I have been hearing this one a lot lately. I love this song. The way they produced the vocals is brilliant. The drums sound really great too. The whole song is just ALIVE!! Am I alone on this one??

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:00 (twenty years ago)

Na na na na na OH!

Probably my single of the year thus far.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:03 (twenty years ago)

BIG FUCK OFF DRUMS

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:05 (twenty years ago)

yes, wonderful song. Rich Harrison is on fire right now. (he also did "Crazy In Love" and it totally shows)

also, she is HAWT

Harrison vs. Hongro in the world series of pop

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:10 (twenty years ago)

(this is great, yup. When does it come out in the UK? Amerie's never really had a proper hit over here)

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:11 (twenty years ago)

I didn't know it was the same cat who did the Beyonce tune. Yeah thats really obvious though. I just can't say enough about all the vocals in there. I love the part where it sounds like she's saying "gobble gobble gobble" and of course that part in the middle where they layer the vocals and make some really cool chords out of all the harmonies. Gene Yuss.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:13 (twenty years ago)

oh, and he did Destiny's "Soldier" which is another of my faves lately

JaXoN Hole (JasonD), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:20 (twenty years ago)

it's all about DING DONG DING DONG DING

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:22 (twenty years ago)

I love the part where it sounds like she's saying "gobble gobble gobble"

I thought that, too!! It's great, she sounds like a turkey that swallowed a melodica!

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:23 (twenty years ago)

There's a 30 sec clip of the video here. This is going to be huge, isn't it?

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:23 (twenty years ago)

i can't give Rich too much credit, because he also did that really annoying new j.lo/usher beat with the fucking looping horn.

JaXoN Hole (JasonD), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:24 (twenty years ago)

Hmm.. "Soldier" is definitely another great vocal track. Great song actually. But the beat is DEAD. Its ironic considering how much he brought the music in "1 Thing" to life.

Its already huge! I see this video every time I turn on the TV.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:24 (twenty years ago)

I should watch TV more.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:25 (twenty years ago)

Amerie's never really had a proper hit over here

Not really here, either -- she's never cracked the top 20, at least.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:26 (twenty years ago)

("Why Don't We Fall in Love" peaked at #23.)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:26 (twenty years ago)

It also sounds EXACTLY like "Get Right" and a thousand other monotone singer BADASS KILLA DRUMLINE songs.
I love it to death and have probably listened to it forty times to day.
DINGDONGDINGDONG DING!

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:27 (twenty years ago)

I don't even watch much TV at all. Its just played every 30 minutes on BET cause its tied in with that new Will Smith movie. Thats prolly helping her out a bit.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:27 (twenty years ago)

This is some definite barnburner shit. The best part is when the strings swell towards the end.

Matt Chesnut, Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:27 (twenty years ago)

it's just about to crack the top 40 (at 45 last I checked), which makes me so happy. it was a white label at first, like 3 months ago, and the label tried to supress it because J.Lo wanted this track to be her first single (which is why she ended up with one of Usher's leftovers). I'm glad Amerie prevailed, J.Lo woulda ruined it.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:28 (twenty years ago)

also apparently the drums are sampled from "Oh, Calcutta" by the Meters, which surprised me -- RH is from DC and has played in Go-Go bands, so I almost assumed it was just a sped-up Go-Go track (which is what it sounds like, esp. w/ that woodblock).

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:31 (twenty years ago)

Why is the internet (or me) so crap when it comes to finding out when a record is going to be released (in the UK)? I know I don't really need to know, but I want to now.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:31 (twenty years ago)

Ridiculously good. Must be number one for months.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:37 (twenty years ago)

Is it possible we'll all hate it by the end of the summer?

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:39 (twenty years ago)

The bast part is that vocal loop. Oh-oH Oh-Oh OH (Oh Oh Oh)

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:39 (twenty years ago)

Al: great info there! I LOVE Get Right, but it would greatly benefit from a lack of Jello.

I also love the subtle vibes at the tracks end and the slight scratchy quality of the vocals at the start that begins to loosen as the song continues.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:42 (twenty years ago)

Yeah Brainwasher. That part you're talking about is great. I'm sitting here seriously racking my brain trying to think of ANY other song I've heard where the vocals were produced in such a kick-ass fashion. And produced is the key word there of course. I'm blown away by this song. I'm not usually BLOWN AWAY by new songs that often either.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:49 (twenty years ago)

amerie is the best thing to happen to the world. 'I just died'!!

