What is Magda like?

I've never seen her and might this week. Is she similar to Hawtin?

james jung, Tuesday, 21 December 2004 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

She's similar in the sense that they both like to play dark, minimal stuff, but as DJ's they're very different. Magda basically just plays the records, her mixing is clean, but then again she tends to stick to one style. There's not nearly as much going on as Hawtin's kitchen sink approach.

Her track selection is awesome, though, but how could it not be considering who she hangs out with? Still, she plays great stuff.

I last saw her 18 months ago, so I'm not certain that all my comments are still representative of her.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm seeing her spin tomorrow night at Subtonic! I know nothing about her but my friend says she's boffo

W i l l (common_person), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

as am I Will. I've heard she plays minimal and groovey.

james jung, Tuesday, 21 December 2004 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

By the way, this was awesome. I couldn't tell you what tracks she spun because I don't have much depth, but it sounded great. Chunky dropped-change sounds, clicks, synths. And Subtonic is a cool space.

W i l l (common_person), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...
you all make it sound so civilized. when i saw magda, marc houle and troy pierce, they took the room and shook it like a snow globe for six hours

fe zaffe (fezaffe), Monday, 28 March 2005 23:19 (twenty years ago)

two months pass...
I really want to see this lady spin. I've been listening to quite a few mixes I downloaded off Soulseek recently and she just seems so different to anyone else out. I only think I've recognised two or three tracks out of about 24 hours of mixes, where does she get all her stuff from?

I want Names, I want Labels!

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 09:06 (twenty years ago)

yeah, when i saw her in SF last i didn't recognize a single goddamn thing. it's like she's tapped some hidden vein of really micro tracks that i thought people stopped making a couple years back - and plays'em in a way so that they actually sound really exciting again.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 12:24 (twenty years ago)

from what i read, magda, houle and troy play self-produced tracks in final scratch that will never be pressed on vinyl

fe zaffe (fezaffe), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 12:52 (twenty years ago)

That would 'splain things.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

I adore her Proton radio mix from 3-3-03. anyone have it? the track that comes in at 7:00 (maybe starts earlier but that's when the uh main riff kicks in)-- is that one of her unreleased goodies or is it a track that got by me?

W i l l (common_person), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 17:39 (twenty years ago)

she plays a lot of heartthrob's stuff.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 18:36 (twenty years ago)

She's GOOD!

Semaphore Burns (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 14:10 (twenty years ago)

When did she play SF??? :(

Semaphore Burns (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 14:10 (twenty years ago)

I like "The Black Room" a lot. Dark! Minimal!

Semaphore Burns (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr *shakes*

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

Magda played SF a couple months back with Matt Dear, and yes, regarding fe zaffe's statements, you're right: Marc Houle makes about 10 new tracks everyday, most of which are never intended as anything more than transitions for magda's and troy's DJ sets.

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

What's "The Black Room"?

W i l l (common_person), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

It's on this.

Semaphore Burns (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

Oh, sweet!

W i l l (common_person), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

she was great at sonar. troy just seemed to press a sort of reverb button every so often. marc houle was awesome as well.

saw magda and hawtin at sankeys soap recently. she was way better than him, but i think she was just playing records rather than doing her exclusive "whatthefuck" stuff....

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

this is a great mix. thanks!

tricky (disco stu), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 02:28 (twenty years ago)

Still haven't seen her... She is playing with Troy Pierce and Anwar down in Brighton in February next year though... I'll remind people nearer the time!

That would be making the tea.

LOL.

On holiday for that Fabric date... But I always much prefer seeing people in my home town rather than London... more intimate!

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Monday, 3 October 2005 10:43 (twenty years ago)

she is cute and interesting.

she might be playing leeds?

Hawtin's kitchen sink approach I need more Hawtin sets.

Magda and Matthew Dear play Air in Tokyo this Saturday. Should be rockin'...

Good Dog (Good Dog), Thursday, 13 October 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

I'm listening to a set now. She really likes the 303, ne?

Good Dog (Good Dog), Thursday, 13 October 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)

Okay, so if you asked me at the moment who I would like to see play out in SF, I would say:

1. Magda
2. Villalobos
3. Recloose
4. Nathan Fake

Two of these (inc. Mag) are here in the next two weeks and I might not be able to seee either!!!!

:(

Anyway, I learnt from tricky on the SF thread that Magda is playing at Rx this Saturday.

I heard another of her sets, and it seemed far better than the one I mentioned here. Any consensus on a really good set to download?

Also the samples of her new 12" on Boomkat sound bloody fantastic!

Oh Oh Oh Oh Ah (fandango), Friday, 16 December 2005 20:15 (twenty years ago)

I didn't go and see her and I feel stupid.

