PERLON: s & d

ok so theres been threads about superlongevity 3 and the artwork, but i want a proper S & D. I just got into Morane's the trick 12", its awesome! i always assuemd perlon was super dry clicky stuff but im really into this sort of more brazenly housey vocal stuff. So what are the best tunes on perlon? and the albums?

ambrose (ambrose), Saturday, 26 February 2005 18:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Narcotic Syntax

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Saturday, 26 February 2005 18:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Especially "Electronic Liquid". I wouldn't call it brazen, though.

Morane - Let Me Out (amazing house meets cool jazz track)

Omar (Omar), Saturday, 26 February 2005 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Search:
Copacabannark- To Beach Or Not To Beach
Akufen- Quebec Nightclub
Pantytec- Pony Slaystation
Horror Inc.- I Plead Guilty
Markus Nikolai- Bushes
anything by Dimbiman

BUSHES

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Saturday, 26 February 2005 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

they seem to have changed sound a little recently. a lot less reduced and a little more fun perhaps (though i love it all - possibly the only label i buy everything on).

the new morane (particularly the b-side) is incredible. the new narcotic syntax is good and the fairly recent 'set me free' by kalabrese is super fun. but, i don't think there has been a bad perlon so just get the lot.

my pox would be -

dimbiman - koppchen
soulphiction - bust me
markus nicolai - manjando un carrito
akufen - quebec nightclub
copacabannark - s/t
pantytec - elastobabe
soulphiction - get it right
morane - the trick
minimal man - chicken store
kalabrese - set me free
morane - let me out (no, there's nobody in the cellar)

stirmonster, Saturday, 26 February 2005 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

have they put out any comps other than the superlongevity series?

i saw sammy dee spin last night ... he was good. i would have liked more basslines, but it was still fun.

rm265, Saturday, 26 February 2005 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

just the three superlongevitys. zip is meant to be incredible. i'd love to hear him play.

i would have liked more basslines

yup, they sure like their no bassline tracks.

stirmonster, Saturday, 26 February 2005 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Akufen - “Quebec Nightclub”
Soulphiction Presents Manmadescience - “Get it Right (Manmadescience Mix)”
Jabberjaw - “Girlfriend”
Phil Parnel - “GMT 2”
Horror Inc. - “I Plead Guilty”
Ricardo Villalobos - Thé au Harem d'Archimède album

JoB (JoB), Saturday, 26 February 2005 23:51 (twenty-one years ago)

i saw sammy dee spin last night

oh hey, i was there too. i liked plexus' set better though.

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 27 February 2005 00:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Morane is a Marcus Nikolai project (with some other dude or dudette, I don't know who). Despite co-owning the label, Nikolai has always been much more songful and tuneful than just about anyone else on the label, whether under his own name or his awesome stuff as Hombres Ojo. His album Back is wonderful and severely underrated, and i listen to it much more frequently than I do the Superlongevity comps (also great of course).

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 27 February 2005 00:35 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm probably forgetting something, but here goes:

feel sensual - thomas melchior
worldrecord holder - pile
perlipop - pile
bushes - markus nicolai
set me free - kalabrese
quebec nightclub - akufen
the unexpected guest - akufen
elastobabe - pantytec
all of the dimbiman tracks

basquiat (disco stu), Sunday, 27 February 2005 00:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I was going to post something, but it would have been the same stuff that others are saying.

But since everyone is basically repeating themselves now, allow me to say:

Pantytec's "Elastobabe" fucking OWNS

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 27 February 2005 01:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Another vote for those two amazing 12 inches by Morane. I was worried that Marcus Nikolai had disappeared.

