Am I allowed to plug the wee club thingy that I am starting up in Edinburgh this weekend?

I am slightly terrified that no-one is going to come which would be a shame as it is going to be ace.

hmmm (hmmm), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 14:01 (twenty years ago)

btw, I'm doing it for fun rather than money.

hmmm (hmmm), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 14:12 (twenty years ago)

yes, go ahead.

good luck!

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 14:13 (twenty years ago)

thanks.

Here's the flyer I can't make it any smaller as all I have on my work computer is paint and it all gets messed up.

Any & all comments appreciated. Positive ones preferred.

hmmm (hmmm), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 14:19 (twenty years ago)

Where is that? Is it far up Brougton St? (How long to walk from Princes?)

Sean M (Sean M), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

Oh yes and does it cost money?

Sean M (Sean M), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

It costs £0.

Here's a map It's about 3/4 of the way down on the left.

hmmm (hmmm), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 14:36 (twenty years ago)

sean, you live in edinburgh now?

hmmm, this looks splendid, good luck with it!

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

about 10 mins from the east end of princes st. All downhill.

xpost - thanks. I think it could be great.

hmmm (hmmm), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

looks cool. moved from edinburgh last August though. i like small rooms with people and alcohol though. good luck.

gspm (gspm), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 17:14 (twenty years ago)

I WENT TO WEE CLUB ONCE

GARU G, Thursday, 3 March 2005 01:15 (twenty years ago)

WAS IT GOOD?

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 3 March 2005 09:45 (twenty years ago)

I think he means the royal wee.

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 3 March 2005 10:12 (twenty years ago)

this club sounds alright

Sven Bastard (blueski), Thursday, 3 March 2005 10:17 (twenty years ago)

you should come.

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 3 March 2005 10:34 (twenty years ago)

Perhaps it was a royal wee club at Holyrood.

I now want to do a club in Holyrood palace.

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 3 March 2005 10:36 (twenty years ago)

I walked past a poster for this on my way to Waverley this morning. I assumed it was being run by someone who had spent too much time on ILX (it was '*Teh* GYM' that gave it away). Since I was on my way from the gym to the station at the time, I assume I would not be welcome... My experience of going to things underneath the Phoenix is that it is always rammed, since it only takes 30 (? maybe 40) people to fill it, so I wouldn't worry too much, hmmm. Hope it goes well!

alext (alext), Thursday, 3 March 2005 11:46 (twenty years ago)

The gym is just one of those things I keep hearing people talking about at work, in the pub etc all the time - a standard conversation for people who have nothing interesting going on. I prefaced it with teh as I'm not being entirely serious or dictatorial about who comes, what they say etc. I also like the fact that, to most people (who make it that far down the flyer), it looks like me making a stoopid typo while trying to be nasty. I'm not. I just put it on there as a way of tying to find people who give a fuck and who are interesting.

I'm not going to be monitoring people's conversations and kicking people out if I don't approve.

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 3 March 2005 12:17 (twenty years ago)

a club that did that would be awesome!

pete b. (pete b.), Thursday, 3 March 2005 12:22 (twenty years ago)

well, not awesome, but interesting, anyway

pete b. (pete b.), Thursday, 3 March 2005 12:23 (twenty years ago)

it would need to be a very quiet club. or one equipped with potentially law infringing surveillance equipment. or spies.

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 3 March 2005 12:26 (twenty years ago)

I think a club where the conversations were policed would be good. There could be prizes / forfeits. Kind of like a strip version of don't mention the war!

Well, I would try and come if we weren't having folk over on Saturday.

alext (alext), Thursday, 3 March 2005 12:36 (twenty years ago)

Also did you plug this on ILE?: there used to be quite a few Edinburgh people on there, so maybe you could persuade them to combine yr club with a FAP.

alext (alext), Thursday, 3 March 2005 12:37 (twenty years ago)

Well, that's a shame. There will be other opportunities in the future.

I'm trying to think of ways to make the place look a bit nice and fancy. All I have so far is tablecloths and some conveniently placed lighting (the room is a bit bright normally).

x-post : I shall do so

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 3 March 2005 12:43 (twenty years ago)

i'll be in edinburgh on saturday for a friend's birthday. i shall try to make it along, although i need to be on the last train back to glasgow ... :)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 3 March 2005 12:51 (twenty years ago)

Well, the last train is at 11:30 so you will be able to have a good 2 hours there. The buses at midnight and 1 are always better than the train at 11:30 as everyone is ending their night and just tends to doze, rather than being in the middle of their night and being all boisterous and singing and being twats.

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 3 March 2005 12:56 (twenty years ago)

good point. however: it's all gonna be dependent on mrs fiendish, who has to work on sunday :(

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 3 March 2005 13:12 (twenty years ago)

whose birthday? < /nosy>

alext (alext), Thursday, 3 March 2005 13:20 (twenty years ago)

i think i'll try to come with my roommate. bearded and slightly round, with glasses. say hello!

(ps, jed: yes!)

Sean M (Sean M), Thursday, 3 March 2005 13:47 (twenty years ago)

x-post: the boy athole. he seems to have done a piss-poor job of actually inviting anyone, though.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 3 March 2005 15:10 (twenty years ago)

Would that be Athole Mclauchlan (sp?)

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 3 March 2005 15:25 (twenty years ago)

This may be about to get very Edinburgh.

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 3 March 2005 15:27 (twenty years ago)

er, yes. it would indeed. i lived with him (in a non-biblical sense, just in case anyone's having fantasies) from 1993-1996.

coo ur.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 3 March 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

and were you also on the potterrow committee around that time?

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 3 March 2005 15:53 (twenty years ago)

hahahahahah. no. i never sunk that low. but i was there every friday night, right enough.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 3 March 2005 16:01 (twenty years ago)

Sweet. Well, hopefully, musik should be a lot better than Roadrunner. Come and say hello if you make it along.

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 3 March 2005 16:10 (twenty years ago)

I thought we must all know each other.

alext (alext), Thursday, 3 March 2005 16:12 (twenty years ago)

I actually hate you all but am willing to put that to one side so that my thing on Saturday looks busy.

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 3 March 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

roadrunner, that was it. did bubblegum come before or after? ah, the nostalgia. i'm drowning in it here.

so, umm, mr hmmm ... do we know each other, then? i used to be a short-arsed little twat with floppy hair and a beard. (these days i'm a towering man-mountain, right enough.)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 3 March 2005 16:25 (twenty years ago)

I think bubblegum was before that. I only started going to the potterrow in about 1995, was on the committee for a bit when Athole was on it. I was good friends with a guy called Peter Law who Athole went to school with in Turrif.

short-arsed little twat with floppy hair and a beard - you and every other indie kid in the mid 90s....

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 3 March 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

pete pop. yes indeed, i remember him well. he was a really nice lad, although i lost touch with him long ago. i went up to turrif one summer and hung about with him and athole ... we watched whiteout, then peter got twatted about the head by an old woman with a brolly. can't remember why.

did you live with pete in the big flat in the west end, then?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 3 March 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

o, you did. the link to your flyer's just given you away!

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 3 March 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

Yes, the big flat on west maitland st. I'm about 200 yards away from their at the moment.

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 3 March 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

I'll ask pete about the brolly incident next time I see him. V amusing....

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 3 March 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

top. i shall do my utmost to get along. keep us posted about future events, though, 'cos - like i say - i'm not sure i'm gonna convince mrs F of the merits of musik. how often are you planning on doing them?

and give pete my fondest!

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 3 March 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

1st saturday of every month.

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 3 March 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

cool.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 3 March 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

Sounds fab, think i might drop by. Is the phoenix near the bottom beside Crombies or up the top near the basement bar?

leigh (leigh), Friday, 4 March 2005 13:41 (twenty years ago)

Btw, i was a regular at Bubblegum/Roadrunner from 1991-1995, and for a short period in 1998.

leigh (leigh), Friday, 4 March 2005 13:44 (twenty years ago)

Mr.Fiendish, I'll be at Athole's do too; otherwise I would go to this as well.

Bubblegum was before Roadrunner yes. From 1991 till whenever we started Roadrunner; guess that was about 93 maybe?

Peter Law is a great lad. Haven't seen him for years though. Last I knew he was in London, building up muscles. Met him a few years ago on George street and went for a coffee. Bumped into Lo-fi, Wu-tang Neil on the street though.

KeithW (kmw), Friday, 4 March 2005 13:51 (twenty years ago)

Hang on; you lived with Pete... Hmmm.. You are Neil aren't you?

KeithW (kmw), Friday, 4 March 2005 13:55 (twenty years ago)

Dave Harford will want to go to this. I will let him know.

KeithW (kmw), Friday, 4 March 2005 14:02 (twenty years ago)

Leigh, I think the Phoenix is pretty much opposite the Barony, i.e. just below Barony street. As I remember there are two entrances, one to the upstairs pub and one to the downstairs smaller pub/club thing.

KeithW (kmw), Friday, 4 March 2005 14:09 (twenty years ago)

Righto. i used to go to the Phoenix bar (as was) on the cowgate, think it's now that nu-metal place. Its clientelle seemed to be solely made up of underagers from Boroughmuir (myself included).

leigh (leigh), Friday, 4 March 2005 14:19 (twenty years ago)

Don't know that one... Is that the one that was Legends and now, err Opium maybe?

