I was going to kick off with David Bowie and Bing Crosby, but the more I think about it, the more likely that collaboration seems. So:

1. Neil Young and Devo

2. Tom Waits and Bette Midler

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 8 November 2004 11:17 (twenty-one years ago)

(btw, ageing, out-of-the-loop rock/country/pop/variety star seeking cred with younger, hip performer of whatever ilk falls into the "extremely likely" category.)

I'm always quite perplexed by the Kristofferson\Streisand record I see in so many charity shops. Not perplexed enough to buy it though, however much I like Kristofferson. Dunno how unlikely people feel that was though.

Someone on ILM mentioned it. Okay, this is not the most reliable source, but it didn't feel like whoever said it was lying. Also, the original news about the Hassle da Hoff album wasn't so convinving either, if I remember correctly the source of the whole rumour was just one website.

Not too unlikely... I'd say Costello-Macca raised more eyebrows in its time.

Another not-too-unlikely-if-you-think-about-it entry:

56. Tori Amos & Trent Reznor ("Past the Mission").

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Monday, 8 November 2004 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Tori Amos & Maynard James Keenan's duet on her "Mohammed My Friend" doesn't seem that out of place to me, but to some other people I've played it for, it's definitely a WTFer.

58. macca and jacko

nevermind that they're now both considered the "old guard" of pop... at the time, jacko was just a coupla records past being a member of the 5 and was just setting out as his own soul sensation. macca was on the decline - in his ex-beatles, ex-wings "low-point of the career" phase. not to mention the bizarre video

95. nirvana and the meat puppets. i mean, yeah, nirvana were somewhere deep within nirvana's roots, and they both came from the amerindie underground, but really, when you think about it, it makes no sense whatsoever. it makes no sense right down to the point of cobain singing meat puppets songs that were entirely out of his vocal range.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 00:33 (twenty-one years ago)

What doesn't make sense about it?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 00:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, those Meat Puppet songs were out of Curt Kirkwood's vocal range, too.

Don't get me wrong though - Meat Puppets II is awesome.

darin (darin), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 01:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, vocal range or not, it's not like the Meat Puppets and Nirvana are all that different from each other --- genre/demographic wise.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 01:05 (twenty-one years ago)

the thrash- and noise- and bubblegum- and metal-inspired rock band picks one fellow veteran of the indie rock scene to get up on one of the world's biggest stages with them, and they choose ... a psychedelic bluegrass folk thingy band. a band they have nothing whatsoever in common with, musically speaking (well, ok, i can see nirvana maybe playing "split myself in two," or something off the first meat puppets album, but that was already a decade old at that point, and that's not the kind of songs they chose to collaborate on). i just thought it was weird all around. fun and interesting, but also strange and unlikely.

The Ani DiFranco and Jackie Chan collab is awe-inspiring. I have it on a collection called "When Pigs Fly: Songs You Never Thought You'd Hear."

135. Purportedly: Ozzy Osbourne and Albert Hammond on the Magic Lanterns' "One Night Stand." Don't know if this is true, though.

149. Beach Boys and Fat Boys

Hang on a second, I'll put it online.

The mother of all unlikely collaborations is obviously The Spawn soundtrack, even though that was the whole point of it. Still, check out the track list...

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 23:14 (twenty-one years ago)

153. Conny Plank producing the Scorpions

Well, they are all Germans. I didn't know this, though. What album did he produce? And why wasn't it thoroughly rocktastic?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 00:18 (twenty-one years ago)

the first one, 1972's 'lonesome crow'. haven't heard it, but would like to someday, early Scorpions are often described as spacier.

Wow. Must seek that out.

"Tom Jones and Dusty Springfield singing "Upside Down" on what I have to assume is a period variety show"

That's all very well, but what I want to know is: which "Upside Down"?

The Jesus & Mary Chain one, the Magazine one or the Diana Ross one?!?

The strangest thing is that there was a second Texas/Wu-Tang teamup a few years ago

Others that come to mind:
Brian Wilson appearing on that one song on Richard Ashcroft's second album
Kate Bush uniting Prince and Lenny Henry on the same song (though they weren't in the studio at the same time)
Dagmar Krause doing backing vocals for Paul Young
