As far as I can tell:

a/ 8 are shit
b/ 11 aren't shit, but absolutely don't belong on the list
c/ 31 I haven't heard at all
d/ 17 I have heard, but not enough to pass judgement
e/ I'm more interested in checking out 15 or so because of this list

peepee (peepee), Friday, 12 November 2004 02:27 (twenty years ago)

I have absolutely no problems with the list.

Mr. Snrub, Friday, 12 November 2004 02:28 (twenty years ago)

peepee, those questions are totally racist and you know it.

Shmool McShmool (shmuel), Friday, 12 November 2004 02:34 (twenty years ago)

I'm caught.

peepee (peepee), Friday, 12 November 2004 02:36 (twenty years ago)

First time I've seen the list -- the top ten alone is killer!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 12 November 2004 02:37 (twenty years ago)

b - 12 aren't shit, but absolutely don't belong on the list
c - 21 I haven't heard at all

john'n'chicago, Friday, 12 November 2004 02:38 (twenty years ago)

Bush doesn't belong in the White House, either.
but see, there's this thing called voting...

Hi, I am a genius. a big one. (AaronHz), Friday, 12 November 2004 02:40 (twenty years ago)

nononononononononononono!
I'm just curious about your personal opinion about the list,
that's all.
I've got no problem understanding that y'all voted for these, even the ones that I don't like.
(hell, my personal top two obviously would be in
categories A, B or C for most of you)

peepee (peepee), Friday, 12 November 2004 02:45 (twenty years ago)

i think it lacks snoop dogg

astroblaster (astroblaster), Friday, 12 November 2004 02:54 (twenty years ago)

I think it's a pretty good list, but I'm really surprised that there's no U2 on it whatsoever. Where is the U2 love? Those are like some of the biggest singles of the 90s.

mrjosh (mrjosh), Friday, 12 November 2004 02:56 (twenty years ago)

I also think it says something (not a bad something, but something) about the ILM definition of 'pop.' Like, where is "Everybody Hurts?" But it's still pretty awesome and I want to collect all these songs together and listen to them on shuffle immediately.

mrjosh (mrjosh), Friday, 12 November 2004 02:58 (twenty years ago)

I wouldn't say any are "shit," but that's a term I use very sparingly. There's definitely more than a few that don't really float my boat, but whatever. By that same token, I wouldn't say any "don't belong on the list."

By my count, I haven't heard exactly half the list (although there's maybe a few I'd know if you played them for me). I'm interested in checking out nearly everything I haven't heard, although probably most excited about the hip-hop that I missed in the 90s (Biggie, Wu-Tang, etc.). And Aaliyah. And probably St. Etienne, to see what the fuss is all about.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 12 November 2004 03:02 (twenty years ago)

You've never heard any St. Etienne? Wow, I would have thought that'd be right up your alley.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 12 November 2004 03:04 (twenty years ago)

By shit I mean if I was driving around, listening to the radio, I'd definitely turn it off or to something else.
(In the more extreme cases, it would mean "annoying")

peepee (peepee), Friday, 12 November 2004 03:08 (twenty years ago)

I haven't heard any St.Etienne stuff either.

peepee (peepee), Friday, 12 November 2004 03:08 (twenty years ago)

I started to list the ones I have never heard (or don't recognize by name), but then I realized that list was sizeable. There are just a few I have never, ever heard of (091.- ISOLEE - "Beau Mot Plage"?)

And, I too am mostly Etiennignorant. I have only ever heard one St. Etienne song on a mix someone gave me - "Like the Motorway" I think. Very pretty song.

Nostalgia for the Old Cineramadome (Ben Boyer), Friday, 12 November 2004 03:25 (twenty years ago)

The only track I hadn't heard from the top ten was the Warren G. I made a big mistake to do so, given that it gave me the irresistible urge to finish my medical career ASAP and proceed to lobotomize anyone who voted for it.

Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Friday, 12 November 2004 03:25 (twenty years ago)

...so I take it that you think its "shit"

peepee (peepee), Friday, 12 November 2004 03:29 (twenty years ago)

there's a lot of b's, but I like the list. It makes me happy both as a Belle and a Sebastian fan and as a Dr. Dre fan.

Shmool McShmool (shmuel), Friday, 12 November 2004 03:35 (twenty years ago)

Ned -- yeah, it seems like I would like St. Etienne, right? I heard "Filthy" way back in '95 when it was on a trip-hop compilation, and a friend played me a few songs of theirs a year or so ago. I just never really knew they were that well-regarded and worth seeking out, although I did like what I heard.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 12 November 2004 03:38 (twenty years ago)

Isolee is the only one I have not heard of at all either. Fill me in.

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Friday, 12 November 2004 03:41 (twenty years ago)

Also, I really like the list because everything seems so unexpected and/or out of place. It looks more like an individual's list than a consensus. I mean, where else would Pulp, Dee-Lite, the Breeders, My Bloody Valentine, and the freakin' Geto Boys all make the top 5 in a '90s single poll?

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Friday, 12 November 2004 03:43 (twenty years ago)

"Hypnotize" needs to be way higher

(2002 Nate recoils in horror; 2004 Nate laughs at him)

MC Transmaniacon (natepatrin), Friday, 12 November 2004 03:53 (twenty years ago)

a/ 2 are shit
b/ 9 aren't shit, but absolutely don't belong on the list
c/ 6 you haven't heard at all
d/ 3 have heard, but not enough to pass judgement
e/ 12 you are more interested in checking out because of this list

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 12 November 2004 03:57 (twenty years ago)

I can't really answer, perhaps I could

IF YOU COULD COUNT BACKWARDS FROM 100 WITHOUT FUCKING IT UP.

Sasha (sgh), Friday, 12 November 2004 04:15 (twenty years ago)

I'm mystified by the Geto Boys placing. The track's just not very good. I like the sample, but 2nd II None did more with it on "If You Want It". Was there some vote bloc that lobbied to place it so high? I mean, for 90s gangsta rap there's about 100 better tracks!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 12 November 2004 04:39 (twenty years ago)

a) 2 are shit

c) way too many, at least 30

e) i will get all of them from slsk soon

a banana (alanbanana), Friday, 12 November 2004 05:51 (twenty years ago)

Why wouldn't something belong on the list? Because they are not singles?

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Friday, 12 November 2004 06:16 (twenty years ago)

a) 0 (out of the ones I've heard)
b) 10
c)+ d) ~40
e) pretty much everything in c) and d)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 12 November 2004 06:23 (twenty years ago)

030.- FUTURE SOUND OF LONDON - "Papua New Guinea"

wow - i am surprised/delighted to see that included, much less that high.

tk (tk), Friday, 12 November 2004 06:26 (twenty years ago)

I'm mystified by the Geto Boys placing. The track's just not very good.