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:50 (twenty years ago)

Accoring the this site (http://www.puregroove.co.uk/Default.asp?CategoryID=1&Quantity=0&ContextID=9467&Record=9569) the 12''Single has been out since January 5th. I wonder if it's out in the US...

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:56 (twenty years ago)

That's a white label, not a proper release.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 01:02 (twenty years ago)

(oh, and 1/3/2005 means 1st March 2005 in UK date format!)

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 01:03 (twenty years ago)

I'm such an idiot.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 01:09 (twenty years ago)

Nah.

There's a lo-fi mp3 of another new Amerie track 'Talkin' About' at http://www.ohamerie.com/

They also say they have a hi-res video of '1 Thing' at http://www.ohamerie.com/video/, but I haven't tried it yet (and the lo-res wmv one has no picture on my player).

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 01:24 (twenty years ago)

this is easily my single of the year so far, btw. it's ridiculously fantastic, it deserves to own the world. better than "crazy in love" or all of j-lo's stuff combined.

and forksclovetofu = otm about the gushy ending.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 02:05 (twenty years ago)

also, it makes me really happy to know that j-lo wanted this and didn't get it.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 02:10 (twenty years ago)

This song could not have happened with J-Lo. You couldn't do those kinds of things with her voice. Jennifer Lopez and her dumb fat ass can fuck off.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 02:13 (twenty years ago)

Even for a movie tie-in, that video is seaux haute.

Matt Chesnut, Tuesday, 8 March 2005 03:14 (twenty years ago)

"also, it makes me really happy to know that j-lo wanted this and didn't get it."

Is this true? Amerie's voice is so pretty, and J-Lo's voice is fucking nails on a chalkboard. Give her ALL of J-Lo's songs from now on.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 8 March 2005 04:05 (twenty years ago)

I'm afraid that this song will not sit well with me after overexposure. But for now, I adore "1 Thing."

billstevejim, Tuesday, 8 March 2005 04:07 (twenty years ago)

"also, it makes me really happy to know that j-lo wanted this and didn't get it."

-- billstevejim (billsteveji...), March 8th, 2005.

I heard Amerie say so in an interview, so yeah, it's true.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 04:14 (twenty years ago)

Can I just say, while I Love 1 Thing, I still think Get Right is pretty fantastic - especially for the extended breakdown.

Jedmond (Jedmond), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 04:39 (twenty years ago)

I hope all of this "1 Thing" love will spill over into people checking out Amerie's ridiculously slept on first album.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 06:04 (twenty years ago)

Tim OTM

Have y'all heard this Bobby Valentino joint yet tho? Oh man.

djdee (djdee2005), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 06:09 (twenty years ago)

ok here you go. I'm being lazy with the writing because I'm tired but check it out, its a really good song.

djdee (djdee2005), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 06:29 (twenty years ago)

(I think Tim will love this)

djdee (djdee2005), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 06:38 (twenty years ago)

Yr description makes it sound great dee but I'll have to wait until I visit my parents next to check it out...

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 06:43 (twenty years ago)

Single of the year. I love this song so much - the little guitar stabs and the "DING DONG DING DONG DING!"

I can't quite put my finger on what makes it so great - maybe how it seems like there's a Jay-Z-style guest verse right around the corner, but it never actually comes? (The Juelz Santana remix isn't bad, but I'll take the original every time.)

Amerie is so good. I have no problems with a scenario in which this song is "Crazy in Love"-level inescapable.

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 07:03 (twenty years ago)

I can't quite put my finger on what makes it so great - maybe how it seems like there's a Jay-Z-style guest verse right around the corner, but it never actually comes?

Ha ha - spot on.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 09:33 (twenty years ago)

in a shock move I adore this song! The mid point between "Get Right" and "Crazy In Love" (it's remarkable how much it sounds like "Get Right", actually, and while I love "Get Right" it also makes me realise how much better it would be if Amerie had sung it instead of J-Lo). Is there a consensus on how to pronounce Amerie yet? AAH-merie? AY-merie? A-merie?

the Bobby Valentino song is hot too, so swoonsome.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 10:12 (twenty years ago)

AM-erie (rhymes with scam), if Juelz is to be believed in the intro to the remix.