I saw Ark in Other Music the other day, so I think it's out in the States now.

toddburns, Saturday, 14 May 2005 21:39 (twenty years ago)

i dont really like that ark album. the best trac kos sucubz, but ive already got that. im not convinced by this french glitch funk stuff, but i think theres already a thread about that.

ambrose (ambrose), Sunday, 15 May 2005 12:03 (twenty years ago)

I love this label to pieces and have yet to hear Ark, must remedy that immediately.

seriously wtf

strng hlkngtn, Tuesday, 14 June 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

it sounds pretty terrible, or at least the first minute does.

toby (tsg20), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

dont go breakin my heart now

strng hlkngtn, Tuesday, 14 June 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

seems real enough though:

http://www.boomkat.com/item.cfm?id=15094

http://www.techhouselist.org/archive/1500/1594.html

i only had it on quietly cos my girlfriend's ill, but it just seemed to have a big kick drum under the original.

i'm still excited about discovering the villalobos klf remixes yesterday, anyway, so maybe i'm not in the right mood to appreciate this...

toby (tsg20), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 19:08 (twenty years ago)

I think one of my friends actually has that 12" as a bootleg! Always gets the party going.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

I somehow cannot imagine it being good.

the D Double signal (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 21:27 (twenty years ago)

Villalobos' cheeky 12"s (like the Michael Jackson one too) are great.

the D Double signal (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 21:28 (twenty years ago)

hmmm ... well it doesn't sound like anything else on perlon! and it's sort of uninspired, seeing as it doesn't make "kiss" any better of a dance track, aside from upping the bpm.

there's a brothomstates edit of "uptown" that came out on arcola that i really liked. i can't find a listening link but it does a great job of staying true to the original. he sort of streamlines it down to a couple of key loops (the bridge, the intro riff, prince squealing "uptown!!") and puts some restrained glitch effects on it to make it sound warm and fuzzy and hazy and echoey and spectral. really, really great.

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 21:36 (twenty years ago)

:0

Uptown might be one of my favorite songs EVER!

the D Double signal (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 21:40 (twenty years ago)

i'll try to YSI when i can...

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 21:47 (twenty years ago)

the "uptown" remix is guitar-tastic.

ysi: clique

sounds great in the mix too. PRINCE.

tricky (disco stu), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 00:30 (twenty years ago)

i kiss you

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 00:40 (twenty years ago)

a prince remix and mr. matos materializes out of thin air...

tricky (disco stu), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 01:17 (twenty years ago)

that 'kiss' mix is good for getting a party jumping but i have always wondered about the perlon connection as it sounds nothing like a perlon record. supposedly though it was done by markus nikolai.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 01:27 (twenty years ago)

there's a brothomstates edit of "uptown" that came out on arcola that i really liked.

fucking fantastic remix. i own two copies!

john'n'chicago, Wednesday, 15 June 2005 01:34 (twenty years ago)

well that makes sense. i have seen nikolai live a few times and he does play stuff that is nothing like "the perlon sound" (both live and dj). example: "bushes".

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 02:18 (twenty years ago)

it is sort of sad that putting "perlon remix" on a record would sell more copies than "markus nikolai remix" or "music for freaks remix" or "classic remix" (i use those labels since he has done stuff there that uses the straight-up heavy 4/4 thump)

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 02:20 (twenty years ago)

yeah, markus nikolai /= perlon, despite his relations to the label; his stuff on headinghome, for instance, is nothing like the perlon sound.

dimbiman/zip plays london in 2 weeks

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 09:57 (twenty years ago)

btw, everyone must buy morane's new record on more down than out. summer smash. un hitazo!

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 10:26 (twenty years ago)

I thought you didn't like Morane?

Jedmond (Jedmond), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 14:06 (twenty years ago)

Not that I'm complaing about Morane boosting (just so you know).

Jedmond (Jedmond), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 14:06 (twenty years ago)

i didn't like one of the 12"s on perlon (and maybe i need to revisit it) but this one is a corker through and through.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

Which one was that?

Jedmond (Jedmond), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:17 (twenty years ago)

I need to be convinced about Morane.

Edgware General (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

The last Morane 12" is awesome - perfect summer time house stuff.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 23:28 (twenty years ago)

two months pass...
what do folks think about the matt john single? i think it's beguiling stuff. it's just as housey and smooth as parts of the ark album and has nice cut-up textures. really pushing. it has that perlon quality where you don't know if you've been listening for 10 minutes or an hour. supposedly there is an album in the works too.

i'm also curious as to what you guys think about the last villalobos single.

tricky (disco stu), Monday, 26 September 2005 21:56 (twenty years ago)

on the first listen i wasn't too sure but after a couple of plays, i really, really liked it. i really love how perlon has opened up it's sonic palette. the last villalobos was the first perlon 12" i haven't bought. am i missing out?