I have to say, I just downloaded it tonight and wasn't that impressed. I liked "Regulate," though -- which I had heard before but probably not since the mid-90s.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 12 November 2004 06:27 (twenty years ago)

a/ are shit
BLUR - "Coffee and TV"
is the only one that comes to mind

b/ aren't shit, but absolutely don't belong on the list
(well, i don’t like them, anyway)
HAPPY MONDAYS - "Kinky Afro"
WHITE TOWN - "Your Woman"
WARREN G - "Regulate"
DEEE-LITE - "Groove Is In the Heart"

c/ you haven't heard at all
maybe 1/4

d/ have heard, but not enough to pass judgement
nearly 1/2

e/ are you more interested in checking out because of this list
LAMB - "Gorecki"
PET SHOP BOYS - "Can You Forgive Her?"
MASSIVE ATTACK - "Unfinished Sympathy"

amateur!!st, Friday, 12 November 2004 06:30 (twenty years ago)

"Damn it Feels Good to Be a Gangsta" >>>>> "Mind Playing Tricks on Me"

tk (tk), Friday, 12 November 2004 06:30 (twenty years ago)

So does 'don't think they belong on the list' mean the ones you don't like?

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Friday, 12 November 2004 06:32 (twenty years ago)

d/ have heard, but not enough to pass judgement

actually this is more like 1/4 or 1/5
not 1/2

amateur!!st, Friday, 12 November 2004 06:37 (twenty years ago)

The only one I would say is completely utter shit is "Say My Name," a hideous piece of nothing with no connection to humanity.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Friday, 12 November 2004 06:37 (twenty years ago)

Just in time, St. Etienne are releasing a north american 'best of' this month, on Sub Pop. It's a really great tracklist, and that's from myself, who has almost their entire recorded output. It is called 'Travel Edition, 1991-2005'.

I'd strongly encourage everyone curious about the Et., esp. jaymc to buy this album if you've got any extra cash at the moment.

/proselytizing

You guys are killing me here.
Seriously..."Regulate"?! "Damn it Feels Good to be a Gangsta"? So when you found out about the Geto Boys through Office Space was your life changed forever?

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Friday, 12 November 2004 07:40 (twenty years ago)

And I will reiterate that there was no more lobbying for the track than occured on the original nominations thread.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Friday, 12 November 2004 07:41 (twenty years ago)

djdee, i think that you are being a troll now. people can prefer one song to another. also, making statements like that will get people on your bad side, just so you know.

dont make judgements about people on this board that you dont know. you will just get people pissed off... well, that seems to be your thing actually.

todd swiss (eliti), Friday, 12 November 2004 07:44 (twenty years ago)

todd swiss (eliti), Friday, 12 November 2004 07:44 (twenty years ago)

less todd swiss more geto boys would be like my ideal ILM.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Friday, 12 November 2004 08:15 (twenty years ago)

"Regulate" and "Damn it Feels Good..." are both good songs but to me they don't really stand anywhere near "Mind Playing Tricks..."
Here is why.

Those two songs are both a bit corny, Regulate is nearly a novelty song with its goofy storyline and the whole "Regulators! Mount up" thing and its definitely good but its also become such a touchpoint for whitebread (not a racial thing, a cultural thing) interpretations of hip-hop, like its the version of west coast that most people see as if it really represents all of the great music that came out around that time sorta bothers me. Plus I've heard it like a million times so its almost as hard to love any more as "Hey Ya."

"Damn..." also is one of those whitebread cultural touchpoints bcuz of "Office Space" which is a good movie but its also one of those "well, i don't really like hip-hop but you know that song from Office Space? Yeah that's really cool." And its a good song but a bit corny in execution, like the whole "the president is another KIND of gangsta!" thing is just so ... cheesy. Its a cool song.

But.

I LOVE "mind playing tricks on me." The musical lick is obviously just plain beautiful, the beat to me hits a lot closer to the heart like it's just so mournful. Plus the Geto Boys voices on this track seem to reflect the lyrics in their world-weary, exhausted outlook. And the LYRICS. jesus these things are amazing versions of human experience, all existential and laden with fear and paranoia, but never falling for corny lyrical cliches like fucking "if you smoke what i smoke getting high like every day" or cheesy boasting about a "brand new era" of g-funk "step to this i dare ya" whatever.

Scarface sets the tone -
At night I can't sleep, I toss and turn
Candle sticks in the dark, visions of bodies bein burned
Four walls just starin at a nigga
I'm paranoid, sleepin with my finger on the trigger

Evocatively claustrophobic...Every time he closes his eyes he starts sweating and blood comes out of his nose! Being tailed by headlights, confusing "caine [with] gold medal flour," being in fear of "three blind crippled and crazy senior citizens." Every sunday morning Scarface prays for forgiveness, contemplates suicide. Never mind the fucking end of the song when Bushwick Bill, beating on an unnamed attacker awakens and discovers he's smashing his fingers against cold concrete. An incredibly disturbing image forever imprinted on my brain.

Its 3:30 AM and I'm overtired but to me "Mind Playing Tricks" is so much more moving and powerful, I can't begin to describe...and I'm not going to be able to write like Tim Finney or someone and perfectly communicate my own reasons for why I love it. But I often feel like a lot of the time when people react to hip-hop they seem to approach hip-hop that makes them laugh for feel more comfortable or novelty-type shit more easily than they would something like "Mind Playing Tricks on Me."

I'm not saying thats what you guys are neccessarily doing but seriously, I'm amazed that in a poll w/ 5 pulp songs and 5 st etienne songs you find the highest ranking hip-hop track to be overrated.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Friday, 12 November 2004 08:33 (twenty years ago)

Oh dear, you were doing so well until that last paragraph.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 12 November 2004 08:45 (twenty years ago)

Haha that was just to piss people off actually.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 12 November 2004 08:51 (twenty years ago)

(I'm not talking about the artists as a whole, obviously, but about the particular songs that made the list.)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 12 November 2004 08:53 (twenty years ago)

(Though I haven't heard any songs by any of the rock bands on my C-list.)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 12 November 2004 08:54 (twenty years ago)

Oh and for ppl who haven't heard Isolee - its quite good. I voted for "Beau Mot Plage," it stood out on my list quite a bit, heh.

Tuomos, what don't you like about "TROY"?

