Reviewer: Sir Potomus (Washington, DC) - See all my reviews (ex machina), Saturday, 29 January 2005 22:32 (twenty years ago)

I'm sorry. What's the step by step here? I go to the scroll down search for "popular music", type in "phantom", but there's no place I see that lets you rank it low to high in the search.

Brian Turner (btwfmu), Saturday, 29 January 2005 22:34 (twenty years ago)

Search for it first, then there should be a drop-down box that allows you to rank it low to high.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 29 January 2005 22:35 (twenty years ago)

There's a little pop-up menu right above the first result.

mrjosh (mrjosh), Saturday, 29 January 2005 22:35 (twenty years ago)

oh there we go

Reviewer: Sir Potomus (Washington, DC) - See all my reviews (ex machina), Saturday, 29 January 2005 22:36 (twenty years ago)

nope, there most definitely aint./

Brian Turner (btwfmu), Saturday, 29 January 2005 22:37 (twenty years ago)

Step by step:

1. Search "Popular Music" (left side of the screen) for "Phantom"
2. You will get about 23,000 results
3. Sort those results by "Price (Low To High)" (drop-down menu at center of screen).

It doesn't show up.

Jeff K (jeff k), Saturday, 29 January 2005 23:12 (twenty years ago)

Frankly, I'll be amazed if this works, and isn't just some screwup on Amazon's part, but I'm game...

Just ordered:
Plush- Fed
Primal Scream- Echo Dek
Serge Gainsbourg- No. 4
Super Furry Animals- Outspaced
Hot Butter- Popcorn
Yello- Zebra
Plaid- Spokes
Hang All DJ's, vol 1, 3, 4 and 5

And since I couldn't find any more that I wanted at the moment (started running into lots of out of stock items, and didn't want to wade through page after page of crap since I'd already gone through like 25 pages of Europe albums and import Nine Inch Nails interview CDs and whatnot) ordered a bunch of duplicates of the Plush and Soulwax albums to sell.

Telephone Thing, Saturday, 29 January 2005 23:15 (twenty years ago)

YAY

Reviewer: Sir Potomus (Washington, DC) - See all my reviews (ex machina), Saturday, 29 January 2005 23:34 (twenty years ago)

Just curious...can anyone come up with plausible theories as to just why this is happening? The best I can manage is that maybe some wholesaler is going out of business and trying to dump their stock, but that seems unlikely. I'm happy if it is, though, since the ebay revenue from duplicates could put me significantly closer to that Technics I've had my eye on, and getting the new Soulwax (on Japanese import, no less) for 99 cents is quite a bargain.

Plus I never would have bought the Hot Butter or, er, Europe albums otherwise (I swear to god the Europe is for a friend).

Telephone Thing, Saturday, 29 January 2005 23:35 (twenty years ago)

Merzbow, 24 Hours: A Day of Seals (Dirter Promotions, 2002)

What's this? Oh, another four-CD box from Merzbow, the most prolific artist in the known universe. I'd be more overjoyed if I could afford all the man's output (or if labels would send me review copies free). It's great stuff, but man, when you release another $15.99 CD every six weeks, the wallet starts to protest a bit.

Fifteen tracks spread over four discs.

Reviewer: Sir Potomus (Washington, DC) - See all my reviews (ex machina), Saturday, 29 January 2005 23:35 (twenty years ago)

everyone has to list what they got so we know where the good stuff is!! Out with it!

caspar (caspar), Saturday, 29 January 2005 23:37 (twenty years ago)

whats a good way of dumping your cart into human form?

Reviewer: Sir Potomus (Washington, DC) - See all my reviews (ex machina), Saturday, 29 January 2005 23:40 (twenty years ago)

well, I just highlighted the stuff in my cart after I bought it and cut out the availability and price lines.

caspar (caspar), Saturday, 29 January 2005 23:41 (twenty years ago)

looks like between page 450 and 500 the 99 cent stuff ends...

items 4500 to 5000

Reviewer: Sir Potomus (Washington, DC) - See all my reviews (ex machina), Saturday, 29 January 2005 23:44 (twenty years ago)

It was weird how there was that long spell of stuff being out of stock around items 600 - 800, I think.

W i l l (common_person), Saturday, 29 January 2005 23:45 (twenty years ago)

what is phantom records anyway?

fact checking cuz (fcc), Saturday, 29 January 2005 23:50 (twenty years ago)

I think it's a distributor/wholesaler in the UK. A lot of the stuff I bought was Japanese import CDs with bonus tracks or in fancy limited-edition packaging. The Iggy "3 Originals" thing is a slipcase containing Soldier, Party and New Values.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Saturday, 29 January 2005 23:51 (twenty years ago)

I think it has to be a bug / mistake, I mean even if phantom was out of business and they were trying to dump stock, the estimated shipping on my order was $28 which they ate up because I spent $26. That can't add up. I know $28 is high for shipping 26 CDs but it's got to get at their bottom line somehow. We'll see what happens! Anyone remember that $4.99 online cd store back in 1998? I remember getting these huge packages almost every day filled with good CDs because some dot-com wanted to have a large customer base.

I'm thinking the same thing is going to happen with this as with that site selling the Beat Happening box set for $5 a few years ago: "store credit"

I just found out about it today. But Amazon's never burned me in the past. The funniest thing is, the e-mail I got says all my stuff will be coming in one shipment - 63 CDs, plus a 700-page hardcover Love & Rockets collection (Locas, marked down to $33 from $50). Since I selected Free Super Saver Shipping, it's probably gonna come by regular mail, and my mailman hates me already. Wait 'til he gets this damn thing in his truck.

I can't believe I got that Birds CD for a dollar.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 30 January 2005 00:33 (twenty years ago)

You didn't this stuff won't be coming. This happens at amazon all the time.

"However, the deal is likely to turn out to be too good to be true after Amazon admitted the mistake and said according to its terms and conditions, it was not bound to honour orders until it had confirmed them by email.

"As the conditions of use clearly state, there is no contract between Amazon.co.uk and the customer for an item until Amazon.co.uk accepts the customer order by e-mail, confirming that it has dispatched the item. Until that time, Amazon.co.uk is within its rights to not accept any customer order," it said in a statement. "

The tracklist for the Robyn Hitchcock rarities collection is from the Pavement Stuff Up The Cracks bootleg.

gygax! (gygax!), Sunday, 30 January 2005 00:40 (twenty years ago)

The cover for Hal Blaine's Psychedelic Percussion suggests that it is a Japanese Import of the Sea & Cake's Nassau.

gygax! (gygax!), Sunday, 30 January 2005 00:44 (twenty years ago)

Damn, I missed that Ornette Coleman Science Fiction and the Don Cherry Mu albums. Those are all great and I only have them on vinyl. I guess I'll have to figure out another 20 CDs to order so I can add those in.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Sunday, 30 January 2005 00:46 (twenty years ago)

Great find, pdf! Thanks!

