Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Sunday, 14 November 2004 00:09 (twenty-one years ago)

That was posted yesterday. I would think the rest of the media would have picked it up by now. (This may just be my way of hoping this ain't true.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Sunday, 14 November 2004 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

m. (mitchlnw), Sunday, 14 November 2004 01:07 (twenty-one years ago)

In October of 2000, the rapper was almost finished a stint in rehab when he made a run for it, spending a month as a fugitive, during which time he performed at the Hammerstein Ballroom in front of hundreds of stunned fans.
Whoa, that was four years ago already? Making a surprise appearance on stage, walking off, and becoming a fugitive again before he could be found or caught = coolest thing ever.

Sources close to ODB said he had been complaining of chest pains earlier in the day. No further details are available as of yet.

I'm consistently amazed by this kind of silly hyperbole on ILM at the news of a death.

It's sad, but... come on.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 14 November 2004 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Update at the MTV story:

A statement was released Saturday evening by ODB's mother, Cherry Jones. "This evening I received a phone call that is every mother's worst dream," she said. "My son, Russell Jones, passed away. To the public, he was known as Ol' Dirty Bastard. To me, he was known as Rusty, the kindest and most generous soul on earth. I appreciate all the support I received. Russell was more than a rapper — he was a loving father, brother, uncle and most of all, son. With love, Cherry Jones."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 14 November 2004 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

amateur!!st, Sunday, 14 November 2004 01:40 (twenty-one years ago)

"didn't he recently record some stuff for roc-a-fella?"

There was the single last year and the Neptunes' track. I don't think anything else has been released (I think he was on an unreleased Method Man track, too.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Sunday, 14 November 2004 01:41 (twenty-one years ago)

There was also "Old Man" thing on the Masta Killa album.

RIP, man. One of the all time greats.

My favorite OBD verse, a lot of peoples I'm sure:

Yo...!

Style from my vocal
Couldn't peep it with a pair of bi-focals
I'm no joker! Play me as a joker
Be on you like a house on fire! Smoke ya!
Crews be actin like they gangs, anyway
Be like, "Warriors! Come out and playiyay!"
Burn me, I get into shit, I let it out like diarrhea
Got burnt once, but that was only gonorrhea
Dirty, I keep shit stinks in my drawers
So I can get fzza-funky for yah
Murder, taste the flame of the Wu-Tang RAHH!
Here comes the Tiger verse Crane!
Ow, be like wild with my style
Punk! You playing me, chump, you get DUMPED
WU! Is comin THROUGH! At a theatre near YOU!
And get funk like a SHOE!

juiceboxxx (juiceboxxx), Sunday, 14 November 2004 02:23 (twenty-one years ago)

On the eve of a comeback, one of rap's most colorful characters, Ol' Dirty Bastard, aka Russell Jones, collapsed and died this afternoon in a Manhattan recording studio. He was 35, but just two days shy of his 36th birthday.

Jones was pronounced dead at 5:04 p.m., said Ellen Borakove, a spokeswoman for the city medical examiner's office. An autopsy will be conducted Sunday, she said.

Police sources said Jones, one of the founding members of Staten Island's Wu-Tang Clan, was in 36 Records LLC at 545 W. 34th St. just after 4:30 p.m. when he complained he was having difficulty breathing and collapsed.

An ambulance arrived minutes later and EMS workers raced to the fifth-floor loft, which includes the recording studio and an adjacent area with a living room and kitchen. Jones, who had collapsed in the living-room area opposite a pool table, could not be resuscitated.

A police source at the scene said no drug paraphernalia was found.

Tonight, outside the recording studio on 34th Street, about 30 grim-faced mourners -- including bandmates Ghostface Killah and Raekwon -- entered the building. Just after 8:30 p.m., Jones' body was removed and placed in an ambulance.

"This ain't no joke. This is real life, just like if you lose your mother, your brother. This is real life," said Ghostface Killah, who spoke with those assembled outside.

