"Snowball" + singles - Field Mice. Can't stop playing it. May well have underestimated it in my undying and enduring love for "Skywriting". Admittedly, it's not as good (or varied) as "Skywriting", but it's not as bad as I thought it was either. Also have finally got to hear "That's all this is", which became my anthem for last week when life got shittier and shittier as the week went on.

Rob M (Rob M), Monday, 7 February 2005 11:23 (twenty years ago)

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 11:49 (twenty years ago)

Lil Jon - Roll Call / What you gon' do (CD Single)
v/a - Salsoul 30
v/a - Folk is not a four letter word

The last of those is an Andy Votel compiled LP of dark/acid folk obscurities from the early 70s. It takes off from where the first part of disc 2 of Saint Etienne's "The Trip" left off. It's patchy, to be honest, but with Linda Perhacs, Wendy & Bonnie and The Poppy Family all featuring, I'm certainly not complaining.

Warners/Rhino compilations including:Hallucinations and Come To The Sunshine (both comps of late '60s US pop-psych 45s, both delicious)
I want Come To The Sunshine but because it's a Rhino Handmade thing it's on the expensive side - HMV wanted £25 or something of that order for it!!

Jeff W (zebedee), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

Various Artists: Sahret Ataba Wa Mijana (Lebanese & maybe Syrian folkloric music, sometimes with some electronics thrown in (not usually thrown in well)--pretty good, I was worried after the first track, but the later tracks appear to be good)
Al Turath Ensemble: Jasmin Garden (Traditional Syrian music with a covering featuring decadent oriental voluptuaries)
Husein Sabsaby: Taqasim Oud 2004 (Syrian oudist doing oud solos within the tradition of improvising on particular maqamat)

RS £aRue (rockist_scientist), Thursday, 10 February 2005 23:08 (twenty years ago)

Telephone Thing, Friday, 11 February 2005 17:24 (twenty years ago)

I'm after having bought some bargains, bejabbers:

FOPPsters check out these:
£3 - The Associates, Fourth Drawer Down (80s music which is actually GOOD for a change)
£3 - U Roy + Various, With a Flick of My Musical Wrist (typical Trojan comp., wonderful and irritatiing by turns, conclusive proof that, despite the close proximity of Cuba, Jamaicans can't do Hispanic accents)

Got this elsewhere:
£4.99 - Guided By Voices, Under the Bushes, Under the Stars (the last time indie guitar music was worth a fuck)

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 14:12 (twenty years ago)

m83 - 'before the dawn...'

bushwick bill - 'little big man' and 'phantom of the rapra'

But the copy of "Doing it for the kids" has finally been sold from the charity shop. I'm so disappointed.

Anyway, "(Maybe it's right to be nervous now)" by Magazine, for a tenner. Nice.

Cake: 'The Distance' 7"
The Game: 'The Documentary'
V/A: 'Run The Road'
Antony & The Johnsons: I Am A Bird Now
Bright Eyes: 'I'm Wide Awake It's Morning'.

Jay-Kid (Jay-Kid), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

the Extra Glenns, 'Martial Arts Weekend' - kinda tossed off, not one of j0hn's stronger sets of songs, but it was half price!

Low, 'I Could Live In Hope' - yes i finally have this, it's absolutely gorgeous. It's neat to hear how much Alan has grown as a singer, when compared to the Great Destroyer.

Azita, 'Life On the Fly' - really solid.

derrick (derrick), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 15:59 (twenty years ago)

Paddy McAloon - I Trawl The MEGAHERTZ (nice, very sentimental)
Ornette Coleman - The Shape of Jazz To Come
Berio - Sinfonia (Electric Phoenix version -- just ok, not as good as the '69 Berio / Swingle)
Phthalocyanine - No One Said You Didn't
Robert Rutman - 1939
Miles Davis - Dark Magus
Tangerine Dream - Phaedra (remaster)
Gilbert Amy - une Saison en enfer

Rizz (Rizz), Monday, 21 February 2005 05:06 (twenty years ago)

Snow Patrol- Final Straw
Postal Service - Give Up

I don't like either album, to be honest. Bought both after I went to store specifically to get Devotchka, of which there was none, figured i'd get these instead ("rebound" purchasing is BAD news, never ever do this)...and am now dismayed by my lack of taste. Especially where Postal Service is concerned. I think I'm the last person to find out how annoying this album really is. It just makes me angry. ENOUGH WITH THE BEEPING!