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Sunday, 30 January 2005 00:51 (twenty years ago)

Did anyone get an email confirmation for their order yet?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 30 January 2005 00:57 (twenty years ago)

yep, I made two separate orders and got confirmation emails for both.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Sunday, 30 January 2005 00:58 (twenty years ago)

the wording up there implies that they can cancel order at any time until they ship

Reviewer: Sir Potomus (Washington, DC) - See all my reviews (ex machina), Sunday, 30 January 2005 01:00 (twenty years ago)

I just noticed this odd phrase at the bottom of the confirmation email:

"Please be aware that items in this order may be subject to California's Electronic Waste Recycling Act. If any items in this order are subject to that Act, the seller of that item has elected to pay any fees due on your behalf."

So maybe they're unloading a bunch of CDs that are packaged in lead and asbestos.

http://lists.essential.org/pipermail/ecommerce/2003q1/000903.html

This is another exapmle of why this stuff won't be coming. It doesn't make sense for the items to be sold for 1.00 even if they are clearance.

svend (svend), Sunday, 30 January 2005 01:12 (twenty years ago)

dude, shut up and stop being such a party pooper.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Sunday, 30 January 2005 01:15 (twenty years ago)

Stormy, don't listen to him. He caught his dad slipping presents under the tree when he was 3, caught his long time girlfriend cheating on him with his archenemy when he was 19, and lost his fortune when the tech bubble burst. Now he's trying to make everyone else feel bad.

Matt Chesnut, Sunday, 30 January 2005 01:20 (twenty years ago)

if you get up past the 1000 item mark, some of this stuff has a HUGE "sourcing fee" on it, like $32. What the fuck is that?

kyle (akmonday), Sunday, 30 January 2005 01:30 (twenty years ago)

Oh, hello - "sourcing fees" are starting to show up in the listing (and I'm only in the 300s). In fact, I couldn't add my last selection to my Shopping Cart. Looks like the fun's over.

Uh oh, that sourcing fee stuff looks not so good.

mrjosh (mrjosh), Sunday, 30 January 2005 01:36 (twenty years ago)

they CAUGHT US

kyle (akmonday), Sunday, 30 January 2005 01:36 (twenty years ago)

If you refresh the search there's now nothing without a sourcing fee. Not bad, it took about three hours for them to close the loophole. Never mind, eh?

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Sunday, 30 January 2005 01:37 (twenty years ago)

damn I wish I'd seen this sooner because all the really good stuff is over the 1000 item mark and I didn't get to it until they caught on.

kyle (akmonday), Sunday, 30 January 2005 01:38 (twenty years ago)

The lesson she gleaned from the former case: "If it's too good to be
true, it's too good to be true."

awesome

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Sunday, 30 January 2005 01:39 (twenty years ago)

I'm thinking that, depending on the number of orders they see, they may not catch it. We'll see. It's worth the candle, anyhow. And hey, if it works for *any* of us, then we can *all* rub it in Svend's face!

J (Jay), Sunday, 30 January 2005 01:39 (twenty years ago)

Maybe if we sit in a circle around a campfire and pray to Jesus, Allah, and Buddha all at once...

I had a shopping cart with some of the items in it before the sourcing fees showed up. And it looks like the old price is still ok if you added them before the fees showed up...

Edward Bax (EdBax), Sunday, 30 January 2005 01:43 (twenty years ago)

FUCK. I only stuck them for five CDs before the sourcing shenanigans started.

I can't wait til they try to back out of this.

I'm seriously thinking we will get this stuff. Do you know how massive a company Amazon is?? They get a bazillion orders every day. They don't have time to sit there and vet every order. Once something is paid for it's paid for. Some dude in a warehouse gets a packing slip and he goes around and pulls discs and boxes them up. He doesn't worry about how much you paid for the thing. But we shall see.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Sunday, 30 January 2005 01:47 (twenty years ago)

my email receipt was 81k. no sign of the "sourcing fee" but i think that's cause i've had all these items in my cart for the last 3-4 hours..

mark p (Mark P), Sunday, 30 January 2005 01:47 (twenty years ago)

And she obviously wasn't paying attention in contracts class, anyway, since that case doesn't say what she thinks it said. Here's an outline of the case, which actually held that the store's ad constituted an offer to sell a $100 fur coat for $1, and that the plaintiff had manifested acceptance of the offer by tendering the dollar.

http://www.4lawschool.com/contracts/lef.htm

That judge is, dare I say it, an idiot.

J (Jay), Sunday, 30 January 2005 01:48 (twenty years ago)

If nothing else worth it's to see a Merzbow box set make the Amazon top 600.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Sunday, 30 January 2005 01:48 (twenty years ago)

hahah FUCK

"Please be aware that items in this order may be subject to California's Electronic Waste Recycling Act. If any items in this order are subject to that Act, the seller of that item has elected to pay any fees due on your behalf."

are those fees the "sourcing fees"?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 30 January 2005 01:49 (twenty years ago)

(xpost obv)

J (Jay), Sunday, 30 January 2005 01:49 (twenty years ago)

i bought a 24 karat gold elvis cd!!!!

quick, make like nothing happened! DELETE THIS THREAD!!!

SECRET ILM!!!!!!! SECRET ILM!!!!!!!!

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 30 January 2005 01:49 (twenty years ago)

I placed my first order just before the sourcing fees showed up; I'm now browsing in the 2800s or so, and not seeing any mention of them.

Douglas (Douglas), Sunday, 30 January 2005 01:51 (twenty years ago)

xxxpost that disclaimer probably refers to computers, monitors, etc. and probably gets stuck on any order shipped to California regardless of what you actually buy. probably.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Sunday, 30 January 2005 01:53 (twenty years ago)

thanks for the tip pdf. I got about 30 cds before the sourcing fee showed up. I will pray to the gods so that they don't cancel all of our orders.

Lingbertt, Sunday, 30 January 2005 01:53 (twenty years ago)

I'll betcha that Waste Recycling Act won't affect anything.

The sourcing fees are probably more likely related to sourcing these items as imports. Or more than likely, the "sourcing fee" was an easier addition than resetting the price on thousands of items. Although, the sourcing fee is different for each album, which kind of suggests it drew from their regular database (less $.99)

I wonder how they discovered. I suspect they must have applications that run algorhythms and detect odd patterns for fraud or shrinkage or whatever.

Either way, this is going to be very expensive for Amazon.

don weiner, Sunday, 30 January 2005 01:53 (twenty years ago)

this is going to be very expensive for Amazon.

Or for dozens of ilx0rs.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Sunday, 30 January 2005 01:55 (twenty years ago)

No one bought Wigwam or Ekseption? I think the only ones I got that I haven't seen mentioned yet are the Rich Kids album and Slade's Play It Loud.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 30 January 2005 01:58 (twenty years ago)

Or more than likely, the "sourcing fee" was an easier addition than resetting the price on thousands of items.

yeah, googling suggests that this is what they do when they want to change the price without changing the price

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 30 January 2005 01:59 (twenty years ago)

I placed my first order just before the sourcing fees showed up; I'm now browsing in the 2800s or so, and not seeing any mention of them.

are you sure?

there's no way they're adding the source fee manually is there?

don weiner, Sunday, 30 January 2005 01:59 (twenty years ago)

Oh, damn. It just showed up across the board...

Douglas (Douglas), Sunday, 30 January 2005 01:59 (twenty years ago)

Looks like I'll make it. I still had all items in my shopping cart at .99. I just needed to add something extra to make the order eligible for free shipping. As of now it stands at $33.00.

