOGETHER
You stopped us from killing eachother (Tom Jones, Tom Jones)
You'll never know but you saved our lives (Tom Jones, Tom Jones)
Cerys - I've never thrown my knickers at you!
Tommy - And I don't come from Wales!

Tommy - And now our war is over
Cerys - Ive lost the urge to break your neck
Tommy - I owe my life to "What's New Pussy Cat?"
Cerys - Delilah stopped me hating you and wishing you dead
Oh I used to call you satan
Tommy - And you were Cruelle De Ville
Cerys - But now you call me your Delilah
Tommy - And I am not your Lucifer
Cerys - And I am just a pussy cat
Tommy - But just a word of warning now
Cerys - Just in case we ever get tired of his voice
Tommy - I know the mafia, Godzilla, king kong
Cerys - And I know an atom bomb that's going for a song!

TOGETHER
You stopped us from killing eachother (Tom Jones, Tom Jones)
You'll never know but you saved our lives (Tom Jones, Tom Jones)
Cerys - I've never thrown my knickers at you!
Tommy - And I don't come from Wales!

Kim, vent your frustration here: OMGWTFLOL Monday Morning Quarterbacking Thread

(xpost -- I voted for Space and Cerys, was I the only person on the western half of the Atlantic to do so? I have the song from a free Melody Maker CD compilation. Even more WTF would have been Tom Jones and Cerys Matthews -- Baby, It's Cold Outside, no?)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 17 October 2004 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Jordy really surpassed all expectations.

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Monday, 18 October 2004 09:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe in another 10 years. He's still only a teenager.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Monday, 18 October 2004 10:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember in 1993, I was 12 years old and bent on being a sports statistician. Then I saw a video called "Informer". The rest is history.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 18 October 2004 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

It was the first single I ever bought. And along with "Rump Shaker" and Denis Leary's "Asshole", the first music I actively cared about in my life. So starts an obsession...

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 18 October 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

all the house/club tracks... man. id hear those everywhere when i was growing up in italy. infuckingescapable. having them play in my head sends chills up my spine. i hate those songs.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 18 October 2004 13:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Govinda and Mystical Machine Gun surely slay all on this list.

Alba - google the lyrics to Hey Dude. Go on.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 18 October 2004 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

That "Ballad Of Tom Jones" sounds disturbing.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 18 October 2004 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I find it more dorky than disturbing in reality.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 18 October 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Music for Robots just posted a complete set of remixes from the "Informer" cassette single!

Hey everyone, sorry I was so bad about distributing this. I've had more computer troubles than you can count, but most (though disturbingly not all) are done with now. I promise to have them out by the end of January.

However long the delay, though, I guarantee it'll be worth the wait--I spent a weekend listening to the thing all the way through and it is a fucking PHENOMENAL listen.

The lack of Sporty Thievz on this list saddens me greatly.

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 02:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I just read this whole thing for the first time tonight and let me say I have never been so nostalgic for "The Box" before in my short life. Thank you ILM for the roffles.

"Plantman" wuz robbed. How many of the songs on this list were on Beavis & Butt-head, exactly?

daria g (daria g), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 08:14 (twenty-one years ago)

The strangest thing about this poll is that no one seemed to notice that "I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)" is nowhere no be found! Believe it or not, that was a #1 hit in the fall of '93! The album version is twelve minutes long! It has a Beauty and the Beast themed video! It happened sixteen years AFTER Bat Out of Hell!

Thank goodness for youtube -- most of these songs (and videos) are now readily available (compared to two years ago).

This is still the best ILX poll ever. Why wasn't it done with other decades? (Maybe most ILXors are too young to remember the novelty songs of the 80s/70s/60s...)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 5 February 2007 12:11 (nineteen years ago)

You gotta love Anthony's effort to figure out what "Doop" was.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 5 February 2007 12:12 (nineteen years ago)

Your transcription effort was very nice as well (but I don't recognise the tune anymore, unfortunately)

StanM (StanM), Monday, 5 February 2007 12:18 (nineteen years ago)

I forgot how annoying this thread was in itself. It reminds me of students watching one of those Channel Four 'what were we thinking?' threads and giggling.

Tuomas, Monday, 30 November 2009 22:38 (sixteen years ago)

No "Lucas with the Lid Off"?

Yes we should do an 80s version of this. The 80s was chock full of weird hits. "One Night in Bangkok." "Rock Lobster." That one Ronald Reagan song about "outlawing Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes."

A 2000s version, on the other hand, would absolutely SUCK.

Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 15:29 (fifteen years ago)

I still listen to this mix at least once a year (aside from Scatman which I skip past b/c I hear it on the radio all the time)

Fetchboy, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 15:30 (fifteen years ago)

I want to live where you live, if Scatman John is on the radio all the time!

Tuomas, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 16:18 (fifteen years ago)

2000s version would be amazing and would probably include little after 2003.

How do such ubiquitous songs chart so low? Does this ever happen anymore?

billstevejim, Sunday, 1 August 2010 02:38 (fifteen years ago)

Many actually good songs on this list: "Shiny Happy People," "Flagpole Sitta," "The Distance," "Everybody Dance Now," "Tubthumping," "The Power," "Steal My Sunshine."

Guayaquil (eephus!), Sunday, 1 August 2010 03:02 (fifteen years ago)

Admittedly, after the early nineties, for years I too thought these songs were uncool and silly, and played them for the sake of nostalgia or postmodern irony only. But as years have gone by I've become less and less ironic, and nowadays I simply love many of the early Europop songs.
