I think the Foo Fighters album wins "worst". Mercury Rev and Trail of the Dead are second and third worst.

I think the Books sleeve, the Mu sleeve, the Justus Kohnkhe and New Order sleeves are all pretty good. In fact, I was going to include the Books sleeve in my round-up of album cover graphics for Design Observer, Fresh Fruit in Foreign Places, but I ended up concentrating on European labels.

I like the Dave Matthews cover, suprisingly elegant and not what I would have expected. The LCD Soundsytem works perfectly in the context of the record and New Order is fine, not classic New Order but still better than most. Incidentally the logo for the UK Meteorological Office internal magazine is in exactly the same style as the NO album.

I like the typeface, the peaceful matt fencepost green, the restraint and respect for nature. I like that they chose a simple typographic solution, with a line drawing. To me, the sleeve has the quiet decency of a 1950s book jacket design. The album itself has a similar tone of oblique despair at the way the world is right now—I see it as a very political record, made immediately after the election debacle of 2004—but instead of doing a RATM or PRML SCRM thing of condemning the present from the cutting edge of right now, they evoke (mainly through their use of samples) a more humanist past as a reproach to the present. And the sleeve fits with that.

Mightn't it be a reference to a rooster's comb? Mutsumi Kanamori makes rooster noises in "Paris Hilton" and dances like a rooster in the video. Also, a "coxcomb" is a man unmanned, and the knife she carries might be seen as a symbol of castration. Since Japanese females tend to get called "submissive", they chose this image to offset the stereotype, perhaps. Sort of "I'm a cock, not a hen!", perhaps? Or "I've come for your cock"? Or merely "I am a Japanese performance artist"...

In a way, the Books sleeve is the very opposite of the sleeve for XTRMNTR. Although the Primals' sleeve was critically lauded (Rick Poynor chose it as one of the best of the 90s in his "Communicate" design exhibition at the Barbican, for instance), I always thought there was something odd about the way the record was supposed to be an anti-war gesture, yet the sleeve totally bought into aggression-as-glamour (the sexy jet pilots donning their helmets). But I guess that's always been a paradox of the Scream, or indeed anyone who tries to rock inna humanist stylee inna Babylon an ting, when we all know that rock is "aggressive normality" itself, and the very clarion of Babylon.

The Noah's Ark one is absolutely dreadful (and, I'd imagine, almost as bad as the music it sheethes). I see the Bloc Party cover up there too....which I think is really quite nice, actually.

I think that 50 Cent cover is pretty cool; not as good as his previous one, yeah, but still looks good. It is kinda weird cover for a macho rapper though - all those patterns on the sides of it... If 50's gay, like some people seem to think, maybe there's a hidden code in it: "You know, I like floral decorations". Also, the outlines of his figure are blurring, that could be a symbol of an identity crisis - his sexual identity is blurred too.

everything else is pretty decent. i really love the photographs for kohnecke [sp?] and veirs -- its very quiet and beautiful.

slightly disturbed by the sheer amount of collage work thats passing for album covers this year, however.

Hmm, I think the covers you "get" (like the Bloodhound Gang one) at least serve their function, wheras that one offers no simple explanation at all for it's existence. Anyway, it's worth the worst album cover nomination for the ugly typography and bad photoshopping alone.