Yesssss.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Sunday, 30 January 2005 02:00 (twenty years ago)

I keep checking hoping this fee will go away again..... :-(

kyle (akmonday), Sunday, 30 January 2005 02:02 (twenty years ago)

I hate to be the one to say this, but I seriously doubt any of us will be getting this stuff. I just hope they don't charge me the $250+ my fairly modest order would cost if it were placed now...I made it through before the price changes, but I don't think they'd take too kindly to these kind of shenanigans.

Telephone Thing, Sunday, 30 January 2005 02:02 (twenty years ago)

Print a copy of the order.

Deny the charge if it changes.

don weiner, Sunday, 30 January 2005 02:03 (twenty years ago)

how do I get it to display more than 10 results, anyway?

don weiner, Sunday, 30 January 2005 02:08 (twenty years ago)

their negligence != our collective shenanigans

It's not like we threw a chair into the front window and started looting the place...although it did feel like it.

Matt Chesnut, Sunday, 30 January 2005 02:09 (twenty years ago)

I don't think (hope) that they'll apply the fees retrospectively. More likely they'll just cancel the order.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Sunday, 30 January 2005 02:09 (twenty years ago)

(x-post) I don't see how they could legally charge your credit card more than what your original subtotal stated. They goofed and they should have to deal with it.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Sunday, 30 January 2005 02:10 (twenty years ago)

Gotta say, though: I placed my order 10 minutes ago and have yet to receive an e-mail confirmation. *sigh*

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Sunday, 30 January 2005 02:11 (twenty years ago)

Did you guys catch the $0.99 new Beck album? I missed it and now it's too late-- has a $47 sourcing fee. My brother got it in time, let's see when he gets it...

It says: "Japanese pressing of the singer/songwriter's 2004 album featuring Jack White, scheduled to include a bonus DVD (NTSC/Region 2) & one exclusive bonus track. Details TBA. Geffen."

caspar (caspar), Sunday, 30 January 2005 02:12 (twenty years ago)

I think I slipped in under the radar. E-mail confirmation received.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 30 January 2005 02:14 (twenty years ago)

this is amazon we're talking about, I'm fairly certain they'll honor this and take the hit themselves. I remember several years ago there was some other online retailer (might have been half.com before they joined ebay? dont' remember) who advertised $2 cds or something, but nothing was ever in stock or ever shipped; I think I got one thing out of an order of 100.

kyle (akmonday), Sunday, 30 January 2005 02:16 (twenty years ago)

I got my basket up to about 14 things before I started seeing all the sourcing fees, so I just rushed and ordered. Had to pay the shipping, but that still only made it $29. Got a confirmation email. I guess we'll see...(That Ornette Science Fiction was .99 when I ordered it, now has a $40 fee. Yipes.)

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Sunday, 30 January 2005 02:21 (twenty years ago)

I'm so jealous of everyone who had any money in their bank accounts when this occurred :(

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Sunday, 30 January 2005 02:21 (twenty years ago)

the ironic (?) part of it all was that I has JUST placed an order at Amazon before I went over to ILM. So in order to buy my five CDs at $.99, I had to pick up something else in order to get free shipping AGAIN. Fuckers. They should just give me anything I want.

don weiner, Sunday, 30 January 2005 02:23 (twenty years ago)

that elvis thing i just bought for 99 cents now goes for 60 dollars. we shall see. we shall see.

it's funny how i was being all choosy and now that i can't get more i wish i had just blown thru 200 cds or something. free junk is funny that way.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 30 January 2005 02:26 (twenty years ago)

Still no confirmation email. That was 21 CD's plus a $12 book. I wonder if they're scratching their heads going: "Should we tell him he can still get the book if he wants it, but the .99 CD's are a no-no?"

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Sunday, 30 January 2005 02:27 (twenty years ago)

BTW, this thread gets my vote for "most tension inducing ILM thread of 2005".

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Sunday, 30 January 2005 02:29 (twenty years ago)

phil, how did you even discover this screw up? and what IS Phantom, anyway? Is this a foreign label or a distributor?

kyle (akmonday), Sunday, 30 January 2005 02:41 (twenty years ago)

http://www.phantomcd.com/

That is them I think.

svend (svend), Sunday, 30 January 2005 02:43 (twenty years ago)

I was just composing my angry letter to amazon while in the shower. it'll be about how loyal a customer I am, and the faith I put into amazon as an online retailer - my expectation that the product I see on the website is the product I will receive, etc. Then I'll say that I'm never going to shop at amazon again and tell all my friends and family members about it.

supercub, Sunday, 30 January 2005 02:43 (twenty years ago)

This letter is for when they try to back out.

supercub, Sunday, 30 January 2005 02:45 (twenty years ago)

looks like the sourcing fees ae starting to disappear now and the prices are getting collapsed into normal sounding figures.

kyle (akmonday), Sunday, 30 January 2005 02:47 (twenty years ago)

I put 26 CDs in my cart a few hours ago and just checked out, all still $.99. Sweet. Didn't see that Merzbow box, though - DAMN.

mcd (mcd), Sunday, 30 January 2005 02:47 (twenty years ago)

I bought 8 then played megaman then came back here and the fun's over!

Curious George Rides a Republican (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 30 January 2005 02:52 (twenty years ago)

A lot of these I don't give a shit about, but it looked like they had good resale value. I bought some multiples, but for the purposes of this thread, let's just say I bought one of everything.

Like Scott I really wish I'd bought more stuff just to sell and not to keep.

kyle (akmonday), Sunday, 30 January 2005 03:04 (twenty years ago)

the problem with the wondrous letter composition is that it doesn't really go anywhere - i remember writing to samgoody.com about the beat happening box and they preemptively claimed that it was out of stock so as to withold shipping. if i recall correctly, that company also reserves the right to cancel your order if a new shipment doesn't arrive within 30 days, or some such nonsense. xpost

perhaps laws regarding improper advertising have changed in the States? (most likely) - as a youth i remember my dad explaining the deals he would occasionally get on sale items that were mispriced. nowadays i'll read say a best buy circular and they'll say that they're not honoring the price as printed.

blackmail.is.my.life (blackmail.is.my.life), Sunday, 30 January 2005 03:05 (twenty years ago)

No more "Maggot Brain" for 99 cents...

Goddamit.

it only took three scrollings to go back up to the 10 dollar range.
:( You guys cleaned it out.

donut christ (donut), Sunday, 30 January 2005 03:12 (twenty years ago)

I honestly just thought this was some amazing sale where they were getting rid of a bunch of import CDs they'd had lying around forever.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 30 January 2005 03:14 (twenty years ago)

anyone else getting really high "sourcing fees"?

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Sunday, 30 January 2005 03:16 (twenty years ago)

My mouse hand is all cramped up. I feel like I should smoke a cigarette.

Curious George Rides a Republican (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 30 January 2005 03:16 (twenty years ago)

I don't mind if the order gets cancelled; easy come, easy go. But I would be rather upset if my credit card is charged like $600.

supercub, Sunday, 30 January 2005 03:18 (twenty years ago)

They can't charge you for an amount you don't authorize. Period.

J (Jay), Sunday, 30 January 2005 03:19 (twenty years ago)

Well, let's all speculate about what we (may be) getting!

