Please fill my empty life with something other than lies. Thank you.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 6 February 2005 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

We (voters) get the email tomorrow, right?

Thomas Inskeep (submeat), Sunday, 6 February 2005 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

What e-mail. (Thomas! Call me!)

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 6 February 2005 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember that last year, voters received an email with the results (or a link, or something) like a day before it streeted, I thought.

Thomas Inskeep (submeat), Sunday, 6 February 2005 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm. Not seeing it in my e-mail archives, though that doesn't always catch everything.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 6 February 2005 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

what albums came out last year again? snoop dog, coldplay, beck, shakira, and who else?

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 6 February 2005 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

oh yeah, kanye. i'm rooting for that guy. even though he hates gretchen wilson cuz she's a redneck. one of these days i might actually hear his album. is he on the superbowl half-time show tonight?

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 6 February 2005 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, he's showing his ass.

Yeah, I said it.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Sunday, 6 February 2005 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I contemplated leaving Kanye off my ballot, just to fuck shit up...

Hasn't Paul McCartney been suffering from some sort of malfunction since the Beatles broke up?

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Sunday, 6 February 2005 21:25 (twenty-one years ago)

The one album I've since realized I should have voted for is Franz Ferdinand. I'll feel awfully bad if its a photo finish.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 6 February 2005 21:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I still love everything I voted for, though, which is good.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 6 February 2005 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

my one bid to sit at the popular table was to vote for the fiery furnaces. that one will probably get a lot of votes. dontcha think?

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 6 February 2005 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope Nellie McKay makes the top 10. It'll definitely go top 40.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 6 February 2005 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually watched her EPK on Launch today. First time I've ever seen her talk. Gi-normous crush.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 6 February 2005 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually watched her EPK on Launch today. First time I've ever seen her talk. Gi-normous crush.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to fight you for her.

Matt Chesnut, Sunday, 6 February 2005 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

dude I give meaning to every day. You got no chance.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 6 February 2005 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not opposed to cheating, knives, or firearms. Also, I've been lifting weights and practicing pre-fight dialogue.

"Shall I kill you now or kill you later?"

Matt Chesnut, Sunday, 6 February 2005 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I contemplated leaving Kanye off my ballot, just to fuck shit up...

hahahaha!! Arthur, even though we disagree about Dirty Work and Rush, you rule.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Sunday, 6 February 2005 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope that both Nellie M and the Fiery Furnaces place high.

MV, Sunday, 6 February 2005 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Well Smashmouth got surprisngly high.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 6 February 2005 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I suspect Franz Ferdinand will finish scandalously high on the albums list.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Sunday, 6 February 2005 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm more concerned about them finishing scandalously high on the singles list.

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 6 February 2005 23:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Al otm

j blount (papa la bas), Sunday, 6 February 2005 23:42 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm so fucking worried that kanye is going to win. if he ever catches wind that he's the journofave of 2004, he'll never let us hear the end of it. 'SHOUT OUT TO SFJ! HOLLA BACK MICCIO', etc

i left him off purposely.

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Monday, 7 February 2005 06:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Rollie, you know he's gonna, though.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 7 February 2005 06:46 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, he's a lock. I don't think he'll be shouting out Anthony, though! and I doubt he'll bat an eye about the news, do you think the P&J matters to anyone who's up for a gazillion Grammys?

Al (sitcom), Monday, 7 February 2005 06:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I left him off because I heard about 20 better albums in 2004.

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Monday, 7 February 2005 06:50 (twenty-one years ago)

that's me FUCKING SHIT UP

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Monday, 7 February 2005 06:52 (twenty-one years ago)

he's a lock, for sure. i just think it's unfortunate.

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Monday, 7 February 2005 07:19 (twenty-one years ago)

there've been worse hip-hop albums to win it!

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 7 February 2005 08:08 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah well there have been worse things to happen than me spending all damn night steaming down wallpaper but that doesn't mean I can't bitch about it, dammit my hands are fried from that thing, I have glue in my hair, never again man, my wife can do this shit in the future if she wants a room painted

man this wallpaper steamer is like a slave ship

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Monday, 7 February 2005 08:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I really dont understand why you're shitting on Kanye, rollie, its a great album. Whats wrong w/ him winning?