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Friday, 12 November 2004 08:54 (twenty years ago)

I don't like Pete Rocks production in general, though CL Smooth is a decent enough rapper. I really haven't listened too much of them, admittedly.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 12 November 2004 08:55 (twenty years ago)

erm...can you expound a bit? I won't bite, I'm just wondering why you don't like it, that song is a personal all-time favorite of mine and I'm sorta curious about why it ended up relatively lower on the list than I expected.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Friday, 12 November 2004 08:57 (twenty years ago)

Maybe Pete Rock & CL Smooth should be on my D-list, because I can't even remember right now how the song goes. Sorry, can't be more definite that that.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 12 November 2004 08:57 (twenty years ago)

Fair enough. But yeah, definitely check out the Geto Boys! And Isolee.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Friday, 12 November 2004 08:58 (twenty years ago)

As for Pete Rock's production, it's way too smooth and jazzy for me. There's a lot of early-nineties rap I can't bring myself to like because of the jazziness of the production.

(x-post)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 12 November 2004 09:00 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I was thinking about going to local rap shop to listen to some Geto Boys. Should I rather try the LP "Mind Playing Tricks On Me" is on, or their greatest hits?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 12 November 2004 09:01 (twenty years ago)

I was into Mind Playin Tricks when it came out but I still like Damn it Feels Good To be Gangsta better, and yes, I didn't hear it until fucking Office Space.

Hi, I am a genius. a big one. (AaronHz), Friday, 12 November 2004 09:01 (twenty years ago)

the list is just fien. except that #6 and #16 need to switch places, and that the whole thign is owned and then some by the omgwtflolrofl hits of the 90s.

:| (....), Friday, 12 November 2004 09:11 (twenty years ago)

people that heard "Damn it Feels Good .." BEFORE office space came out actually exist. hard to believe i know.

tk (tk), Friday, 12 November 2004 09:12 (twenty years ago)

thanks for sharing.

Tuomos: You can't go wrong w/ We Can't Be Stopped which is the album w/ "MPTOM" and Til Death Do Us Part, the album that came right afterwards, is really underrated (by AMG anyway) and stands up w/ their best work - check the song "Six Feet Deep." I don't have the greatest hits album, its probably pretty good but I think their albums were strong enough to warrent just buying them individually.

Solo Scarface albums are also really strong - Mr. Scarface is Back is the classic but The Diary is also exceptional; it has "Never Seen a Man Cry" which is an amazing song, it really shows off Scarface's vocal talents, which Jess described thusly: "This is Scarface in old ghetto prophet mode; someone opens his jaw and pours wood finish down it, takes pocketknife and carves worrylines all over his face, tattoos perma-tears on each cheek."

Then you have Scarface's recent stuff which stands up really well with his older work - probably because his persona always sounded old/weary. Anyway, The Fix is a great album, its from 2002 and has "Guess Who's Back," "In Cold Blood" and "My Block" which are all great tracks. "My Block" is one of my favorite hip-hop videos ever.

xpost to Aaron: ISNT IT FUNNY HOW ITS WHITE GUYS BUT THEY PLAY TEH BLACK MUSIC HOW IRONICAL HAHAHAHHES NOT A GANGSTER HE WORKS IN AN OFFICE LOLOLOLOL!!!!1!!!1!!

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Friday, 12 November 2004 09:12 (twenty years ago)

"thanks for sharing" was directed at the aaron post from before.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Friday, 12 November 2004 09:13 (twenty years ago)

Regardless, MOST people that are fans of the song heard it there, unless they were really hardcore Geto Boys fans. The only album of theirs I owned before the film was We Can't Be Stopped. DIFGTBAG was previously only available on the Uncut Dope Best of as a new bonus track type thing. It wasn't on any of their proper albums.

Hi, I am a genius. a big one. (AaronHz), Friday, 12 November 2004 09:16 (twenty years ago)

djdee you are totally sorry. I won't be speaking to you again.

Hah dude I never was trying to claim "I WAS DOWN BEFORE OFFICE SPACE!!!" I was more talking about the "I don't like hip-hop BUT I like the song from Office Space" people. I.E. I wasn't talking about YOU. So please stop whining.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Friday, 12 November 2004 09:18 (twenty years ago)

Oh no what will i do xpost.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Friday, 12 November 2004 09:19 (twenty years ago)

I have no great quarrel with any of these except for nos 59, 71 and 83, which are rank.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 12 November 2004 09:23 (twenty years ago)

(that's the Lamb =83, not the Aphex =83)

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 12 November 2004 09:24 (twenty years ago)

I don't even remember that Cure song...

Hi, I am a genius. a big one. (AaronHz), Friday, 12 November 2004 09:26 (twenty years ago)

no diggity is such a shit tune. it might be better without the rapping. i have no idea how its such a classic.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Friday, 12 November 2004 13:32 (twenty years ago)

no diggity without the rapping = grandma's hands by bill withers

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 12 November 2004 13:34 (twenty years ago)

the only songs on the list I actively hate - 19, 34, 61, 73. I've never heard anything by Pavement or Belle & Sebastian which hasn't filled me with horror, so I'm in no rush to hear those specific songs either. Everything else, I either like or haven't heard.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 12 November 2004 13:38 (twenty years ago)

everyone knew that already. the track's great tho - you might at first be disappointed with the understated production but it's such a floor-filler. i heard a Harvey-esque remix once and i preferred it tho - tempo increased so it sounded like Kid Creole!

xpost

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Friday, 12 November 2004 13:39 (twenty years ago)

i dont hate the song, but theres got to be a rap-less version out there. anyway, black street's best single is baby be mine.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Friday, 12 November 2004 13:43 (twenty years ago)

I only "don't like" 076. Apart from the ones I don't know (and I guess there would be more I don't like on that list), I'm fine with all of these.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 12 November 2004 13:44 (twenty years ago)

My guess is that whatever Pavement song was nominated would've finished in the same position.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 12 November 2004 14:46 (twenty years ago)

djdee -- re: "Mind Playing Tricks" vs. "Regulate" -- admittedly, I am a poor listener, since I listen to hip-hop mostly for the groove and the flow. I have no doubt that "Mind Playing Tricks" is more lyrically evocative -- and I'll listen to it again for that specifically -- but it just didn't grab me sonically.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 12 November 2004 14:49 (twenty years ago)

(Whereas a lot of W. Coast stuff appeals to me instantly because of the laid-back funk style, which is at least half the reason I like "Today Was a Good Day," too.)

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 12 November 2004 14:51 (twenty years ago)

truly you are a ghost

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Friday, 12 November 2004 16:06 (twenty years ago)

The 90s were the point where I really checked out of certain genres and acts. I was aware of Saint Etienne as "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" was hitting the radio just as I was turning away from it but they ended up in a weird musical blindspot for me.

Belle & Sebastian I completely missed until "Legal Man", a song I had such a visceral negative reaction to that I've since actively avoided everything else by them (I did the same thing to Radiohead; the only thing that turned me around on them was accidentally running across the videos for "Paranoid Android" and "Just").