I saw Pink Floyd - Pulse up there, and thankfully, I read the description before choosing to buy it. Ends up it was a Chinese VCD. Thank God I didn't waste money on that. One of my CD's apparently included the "Japanese bonus track," so I assume that CD is from Japan. I wonder if the booklet and everything is going to be wrote in Japanese so I can't read any of it.

Mickey (modestmickey), Sunday, 30 January 2005 03:19 (twenty years ago)

I'm excited about the Don Cherry "Mu" CD and the Charlie Parker "Orinthology"(sic) compilation. Oh, and the Francoise Hardy CD's I ordered, too.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Sunday, 30 January 2005 03:23 (twenty years ago)

yeah, like there's tons of listings that look like this:

Explode Together [IMPORT](Audio CD)
~ XTC
Avg. Customer Rating:
Usually ships in 5 to 6 days
List Price:   $0.99
Buy new:   $0.99 + $16.50 sourcing fee

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Sunday, 30 January 2005 03:23 (twenty years ago)

If history is any indicator (ie, Beat Happening box sets for $4.00, digital cameras for $14.99), Amazon will cancel your order with no issues whatsoever. I bought about ten records to be shipped here to Canada, but I doubt they'll be sent through - and if they do, sadly, I suspect Phantom will be going out of business.

But awesome find!

Sean M (Sean M), Sunday, 30 January 2005 03:24 (twenty years ago)

yeah basically they caught the error and added this sourcing fees, ken.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Sunday, 30 January 2005 03:25 (twenty years ago)

If I had it to do over again, I would have gotten less Sly & the Family Stone and more Funkadelic.

Freak Kitchen has mastered every cliche of tasteless American guitar rock and added their own ridiculous Swedish twist. The solos are miles over the top and the lyrics are cartoonishly bad. I got my copy of this album for free, I think the price was just right. If you're intrigued by a Scandavian charicature of everything wrong with rock music in the States, download some songs but don't waste your money.

I've gone back and looked at a few of the items again. They're getting the prices changed quickly now. The Dimmu Borgir is now $37.49, nothing about a sourcing fee.

Curious George Rides a Republican (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 30 January 2005 03:27 (twenty years ago)

yeah, i mean.. just seemed a little nuts..haha.. well, i hope everyone who ordered stuff gets it

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Sunday, 30 January 2005 03:27 (twenty years ago)

As long as I get my Mgama, Electirc Eels and My Bloodydollar sign valentine discs for $ 0.99, the rest can be out of stock.

brg30 (brg30), Sunday, 30 January 2005 03:28 (twenty years ago)

Curious George Rides a Republican (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 30 January 2005 03:29 (twenty years ago)

For me the highlight was 4 Opeth discs. Fuck yeah.

Mickey (modestmickey), Sunday, 30 January 2005 03:30 (twenty years ago)

I mean, somebody's threatening somebody with a grapefruit knife RIGHT NOW.

Curious George Rides a Republican (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 30 January 2005 03:31 (twenty years ago)

By the way. Did anybody go all the way through the first listing to listing # 5,000? Or am I the only one? That was a whole lot of clicking.

Mickey (modestmickey), Sunday, 30 January 2005 03:31 (twenty years ago)

I made it to about 2850.

Douglas (Douglas), Sunday, 30 January 2005 04:17 (twenty years ago)

Just got my order confirmation "Thank You!' e-mail. I guess Amazon's footin' the bill after all! Wow.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Sunday, 30 January 2005 04:31 (twenty years ago)

Phil, if you don't mind my asking, how did you figure out about/find out about this gushing oil well?

Curious George Rides a Republican (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 30 January 2005 04:31 (twenty years ago)

Coming in at the tail end was like playing Tron or something, skipping through the system looking for the Xtra special 99 cent discs before the bad guys caught them and added their accursed sorting fees.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Sunday, 30 January 2005 04:32 (twenty years ago)

amazon sends two emails, one is a confirmation email and one is a "we're shipping now and charging your credit card now" email. the latter is the important one.

p.s. you can get 5 opeth albums on emusic for less than $10 total
http://www.emusic.com/artist/10557/10557484.html

a banana (alanbanana), Sunday, 30 January 2005 04:46 (twenty years ago)

Nice job to those of you who scored the Plush CD for $1 -- that's about $31 less than I paid for it :-(

Jeff Wright (JeffW1858), Sunday, 30 January 2005 04:51 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, we'll see--their pricing plicy says that they'll cancel orders that are mis-priced--but you never know....

mrjosh (mrjosh), Sunday, 30 January 2005 04:53 (twenty years ago)

Somebody help a brother out... is this still live or am i misreading?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 30 January 2005 04:57 (twenty years ago)

No, it's definitely over.

mrjosh (mrjosh), Sunday, 30 January 2005 04:58 (twenty years ago)

FUCK!

ben welsh (benwelsh), Sunday, 30 January 2005 05:39 (twenty years ago)

No price change/cancellation emails yet...it may be that those of us early enough will squeak through. Which is unlikely but would be like so totally badass.

Biting nails here. Dammit.

Telephone Thing, Sunday, 30 January 2005 06:14 (twenty years ago)

wish I had got here sooner. I bet those Rother solo discs are good.

eman (eman), Sunday, 30 January 2005 07:28 (twenty years ago)

While I was lucky and managed to get an order in before the iron fist came down, I will be surprised if any orders actually ship. In the Amazon rules of usage it says:

If an item's correct price is higher than our stated price, we will, at our discretion, either contact you for instructions before shipping or cancel your order and notify you of such cancellation.

We shall see. I have a confirmation, but unfortunately that doesn't preempt this policy.

William Selman (William Selman), Sunday, 30 January 2005 07:37 (twenty years ago)

the suspense is killing me

supercub, Sunday, 30 January 2005 09:07 (twenty years ago)

none of us are ever getting anything from this! i remember that $2 cd thing from years ago where one or two people actually received one or two items... this probably won't even be that good.

but this is the order i put in around 6pm EST (i got the confirmation email):

"3 Originals” - Earth & Fire
"Hell Comes to Essen” - Bewitched
"Ritualism-Live in the Studio” - Radio Birdman
"Force the Hand of Chance” - Psychic TV
"Simples” - Magma

"Hoodoo Man” - Birth Control
"Filosofem” - Burzum (for my radio station)
"Wolf's Lair Abyss” - Mayhem
"Sterntaler” - Michael Rother
"Behold the Beginning” - Diamond Head
"Tasvallan Presidentti” - Tasvallan Presidentti
"World Became the World” - Pfm

of course, i stopped around 1300, like an idiot. but i had things to do.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Sunday, 30 January 2005 09:09 (twenty years ago)

did anybody snag that 20CD caetano veloso box from brazil for $1?

Head explodes in jealousy (assuming you get it).

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Sunday, 30 January 2005 09:47 (twenty years ago)

If I had seen it only an hour earlier, I woulda cleaned up. I was about 10 cds in when the charges started popping up. I didn't have anything great in my cart at that point so I scrapped it. I wish I had found the country box or the caetano box or etc. :/

polyphonic (polyphonic), Sunday, 30 January 2005 10:21 (twenty years ago)

A friend who lives in Taiwan (and thus couldn't take advantage of this deal, because I don't even think Amazon US will ship there) tipped me off. I really hope I get my shit.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Sunday, 30 January 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

... me too, especially since I spent like two hours clicking through those listings.

mrjosh (mrjosh), Sunday, 30 January 2005 15:30 (twenty years ago)

After they fixed the mistake, I went back and added up the retail prices of everything I ordered, and felt a bit faint.