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Monday, 7 February 2005 09:07 (twenty-one years ago)

david, it isn't a great album. it's average. it's a 5 or a 6, tops. it's the most overrated rap album of the decade so far, I'd say. When it first came out, I did like it but eventually, I lost interest track by track until I just gave it to my little sister for christmas.

compared to the shit he did before the album (the mixtape drops, 'niggas gossip', 'i met oprah winfrey', etc.), the full length ends up sounding really uninspired. six great songs doesn't make a classic for me. is it crazy that i don't see stars because some guy tops pitchshifted RZA loops with shitty snares and unfinished puns? i haven't even gotten started on his ridiculous fucking attitude.

i feel like we've had this argument before on here.

he shouldn't win because there were better albums this year, that's all. i'd prefer madvillain or john smith, if we're talking strictly rap. add the streets and dizzee if you want the fringers. him winning this year would set a pretty awful precedent for future rap entries.

someone want to mention past winners?

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Monday, 7 February 2005 10:19 (twenty-one years ago)

1992: Arrested Development, 3 Years, 5 Months and 2 Days in the Life of . . .

someone wanna say something about setting an awful precedent for future rap entries again?

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Monday, 7 February 2005 10:27 (twenty-one years ago)

2003: Outkast Speakerboxx/The Love Below

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 7 February 2005 10:28 (twenty-one years ago)

and just for reference, all past rap winners:

1980: Kurtis Blow, "The Breaks" (single)
1982: Grandmaster Flash & the Furious 5, "The Message" (single)
1986: Run-D.M.C., "Walk This Way" (single)
1988: Public Enemy, It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back (album)
1989: De La Soul, 3 Feet High & Rising (album)
Public Enemy, "Fight the Power" (single)
1992: Arrested Development, 3 Years, 5 Months and 2 Days in the Life of . . . (album)
Arrested Development, "Tennessee" (single)
1995: Coolio, "Gangsta's Paradise" (single)
2000: OutKast, Stankonia (album)
OutKast, "Ms. Jackson" (single)
2001: Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott, "Get Ur Freak On" (single)
2002: Missy Elliott, "Work It" (single)
2003: OutKast, Speakerboxxx/The Love Below (album)

ringers:
1985: Artists United Against Apartheid, "Sun City" (single) (not a rap record, but there are rappers on it)
1994: Beck, "Loser" (single) (well, he does rap on it)
1996: Quad City DJs, "C'mon and Ride It (The Train)" (single) (it's been so long since I heard this I don't remember if it's a rap song or not; I'm remembering it as one but I'm probably wrong)
2003: OutKast, "Hey Ya!" (single) (not a rap song)

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Monday, 7 February 2005 10:36 (twenty-one years ago)

the "pitchshifted RZA loops" thing is pretty specious.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Monday, 7 February 2005 10:40 (twenty-one years ago)

man arrested development SWEPT!!! i totally forgot that. "tennesee" is a great song though. quad city dj's are like the 69 mets of p&j.

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 7 February 2005 10:48 (twenty-one years ago)

The first two Arrested Development albums are staple items in every charity shop in London.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 7 February 2005 10:52 (twenty-one years ago)

man that 80 ballot's pretty impressive - "the breaks" wins, young marble giants at 25 on import, a smokey robinson lp i'm curious about now, pylon - YES! - on the singles list. not nearly as rockistboring as you'd figure it'd have to be surely, not nearly as much as this year's i'd reckon.

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 7 February 2005 11:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Forgive me for asking, but what's an unfinished pun?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 7 February 2005 12:26 (twenty-one years ago)

It's like when some photographers started a

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 February 2005 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

well, i voted for kanye. it's a bloody good album and in a year of pretty middling releases, one that stood out for me hugely. the "sped-up rza loops" comment is out of nowhere for me, but kanye's attitude is pretty fucking irritating. anyway, whtever wins it, people are going to fucking moan, but i'm betting a good few of my choices don't get a look in. then again i did make a few tactical decisions, especially in the singles.

stelfox, Monday, 7 February 2005 13:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Arrested Development're touring here in a few weeks. I have no idea why. Or how, really.

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 7 February 2005 13:28 (twenty-one years ago)

six great songs doesn't make a classic for me.

Not a classic, no, but six great songs sounds pretty damn good to me. (It was my #8).

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 7 February 2005 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

(Although I do realize that based on the way the poll works, Kanye will get to #1 on the strength of it being a lot of people's #8s.)

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 7 February 2005 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Somebody joked that Arrested Development could've won P&J that year just by submitting their photo.

Isn't Kanye-Loretta-B. Wilson a good win-place-show bet? (Brian gets the Dylan contingent.)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 7 February 2005 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

This thread has to pop up on Monday morning when I'm on deadline. . .