I probably do know the Slowdive song, I just can't place it by title.

"Deeper And Deeper" is the most overrated Madonna single that isn't called "Cherish". Including "Ray of Light" was actually a copy-paste mistake; I don't remember which song I actually intended to put there. And of all of the fantastic Smashing Pumpkins and Aaliyah songs, those two? Ew.

The Beastie Boys have been working the continuum extending from hardcore suck to mediocre since the second half of _Ill Communication_; the only thing to recommend "Intergalactic" is the "mmm... DROP!" bit.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 12 November 2004 16:14 (twenty years ago)

There is another Aaliyah song on there, Dan.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 12 November 2004 16:18 (twenty years ago)

'Deeper And Deeper' is fantastic, i'm pretty sure you're in a minority on this one Danno. great strings, cute retro-disco vibe, not bad lyrics for her.

'Intergalactic' is a monster track, one million dancefloors (and bootlegs) can't be wrong. it totally belongs (and i really hope Hello Nasty makes the album list).

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Friday, 12 November 2004 16:21 (twenty years ago)

There is another Aaliyah song on there, Dan.

Yes, I know. My opinion is that this song should have been "Try Again" (assuming it was eligible, can't remember when it was released) or "If Your Girl Only Knew" (aka the most underrated Aaliyah single).

'Deeper And Deeper' is fantastic, i'm pretty sure you're in a minority on this one Danno

Gee, really?

'Intergalactic' is a monster track, one million dancefloors (and bootlegs) can't be wrong.

Many more dancefloors played "The Macarena" but I don't even know if it was nominated for this poll. I am playing the "the fact that it was popular doesn't mean I have to like it" card.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 12 November 2004 16:31 (twenty years ago)

Or rather "I don't have to think it's better than average" as I don't actively dislike it, otherwise I would have listed it as a shit song.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 12 November 2004 16:31 (twenty years ago)

"Deeper And Deeper" is my favourite Madonna song!

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 12 November 2004 16:32 (twenty years ago)

it's one of the few songs I've actually had dreams about.

LSTD (answer) (sexyDancer), Friday, 12 November 2004 16:33 (twenty years ago)

I think "Try Again" is from 2000. I like "If Your Girl Only Knew". I like "One in a Million" a lot too though (not enough to vote for it though.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 12 November 2004 16:36 (twenty years ago)

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Friday, 12 November 2004 16:36 (twenty years ago)

this 'don't belong' thing is just daft. why don't people just post their own top 100s and be done with it?

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Friday, 12 November 2004 16:38 (twenty years ago)

you should hear the ODB track

LSTD (answer) (sexyDancer), Friday, 12 November 2004 16:38 (twenty years ago)

i'm really surprised neither of you like 'Can You Forgive Her' either.

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Friday, 12 November 2004 16:39 (twenty years ago)

I'd heard every song before, and I like the vast majority of them. we actually listened to the entire thing 100 through 1 on Wed. at my office, and the most painful bits for me were losing my religion and intergalactic. cherub rock isn't very good, and I still don't see the fuss over "deeper and deeper" or that lamb track, but removing complaints about what should have been there (e.g. more rave), it was a very enjoyable listen.

scott pl. (scott pl.), Friday, 12 November 2004 16:39 (twenty years ago)

yeah there's very little I can't stand on that list. There are songs from bands I can't stand, like Radiohead and Nirvana, especially so high up, but "Paranoid Android" and "Smells Like Teen Spirit" are decent enough. They wouldn't have made by top 100, but they're not awful.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 12 November 2004 16:41 (twenty years ago)

this 'don't belong' thing is just daft. why don't people just post their own top 100s and be done with it?

Gimme a couple hours.

And my ambivalence to PSB is well documented. That song's at least notable but it's still more annoying than enjoyable. The only 90s song of theirs I know that I'd be OK with being on the list is "Where the Streets Have No Name / Can't Take My Eyes Off of You".

And "Cherub Rock" is still the most totally random inclusion on the list--I guess it was the only SP track nominated, but even still.

so, what have we learned?

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Friday, 12 November 2004 17:57 (twenty years ago)

We have learned that jel lives in a bubble.

(KIDDING)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 12 November 2004 17:58 (twenty years ago)

so, what have we learned?

Some songs I've heard
Some songs I like
Some songs I don't like
I'm not in much agreement with the rest of ILM, what else is new?

Anyway, thanks to Gear for running the whole thing!!

jel -- (jel), Friday, 12 November 2004 18:01 (twenty years ago)

My story about Ray of Light is that when it came out I had a stomach flu and I saw the video on TV where everything is going by super-fast and the music is all dance-y and it started to make me seriously naseous until I threw up. Now WHENEVER I hear the "...in the sky-y-y-y" or whatever my stomach starts whirling around like a washing machine and I HAVE to turn it off.

And whats weirder is that if it wasn't for this strangy psychological association I have with it and losing my lunch, I think I would probably LIKE the song - seems decent enough. Even thinking about it though makes me want to hurl.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Friday, 12 November 2004 18:13 (twenty years ago)

verse:

Zephyr in the sky at night I wonder
Do my tears of mourning sink beneath the sun
She's got herself a universe gone quickly
For the call of thunder threatens everyone

chorus:

And I feel like I just got home
And I feel
And I feel like I just got home
And I feel

Faster than the speeding light she's flying
Trying to remember where it all began
She's got herself a little piece of heaven
Waiting for the time when Earth shall be as one

(chorus)

Quicker than a ray of light
Quicker than a ray of light
Quicker than a ray of light

(verse)

And I feel
Quicker than a ray of light
Then gone for
Someone else shall be there
Through the endless years

She's got herself a universe
She's got herself a universe
She's got herself a universe

And I feel
And I feel
And I feel like I just got home
And I feel

Quicker than a ray of light she's flying
Quicker than a ray of light I'm flying

I AM THE ASSHOLE HERE (Dan Perry), Friday, 12 November 2004 18:14 (twenty years ago)

I never realized how stupid those lyrics are until just now.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 12 November 2004 18:15 (twenty years ago)

Madonna in stupid lyrics shocker!

Have you listened to "Cherish" or "True Blue" lately? (Dan Perry), Friday, 12 November 2004 18:15 (twenty years ago)

Hahaha hey I didn't SAY I was shocked! I just never really paid attention to them before.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 12 November 2004 18:16 (twenty years ago)

Really, it's safest to assume the lyrics are going to be horrible and just get on with the dancing (aka "How Dan Tolerates 'Everybody'").

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 12 November 2004 18:19 (twenty years ago)

So when you found out about the Geto Boys through Office Space was your life changed forever?