Curious George Rides a Republican (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 30 January 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

in addition to making 53 purchases, i also had what must have been a six-hour dream about this last night too. the dream was basically me clicking through the listings as fast as i could while my grade school bully (who in this dream worked for amazon) tried to put sourcing fees on the discs before i could buy them. worst "chase" dream ever.

Nick Sylvester, Sunday, 30 January 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

Could one possibility be that the higher fees kicked in once the cutouts were simply cleaned out? For instance, I jumped into the pool relatively early but after a few ILMers had been shopping, and I saw some of the things they mentioned they had scored, but marked up already. I had just assumed they were now out of stock in the 99 cent realm.

I suppose if a point came when they ALL got knocked up with sourcing fees it was a mistake. I just really want my Holderlin, Magma, etc.

Brian Turner (btwfmu), Sunday, 30 January 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

Now you all know how Adam and Eve must have felt on eviction day.

Ian Christe (Ian Christe), Sunday, 30 January 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

I was thinking the same thing--maybe it actually was a real sale, and the inventory was actually cleaned out.

mrjosh (mrjosh), Sunday, 30 January 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)

When I went back and looked up regular retail prices, only three of 234 purchases were sold out. Still, maybe a timed sale?

Curious George Rides a Republican (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 30 January 2005 18:31 (twenty years ago)

MAYBE GOD JUST LOVES US, OKAY?

Matt Chesnut, Sunday, 30 January 2005 18:33 (twenty years ago)

Hey man, I'm not complaining! Last night God said, "Me love you long time, joe!"

Curious George Rides a Republican (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 30 January 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

I'm sorry I missed out on this (didn't read about this til right now), but something like that is too good to last very long.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Sunday, 30 January 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

Saw this thread early but I never could get it to work. Seems like mine didn't sort right or something, and then when I searched for a few of the records mentioned they looked like full price. But I can't wait to hear how it turns out -- hope you all get your stuff.

Mark (MarkR), Sunday, 30 January 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

When you sort by price, it includes a lot of the used prices, so you have to scroll through a few pages first.

frokopf, Sunday, 30 January 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

checking my order history online, it says nothing will ship until mid february, that makes me fairly pessimistic about this happening

kyle (akmonday), Sunday, 30 January 2005 20:25 (twenty years ago)

I'm just going to stare at the all the music in my apt I haven't listened to yet and try not to thinking about missing this.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 30 January 2005 20:45 (twenty years ago)

oof, just listened to samples of Rothers solo stuff. he got new-agey like a mofo.

eman (eman), Sunday, 30 January 2005 20:47 (twenty years ago)

i really doubt you guys are gonna get this stuff for those prices, but if you do, i'll be happy enough.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Sunday, 30 January 2005 20:52 (twenty years ago)

checking my order history online, it says nothing will ship until mid february, that makes me fairly pessimistic about this happening

yeah, this seems to be common practice. you probably won't get any word from them until something appears via snail mail, likely a gift cert snafu.

but good luck - i considered the plush record, but thought it was too good to be true!

blackmail.is.my.life (blackmail.is.my.life), Sunday, 30 January 2005 21:31 (twenty years ago)

My idiot roommate is trying to convince me that I can sue them if I don't get the albums I ordered. Not only do I sue them for the value of the CD's I bought ($26) but also the time it took me to shop for them!

I am super excited about this possibility!

Mickey (modestmickey), Sunday, 30 January 2005 23:15 (twenty years ago)

Interesting development- Amazon deleted all the duplicates from my order, so now I have ten items in the order and are no longer eligible for free shipping. So I changed it to Standard (final total $21.89 for ten CDs with shipping) and they say it'll ship February 7th. Odd. Still not betting on actually receiving anything, though.

Telephone Thing, Sunday, 30 January 2005 23:31 (twenty years ago)

I ARE TEH EXPIRT at subject/verb agreement. Gah.

Telephone Thing, Sunday, 30 January 2005 23:32 (twenty years ago)

This is intriguing. Sorta glad I missed it in that that way I have no angst about whether I get the orders or not! ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 30 January 2005 23:37 (twenty years ago)

I just checked my order, and it's unchanged from yesterday.

supercub, Sunday, 30 January 2005 23:41 (twenty years ago)

ditto.

mark p (Mark P), Sunday, 30 January 2005 23:44 (twenty years ago)

Mine too. Man, I hate this wait that's going to last a couple more weeks to find out if we're getting anything.

Mickey (modestmickey), Sunday, 30 January 2005 23:59 (twenty years ago)

fwiw, amazon's delivery estimate for a previous order (received yesterday) was feb 8th.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 31 January 2005 00:02 (twenty years ago)

I wonder if the duplicate-deletion/no-free-shipping-for-you thing is maybe a way for them to a) try and scare off some people with particularly large orders and b) cut their losses on people who do stick around?

OH GOD THE SUSPENSE

Telephone Thing, Monday, 31 January 2005 00:05 (twenty years ago)

I had already ordered three CDs on Thursday. I have an ipod shuffle on order, and now these 26 CDs. This is very exciting.
You'd think I was a man of considerable means, based on all this extravagance.

supercub, Monday, 31 January 2005 00:15 (twenty years ago)

While I'm still doubtful that we'll get anything, it seems like Amazom might be doing some damage control and cutting their losses. They took the Shadows box set and 1000 Country & Western Greats 50 (!) CD box sets off my order and left all the single CDs on there. If they're going to cancel all the orders, why get rid of dupes and box sets?

So, maybe we're sorta getting away with it? That being said, anyone want to buy a G.G. Allin import rarities CD?

Atron, Monday, 31 January 2005 00:15 (twenty years ago)

while we're on the subject of incredibly good amazon deals, you can get the first Crydamoure comp for 97 cents used without any kind of weird sale.

Atron, I really hope you're right. Thankfully, all my Trojan box sets are still there.

In other news, I'm really surprised that I'm the only one who bought this: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0002DSDLI/002-2323437-3797608?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance

Mickey (modestmickey), Monday, 31 January 2005 00:17 (twenty years ago)

At this point, getting the CDs would just be icing on the cake, with all the fun I'm having with this.

hmm...actually, I want the CDs.

supercub, Monday, 31 January 2005 00:19 (twenty years ago)

All my stuff's still there in my order history. Would be great if I did receive them, but either way it don't matter much.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Monday, 31 January 2005 00:41 (twenty years ago)

Hmm... my order is still there but they removed one CD - "One - Air." My order squeaks in now at $25 and change.

caspar (caspar), Monday, 31 January 2005 00:42 (twenty years ago)

oof, just listened to samples of Rothers solo stuff. he got new-agey like a mofo.

Yeah, I've seen his solo albums used many times and everything I listened to was some kind of new-agey solo piano crap.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Monday, 31 January 2005 00:50 (twenty years ago)

Hm, thanks for the Crydamoure tip, I just ordered that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 31 January 2005 00:54 (twenty years ago)

Hm, the "400 Country Greats" and "Complete Science Fiction..." have been axed for me. 26 items, free shipping intact.