"It's a big loss. It's a big loss right now. I knew him for 20 years. He was my brother, heart, soul, pride and joy."

On Friday night, Jones had appeared at a concert at Continental Airlines Arena in the Meadowlands, Wu-Tang Clan's first East Coast appearance in five years. The nine-member group had burst on the rap scene in 1993 with their album, "Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)." The group recently released a CD featuring a few new songs as well as some old releases.

Jones, who was born in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, had much success with Wu-Tang Clan in the early 1990s, then went solo in the mid-90s and released two successful albums. He also recorded duets with Mariah Carey and Macy Gray.

Since November 1997, he had had a series of run-ins with the law, stints in rehabilitation and rumors of mental illness.

That year he was arrested for failing to pay nearly a year's worth of child support for three children he had with his wife, Icelene Jones. He ultimately fathered 13 children.

At the 1998 Grammy Awards, ODB took the stage and interrupted Shawn Colvin's acceptance speech to complain that Wu-Tang Clan hadn't won. The group had not been nominated in that particular category.

In another notorious episode, the rapper in 2000 eluded a court-mandated rehab stay, becoming the music world's most famous fugitive. He was nabbed at a McDonald's restaurant when the arresting officer recognized the rapper because her son was a fan.

tragic. :'( i haven't felt this way since left eye died, so much shit was heaped onto the two of them and then they just DIE. not a particularly profound observation, but it's so heartbreaking. dirty was signed to the roc before he even got out of prison and the guy was just despair personified, he had no confidence or self-respect at all and ppl all around were exploiting him constantly. not to mention the falling out with Rza/wu tang, none of whom seemed to give a fuck about him. and jesus christ, do you know how many kids the dude had?? Sterling Clover (s_clover), Sunday, 14 November 2004 05:56 (twenty-one years ago)

now THIS is an obit:
...I remember that day in particular of all the times I was at Greek Fest because Ol' Dirty was straight wildin'. I cant front I have to tell you this, and im going to tell it like I would if we were having a drink and not as if I am writing a news story because this is about Dirty. Yo, Dirty had a bottle of some sh*it in his hands, drinking it and was wilding and having fun. Unforgettable. He was walking around talking sh!t in the backstage area which was just a sectioned off area on the side of the stage. There were VIP cars and some vans like the Boot Camp Click van that was there.

So Dirty jumps on top of a car and is bugging out standing on the roof of the car screaming at cats drinking and doing his thing...Yo, he was having fun doing his thing and thats what I remember most. He was a free spirit . But anyway, long story short security and the police came like 20 minutes into it, handcuffed and arrested him right in front of us. I will never forget that day.

I'm kind of upset that so much of his potential career was wasted in prison, on charges that were kind of bullshit. Wasn't he only sent to jail for so long because of an accumulation of minor offenses? Now in this aftermath does it become clear how the system can literally waste a life away. Part of me is thinking that he wouldn't be dead now if he hadn't been in prison for so long. He essentially died the day he was sentenced. The liveliness and vibrancy he once possessed was never to return after that point.

The saddest thing that this day officially marks is that Wu-Tang is pretty much over. Any future reunions after this point just won't be the same.

billstevejim, Sunday, 14 November 2004 07:10 (twenty-one years ago)

oh man this is sad. a major talent, a major spirit, a major joy.

but, billstevejim, let's not blame this one on the system. odb did a damn good job of killing himself. dude was a mess. and while there's little doubt his time would have been better served getting some kind of help instead of in prison, it's not as if he wasn't a mess long before he got to prison.

man. i was just talking about ODB a few hours ago with pete nolan and daniel d. (who just saw wu tang last night) at WPRB. i was hoping that he would do another solo album as classic as "nigga please" or "return to the 36 chambers."

rest in peace.

My understanding is that his unwillingness to stay in rehab and show up for court dates is what landed him in prison.

Good luck to his 13 kids, who he failed to pay child support to.

