Rumour has it Johnny Rotten really is a Floyd fan. The "I Hate Pink Floyd" T-Shirt was a publicity stunt. Anybody know more about this?

If you restricted it to Barrett era Floyd, I suppose you could make some kind of case, but I still wouldn't be having it. Far less all this late Floyd revisionism. Dreary, dreary stuff.

(But... even worse, I sometimes wonder if Gilmour's Floyd may not have been so bad. "Learning to Fly" is really catchy and it's not so tediously miserable.)

I should probably give Barrett another chance sometime. Piper sounded like a joke except for "Interstellar Overdrive" when I heard it some 5 years ago. I like Voivod's cover of "Astronomy Domine".

The Pistols hardly had any records! Great band in theory; in practice, don't listen to them.
Floyd are great until (and including) Animals.
It's always the best bands in a genre that get attacked. If Johnny Rotten had worn an "I hate Colosseum" T-shirt it would have looked daft.

The dreariness is part of the appeal. Animals, Darkside, Atom Heart Mother, Piper, Meddle, Wish You Were Here, Ummagumma = all classic. The Wall is just too damn long.
― Ian John50n (orion), Saturday, 6 November 2004 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)
I actually quite dig the Wall despite its inarguable pretention.
Johnny may have indeed hated Pink Floyd, but when I saw PiL at the Palladium on the tour for Album, the first song the band played (without John onstage) was "Kasmir" by Led Zeppelin.
― Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 6 November 2004 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)
But that was the PiL album that provoked (dumb) reviewer lines like, "Led Zeppelin is cool again." By that point the cat was out the bag.
― Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Saturday, 6 November 2004 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)
I've heard this too, I'm fairly sure that it's true.
Saying he loves PF sounds like part 2 of the publicity stunt.
I love the Pistols but I loved PF longer as an adolescent (Barrett through Wish You Were Here period, I was tired of them by the time The Wall came out), so I gotta say PF.
― nickn (nickn), Saturday, 6 November 2004 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

― mark grout (mark grout), Saturday, 6 November 2004 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)
But there were countless fucked-up, confused, pissed-off post-grunge mid '90s teenage whiteboys at my high school thought The Wall was a masterwork. Including, at one point that only ended shortly before I turned twenty, me.
Face it, the only 1977 pop culture event that Changed Everything Forever for my generation was Star Wars.

Yeah, and so was Chuck Berry, but I'd still rather listen to The Seeds or something. Maybe that's even a misleading comparison. I guess the point I'm trying to make is that landmark != good. I don't doubt the INFLUENCE of the Pistols was massive (it's pretty obvious), but if going strictly by which band I enjoy listening to more, it's gotta be Floyd.
― Ian John50n (orion), Sunday, 7 November 2004 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)
He wasn't a Floyd fan as far as I'm aware - he was into Hawkwind as a lad. Also, because he liked some Peter Hammill, people assume that he liked Van der Graaf too but the two don't necessarily follow.

― Soukesian, Sunday, 7 November 2004 23:17 (twenty-one years ago)
Rumour is talking out of it's arse. John was wearing that T-shirt before he was in the 'Pistols and before anyone was paying the slightest attention to him.
On the other hand the fact that Malcolm McLaren subsequently attempted to lay claim to the fruits of John's attitude and inventiveness and to use this to gain publicity however, is beyond question and par for the course.
― Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 8 November 2004 10:04 (twenty-one years ago)
That goes pretty much for me too - although I'd have to add that I'd already dismissed 'Floyd as boring and tedious before punk came along (in truth it was probably just too mature for me at aged 12-13 - I far preferred David Bowie and Gary Glitter and Roxy Music and Slade and Sweet and Thin Lizzy and T-Rex; although I had actually prog-ressed as far as Yes).
In fact, contrary to all the sterotypes, punk was very rapidly responsible for opening my eyes to the joys of Syd-era 'Floyd - the single of "See Emily Play" was regularly played on the juke-box at the Reading punk's pub, The Star; and I particularly remember that Sprogg, the bass player of our local punk heroes The K9's, was a huge fan of Syd's solo stuff and actually made a tape of The Madcap Laughs and Barrett for me back in '78 IIRC. (Fwiw Sprogg was also responible for introducing me to Steely Dan!).
So I'm inclined to say: Sex Pistols without Sid > Pink Floyd with Syd > Sex Pistols with Sid > Pink Floyd without Syd.

Normally, I'd say there can be no such thing as too many aggressive songs, but Geir's largely correct in that "aggressive" songs are not what the `Floyd generally excell at.