Is it possible for ANY record to actually get the kind of consensus needed to top Pazz and Jop and not have a huge backlash of people complaining about how boring and predictable and rockist it all is? I think the PnJ consensus gets it right about half the time (Love and Theft-right, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot-horribly wrong, Love Below/Speakerboxxx-wrong, Kanye-right). But looking at Matos past rap winner list, I voted Kanye #1 and don't think it's as good as Nation or 3 Feet High and Rising. College Dropout vs. Stankonia is a tougher choice for me.

predix:
1. Kanye
2. Franz Ferdinand
3. Loretta Lynn
4. Brain Wilson
5. U2

chris herrington (chris herrington), Monday, 7 February 2005 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

It'll be interesting to see how Big and Rich and Gretchen Wilson fare, since the poll tends to reward art/commerce combos of that ilk but has a big blind spot for country.

chris herrington (chris herrington), Monday, 7 February 2005 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

chris herrington's top five seems close to dead on, but I think Wilson will be 2 and U2 third; top single: take me out. maps could do well if it gets last year's votes. float on, both yeahs, jesus walks also in top 10, I guess.

scott pl. (scott pl.), Monday, 7 February 2005 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

obstradamus says: GREEN DAY in TOP FIVE SHOCK

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Monday, 7 February 2005 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I keep forgetting about that Green Day record because I never got a chance to hear it and couldn't work up much interest anyway, but according to Entertainment Weekly, they're "saving" rock and roll, so they've got that going for them.

chris herrington (chris herrington), Monday, 7 February 2005 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Rollie, more info on the John Smith...is it the one on the Peanuts & Corn label? I haven't had a chance to hear it yet, but all the stuff they put out surprises me. (I actually knew the guys who started it when they were just a bunch of teenagers getting started, and having watched 'em get to this point has been cool. mcenroe probably hates me, but I still loved disenfranchised, and think he's generally doing a great thing with the label.)

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 7 February 2005 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Is How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb really that well loved? I mean, maybe it is and I just haven't been paying attention; I usually tune out U2 chatter.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 7 February 2005 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Remember that the makeup of the P&J voting list has changed substantially over the last number of years because there are a lot more voters now, which makes it that much harder for obscurities on the order of Pylon to really rise so far up these days, I'd guess.

I'm almost tempted to say that Brian Wilson, Loretta Lynn and Franz Ferdinand will be fighting it out for #1 on the albums chart but that Kanye will probably take #1 single.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 7 February 2005 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

hey matos left "reasons to be cheerful pt 3" by ian dury (#1 single 1979, at least as rap as "loser") off his rap ringer winners list.

live from kazakhstan, Monday, 7 February 2005 16:27 (twenty-one years ago)

HOLLA BACK MICCIO

I think I submitted the comment "Kanye's voice is ass" (all I have to say about him, really). I hope it runs now!

miccio (miccio), Monday, 7 February 2005 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I voted for How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb. It was either 9 or 10 on my list. It was the only big mainstream record on my albums list.

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Monday, 7 February 2005 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

oskar shindig! (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 7 February 2005 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

kanye needs his own award ceremony for best critical fellatio of the college dropout.

ppp, Monday, 7 February 2005 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

The Killers maybe on the singles list, probably not on the albums.

That Loretta Lynn album will almost certainly place in the albums list, probably top 20.

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Monday, 7 February 2005 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't wanna think it, jaymc, but I am. I'd replace Joanna Newsom w/ them.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 7 February 2005 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

the idea that Bono is anymore pompous or (cough) "evil" than anyone else who's really really famous is hilarious.

yes, I did forget "Reasons to Be Cheerful," duh!

devendra? animal collective?

top 20? in P&J? no friggin' way.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Monday, 7 February 2005 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

MIA/Diplo will probably be on the albums list, though probably not above 30.

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Monday, 7 February 2005 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Or tomorrow.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 7 February 2005 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Jody: the Loretta Lynn record completely blew away all competition in the Country Music Critics' Poll, many of whose voters will be in P & J. I know you hate it though.

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Monday, 7 February 2005 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

i haven't even heard it except for the single!

oskar shindig! (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 7 February 2005 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

That song "Portland, Oregon" with Jack White is pretty amazing, but the rest of the album, err, not so much. Not for me, anyway.