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

BTW, the song is on the Hitch sundtrack that has been out for almost a month in the US and is getting a Euro release next week.

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

yeah, "Slow Down" is great. I like how it has the same drums that were on Timbo & Magoo's "Cop That Shit" and the Britney/Ying Yang song (way better than either of those, though). I think the song was big in ATL before Luda signed him to DTP.

the official word is that Eve will be on the "1 Thing" remix.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

there's an unofficial 1 thing remix that's been floating around for months with jigga on it. it's taken from some other track -- i haven't heard it in so long i can't remember what song it was. encore, maybe?

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 18:13 (twenty years ago)

I kept reading the damn thread title as Amelie and thinking you were all a bunch of sick fucks.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

I am considering going to see Hitch just for this song.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 23:34 (twenty years ago)

One word: DON'T.
It undoubtedly plays over the credits or some such shit.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 23:47 (twenty years ago)

Ah-ha! So you haven't actually seen it?

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 23:48 (twenty years ago)

i saw hitch on the weekend and didnt notice this song, and i've been loving it for a couple weeks now.

glenny g2003 (glenny g2003), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 00:44 (twenty years ago)

> Is there a consensus on how to pronounce Amerie yet? AAH-merie? AY-merie? A-merie?

Rhymes with "mammary." Which I wholly thought Luda would've made note of by now.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 02:30 (twenty years ago)

Ah, thanks to mark p I have now heard the goodness and good it is. I definitely did NOT expect that opening drum break and that pleases me.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 02:35 (twenty years ago)

Ah-ha! So you haven't actually seen it?

-- Alba (albab...), March 8th, 2005.

No, I haven't.
I haven't tried that new C2 coke or man-on-man sex or thumbscrews either.
I just have a feeling it's not for me.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 02:38 (twenty years ago)

shit, it's been 20 minutes, i should probably listen to this.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 02:40 (twenty years ago)

Popping it in Now!

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 02:42 (twenty years ago)

as pissed as I am that my computer just crashed three times, just hearing that surface noisy start and the vicious drum breakdown and then NANANANANA OH!

This is really becoming my new happy fallback track.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 02:43 (twenty years ago)

One Thing made me go back and blast Crazy in Love. Are there any other hot Rich Harrison tracks (besides Get Right)? Is Amerie's whole album produced by him?

Wookie Rookie, Wednesday, 9 March 2005 03:45 (twenty years ago)

I haven't tried that new C2 coke or man-on-man sex or thumbscrews either.
I just have a feeling it's not for me.

dude, C2 is really terrible.

what are thumbscrews?

The JaXoN 5 (JasonD), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 03:50 (twenty years ago)

djdee (djdee2005), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 03:58 (twenty years ago)

Wookie Rookie - check out Kelly Rowland's "Can't Nobody" - how Rich Harrison got the "Crazy In Love" job.

Jedmond (Jedmond), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 04:50 (twenty years ago)

another drumtastic Rich Harrison production: "Didn't You Know" by Tha Rayne f/ Joe Budden.

I totally didn't know he did "Can't Nobody", though, I love that one too!

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 04:58 (twenty years ago)

Yeah all of Amerie's first album was done by Richcraft. Search in particular the absolutely amazing, unbeatable "Need You Tonight" and the hipster's choice, "Why Don't We Fall In Love (Richcraft Remix)".

I luv "Didn't You Know" as well.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 11:53 (twenty years ago)

I'm with Cozen on the 'I Just Died' love, but I don't have the whole album.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 12:04 (twenty years ago)

"I Just Died" is awesome too, but, like, SERIOUSLY, "Need You Tonight" for reals. It's astonishing from the very first lurch, like "One Thing" slowed to an almsot painfully sexy crawl.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 12:09 (twenty years ago)

I really need to hear this.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 12:19 (twenty years ago)

'didnt you know' = better than 'one thing', better than everything. ever. but buddenless version please

hold tight the private caller (mwah), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 12:21 (twenty years ago)

omg richcraft is 24 years old?! that's just ... not right

hold tight the private caller (mwah), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 12:31 (twenty years ago)

That would mean he was 21 when "Why Don't We Fall In Love" came out.

I'm 22 and I haven't done anything a hundredth as productive.