I'd just like to state for the record that my answer to this question is NO. And I'll echo jaymc's comment that the lyrics are probably very interesting, but the 'song/track' doesn't grab me at all. There are songs that I like for extra-musical reasons that I voted for too, but I wouldn't say something like "So when you found out about Aaliyah through Dr. Doolittle was your life changed forever?" Actually, that is the kind of question I would ask, but still, I don't think anyone here needs to prove their gangsta-rap cred. I mean what exactly were you trying to say with that question anyway? Is that track the "one true path" to gangsta rap or something?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 12 November 2004 18:20 (twenty years ago)

"Really, it's safest to assume the lyrics are going to be horrible and just get on with the dancing (aka "How Dan Tolerates 'Everybody'")."

That doesn't mean when you see "Zephyr in the sky at night I wonder/Do my tears of mourning sink beneath the sun" you don't go, "Jesus is that a stupid fucking line."

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 12 November 2004 18:22 (twenty years ago)

You forgot the hysterical laughter, but otherwise yeah.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 12 November 2004 18:26 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, it was hard to crack up, but I've been busy suppressing giggles about RENEWED VIRGINS all morning so I've got practice.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 12 November 2004 18:28 (twenty years ago)

"so, what have we learned?"

Of course, its fun to hear your rants about the poll results, but beyond that, I find threads like these useful.
I like to hear what my fellow ILMers personal views are about such things so that later on, when maybe I'm asking the board about whether or not I should buy album x, and someone gives me a strong opinion , one way or the other, I can have a better idea of whether or not their musical views allign with mine.

peepee (peepee), Friday, 12 November 2004 18:33 (twenty years ago)

what I've learned is it's much more difficult to find jpgs and gifs for singles covers than it is for album covers

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 12 November 2004 18:33 (twenty years ago)

So true, so true.

I FORGOT "Big Pimping" on my hate list!

okay, dan, i'll bite - what the fuck is wrong with big pimpin? (mel's "nah" was actually more hurtful than dan's hate)

m. (mitchlnw), Friday, 12 November 2004 19:31 (twenty years ago)

It can basically be summed up as "meh". "Money Ain't A Thing" is infinitely preferable to this track, which banks on the listener's ability to fall in love with the flute in order to succeed.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 12 November 2004 19:34 (twenty years ago)

pretty safe bet, I'd say.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Friday, 12 November 2004 19:47 (twenty years ago)

Safe bet for people who aren't me or my wife or Melissa, basically.

daavid (daavid), Friday, 12 November 2004 20:19 (twenty years ago)

Spencer (many xxxxxxposts)
of course I don't believe that there is "one true path" to gangsta rap! (although there is a diletantte's path as well...)

But the only way I can imagine thinking that the beat for "Damn it feels good..." is better than "MPTOM" is if you simply don't like the production aesthetic (early 90s sample-based breakbeat etc.) because in my mind MPTOM is one of the most beautiful hip-hop instrumentals ever constructed.

xpost to Daavid: when i was reading your list it was "not heard, not heard, not heard, 3 ST. ETIENNE SONGS IN A ROW?! THEY ARE THE BEST EVER!!!" and I can't help but think this helps explain the voting as a whole (note: i'm exaggerating and joking around, don't take this too seriously).

Well yes, I agree. I feel a bit guilty for missing on the hip-hop R&B of the 90s.

I think you are reading more into that than what I actually intended. xpost alex

I mean seriously how many times do i have to hear "I don't really like gangsta rap, except for that one song from Office Space!!!"
I'm not saying that those people are WRONG for being exposed that way to the music, but I am saying that considering a lot of ppl on here fashion themselves as "critics" there's a lot more for them to engage with than the one song from that movie and some random Dre tracks.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Friday, 12 November 2004 20:33 (twenty years ago)

xxpost to djdee
I think you're making some strange assumptions about the gangsta rap audience. I have *never* heard anything remotely like, "I only like that one track from Office Space." As for my tastes and experience of it, well you obviously have no idea. Just because I don't like a single track (note that I never mention "Damn it Feels Good..."), doesn't mean anything, and certainly doesn't mean I get all my knowledge of gangsta rap from a single "white" movie - which is I guess what you're saying, which is pretty stupid, especially in light of your intelligent comments on the rockism thread.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 12 November 2004 20:49 (twenty years ago)

xpost to spencer (and damn these lists are really annoying, start a new thread people!)
I'm sorry I didn't mean to make it sound as if I'm specifically talking about you because I'm NOT. You're right that I have no idea about your personal experiences with music (and I actually said as much when I first responded to your question, but it was eaten when ILM stopped working for a couple minutes about a half hour ago)

Anyway yeah...I didn't mean to make it sound like I was calling you out specifically. But I have heard SO many people - particularly in college, predominantly annoyingly sheltered white ppl (not to otherize my own whiteness or anything) saying that kind of shit about "Damn it feels good..." so there is some context for my reasoning.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Friday, 12 November 2004 20:53 (twenty years ago)

OK, but you must realize that the primary audience for gangsta rap are those same people!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 12 November 2004 20:54 (twenty years ago)

Perhaps thats what I find so frustrating about the song! Its unbearable popularity that I think is unproportional to its actual QUALITY (subjectively of course) when compared to the rest of the music in gangsta rap, never mind the geto boys themselves!

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Friday, 12 November 2004 20:57 (twenty years ago)

This reeks of avoiding work, but everybody else is doing it...
All commentary is solely personal views and so forth.

100.- PALACE MUSIC - "New Partner": A very sweet song but I don't even see this as the best Bonnie Prince Billy song. Strange to inspire so much love.
100.- AIR - "All I Need": Great song, but again I don't even think this is the best single on THAT ALBUM. La Femme D'Argent, anyone?
098.- MADONNA - "Deeper and Deeper": Not a Madonna I like.
098.- TEENAGE FANCLUB - "The Concept": Never Heard it.
097.- WU-TANG CLAN - "Shame On A Nigga": Brilliant, just missed my voting in lieu of other ODB love. Great song.
096.- BEASTIE BOYS - "Intergalactic": Always a favorite.
095.- MADONNA - "Ray of Light": As noted, stunningly dumb lyrics but a fun track. No arguments.
094.- CORNERSHOP - "Brimful of Asha": It's been forever since I've heard this. Need to relisten.
092.- BJORK - "Human Behaviour": Maybe my fave Bjork.
092.- ORBITAL - "Belfast": This wouldn't even make my top twenty on Orbital but I'm a Brown Album come lately heretic, so disregard my opinion.

