That was great! Someone totally should do this.

The Lex (The Lex), Saturday, 5 March 2005 09:52 (twenty years ago)

Someone totally should do this

I'm seriously thinking about it. And doing a blog or something as well. I might draw a line at the Merzbox tho'. With that one, Daddino suffered so that others may live, I reckon.

Jeff W (zebedee), Sunday, 6 March 2005 13:35 (twenty years ago)

I would fully support that project! maybe the people who recommended the albums could sort Jeff (or whoever wants to do it) out with copies? a pity this will probably have been forgotten by 2006, but then again I don't see any reason why it couldn't be started mid-year...

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 6 March 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

I was thinking of starting April 1st.

As well as generous donors/lenders of CDs, I may also need a crash course in how blogger (or whatever) works. Are there instructions online on how to set these damn things up?

Jeff W (zebedee), Sunday, 6 March 2005 16:58 (twenty years ago)

When I first tried to set up a blog, blogger made my head hurt (which is why I had to be content with livejournal). I don't understand anything about blogger or blogspot but then I am lame when it comes to technology and everyone else in the world seems to have had no problems.

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 6 March 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

livejournal is very easy to use. Email me if you want copies of mine on MP3CD Jeff.

dog latin (dog latin), Sunday, 6 March 2005 20:30 (twenty years ago)

Okay, the journal/blog is up and running, here.

As stated above, my plan is to start on 1st April (it takes a fool...)

Would appreciate some help in starting to assemble the records. Looking ahead to just first half of April for mow (baby steps - I dunno how realistic this project will be yet, so not gonna plan too far ahead) I think I got all the nominees covered except for the following picks:

dmun: L.Einaudi, Sofa
Lee F#: Parker And Lily
j.lu: Guitarrorists
daveheaton: of montreal
jel: philistines jr.

If those who nominated are willing to lend me - or make a CD copy of - these discs, the e-mail address below is my real one. Please get in touch. Thanks.

Jeff W (zebedee), Thursday, 17 March 2005 20:23 (twenty years ago)

this is going to be awesome. SALIVATING.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 17 March 2005 23:17 (twenty years ago)

Good luck with this pal - I'll be watching the blog intently.

BARMS, Friday, 18 March 2005 11:04 (twenty years ago)

Dunno yet. But the list is closed.

Thanks to Lee for getting in touch. I've mailed you back. One thing I forgot to say before is that all contributors of a CD are of course entitled to ask me for a copy of anything else on the list in return.

Jeff W (zebedee), Friday, 18 March 2005 13:26 (twenty years ago)

this begins tomorrow! excellent.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 31 March 2005 09:14 (twenty years ago)

I still need to track down 'Guitarrorists', Of Montreal and Philistines Jr, incidentally.

Jeff W (zebedee), Thursday, 31 March 2005 09:22 (twenty years ago)

I'll big this up on LJ when I have time later today.

IT BEGINS

Jeff W (zebedee), Friday, 1 April 2005 16:26 (twenty years ago)

HOORAY!

I like the first assessment and totally agree re: 'It's All Coming Back To Me Now'. Does that album have 'Misled' and 'Falling Into You' on it? Those are the other two, er, essential C. Dion tracks.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 1 April 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

HOORAY!

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 1 April 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

er, thanks for that, submit button.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 1 April 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

Does that album have 'Misled' and 'Falling Into You' on it?
Nope.

I shall probably check out some of the French language stuff at some point (maybe in 365 days time!). I heard "Je sais pas" on a plane the other day and it was okay.

Jeff W (zebedee), Friday, 1 April 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

I'm honoured to have selected the first pick!

(sorry Jeff)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 1 April 2005 16:52 (twenty years ago)

i think it's a shame we had to move away from power balladry so quickly. i feel like you were comfortable with Dion and could have built on that through perhaps a bit of Bonnie Tyler, maybe progressing to Meatloaf later in the week, but i guess you can only work with what you've been given.

Lee F# (fsharp), Saturday, 2 April 2005 09:13 (twenty years ago)

The (mostly) wild divergences in style from one day to the next is what appealed to me most about doing this project.

Anyway, the blurb on yesterday's record is now up. And today's should follow in a bit.

Jeff W (zebedee), Sunday, 3 April 2005 12:49 (twenty years ago)

I'm really sorry I didn't participate and make you listen to some 40s Egyptian music or something.

RS £aRue (rockist_scientist), Sunday, 3 April 2005 13:16 (twenty years ago)

Hooray, Kevin Ayers - the first of my picks. A fair review - glad you enjoyed it.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 12:31 (twenty years ago)

Mike, is there an existing Feed from troubled diva to Livejournal?

Dave - thanks for the e-mail. Have mailed you back. Just need to get jel's attention now.

Blurb on yesterday's CD will be up soon.