"but buddenless version please "

What's wrong with the Budden verse exactly prima? I prefer him muchly on "Whatever You Want" true.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 12:39 (twenty years ago)

exactly? who dares ask me what i exactly mean! ha no wait i'll have a look for it

hold tight the private caller (mwah), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 12:51 (twenty years ago)

Ha ha I have always thought of you as a bit like the Wizard of Oz but that was the first good excuse for doing so that you've given me!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 12:56 (twenty years ago)

I heard a "1 Thing" remix featuring Fabolous. Are the drums sampled from anywhere anyone knows, BTW?

JoB (JoB), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 13:07 (twenty years ago)

also apparently the drums are sampled from "Oh, Calcutta" by the Meters, which surprised me

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 13:10 (twenty years ago)

There appear to be many, many remixes of this song already. On Usenet alone I spy the following:

Juelz Santana
Royce da 5'9"
Fabolous
Peedi Crakk
Vic Damone

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 22:43 (twenty years ago)

I hope the popularity of the "1 Thing" beat w/ rappers means that RH will have Timbaland-type career arc where he starts out working with R&B singers but eventually does mostly hip hop records.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 23:57 (twenty years ago)

i would find that saddening! 1. the world needs hot rnb more 2. rich's formalism already sorta comes from a mid-90s rap era (as well as other places yes); while i don't discount the idea he could do tremendous rap tunes in the future at the moment i would worry they would all sound like amerie / nas 'man up' (another new song off the lp) but without amerie's context enlivening nas' standardness

er by which i mean nas sounds refreshingly exciting on that tune as is

hold tight the private caller (mwah), Thursday, 10 March 2005 13:28 (twenty years ago)

but that said richcraft writing with a rapper in mind would obv (hopefully) be completely diff to judging rap guest verses. which leads me to -

'didnt u know'! which i found eventually, but shd never have bothered; generally i do have a distaste for rap guest verses BUT i dont want to sound like these ninnies who automatically hate all men, (y'know like those gender-agenda divs who didnt want jay-z on 'crazy in love' or say 'gully' is better than 'singalong') so i shd qualify it's mostly because they are often stuck on as an needless afterthought vague stab at extra popularity, which is resentibly patronising, and also that often the verses are quite crassly rubbish in terms of providing any interesting dialogue with the song, which i find to be the case on 'didnt you know', besides it being a lame verse as is. 'didnt u know' is a song of one voice plainly addressing another

I told you babe so many times
I would never hurt you
So why you actin so surprised
All you got to do is…
Is show me that you feel the same way I do
Didn’t you know it’s bout me and you?

y'know? no place for joey budden

one variation i will accept tho is that joe buds does sound quite good and live on this beat! so for instance altho jadakiss is a total dumbass on teedra moses' 'you'll never find' i dont mind so much cos jada's throaty burnished bronze is texturally v nice on that golden beat

hold tight the private caller (mwah), Thursday, 10 March 2005 13:54 (twenty years ago)

Jadakiss's dialogue with Teedra is really great on that song! He totally undercuts her (yeah I will find a better woman) and confirms what she's been calling him out on at the same time. And Jay-Z was obv classic on "Crazy In Love" because it's a love song innit.

I broadly agree re: rap guest verses but the only real dud which springs to mind is the Lumidee remix - it's such an intimate song, it sounded like she was singing it half to herself in her bedroom, no need for anyone to invade it.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 10 March 2005 14:00 (twenty years ago)

mm yeah that's true. maybe its just that having jada stuck on the end rather than the middle in a to-and-fro is quite a unsatisfyingly sobering downer, and a long way back for you to remember how it might reflect of teedra's; in the end the result isnt so much one of listeners engaging and taking sides but of a presenting a general a generally unhappy bickering relationship malaise

(also i swore i would never be a djdee but gah fucking recognise you dildos)

hold tight the private caller (mwah), Thursday, 10 March 2005 14:10 (twenty years ago)

(tht james van der beek graphic is th single funniest thing I have ever seen)

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 10 March 2005 14:18 (twenty years ago)

ha then again whisper it darkly but i might live with ruining '1 thing' just to see peedi crakk jabbering away on totp

hold tight the private caller (mwah), Thursday, 10 March 2005 14:26 (twenty years ago)

he says AY-merie! aargh, the pronunciation confusion is back. the rapping sounds hot over the beat especially in that section with Amerie's hollering looped in the background.