Miles Davis -- On the Corner

How is it? I have literally every record surrounding it, but I've always been turned off by the cover or something. How is it compared to Bitches Brew & Jack Johnson?

"Miles Davis -- On the Corner

This is fucking amazing. Morris on Banjo and Banjouke, Parker on zintir, and Drake entirely on frame drum. None of them play their standard instruments on this album, and the result is quite astounding.

Jonathan (Jonathan), Sunday, 27 February 2005 05:33 (twenty years ago)

Radiance is old (1999). It's on Hopscotch (a label you should check out if you don't already know it--well, it's basically just Assif Tsahar and friends (& x-wife)). The line-up is Charles Burnham (who I don't know of) on violin, Cooper-Moore (who I want to hear more by) on piano, harp & diddley-bo, and Susie Ibarra on drums & percussion. She's pretty consistent about using violin in her own work, which is notable. It doesn't seem like as much of a unity as Songbird Suite or Folkloriko.

I keep putting on Radiance right before I start doing laundry, and then the washing machine is so loud I never really get to hear it. I think it's good though.

The only recordshop in my town is just plain torture: bad service and a very bad selection. From now on I'll order things. :-(

nathalie barefoot in the head (stevie nixed), Thursday, 3 March 2005 10:52 (twenty years ago)

Woo! That Opal record just this minute came in the mail! Looks in pretty good condition. The CD of that album goes for £££.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 3 March 2005 11:06 (twenty years ago)

The only recordshop in my town is just plain torture: bad service and a very bad selection. From now on I'll order things

Tell me about it! Same thing here, but they also do things like charge 18.98 for Led Zeppelin 4. There's no way I'm paying that much for a CD I've heard 985467 times. I mean they even charge 12-13.98 for nice price shit!
Also they have an annoying habit of stocking outdated editions when there's been a reissue and clean versions, so you really have to watch what you buy! Not to mention the fact that the used CD bins only contain the lamest possible shit ever: Richard Marx, Invisible Touch-era Genesis (not one 70's Gen. CD in the whole store, mind you. Come to think of it, if a band has notoriously bad albums, they're more likely to stock those than the good ones in the new section. Live Coverdale-era Deep Purple but no "In Rock" or "Fireball", wtf.) and various crap so bad that no one has ever heard of it. Let's not even speak about the non pop/rock section...I feel like anything good I get there is has been stocked entirely by accident.
Main Street Music & Video in Willits this means you! You fucking suck, get one clue! I hope you google yourselves and see this, because hundreds of dollars of my money has gone to online retailers that you could have if you didn't let deaf monkeys run your inventory!
OK, I'm done I think.

I just got this and am only up to the second track. Cesar Pedroso is an x-member of Los Van Van, and this seems to continue in the vein of, say, Llego Van Van, though maybe more consistently upbeat, less talky, if that makes sense. I like the sound of the band, for the most part. I'm a hard sell when it comes to new (any?) Cuban music, but I think I'm going to like this.

RS £aRue (rockist_scientist), Monday, 7 March 2005 22:56 (twenty years ago)

Rumor has it that the new Los Van Van (not officially released in the U.S. yet and maybe not even outside of Cuba yet) album kicks ass, and the ubiquitous El Cigala guests.

RS £aRue (rockist_scientist), Monday, 7 March 2005 22:59 (twenty years ago)

3/4 of the way through: I'll still take decent PR/US/Colombian/Venezuelan, etc. salsa over this. At least I like the timbral palate here better than I do in Van Van: the horn section sounds really good to me, for whatever reason, and the violin is way in the back. (I know, "Give it a chance!")