090.- ARAB STRAP - "The First Big Weekend": Never Heard It.
089.- NOTORIOUS B.I.G. - "Hypnotize": I love it even though I'd rather not give Puffy props for his mumbling and recycling. "Papa been smooth since days of Underoos" is a bitchin' epitaph.

087.- PAVEMENT - "Shady Lane": Never Heard It.

069.- SAINT ETIENNE - "Avenue": Never Heard of it.
068.- SAINT ETIENNE - "You're In A Bad Way": Never Heard It.
067.- SAINT ETIENNE - "Nothing Can Stop Us": Never Heard It.

061.- HAPPY MONDAYS - "Kinky Afro": Never Heard It.
060.- WU-TANG CLAN - "C.R.E.A.M.": I've owned two copies of 36 chambers; the first was a tape dub with this left off and the second was a scratched CD that was fucked up for the last five tracks. I've since downloaded, but this never had the same resonance as I heard it late in the game. Can't argue though.
059.- BJORK - "Joga": No Argument.

And let's not crack on "Cloreen Baconskin". SQUIRREL MEAT!

make sure they're renewed virgins

Reupholstered... for your pleasure.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 12 November 2004 21:20 (twenty years ago)

'APHEX TWIN - "Windowlicker" why is this so high exactly?'

it made the top 20 over here, maybe it wz that mainstream recognition.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 12 November 2004 21:21 (twenty years ago)

"Cloreen Baconskin", is in my top twenty of the 90s.

peepee (peepee), Friday, 12 November 2004 21:21 (twenty years ago)

"of course I don't believe that there is "one true path" to gangsta rap! (although there is a diletantte's path as well...)"

You must be aware of the irony of pointing out that there is "one NOT TRUE path" here, right? Please be aware of the irony. Think of it.

"so there is some context for my reasoning."

I'd try to actually focus on what people are saying on this threads rather than spending a lot of time focusing on what other people you've know have said. We all know there are a lot of people out there who say, believe and do a lot of stupid things. Using them as examples to prop up your argument doesn't give your argument any weight (in fact, more often than not it detracts from it.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 12 November 2004 21:34 (twenty years ago)

Belle & Sebastian I completely missed until "Legal Man", a song I had such a visceral negative reaction to that I've since actively avoided everything else by them

Dan, "Legal Man" is almost universally considered the absolute worst B&S single, and really it sounds nothing like anything they did before or since. Try the "Lazy Line Painter Jane" ep set or "If You're Feeling Sinister" to hear why people actually like them.

Hi, I am a genius. a big one. (AaronHz), Friday, 12 November 2004 21:48 (twenty years ago)

I'm not claiming that a dilatantte's path is any "less true," jesus!

And bringing up what people I've talked to say was about why I was tired of one song, simply explaining my own preference for the other. I apologize if it came across as a presumptious attack on other members of ILM.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Friday, 12 November 2004 21:48 (twenty years ago)

I think Prince might own the inevitable '80s poll

The vote-splitting might take it's toll when the inevitable 10 songs or so of his are nominated, though. He'll definitely own the list but he might not place in the top 20 (like St. Etienne).

If "Regret" can make #6 in this poll, I have very high hopes for New Order's placing on the 80s poll, however.

Gear, are we going to be seeing the rest of the list (101 - ?) sometime? I know I'd be pretty interested in seeing that if it isn't too much work to put up.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Friday, 12 November 2004 21:55 (twenty years ago)

And what about those Albums?
Because I think we're done here.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 12 November 2004 21:57 (twenty years ago)

This list needs "Everlong". (and the thread less kvetching from one djdee)

In a week, I believe.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Friday, 12 November 2004 21:59 (twenty years ago)

I wonder if anyone else thinks that "Renegade Snares (Foul Play VIP Mix)" is really kind of a weak tune and a poor choice as the sole representative of jungle on this list.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Friday, 12 November 2004 22:01 (twenty years ago)

I think it's a great tune, but I wish there was more jungle on the list (I actually will admit that it's not my favorite tune and I only voted for it above "Hitman" and "RIP" and "Dread Bass" cuz I figured the other three probably wouldn't chart anyway.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 12 November 2004 22:04 (twenty years ago)

(Which in retrospect seems kind of pointless haha.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 12 November 2004 22:05 (twenty years ago)

Actually, I only *really like* "Legal Man" and things after it. The early stuff is too by-the-numbers-c86 sonically for me (however the lyrics are always great).

Hahaha, I thought it was "Goddess of the universe".

Hi, I am a genius. a big one. (AaronHz), Friday, 12 November 2004 22:08 (twenty years ago)

isn't "Windowlicker" the one w/all the sex noises?

artdamages (artdamages), Friday, 12 November 2004 22:08 (twenty years ago)

Fair enough Spencer, I was just saying that if Dan doesn't like LM he should try the earlier stuff as there's quite a difference in sound.

I think Prince might own the inevitable '80s poll

-- Riot Gear!

...He'll definitely own the list....

-- The Good Dr. Bill

I'm not so sure of that. I actually think the 80's list will be "owned" by many fo the 80's giants. I expect to see at least as much New Order, Smiths, Pet Shop Boys, Madonna etc.

daavid (daavid), Friday, 12 November 2004 22:14 (twenty years ago)

I agree with Daavid ... OTOH, I'm not at all certain as to which bands would dominate an ILM 70's poll, so perhaps this will be the more interesting poll to do next. Not until the new year, though.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 12 November 2004 22:20 (twenty years ago)

This is Rockist Scientist's list, as per his request:

Tracks:

1) Grupo Niche: "Cielo de Tambores"

It starts off as a fairly average salsa song, with maybe a slightly odd feel. Something about it sounds "60s" to me, although it's actually from 1990. There's a momentary switch to a style, which seems to be a reference to a distinctively Colombian genre, maybe a folkloric one. All of this builds up to the transition which almost always makes me want to throw my head back a little and close my eyes. (Someone who knows music theory explained it to me this way: "The more 'folkloric' part in the middle corresponds to a shift from D minor to D major, and an interesting thing. . . is that it shifts back to minor, but now the key is F minor instead of D minor. In music-theory terms, D major to F minor is an instance of the most distant of all possible key relations.") The chorus begins to stretch out the world "cielo" in a way reminiscent of the Doppler effect. The timbales, which had been absent for most of the song, come back in at that point. When the lead vocalists comes back in, he attacks the lines very aggressively, which is the more striking because lots of time has been allowed to establish the trippy chorus.

There's something about that passage in this particular song conjures up the slightly altered state that results from long periods of salsa dancing.

