(that was me running to slsk)

MC Transmaniacon (natepatrin), Friday, 5 November 2004 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

that's like some abstract scooby doo running thing

JaXoN (JasonD), Friday, 5 November 2004 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I was thinking more Warner Brothers (I save Scooby-Doo running for MF Doom leaks)

MC Transmaniacon (natepatrin), Friday, 5 November 2004 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

haha

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 5 November 2004 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

it's good

rentboy (rentboy), Friday, 5 November 2004 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

it's my #2 album of the year (behind big and rich), for whatever that's worth. even better than the favela booty beats album it swipes (parts of?) three songs from (along with the sanford son theme and redd foxx repeatedly saying "you big dummy" in the same track, "walk like an egyptian," "big pimpin," bowie's "let's dance," and i forget what else right now.)

chuck, Friday, 5 November 2004 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

how eclectic!!

2tekz, Friday, 5 November 2004 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it available for purchase or is it a net ting?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 5 November 2004 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Jimmy_tango, Friday, 5 November 2004 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

i heard hollertronix has been going downhill lately...

A. BORRELLI (A. BORRELLI), Friday, 5 November 2004 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

the time i saw them play records was pretty terrible

JaXoN (JasonD), Friday, 5 November 2004 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

this is really great - and it's a fantastic fit for M.I.A.'s stuff. (and I hope she gets heard by as many ppl as possible.)

scott pl. (scott pl.), Friday, 5 November 2004 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I want it.

adam... (nordicskilla), Friday, 5 November 2004 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

superultramega (superultramarinated), Friday, 5 November 2004 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I want.

Bun-B was at the hollertronix party. Wish I couldve gone.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Friday, 5 November 2004 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Friday, 5 November 2004 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Can someone tell me what the music from "Uraqt" is from?

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Friday, 5 November 2004 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

is there anyone on soulseek now who has this? i'll trade for a reacharound.

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 5 November 2004 23:36 (twenty-one years ago)

djdee2005? diplo master? how's this sounding?

youngn (ndeyoung), Friday, 5 November 2004 23:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm diplo master? Yikes.
I haven't actually heard it yet.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Saturday, 6 November 2004 00:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll see Mark's reacharound and raise you a rusty trombone.

Ok, gross, sorry. But I do want this urgently. Should it be popping up in the ILM room soon?

Clusterfuck at the Baja Fresh Salsa Bar (Ben Boyer), Saturday, 6 November 2004 00:05 (twenty-one years ago)

"(along with the sanford son theme and redd foxx repeatedly saying "you big dummy" in the same track"

That's from a Baltimore House track. I have it on a Baltimore mix that must be 3 years old by now. Can't remember who put it out though. I actually played it for you in Philly once, Chuck. Along with Technic's "Doo Dew Dingaling".

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 6 November 2004 00:08 (twenty-one years ago)

naw, i just thought that you would've gotten something from him during that interview (which was nice, by the way)...

sorry about the "master" shit, i feel like i'm subscribing to kung-fu b-movies in some strange retro-wu tang fashion at the moment.

youngn (ndeyoung), Saturday, 6 November 2004 00:16 (twenty-one years ago)

noone?

well, if nothing else, at least i learnt what a rusty trombone is.

mark p (Mark P), Saturday, 6 November 2004 00:27 (twenty-one years ago)

(ben wants this much more than i do, btw)

mark p (Mark P), Saturday, 6 November 2004 00:27 (twenty-one years ago)

mark p (Mark P), Saturday, 6 November 2004 02:38 (twenty-one years ago)

You got it, Mark? Are you on slsk? I promise I won't even mention the Rusty Trombone again if I can snatch it...