in the end the result isnt so much one of listeners engaging and taking sides but of a presenting a general a generally unhappy bickering relationship malaise

I think this was intentional, and pretty much a good way to summarise the relationship in that song. I always picture Jadakiss walking out of the door after he finishes his verse, and Teedra's got no one to sing to any more :( actually, what it suddenly reminds me of right now is Bree van de Kamp's marriage in Desperate Housewives :(

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 10 March 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

jeez sorry I brought it up

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 10 March 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

in other news dammit this week "1 Thing" drops down a spot on the Hot 100 from 45 to 46.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 10 March 2005 14:47 (twenty years ago)

Is the Hot 100 radio play?

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 10 March 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

Is it anything else?

JoB (JoB), Thursday, 10 March 2005 15:08 (twenty years ago)

"Not coincidentally, Mr. Harrison's schedule is filling up."

JoB (JoB), Thursday, 10 March 2005 19:18 (twenty years ago)

They changed how the Hot 100 is run a few weeks ago... Digital Downloads are now counted, so it's Airplay + Audience + Digital Downloads.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Thursday, 10 March 2005 19:31 (twenty years ago)

that was a great article.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 10 March 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

"digital downloads"

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 10 March 2005 19:46 (twenty years ago)

that is a good article, but "bares a resemblance"?? c'mon Times!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 10 March 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

yeah, good article. but I don't know what he's talking about, "Get Right" totally has a proper bridge.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 10 March 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

(also i swore i would never be a djdee but gah fucking recognise you dildos)

You made a pledge bcuz of me? How sweet. (what is this referring to btw?)

djdee (djdee2005), Thursday, 10 March 2005 20:30 (twenty years ago)

Get Right's bridge makes the song for me!

djdee (djdee2005), Thursday, 10 March 2005 20:30 (twenty years ago)

Oh i see the links to my blog. Eh. Its not like i'm making money off it, whatever.

djdee (djdee2005), Thursday, 10 March 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

This song is fantastic and all but I don't get why everyone's jizzing all over the production - what makes this special is HER. Take Amerie off the track and what you have is so DJ Shadow-by-numbers that you could put it on that Quannum album and no one would notice.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 13 March 2005 22:46 (twenty years ago)

That is part of why Rich Harrison should stay with R&B - his hard funk tracks are great to the extent that they're novel within an R&B track. Mind you this is a bit of a truism innit: Just Blaze sounded boring remixing Beastie Boys too.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 13 March 2005 22:59 (twenty years ago)

If you like DJ Shadow drums in R&B (and I do) you should check out "Bug a Boo (Refugee Camp Remix)" by Destiny's Child featuring Wyclef Jean.

JoB (JoB), Sunday, 13 March 2005 23:25 (twenty years ago)

Also Nicole Wray's "If I Was Your Girlfriend" from last year more or less fits in this commendable trend. I like that one even better than "1 Thing", I think.

JoB (JoB), Sunday, 13 March 2005 23:27 (twenty years ago)

yeah that song was great, didn't get nearly big enough. esp. the Peedi Crakk remix!

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 13 March 2005 23:36 (twenty years ago)

weird, before i knew who this was, i would hear this song on wpgc late at night and assume it was just a local DC hit because of the go-go vibe the drums have going.

mat, Monday, 14 March 2005 00:06 (twenty years ago)

yeah, If I Was Yr Girlfriend was the first thing this made me think of. god i luvved that. who produced it btw?

Cabaret Voltron (PUNXSUTAWNEY PENIS), Monday, 14 March 2005 03:48 (twenty years ago)

I heard this track about 12 times over two days in a recent trip to SF on the rental's radio. Need more like this, plz! Is there any live acts with this sound (diva- ladyvox over breaks)? And are my ears/ipod headphones deceiving me or do the gypsies have no homes here, no bass? I guessed the Beyonce connection pretty early on, it's the same structure just the samples have been switched. The ping/pong bits are ace.

caspar (caspar), Saturday, 19 March 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

Love the song more with every listen. And I just realized what the drums remind me of: Jade's "Don't Walk Away."

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Saturday, 19 March 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

And are my ears/ipod headphones deceiving me or do the gypsies have no homes here, no bass?