KeithW (kmw), Friday, 4 March 2005 14:20 (twenty years ago)

Think it might have been legends. My friend does listings for the gruiniad and the indie and wonders if you want the club to be included in the club listings. If so email me via webmail (the melodynelson address doesn't work anymore) and i'll pass them on to her.

leigh (leigh), Friday, 4 March 2005 14:25 (twenty years ago)

Hmmm.. You are Neil aren't you?

he sure is! i thought he might be richard reeve for a bit, though.

actually: what happened to richard reeve?

anyway: keith, superb, really looking forward to catching up with you on saturday.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 4 March 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)

Well.. Someone did say to me that Richard works for Guns and Ammo magazine! It really sounds made up that though doesn't it.

Yes, look forward to seeing you too.

KeithW (kmw), Friday, 4 March 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

it sounds all too believable ;)

see you saturday.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 4 March 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

Lo-fi, Wu-tang Neil

I am delighted to announce that I am this very person.

The old phoenix bar was the first pub I ever bought a drink in, prior to seeing smashing pumpkins at the music box (liquid rooms) on victoria st on fireworks night 1993. It was legends (of which I have very fond memeories) and is now opium (of which I do not).

wonders if you want the club to be included in the club
listings
That would be a big pile of awesomeness. Thanks. I don't understand what you mean by email me via webmail I'm afraid.

There's a listing for it in the List this week. I am very happy about this as they were being a bit funny about including 'djs' in pubs. They addedd an extra 2 hours to it as well.

I am excited.

xpost - Richard was working for Jane's last time I spoke to him , which was a while ago. I'll get an update from pete.

[Hi Keith btw]

hmmm (hmmm), Friday, 4 March 2005 14:36 (twenty years ago)

i'll give you my pal's email addy on saturday, might be easier, i think i've got her card kicking about somewhere.

leigh (leigh), Friday, 4 March 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

awesome. thanks.

hmmm (hmmm), Friday, 4 March 2005 14:46 (twenty years ago)

Lo-fi, Wu-tang Neil

I am delighted to announce that I am this very person.

When did ILM become the support group for ex-members of Lo-Fidelity Allstars?

BARMS, Friday, 4 March 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

It's more of a support group for ex sentridoh 7" owners.

hmmm (hmmm), Friday, 4 March 2005 14:54 (twenty years ago)

hahaha ... no, stop it, i can feel my fringe growing again.

anyone know what happened to wee jamie from potterrow? there's a pint for the best answer, true or not.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 4 March 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

bloody hell. I had forgotten all about the fact that he existed.

hmmm (hmmm), Friday, 4 March 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

sorry.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 4 March 2005 15:04 (twenty years ago)

i don't have a sentridoh 7", but i do have 'gimme indie rock' on 7".

Am i likely to be the only woman at the club?

leigh (leigh), Friday, 4 March 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

If you have to ask, chere...

BARMS, Friday, 4 March 2005 15:08 (twenty years ago)

Am i likely to be the only woman at the club?

No.

hmmm (hmmm), Friday, 4 March 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)

Should I fess up to the fact that one of the people coming over to ours on Saturday also used to be a Potterow committee member and will be well-known to some of you? On the whole, perhaps not.

alext (alext), Friday, 4 March 2005 17:15 (twenty years ago)

Who's that then?

Dunno what happened to James Lusk; haven't seen him for years. He was a lovely bloke. His pal James from servitor fame got done along for being drunk in charge of an aeroplane if you remember on that Channel 4 program.

KeithW (kmw), Friday, 4 March 2005 17:20 (twenty years ago)

Neil, spoke to Dave and we're not likely to be able to make it because of Athole's do; however, we'll certainly come along next time. Be sure to email me and remind me. I'll email you my address.

KeithW (kmw), Friday, 4 March 2005 17:24 (twenty years ago)

x-post: ????!!!!!!! he did WHAT?

xx-post: say hello to tanith from us all, alex

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 4 March 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

the only servitor dude i remember is gavin. i can kinda imagine him drunk in charge of an aeroplane.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 4 March 2005 17:29 (twenty years ago)

wee plug thingy:

http://www.sfgulch.com/images/toys/ER0222BK4.jpg

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 4 March 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

Oh, it's Tanith. I see her on the street once in a while. Say hello from me too please. Nah, not Gavin. Not Adam either. I think he only did it for a while.

KeithW (kmw), Friday, 4 March 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

was he a loon with a beard? i remember a loon with a beard who was jamie's mate.

(apologies for hijacking your thread and turning it into the befuddled reminiscences of sad old men, neil.)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 4 March 2005 17:45 (twenty years ago)

just as long as you don't do it at the phoenix.

hmmm (hmmm), Friday, 4 March 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

No, kind of well built bloke, clean shaven. I think you're talking about Jim, who was on my course. He looked like the bloke from Mike Leigh's Naked?

KeithW (kmw), Friday, 4 March 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

'twas awesome.

hmmm (hmmm), Sunday, 6 March 2005 12:48 (twenty years ago)

Glad to hear it Neil. We had a great night at Athole's do too. The DJs didn't have Man 2 Man meets Man Parrish though. Hope to see you at your next club.

KeithW (kmw), Sunday, 6 March 2005 12:54 (twenty years ago)

Saturday, April 2nd. Same place, same times, only better.

hmmm (hmmm), Sunday, 6 March 2005 13:48 (twenty years ago)

I popped in for about 15mins but was suffering badly from sinusitus so didn't stay. Seemed good though, will come again next month when hopefully my head won't feel like it's going to explode.

leigh (leigh), Monday, 7 March 2005 10:30 (twenty years ago)

Awesome. That you came, not that you were ill and had to leave. Thanks for coming. You should have come to say hello.

So, the plan is to have a different person or persons djing with me every month. I'll keep you posted on who's coming up.

hmmm (hmmm), Monday, 7 March 2005 11:57 (twenty years ago)

glad it went well and will, again!

this isn't in edinburgh but it also isn't so far away:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v515/RJG/march.jpg

RJG (RJG), Monday, 7 March 2005 12:10 (twenty years ago)

That looks very good. I may go. I'm off to largs with a friend during the day to go and find the hum so we may well take a rather large detour on the way home and pop in. I went to the winchester once before I believe. It's like a hired out social club kind of affair, right?

hmmm (hmmm), Monday, 7 March 2005 12:24 (twenty years ago)

I think alba once described it as being almost like a working men's club but I always thought it was more like a golf course clubhouse. it has tables and chairs and a dancefloor and a wee stage. it is a hired out social club kind of affair, yes, but it's OK!

RJG (RJG), Monday, 7 March 2005 12:29 (twenty years ago)

That's the place. I'd quite like to find somewhere in Edinburgh to do that kind of thing but there are not too many places like that outside of Leith and I'm skeptical about how willing people will be to travel down that way at the weekend cos it's a joke trying to get home on the bus and there are no available cabs. Even if you do get one it costs about £1bn. [I had this problem on saturday after I went for a post musik dance across town]

hmmm (hmmm), Monday, 7 March 2005 12:36 (twenty years ago)

I dunno, you can get 11 pints for a tenner in Bar Sirius. There are places. The City Cafe isn't too far off it and it's easy/cheap to hire; Kev, Ben, Tom and I have done it a few times. Dave and I did the thingy that burnt down on Cowgate a few times. Pity that's not there.

We have thought about doing that place that used to be Bentleys at Tollcross, you know, the downstairs bit that used to have Karaoke.

Can I suggest you get Paul Oakenfold or Tony Blackburn to DJ with you next time? I think you should have a tribute to Tommy Vance too. 10 minutes silence.

KeithW (kmw), Monday, 7 March 2005 20:28 (twenty years ago)

how many people turned up hmmmm?

Sven Bastard (blueski), Monday, 7 March 2005 20:39 (twenty years ago)

A bunch of people turned up. Enough to merit them putting on an additional bar person downstairs. I reckon about 40-50 people would have been there over the course of the evening. It was really busy between 10 and 1130.

Thanks for the tips on other places to play keith. I'm not to keen to play the city cafe as I really don't like the downstairs. Plus, I think it's a bit too big at the moment. The bentleys place (which I think is now called Home St) sounds like a good bet. I believe the spider's web on morrison street also has a basement which I am going to explore.

hmmm (hmmm), Monday, 7 March 2005 22:13 (twenty years ago)

The Spider's Web has a function room that fits a hundred I think. Andrew Symington tells me it's the hub of Northern Soul in Scotland. I would never have known despite living next to it for a couple of years.

KeithW (kmw), Monday, 7 March 2005 22:55 (twenty years ago)

I never knew that about the Spider's Web, i can remember my mum going there for a wedding reception years ago. Nice and handy for buses and taxis too.

leigh (leigh), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 10:21 (twenty years ago)

currently agonising over whether to try and start a night in London. i wrote a good synopsis for it last night and have a title i like. the only problem is i only seem to have the passion for it 30 seconds out of every minute, and that's probably not enough for this city.