upcoming - dandy jack lp and a stefan goldman ep.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Monday, 26 September 2005 22:03 (twenty years ago)

I hear there's a new Pantytec early next year. can't WAIT.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Monday, 26 September 2005 22:12 (twenty years ago)

i love that they are opening up their sonic palette too. the records sound bigger without compromising what you'd typically expect perlon to deliver.

that said, the villalobos single is sort of a hybrid affair. i am being lazy and calling it a dancefloor-friendly version of his last album. lots of deep stuff and improv going on, but the groove is front and center...well at least as close to front and center as he gets!

tricky (disco stu), Monday, 26 September 2005 22:21 (twenty years ago)

it's a lot less obscure sounding than his klf remixes, but it's definitely cut from the same mold, especially the b-side. (i absolutely love the klf remixes and they were the basis for the album iirc so this all makes sense. maybe.)

i am curious if they are going to do anything special for release number 50.

tricky (disco stu), Monday, 26 September 2005 22:42 (twenty years ago)

did anybody mention this luciano/mathew jonson co-op? it's sooo awesome! ("alpine rocket"). there's also some rumour going on about this stefan goldmann ep, with ricardo and hawtin spinning it to death - and at a night the test pressing got stolen right off ricardo's deck! now that's crazy. also looking forward to the dandyjack album. hmm...

paulmall, Saturday, 1 October 2005 10:55 (twenty years ago)

i'm planning to play the B1 of the matt john tonight - seems like the most floor-friendly (sorry) track on the EP. the A side is nice, i still have no idea what's going on into it... much more k-housey than the B-side, more villalobosy with an akufen feel. i think it would clear most floors in BCN, though.

the new melchior is really nice as well.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Saturday, 1 October 2005 15:46 (twenty years ago)

predictably i like the a side (it gets floor-friendly a few minutes in iirc). i will have to check the new melchior!

tricky (disco stu), Sunday, 2 October 2005 04:01 (twenty years ago)

ah, by the way: perl 50 is the dandyjack-album ...

paulmall, Sunday, 2 October 2005 15:38 (twenty years ago)

philip, are you talking about "galeria de bahia" or something newer? i thought "galeria" was surprisingly peak hour stuff. i mean it's still subtly repetitive and all of his stuff has that tracky dj tool feel (which i love), but this one feels like an attempt at a more mainstream feel instead of the after-after-hours vibe his stuff usually projects.

i would love if perlon released new work along the lines of the collaboration behind the "windowshopping" single (baby ford, zip, and melchior).

tricky (disco stu), Sunday, 2 October 2005 17:40 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
The new Dandy Jack CD on Perlon is ace. Funky and totally immersive, with a bit of a Nature Records flavour too (ie, Raiders of the Lost Arp, Marco Passarini.) In fact, some tracks might even be a bit too self involved/complex for the dancefloor? I have somewhat determined this by noticing the record sounded twice as good listening as I went to sleep last night then when I was taking the train to work.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 20 October 2005 22:53 (twenty years ago)

I put that on and after ten minutes I thought, "ah, another Perlon record. GOOD."

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Friday, 21 October 2005 00:26 (twenty years ago)

yay! so is the similarity to nature melodic or rhythmic?

tricky (disco stu), Friday, 21 October 2005 00:48 (twenty years ago)

the new perlon - 'my auntie' by cassy is rocking my day.

i think it's a shame they didn't get kalabrese to make more records. his two non perlon releases this year have been fab.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Thursday, 15 December 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)

Perlon please please please please start selling digital downloads.