Nostalgia for the Old Cineramadome (Ben Boyer), Saturday, 6 November 2004 02:40 (twenty-one years ago)

so yeah it's pretty much the best thing i've heard this year

stomp (+dancefloor), Saturday, 6 November 2004 02:46 (twenty-one years ago)

stomp (+dancefloor), Saturday, 6 November 2004 03:00 (twenty-one years ago)

ben what's your username?

mark p (Mark P), Saturday, 6 November 2004 03:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm eagerly awaiting to hear this as well. anyone got a queue that's not too large for comfort?

lemin (lemin), Saturday, 6 November 2004 04:21 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm aquariushaha. msg me.

mark p (Mark P), Saturday, 6 November 2004 04:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I have heard the first four tracks and am now frantically scrambling to figure out which album in my top ten to sacrifice so I can make room for it.

MC Transmaniacon (natepatrin), Saturday, 6 November 2004 05:34 (twenty-one years ago)

it is terrific! a real unexpected gift

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 6 November 2004 06:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm in the ILM room now.
Who's feeling tingly and wants to pass it along?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 6 November 2004 06:47 (twenty-one years ago)

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Saturday, 6 November 2004 08:49 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah so 4 or 5 people here have it now. search the ilm room on soulseek, that'll probably yield results. my queue is huge so don't message or d/l it from me right now.

http://s12.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=131F9611EFCD750A1FBD43A360A5F2E2
when you get it, share it on slsk, and post your username here... don't be a dick. the link will only work for an hour or two probably.

i had to unshare it because i had so many people trying to get it, slsk gave me a runtime error.

stomp (+dancefloor), Saturday, 6 November 2004 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm aquariushaha. msg me.

-- mark p

ha, i never knew this. makes a lot of sense.

It'll be ready in about 15 minutes (have to restart slsk), but I'll have it under username "hipsterdetritus"; folder shared/mixes.

MC Transmaniacon (natepatrin), Saturday, 6 November 2004 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

no fun with the mp3's. you need a one track version of this with no GAPS.

cutty (mcutt), Saturday, 6 November 2004 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)

i burned it in nero and turned gaps off and it plays perfectly...

stomp (+dancefloor), Saturday, 6 November 2004 19:02 (twenty-one years ago)

arjun (arjun), Saturday, 6 November 2004 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I could give a shit about gaps.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Saturday, 6 November 2004 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

OK I'm listening to this and its really good but what's everyone going apeshit about? Its almost exactly what I would have predicted it sound like. I was hoping to be shocked I guess.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Saturday, 6 November 2004 21:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Who's the other vocalist on "Sun Shawa"? It isn't the girl on Lucien-n-Luciano's "La Ondita", is it?

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Saturday, 6 November 2004 23:56 (twenty-one years ago)

M.I.A over 'Big Pimpin' is pretty fucking awesome.

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Sunday, 7 November 2004 10:02 (twenty-one years ago)

It'll be on robotn1k in about 10 minutes, if anyone's still needing it.

MattR (MattR), Sunday, 7 November 2004 10:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Does anyone know what the deal is with this anyway - MIA mentioned in an interview recently that she'd done a mixtape with Hollertronix that might be out on XL, I presume this is it?

MattR (MattR), Sunday, 7 November 2004 11:16 (twenty-one years ago)

:(

this sounds great.

cºzen (Cozen), Sunday, 7 November 2004 11:47 (twenty-one years ago)

cºzen (Cozen), Sunday, 7 November 2004 11:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Monday, 8 November 2004 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Alba (Alba), Monday, 8 November 2004 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

scott pl. (scott pl.), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Where is "Hombre" though? That might be my favorite MIA track.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

goddamn the beat on Walk Like an Egyptian is insane - I NEVER put much stock in that song but suddenly it's pure genius.

Josh Love (screamapillar), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

w0~3 this is so great. does anyone know what's up with that clipse track, who's on production? i luh it. the whole tape is a real headturner.

nebbesh (nebbesh), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 00:34 (twenty-one years ago)

i assumed neptunes for 'definition of a roller' and turntable lab confirmed it for me. that song kills.

i yelped out "OOOOOOOOOH" when the keys from "What Happened To That Boy" came in for the Galang remix with Lil' Vicious.