Sven Bastard (blueski), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 10:32 (twenty years ago)

playlist pretty similar to hmmmm's natch

Sven Bastard (blueski), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 10:33 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, there seems to be a few things like this cropping up here and there. Quite bloody right. I think my playlist will be changing month to month as I'm going to get a different person in to dj with me each time.

hmmm (hmmm), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 10:45 (twenty years ago)

was a good time. thanks!

Sean M (Sean M), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

Nice and handy for buses and taxis too.

It suits me; I live about two minutes away. Leigh, we were talking on Saturday night about whether or not we know you... Sounds like you went to Potterrow at all the same time I did.

Mr.Bastard, writing a title is one thing, remembering it is another. My friend and I did a few nights a few years ago called the Soft Machine. I did a load of posters and turned up, stuck them up around the venue on the night, but had called it the Soft Parade. D'oh!

KeithW (kmw), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

Leigh, we were talking on Saturday night about whether or not we know you

and if i did meet you, and offended you in any way - which is kinda likely, given that you were a girl in potterrow, and i was the king of the chumps - may i take this opportunity to apologise before you recognise me and bust my pods?

i once got punched in the face by my (female) flatmate in potterrow, at the same time as her friend was pouring a pint over my head. rock

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 20:44 (twenty years ago)

I used to go there with my friend Lauren. We'd drink snakebite and black and dance to the likes of MBV, sonic youth and the fall. I was always requesting stuff that never seemed to be played. I was tallish (still am, strangely) with dark bobbed hair and Lauren was small, blonde and buxom (can't speak for her as i haven't seen her in years).

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 10:25 (twenty years ago)

Hehe, that was the bane of the Potterrow DJ: "Have you got You made me realise?". Nowadays I think I'd love to hear that in a club again. Don't think I recognise you from the description Leigh, but I expect it's likely. Maybe we will meet you at Neil's thing next month.

Simon, who was this? Katie and Guyda? And why?

KeithW (kmw), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 18:43 (twenty years ago)

The Spider's Web is the hub of Northern Soul? I heard about a thriving Northern Soul place via some friends at Modern Lovers (Ego, first friday of the month or some such, Northern Soul and stuff of that ilk). They assured me that this other, more exclusive Northern Soul night was the shit but I never found out where it was.

It was like -friend pointing to one of the people dancing at Modern- "she's the queen of Northern Soul in these parts, she DJs at another night". prolly not that place though since there don't seem to be any female DJs on the Spider's Web soul night webpage. (though can you really believe all that you hear over the tunes in a club?)

I see £3 at the door, not bad. man, I missed the boat on that opportunity. I don't live in Edinburgh any more, nuts. recommend me a Montreal soul night!

gspm (gspm), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 22:22 (twenty years ago)

x-post: katie and ... i really can't remember the other girl's name. i think she was a friend of jess too. she might have had red hair. hmm. i'm not sure.

and a gentleman would never repeat his scurrilous allegations ;)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 10 March 2005 10:50 (twenty years ago)

I saw guyda not very long ago outside the Shellac gig at the liquid rooms. She looks exactly the same as she did years ago.

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 10 March 2005 11:06 (twenty years ago)

she's moved to wales now.

i liked guyda a lot. she kicked ass. usually jon's.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 10 March 2005 11:08 (twenty years ago)

anyway: on a more serious note. mrs fiendish's sister is coming up from london this weekend and wants us all to go out on saturday night. how do i persuade two resolutely non-woodsidey girls that we should go to the woodside, as opposed to - say - the bastarding buff club? all suggestions gratefully received.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 10 March 2005 11:15 (twenty years ago)

Mayfair fags?

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 10 March 2005 11:25 (twenty years ago)

that might work, actually.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 10 March 2005 11:43 (twenty years ago)

fukinell - i walked past this very happening on 3rd, at 12:15am, while returning a DVD...

i remember thinking 'oh that might have been interesting to go to' and lurking outside for a few seconds to hear what was playing (didn't recognise it)

if i had known it had ILx connections...

hmmm - were they alright with turning some lights off there? the first time i hired that place (2000) it was nicely lit, but every time i've been since it has always seemed alot brighter and not so pleasant

this seems to be a general thing with lots of pubs over the past few years - they seem to keep the chucking-out lights on all the time now :(

Snowy Mann (rdmanston), Thursday, 10 March 2005 18:55 (twenty years ago)

Hello.

It's Andrew Williams here. I'm living in Mexico at the moment, and reading this thread has been very enjoyable, but very strange.

I hope the club is a continuing success. Can I just say that I thought up the name "Bubblegum" at Potterrow. Not much of a claim to fame, I know.

Cheerio!

reclusive hero (reclusive hero), Thursday, 10 March 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

I heard about a thriving Northern Soul place via some friends at Modern Lovers

The guy who told me about the Spider's Web thing is one of the blokes who runs Modern Lovers, although this was years ago, when he did Uptight & Goodfoot in Glasgow. He said he went along once and it was just a bunch of sad old boys with their arms around all their 45s. Didn't sound like a great laugh. Still, that's probably what I imagine a hub of Northern Soul to look like.

This thread should probably be retitled "Try Edinburgh More..." pretty soon.

KeithW (kmw), Thursday, 10 March 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

Hello Andrew; thought you were in Brighton. What on earth are you doing in Mexico?...

Potterrow died a death (in its previous incarnation anyway) when it re-opened after the refurbishment about '98 I think.

Still, my claim to fame is that I asked for the TV walls to be installed. Podiums and cages to dance in weren't implemented sadly.

I only went to the opening night. They tried to turn it into Teviot basically. The roles have somewhat reversed as I understand it.

KeithW (kmw), Thursday, 10 March 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

I'm eating a lot of tacos Keith. And drinking too much lager. All in all it's not too shabby! Though I am going to see Ian Brown in Mexico City tomorrow night, "indie til I die" and all that. Hope you're well,

cheers,

Andrew

"Try Edinburgh More..."

I would recommend that people go to Glasgow.

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 10 March 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

I used to go to the Potterrow Friday night indie thingie too sometimes, when I was seeing a bloke from Edinburgh (1995, I think). I remember being immensely impressed when the DJ played "School Disco" by Bis. How my opinions have changed in the intervening 10 years.

What does "resolutely non-Woodsidey" mean? My mister has gone to the Winchester and he's what I would consider to be non-woodsidey. But only because I promised him Dennis Waterman and Dire Straits.

Make them go upstairs for a game of pool and you can sit downstairs yourself.

Also, free sweeties! (well, not free, as such, but still, sweeties!)

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 10 March 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

the DJ played "School Disco" by Bis

who are reforming apparently.

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 10 March 2005 20:29 (twenty years ago)

It was probably you, Mark or Pete that put that on Neil...

KeithW (kmw), Thursday, 10 March 2005 20:38 (twenty years ago)

...What I mean by that is that it certainly wasn't me!

KeithW (kmw), Thursday, 10 March 2005 20:39 (twenty years ago)

What does "resolutely non-Woodsidey" mean?

"so, saturday night. how about the woodside?"
"is that the one that's like a working man's club? no."

this really was the conversation.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 10 March 2005 21:26 (twenty years ago)

I would recommend that people go to Glasgow.

Wow, it actually took 8 days for somebody to suggest Glasgow is better than Edinburgh. And it came from the guy who started the thread and the club night. hmmmm. (and, hmmmm.)

In any case, that night at the Spider's Web, judging by their website, does look like it attracts a crowd that went to Wigan Casino way back when and isn't necessarily the place for the younger crowd that would appear at Modern.

gspm (gspm), Friday, 11 March 2005 02:23 (twenty years ago)

I bear no loyalties to Glasgow. I've been in edinburgh for most of the last 10 years and I grew up round here. It should be awesome. It is not. For the people who post on ILM, I would say glasgow is better in pretty much every respect. I hate the fact that Eis not more awesome than it is and I'm starting to try to do stuff to change that.

hmmm (hmmm), Friday, 11 March 2005 15:00 (twenty years ago)

I know exactly you how you feel hmmm: I have had the same thought (about it being up to me to get off my arse and get something to happen) every three months since... well since Bob Mills disappeared off the face of the planet I suppose. But work always seems to eat up all my spare energy (not that this is neccessarily a bad thing -- I love my job, mostly).

alext (alext), Friday, 11 March 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

See, I don't love mine so I have a bit more motivation to make other things happen.

At last, we get a bob mills mention.

hmmm (hmmm), Friday, 11 March 2005 15:21 (twenty years ago)

I dunno. Edinburgh always gets a bad rep. I lived in Glasgow when I was young and it was covered in mud. The people who live in Edinburgh don't spend their lives batting on about how amazing it is without ever having left, which is one of the reasons I was pleased to go to uni in Edinburgh; that and the lack of mud; and the fact that they had colour monitors. Please don't take what I've just said too seriously. And don't get me wrong, I love Glasgow. There's not a lot going on in Edinburgh now. I think it's misses a place like Potterrow used to be lots.

So what's the score with Bob? I haven't seen him in about five years and heard some pretty daft stories. Does anyone know what he's up to?

KeithW (kmw), Friday, 11 March 2005 18:37 (twenty years ago)

Btw, the contact details for my friend at the PA are on the listings page in the Saturday Scotsman if you want the club listed.