That Dandy Jack double pack is really swell.

jeffery (jeffery), Thursday, 15 December 2005 20:38 (twenty years ago)

yeah heard the new Dandy Jack is brilliant.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 15 December 2005 22:46 (twenty years ago)

i guess the dandy jack requires deep listening. i've skimmed through it a couple of times in the shops but it didn't make me want to buy it (i think it's the only perlon record i've not bought). everyone however tells me it's great. i just wish i had the time for deep listening!

stirmonster (stirmonster), Thursday, 15 December 2005 22:55 (twenty years ago)

It's true, deep listening really helped me out with the record. It's in my top ten of the year.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Friday, 16 December 2005 00:07 (twenty years ago)

cassy's "my auntie" is a great single! the tunes are hypnotic and rhythmically disorienting like the best perlon, but take the sound somewhere closer to classic jacking house. is cassy the first (solo) woman to release on perlon?

tricky (disco stu), Friday, 16 December 2005 01:42 (twenty years ago)

umming & ahhing over narcotic syntax's calculated extravagent licentiousness & reptile sweat accelerator EPs. anyone want to make a case for/against their purchase?

etc, Friday, 16 December 2005 03:55 (twenty years ago)

Mind if I a) agree with Cassy love, b) agree with Dandy Jack love, c) make a very brief case for purchasing Narcotic Syntax d) agree with Stirmonster's views regarding Kalabrese, except for the fact I only know of one recent Kalabrese release (the excellent "Huhnerfest" on Stattmusik) and would like to know more about his other release.

Jedmond (Jedmond), Friday, 16 December 2005 04:58 (twenty years ago)

"calculated extravagent licentiousness"....

Yes! do it....one of my fav perlon tracks. that swinging latin and echo'd drum sound just gets the people moving around the floor. the kinda tune that makes people put one arm up in the air and jump on one leg

matte (matte), Friday, 16 December 2005 06:51 (twenty years ago)

i work for a digital download company and we have the Perlon cataloge for sell. well, when we launch, we'll have the entire Perlon cataloge plus loads of other likeminded stuff. it's coming, be patient.

biz, Friday, 16 December 2005 17:13 (twenty years ago)

YSI?

(j/k)

Oh Oh Oh Oh Ah (fandango), Friday, 16 December 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

this is the other one jedmond. he only has one track on it but what a track! when he sings the line about 'john coltrane', people lose it.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Friday, 16 December 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

Thanks, I just heard a snippet at a store and have to track it down now.

In regards to the Dandy Jack album, if you just want to skim it, I'd say go from the end of "Arabs in the Desert" and into the beginning of "Samba Lubeck". To semi-repeat myself, in regards to the Dandy Jack album, if you want to give it a deeper listen, I'd say go from the beginning of "Arabs in the Desert" and through to the end of "Samba Lubeck".

Jedmond (Jedmond), Friday, 16 December 2005 23:45 (twenty years ago)

"Casper House" was the most immediate track on my first listen to the Dandy Jack album.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Saturday, 17 December 2005 00:31 (twenty years ago)

once again, i will stand 200% behind the dandy jack album (and at first i didn't like it AT ALL)... i really think it needs to be listened to in its entirety, over quite a bit of time... skimming just won't reveal much.

the stefann goldmann is fucking fantastic. three killer tracks.

just bought cassy yesterday but haven't listened yet.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Saturday, 17 December 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

it's prime 5am endup material. :)

tricky (disco stu), Saturday, 17 December 2005 19:10 (twenty years ago)

I am convinced the reason people don't like better music over here is that clubs must close at 3. All this stuff goes in weird post 3am directions.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 17 December 2005 20:03 (twenty years ago)

i think the cassy would work in a primetime set though, but because it's perlon it's a really flexible record too. when i say "5am endup material", i am actually referring to a san francisco club that plays dark, dubby and pumping house starting really late in the night and going past dawn where people really dance. it's very much an anything goes serious nightclubbing type of vibe.

tricky (disco stu), Saturday, 17 December 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

i intend to play it at 2am (ish) tonight.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Saturday, 17 December 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

sweet! i am probably going to go hear dan bell tonight, maybe he will play it. he was supposed to play with zip too, but no zip...

tricky (disco stu), Saturday, 17 December 2005 20:29 (twenty years ago)

that zip still eludes me. one day.....

stirmonster (stirmonster), Saturday, 17 December 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

you should have a perloptimo night!

tricky (disco stu), Saturday, 17 December 2005 20:59 (twenty years ago)

i intend to! i have around a dozen perlons in my box, all filed in order of each successive colour scheme change. nerd!

stirmonster (stirmonster), Saturday, 17 December 2005 21:10 (twenty years ago)

nerdy, yet undeniably classic!! you'll have to let us know if you do the night.