Nope, no bass. It's a perfect mp3.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:13 (twenty years ago)

Yes, this song is gorgeous and wonderful.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 04:12 (twenty years ago)

I said this song was gonna be hot like 2 months ago.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 04:13 (twenty years ago)

Actually that was Al. There's always someone more on the ball on ILM.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 04:22 (twenty years ago)

True. In fact I didn't say it til a little over a month ago, it looks like. But I was *thinking it* two months ago ...

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 04:28 (twenty years ago)

S'alright, didn't mean to be policing yr claims! I kinda enjoy discovering stuff and then finding out how long it's been since someone initially mentioned it on ILM (usually about six months).

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 04:33 (twenty years ago)

I knew we would all be talking about music here on ILM when I was 5. I was THAT GOOD.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 04:35 (twenty years ago)

I just thought I had an edge thanks to a supposed "Hot 97 Exclusive"

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 04:37 (twenty years ago)

yeah I kinda wish I'd been so bold as to put money on the fact that everyone would be talking about the new Amerie (and the new Ying Yang Twins) when I first heard them both 3 months ago, because I'd be collecting big right now.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 04:38 (twenty years ago)

I also predicted that "Candy Shop" would be a big flop. So I owe someone a lot of money.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 04:42 (twenty years ago)

I should have assumed that a song that allows people to mouth nasty innuendoes to each other while they're dancing would be a hit.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 04:43 (twenty years ago)

I heard the remix with Eve last night. It's OK.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 08:20 (twenty years ago)

I like the song, but I think her vocals suck. She sounds like she's straining just a little too hard.

Jeff Sumner (Jeff Sumner), Saturday, 26 March 2005 23:05 (twenty years ago)

maybe how it seems like there's a Jay-Z-style guest verse right around the corner, but it never actually comes?

over at turntablelab.com, they're listing a remix with jay-z on it. want it.

jermaine (jnoble), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 16:55 (twenty years ago)

I've heard that on the radio--Jay doesn't add too much, but he still fits very snugly within the time he's given. Good choice.(50's verses on the "Turn Off Da Lights" remix are still better)

Side note that I don't think has been hit on too much in this thread: the vid for "One Thing" is great. Not too flashy, but good integration of the Hitch clips, great set design and Amerie looks fucking PHENOMENAL in her various outfits. Not quite this year's "Dip it Low" but close.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 20:43 (twenty years ago)

it might've been mentioned upthread already but the Jay-Z remix is not official and also kind of fake, just an old verse put on the beat (although it fits it like a glove so who cares)

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 20:55 (twenty years ago)

does this song sound like "Poison" to anyone else?

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Thursday, 7 April 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

BBD?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 7 April 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

yeah.

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Thursday, 7 April 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

I can see why you'd say that. But the "Poison" drum pattern -- the most unmistakeable part of the song -- isn't as loose and careening as the "1 Thing" drum pattern.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 7 April 2005 20:35 (twenty years ago)

This song is great. I love what he did with the Meters sample here, it's unique and spot-on.

Keith C (kcraw916), Thursday, 7 April 2005 20:45 (twenty years ago)

Take Amerie off the track and what you have is so DJ Shadow-by-numbers

Ha, for all intents and purposes, '1 Thing' is in fact a slowed 'Let The Good Times Roll' by RJD2 without the 80s breakdown.

This was the tune that made Marianna, Alex and I dance alone in a roomful of people on Saturday. The chorus vocals hurt, but the rest is badass and I get to do my JB thing.

Deerninja B4rim4, Plus-Tech Whizz Kid (Barima), Thursday, 7 April 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

Who wasn't dancing?

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 7 April 2005 20:58 (twenty years ago)

dear lord this song is good. I could listen to the drum loop forever.

tylero (tylero), Friday, 15 April 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

here is the original meters' break. you can loop it and listen to it forever if you so desire.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Friday, 15 April 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 21 April 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

i hope not. cuz it's got summer jam written all over it. has it already peaked? see I'm so out of it I JUST heard it a few days ago. I never watch MTV or listen to the radio, ...I heard it at a party and was instantly hooked

the album is seriously great.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 21 April 2005 15:46 (twenty years ago)

hehe I'm so glad I beat everyone else to the punch in reserving rights to review the album for Stylus.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 21 April 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

it's all about the lady's legs! and that wicked drumloop...i love the video, and how at the end she gets down with the drummers on stage, sorta headbanging like she's really into the music. unlike the video for get right, where j.lo can't give up one second of camera time to anyone but her thousand incarnations...