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 01:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I so want this now.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 01:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd heard that "Definition of a Roller" was done by Dame Grease - although yeah I initially assumed it was the Neptunes as well.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 01:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm kind of amazed that so many people seem to have downloaded the whole thing so quickly.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 01:47 (twenty-one years ago)

ashlee simpson to thread

things done changed.

does anyone know a place with actual copies of this? i want a real copy.

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 02:00 (twenty-one years ago)

TURN. TABLE. LAB.

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 02:02 (twenty-one years ago)

1. They are sold out.
2. "actual copies" are so 90s.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 02:05 (twenty-one years ago)

The RIAA is after me.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 02:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Turntable Lab don't even have a mention of it anymore.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 02:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I finally get hold of the 12" of 'Galang' and now this happens. I hate records.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 02:14 (twenty-one years ago)

it's on the cds page.
http://www.turntablelab.com/cds/cds1.html

turntable is notorious for being impossible to find stuff. THEY NEED A FUCKING SEARCH ENGINE OR ALPHEBETICAL LISTING

JaXoN (JasonD), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 02:51 (twenty-one years ago)

The shipping came to $7 when I ordered it from them!!! Fucking gyp.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 02:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the shipping starts at $7 on all their orders. That's why I usually pool orders with a friend... but they always screw up and short us an album if we order two of anything. That said, I keep ordering because you just can't find some of this stuff anywhere else.

mike h. (mike h.), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 04:20 (twenty-one years ago)

07 M.I.A. ‘Amazon’ (XL) & Ciara ‘Goodies (Diplo Remix)’ (Sho’ Nuff Records)

This is the best song on the planet right now.

john'n'chicago, Wednesday, 10 November 2004 04:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah - cool. I don't know how I missed that yesterday. I thought I did a 'Find' on that page.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 09:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I will burn you a copy, if you like.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 09:23 (twenty-one years ago)

No, I'm worried about this terrorism thing.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 09:30 (twenty-one years ago)

MIA is playing Club Suicide in Manchester on 26th Nov, they've got a few copies of this to hand out to early arrivers.

Affectian (Affectian), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

This is the best song on the planet right now.

I am increasingly tired of hearing Goodies. Its a great song, just heard it SO much.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I *knew* the end of Galang was influenced by Walk Like An Egyptian and people laughed at me and now I am VINDICATED!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Mondo Kim's in New York City had copies of this, as of yesterday.

It is HOT.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll try to make this available via the usual methods some time tonight.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

cºzen (Cozen), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Funnily enough, I'm burning for you right now, though perhaps not in the way you want.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

this guy is burning for you

http://www.yzedf.com/pics/random/burning-monk.jpg

JaXoN (JasonD), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 23:09 (twenty-one years ago)

does anyone know where else this shit is available? I was gonna order it off turntable yesterday but forgot and now it says they're restocking! gah. helpppppp.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Mine should be arriving from turntablelab today, according to FedEx's order tracker. I'm paying one and a half more times for shipping as I am for the CD itself. I would have settled for regular airmail but that didn't seem to be an option. Still - hurrah for the weak dollar!

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

RUB IT IN WHY DON'T YOU

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

seriously I hanker after this work and can't believe I didn't pick up on it earlier. NEED MIA.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Does anyone know of any free or shareware CD burning software that will burn MP3s to a regular audio CD format without any gaps in between? I can't figure out how to do it with my Plextor software, and the gaps really kill the flow.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

You could go to that Manchester MIA thing mentioned above and get a free copy, Alex!