[jailhouse tattoo] (nordicskilla), Friday, 16 December 2005 21:01 (twenty years ago)

This year I didn't go see AGF + Pansonic (& more) and it wasn't even that far away... didn't go to this festival on a boat in the UK with Monolake, Autechre, Fennesz, Pansonic (again, forgetting who else plated). Didn't go to Lowlands in Holland (too many to list but Michael Mayer and Ellen Allien for two :-O) didn't sell my ticket on in time either(!). Not driving is a factor in some of these, but yeah, I'm really bad at this kind of thing too.

Made one festival and a couple of small gigs this year in the end, but hardly satisfied with that.

Making plans for January to make up for this silliness already.

Oh Oh Oh Oh Ah (fandango), Friday, 16 December 2005 21:09 (twenty years ago)

where do you live, Oh Oh Oh Oh Ah?

[jailhouse tattoo] (nordicskilla), Friday, 16 December 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

England, :/ or :) depending on your cynicism

Also missed Rex The Dog & Tomas Andersson... cos I really wanted to have a good bonfire night. Don't regret that though, the bonfire was awesome & huge & there was drinking :D

I quite like the CD. Need to hear it some more. Magda playing on Sunday night too at City Hall.

if so, why the fuck does she have to be playing there???? that place stinks!!!!! but i'll go anyway.

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 10:35 (nineteen years ago)

three weeks pass...
On first listen I am liking "Dancing Machine" more than Transitions, mainly cause it's sounding more like Luciano's Sci-Fi Hi-Fi mix than yer standard M_nus fare.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Tuesday, 11 July 2006 03:00 (nineteen years ago)

how the fuck is that mix so long? 71 tracks? what format? quadruple cd?

lf (lfam), Tuesday, 11 July 2006 03:45 (nineteen years ago)

There's only like 16 track markers and it runs 78 minutes, in overlaying Closer To The Edit style.

listen her :)

fandango (fandango), Saturday, 5 August 2006 15:23 (nineteen years ago)

This is nowhere NEAR as arresting as her live sets :(

It's by no means bad, but it's a goddamn shame.

fandango (fandango), Saturday, 5 August 2006 18:14 (nineteen years ago)

fucking million track mixes ugh.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 5 August 2006 18:21 (nineteen years ago)

the million track mix kinda makes sense in a way ... i mean, now that programs like Ableton make it so easy to just throw a beat matched mix together, artists have to go the extra mile and do something that those programs can't ... like mass orchestrate a million track mix.

not that that isn't obvious, but i feel like someone should say it.

besides, i think this mix is rad! although, i disagree with MFG's comment that it is more akin to Luciano's recent mix than standard M-nus fare. there is SO much more going on here than on either of those ... this mix is all over the place. it's kinda crazy.

Cameron Octigan (Cameron Octigan), Monday, 7 August 2006 20:26 (nineteen years ago)

I still don't love this.

fandango (fandango), Monday, 7 August 2006 20:36 (nineteen years ago)

I agree with ronan, million track mixes are just an attempt by the dj to make him or herself more relevant.

where is the continuity or story or even dare I say it the hook?

hector (hector), Monday, 7 August 2006 20:43 (nineteen years ago)

when I play a record I usually think "ah yes, now I can listen to this record"

I mean ok I see the conceptual value blah blah records as tracks and all but seriously I can't get over some tiny feeling of records needing to be songs, even if pretty much everything I buy is a track and I argue to the hilt for the anonymity of the same.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 7 August 2006 21:11 (nineteen years ago)

I sort of think the million track mix stigma is a bit of a red herring here, you can't really tell most of the track delineations on the Magda mix.

Cameron: I agree it isn't so much like the Luciano mix, the comparison came from my first impression when I was expecting this mix to be much flatter, with less of a percolating bounce.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 7 August 2006 21:20 (nineteen years ago)

Something about that quick mixing really bugs me, fundamentally, it's like all these records just chewed up and spat out, they might as well not be records, does that then by definition mean the DJ has created something of their own? Not IMO.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 7 August 2006 21:26 (nineteen years ago)

Michael that sounds promising - I don't tend to like Minus stuff much but love Cadenza/Vakant/Mobilee/Einmaleins bouncy house minimalism - is this mix closer to the former than the latter?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 7 August 2006 21:28 (nineteen years ago)

xpost - to be fair Magda hasn't done a DE9|3 here and claimed that any of these are her own creative work. I actually recognise TONS of this btw, even if I don't know the track names.

