10th January 2005

The three piece rock band known as mclusky have disbanded, as of friday january 7th, 2005.

The reason for this parting is private, though probably not as entertaining as you'd imagine.

Personally, I would like to thank all the people, places and times that occured on or near us.

I`m grateful for the love and to to a lesser degree, the hate. There'll be more music soon, from all of us.

Regards.

falco

*sigh*

Damn

Great live band, great records.

i'm glad i have those first two e.ps now.

Really sad news this, they were great last month supporting Shellac.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Monday, 10 January 2005 12:17 (twenty years ago)

bugger, that's a real shame. they were a mighty wee band.

Interesting choice with the head-to-face hair combo on that one.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 10 January 2005 13:38 (twenty years ago)

motherfucking fucker. i didnt even get to see them.

peter smith (plsmith), Monday, 10 January 2005 14:04 (twenty years ago)

you missed out, 'cos they rocked. i saw 'em twice: once at tut's in glasgow, then again last year at ATP. they were good at ATP but absolutely incendiary at tut's.

that said: their last album was badly flawed. they seemed to be trying too hard with every song; trying to force themselves to be something they weren't. perhaps the dynamic was wrong. whatever, i shall follow what andy falkous does with great interest.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 10 January 2005 14:10 (twenty years ago)

i really enjoyed their last album.

peter smith (plsmith), Monday, 10 January 2005 14:26 (twenty years ago)

Aw, I really wish that I had gone to see them when they played in NYC recently. I'll always regret that now.

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Monday, 10 January 2005 14:34 (twenty years ago)

I listened to "McLusky Do Dallas" a couple of times last week at work. Bummer.

earlnash, Monday, 10 January 2005 14:36 (twenty years ago)

So, farewell then, McLusky
Your song titles were more often better
Than your songs
And mostly longer too, though not as loud
I gave your last album to my friend
Kat
And she liked it

Dammit. Amazing live band, for reasons that had a lot to do with the glowering tension between them on stage...

Douglas (Douglas), Monday, 10 January 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

'all of your friends are cunts' has to be one of the best opening lines of a song, ever.

hmmm (hmmm), Monday, 10 January 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

"an old singer is...a sex criminal" is one of my favorite singalong choruses

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 10 January 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

i was going to post my favourite couplet from "to hell with good intentions", but i couldn't pick one. so i'm posting the whole fucken thing.

genius, frankly. and all set to one of the most searing post-punk riffs ever.

My love is bigger than your love
We take more drugs than a touring funk band
Sing it
My love is bigger than your love

Sing it

Shellac was touring last month?
I loved "Collagen Rock" and that recent single - "She Will Only Bring You Happiness" I think? It had a great video.

lemin (lemin), Monday, 10 January 2005 18:39 (twenty years ago)

the more i think about this, the more it saddens me. in 2003 i wrote that they were the best band in britain and i'd fight anyone who said differently. ok, that might have been a slight exaggeration, but they really did fire me up. i remember first hearing "to hell ..." (in 2002?) and being absolutely blown away by it.

bugger!

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 10 January 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

all their gear got stolen recently too, that might have also to them splitting up.

pinder (pinder), Monday, 10 January 2005 19:46 (twenty years ago)

maybe too pure will follow them out the door then. we can hope.

keith m (keithmcl), Monday, 10 January 2005 21:01 (twenty years ago)

As I understand, Falco and drummer Jack will still continue playing together, very possibly recording for Too Pure. So you may be disappointed, Keith

Jason J, Tuesday, 11 January 2005 00:17 (twenty years ago)

"an old singer is...a sex criminal" is one of my favorite singalong choruses

"our old singer is...a sex criminal" is an even better chorus.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 02:53 (twenty years ago)

also, drunk as I am right now, I have to say that Mclusky deserve way more recognition than they've had...their songs are overlooked diamonds of shouty pop.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 02:58 (twenty years ago)

The lyric is "our old singer is a sex criminal."

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Tuesday, 11 January 2005 03:02 (twenty years ago)

mark.j.h, Tuesday, 11 January 2005 10:52 (twenty years ago)

I dunno - from what I heard of them they sounded like Tripping Daisy. Only heard the one song though. What should I check?

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 10:55 (twenty years ago)

which song have you heard? start with "to hell with good intentions". if you don't fall in love, your ears are broken.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 11:08 (twenty years ago)

Falco is reporting on the forums that there will be a final release, a three disc effort featuring all the A sides, all the B sides, tons of live stuff (including the ULU show everyone talks about) and any remaining unreleased material.