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Has anyone linked to Sasha Frere-Jones's profile on MIA in the New Yorker this week:

http://www.newyorker.com/critics/music/?041122crmu_music

I was pretty psyched when I was leafing through the new ish last night and came across a full-page photo of MIA. I actually didn't know she was hott.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Alba, I want this thing so much that I contemplated doing just that. London to Manchester is un peu expensive though.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

You should see the 'Galang' video, o.nate. It's a hoot. It was on the web somewhere.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

she may be hot but she's the worst dancer ever. tell me, brits, do you know how to dance with any hint of sexuality at all????

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh I do.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I am very aware of MIA's crap dancing. That's why I love the video so. My dancing is sex.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

i think there should be a thread on crap british dancing. and also why brits fuck like prostitutes -- no kissing, pls!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know who you've been fucking.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

well british prostitutes BUT STILL!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

This is what I said to Lauren, who couldn't view the video on her computer, when she sent me the link:

> The video involves her, in a wide selection of
> outfits seemingly plucked
> from 1987, dancing rather badly against some nice
> backdrops. It's all
> very colourful and initially made me think of a Five
> Star video.
>
> I think her legs are too thin and bandy for some of
> the moves she tries
> to pull, and it has made me reevaluate my own
> dancing technique.

I stand by my review.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Perhaps this is the dance SFJ was referring to in this sentence:

"She began to knock her knees together in a bowlegged dance borrowed from Elvis Presley and the Jamaican singer Sean Paul."

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

If that's not sex I don't know what is.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

(N.B. I don't know what is)

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm listening to this now. It's great. I got a free DJ Haul & Mason mix CD sent with it too, and a little magazine called Frank. I like these people.

The CD itself says 'Piracy Fun Terrorism', which I like.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

i went to turntable lab to order the CD and ended up spending like $100. i rarely go there and saw some really cool shit, like the Kozyadan CD-Rs and some new Technic headphones. they have great freebies, like Vice and Frank. holla. does the cd come in a regular jewel case or a skinny CD-R one?

also, every time i read something by sasha, i retire from writing for at least an hour. wow.

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

her dancing is hardly beyonce-level unfortunate either.

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

am I the only person who thought the "blaze to blaze" line in (as Sasha quotes it) "“Blaze to blaze, galang a lang alanga / Purple haze, galang a lang a langlang" was RAZOR BLADES? I am going to continue believing she is saying "razor blades," though -- it's a much better line. (And yeah, the video is totally immortal, partly because she dances so bad, but her legs are SCARILY thin. Somebody needs to do an intervention and force her to eat some food and get some meat on those bones before it's too late.)

chuck, Wednesday, 17 November 2004 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd put my meat on those bones wakka wakka

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

hahaha... also, why does everyone (including Sasha F-J) keep saying she was born in Sri Lanka? the very first thing in her bio on www.miauk.com says she was born in London.

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

But "blaze to blaze" makes more sense, assuming "purple haze" is a pot reference.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I assumed it was a Hendrix reference, but hey, what do I know...I thought the song was about a knife fight or something: "too late you dooooooowwwwwwwn." Like she sliced some rival with her razor blades!

chuck, Wednesday, 17 November 2004 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

"hahaha... also, why does everyone (including Sasha F-J) keep saying she was born in Sri Lanka? the very first thing in her bio on www.miauk.com says she was born in London."

Because she DID live in Sri Lanka (mostly) from age 6 months to 9 years and her history is damn confusing!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not necessarily up on the latest reefer slang, but a quick Google search on "blaze purple haze" turns up a lot of hip-hop lyrics. E.g.:

"I blaze the Purple Haze, sit in a daze"

"Whoa, we can blaze the haze"

"See I got that purple haze (purple haze)
And it's time for us to blaze"

Although I will admit the knife fight imagery is more colorful.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I still sing 'razor blades' as I walk around singing this song like a fool even though I now know what the real lyrics are (and I agree with o. nate on why 'blaze to blaze' makes more sense in context).

W i l l (common_person), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 21:14 (twenty-one years ago)

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah - who's releasing the lp stateside? i could imagine this charting under the right circumstances ('vaguely dancehall' is a very effective backdoor to radio right now). was 'galang' a big hit in the uk?