Rachel S (rachels), Thursday, 21 April 2005 16:07 (twenty years ago)

yeah. Vid is seriously hot.

the todster (the todster), Thursday, 21 April 2005 16:17 (twenty years ago)

The vid for the single to her last album was hot (and there were a lot more shots of her legs). This vid is ok. Why do we need clips from hitch?

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Thursday, 21 April 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

Because Kevin James is hot.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 21 April 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

I'm really starting to worry about you, Daver.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 21 April 2005 19:55 (twenty years ago)

Al, I'm looking forward to your review! I love this album so far, I'd be daunted to write about it.

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Thursday, 21 April 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

I still haven't heard the whole thing (and probably won't til the release date next week), I just figured it was worth calling dibs on.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 21 April 2005 21:19 (twenty years ago)

i am so so so so so so so glad this doesn't suck. it is the opposite of suck. it is awesome. rich harrison is a fucking genius. and wtf omg she is so hot in some of those interior booklet photos.

strng hlkngtn, Monday, 25 April 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

even the lil jon beat is good! (it sounds like dancehall and he only throws the eurorave stabs in at the very very end.) the red spyda beat kinda does suck though.

strng hlkngtn, Monday, 25 April 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

i just got this late last night and i've only briefly scanned it, but is there a track near the middle that samples "1 thing"?

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 25 April 2005 15:53 (twenty years ago)

If anyone is interested, I wrote about "1 Thing" and embedded a link to the Meters song that's sampled. I'm only going to have it up for another couple hours, though.

I mean, I remember the remix w/ Luda from back in '02 but I think that was a different beat, so I'm wondering if this remix was actually made recently or is 3 years old too and just tacked onto the album.

David Day turned me onto the amazing chill-out remix of "One Thing," which I have no information on at all, but I do have it on my podcast this week.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 21:36 (twenty years ago)

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 2 June 2005 11:28 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
It doesn't suprise me at all that drum part is from The Meters; those are the best sampled drums I've heard on a rap/r'n'b track for ages. Do you know if anyone sampled "Hey Pocky-Way" by the same band? The drum break on that song is to die for!

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 10 July 2005 18:07 (twenty years ago)

"Hey Pocky Way"
Beastie Boys - "Dropping Names"
Boogie Down Productions - "The Homeless"
Slum Village - "2 U 4 U" (Drums at end)

The Amazing Jaxon! (jaxon), Sunday, 10 July 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

How many people want to still hold this up as single of the year? Cuz I'm switchin' votes to Missy, with this as a frontrunner.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 10 July 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

Ah, I knew that break was too hot not to have been sampled.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 10 July 2005 19:19 (twenty years ago)

"Still Tippin'" is single of the year.

random thoughts on '1 thing':

I generally don't like this style of stuff at all, but I dig this.

However, I hate when they pitch samples up and down like on this song; that's a pet peeve of mine. The strings are so out of tune with the guitar hits (when the strings come in at 1:57 they clash with the guitar chord sample; lasts for like 10 seconds---annoys the fuck out of me). Perhaps it was intentional, but it all goes back to my pet peeve of just shifting sampled guitar chords up and down.

The drums are really cool though, but it's a really commonly sampled Meters break. Everyone uses this one.

My favorite moment: that one time in the song when Amerie's vocal is double the octave below with some sort of pitch shifter effect (the line at 1:49, that cool pitch shifting double---and it only happens once in the song; that's really cool).

The production on her voice is great; there are some nice doublings and stereo layouts.

There's so much dynamism in it. It keeps picking things up from different angles, and the lyrics are really great. It's as if it wraps up the things I like about dozens of other songs into one song.

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Thursday, 19 January 2006 04:02 (nineteen years ago)

Okay, I freely admit I didn't expect Rockist to be posting that. (I admit I'm less surprised than I would have been if it was Geir.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 19 January 2006 04:06 (nineteen years ago)

aside from the lil jon title track (which is only bad cuz it breaks the mood) this album has held up remarkably well for me.

It's weird, it's like it's single-handedly reminded me how to feel certain rhythms I have been feeling much for a while, or feeling like feeling.

It is a little retro though in a way, no?