It'll retail for the same price as the other albums "so you don't feel shafted".

Bless. < sniff >

I was at the ULU gig that apparently the live part of that new release is going to come from.

It's probably the best gig I've ever seen (competing in my mind against of all things Ulrich Schnauss in the back room of a pub in Cambridge, the Hidden Cameras at the late, lamented Boat Race, and a Mogwai end-of-tour show). I hope they leave in the absolute *demolishing* of a heckler Falco dished out...

go on, leave now, we know you've got to hurry home and tape Sex and the City

Quite frankly, I'm gutted. For the people who haven't heard any McLusky, "To Hell With Good Intentions", "Lightsabre Cocksucking Blues", "You Should Be Ashamed, Seamus", "Without MSG I Am Nothing", "World Cup Drumming"...

Andrew Walkingshaw, Tuesday, 11 January 2005 13:53 (twenty years ago)

There's a brief but comic interview with Falkous on Pitchfork's news page.

Jason J, Tuesday, 11 January 2005 14:19 (twenty years ago)

"some hilarious variation on 'Greatest Hits' is absolutely out of the fucking question."

Let's not forget the working title for "the difference between you and me..." was Mclusky Are Fucking Dead.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)

falco came out with a genius-level heckle at ATP last year. something about tories and home-owners. god damn, if only i hadn't melted my brain, i'd be able to remember. fuck.

anyone?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 14:36 (twenty years ago)

"Are there any tories here? [A couple of cheers] Congratulations on getting down here... without buying a house" or somesuch.

oh and I think we need one of these...

ledge (ledge), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

hardly one of falco's sharpest/wittiest moments, but repeatedly screaming "CHRIS MOYLES JUST PLEASE FUCKING DIE" over the end of 'dethink to survive' live for peel on radio one always raises a grin.

mark.j.h, Tuesday, 11 January 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

"This is a slow one. So if any of you have lighters... spark up a cigarette and enjoy it."

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

"the dance for this next song goes a bit like this. kind of like you're driving a really small car."

mark.j.h, Tuesday, 11 January 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

Somebody shouted 'sheep shagger' at him at this show I was at, and he carefully and politely explained that only one member of the band was Welsh, and he was from Newcastle, and suggested they develop more appropriate heckles 'perhaps related to shipping tariffs and the like'.

I always found the bassist kind of scary because of those mad spittle flecked vocals he'd do, but then it turns out he's this cute gangly nerdy guy who says things like 'I HURTED MY FINGER.'

I kind of lost interest in them after a while but I always wish the first album got more love, there's a lot of shrieky pop genius on that, and 'Medium Is The Message' is a better Pixies song that most actual Pixies songs and awesome driving music.

Also 'there's an eight per cent chance that you know Charles Dance and you're no damn friend of mine....DANNNNNNY BAKKKERRRRRRRRRR, DANNNNNY BAAAAAAAAAAKERRRRRRRRRRR...'

Ferg, Ah (Ferg), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

> I always found the bassist kind of scary because of those mad spittle

Who fixed his broken glasses at ATP by basically winding masking tape round his whole head. Including over the lenses of his glasses. That was pretty scary.

ledge (ledge), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

But awesome. It was the point at which the gig went off the tracks, and it was only about 10-15 minutes in.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 16:01 (twenty years ago)

The lyric is "our old singer is a sex criminal."

ah...wow that makes it even better.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 16:24 (twenty years ago)

at king tut's a couple of years back he leapt up, grabbed on to the low ceiling overhang above the stage, swung about for a bit then let go, crashing to the ground like a sack of spuds and obviously hurting himself hugely. he still managed to finish the set AND play an encore. i'll miss him.

I'll always remember where I was when mclusky split up. Thanks for the heads up Motti. Terrible news, I went out and bought do dallas on vinyl as soon as I heard about it and I intend to wear my mcluksy badge with pride for the forseeable future. Im so glad I made the effort to see them the 9 times in the past 2 years. Thanks Falco, Jon, Jack and anyone else associated with mclusky.

Just one request, there really should be some sort of final release or something what will happen to the many quality songs we know exist 'How To Spot A Record Company' for example.

Thankyou Malax. There will be a final release, which was due to be an interim one, hopefully a three disc set, a sides, b sides, and a final cd of live tracks (including from the ULU show) and unreleased/demo songs, probably over 50 songs in total. We hope to have it out for regular album price so nobody will feel shafted.