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

and i think it's cool how her limbs flail around! and the weird shapeless t-shirts and jackets add to the down-home appeal. i'd way rather see dancing like this than those severely choregraphed, frighteningly athletic aerobics workouts that pass for videos these days

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Who even knows?!? XL has pushed the british release back already a couple of time haven't they? I could total see "Galang" being some weird exotic pop hit, but it probably won't be.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

geeta, OTM

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 21:58 (twenty-one years ago)

her site shows her practicing dancing for the video

i was thinking it could maybe be as big a hit as pitbull's "coolo" but then i remembered lil jon tiein probably helped that alot. doing remotely as well as nina sky is probably very unlikely though.

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Do Missy videos qualify as "severely choreagraphed, frightening athletic aerobics workouts"? Cuz those dance routines are fantastic.

coz she's actually talented.

Have I wandered into the NME letters page?

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 18 November 2004 11:01 (twenty-one years ago)

The problem, as I see it, with stelfox's argument is that

a) all this career advancement talk doesn't seem to tally with 'Galang' flopping again.

b) Lady Sovereign got to hang out with Mike Skinner, who is a somewhat bigger noise these days than... Justine Frischmann.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 18 November 2004 11:09 (twenty-one years ago)

W i l l (common_person), Thursday, 18 November 2004 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Just a quick note on the tracklisting...

10 Dead Prez ‘Hip Hop’ (Columbia)
11 M.I.A. ‘You’re Good (Diplo Remix)’ (XL)
12 M.I.A. ‘Pop’ (XL) & ‘Aloo Aloo Rhythm’

I'm pretty sure the copy I have actually has 'You're Good' and 'Pop' before the track which is M.I.A. over the 'Hip Hop' beat.

More importantly, does anyone know which M.I.A. track (if it is a pre-existing one) is spliced with 'Hip Hop'? The lyrics go something like "you can be a follower, but who's your leader?"

Flyboy (Flyboy), Sunday, 21 November 2004 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

There are only three released MIA tracks, as far as I know: 'Galang', 'Sunshowers' and 'Fire Fire'.

She's only getting press because old white music editors are going, 'Oh look, isn't she exotic looking? Let's put her in the magazine.'

What press? I've seen a handful of pieces on her ever, and nothing at all about the release of this fantastic work. I've got it now, and ohmygod it's wonderful. We haven't mentioned how great the "Sunshowers" plus "Push It" combo is? It's very great. I looove MIA's voice.

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 21 November 2004 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't even like her as much as most ("Galang" wasn't even in the top 20 i submitted to stylus) but charges of exoticism are highly suspect. I mean, she makes good music, and she fits in to the musical worldview of both your hipster i.e. musically idiosyncratic, far from bubblegum, etc. plus she fits into the worldview of people interested in musical progressiveness, (and I mean that in the populist sense) by incorporating influences of different kinds of music that are in vogue right now - dancehall, electroclash etc. It is very much in the center of your venn diagram of music fans.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Sunday, 21 November 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Or I should say - music press

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Sunday, 21 November 2004 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

djdee - I'd actually add that she appeals (or could appeal) to the pop kids too because her songs are incredibly catchy, and because even on this mixtape she drops samples of Madonna, The Bangles, Prince and Salt'n'Pepa.

And she does all of this without ever quite sounding like anything anyone else is doing.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Monday, 29 November 2004 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah rollie nice work!!

Sanjay McDougal (jaymc), Monday, 29 November 2004 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

the end part was hard to sync, i'll take a look tonight.

i have nothing to do but remix until finals in like two weeks, so if you got any acapellas, i'm down

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Monday, 29 November 2004 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

that diplo radio thing is very hot.

g--ff (gcannon), Monday, 29 November 2004 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

holy fuck, that m.i.a joint with the night rider-esque synth is the big ticket. very serious.