tricky (disco stu), Saturday, 17 December 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

oh, i see. a whole night of perlon? i have a feeling i'd be the only person round my way who'd enjoy it.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Saturday, 17 December 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

i was going to ask how the whorehouse has been going down.

i didn't necessarily mean a whole night, more like get zip to play with you guys.

tricky (disco stu), Saturday, 17 December 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

although i bet a perloptimo mastermix would be hot.

tricky (disco stu), Saturday, 17 December 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

we're doing a whorehouse tonight in glasgow, hence all the perlons. but yes, that is a plan for next year to do a perlon night with zip and hopefully former perloners morane live.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Saturday, 17 December 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

hi there!

please tell me, where is the club when villalobos' "True To Myself" is the climatic killer dancefloor tune. where the crowd lose their shit.

cos whereever that club is (and there must be, otherwise i lose all faith), its the cloosest, sexiest, lithest best club ever.

ambrose (ambrose), Sunday, 18 December 2005 00:21 (twenty years ago)

it's in magda's pants.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Sunday, 18 December 2005 04:55 (twenty years ago)

was listening to that new morane record on the train home; so strange

did you play that cassy in the end, stir? I remember 'the kitchen' finally making some sense; when played REALLY loud it's killer

and I wd be down fr a perloptimo (!)

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 18 December 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

i did play the cassy and a few other perlons but not as many as i'd hoped to. in fact i ended up playing a totally different bunch of records than i'd intended to for some reason. it was good to finally meet you cozen.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Sunday, 18 December 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

How was Dan Bell, tricky?

[jailhouse tattoo] (nordicskilla), Sunday, 18 December 2005 21:13 (twenty years ago)

that magda comment is priceless.

xpost, i stayed home and mixed and watched eraserhead instead. what a truly fucked up film. oddly beautiful though. the monsoon weather kind of killed any motivation i had left by the time i decided that it would be good to socialize outside of an ILM perlon thread.

tricky (disco stu), Sunday, 18 December 2005 21:23 (twenty years ago)

:)

Oh well. I was thinking about going, but ended up driving around in the rain until late. Now my street is flooded. I saw that Heartthrob is coming up at Kontrol though!

[jailhouse tattoo] (nordicskilla), Sunday, 18 December 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

Anyway, is the Morane really good? I've only heard "Living On A Traffic Island" and wasn't really into it.

[jailhouse tattoo] (nordicskilla), Sunday, 18 December 2005 21:38 (twenty years ago)

(dude i wish rx was not the default option for those into more adventurous forms of house and techno because it is not a real nightclub. i think it's cool and i go a lot, but it's a weird space. insert rant about the bizarre conservatism of sf's music scene here.)

tricky (disco stu), Sunday, 18 December 2005 22:01 (twenty years ago)

(Oh, I don't think it's a great space for minimal house nights either! It's narrow and weird and too bright. It's a gallery. end rant.)

[jailhouse tattoo] (nordicskilla), Sunday, 18 December 2005 22:14 (twenty years ago)

(exactly! it's part of the reason i didn't go last night)

back to the perlon: loving the new stefan goldmann single too. all three tracks are great as philip says above.

also, like others here i have not given the dandy jack album enough time yet...

i think i either really like or love everything perlon put out this year except for the narcotic syntax single which i don't remember even hearing.

The Morane album is basically an indie-pop record, although I still like it.

Whatever happened to the planned release of "4000 to the floor" (aka Narcotic Syntax's debut album)? - supposedly meant to be released early 2005 on Perlon.

Jedmond (Jedmond), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

the morane album is very pop but the 12" mixes are just plain warped dance music. an acquired taste perhaps but one i've acquired big time.

I just listened to the Superlongevity mix (CD2) again this morning and damn did it not sound like the best thing in the world while it was playing. Are there any similar sounding livesets going around?
Besides Taka Taka & Fabric 17, I'm drawing a blank on any commercially available minimal mixes that are so damn organic/funky/sexy.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 17:40 (twenty years ago)

xpost to Mike Gill

- have you heard Luciano's Live @ Weetamix release? It's very much along the same line and progresses in a surprising manner, especially in the first half of the mix.

the new pantytec is nuts. at first i was thinking it was a bit too dry and reduced but then the trombones came in. groovy as anything.