Choying Drolma/Steve Tibetts: Selwa

When I first put this on, just now, it felt a little too much like being in Garland of Letters (local New Age bookstore), but this singing is pretty and interesting. Some of the programmed rhythm (I guess it's programmed) that comes in and out reminds me a bit of the sort of thing Jon Hassel would do.

Quite inexplicably, I knee-jerkishly bought the re-releases (via the Collectables Records label) of Duty Now for the Future and New Traditionalists by Devo....despite the fact that I already had the Infinite Zero re-release of New Traditionalists (which at least had a few extra tracks and some interesting liner notes) and the import double-up of the VERY SAME TWO ALBUMS!. So, I now have New Traditionalists -- not even one of their better albums -- on CD THREE TIMES! YEAH, YA NEED THAT!!!!!

I've clearlly misplaced my marbles.

George Delgado: Mi Ritmo Llego
Dorance Lorza: Salsa Pa' Ti

A while back I directly ordered a couple Cooper-Moore CDs from hopscotch records since I never see them on sale anywhere, wondered to myself about whether they might not be on tour as I was ordering, and then sure enough saw a write-up in AAJ the folowing day about Asif Tsahar and Cooper-Moore being on tour in Europe. Ordered something else that I thought would be here by now.

RS £aRue (rockist_scientist), Thursday, 31 March 2005 17:14 (twenty years ago)

The Dorance Lorza is very nice so far. (Interrupted by electrician noise which led me to put on some reggaeton.)

This is totally one of the best salsa CDs from last year (better than 75% of the Grammy list). And yeah, it's covers, but so was most of Spanish Harlem Orchestra's albums, and the approach here is a little more unusual.

Enzo Avitabile & Bottai: Salvamm'o Minno/Save the World. I suppose that since this brings together a whole bunch of musicians from different countries and a percentage of the profits goes to Amnesty International, this is quintessentially "world music" in a way that might turn people off. So far, I like it. The mix of musicians is held together pretty well by an overarching musical sensibility. Guests include: Khaled, Manu Dibango, Hugh Masekela, Amina, Simon Shaheen, Baba Sissoko, Bachir Mizmar, Luigi Lai, Zi Giannio del Sorbo, and Cantori del Miserere di Sessa.

Dark! (with some boring stretches). It's filed next to Pan Sonic, Autechre & Squarepusher CD's, make of that what you will. I like it but I think it killed off my interest in hearing genuinely f***** up techno for probably the rest of the year! If I ever see anything else he's done I'll pick it up though.

RS £aRue (rockist_scientist), Monday, 11 April 2005 22:50 (twenty years ago)

Is Equatorial Stars like a sequel or prequel to Evening Star? Is that a new Parker?

I was really getting into your oud mix today BTW.

the fucker that will burn you (sundar), Monday, 11 April 2005 22:53 (twenty years ago)

It's a sequel to Evening Star. dleone liked it, if I recall. Maybe some other people around here. I think it must have just been released domestically in the U.S.

The Parker is new. I think it probably sounds too much like jazz for me, though the first track is hard not to love. It should expand his audience among more traditional jazz listeners. I mean, that assumes that they get to hear it, but I think many of them will.

Good to hear about the oud mix. I have been trying not to nag people about whether they like things I've sent them and what their impressions are. (Also, I don't think that everything on there is necessarily going to hit a person on one listen.)

I ordered a couple Cooper-Moore CDs from Hopscotch Records at the beginning of last month, only to find that Cooper-Moore & Assif Tsahar were on tour. I have not gotten my CDs yet. I hope they get back soon or get organized or something.