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 00:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait, seriously, what the fuck is up with the $7.50 shipping at Turntable Lab? That's like some Ticketmaster shit. Does any other place have this?

Chuckling at the Tomkat's Marquee (Ben Boyer), Thursday, 2 December 2004 00:25 (twenty-one years ago)

oh snap he drops some UKG in the set.

It's Jammer's "Destruction" w/ Wiley, D Double, Kano and Doogz (whose verse gets cut off!). Good choice, though.

adam... (nordicskilla), Thursday, 2 December 2004 03:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, and "Grimey" and "Ps and Qs"! This is great!!

adam... (nordicskilla), Thursday, 2 December 2004 03:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, so he crams almost every half-decent grime tune released this year into this mix. Drop in some Ruff Sqwad for your next trick!

adam... (nordicskilla), Thursday, 2 December 2004 03:55 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
what?

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 8 January 2005 09:02 (twenty-one years ago)

so it's a mcsleazy thing?

AMAZON is lush. if i can get away with using such a word.

how many of these trax are due 2 b on the lp proper do we know?

piscesboy, Saturday, 8 January 2005 11:34 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm late to the party, but I'd like to say i like fruity pebbles in an MIA way.
It took three listens but now I'm completely hooked. Incredible.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 8 January 2005 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, i actually just heard this last night. i must say i'm quite impressed. diplo's shit is just fantastic. and, god, how 2005 will be MIA's!!!

rob mackey (mackey), Saturday, 8 January 2005 22:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I was only lukewarm on this mix album, thought 'galang' was okay, thought 'sunshowers' was fine, figured it just wasn't my thing.

Then I heard the studio version of 'push up the people' and I have completely flipped out, that is a fantastic song.

(Jon L), Sunday, 9 January 2005 12:02 (twenty-one years ago)

i hadn't bothered getting this mix because i'm on 56k but this weekend i had nothing better to do but sit around for a day and download so i did. And it was well worth it.

that china girl mix is so hot

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Sunday, 9 January 2005 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

slightly unrelated but does anyone have a tracklist for the Diplo mix just up the thread? (not piracy funds terrorism.. but the montreal mix)

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Sunday, 9 January 2005 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Wednesday, February 2

my god - worth the trip to toronto!

jed_ (jed), Friday, 14 January 2005 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

they're in nyc on the 5th

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Friday, 14 January 2005 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

jonviachicago, Friday, 14 January 2005 16:14 (twenty-one years ago)

my god - worth the trip to toronto!

ilm people* are welcome to crash at mine!

* this offer only applies if you are, in fact, MIA

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 14 January 2005 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I've had this sitting on my hard drive for two months and have only JUST got round to listening to it. I think I fucked up by not putting it in my albums of the year list. At #1.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 16 January 2005 01:29 (twenty-one years ago)

finally heard/got it last week. it's really good but I don't know if I'd put it in my top ten were I able to--top 15 probably, though.

as to the idea that people like her because she's hot or whatever, I fell for the song knowing jack shit about who made it or what--I thought M.I.A. was a group originally.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Sunday, 16 January 2005 11:03 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, i know!! i didn't know what she looked like until like a year after i first fell for "galang"!

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 16 January 2005 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

three weeks pass...
Not to be overtly ignorant, but is it pronounced Die-plo, Dee-plo or Dip-lo? And since I only have about half the tracks on my hard drive through Shareaza, where is the easiest place to grab this entire disc?

Mr Deeds (Mr Deeds), Thursday, 10 February 2005 04:10 (twenty-one years ago)

dip low

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 10 February 2005 04:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Is there a volume 2 implicit in that title?

dan. (dan.), Thursday, 10 February 2005 04:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Liking this a lot. It's on "Lady Killer" now, that's Kraftwerk right? About time someone sampled their sexy sex (or bicycling yeah) noises

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 10 February 2005 04:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Geez not one mention of how good "Bingo" is? "Bingo, now I'm hitting a six"! More cricket songs please

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 10 February 2005 04:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm, like, kinda happy how much better this still is than Arular.