Tromboner!

I'm sold.

jimnaseum (jimnaseum), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 20:35 (twenty years ago)

it is, indeed, fantastic. the side with the trombones mixes great with villalobos' horn-laden burial mix remix, as well.

Hey fanatics,

this is one of the Narcoboys from Perlon posting, just stumbled on this page while googling for "Superlongevity 4". Thank you all for your praise, I enjoyed reading every bit. Jedmond inquired about "4000 to the Floor". Well, this one will be mainly retrospective, probably CD-only and it is not quite sure when it's going to be out, maybe in 2007. Narcotic Syntax have other musical priorities at the moment, but I hope you'll enjoy our forthcoming 2x12"EP "Provocative Percussion" to be released on the Cologne-based WIR label (a spin-off of the Treibstoff community) in September. Keep the vibes and always remember: The Perlonoids do it only for you.

Only a slightly delayed response: thanks for the info regarding "4000 to the Floor", much appreciated.

Jedmond (Jedmond), Friday, 2 June 2006 00:06 (nineteen years ago)

OMFG also to "Raptor's Delight." Kudos JDB, you have rocked my ass (hard core styles).

Telephonething (Telephonething), Friday, 2 June 2006 01:25 (nineteen years ago)

hee! 'raptors delight' and 'darkstar' alongside 'first laki' and 'wheelsucker' are my faves off this. the snares on 'darkstar'!!!!

stirmonster (stirmonster), Friday, 2 June 2006 01:53 (nineteen years ago)

"Raptors delight" and "Wheelsucker" are tied for my favourite tracks - mainly due to the humid/good mood I'm in (screw the Morane album, I just wanna new Markus Nikolai album).

Jedmond (Jedmond), Friday, 2 June 2006 02:28 (nineteen years ago)

Oh man, Superlongevity 4 just keeps getting better and better. Tell me, are all of Akufen's Horror Inc tracks this good? Also: if I've fallen madly in love with this comp, should I go for the 2xcd mixed Superlongevity 2, or Superlongevity 3 next? Currently skewing toward SL2 since it's cheaper despite being nearly twice as much music, but any and all recommendations are welcome.

Telephonething (Telephonething), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 01:23 (nineteen years ago)

Go for Superlongevity 2! 3 is v. good but 2 is a goldmine of brilliance.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 07:43 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, you can't go wrong with either!

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 12:21 (nineteen years ago)

2 is more of what Perlon do best. There are other good labels doing the stripped back dubby thing, but no other label is as surprising as Perlon which 2 and 4 showcase brilliantly.

Jacob (Jacob), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 17:21 (nineteen years ago)

Anyone commented on the Horror Inc. track on SLE4? Now this is brilliant!

Btw. there is a new Stefan Goldmann coming up named Sleepy Hollow. Zip was spinning it from cdr, but it doesn't seem to be coming out on Perlon. Any info on this one?

So has anyone heard the new Melchior Productions LP (No Disco Future)?

Telephone thing, Saturday, 3 November 2007 03:08 (eighteen years ago)

Man I really want to, I didn't even know it was on Perlon. Personally I'm really intrigued by this claims about getting away from his microhousey style, which is usually what I find works against him (those same skittery hat lines and vocal snippet type tracks can only go so far unfortunately) Nevertheless I'm excited, I'm in a bit of a Melchior phase right now where I'm convinced he is more or less a genius. This is the result of recently giving Different Places a solid listen for the first time since last winter, and, more drastically, discovering Law of Grace about a month ago (after having heard it live in the summer, not knowing what it was then) which has pretty much reduced me to tears several times since I first downloaded it.

In other 'Lon news I encountered someone who's selling copies of Perlon 1 through 28 on vinyl. Man, if I had enough disposable money on me. . . (I did manage to get separate copies of the first Perlon release AND Frank Mueller Melodram for $4 each off him though :D )

mehlt, Saturday, 3 November 2007 03:27 (eighteen years ago)

elan, Saturday, 3 November 2007 15:31 (eighteen years ago)

I'm yet to listen to it but it's doubtful, although if you ever happen to be in Downtown Toronto you can always get it those other records off that guy. I'm actually listening to Let's Go Deep, which I also just got off him for $4 :D Melchior I love you.