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 10:17 (twenty years ago)

awesome. thanks.

I am on the verge of confirming a very exciting guest person to play records for April 2nd. I will let you all know when it's all finalised.

hmmm (hmmm), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 12:54 (twenty years ago)

Are you all aware of dot dash? It's on this weekend and it's bloody good. I'm not connected to it btw.

http://www.geocities.com/simpsonneil/dotdash8.jpg

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 17 March 2005 11:11 (twenty years ago)

Who does do it? I might go to it out of interest but got a bit of a cold right now. Maybe it'll have cleared up by the weekend.

KeithW (kmw), Thursday, 17 March 2005 22:00 (twenty years ago)

Not sure.

hmmm (hmmm), Friday, 18 March 2005 09:12 (twenty years ago)

On the off chance that any of you are in Glasgow tonight, I should let you know that my ambient / dronerock band is playing at the brunswick cellars on sauchiehall street tonight. We are playing with Elements of the 70s which contains members of Eska and Stapleton, free entry, from 8:30pm.

hmmm (hmmm), Monday, 21 March 2005 11:56 (twenty years ago)

i shall try to get along. depends what time i finish work and various other arrangements.

xxpost: keith, don't be such a big wuss ;)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 21 March 2005 14:13 (twenty years ago)

Neil, bit short notice isn't it! If you're playing here any time me know and I'll come along.

Simon, we went to that thing on Saturday, which given my cold was good, since no-one else did. Pity really. The girl that was DJing first was good. Can't remember anything but "A horse with no name", but they were all good. Nothing that was on the flier either. However, this was followed by about 90 minutes of punky riot grrrly stuff that I couldn't be arsed with and failed to convince Dave & Alan that they should stay, so we left, which disappointed them since we were the only people there. That was a bit of a pity. I liked the fact that it was varied though. Several different people DJing and that's good.

Simon (and anyone else): we're thinking of coming through on Friday, maybe to go to Barfly as I've been telling a friend who DJs there for ages that I'll go. Do you fancy meeting up for a few shandies?

Soon, we also plan a night out half in Glasgow, half in Edinburgh, in celebration of Phil Collins' transatlantic trip at Live Aid. Do any of you fancy joining us?

KeithW (kmw), Monday, 21 March 2005 21:43 (twenty years ago)

doesn't sound like a classic night out, keith, i must say. but top marks for trying. i was watching sans trauma (big chris's band) at barfly and they kicked ass. then i went upstairs and watched the worst 40-year-old sadrockers ever ... phil and i stood slagging them to fuck, then realised we were right in front of their wives. who looked like they could have battered us to a pulp in one second flat.

friday sounds good, although i've got a nightmare of an early start on the saturday morning.

and your pan-scottish night out is a fantastic idea.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 21 March 2005 21:53 (twenty years ago)

actually: some of us could go to aberdeen. or perth. or dund ... no, forget that. then we could take pictures and send them to each other.

no, sorry, it's a truly shit idea.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 21 March 2005 21:58 (twenty years ago)

I intend to be a sadrocker when I am 40. Actually, I might be one now. I'm listening to Free at the moment. Does that count?

Yeah, Kev figured you guys might work weekends. Would Saturday suit better? If so we can sort it for then...

KeithW (kmw), Monday, 21 March 2005 22:26 (twenty years ago)

Athole is up for it too. I can feel the rock lever being pushed forward.

KeithW (kmw), Monday, 21 March 2005 22:43 (twenty years ago)

nah, it's not a work thing. it's a going-to-see-mrs-fiendish's-dad thing. which involves driving. and a boat. and things. but fuck it, i am ROCK and i'll be there.

even if i do wuss out a bit early.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 00:01 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, sorry about the short notice. I only had the definite arrangements confirmed yesterday so there wasn't much else I could do. Went okay though. The cellars aren't really designed for having bands play in them....

I am in the process of organising a gig + the playing of ambient type records for April 1st. Will keep you posted.

Keith - you went to dot dash on Saturday? I failed to make it as I was practicing.

hmmm (hmmm), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 11:14 (twenty years ago)

Yes, I went. I did like it and would go again if it's on, which I think might be doubtful given that no-one was there other than us. Never mind... Look forward to your club.

Glad the gig went well.

KeithW (kmw), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

Turns out the bloke who I was expecting to be there on Friday is in San Francisco, so no need to go to Barfly in particular. Drinks still on though chaps! Suggestions welcome.

Will Glasgow be joining us?

KeithW (kmw), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:58 (twenty years ago)

the brunswick cellars is just down from my flat. I think a friend of mine was playing at the elements of the '70s thing, too, in pre-.

joining you where, keith?

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 22:28 (twenty years ago)

Soon, we also plan a night out half in Glasgow, half in Edinburgh, in celebration of Phil Collins' transatlantic trip at Live Aid. Do any of you fancy joining us?

We don't have to try Edinburgh, do we? I could come out on Friday since I have recovered from death flu and it's Easter...

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 22:31 (twenty years ago)

Oh... Well, we don't know yet... I mean, we were going to go to Barfly, which is fine by me, but my friend isn't going to be there so anywhere's cool... Suggestions are cool, but it doesn't really matter. I'm just glad to be up and about again!

KeithW (kmw), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 22:32 (twenty years ago)

keith: my mates' band, hoboken, are playing at the sub club -

general plug, actually, that -

so that's an option. phil will be going, certainly.

drop us an e-mail and we'll work out where/when to meet etc.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 22:34 (twenty years ago)

I am unavailable, at the moment (emotionally and physically).

I was in edinburgh, today, though, and I quite enjoyed it.

another time, I hope (emotionally and physically).

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 22:36 (twenty years ago)

Simon, that's cool by me. If Phil's going then that's all the better. I think Simon McCrudden is in town too although not sure which day... Can you let Graeme Virtue know? This is going to turn into a logistical nightmare!

I think we should keep postings to this thread so everyone knows where and when we decide...

KeithW (kmw), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 22:37 (twenty years ago)

RJG,

Sorry to hear that... I know how you feel about the physically at least of late. Sorry to hear about the emotionally. Hope to see you soon.

KeithW (kmw), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 22:38 (twenty years ago)

ok. what time are you planning on coming through?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 22:41 (twenty years ago)

Man! Plans are for girls! See you when I see you!

Well.. OK, I might concede to letting you know closer the time. I'll try and sort out getting the train with Athole, so just after work basically. Probably about 7ish.

KeithW (kmw), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 22:43 (twenty years ago)

this seems as good a thread as any to ask -

can anyone recommend me some scottish bands that are rad and play shows in edinburgh once in a while? i've been reading Noise/List and looking at that jock website thing, but can't get a sense of what little bands are worth seeing. (ie, local indie [this is not the right term in the UK, i realize] stuff) Special bonus if you can describe the kind of music they play...

I'm trying to play catchup since moving from montreal, but it's proving surprisingly difficult to suss things out. (made more difficult by not knowing anyone indigenous.)

Sean M (Sean M), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 22:46 (twenty years ago)

Well, I'm probably not the person to ask, since I've been here 15 years and not seen a single band I liked. Well, that's not true at all, but at least local bands. Even then, there have been good bands, but I generally don't like live bands on the whole.

That doesn't help a lot does it?

Ballboy are the closest I've got in indie-land in terms of actually coming close to enjoying myself.

Are you in Edinburgh now?

KeithW (kmw), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 22:49 (twenty years ago)

keith: cool. in that case i'll take my drinking hat to work with me, rather than going home to get it later.

sean: rad bands? er, go see sans trauma. they fucking rock: big slabs of beautiful noise, and the hardest-hitting drummer EVAH. errors are great: three furious kids abusing their synths. hoboken are wonderful: the sinatra/duran duran crossover. and swimmer one are lovely fey electro-minstrels but don't play enough.

special warning: luxury car are the worst band in scotland. do not go to see them. i went back to see them again because i didn't think they could possibly have been as bad as i thought. i was wrong. then i saw them again by mistake. GOD DAMN they SUCK.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 22:50 (twenty years ago)

Is that Cymon doing the hard drumming by any chance?

KeithW (kmw), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 22:52 (twenty years ago)

Are they making you work on Good Friday, Keith? That's mean.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 22:54 (twenty years ago)

cymon? no, it's not: i've not heard what he's up to in ages, actually. it's some chap called dave. "dave drums," chris said, which is a serendipitous name for a drummer.

oh, hang on ...

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 22:54 (twenty years ago)

Yes they are, well... I can't complain. I have 42 holidays to take this year. Bank hols are just added on to normal holidays. Plus I'm kind of quite happy to go into work right now just having been away for ten weeks!

KeithW (kmw), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 22:56 (twenty years ago)

Dave Drums! Such alliteration. Chris asked me to be in his band and then didn't phone up about a practise. How odd. I didn't have the heart to ask him why not the next time I saw him, but haven't seen him for ages... If anyone has contact details, we should let him know about Friday.

KeithW (kmw), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 22:57 (twenty years ago)

Sean, I'd be happy as I'm sure others would to meet up for a drink some time if you are in Edinburgh right now... My friends are probably better at talking about live bands than I am. Beware though, they love all of them.