It's funny how he's being lionized here, because he made some good music. Nevermind his considerable rap sheet and unfortunate parenting approach.

stevie nixed (stevie nixed), Sunday, 14 November 2004 13:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Man, this is sad. I like ODB's first album about as much as any album from the 90s....Ni99a Please was also just stunning....it always reminded me of Funhouse by the Stooges, just this deathride through drug psychosis.....

The sad thing to me about this death is that now he'll be remembered more for the "THAT Ni99a's CRAZY" image more than the music (although I guess he let his persona and tribulations overshadow his music so he's as much as fault as anybody.....I was pretty sure this new Roc-A-Fella album was going to suck).....Some thoughts on ODB the artist:

1) He was a GREAT rapper. Not just crazy or erratic. The way he said things was just COOL....Lots of people on ILM and government names and stuff have made me take notice of how I've always underrated southern rappers by being too focused on trad. NYC Rakim lyricism and not FLOW....ODB was too great to just be fucking around, the way he would dart in and out of the beat and then let loose those great exclamation/singing/bellowing "introducing the ghost face KIIIIIIIIILLLAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH - noonecouldgetillah!" type parts....But I've read before lots of the Wu-Tang guys saying back in the day he was one of the better straight up rappers in the Clan, you can even here some of this on "Damage" on the first album...sort of an artifact.....But yeah I guess he was more like E-40 really than any NYC rapper.....Old Busta maybe but Busta let his flow turn into this real constipated, over articulated pile of yuck....Even if ODB was just going off the head most of the time, shit then he had a great knack for saying just amazing nonsequiters...I mean, you go dick around in the studio and see if you come up with thanking the Eskimos and the Army Navy Airforce and Marines, play this on them boats, this is travellin music....great lyrics.

2) ODB really brought out the best in the RZA. RZA is great yeah but sometimes he gets too gothy and tends to fall back on his own schtick way too much, or at least increasingly since maybe Cuban Linx....but on ODB records he seemed to let loose a bit, get a little funkier and sillier.

3) honestly, I'm sure the drugs were beginning to take their toll, but whatever his lifestyle he was still one of the only artists that felt genuinely like he was going out on a ledge everytime he stepped in the booth.....honestly exciting and as "risky" as any noise improv type shit.....

So anyway ODB, sorry you were a fuck up and a drug addict and I'm sorry you died. I really liked your records. Hope you're doing better now.

that crew was for a vh1 special, called something like "on parole with ODB," chronicling life after prison. it was really sad. he looked lost, lonely and completely unaffected by any attempts at rehab. it was the kind of special you almost hope they won't show again as a tribute.

Not to be all judgemental or anything, but the guy was a scumbag, right? I take it we are missing the music more than the artist himself here.

the charges filed against him were largely non-violent, as allmusic.com rightly points out. his primary victim was probably himself (and, admittedly, the mothers of his 13 children). but he was a fucked up mental patient and drug abuser more than a ruthless psycho. i mean, his ... erm ... untraditional behaviour kinda tells us that, doesn't it? "wu-tang is for the children" etc. anyway, sorry to see you go, odb. the world isn't made for you kind and your kind isn't made for the world, i guess.

"Not to be all judgemental or anything, but the guy was a scumbag, right? I take it we are missing the music more than the artist himself here"

In Brooklyn back around 1995 or so, a couple undercover NYPD officers came up to a young student sitting in a car and pumped a few bullets into his head. It was brushed under the rug, but the kid had no arrest record, was not doing anything illegal at the time, and had nothing illegal on him.

In the aftermath I went to a community speak out and march. It wasn't a huge turn out - maybe about 50 community folks from the mostly black community of Flatbush.

Anyway, ODB was invited to speak, and he showed with a female friend. He spoke very eloquently and forcefully about the need for the community to defend itself, and he denounced the cops.

He didn't seem like a scumbag at all, and he was very respectful of every one there. It was soon after, that he began to have much trouble with the law. So, I guess I've always harbored this notion that he made enemies with the local police, and they targeted him.