Come to think of it, you'd probably have to be crazy to not jump at this, even for someone who isn't a 'real' DJ like myself. . . I could probably grab these (take away 3 12"s and a 2X12") for 90-120 probably, jeez, let me see if I have money left over from boxing day.

mehlt, Sunday, 6 January 2008 23:56 (eighteen years ago)

This brought up because I found a bargain copy of "Quebec Nightclub" by Akufen and am now listening to it, and "New Process" was just playing, and the part where it goes like "ev-rything. . you know", which is the part that I heard a loop of years ago and which arguably was responsible for really turning me onto techno and house and bam, there it came out of nowhere. Very pleasant surprise.

mmmm, Friday, 3 December 2010 10:42 (fifteen years ago)

There's maybe a handful of tracks in this compilation that have any business on a dancefloor. The rest is just tired old shit: a couple light little drum kicks, a few weird noises, maybe a some vocal belch or squeek or what the fuck ever! People...remember Detroit? And Chicago? Where's the soul? Where's the swing? Minimal burned itself out a while ago already. The Perlon packaging looks nice but its just a shell on a mostly empty product.

eh this sounds just my kinda thing

Ectothiorhodospira shaposhnikovii (nakhchivan), Friday, 3 December 2010 10:47 (fifteen years ago)

I have vol. 4 and only like two tracks: the one that's mostly hi-hats and the one that's all freestyle.

This.

I think I'm going to wait until boxing day (aka Dec 26. aka Canadian/British Black Friday) and hope to find it in stores and get up to a third off. But this is unlikely. Otherwise I can get one place to order it for me straight, but it would be $140, which is just DO NOT WANT (well, it's actually DO WANT BUT DO NOT WANT TO PAY). Oh well.

kind of an inaccurate criticism to make of Perlon, surely

four weeks pass...

I was very, VERY happy to find Markus Nikolai's Back used on vinyl today! It still sounds absolutely fantastic. Having far more disposable income than I did when this stuff was getting released (i.e. when I was a broker-than-broke-ass college student) is a wonderful thing. Things change so quickly in the world of dance music; it feels like just the other day when I special-ordered Superlongevity on CD from my local store in Richmond, VA. (That was my one CD purchase of the, like, two or four week period, and I didn't or couldn't download back then either.) And now, pretty much exactly a decade later, I'm catching up on single-artist releases from back that have been just randomly popping up in Brooklyn record stores. Given the speed with which things come into and go out of fashion in this realm, it does make me wonder who's still listening to this early-2000s micro-/minimal stuff in 2011? Are there younger kids out there right now in listening to, I dunno, Vocalcity for the first time and having their faces blown off? Why am I more self-aware / pondering of the possibility of being horribly out of fashion when buying stuff like this than, say, early '80s metal or postpunk?

Clarke B., Tuesday, 2 August 2011 02:26 (fourteen years ago)

maybe because it seems like there's no great reason for anyone out there somewhere to be digging on 00s micro-mnml (besides, like, the music: but they have to know about it somehow)? it seems to me like it didn't pass into legend or anything, or hasn't yet. and its original audience kind of abandoned it / its producers fell off / the 'sound' lost its potency or fashionableness or relevance.

j., Tuesday, 2 August 2011 05:09 (fourteen years ago)

Sounds like a good take, j. I've been reading Reynolds's Retromania this week, and it feels like micro-mnml stuff is in that pit right now of never having been revived (and thus attracting younger, newer audiences)--maybe because not "enough" time has elapsed for a revival?--but the original releases being somewhat hard to find (aren't those old Force Inc. records long out of print for the most part?).

Clarke B., Tuesday, 2 August 2011 14:44 (fourteen years ago)

Aside from the really clinical, bass-light, clicky stuff has mnml really gone away? Zip is still regarded as one of the best DJs around, Cassy is the new resident at Circoloco, DC10 this year and of course Ricardo is still massive. All of them have widened their palette to include deep / classic / tech-house sounds but they still sound pretty minimal to me. Maybe I'm carrying the baggage of 15 years+ clubbing to define the genres properly or it's the clubs I go to?

mmmm, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 17:53 (fourteen years ago)