2) Sinead O'Connor - "Nothing Compares 2 U"
3) Björk - "Human Behaviour"
4) Montell Jordan - "This is How We Do It"
5) Deee-Lite "Groove is in the Heart"
6) Bjork – “Venus As A Boy”
7) Beck - "Loser"
8) LL Cool J - "Around The Way Girl"
9) Tortoise - "Djed"
10)Boredoms - "Super Going"
11)Photek - Ni-Ten-Ichi-Ryu
12)Digital Underground – The Humpty Dance
13)OMC, "How Bizarre"
14)Nirvana - "Smells Like Teen Spirit"
15)Bjork "Hyperballad"
16)Cher – “Believe”
17)Jay-Z - "Big Pimpin'"

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 12 November 2004 23:24 (twenty years ago)

Since so many are doing this:

100.- PALACE MUSIC - "New Partner" - don't remember this tune, but I've heard a lot of theirs (or was it his?) and found them sort of dully pleasant.
100.- AIR - "All I Need" - I like this, but don't really care
098.- MADONNA - "Deeper and Deeper" - I love Madonna, but this one never really stayed with me
098.- TEENAGE FANCLUB - "The Concept" - never saw the appeal, never hated them either though
097.- WU-TANG CLAN - "Shame On A Nigga" - fantastic, one of the few absolute key acts of the '90s, maybe my favourite of theirs. Should have been much higher.
096.- BEASTIE BOYS - "Intergalactic" - hugely fun. I think it was on my longish shortlist.
095.- MADONNA - "Ray of Light" - I like this a lot, but it just missed out on my votes
094.- CORNERSHOP - "Brimful of Asha" - I like this too, as long as we're talking the Fatboy Slim mix - the original is a bit dreary.
092.- BJORK - "Human Behaviour" - she's someone I always like, and this might be my favourite, but 92 would be somewhere near where I'd put it, I guess.
092.- ORBITAL - "Belfast" - I was surprised this beat Chime, for which I voted, but it's wonderful too, and would have made my top, ooh, 40 or 50.
091.- ISOLEE - "Beau Mot Plage" - don't know this at all
090.- ARAB STRAP - "The First Big Weekend" - always enjoyed them, but have never bought anything.
089.- NOTORIOUS B.I.G. - "Hypnotize" - he's one of the huge figures of rap that I never really got much (also Tupac, mostly). Important, but I never connected with him much.
088.- THE MAGNETIC FIELDS - "The Luckiest Guy On the Lower East Side" - I think I may never have even heard him at all, extraordinarily. Probably not my thing at all.
087.- PAVEMENT - "Shady Lane" - I never really understood what made them better than, say, A Witness.
086.- SAINT ETIENNE - "Like A Motorway" - maybe my favourite of theirs, and I guess somewhere around the same position I'd have it.
085.- SLOWDIVE - "Alison" - oh dearie me no
083.- LAMB - "Gorecki" - even worse
083.- APHEX TWIN - "Girl/Boy Song" - tremendous! I always preferred the big dance acts I could actually dance to, and had some instinctive reaction against IDM, but I love him.
081.- BLUR - "Song 2" - my favourite ever Blur song (not saying much - I dislike virtually everything else), but I'm not sure it would make my top 100
081.- DIGITAL UNDERGROUND - "Humpty Dance" - strangely I don't really remember this, but I recall liking them.
079.- DE LA SOUL - "A Rollerskating Jam Named Saturdays" - wonderful, a really joyous track, lovely, should have been higher
079.- MASSIVE ATTACK - "Angel" - not one of my big MA faves, but I love Horace Andy's voice, and they're one of my five favourite acts of the decade
078.- THE PIXIES - "Alec Eiffel" - to be honest there wasn't much newish rock I liked in the '90s, and while the Pixies struck me as among the best, I never loved them, and don't remember this track, though I undoubtedly heard it many times.
077.- EMINEM - "My Name Is" - he got better, but I love this and was surprised it didn't do better
076.- DESTINY'S CHILD - "Say My Name" - one of the great R&B highlights of the decade, and should have been higher. A hugely potent song.
075.- NAUGHTY BY NATURE - "O.P.P." - I think their attitudes put me off them (I can't defend this, given the hip hop I love with no better attitudes) before I even heard them, and I've never heard much, and don't recall this.
074.- BASEMENT JAXX - "Rendez-Vu" - I prefer Red Alert, but they are big favourites, and this should have been higher
073.- OASIS - "Live Forever" - oh fucking hell. Hate them.
072.- MY BLOODY VALENTINE - "When You Sleep" - I quite liked them, but haven't been interested enough to go back and play them again since about the late '80s.
071.- THE CURE - "Pictures of You" - I liked Love Cats and one or two others back then, then got bored with them
070.- NOTORIOUS B.I.G. featuring PUFF DADDY and MASE - "Mo Money, Mo Problems" - don't like Puffy either, but this was a very good record
069.- SAINT ETIENNE - "Avenue" - another of my favourites of theirs. Maybe they might get two records in my top 100.
068.- SAINT ETIENNE - "You're In A Bad Way" - um, but only two. I always like them, but have never felt passionately about them.
067.- SAINT ETIENNE - "Nothing Can Stop Us" - pretty.
066.- JEFF BUCKLEY - "Hallelujah" - preferred his dad, and never got excited about Jeff
065.- PETE ROCK & CL SMOOTH - "They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)" - I always really liked what I have heard of them, and wish I had more, but don't recall this one in particular.
064.- ORBITAL - "Halcyon" - again, wonderful.
063.- LL COOL J - "Mama Said Knock You Out" - I sort of lost interest in him a bit by the '90s. This was excellent though.
062.- MISSY ELLIOTT - "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)" - this too, though rather overshadowed for me by the magnificence since
061.- HAPPY MONDAYS - "Kinky Afro" - yeah, okay, though I never cared that much.
060.- WU-TANG CLAN - "C.R.E.A.M." - I'm pretty uncritical in my love for almost everything Wu. Should have been higher.
059.- BJORK - "Joga" - I have this, but don't particularly remember it.
058.- PULP - "This Is Hardcore" - my favourite group ever, probably, but this album was a disappointment to me. This is still terrific, but didn't make my list.
057.- TLC - "Creep" - magnificent. I used to love annoying Radiohead fans at college by insisting that their Creep wasn't remotely the best song of that title that year.
056.- THE SMASHING PUMPKINS - "Cherub Rock" - always struck me as uninteresting, but don't remember this track
055.- UNDERWORLD - "Cowgirl" - was in my top ten, I think - another of my favourite acts of the '90s (Pulp, Wu, Massive Attack would be the big ones, for me)
054.- THE KLF - "Last Train To Trancentral" - I loved them, and this is a really thrilling track
053.- PORTISHEAD - "Sour Times" - beautiful and moving.