My main beef is it just isn't anywhere near energetic, or jacking enough (fourth gear, fourth gear!!) that 15 jahre groove set upthread just smokes this. And it really isn't even all that different sonically. This risks becoming a novelty, even though there are plenty of successful BITS (the disco, the bizzare morph-into-schaffel etc) overall it stays too constant, and it falls in and out of gripping you it's a mix for chin-stroking, for "listening" but not for the floor. Falls between stools for me.

Ronan do you like... Jeff Mills?

fandango (fandango), Monday, 7 August 2006 21:35 (nineteen years ago)

No! I never did really like Jeff Mills.

M_nus is a funny one for me, I listen to all their releases and think hmm, there's something a bit vapid about them though, does anyone else get that? Like empty technical precision.

Except "Seeing Through Shadows" which is one of my favourites this year for certain. But then Loco Dice is so not an M_nus artist.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 7 August 2006 21:38 (nineteen years ago)

Tim theres a streaming link upthread - What is Magda like?

This is like minimal porridge somehow, because of the unfortunately steady BPMs... tho' I gotta say for all the hatin' I'm still listening to it!

I dunno, for me I just see this as another technique, like wild EQ-ing, even if this mix isn't the best defence for it.

I'm a little unsure about a lot of m_nus too yeah, it gets very plastic on it's own but I gotta say SOME empty technical precision is worth it, like sitting in Polar Park in the sun and someone playing "25 Bitches" at four in the afternoon! Wow :O

It's definitely a very different vibe to "minimal" than the old hardcore stuff, or the baroque Villalobos stuff. I can understand why it gets accused of being glamorous (it is!).

fandango (fandango), Monday, 7 August 2006 21:46 (nineteen years ago)

x-post Did anyone here like Get Physical Vol. II? A comp that had too many tracks on it, of which many I recognized but left me on the whole unsatisfied. Just when I would start to love something it would get cut off. It would seem that optimally Magda's mix could only do something similarly or it could trasform itself into an hour long continually shifting track.

Granted I have not heard it so it could blow me away somehow, but that is how I see it playing out.

I do like a bit of minus by the way. There were several good tracks on the last comp.

hector (hector), Monday, 7 August 2006 21:48 (nineteen years ago)

"M_nus is a funny one for me, I listen to all their releases and think hmm, there's something a bit vapid about them though, does anyone else get that? Like empty technical precision. "

Not enough good basslines! And just generally not enough thought going into atmosphere or melody - too minimal! I don't want to here an interestingly programmed rhythm loop just by itself.

"Seeing Through Shadows" is the opposite of all of this, which is why it's so great.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 7 August 2006 21:49 (nineteen years ago)

Although I have a Troy Pierce live set that I quite like, when it's at its most Trentemoller-ish in the evil atmospherics stakes.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 7 August 2006 21:50 (nineteen years ago)

It doesn't sound glamorous to me, more kind of, like gym music for solar panelled houses, "we have evolved beyond human emotion now, this music has shed the flab of character".

haha, but yeah I do often think "this is good" when listening to M_nus but I never buy them. Then you hear producers like Konrad Black (whom I can't praise highly enough)or somebody doing stuff which feels like M_nus but with a really pervasive character to it, darkness I guess. M_nus is just kinda.......there, Troy Pierce really guilty of this IMO.

x-post yes non existent basslines, no sense of dub

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 7 August 2006 21:51 (nineteen years ago)

oh snap

JABBA JABBA!! NIB NIB!! (vahid), Monday, 7 August 2006 21:54 (nineteen years ago)

ronan correct, this will just glide by you w/o you noticing

JABBA JABBA!! NIB NIB!! (vahid), Monday, 7 August 2006 21:55 (nineteen years ago)

The lack of character, almost anti-dub (you're not going to feel drawn down into the non-existent depths of a m_nus record) sound about then is exactly what they're going for I think!

It's just a contrast IMO, total wank if overused but a little goes a LOOONG way.

fandango (fandango), Monday, 7 August 2006 21:57 (nineteen years ago)

I find it highly odd how the 12"s are supposed to be about creating *space* in the mix and these Mix CD's are the TOTAL OPPOSITE, filling every little second with some detail or other until it all gets much too fussy unless you're "tuned in" (strokes imaginary beard).

fandango (fandango), Monday, 7 August 2006 21:59 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not a huge Minus fan eiter Tim but this grabbed me much more immediately than Transitions or the recent Houle/Pierce stuff. It does lean a bit more towards the Cadenza/etc stuff, in that the beats and basslines are beefier, there are discernable vocal samples, and overall it has a more aggressive sound.

That said, Fandango is sort of OTM that the mix in whole meanders a bit too long at one constant level (which is ironic considering it has 71 tracks!)