Jeff W (zebedee), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 12:40 (twenty years ago)

Jeff: no, there isn't - I wouldn't even know how. I've just got the regular RSS feed: http://www.troubled-diva.com/rss/troubled-diva.xml

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 13:04 (twenty years ago)

Re: Le Onde

Wow. Quite the scathing review. And to think i like it just because it sounds pretty. I guess its simplicity makes it unbearable.

Quite the change in tone tomorrow. I keenly await another butchering.

dmun, Tuesday, 5 April 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

I've already listened to the Sofa CD once. Will have some positive things to say about it. But I'm gonna listen to it again first.

Jeff W (zebedee), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 16:16 (twenty years ago)

Will be unwrapping and playing the Josephine Foster tonight. Looks really intriguing!

Mike - the regular RSS feed works just fine. I can now 'see' t.d. updates from my LJ friends page. Cool.

Jeff W (zebedee), Friday, 8 April 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

Omg someone actually does this. Sorry for the hubris of me posturing as over 1.6% of ilx... If you lack any of my entries, email below is real.

OleM (OleM), Saturday, 9 April 2005 01:12 (twenty years ago)

First hiccough yesterday, as unable to get hold of Philistines Jr CD. That one will have to be postponed to later in the year. Sorry jel.

I did another one on the list instead. Write-up to follow.

Likely future problems:
April 29 - DJ dB (Matos's pick - I did try e-mailing, dunno whether you got the message)
April 30 - Scorched Earth Policy (chris andrews)
May 9 - Jake Fairley (MindInRewind)

If anyone can help hook me up with copies of these, please get in touch.

Other than that, I think I'm good through mid-May at least.

Jeff W (zebedee), Friday, 15 April 2005 12:08 (twenty years ago)

I can YSI the DJ dB, Jeff.

stephen morris (stephen morris), Friday, 15 April 2005 12:20 (twenty years ago)

Jeff W (zebedee), Friday, 15 April 2005 15:19 (twenty years ago)

Dude, he's offering to c on your t's.

Plus-Tech Whiz Kid (Disco) (Barima), Friday, 15 April 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I was wondering where you were going to find all this music! You must have a huge music collection and/or a good high-speed internet connection.

I can YSI (yousendit) the Jake Fairley (although I've had problems with YSI'ing very large files recently. I'll get it to you somehow).

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 15 April 2005 15:25 (twenty years ago)

haha, sorry. YSI is yousendit.com, a site that allows you to upload files and send them to friends. You'd have to wait until I get off of work, tho.

stephen morris (stephen morris), Friday, 15 April 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

I assume yesterday's CD was supposed to be New Forms. That's what I listened to anyway.

[I didn't really need to post that. This is really a not very cunningly disguised thread bump. Sorry to be a pain.]

Thanks, guys :)

Have now updated the journal as far as end of April. Had to skip 3 of the nominated CDs for last month in the end, but I brought forward a couple of others to make up for that. Hopefully, the 3 are merely postponed. And I should be slightly more to schedule in May.

Haikunym, I finally got hold of a copy of La Argentinidad al Palo yesterday and there's only 1 disc! Possibly what I have is a CD of selections from a double album? Anyway from what I've heard of it so far, it's a lot of fun.

there is another disc, volume 2, which I got for 10 bucks from amazon but have never seen in stores. it is also the better of the two.

I'll be burning most of the January stuff for a couple of people, so if anyone else wants a sampler, just email me. Address below is the real one.

Oh, and Matt Haikunym: I have now tracked down a CD of Vol.2 of the Bersuit (listening to it now in fact). Comments on it to follow on my LJ... tomorrow probably.

Oops - I just realised an excerpt from "Drumming" should have been on the January comp (ha, that's the second time on this thread it "got skipped").

Oh well, it wouldn't have fitted on the CD anyway. I'll stick it on the February comp when I get there.

But before we get to that, I inadvertantly omitted one track from February made me shiver...

The Beasts of Bourbon - "Love and Death" (4'03")

Final reckoning

1. As mentioned above, I didn't do the Merzbox.
2. In addition, there were three indie acts that had two different CDs nominated (Bonnie Prince Billy, The Microphones, Built To Spill) and frankly I felt I more than did my duty by listening to one of their records.
3. One album (by The Paragons) was effectively nominated twice under two different titles, so I only did that one once.
4. The audiobook nominated by Lee F# doesn't actually exist, so we agreed on a substitute ("The Maltese Falcon") by correspondence.
5. Otherwise, task completed and more or less to schedule. In addition, I threw in some extra CDs to make up for the ones I skipped, so at least 365 were listened to during the year. See playlists upthread for clues.

From the journal:

'So what have you learned?', Part 1

'So what have you learned?', Part 2

OK, that's all folks.

Someone else should do this (or similar) now.