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Monday, 7 February 2005 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I liked it, but I probably haven't listened to it in six months so it's really not that memorable.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Monday, 7 February 2005 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Things Bono beats most other really really famous people at being:
1) Smug
2) Irritating
3) Able to ruin things that should be no-brainers for me to like (a decent rhythm section; that Bukowski doc; the entire notion of charity itself)

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Monday, 7 February 2005 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Somehow I get the impression that Dave M doesn't watch/read much in the way of celebrity news programs.

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Monday, 7 February 2005 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry--I'm not trying at all to turn this into a flamewar (I'm friends w/Dave M., fer god's sake!) and, haha, if he doesn't do those things, Matthew, his gain!

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Monday, 7 February 2005 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Won't many voters share in Bob Xgau's recent proclamation that Green Day and E Smith albums are duds? (MoveOnism and mourning to partly compensate for sure.)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 7 February 2005 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I reeeeally doubt it, esp. since Christgau routinely dislikes stuff other crits consensus-like--see Wilco, Daft Punk, Dr. Dre, pre-Kid A Radiohead, loads more.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Monday, 7 February 2005 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

For real. I think that it must be kinda great to have a frame of reference limited enough so that you'd be inclined to consider Bono THE most smug, irritating celebrity in the world.

That Green Day album got a lot of really glowing reviews in mainstream publications.

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Monday, 7 February 2005 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah and Christgau said all that about a month after ballots had to be in, he's pokey

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Monday, 7 February 2005 21:35 (twenty-one years ago)

For some reason, I was a lot less excited about my top 10 this year than last year. Even my annual ritual -- sitting down the second and third weeks of December and just plowing into a ton of CDs that I hadn't had time to listen to already -- seemed less fun. Is it the pathetic case of yet another music writer suffering 30-something burnout, or was it just a sadly soporific year for music?

Mr Deeds (Mr Deeds), Monday, 7 February 2005 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm mostly curious to see if anything I voted for made the list except for U2 and Scissor Sisters.

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Monday, 7 February 2005 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

My year-end catch-up was pretty nonexistent this year, but more because I had a baby (or, rather, my wife did) smack in the middle of PnJ ballot time than a lack of interest or enthusiasm. That said, I do think it was at least a slightly below par year.

How many people had #1 records -- whatever the record may have been -- that would have topped their list last year, or the year before, or the year before that? I didn't.

chris herrington (chris herrington), Monday, 7 February 2005 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

xgau can tip his hands sometimes, preview upcoming p&j results in beginning of the year consumer guides (my guess is seeing results he'll either go 'ok, i should check that out' or 'people are actually buying into that? apparently i need to weigh in' or 'yay people are actually buying into that! add me to the chorus!').

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 7 February 2005 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Blount OTM -- I imagine Arcade Fire and Joanna Newsom did pretty well in PnJ (especially the latter, which I'm guessing he reviewed in direct response to the ballots)

chris herrington (chris herrington), Monday, 7 February 2005 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Not to mention Elliott Smith, The Killers, U2, Tom Waits, and Green Day.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 7 February 2005 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

(All of whom showed up in Consumer Guide this past week.)

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 7 February 2005 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah I couldn't remember what was past the pick hits and was too lazy to look.

chris herrington (chris herrington), Monday, 7 February 2005 22:02 (twenty-one years ago)

So, does this happen tomorrow afternoon? Does anyone know?

chris herrington (chris herrington), Monday, 7 February 2005 22:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 7 February 2005 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I think that it must be kinda great to have a frame of reference limited enough so that you'd be inclined to consider Bono THE most smug, irritating celebrity in the world.

I only pay attention to Canadian celebrities (TOP STORY: AVRIL DOMINATES JUNO NOMINATIONS). My bubble of reference is even smaller than yours!

(but really no offence taken, matt & matos)

Dave M. (rotten03), Monday, 7 February 2005 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

los lonely boys' album dates from summer 2003, but might have gotten enough votes in both years to put it top 50

prince might squeak into the top 20 but I'm guessing it'll be #29

usher will be a victim of three factors: 1) the tendency to see most young black pop artists as primarily singles acts; 2) his teen-heartthrob status, which makes him less "serious" than others; 3) all those dumb-ass tracks that clogged up the end of the album

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Monday, 7 February 2005 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm with Sourpuss. Usher might not even crack the Top 40 albums but might have three top 40 singles, and "Yeah" might win.

chris herrington (chris herrington), Monday, 7 February 2005 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Monday, 7 February 2005 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

does the "hilarious" imply that Kanye didn't win? Wouldn't you Kanye detractors prefer him to U2 or Brian Wilson?