KeithW (kmw), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 23:00 (twenty years ago)

moved here in the beginning of february.

i love ballboy, but all i know is from getting their records sent to canada. (well, to be honest, just 'club anthems', but the rest isn't as good, is it?)

scotland's so good at music (usual suspects [b+s, beta band, arab strap, delgados, teenage fanclub, mogwai], camera obscura, appendix out, iso campbell, king creosote, ballboy, reindeer sect., sons and daughters...), but i don't have any idea of the Not Yet Famous stuff.

gf - i will note and pursue all those kids; thanks!

Sean M (Sean M), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 23:01 (twenty years ago)

keith: i've just e-mailed you chris zeeb's details. sean: let me know how you get on! and you should go out for beers with keith, he's one of the toppest men in scotland.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 23:03 (twenty years ago)

aw shucks, keith. that would be lovely.

Sean M (Sean M), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 23:05 (twenty years ago)

(got to leave the internet now: goodnight!)

Sean M (Sean M), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 23:06 (twenty years ago)

Okay... I'm a bit busy this week, but how's next week? I'll get in touch on this thread.

KeithW (kmw), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 23:07 (twenty years ago)

(Sorry, that was directed to yourself Sean)

KeithW (kmw), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 23:10 (twenty years ago)

can anyone recommend me some scottish bands ....

Moniak - rock. as. fuck.
Laeto - Video game victory rock.
Par Avion - Math rock stuff
The Magnificents - power electro
Swimmer One - an electronic version of all great scottish pop music

Shame that no-one was at dot dash. What time did you leave at? I hope they keep doing it.

I'll fill you in on the latest pre- and musik stuff tomorrow.

hmmm (hmmm), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 14:40 (twenty years ago)

you are pre-, too?

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 14:52 (twenty years ago)

maybe not.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

Sean, maybe keep an eye out for the Vectors. I caught them in an opening slot once and I was feeling kind of lousy so I was sort of chilling at the back but they did grab my attention (my recommendation based on this one exposure and knowing nothing more about them, mind). Sort of a Buzzcocks kind of thing going on. I think they are from someplace north so aren't based in Edniburgh.

hmmm (hmmm), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

Sean M (Sean M), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 16:48 (twenty years ago)

oh, you are.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)

That's what I was thinking.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 16:57 (twenty years ago)

hey, nobody's mentioned the aphrodisiacs yet. sean m: the aphrodisiacs are a very good band, but they NEED TO TURN IT UP. and i've got a soft spot for the 55s, but i know nobody else has.

are laeto still on the go? they've fallen off my radar. a shame, because i liked them a lot. i need to re-investigate.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 16:59 (twenty years ago)

Neil,

We left at maybe 11:45? So it wasn't looking too promising. Maybe they were waiting on a busload.

What is "Pre-"?

KeithW (kmw), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

Amazingly, I think untapped talent is still on the go at Potterrow. Seeing new bands there is probably a good idea Sean. I saw Idlewild and Ballboy years ago. Fingers crossed the moonflowers and the smoke machine will work.

KeithW (kmw), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

Pre- is a band that I am in.

Laeto put an album out last year. I have a sampler of it somewhere. V. Good.

hmmm (hmmm), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 20:07 (twenty years ago)

I have met you then, with DG, I think. So it goes.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 20:12 (twenty years ago)

I have had dinner with you, when we got our photo taken and you got wax on your shoe. I think. How strange. I like Pre-

I wonder if Dot to Dot will ever play, in Edinburgh. They are playing, in Glasgow, on Saturday, btw. If anyone would like to see them. It's free, but it may be at the expense of Italy vs Scotland. Bah.

Is Graeme Virtue the journalist Graeme Virtue? I always thought he looked like an OK chap.

Ally C (Ally C), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 21:08 (twenty years ago)

He knows Keith.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 21:11 (twenty years ago)

Ooh, Cook, where are you playing? I am going to a party kind of at the expense of the Scotland game, but if you are local to the West End I could maybe come and see you?

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 21:16 (twenty years ago)

I gathered that, N.

We are local to Govan. Catch a tube?

Ally C (Ally C), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 21:19 (twenty years ago)

Probably not. Time?

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

About 9pm, I expect.

Wax on my shoe AND trousers. Strange indeed. Have you seen the photos? David said he had a copy but I have yet to check them out.

I like pre too.

good use of the old-school mac font sets! and, ooh, errors get a mention.

actually, hang on. kraftwerk, black sabbath, springsteen, the stooges ... hmph, portishead can fuck off ... still, i really shall try to make it through this time. promise.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 24 March 2005 15:12 (twenty years ago)

Cool. Thanks.

You should revisit Portishead. I've been doing so this week and bits of it are really very good.

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 24 March 2005 15:25 (twenty years ago)

it's probably not portishead per se i've got the problem with. it's the wanky wanks who used to wank on about them in the mid-nineties.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 24 March 2005 16:01 (twenty years ago)

I have a no wanky wanks policy at musik.

Is Graeme Virtue the journalist Graeme Virtue? I always thought he looked like an OK chap.

Ally, yes, this is him and he is indeed a great lad. He was out last night with us; maybe you saw him. You should play in Edinburgh yes. Why not indeed?

Neil, all this looks good stuff. I will attempt to attend all.

Simon, Phil; great to see you last night. We should organize one again very soon. I know what you mean about the people who banged on about Portishead; they always seemed the weakest, but most yah-friendly trip hop band to me. Plus they had only a single Isaac Hayes sample, which is unacceptable in the field. I haven't listened to "Dummy" since the day it came out. Perhaps I will give it a shot again soon.

KeithW (kmw), Saturday, 26 March 2005 15:12 (twenty years ago)

It was nice to see you too Keith :) For an old man with a dicky hip, you were certainly doing some dancing...

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 26 March 2005 16:22 (twenty years ago)

Haha. Nice to see you too. Luckily I am OK; it seems to get better with drink. Less of the old man!

kmw, Saturday, 26 March 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

Perhaps I will give it a shot again soon.

Do this. Also check the live in NYC thing as well. The whole thing is much sharper than dummy and really benefits from being so. Mysterons is particularly good. Only downside is when the fucking audience starts CLAPPING ALONG TO THE FUCKING SONGS.

hmmm (hmmm), Sunday, 27 March 2005 09:24 (twenty years ago)

see, that's what i mean: it was their audience who let them down. wanks.

keith: was top to see you, albeit briefly. still, at least i was as fresh as a daisy for my roll and sausage on the 9.40 ferry.

what did i miss later? besides your drunken dancing, natch. and did athole get home?

it's turning into ILM's very own archers, this thread: an everyday story of c*nted folk ... no, sorry.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 27 March 2005 18:31 (twenty years ago)

Later was pretty much as you describe it... Lots of people there. Dave H, Simon & Ally, Graeme, Kev, Jess amongst others. Was a good laugh. Athole and I got the bus back at 1:30.

kmw, Sunday, 27 March 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

Neil, where on earth are the Queen Charlotte Rooms?

kmw, Sunday, 27 March 2005 19:10 (twenty years ago)

EH6 7ET + Multimap.com =

wow, that went a bit wrong.

try this

hmmm (hmmm), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

It's OK, I worked it out. On Constitution street. Good stuff. Off to Bar Sirius for 10 pints for 9 quid.

KeefW (kmw), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

jesus CHRIST, that's some deal. what are they trying to achieve: total liver poisoning?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 16:46 (twenty years ago)

Indeed... I don't think it's that any more, but when I worked down at Silverfield it was like that, 9.20 for 10 pints in happy hour. We thought it was a mistake and then someone else bought a round and it was the same!

KeefW (kmw), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 17:13 (twenty years ago)

I don't want you gents causing any kind of a ruckus...

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 31 March 2005 12:41 (twenty years ago)

Just added to the bill for friday night - Final Brass Rabbi doing some very droney & minimal sine wave affair. I heard a cd of it the other day and it's about as appropriate as you can get for off/.

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 31 March 2005 13:14 (twenty years ago)

Neil, nothing worse than usual. I'm past dancing on walls and so on, I think. One question though, can you get drinks there?

Sean, sorry haven't got in touch but either next week or if you fancy coming along to this thing Neil's doing tomorrow.

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 31 March 2005 17:04 (twenty years ago)

Yes, they have a bar.

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 31 March 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

Phew

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 31 March 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

I went into bar sirius last night to poster / flyer. 10 pints for £15 I think the guy said.

hmmm (hmmm), Friday, 1 April 2005 12:46 (twenty years ago)

hey keith et al.

i -was- planning on coming tonight, with my roommate julian, but holy crap the queen's rooms are far away.

Sean M (Sean M), Friday, 1 April 2005 14:09 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I know. Sorry. They seem to be much more accomodating than places in town and are very near to where I stay. Plus, the wee room is free to hire.

hmmm (hmmm), Friday, 1 April 2005 14:15 (twenty years ago)

10 pints for £15 I think the guy said.

Haha... Well, that's inflation for you. Actually, I was in there a few months ago for the first time in a few years and it was more of a 2 for 1 thing they had going. It was a quid fifty a pint in Bar Cougar, so not bad all round I suppose. Saw your posters all over the top of Broughton street yesterday... Good stuff. Enjoyed last night too; thanks for the effort. The concensus was that the place was great too. "A great space". That's one of my favourite phrases.