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 7 August 2006 22:03 (nineteen years ago)

Basslines are the hook, the meat. Yea agree with the troy pierce assessment. Really liked that berg nixon and particularly the baby kate track

Not enough good basslines! And just generally not enough thought going into atmosphere or melody - too minimal! I don't want to here an interestingly programmed rhythm loop just by itself.

Very OTM, which is why the Magda mix sort of surprised me by actually having constant basslines.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 7 August 2006 22:08 (nineteen years ago)

It doesn't sound glamorous to me, more kind of, like gym music for solar panelled houses, "we have evolved beyond human emotion now, this music has shed the flab of character".

But blankness can be glamourous! Electroclash?

fandango (fandango), Monday, 7 August 2006 22:16 (nineteen years ago)

we have evolved beyond human emotion rancid house cliches now, this music has shed the flab of character instant familiarity prole appeal

JABBA JABBA!! NIB NIB!! (vahid), Monday, 7 August 2006 23:05 (nineteen years ago)

surely "human emotion" is not a house cliché? I mean it can be mean or sinister or non housey, just not bland technology music.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 09:34 (nineteen years ago)

The lack of character, almost anti-dub (you're not going to feel drawn down into the non-existent depths of a m_nus record) sound about then is exactly what they're going for I think!.

Maybe, but i still stand by my "Transistions is a dub album" claim.

The Magda mix (I'm on the Luisterpaal right now), I dunno, I need this stuff once in awhile (mixed, other than the Plastikman albums I don't see the point of these m-nus tracks as stand-alone tracks.)

Omar (Omar), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 18:02 (nineteen years ago)

i still stand by my "Transistions is a dub album" claim.

Yeah, I totally wouldn't extend that (barely thought through) comment about 'anti-dub' re: individual m_nus tracks to the mixes!

I need this stuff too! I DO actually like this mix you know (might even buy it). It's quite rubbery & fun. Just a smidge dissapointed it's been engineered to be so bloody restrained and Hawtin-esque (though not quite that extreme!) it sort of ends up "just another" CD in this vein when I was hoping for it to break away from that trend of quirky, but a little polite.

fandango (fandango), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 09:26 (nineteen years ago)

when I was hoping for it to break away from that trend of quirky

True. I was hoping for the same really.

De Luisterpaal is jamming at track 17, I was hoping for some gear change after that. ;)

This really reveals itself after 3 or 4 lessons. And there most certainly are basslines galore. I love it. It's cold, but not as cold as, say Luciano's hifiscifi mix, which is just *not fun.*

paulhw (paulhw), Saturday, 16 September 2006 23:36 (nineteen years ago)

Scifihifi is great until after the adam beyer track where it loses it totally...

I'm totally come round on this mix btw... except that I still think she's better (more danceable) IRL .

She's a dancing machine is really good. Yeah, I'm a bit late to the party. DE9 transitions really grew on me after a while but this brings (roughly) the same M_nus, ableton'd to fuck, transitiony minimal but like +10 fun.

MISSING: Magda's Record Bag

What is going on in the world today!?! First Matthew Dear's hard drive (which incidentally was returned by the guilt party after feeling a bout of remorse), now Magda's record bag. I mean hey, I realize we're in a recession but really?!?! Have people really sunk this low of late? What ever happened to PLUR!

From Magda: On Saturday night, my laptop bag was stolen from Centrum Club in Erfurt. We as djs and artists dedicate our entire energy and spirit to what we do. We work very hard to present music in our own special way. There is no better feeling than knowing that you and the people on the dancefloor are completely connected and knowing that we can share that feeling of excitement from hearing a new special track. In the end, we are not there to play for ourselves but for the people who support us and our music. I am deeply sad and disappointed to know that something like this could happen, especially in the dj booth, the one place where things should be safe. I feel like I have been stripped of the one thing that is closest to my heart. We are all in this together and we must respect each other, otherwise there is no point.

help me find one good magda set. all sets i've heard from her are either boring or mediocre.

Good luck with that.

If everything you've heard has been boring/mediocre, why keep looking? There's probably holy grails out there better than those of Magda.

Because I absolutely adore her looks :(

I'm really liking her RA podcast, but I hear that's nothing like she normally plays...

anyone else feeling it?

my opinionation (Hamildan), Thursday, 22 July 2010 15:00 (fifteen years ago)

really, really like it. Don't know a thing about her, but the mix smooths through a bunch of textures that shouldn't fit so nicely together.

bendy, Thursday, 22 July 2010 16:41 (fifteen years ago)

Mite check that RA mix out as all the mixes ive heard from her have been pretty dull