(Next year there should be a predict the Top 40 pool, a la NCAA tournament pools!)

okay, here's an interesting question to ponder: of all the singles to finish in the top 40, which one got the most reissue votes?

alpha motherfucker, Monday, 7 February 2005 22:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Didn't Suit sell a million or so more copies than Sweat? I can't remember if I read that in a newspaper or I'm just imagining that I did.

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Monday, 7 February 2005 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

oops, i meant the most remix votes! (unless you count "reissue votes" as "2003 carryover votes", which you can if you want. and which is another question entirely, applicable to albums as well.)

alpha motherfucker, Monday, 7 February 2005 22:34 (twenty-one years ago)

"which one got the most reissue votes"

I assume you mean reissued albums, alpha motherfucker.

If so, count on The Name of this Band is Talking Heads topping the list. Everyone loved it; I almost included it in mine.

I wasn't aware of the difference being that extreme, but Suit is definitely selling more, thanks to having the big hit singles.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 February 2005 23:30 (twenty-one years ago)

the sales disparity between Suit and Sweat is huuuuuge. Suit is double platinum, Sweat might not even be platinum once yet (I read the numbers last week, can't seem the find them right now). Suit's 2 singles are way bigger than "Flap Your Wings" or anything else on Sweat.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 7 February 2005 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I think he'll break at least a couple of singles off "Sweat" before this is all done. He's regained hella momentum, mostly thanks to "Over and Over" kicking 100% of my ass.

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Monday, 7 February 2005 23:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Sweat's already had 3 singles/videos. 2 of them did nothing (although I loved "Na-Nana-Na"). it's sunk way down on Billboard and I doubt it's coming back up, while Suit stays in the top 10.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 00:09 (twenty-one years ago)

top 20, I meant to say.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 00:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it just because Sweat doesn't have a strong single, or do people just not like the album? For some reason I haven't bothered with either of them in spite of liking his last two albums.

I guess it seems pretty obvs to guess which direction he's going to be taking his career in now, huh?

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Tuesday, 8 February 2005 00:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's mostly about the singles. if Sweat had something as big as "Hot In Herre" it'd be a totally different story, I'm sure. but also he had a pretty MOR audience to begin with, and if he's gonna cater to pop radio with really soft records they're gonna respond to that more than they do to the club records.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 01:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, Miccio's got skillz.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 01:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 01:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm really trying to figure out what kind of skillz on display on this thread you're referring to. M. Doughty-impression skillz? imaginary shoutouts from Kanye skillz? Bono pic posting skillz?

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 05:38 (twenty-one years ago)

no way u2 and Green Day that low on the album list, and Prince will make top 40. Bjork ALWAYS finishes higher on pazz and jop than I think possible, so I won't question that. I also don't see Jesus Walks winning the singles poll -- 99 Problems, Yeah, and Take Me Out more likely

chris herrington (chris herrington), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 05:52 (twenty-one years ago)

no way Dirt Off Your Shoulder. and I think people are overestimating Usher on singles, if all the ILM/Stylus/Pitchfork polls are any indication.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 05:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, apart from a few odd placements, Josh's lists don't look that nutty to me.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 06:00 (twenty-one years ago)

At first glance, that is.

no way u2 and Green Day that low on the album list

Modest Mouse will be higher, too. Prob. top 10.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 06:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Is there a way we can all post predicted top 40 (or 10), then after the results finally arrive tomorrow, tabulate whose list is the closest to reality? (Points are given for the disparity between a record's estimated and actual rank; the lowest total score wins.)

Or make predictions about the point spreads of the 1-2-3 positions?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 06:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean, if we're gonna do the guessing game, we mightaswell put some oomph to it.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 06:10 (twenty-one years ago)

1) I really hope Bono saves the Third World, but I doubt that it will improve his music. 2) You led "a more pretentious version of Cake"? You really do have skillz! 3) Don't forget when Soul II Soul won.4) Michael, won't Glenn MacDonald tabulate all that again? And whoever's list is furthest from "reality" wins? Let it still be, as Paulie snag last night!

i'ver heard 6 of 50. Voted for 2 of 50. (Big & Rich and Fiery Furnaces) Okay, it's official, me and chuck single-handedly put big and rich in the top 40 (i think we were the only two that gave it 30 points).

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

anyone want to post the singles list?