Matt Chesnut, Monday, 31 January 2005 01:02 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I lost Science Fiction too. Dammit. The rest are still there, for now.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Monday, 31 January 2005 01:05 (twenty years ago)

Hmm, they removed my giant Wagner box set. So I'm *slightly* under super saver shipping. Everything else is still there though.

mrjosh (mrjosh), Monday, 31 January 2005 01:15 (twenty years ago)

Well, they dropped 55 items of my 234, including the multiples, the boxes, and the discs that listed for $40+. I'm tempted to call them and get what passes for their official word on the situation.

Curious George Rides a Republican (Rock Hardy), Monday, 31 January 2005 01:21 (twenty years ago)

No, wait. They did remove two cd's from my list!: Carpenters Treasure and the Best Of ELP. Two I can live without, easily, though I feel they'll just continue subtracting until there's nothing on my list except for the non-.99 CD item I also ordered. Fuggem.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Monday, 31 January 2005 01:21 (twenty years ago)

Curious George, call! The tension is killing us!

Mickey (modestmickey), Monday, 31 January 2005 01:25 (twenty years ago)

Seriously, call them right now! Now they want me to pay shipping on both my orders. (The nerve!)

mrjosh (mrjosh), Monday, 31 January 2005 01:29 (twenty years ago)

Man. If they take a single CD off my order, I have to pay shipping. I'm scared. I should have just ordered a bunch of shit I don't care about. So the plot thickens.

Mickey (modestmickey), Monday, 31 January 2005 01:32 (twenty years ago)

I wish I'd consolidated it all into one MASSIVE order. Then they wouldn't've been able to do this to me.

mrjosh (mrjosh), Monday, 31 January 2005 01:32 (twenty years ago)

I just shot them an e-mail (couldn't find a phone # on the site). I asked why items had been removed from my order without prior notification.

This is gonna be interesting.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Monday, 31 January 2005 01:34 (twenty years ago)

hmm... apparently they've started removing some of the larger box sets from my order. The complete Shostakovich symphonies is gone, as is the Astor Piazzolla box, and the Ornette Complete Science Fiction. I'm keeping my fingers crossed on the rest.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 31 January 2005 01:36 (twenty years ago)

Just FYI, keep in mind that you can COMBINE ORDERS. I wish I'd realized this before I cancelled one of my orders. You can also ADD items to orders.

mrjosh (mrjosh), Monday, 31 January 2005 01:36 (twenty years ago)

Oh lordy, the suspense. She kills me!

Matt Chesnut, Monday, 31 January 2005 01:37 (twenty years ago)

Just FYI, keep in mind that you can COMBINE ORDERS.

Orders sent with Super Saver Shipping can't be combined. I've had four items total disappear from three different orders and I expect them all to be gone before too long.

Ryan WS (fffv), Monday, 31 January 2005 01:42 (twenty years ago)

I got a shipping confirmation for one of the CDs that I ordered. Just one! that's crazy. I wonder if they'll all trickle in individually.

anonymous hippopotamus, Monday, 31 January 2005 01:44 (twenty years ago)

Amazon customer service: 1800-201-7575. I'm on hold now...

Curious George Rides a Republican (Rock Hardy), Monday, 31 January 2005 01:45 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, they definitely zapped any multiple-disc sets. So, goodbye Merzbow 4 disc set, goodbye Tangerine Dream box, goodbye Complete Science Fiction, and goodbye 7 CD Shadows box set

Everything else appears to be there though...

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 31 January 2005 01:48 (twenty years ago)

I ordered 3 of those...

Curious George Rides a Republican (Rock Hardy), Monday, 31 January 2005 01:49 (twenty years ago)

(The Shadows box, that is.)

Curious George Rides a Republican (Rock Hardy), Monday, 31 January 2005 01:49 (twenty years ago)

the plush record seems to have disappeared from my order, which is too bad. still have 10 discs left though...i hope it works! It probably won't, right?

tylerw, Monday, 31 January 2005 01:50 (twenty years ago)

They've taken more off since the update I gave above. Still on hold...

Curious George Rides a Republican (Rock Hardy), Monday, 31 January 2005 01:50 (twenty years ago)

This thread may be the best one ever- sorry, evah! I love the storyline- music-crazed fans embark on a fast and furious wild goose chase to get rich quick, sort of- like a cross between Velvet Goldmine and It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. I say this not as putdown but in celebration of.

Ken L (Ken L), Monday, 31 January 2005 01:51 (twenty years ago)

"B-b-but the Magma boxes were going to be birthday presents to my nieces!"

Curious George Rides a Republican (Rock Hardy), Monday, 31 January 2005 01:52 (twenty years ago)

I need a transcript of the phone conversation or else ya'll gon' make me lose my mind up in here.

Matt Chesnut, Monday, 31 January 2005 02:01 (twenty years ago)

Hahaha!

This is getting fun.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Monday, 31 January 2005 02:06 (twenty years ago)

My shipping estimate just moved out from Feb 7 to Feb 22, and the Plush CD has disappeared. I still have 25 single CD's left.

Garibaldianne (Garibaldianne), Monday, 31 January 2005 02:09 (twenty years ago)

Gah! Something is gone from mine and I lost free shipping! I can't find what it was they took away, either. It wasn't a boxset, though.

Mickey (modestmickey), Monday, 31 January 2005 02:11 (twenty years ago)

this is like 'predator' or something... they're picking us off one by one....

mrjosh (mrjosh), Monday, 31 January 2005 02:15 (twenty years ago)

1 "Time Has Told Me"
Nick Drake; Audio CD; $0.99

That one. Gone. :(

Mickey (modestmickey), Monday, 31 January 2005 02:16 (twenty years ago)

1 "People's History"
Dismemberment Plan; Audio CD; $0.99

And that too. I'm scared. Somebody hold me. (Other than the Amazon.com phone support line, please. You're free to take me off hold.)

Mickey (modestmickey), Monday, 31 January 2005 02:18 (twenty years ago)

Okay, when I first placed these orders yesterday I did it in two orders, so I could get some in in case the hammer fell. I had two orders, 122 items + 112 items. So I finally got on the line with a CS rep, and gave her the first order number. At first she said that the whole order was cancelled, because the prices were errors.

"But I'm looking at my order online and there are still 79 items on it."
"Um.... could you hold for a minute?"

Five minute hold.

She: Okay, on the two orders you placed yesterday, there are 79 items still on one, and 84 items still on the other.
Me: But the orders aren't completely cancelled?
She: No, it looks like just some items were dropped. I'm looking at some of the items that are left, this "Best of Bowie," the price is 38.99, that might be dropped.
Me: So this wasn't a sale, this was a pricing error?
She: Yes.
Me: So they're going through and dropping the high-priced items? Does that mean that Amazon is going to honor their error on some of the items and not on others?
She: No. If it turns out that all those prices are in error, they'll all be dropped.
Me: So is it possible that some of those prices weren't in error?
She: I'm not sure, I really don't know. I'm going to find out.
Me: Would you send me an email when you find out?
She: Yes, I will, definitely?
Me: And Amazon won't honor the prices on some and not on others?
She: No. They don't do that.