When i saw them in Exeter, the crazy bassist was manning the merch all by himself so i went a spoke to him and drank a bit. We talked about Steve Albini and why their t-shirts have to have swear words in them.

McLusky Do Dallas is one of the best albums ever made.

Also, to add a current bit of minutia, I think that Idles are the heir apparent to McLusky (not including Future of the Left). I spoke briefly to singer Joe Talbot briefly when they played Philly a year or two ago and mentioned this and he confirmed that at least one Idles member was a big fan.

I don’t think Idles are furious in the same way as Mclusky, and certainly don’t have the same dark humour.

michaellambert, Tuesday, 16 July 2019 16:20 (five years ago)

I'll let them know that they were wrong when they told me.

Oh, and no dark humor in Idles? Um, okay.

I’m sure they’ll be fascinated to hear someone disagrees with you on the internet.

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 21 July 2019 15:09 (five years ago)

the last minute and change of "Arming Eritrea" by FOTL is pretty much as good as rock music could ever be to me

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 21 July 2019 15:11 (five years ago)

YES to the Arming Eritrea song. That Future of the Left record is a powerhouse. There's a song towards the end, Drink Nike which is also a stunner.

kornrulez6969, Sunday, 21 July 2019 23:39 (five years ago)

Always had these down as a not quite as good 80s Matchbox. Are any of their albums as good as Horse Of The Dog?

Fried Egg Sandwich, Monday, 22 July 2019 12:25 (five years ago)

the 2nd and 3rd LPs are both solid, caustic, tight as fuck noise rock.

meaulnes, Monday, 22 July 2019 12:38 (five years ago)

I agree 'Do Dallas' is their best but 'The Difference' is the one I listen to most. It is indeed tight as fuck noise rock, but that slightlier poppy side on the 3rd gives it so much more.

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 22 July 2019 12:44 (five years ago)

I’m sure they’ll be fascinated to hear someone disagrees with you on the internet.
Or that several thousand people disagree with you.

That's not the royal "you" here. That's you.

Maybe you just suck at dark humor?

Loud guitars shit all over "Bette Davis Eyes" (NYCNative), Monday, 22 July 2019 19:19 (five years ago)

I didn’t say there was no dark humour, I said it wasn’t the same as mclusky. There’s a difference.

michaellambert, Monday, 22 July 2019 20:54 (five years ago)

So, by all means crack on, but you’re still wrong on the internet.

michaellambert, Monday, 22 July 2019 20:55 (five years ago)

And you're a fucking idiot on the internet.

your search screenshot makes that claim pretty ironic

bookmarkflaglink (jim in vancouver), Monday, 22 July 2019 23:09 (five years ago)

i'm a google search expert on the internet who would like to point out there's no way that 269,000 different web pages mention Idles the band, let alone 269,000 different pages that also mention their "dark humor"

this is page 3 of the same search query

As far as humour goes, Mclusky have the distinction of actually being funny, especially on a line-by-line basis.

vcrash, Monday, 22 July 2019 23:28 (five years ago)

four months pass...

Seeing them again tonight. By February it'll be three times in 6 months, which isn't bad for a band that split up 15 years ago.

US tour, fall 2022

global tetrahedron, Friday, 1 April 2022 22:04 (three years ago)

I saw them at a tiny venue in Atlanta . . . I can't remember when. Fifteen years ago? More? Anyway, they opened with "Lightsaber Cocksucking Blues," after which my friend and I were like, "You ready to go? Yeah, me too."

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Friday, 1 April 2022 22:07 (three years ago)

I'm guessing it was 2004. The opener was Yourcodenameis:Milo, who were touring for their first album.

No, these songs are being released digitally as a fund raisers for reapplying for US visas, I believe the plan is then to hopefully reschedule the US dates next yr

i don’t love the single but all the falkous projects have been pretty consistent and this version of the band is great live. I’m sure there’ll be some bangers on the album.

na (NA), Thursday, 13 February 2025 23:32 (four months ago)

agreed, long time fan but not fussed on this, production's really lacking too... i alighted the falco train when FOTL put out their sophomore.

na (NA), Monday, 19 May 2025 15:31 (one month ago)

It's super weird, I know they toured, or were going to tour America, but then cancelled, and then I guess rescheduled, but I have no idea when they actually came through town, or, assuming they did, why I didn't go. Oh well, I hope they come back.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 19 May 2025 15:51 (one month ago)

i saw them last march at the vic, great show