W i l l (common_person), Thursday, 10 February 2005 04:52 (twenty-one years ago)

that's insanity!

heywood jablomi (heywood), Thursday, 10 February 2005 08:29 (twenty-one years ago)

in fact, a few days after i finally got a non-compressed copy of Arular, i promptly deleted my files of PFT because it just...doesn't...compare. why would i want to hear maya rap over "push it" when i can hear the funkiest syncopated beats & basslines instead?

heywood jablomi (heywood), Thursday, 10 February 2005 08:32 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah arular is much much better i think. The novelty of this wears off fast for me.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Thursday, 10 February 2005 08:33 (twenty-one years ago)

My girlfriend prefers PFT > Arular. She's having trouble transitioning from American hiphop beats to crazy electro dancehall grime whatever--me, I freak out a little bit just sitting at my desk thinking about "Bingo" or "10 Dollar."

adam (adam), Thursday, 10 February 2005 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Geez not one mention of how good "Bingo" is?

do you know what he's on? do you know what he's on? do you know how this beat is made in fuckin' Lon-da-da-don?

God that song is good.

both PFT and Arular are great, I don't think either is head and shoulders above the other. Personally I think "Sunshowers" actually works much better with the "Push It" beat. wasn't there going to be a PFT Vol 2 at some point?

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 10 February 2005 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I was a bit disappointed that Lady Killer didn't make Arular in any form, that's my favourite on PFT.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 10 February 2005 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm with ya Matt DC

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Thursday, 10 February 2005 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

can i come too?

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 10 February 2005 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought the lyrics of bingo went "Now I'm hitting the sex" for the longest time, I still kinda hope they do.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 10 February 2005 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Bingo is my favourite I think actually. That and sunshowers. I'm twee, yaknow?

Where's the beat on track 7 from?

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 10 February 2005 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

it's Hombre and Pull Up the People for me all the way. followed closely by Bingo & Amazon.

heywood jablomi (heywood), Thursday, 10 February 2005 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought the line in Bingo was "hitting the states," ie she is infiltrating church bingo tournaments across the midwestern US of A.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 10 February 2005 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

every time I listen to Bingo I hear one of the three explanations given so far. I think I like 'hitting a six' best. Favourites - 10 Dollar, Pull Up The People, URAQT.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 10 February 2005 20:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Its weird Amazon and Hombre I heard virtually nothing about (compared to say Bingo or Galang or whatever) but they remain my personal favorites on the disc.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Thursday, 10 February 2005 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
turntablelab has this and arular in stock...

john'n'chicago, Monday, 21 March 2005 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

eleven months pass...
has this been re-released ?

just found a 'proper' copy in Fopp .. or have i just helped out the bootleggers ?

note the actual cd print says : 'piracy fun terrorism'

hmm ..

mark e (mark e), Friday, 24 February 2006 14:39 (twenty years ago)

haha!

this ruined the real album for me. "bingo" with "big pimpin'" beat > most things, including normal "bingo".

destroye's noobies (haitch), Friday, 24 February 2006 15:16 (twenty years ago)

ok. run through number 2 .. far more fun than the album, which i will dig out again now i'm in the mood.

mark e (mark e), Friday, 24 February 2006 15:45 (twenty years ago)

omg i started this thread?!

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 24 February 2006 16:19 (twenty years ago)

hahahaha s1ocki

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 24 February 2006 16:21 (twenty years ago)

So is volume 2 stillborn or are there still plans to realize it (something)?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 24 February 2006 16:24 (twenty years ago)

ten years pass...

lol, i saw this on vinyl in a record store last week. https://www.discogs.com/MIA-Piracy-Funds-Terrorism-Volume-1/release/8416768