Locally, it was publicized that ODB was friendly with some community activists of a Black Nationalist/Revolutionary bent.

I can understand how people may think of him as a scumbag for his long criminal record, or whatever. But I've always remained suspect of the press coverage.

Don't presume that I'm witholding that info smart guy, I honestly didn't know that. But thanks for "correcting" the record. I don't know what else is in dispute, but I'm pretty sure it is not illegal to be sitting in a stolen vehicle.

In any case, ODB didn't retreat from speaking out on behalf of victims of police brutality in his own borough.

pheNAM (pheNAM), Monday, 15 November 2004 01:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Since I also live in Flatbush, I take the time to get the details straight. No quotes needed around the word "correcting" since that's what I did. Even the most pro-Watson site (and there's every reason to believe he shouldn't have been shot) will mention the fact that the car was stolen. It's a pretty big detail to not know, for someone who went to a community rally. Whether ODB gets bonus points for speaking out, I can't say. A lot of people were up in arms about it.

dlp9001, Monday, 15 November 2004 01:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait isn't this the guy who got shot some 20 odd times and then the police screwed around and decided to not maintain the crime scene and then the grand jury didn't charge them (yet AGAIN). And the biggest deal to you is making sure that the fact that the car he was stepping into (completely unarmed!) was a stolen one?!?! You have weird priorities.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 15 November 2004 02:00 (twenty-one years ago)

That's hardly my biggest priority. Read what was said about him above: "innocent student innocent baby jesus not doing anything helping nuns" or something like that. I can't remember the exact phrasing.

dlp9001, Monday, 15 November 2004 02:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, I understand. You are the kind of guy who can't stand to see someone who was unnecessarily shot many many times proclaimed to be "innocent" when in fact he was really getting into a stolen car and therefore not innocent at all. I'm glad there are crusaders like you around who can find incredibly salient facts like this and bring them to the attention of the ignorant masses. Thanks.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 15 November 2004 02:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not trying to hear what's going on right above me. I just came to say that the video for "Got Your Money" with the cheesy little cutout of a floating ODB's head singing superimposed on some blaxploitation footage with Kelis standing there singing backup, and most of all, the funk band in the club with the matching white jumpsuits/pantsuits/overalls (what were they wearing?) was the best video I ever saw.

No, I'm someone who lives in the neighborhood where this happened, doesn't like police brutality, but also doesn't like people to whitewash the facts. Not sure why that's such a hard concept. There's such a thing as shades of grey, and not everyone who gets wrongly shot by the cops has to be a saint.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 00:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Just not right.

I only found out last night when I flipped to MTV Base, who were doing an hour of awesome tracks on which he'd rapped, with an RIP note under their logo. Shed a couple tears. It took me the whole hour to find out the circumstances as Base were scrolling notes about his life on the screen during each song. Totally gutted, that's both 'Coldblooded' singers gone this year (Chappelle connection indeed). I can honestly say that Dirty was one of my musical heroes without any reservations, hesitations or caveats. I put Nigga Please on before going to sleep but had to switch it off eventually. Rest in peace, Dirt Dog.

"While we wouldn't recommend than anyone haphazardly spread their seed (and Jones did have his fair share of legal trouble over failure to pay child support), he should at least be given props for recognizing his paternity. Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 18 November 2004 06:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Where is that from? The tag says it's a Wu-Tang B-side/unreleased cd, so is it a B-Side, or is it unreleased? Anyway, it's fantastic - I might play it this weekend, depending on many factors.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Thursday, 18 November 2004 07:44 (twenty-one years ago)

As I understand it, this track is from an R+B tribute album for Phil COllins.
I shit you not.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 18 November 2004 07:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I soulsought it ages ago, all I know is the tag that says it's from a compilation of Wu rarities. Good innit?

'NEW' OL' DIRTY BASTARD ALBUM ON THE WAY

The first posthumous OL’ DIRTY BASTARD album will be released in January.