052.- MADONNA - "Vogue" - my favourite Madonna of the decade, probably around this position for me
051.- MOBB DEEP - "Shook Ones Pt. II" - I love Mobb Deep, and this may be their strongest moment.
050.- PULP - "Do You Remember the First Time?" - maybe not in my top 5 Pulp songs, but still in my top 30 of the decade.
049.- MAZZY STAR - "Fade Into You" - they never really grabbed me, and I only vaguely recall this.
047.- AALIYAH - "One In A Million" - seems about right - there's a fair bit of female R&B I prefer from the '90s, though.
047.- WHITE TOWN - "Your Woman" - this was quite an impressive single, but I never cared.
046.- MY BLOODY VALENTINE - "To Here Knows When" - don't recall this one.
045.- BELLE AND SEBASTIAN - "Stars of Track and Field" - oh good lord no. Possibly unfairly, they symbolise much of what I dislike in indie. A lot of my friends love them.
044.- R.E.M. - "Losing My Religion" - this may be their best, but it wouldn't get near my top 100.
043.- THE ORB - "Little Fluffy Clouds" - happy enough to see this rather lovely record in the 100, though I don't love it that much really.
042.- THE MAGNETIC FIELDS - "100,000 Fireflies" - never heard
040.- BLUR - "Coffee and TV" - didn't like this at all
040.- ICE CUBE - "It Was A Good Day" - I like him a lot, and have a couple of his albums, but don't have this track. I think I heard it once and thought it was terrific, but I'm not certain.
039.- THE KLF (FEATURING TAMMY WYNETTE) - "Justified and Ancient" - a stunning combination, an hilariously great record.
038.- PULP - "Babies" - the thing that made me know I had found a band I would love enormously.
037.- PET SHOP BOYS - "Can You Forgive Her?" - their greatness started to fade in the early '90s, but this seems about right.
036.- OMNI TRIO - "Renegade Snares (Foul Play VIP Mix)" - a disappointing selection of jungle on offer. This is fantastic, a real favourite, but one of several for me. There should have been lots more here.
035.- THE NOTORIOUS B.I.G. - "Juicy" - don't really recall this one.
034.- NEW RADICALS - "You Get What You Give" - they never grabbed my attention really, and I don't remember this.
033.- PET SHOP BOYS - "Being Boring" - I like this a lot, but it wouldn't have been this high for me.
032.- PULP - "Disco 2000" - their greatest riff, and it mentions a Martin in it. Good enough for me.
030.- FUTURE SOUND OF LONDON - "Papua New Guinea" - a wonderful and epochal record. The 12" sounds fucking great at 45 too, BTW.
030.- BRITNEY SPEARS - "Baby One More Time" - a fine pop record, but I am disappointed not to see Mmmbop and Back For Good high in this list.
029.- OL' DIRTY BASTARD (FEATURING KELIS) - "Got Your Money" - absolutely wonderful, and it made my list. Kelis is another big favourite of mine.
028.- UNDERWORLD - "Born Slippy NUXX" - I'm surprised this wasn't higher. It felt like a really central record of the '90s, and I still find it immensely thrilling.
027.- TRICKY - "Black Steel" - I loved this at the time, but he hasn't stayed with me hugely well. Happy enough to see it hereabouts, though.
026.- SAINT ETIENNE - "He's On the Phone" - I hadn't expected this to finish well above Avenue and Motorway. I love the 'yes' bits though.
025.- 2PAC - "California Love" - I mentioned not loving 2pac, but this is a tremendous record. Matt DC DJed just after me at the last Club FT, and his playing this made one of my best friends say it was better than anything in my set!
024.- DEPECHE MODE - "Enjoy the Silence" - I'll demur from the gag, but I never liked them at all.
023.- DAFT PUNK - "Da Funk" - terrific.
022.- THE CARDIGANS - "Lovefool" - not for me, thanks.
021.- BELLE AND SEBASTIAN - "The State I Am In" - I have already made my position clear on this lot, I believe.
020.- JAY-Z - "Big Pimpin'" - yeah, this is good, but wouldn't have been nearly as high for me
019.- DAFT PUNK - "Around the World" - my favourite of theirs still.
018.- DR. DRE - "Nuthin' But A G Thang" - solid gold, though a dangerous album for me, with my propensity to sing along to the walkman, late at night, in a mostly-black area, as a middle aged white guy in a suit - I think walking past young black people rapping 'I'm a nigga with a motherfuckin' gun' isn't wise.
017.- SINEAD O'CONNOR - "Nothing Compares 2 U" - nice, maybe perfect.
016.- STARDUST - "Music Sounds Better With You" - wonderful, belongs on any list of best or most representative '90s records.
015.- MASSIVE ATTACK - "Unfinished Sympathy" - too low! another solid gold classic, wonderful on every level.
014.- BECK - "Loser" - haha oh god why does anyone like this man's records?
013.- AALIYAH - "Are You That Somebody?" - okay, too high for me, but I like it a lot.
012.- NIRVANA - "Smells Like Teen Spirit" - yeah, I liked this, but much too high. 'They set punk back twenty years!' one friend of mine protested, which I could never quite work out.
011.- BLACKSTREET - "No Diggity" - I liked this, but it didn't tempt me to vote for it.
010.- BJORK - "Hyperballad" - okay, I like her, but top 10? Not for me.
009.- RADIOHEAD - "Paranoid Android" - much as I like Melissa, I have not managed to extend that one iota to Radiohead.
008.- APHEX TWIN - "Windowlicker" - brilliant.
007.- WARREN G - "Regulate" - I've not heard this enough. I must get it out and play it some more. Higher than I'd expected, but it had to be here.
006.- NEW ORDER - "Regret" - I find I have this track three times, and have undoubtedly heard it scores of times, but don't much remember it. My position on them was always 'good, but very overrated'
005.- GETO BOYS - "Mind Playing Tricks On Me" - I'm not sure I have ever heard this, but I want to.
004.- MY BLOODY VALENTINE - "Soon" - see above. I never saw them as anything special.
003.- THE BREEDERS - "Cannonball" - ...but better than the Breeders. I remember this being very popular in its day, and I was surprised then. I'm astonished now.
002.- DEEE-LITE - "Groove Is In the Heart" - magnificent, one of the most perfect party records ever made.
001.- PULP - "Common People" - perhaps my favourite record ever. I remember the Ivor Novello Songwriting Awards gave it Best Lyric and Best Music, but something ridiculous like Country House won Best Song, and I always wondered what the non-musical, non-lyrical failing was.

haha, has anyone actually read much of what I just wrote there?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 12 November 2004 23:47 (twenty years ago)

I don't remember my list, but I remember I was probably the only person who voted for my top two.