Curious George Rides a Republican (Rock Hardy), Monday, 31 January 2005 02:19 (twenty years ago)

While I was typing that, I just got an email from Amazon.

Greetings from Amazon.com.

Oh, fucking hell, they just took off Philip Glass and now it's at 50 bucks. Cue: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! (bckd. music - "The Masquarade Is Over")

Matt Chesnut, Monday, 31 January 2005 02:23 (twenty years ago)

All of my first order has been cancelled. The 2nd order is still there with 84 items, but I'm sure that'll be gone too before long.

Curious George Rides a Republican (Rock Hardy), Monday, 31 January 2005 02:24 (twenty years ago)

Just got off the phone. Same thing here.

She said the items they took off were incorrectly priced so they cancelled them. She had no idea if the others will eventually be taken off also, but it looks like they were all the wrong prices. I just cancelled the whole order.

Well, guys, it was fun while it lasted.

Mickey (modestmickey), Monday, 31 January 2005 02:25 (twenty years ago)

Good thing I clicked through all five thousand of those items. It was so worth it.

supercub, Monday, 31 January 2005 03:59 (twenty years ago)

I think "1" was the quantity, not part of the title. I did a quick search for "Golden Greats" Phantom and got Frank Sinatra and Glenn Miller.

My five things are still there.

But I'm pretty sure they will clip them.

I'm only hoping that there was no software solution to their problem--I'm hoping Amazon's only solution was to go over these orders by hand.

Scott's order is dwindling. Now only 6 titles in the order.

Maria D. (Maria D.), Monday, 31 January 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

You know what the upshot of all this is gonna be? Instead of reaping the once-expected windfall, a certain type of ILMer is going to end up taking money better spent to pay off debt- student, credit-card or otherwise- or to contribute to some sort of nest egg, and using that money, if not all at once then over the course of time, to pay more or less full price for the Magma box (was that really on the list, or just Curious G.'s clever invention to represent a typical item?) and the Hal Blaine album and every other damned thing mentioned on the thread. Damn the pusherman!

Ken L (Ken L), Monday, 31 January 2005 15:26 (twenty years ago)

I'm now down from 39 items to 21, and the price doubled thanks to shipping charges. I'm sure it's just a matter of time till it's all gone.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 31 January 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

Dear ILM,

We here at Amazon Customer Service would like to apologize for our recent pricing error, and assure you that new safeguards have been put in place to prevent this from ever happening again.

We sincerely hope we didn't cause too much inconvenience, and we remind you that our customers are still our most valued asset.

In order to show our appreciation for your continuing support you will each be receiving a copy of "1 Golden Great" for the low price of $0.99 plus $14.98 sourcing charge.

Keep on rockin'

Curious George Rides a Republican (Rock Hardy), Monday, 31 January 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

Someone should really amend the title of this thread- I followed the first few posts (without looking at post date), searching like a madman, and encountered prices of $16.98 and up.
While I feel for those that had their orders slowly stripped away, there are many other ILMers right now trying to figure out "how did they do this, why can't I make my order work?"
Or, I'm just an idiot, in addition to being a johnny come lately.

J (Jay), Monday, 31 January 2005 22:09 (twenty years ago)

What I think is most interesting about this is that they haven't sent out an email confirming the error, they're just unilaterally removing stuff from people's queues. That seems slightly wrong to me . . . shouldn't they send you an email saying "hey we fucked up yo and here's the real price for that Caetano Veloso boxset" and give the customer the choice? I suppose that's one more reason why amazon is a b--sh-t company; tack it on to the long list including the one-click patent and the fact that they donated more $$ to republicans than to democrats in 2004 . . .

J (Jay), Monday, 31 January 2005 22:13 (twenty years ago)

Also, I just got this message when I tried to change my shipping preference!

Amazon.com Timeout
Something about your request to Amazon.com caused our server to take a long time ... longer than we would like. So, we automatically stopped the program. Please try again.

Like it's my fault that their server can't handle a simple request to change shipping method!

J (Jay), Monday, 31 January 2005 22:15 (twenty years ago)

Quit fucking with their server! You're probably the reason we all lost our CD's!

I think it's a little weird that amazon isn't sending out emails explaining why they are making our orders disappear. It's a little sinister.

supercub, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 00:24 (twenty years ago)

whoops, J said the same thing upthread.

supercub, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 00:26 (twenty years ago)

I got one, but I had the nerve to call them on their customer service number which they never publish but which I used my secret mentalist powers to divine. Which reminds me, customer support for amazon.ca, the Canadian site, is 1-877-586-3230. If I come across any other phone numbers, I'll post 'em here.

Curious George Rides a Republican (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 00:54 (twenty years ago)

hey guys, I just got an e-mail from MICROSOFT and if we FORWARD it to other people BILL GATES HIMSELF will track them and give us THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS EACH for each e-mail we send. I know if sounds too good to be true, but, it's actually a CAN'T MISS PROPOSITION.

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 01:24 (twenty years ago)

I agree with the remarks about Amazon removing items from our accounts without any notice (which in my case resulted in getting slapped with a rather hefty shipping charge, as I slipped below the free shippingly mark.) I can understand they made an error and need to correct it, but really they could go about things a bit better. Anyway, by my last count I'm down to 11 items, down from 44.

D. Bachyrycz, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 01:30 (twenty years ago)

If I worked at Amazon I'd recommend attaching a five dollar processing charge to all of your cards, just to teach a lesson about acting out of bad faith and abusing the commons. Then you could complain to your state attorneys general about the company ripping you off and watch them all drop everything and charge to your rescue.

Joe Morgensternly, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 01:35 (twenty years ago)

Joe, that's why I wouldn't piss in your mouth if your teeth were on fire.

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 01:43 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, in the opening post PDF was under the impression that this was a clearance sale, passed the word along to ILM pals. We speculated that it might be an error, but is there anything wrong with placing the orders in case it was just a Phantom fire sale? I wouldn't call that acting out of bad faith. If things are a little slow in the WSJ newsroom, Joe, don't come around ILM looking for something to write about.

Curious George Rides a Republican (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 01:48 (twenty years ago)

I feel the pain. Here's what you can do. Write a letter to the author of The Ethicist column at the New York Times Sunday Magazine explaining the circumstances of your transactions and ask for wisdom. Roughly, I can tell you in advance the answer. He'll shit on you but in a nice and polite way so your feelings aren't hurt.

Joe Morgensternly, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 01:50 (twenty years ago)

As long as I get my Mgama

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 08:38 (twenty years ago)

(I mean, a few days ago if I heard someone complaining at not being able to get a Caetano Veloso box set for 99 cents, I would've thought they were daft. But now it sort of makes sense.)

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 08:40 (twenty years ago)

the fact that they donated more $$ to republicans than to democrats in 2004 . .

weird. why would a book merchant donate so much money to a party that probably doesn't even want people to know how to read?

o. nate - you have to buy it. Do it for THIS THREAD!

mcd (mcd), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

Well, apparently I have no choice. They say the order can't be cancelled or changed. I guess I could return it though. I think that between their albums and the EP I already have all of those songs, unless they are different versions, but I guess I should keep it for the principle of the thing.