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't wait to see how many of the 28 Junior Boys voters are ILXors.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

at least 27 methinks

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, no, Last Exit got a lot of press everywhere. I think they were in Rolling Stone at least twice last year. M.I.A./Diplo is probably the one with the highest percentage of ILM voters.

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

The points-per-vote of the top 10:

Kanye West 11.5
Brian Wilson 12.4
Loretta Lynn 10.8
Franz Ferdinand 10.7
Green Day 11.7
Arcade Fire 11.1
Streets 10.6
U2 10.7
Modest Mouse 10.3
Dangermouse 11

I *knew* Smile would get a much stronger points-per showing and that College Dropout, like jaymc said, would go #1 based on everybody putting it on the low end of their album ballots.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

except that it still has the 3rd highest points-per-vote avg. of the top 10

but still, it's the fact that it appeared on 50% more ballots than Smile or Van lear Rose that clinched it. I really didn't think it would be that much of a landslide actually. I thought Brian would have been nipping on Kanye's heels.

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

There were at least 16 ILxors that I could track down who came forward and said they voted for MIA -- that's about a third of MIA's total votes.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

If that's the real list, someone lied to me!

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

except that it still has the 3rd highest points-per-vote avg. of the top 10

But the points-per-vote avg. difference between Kanye and Brian is nearly one whole point, which as these things go, is kinda impressive.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I retire.

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

and that College Dropout, like jaymc said, would go #1 based on everybody putting it on the low end of their album ballots.

actually, there's very little variation in the points-per-ballot numbers of those top 10 (and of the entire top 50 for that matter), and if anything, college dropout is well above the average. so i'm not sure the math supports your theory.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost: Yeah, Smile was already one of a lot of people's favorite albums of all time before the year began, so it was pretty inevitable that it received a lot of #1 votes.

asl, Tuesday, 8 February 2005 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

3 albums I picked made the top 50 but I'm a big fan of another 6 or 7 or 8 of the albums. And the few that I know are complete crap were locks to appear. Nellie made the top 15!

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, of the top 40, the only other album with a 12-or-more-points-per-vote is the Hold Steady (and that's actually 11.97), whereas everything else is in the 8 to 11 range, with the lower rungs of the chart showing greater variations, mostly towards the low end (8) of points.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I may make a list of everyone who voted for American Idiot AND How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb. For the hell of it.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

0 for 10 in the top ten for me! Woohoo!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm shocked so many critics voted for U2; the reviews were pretty mixed. And I'm surprised Dizzee scored so low: could votes for the tewo albums have cancelled him out? And what's with Sonic Youth at #37?

Oh well. I'm kinda happy that 7 of my selections made the Top 40.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Overall out of those fifty I voted for Moz, Dizzee, Mountain Goats and Devendra. That seems about right.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Two for me -- Kanye and MIA. I'm so mainstream and shit.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

You 'orrible canonist. Out, out!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude, if I was any more out-er...uh...I'd be...behind me?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

If that's correct (and it sure looks right) I voted for 6 of the top 50 -- 3 in the top 10 and the other three below #30. AS I've said on another thread, I'll be on the "ILM sex offenders registry" this year of critics who voted for Kanye and no other hip-hop records.

chris herrington (chris herrington), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

do people know the results yet? can't be arsed to read the the thread

stelfox, Tuesday, 8 February 2005 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, of the top 40, the only other album with a 12-or-more-points-per-vote is the Hold Steady (and that's actually 11.97), whereas everything else is in the 8 to 11 range

none of which supports an argument that kanye won by being on the low end of a lot of ballots. rather, it just means there was a specific spike for brian wilson, and he managed to beat out loretta for #2 by having some really passionate voters. kanye had a way-above-average score himself, meaning he presumably was on the high end of most ballots that named him.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd be too were it not for the fact that the Trick Daddy album had a couple songs on it that made me cry (same with Kanye), always a good sign.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

s-puss where's the beef? or better-- wait for it-- where's the deef?

Nick Sylvester, Tuesday, 8 February 2005 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

rather, it just means there was a specific spike for brian wilson, and he managed to beat out loretta for #2 by having some really passionate voters.

Well, OK: it does seem like there's stronger evidence for a Brian-spike than weak Kanye support. The former actually interests me more.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Since this was my first year voting, it's fun to look at the list and see how the order would change if I hadn't voted: namely, Animal Collective and Joanna Newsom would've TIED for #20, Sonic Youth would've dropped two places to #39, and Junior Boys would've dropped one place to #42.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't even know what a deef is, Nick!