But fans need not worry that Tupac-style vultures are already descending on the late rapper’s estate. The mixtape ‘Osirus’ was completed a month ago and always intended as New Year release.

The mix features 14 exclusive new tracks with a galaxy of producers including DJ Premier, The Heatmakers, Dame Grease, Chops and K-Def.

Human beatbox Rahzel from The Roots – currently working with former Faith No More mainman Mike Patton – also guests alongside Inspektah Deck, Killer Mike and Baby Sham.

‘Osirus’ will be released in the US on December 21, and in the UK on January 25. The UK version will, however, feature bonus track ‘Move Back’.

The tracklisting is:

* ’Rahzel Intro’
* ’Pop Shots’ (Wu Tang)
* ’Go Go Go’
* ’Fuck Y’All’
* ’Out Of Control’
* ’Stand Up’
* ’Run Dirty Run’
* ’Who Can Make It Happen Like Dirt?’
* ’High In The Clouds’
* ’Fire’
* ’Pussy Keep Calling’
* ’Down South’ feat Killer Mike
* ’Untitled’
* ’Caked Up’ feat Baby Sham
* ’If Y’All Want War’ feat Ghostface and Royal Flush
* Rahzel Skit

one month passes...
I guess this should be mentioned:

An autopsy of rapper Ol' Dirty Bastard reveals his death by heart attack was due to "intoxication by the combined effects of cocaine and [the painkiller] Tramadol," according to Grace Burgess, a spokeswoman for the New York City medical examiner's office.
Born Russell Jones, O.D.B. died on November 13th after collapsing suddenly in a New York recording studio just days short of his thirty-sixth birthday.

The wild card of the nine-man Wu-Tang Clan, at the time of his death, O.D.B. had completed a two-year prison sentence for a drug possesion and had been working towards his fourth solo album and Roc-A-Fella Records debut. Osirus, an album recorded during the rapper's last six months, will be released January 4th on JC Records, a label recently formed by his mother Cherry Jones and manager Jarred Weisfeld. A reality TV show, Stuck On Dirty, which wrapped filming in the weeks before O.D.B.'s death, will debut on Spike TV in early 2005.

O.D.B. is survived by mother, his wife and a reported thirteen children.

The Osirus album is really good! Especially "Dirty Dirty."

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

really...? I'm suspicious. I never got that record that came out while he was in prison, with all those guest spots and collabs and remixes and whatnot.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 21 December 2004 20:45 (twenty-one years ago)

That record was really awful. This new one is more like his first solo album, the two highlights of the album for me are clearly going for a "Shimmy Shimmy Ya" sort of thing.

"He was a powerful general
the smell from his breath was Ballantine
I think it was the year 89
He stayed the freshest
Polo boots
Wallys with the colorful logos
He was comin' from Medina, we'd boost
up in A&S, slippin' and dippin'
The Bedstuy native
He used to beatbox
thousands would listen

Yo that was before the Wu got on
him and Allah, Just, and RZA
came to the Island one morn
nigga could dance to slow music
outdrink any nigga on the benches
while we hittin' reefer, he so loose
5 foot 7, a legend was born
Russell Ason Jones
I know him for his braids and lessons

A wise man with knowledge, 120
kept a flag on his chest
with his right hand
quick servin' you Remy
Yo let's toast to the fallen
lost, forgotten
Yo, if niggas can hear me
Roll up some broccoli

Ason, the heart of a lion
purified mind
the way he did it with a mic and some wine
I would never forget the days we would sit back
days I be all up in the crib, listenin'
holdin' a line
And yep
I just miss this nigga
And now I understand the meaning of love
when I kiss the nigga

hmmm some of it is kinda depressing, some of the post jail (i think?) stuff he sounds kinda gruff and he's kinda bitter and gangsta sounding just gun talk and money talk, kinda grim tone that feel so "standard" for ODB