Sorry I won't be able to make it tonight; hope it goes well.

Sean, funny... Last night we were just talking about one of the great things about Edinburgh is being able to walk everywhere. Where are you staying? It was weird though going out in Leith again though; it's like going out in a different city.

KeefW (kmw), Saturday, 2 April 2005 11:32 (twenty years ago)

I'm sorry I couldn't make it to last night.

I know what you mean about Edinburgh being exceptionally walkable - it's one of the main reasons I moved here. But on the map the slog from Newington to the Queen's Chambers seemed a little too far for my wee legs; so I listened to some William Basinski at home, with my roommate and some Velvets.

Sean M (Sean M), Saturday, 2 April 2005 11:41 (twenty years ago)

Wee hint about Newington and Leith... Go through Holyrood Park to get through to London road; it can shave half an hour off the journey.

KeefW (kmw), Saturday, 2 April 2005 11:49 (twenty years ago)

hadn't though of that, but it's a good plan!

Sean M (Sean M), Saturday, 2 April 2005 12:09 (twenty years ago)

Neil,

Missed the obvious thing; liked your band. Had a bit of a SAW 2 thing going on and also a bit like the lovely quiet bits from '70s John Martyn records. Sound was terrific.

Have you "cut any disks"?

KeefW (kmw), Saturday, 2 April 2005 12:42 (twenty years ago)

Thanks for the compliments. We haven't made any records yet. That was only our third show. It is on the agenda for the fairly near future though.

I really like the room too. Not sure about whether it'll happen in there again as it was a bit of a fluke that we got it and didn't have to pay for it. I can't really justify £150 for it, at the moment....

Thanks again for coming. It was good to see you again.

hmmm (hmmm), Saturday, 2 April 2005 12:48 (twenty years ago)

Not at all; thanks for putting it on and nice to see you too. Look forward to hearing your band again.

KeefW (kmw), Saturday, 2 April 2005 12:50 (twenty years ago)

hmmm - did you get a taxi ok in the end ?

'pologies for beein sho drunked : sittin at the bar + no conversation = drinkin faster than usual => oopsh musht be shome mishtake etshetera...

the guy i was talking to as you were trying to get a taxi/leave is the manager/owner of the place, btw...

...and unfortunately, he tells me the place is having existing seating/etc ripped out to be redone/redecorated (and renamed) later this month :(

there goes another good thing.
i fear the arrival of pseudo-med beigeness and patio-friendly furniture.

Snowy Mann (rdmanston), Monday, 4 April 2005 11:59 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I heard that too. I'll keep you posted on developments. I'm not adverse to the idea of doing it in various different places around the city to be honest so it might be a good thing.

hmmm (hmmm), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 07:28 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
So, no news on upcoming events as yet due to the fact I am having to look for a new job at the moment. However, I am up to the following stuff this weekend so if you're there, keep an eye out and say hello.

friday: Michael Mayer @ Black Rabbit Whorehouse (optimo related event) at the arches
Saturday - Subcurrents @ CCA
Sunday - Chris Brokaw in Edinburgh

I will generally be looking like this

:)

hmmm (hmmm), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 11:34 (twenty years ago)

lying sideways on the floor with a dopey grin?

gspm (gspm), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 13:47 (twenty years ago)

and lacking in any body parts below my bottom lip.

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 21 April 2005 07:44 (twenty years ago)

Is anyone going to see Jamie Lidell at the honeycomb? I've emailed about tickets but they've not got back to me so far and there's nothing on ripping's or tickets scotland's websites.

leigh (leigh), Monday, 25 April 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

'Fraid not, since I know nothing about him. Is he good?

Does Edinburgh fancy a pint some time soon?

KeefW (kmw), Monday, 25 April 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

I am going to see LCD Soundsystem tonight at the venue. Are you going Keith?

Also - the next musik is confirmed for May 14th at the refurbed phoenix.

hmmm (hmmm), Friday, 29 April 2005 11:36 (twenty years ago)

anyone going to be at LCD on sunday in glasgow? 'cos i am.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 29 April 2005 11:53 (twenty years ago)

did you go see mayer, hmmm?

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 29 April 2005 11:56 (twenty years ago)

Yes and he was a bit dissapointing. Kohncke was great for about 4 songs, then he started to sound a little too much like Black Lace for my liking. Timecode also sounded like it was a 100% recorded version. It just didn't look like they were actually doing it. His moves were good and my brother tweaked his nipple after the set.

Mayer was bollocks for the first hour. I nearly left. I would have done if it wasn't him. really generic tedious dance shit. 2nd hour was better and I danced around for a bit. Won't be hurrying back to see him at any point tho.

Tony Conrad, on the other hand.....

hmmm (hmmm), Friday, 29 April 2005 12:49 (twenty years ago)

ally c saw you, in a crowd, I think, hmmm. keith was there, too, for a little while.

I really enjoyed the brw, again. surprised you thought it was bad and so bad.

saw the end of chris brokaw, at mono, on tues (I think). bit boring (I think).

RJG (RJG), Friday, 29 April 2005 12:57 (twenty years ago)

Didn't see you last week Neil, but I zoomed off for the bus reasonably early.

No I'm not going tonight. I quite like LCD soundsystem, but I don't really like live bands on the whole; give or take a few that don't play at a million decibels. I sounds like an old grandpaw here, but I thought the same when I was 16. I like the story of Ted Nugent's 1977 'If it's too loud, you're too old' tour, where all the band were wearing earplugs.

I don't know what to do tonight... Is there anything good on anywhere?

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 29 April 2005 13:06 (twenty years ago)

Miss Congeniality 2 is still showing at the UGC

Alba (Alba), Friday, 29 April 2005 13:12 (twenty years ago)

Saw it yesterday

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 29 April 2005 13:13 (twenty years ago)

I'm mainly going for brooks & Akufen. I saw LCD SS a while ago when they toured with soulwax and they were pretty neat but I was really dissapointed with the album.

Shame Brokaw was boring. I didn't make it to the edinburgh one as I had a little too much fun at subcurrents the night before.

I didn;t think it brw was so bad. I mean, I had fun. I was just expecting it to be awesome and it wasn't.

xpost

evol

hmmm (hmmm), Friday, 29 April 2005 13:15 (twenty years ago)

Great, so so far, Miss Congeniality 2 and Evol. Scotland's really getting itself keyed up for a really big night out isn't it!

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 29 April 2005 13:16 (twenty years ago)

Anyone going to NPL?

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 29 April 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)

Daft punk is playing at my house.

What's NPL?

hmmm (hmmm), Friday, 29 April 2005 14:05 (twenty years ago)

National Pop League... Guess you're not, cause you'll be here rather than Glasgow...

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 29 April 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

Is it any use? What's the deal?

hmmm (hmmm), Friday, 29 April 2005 14:15 (twenty years ago)

Well, it's at the Woodside Social monthly; it plays probably mostly indie pop sort of stuff, although what I like is that occassionally you get something pretty unexpected. Last time they played 'My Sharona' by the Knack, although somehow I don't think that's going to convince you, Neil!

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 29 April 2005 14:23 (twenty years ago)

That would be acceptable. It's the rest of it that I'm dubious about. When you say indie pop, what do you mean? I know little of such things these days....

hmmm (hmmm), Friday, 29 April 2005 14:32 (twenty years ago)

Well, I'm probably not the best to describe it as I try to blank out these parts of my memory. Let me think... Like what Colin used to play at Potterrow when he was going through an indie phase; you know, Weather Prophets, Wedding Present, this sort of thing. There are probably playlists on the internet somewhere, although a quick search reveals the 'National Lacrosse League', which although sounding interesting is not what I'm after.

Basically, it's mildly indie saddo, but not totally.

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 29 April 2005 14:40 (twenty years ago)

no wu-tang then?

hmmm (hmmm), Friday, 29 April 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

Haha :)

I doubt it...

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 29 April 2005 14:52 (twenty years ago)

Wish I'd gone to the national pop league....

hmmm (hmmm), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 10:13 (twenty years ago)

Like what Colin used to play at Potterrow when he was going through an indie phase

jesus, keith, you really know how to sell something, don't you? :)

hmmm (hmmm), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

Will come along this time Neil... See you there.

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 5 May 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

Hooray!

I'm going to be there early on as I have to be up early on sunday.

Tonight -

Myself and Dugstar (from under the radar) are playing records at an art opening at the wasps gallery, patriothall, stockbridge. 7pm onwards. Free booze (I think), boss tunes, plus the awesomest dj set-up you have ever seen. The photos are pretty amazing too.

Here is a rather unhelpful map - http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?client=public&db=pc&cidr_client=none&lang=&pc=EH35AY&advanced=&client=public&addr2=&quicksearch=eh3+5ay&addr3=&addr1=

Patriothall is on the other side of the road from the river and the library. Go thru the archway to the right of scotmid and go all the way round to the left.

hmmm (hmmm), Friday, 6 May 2005 11:45 (twenty years ago)

Did you make it to Dot Dash Keith?