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 15:08 (twenty years ago)

I had ordered "Lights Out", not realizing it was some big mistake. My order has vanished, no message or anything.

Fuck Amazon. They care enough to send me a confirmation email that I placed the order, but then they cancel the entire thing without so much as a "whoops, our bad." Bezos just made my shit list.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 15:54 (twenty years ago)

I only didn't go for this as I thought "Posters? don't want one"

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

Oh come on mark p, you must be joking. First of all, I don't think anyone's really enraged--I'm certainly not. Second, I have *several* better reasons to think Amazon's a shit company than this; please see my posts upthread. Finally, as I indicated, I don't really care so much that I'm not getting my order--what I care about is that they cancelled it without sending me any notice! That's simply and undeniably a bad business practice. Just imagine if we were talking about something of consequence rather than just a bunch of Rich Kids and Magma cds.

J (Jay), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 17:21 (twenty years ago)

What, you parasites are still lingering? They cancelled my ripoff! What a ripoff! That's simply bad ripoff etiquette! I hate Jeff Bezos and am going to write the Better Ripoff Bureau! I only ordered two hundred some inconsequential CDs! If they don't treat tallywhackers like us with any respect, how do you think they treat their sincere customers?!?

Joe Morgensternly, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)

Why are you trolling here?

Curious George Rides a Republican (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

Considering your nickname appears to be a bad homage to Michael Moore, your opinion is of no consequence at all! So . . . uh . . . fuck you, Joe? Yeah - FUCK YOU JOE! :-)

(xpost obv. And yeah, I know IHBT. IHL. IWHAND.)

J (Jay), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

You know, I've now read Joe's upthread posts, and he really is a fucking moron. Amazon is "the commons"? Oh, I'm sure that their shareholders really feel that way. Whadda dipshit.

J (Jay), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

I googled him and found one WSJ byline, a story that was reprinted in a Michael Moore book. His only posts to ILM under this name are the bitching about this Amazon thing.

Hey Joe! This board is called "I Love Music," not "I Love Severe, Moralistic Parental Disapproval."

Curious George Rides a Republican (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

Oh dear, the piss ants are upset. This thread isn't called "Amazing Amazon Sale," it's called "We're Mad as Hell We Didn't Get to Ripoff Amazon & We're Not Going to Take It!"

Joe Morgensternly, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

Once again, Joe, why are you trolling here?

Curious George Rides a Republican (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 18:31 (twenty years ago)

We just received this:
Greetings from Amazon.com.

We regret to inform you that an error caused an item or items on your
recent order, #002-9622944-7132862, to be displayed at an incorrect
price.

In accordance with our posted policies on pricing, we're unable to
offer items that have an incorrectly posted price. We have cancelled
any affected items from your order.

At any given time, despite our best efforts, a small number of the
millions of items on our site may be mispriced. We do, however,
verify prices as part of our shipping procedures. If we discover that
an item's correct price is higher than our stated price, we will, at
our discretion, either contact you for instructions before shipping or
cancel your order and notify you of such cancellation. This policy is
posted in the Help section and is accessible through numerous other
areas of our web site.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

We value your business and hope that you will give us a chance to
serve you again in the future.

Sincerely,

I still have one CD left:

1 of: Psychedelic Jazz & Soul [IMPORT] [Audio CD]
By: Psychedelic Jazz & Soul

I'm taking that as some sort of sign. I'm sure Psychedelic Jazz and Soul will succumb eventually just like all the rest, but it sure did its best to hang in there till the end. Long live Psychedelic Jazz & Soul!

walter kranz (walterkranz), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

The dream is dead.

But the albums will live on in our hearts and minds. I say we all write capsule reviews of everything we ordered anyway.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 21:01 (twenty years ago)

That night when we bought those CDs, I was feeling cranky. The whole possibility of getting scads of high-priced CDs below cost perked me right up. Turned my frown upside down. In the back of my mind, I knew it couldn't be real, so I don't actually feel all that disappointed. Better to have loved and lost? I say yes.

Maria D. (Maria D.), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

Check it out, my 13th Floor Elevators CD slipped through somehow:

i actually sort of agree with WSJ guy, but he has a distinctively schoolmarmish quality i don't identify with.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

I think the melodramatic/"sky is falling" quality is what makes him such a dink, frankly. But really I can't imagine caring one way or another about this whole "controversy". Not enough to agree or disagree with someone so obviously hysterical, anyway.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

I think the real lesson to be learned from him is that the good people of Scotland pay full price for their Magma boxes.

Ken L (Ken L), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

This whole thing made a question pop into my head. Would it be possible (or, more importantly, feasible) to create an ILM Music Buying Cooperative? That is, an umbrella group that would set up business accts. with distributors to buy at wholesale prices. I can think of about a dozen reasons why it wouldn't work, but it's worth asking the question anyway.

Curious George Rides a Republican (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

I can think of about a dozen reasons why it wouldn't work,

because a near-majority of us are deadbeats?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

I received my $0.99 3-CD Frank Sinatra Golden Greats today.

I don't suppose I'll receive anything else :)

anonymous hippopotamus, Friday, 4 February 2005 01:17 (twenty years ago)

Wow, you actually received one item? That's great! Maybe I'll still get Psychedelic Jazz & Soul after all. The funny thing is if you look at some of those CDs now, under the "Customers who bought this title also bought:" header it lists only other Phantom CDs.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Friday, 4 February 2005 02:21 (twenty years ago)

You lot would be quite useless if the revolution ever came to pass.

None of you would-be looters ever read Burroughs very closely, did you? You guys burned down the pharmacy in no time flat. From experience, I can tell you that it is possible to discover some huge pricing blunders at Amazon and actually get away with it.

What I thought would be common sense rule #1 is this: you don't get on internet message boards and blab to the world about it. Is anyone truly surprised that the Amazon system picked up on all the "Phantom" search activity and buying frenzy? If the original poster had kept his mouth shut and quietly ordered his 100 99 cent box sets, all would be well -- well, for him anyway.

Althusser, Friday, 4 February 2005 04:57 (twenty years ago)

I hate to burst your bubble, but I heard about the Amazon "sale" independently of ILM. The friend who informed me had heard about that day, and the person he heard it from had known about it from the night before.

It's 2005 -- when mistakes like these happen, shit gets around quickly. The world doesn't rely on ILM to open the floodgates on all things music.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 4 February 2005 05:27 (twenty years ago)

well, I got my package from Amazon - one tiny CD single in a way-too-big cardboard box. Kind of anticlimactic, I guess. I'd have rather had the Dolphy Sound - I wonder why they sent that one to Jeff-PTTL and not to me, because I ordered that one too. Instead they sent me the Fiery Furnaces. Oh well. Maybe they just picked one CD at random from each order to mollify us?

two years pass...

Was reminded of this mad adrenaline rush today when I discovered a site called f!new!neh0me dotcom with a suspiciously amazing selection and everything at 70-80% off, plus some bottles listed at 60 cents (for 750ml). I filled my cart with several hundred dollars worth of rums and liqueurs (for $115), and it still didn't say "sorry, no" when I put in my MS zipcode. Then I searched for info about the site and it seems way too sketchy, so that's where I'll let it drop. Did all my looking behind a VPN and didn't give name or address, so I think I'm safe...?