Ian Riese-Moraine. To Hell with you and your gradual evolution! (Eastern Mantra), Sunday, 17 April 2005 01:46 (twenty years ago)

the new architecture in helsinki record, didn't like the first one much but man this is a giant leap forward.
new orange peels, like a blend of his solo record and the last op record.
las escarlatinas-lovely
manual - beautiful, ulrich schnauss should learn from his work ethic.
blue ribbon - singer needs to work on his synthpop voice but still nice.

keith m (keithmcl), Sunday, 17 April 2005 05:52 (twenty years ago)

joe maneri quartet w/cecil mcbee on hat art
eugene chadbourne 'insect attracter', braxton composition 92 w/lauren newton on voice and both are on leo
webern 3 CD complete works set cond. boulez

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 17 April 2005 08:42 (twenty years ago)

you have to be careful with that boulez set, like you said on the listening thread, going through those in chronological order can be punishing, let alone listening to more than 30 consecutive minutes without taking a break

Mikel Rouse - Dennis Cleveland
Aube - Pages From The Book
Kyle Gann - Long Night
ABBA - Arrival (remastered, replacing earlier CD)
His Master's Noise - The Institute of Sonology (Bvhaast)
Iannis Xenakis - Electro-Acoustic Music (LP on Nonesuch. sounds markedly different & better than the CD)
Autechre - Untilted (promo version, actually given to me to be honest)

milton parker (Jon L), Sunday, 17 April 2005 22:51 (twenty years ago)

I haven't posted on one of these threads on ILM in a while; I usually just post on the noise board equivalent. So this is incomplete, as I am forgetful (puffpuff), but recently:

all on LP...
v/a - by the fruits you shall know the roots
pearls before swine - city of gold (white label. fancy.)
skygreen leopards - life & love in sparrow's meadow
sly & the family stone - stand!
john fahey - a new possibility
steely dan - countdown to ecstasy

on CD, a bundle of MP3s from Jack Cole and the new Josephine Foster album. i don't buy as many albums now that my ladyfriend quit work at the record store.

Ian John50n (orion), Sunday, 17 April 2005 23:19 (twenty years ago)

which Manual? I've liked pretty much everything Munk does.

the new one Azure Vista, it's more like Ascend than the collaborations he's been doing. It's fantastic.

'you have to be careful with that boulez set, like you said on the listening thread, going through those in chronological order can be punishing, let alone listening to more than 30 consecutive minutes without taking a break'

yeah totally true - bought that set a week ago and I'm working through at snail's pace...haven't even played much of the 3rd disc. I'm listening to it in 10-15 min stretches at the beginning of the day.

So far I'm really enjoying the orchestra and cantatas but not getting much out of the string quartets.

also got hold of stravinsky's 'right of spring'. reading adorno's arguments on this can be fun.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 18 April 2005 11:41 (twenty years ago)

new order - waiting for the sirens' call
john fahey - the legendary blind joe death

Zein al-Jundi: Traditional Songs from Syria

The songs themselves are great. I'm not crazy about al-Jundi's voice and singing, but it's acceptable. There are probably better performances around, but try finding them on anything other than cheap lo-fi cassettes.

it seems pleasant enough so far (compare to the last sea and cake album, which also seemed pleasant at first, if i remember correctly, but at the same time had something obviously off-putting about it to me, which the prekop does not). it'll take more time to see if it's anything more than that.

you should really get the ugk album instead.

OK, that's very weird; it came up with a question mark instead of a pound sign originally, honest.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 09:55 (twenty years ago)

Hmm...

"Sons and fascination" / "Sister feelings call" - Simple Minds, a fiver in HMV, very good, a lot better than I expected, should have bought it about 21 years ago after I fell in love with "New Gold Dream", but there you go... Am now trying to find the second "Methods of Dance" LP that Virgin issued in '82 for some reason.

"Post Punk vol 1" / "Indie Pop vol 1" - Rough Trade comps from Fopp for a fiver a piece. Very happy, very happy indeed.

Rob M (Rob M), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 10:05 (twenty years ago)

ha julio. it's a bootleg. I shouldn't have even listed it, it's on loan, not a purchase, and it's only a brief 18 minute excerpt of the full 10 hour installation followed by a 1985 interview. It's Cage reading much as he does on that live recording, but with Amacher drones based on field recordings made out on Walden Pond. I can tell it's immersively good but the low fidelity makes it difficult to enter into.

milton parker (Jon L), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)