I was exhausted after a very busy, but very worthwhile, few days so I failed to make it.

hmmm (hmmm), Monday, 9 May 2005 09:42 (twenty years ago)

I'm too shy too start a new thread for it but try to show up at Celebrities in Vancouver on Tuesday night really late because my mans and me are having Diplo and probably LCD Soundsystem over, ok bye! 8====D

LeCoq (LeCoq), Monday, 9 May 2005 10:26 (twenty years ago)

also,

http://www.geocities.com/simpsonneil/musikmay2005.jpg

hmmm (hmmm), Monday, 9 May 2005 11:23 (twenty years ago)

Dougie and Billy from Under the Radar will be joining me this time.

hmmm (hmmm), Monday, 9 May 2005 11:25 (twenty years ago)

Neil, I made a bit of a daft mistake... Dot Dash isn't your club is it. Oh well! Still, I met the dot dash people, since I was the only punter and they were very nice. Good night all in all.

KeefW (kmw), Monday, 9 May 2005 17:06 (twenty years ago)

I much enjoyed the underneath the radar night I was at. Very good indeed. Why did they stop doing it? Glad to hear they'll be helping you out.

KeefW (kmw), Monday, 9 May 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

The dot dash people are very nice indeed. What time were you there until? They don't seem to be doing too well with the old punters which is a shame.

Billy and dougie stopped doing under the radar because there was a bit of nasty shenanigans at the stag and turret, where they were holding it. They couldn't find anywhere else they wanted to do it. Plus, I now own billy's decks.

hmmm (hmmm), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 07:10 (twenty years ago)

I stayed until the bitter end, but didn't turn up until about 10:30, since I bumped into Paul, Rowan and Brian who are DJing at the City Cafe fortnightly nowadays. I was enjoying it there too.

KeefW (kmw), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 16:09 (twenty years ago)

Paul, Rowan and Brian - the pranksters?

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 12 May 2005 07:44 (twenty years ago)

Blimey Edinburgh lo-fi mafia in full effect.

alext (alext), Thursday, 12 May 2005 11:49 (twenty years ago)

Edinburgh lo-fi wu-tang mafia in full effect surely...

Neil, yeah the pranksters... Although in an 'honourary' sense, the pranksters includes me too. We first used the whilst spectacularly losing at the 1993 NME student pop quiz final.

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 12 May 2005 14:57 (twenty years ago)

did terry staunton host it?

oooh god, the memories of the 1995 (i think) one. i spent two hours trying to convince terry staunton that my band - which had played a grand total of one gig, three years previously, and done nothing since - was the future of music. i also remember there was tequila, and i remember waking up in my girlfriend's house with a bucket on my head. christ keith, i was a twat. why didn't you chin me or something?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 12 May 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

i have no idea with whom (grammar) i was on the team, either.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 12 May 2005 15:17 (twenty years ago)

arrghghg: exterior of refurbed phoenix = BEIGE AS PREDICTED

bollox

i will try to get to musik on sat night hmmmm - i think i found every single item you played at the april one interesting or likeable - tho i fear what it's going to look like inside now...

Snowy Mann (rdmanston), Thursday, 12 May 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

Simon,

Yeah it was Terry Staunton. We got EUSA to pay for us to go to London and stayed in the Hotel California. It was a good couple of days out. Tim Hopkins tells me he was in that final too. We beat Neil Robertson, who now manages Belle and Sebastian in the heat; Neil and his band of crusties from the QM.

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 12 May 2005 16:48 (twenty years ago)

Blimey the KeefW -- Hopkins tie-up has done my head on folk knowing folk knowing folk circle. Also tim met Matthew Funk Train via this loop and now everyone I have ever known evah seems to know each other. Except the normal people who have a sensible attitude to music i.e. whatever's on the radio's fine. And have real lives. :-) Apols to everyone who knows me.

alext (alext), Thursday, 12 May 2005 16:55 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I introduced Tim & Matthew last week (and Barry Funk Train Dancer)... Tim did tell me know know me, but I can't say I think I know you... Probably recognize you if I meet you :)

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 12 May 2005 17:00 (twenty years ago)

reading this makes me want to move to scotland...good luck hmmm, musik sounds like a hotspot

008b, Thursday, 12 May 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

By the way Neil, I will try to come your club; the club I meant to go to last Saturday... D'oh!

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 12 May 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

By the way, Alex, I'm a big fan of the 'folk knowing folk' does ones head in.

It both no longer surprises me and also gives me a big kick when it happens. It is indeed a small world.

I think I've got a good and simple explanation for it; however, it's more for the pub rather than a message board.

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 12 May 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

One of the things the guy from Dot Dash said the other night that made me laugh was in response to asking what music he liked, he said "I'm a big country fan", which obviously I understood the wrong way.

Was strangely similar to something someone else said earlier that night; "Do you know the big black guy?", meaning Henry Rollins, of course.

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 12 May 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

there's a thread in this ...

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 12 May 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

I hate threads.

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 12 May 2005 18:49 (twenty years ago)

Everyone I meet knows Keith. He's a Big Starfucker.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 12 May 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

Because everyone you know is a star? And I've shagged them all?

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 12 May 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

By the way, Nick, why don't you come through for Neil's "Musik" club on Saturday... You're welcome to crash over if you like.

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 12 May 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

I should. I haven't been to Edinburgh for ages but on the other hand I'm working on Saturday and usually after that I'm in a foul mood, knackered and only up for a night in with red wine and the telly. I'll see though. Thank you.

Sorry - I meant you were a crazy Horse fan.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 12 May 2005 19:26 (twenty years ago)

A crazy horse fan? I don't quite get that... Although I am... Obviously...

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 12 May 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

Call me if you fancy coming through on the night though...

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 12 May 2005 22:11 (twenty years ago)

Wouldn't the big black guy have been Steve Albini tho?

Koens (Koens), Thursday, 12 May 2005 22:40 (twenty years ago)

Errr.. I suppose it might have been. I didn't ask. I guess it didn't matter all that much from the point of view of a laugh.

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 12 May 2005 22:54 (twenty years ago)

i will try to get to musik on sat night hmmmm - i think i found every single item you played at the april one interesting or likeable - tho i fear what it's going to look like inside now...

sweeeeeeeeeeet. Thanks.

reading this makes me want to move to scotland...good luck hmmm, musik sounds like a hotspot

sweeeeeeeeeeet. Thanks.

y'all should come for the first hour. It's my favourite bit of the night. An amount of country and western records are played to myself and the nice bar lady (whose name I keep forgetting) at this time.

hmmm (hmmm), Friday, 13 May 2005 08:34 (twenty years ago)

Possible I might pop in for a bit; if I can persuade the other half that this compensates for my attendance at her labour party do earlier in the evening.

alext (alext), Friday, 13 May 2005 10:50 (twenty years ago)

hahahahahah you poor sod.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 13 May 2005 10:55 (twenty years ago)

At least they won. Think how awful it would be if they'd lost (seat or election). :-)

alext (alext), Friday, 13 May 2005 12:22 (twenty years ago)

Well, I had loads of fun. Best one yet.

hmmm (hmmm), Monday, 16 May 2005 11:32 (twenty years ago)

Sorry not to make it. At least I didn't have to go to the labour party do in the end.

alext (alext), Monday, 16 May 2005 12:28 (twenty years ago)

Yes, I'm sorry to not make it. I was a bit worse for wear I'm afraid. Glad to hear you had a good time. Hope to be there next time.

Did Dave turn up in the end?

KeefW (kmw), Monday, 16 May 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)

Yes. He and graeme virtue came along.

I'm planning on doing a music quiz early on (930 ish) at the next one (pencilled in for June 11th).

hmmm (hmmm), Monday, 23 May 2005 10:03 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
This, quite frankly, is going to be the best thing ever.

http://www.geocities.com/simpsonneil/musikjunesmall.jpg

In order to avoid reading out the questions and taking up valuable record playing time, the whole thing is going to be housed in an ace wee booklet. Doors are at 9.

hmmm (hmmm), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 10:27 (twenty years ago)

I'm also doing this on friday night -

the 2005 Leith Festival E m e r g e D Edinburgh present [06/05], a unique programme of three events focusing on experimental music and visual art, showcasing artists who work outside the traditional gallery setting to create innovative temporary art works for Leith’s forgotten spaces.

Including: [pollen] Friday 10 June, 8pm – 10pm
An evening of experimental art, music and performance hosted in a disused shop in the New Kirkgate Shopping Centre, Leith (upstairs). The event will bring visual artists together with eight Leith-based musicians all of whom share an affinity for experimentation and off-centre, unconventional musical forms.

ARTISTS: WOUNDED KNEE, Usurper, CK Dexter Haven, F.R.U, pre-, Shareholder, Final Brass Rabbi, catherine STREET, tim FACEY and more.

hmmm (hmmm), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 10:29 (twenty years ago)

What sort of music is going to be in the quiz? Ie, does my canadian ass stand a chance?

Sean M (Sean M), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 11:41 (twenty years ago)

The quiz is designed to be done by anyone who has an interest in music.

Your Canadian ass will totally stand a chance.

hmmm (hmmm), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 12:04 (twenty years ago)

rad

Sean M (Sean M), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 12:07 (twenty years ago)

New Kirkgate Shopping Centre

Well, you're brave!

Will try to make it along this time (on Saturday) Neil after keeping missing you. See if I can get Kev to come along too.