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I have to admit that, even given last year's list, I was sorta expecting something a little more, ah....hip-hop/R&B heavy, I guess?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

but what logical albums were ignored, Mike? I can't think of that many crit-crossover praised hip-hop albums that aren't on there?

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Trick Daddy and Wiley are the two I would have been happy to see.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I voted for U2 but I kinda wish that I didn't. I was hemming and hawwing about it, and ended up putting it on cos I didn't want to look back and the list and think that I was a wuss for not putting it on. Now I feel like a jerk for putting that on and leaving Ghostface out. I like both records about equally.

My votes helped Fiery Furnaces (my #1, duh), Dizzee Rascal, Scissor Sisters, and MIA/Diplo.

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Tuesday, 8 February 2005 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I think that if Alicia Keys hadn't been released in late 2003 that would have had a better shot. Also if Marvin Gaye was alive or if Public Enemy came back, or if people stopped listening to indie rock.

Usher and Alicia Keys both actually higher than I expected. So many of the likely mainstream hip-hop records came out so late in the year that that might be a factor.

Yeah, exactly.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm willing to bet Cam'ron gets late-breaking '05 votes, though unless it goes mega it probably won't make the top 40 (maybe 50, a la Alicia Keys or Justin Timberlake)

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

man I should have voted for Usher. USHER STOP HAVING CRAP TUNES ON OTHERWISE-GREAT ALBUMS PLEASE.

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Big & Rich would not have cracked the Top 40 had I not voted, so I feel good about that.

chris herrington (chris herrington), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno Devin got NO hype outside of ILX that I saw (forgot about it! love it too). Lil Jon, Camron and Snoop Dogg are all kind of ultra-misogynist aren't they? Should we be canonizing their album tracks?

Maybe the Game would have had a chance if he didn't have Do Not Listen If You Do Not Care About G-Unit stamped on his forehead.

I'm still not sure I understand what an RJD2 is.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I knew people were nuts to expect Elliott Smith in the top 10. even tragic circumstances can't force but the corniest critics to overlook its weaknesses.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:06 (twenty-one years ago)

also Nas and T.I. on end-of-year hip-hop records. I didn't vote for any of these records (Devin almost, but that wasn't late-breaking) and haven't even acquired a lot of them (a big part of the problem, obv.), but I sure would prefer a list where they had more of a presence.

chris herrington (chris herrington), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay so what's the strategy for having a really high-placing album on this poll? Clearly, one way is to be a hip-hop act that criticizes black people and/or black music (last two years). Another way is to be a septuagenarian country music person hooking up with a younger and "cool" indie icon (L.Lynn, J. Cash). Also, be Brian Wilson. Any others?

when were ballots due for this? late Dec/early Jan? still, I'm not surprised that any of the big Nov/Dec hip hop releases made it, except for maybe Cam'ron (no way T.I. or Nas were getting on there). and Cam definitely won't carry votes into 05, with all the label/promotion fuckups on that record he'll be lucky if another single gets pushed, so people won't think to vote next year.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

>Shatner 156th.
-- Dr Morbius (wjwe...),
>in a 4-way tie at #139!

Really, as a 25-year reader of this poll, it's a lot easier than you might think, and a waltz compared to the Oscar pool.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm pretty thrilled about Annie's placement on the singles chart. "Chewing Gum" was my #1 single.

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm shocked! And gratified (and pissed that I didn't hear "Heartbeat" two months before I did, otherwise I'd have made it my no. 1)

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

my exclamation point wasn't expressing surprise. I thought your estimate of 156 was conservative to begin with.

(x-post)

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I find it hard to believe that 90% of the people who have/voted for MIA/Diplo didn't download it.

And? Technology bad? Internet sucky-suck?

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

What? Only one other critic voted for Chromeo?
:hangs head in shame:

Mr Deeds (Mr Deeds), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I was rebutting Matthew's point that it was sold in some stores, my point was that it was largely an internet phenomenon, for better or worse (I say worse).

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn. None of my comments made the cut.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

and I was being jokingly immature about hating the internet's effect on these polls, just because I don't like those 2 records. (xpost)

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I now wish that I would have laid more (than 10) points on Big & Rich. I thought they'd finish higher.

Mr Deeds (Mr Deeds), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

the high placement of "Breathe" and especially "Why" (which noone seemed to rate highly besides me in stuff like the Gov't Names poll) is surprising.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

ahh, i fucked up... i forgot that votes for comps weren't going to be counted so my point distribution is meaningless.

stockholm cindy's secret childhood (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm the only person to vote for Maxi Geil & Playcolt (you're all a bunch of fools, basically!), and they put the cover of a Maxi Priest album next to it on the page for the record.

God forbid people vote for an album like Piracy Funds Terrorism which is fucking amazing and much better than the majority of records from 2004 just because it was FROM THE INTERNET and that hurts some peoples' feelings.

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Gotcha, Al. Carry on wayward etc. (Matthew, Al's explanation up there explains he was taking the piss.)

I thought "Why" was HUGE! That VH1 Best Week Ever show dedicated a whole segment to it! (How I gauge hugeness might be questionable, mind you.)

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

YO, ME AND ANTHONY DECURTIS AND DAVID FRICKE AND PARKE PUTERBAUGH BE VOTIN' FOR R.E.M.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

somebody has to

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Only Jody Beth and I voted for I Remember Syria!!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't for the life of me comprehend why Gretchen Wilson gets more love than Big & Rich from the crossover critical cowpoke wannabes.

Mr Deeds (Mr Deeds), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

tighter album, (even) better songs

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

well B&R was higher on albums but Gretchen was higher on singles. I think B&R gets more critlove overall but Gretchen sold a lot more records so it get skewed a little.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

(that's why I voted it higher, anyway)

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Only people who don't know anything about hip-hop would vote for the Grey Album over the Black Album.

Like Greg Tate.

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

mega x-post: yeah, David, "Why" was big, and I guess I shouldn't be surprised given the similiar high placement of "Mosh". but man, NYC hip hop still has a stranglehold on this poll, is nowhere else. not counting "Yeah"/"Goodies", no southern hip hop made the top 40 singles ("Rubber Band Man" at 47), which is full of Jada/Fab/Fat Joe/Jay-Z.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

"Yeah!"

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Only people who don't know anything about hip-hop would vote for the Grey Album over the Black Album

along with, oh, maybe, those people who actually like it better.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Didn't Thru the Wire come out in '03? I don't understand how that song could place lower than all the other singles from that album unless it's because it is really from '03.

Scott CE (Scott CE), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll be the first to admit that Big & Rich's album fades hard after "Save a Horse." I rarely listen past that song. But it seems more inventive — and kicks more ass -- to me. I voted for "Redneck Woman" in singles, but there's no way that Wilson's album holds a candle to Big & Rich's best stuff.
Meh.

Mr Deeds (Mr Deeds), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

"Through The Wire" debuted on a mixtape in late '02, had a 12" and video by the end of summer '03, and had started getting a lot of radio spins by the end of '03. (xpost)

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

fact checker, check your facts and read the rest of my post.

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Out of my top 10 albums and top 10 singles, only one of them actually wound up IN the top 10 -- and that was "Take Me Out".

Oh, wait. Oops.

Stupornaut (natepatrin), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

(x-post)
um, i read the whole thing, all two sentences of it, right down to the punchline about mr. tate! what facts am i missing here?

fact checking cuz (fcc), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i thought it would be more clear that since greg tate, one of the most important figures in hip-hop journalism history, voted for the grey album instead of the black album, that that would kind of take the piss out of the argument stated above that it was some kind of sign of impending apocalypse that the grey album finished higher.

sorry for (perhaps willful) obscurism.

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, shit, i was missing something! your sarcasm. really! we appear to agree on this point.

me in missing-point-while-checking-facts shockah. sorry!

fact checking cuz (fcc), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean, it kinda pisses me off too, but it's just Jay-Z, and he still finished about a million points higher than anyone I voted for, so whatevz

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

possible alternate thread title: "why don't a few hundred critics collectively like the music i like"

artdamages (artdamages), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah I'm not crying for Jay. Black Album isn't even as good as a lot of his albums that fared far worse on P&J. but maaan, fuck the Grey Album.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

possible alternate thread title: "don't blame me, I voted for Dungen"

Stupornaut (natepatrin), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't have time to fully digest this all today, godammit, but a quick glimpse inspires two comments:

I totally forgot REM even released an album last year.

And, Matt -- you've never been more wrong than about "Remember When," which SO isn't one of those "nostalgia for the good ol' days that never were" songs.

chris herrington (chris herrington), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Dear Jon Caramanica, please stop biting my style singles ballot. Or is it me?

Yeah, okay. It's me.