KeefW (kmw), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 19:30 (twenty years ago)

See if I can get Kev to come along too.

hark, what's that collective sighing noise? ah: it's the rest of edinburgh giving up any hope of winning the pop quiz. you should call 4th0l3 too, just to ensure your victory is complete and crushing.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

Not likely with Neil doing the questions. Might all be about Riot Grrrl or something :)

Yeah, I'll call Ath0le. What about you and 'pjem'? Ath0le wasn't in our winning/losing team of 1993/94... Wonder why that was looking back on it. Was he in a team with you?

KeefW (kmw), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

keith, we were mere neophytes in 93/94. i know you're the old man of potterrow and everything, but back then i was a fresher with an ill-advised goatee and a 10-quid leather trenchcoat. i wouldn't have been able to answer a pub quiz on finding my arse with both hands.

my cousin's coming up this weekend: i'll see if i can persuade him into it, but i don't think it'll happen. however: i'm gonna be through in chedinburgh in the next couple of weeks to see meet up with dave the mod (remember: he used to come and stay with us in arden street in summer; had a vespa in his bedroom) so i'll give you a shout.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 22:17 (twenty years ago)

Haha, no I don't know Dave the Mod, but he sounds cool. Certainly give me a shout if you're coming through.

Glad to see I'm an old man, thanks. I think I'm two years older than you, maybe three!

KeefW (kmw), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 22:21 (twenty years ago)

i'm still 19 at heart, though.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 22:31 (twenty years ago)

We have some stuff from Mute to give away also.

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 9 June 2005 09:28 (twenty years ago)

Okay, my pals have bailed on me - Anyone want a 22-year old Canadian on their team? I like JS Bach, Jay Z and Okkervil River...

Sean M (Sean M), Saturday, 11 June 2005 15:48 (twenty years ago)

Sean, I think I'm going to go down, and my friend Ath0le may be coming too... Happy to team up if you like.

KeefW (kmw), Saturday, 11 June 2005 16:16 (twenty years ago)

go team keith! go team keith!

i'll be with you in spirit. any questions about synthpop, text me :)

hang on, the quizmaster will be reading this. erm ... NO, DON'T TEXT ME. [winks]

actually, i was going to text you from barfly last night at 2am to tell you they were playing "my sharona" by the knack. but i thought better of it.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Saturday, 11 June 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

Haha, you should have. Was that Vic playing that? I'll have to text him my congratulations!

KeefW (kmw), Saturday, 11 June 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

it didn't appear to be vic DJing, oddly enough. unless he's seriously grown his hair. mind you: i was very drunk.

if it was him, can you apologise to him on my behalf for a) the way my cousin and i hassled him to play "mr blue sky" by ELO, and b) the way my cousin stood in front of him flicking the Vs for 20 minutes, even after the house lights went up at the end of the night? cheers :)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Saturday, 11 June 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

Haha, OK, no bother...

Kev bailed out because, get this, he's going to Sweden on Monday! He needs his sleep that lad. Slag him off if you see him please!

KeefW (kmw), Saturday, 11 June 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

You're too kind, Keef! I'll be the fellow with shortish brown beard and glasses, solo and not too sorrowful. I'll get there bout 9...

Sean M (Sean M), Saturday, 11 June 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

Cool, will catch you there. I'll try to get down for 9 too.

I look roughly like this:

KeefW (kmw), Saturday, 11 June 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

you look exactly like that, keith. you did in 1993 too, and probably will in 2043.

nb: this is a GOOD THING.

KeefW (kmw), Sunday, 12 June 2005 11:35 (twenty years ago)

grand thanks to hmmm for a good time, and grander thanks again to Keith for his top company

Sean M (Sean M), Sunday, 12 June 2005 11:36 (twenty years ago)

ho, respect! who was the team: you two and the boy 'th0le?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 12 June 2005 11:39 (twenty years ago)

Ath0le didn't make it, but Andy B, Moira, Paul G & Therese turned up out of the blue anyway. Great to meet Sean and to see Neil again. Good laugh all in all.

KeefW (kmw), Sunday, 12 June 2005 11:43 (twenty years ago)

given the nature of this thread (and indeed its title), i don't feel too bad about doing some plugging of my own. especially given that it's to do with a band we've already discussed here.

so: if you want to hear two new tracks from the mighty swimmer one - and believe me, you want to hear this associates-meets-human league-meets-kate bush-meets-the cure-meets etc etc genius, you really do - then go here.and download away.

they're there to be shared - on the band's instructions - so tell your friends :)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 13 June 2005 12:00 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
Glad you all had a good time at the quiz. I really enjoyed it. I'll let you know about the next one next week sometime.

This Saturday -

http://www.geocities.com/simpsonneil/poster.jpg

There will be Swimmer One DJs downstairs in addition to the bands as well as some awesome film/projection/"art" happenings upstairs.

There's also a projection walk starting from the bongo club at 1030 featuring the work of one of the people who is showing some stuff inside it on Saturday.

The music downstairs is at the indie/punky indie/hotly tipped end of the spectrum, thus music upstairs is at the other end, wherever that may be.

'xvectors'

hmmm (hmmm), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 17:21 (twenty years ago)

what're xvectors like? can't find anything about them on the interweb, & as I'm in NZ, my chances of hearing them are nil. annoyed/impressed that I've been beaten to covering "your love"! oh well, worst version evah of "baby wants to ride" coming up!

etc, Monday, 4 July 2005 03:17 (twenty years ago)

xvectors were pretty decent angular interpol type guitar indie stuff. I only saw a couple of songs as I was busy upstairs but they seemed ok.

The next musik is tomorrow night - Friday 15th - at the Phoenix. 9pm. 4 hours of the best music you will hear anywhere in Edinburgh.

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 14 July 2005 12:30 (twenty years ago)

and it's probably going to be the last one for a while.

hmmm (hmmm), Friday, 15 July 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

interpol! so, um, not exactly punk-funk + early chicago house, then?
(any other dancefloor-centred local bands you'd recommend, hmmm?)

etc, Saturday, 16 July 2005 03:11 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
Are you not doing any more of these then Neil?

Was trying to get people to go along at Sim0n Stu@rt's birthday do the other night, but I thought it was next Friday. Turns out I can't make next Friday anyway, but what's the score? Are you doing more of them?

KeefW (kmw), Sunday, 31 July 2005 20:05 (nineteen years ago)

Keith, were you trying to make us all turn up in Edinburgh for nothing!?

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 31 July 2005 20:47 (nineteen years ago)

three weeks pass...
the cellar bar appears to have been fixed now from its argument with a lorry - though i can't say whether the inside is any less soul-destoying than last seen just after its 'refurbishment' - are you ever going to put these on again hmmm ?

Snowy Mann (rdmanston), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 13:18 (nineteen years ago)

xvectors? Yeah, I saw them open for a gig at the Venue last year some time. They called themselves the Vectors then. pretty decent angular interpol type guitar indie stuff is the same description I would have used. back then I couldn't find anything online about them (I think they were newish and perhaps hadn't established any web presence) though there was online evidence of an unrelated band (swedish or something?) that had used the same name. So I think the name change was a good idea.

gspm (gspm), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 16:16 (nineteen years ago)

I started a job in glasgow 3 weeks ago so I am a bit short on time these days. I'm having a birthday party in a nice wee bar in leith this saturday. Email me for details if you would like to come - simpsonneil@yahoo.com.

hmmm (hmmm), Monday, 29 August 2005 13:09 (nineteen years ago)

one year passes...
Someone else should start up a wee club thingy in Edinburgh, just so we can keep this thread going!

alext (alext), Friday, 19 January 2007 17:32 (eighteen years ago)

You mean like us?

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 19 January 2007 17:44 (eighteen years ago)

:-0

alext (alext), Friday, 19 January 2007 17:57 (eighteen years ago)

Are you lying on your side?

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 19 January 2007 18:01 (eighteen years ago)

Seriously, though... Up to much tonight?

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 19 January 2007 18:01 (eighteen years ago)

I believe the term is QNI.

alext (alext), Friday, 19 January 2007 18:11 (eighteen years ago)

Don't understand, unless you mean the Queen's nursing institute, which is what Google thinks.

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 19 January 2007 18:13 (eighteen years ago)

Ah, perhaps that's from another place: QNI = Quiet Night In.

Are you stripping tonight?

alext (alext), Friday, 19 January 2007 18:15 (eighteen years ago)

Well maybe... Not in a club, though. Just some wallpaper. Was that your idea for a club?

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 19 January 2007 18:16 (eighteen years ago)

I'm glad I don't understand the meaning of quiet night in.

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 19 January 2007 18:17 (eighteen years ago)

Well you are the one with a CD of Man 2 Man ft. Man Paris remixes.

alext (alext), Friday, 19 January 2007 18:19 (eighteen years ago)

Hooray. Kev is coming out. We will be going to Black Bo's where I will pay tribute to our hero DJ.

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 19 January 2007 18:29 (eighteen years ago)

I would like to come, but since I was out last night I ought probably to stay in. Doubt I can persuade C to come out, since she's not been feeling 100% this week. Why not check out the Canon's Gait, while you're in the vicinity?