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Thursday, 19 January 2006 04:14 (nineteen years ago)

I really like the way her voice and the percussion blur together at certain points.

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Thursday, 19 January 2006 04:17 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah this album is really good although the title track (I assume thats LJ's?) is totally skippable. Rich H. makes very good album tracks.

adamrl (nordicskilla), Thursday, 19 January 2006 04:47 (nineteen years ago)

yeah "Touch" is the Lil Jon. lousy single choice, too, totally killed the album's momentum.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Thursday, 19 January 2006 06:46 (nineteen years ago)

They needed to pull a Mariah and go w the ballad.

deej.. (deej..), Thursday, 19 January 2006 06:55 (nineteen years ago)

WTF youze guyz is crazee, "Touch" is a great song, and a very atypical sound for Lil Jon as well. What killed the momentum was the fact that the single had been around for so long that the hipsters like us were over it by the time the public caught on. Okay that's not it. But it's not a bad song by any means, so sez me and I'm often right.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Thursday, 19 January 2006 06:59 (nineteen years ago)

haha yeah i don't really know what that means, it was only out on the album for a month or so before it got pushed as a single/video with T.I. on the remix. but whatever, I meant that aside from not liking it as a song it was a poor single choice, "Talkin' About" or any of the more "1 Thing"ish tracks would've probably sold more copies of the album.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Thursday, 19 January 2006 07:02 (nineteen years ago)

TI is amazing on the 'touch' rmx - it's the equivalent of 'baby boy' for me, at the time 'crazy in love' and '1 thing' were inescapable and incredible and year-defining but i actually prefer the more ostensibly generic follow-ups.

was 'man up' on the american version of the album? it's listed as a bonus track on my copy and is probably my favourite non-single.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 19 January 2006 08:44 (nineteen years ago)

Whoa.

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Thursday, 19 January 2006 12:53 (nineteen years ago)

I like the way you get a succession of auditory images: bells ringing (okay, maybe metaphorical, but the metaphor gets pretty fleshed out with the bing bong part), car keys, high heels.

Also, I am amazed that I'm not annoyed by the breathy spoken part near the end of the song. It could have been just some sex kitten sort of thing, but it comes off more like there's really a subject behind it, with an inner life.

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Thursday, 19 January 2006 14:05 (nineteen years ago)

I was thinking about this track today. It has such an amazing start and doesn't have any wasted space. Fantastic. I can take or leave the album though, especially "Touch".

So what else is there that's a lot like this that I might not have heard?

Christina Milian feat. Young Jeezy, "Say I"

All the obvious reasons as to why it couldn't possibly be as jaw-droppingly revelatory as "1 Thing" (Cool & Dre instead of Rich Harrison, CM instead of Amerie, Jeezy instead of blissful silence) absolutely apply, but it's been my go-to track when I want to hear a sample set ablaze like a Viking funeral ship.

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 02:55 (nineteen years ago)

Actually I always associate Christina Milian's "Whatever You Want" with "1 Thing", although it's going for more of a smoove disco vibe. I guess maybe the fact that it has Joe Budden on it, and Joe's "Pump It Up" was a bit like "1 Thing", provides something of a conceptual link.

Tha Rayne's "Didn't Ya Know" is fabulous too.

Also try Mya's "Fallen (Zone 4 Remix)"

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 06:07 (nineteen years ago)

i meant work the angles not triple optics

-+-++-++-, Wednesday, 12 April 2006 10:59 (nineteen years ago)

...and er it still doesnt sound anything like 1 thing?

super obvious answer = amerie 'talkin about' off the same album, hot as hell but too close to 1 thing to ever get some shine; or even better yet 'loves off the chain', a stupendous unreleased classic tacked onto the 'touch' promo, and with its own weird danny krivit re-edit 12. u can trawl thru the lost richcraft archives all day long for similar kicks, janet jackson - 'pops up', mary j blige's 'out my head'... jennifer lopez 'whatever u wanna do' as well, shadowing 'get right'....

non richcrafts to greater / lesser xtent

lil mo - dem boyz
nicole wray - if i was your girlfriend
rihanna - let me

good call with Lil Mo's "Dem Boyz." actually, Chucky Thompson productions in general, since he was kinda the proto-Rich Harrison.

it's kind of a bummer that "Jiggle It" might cross over outside of Baltimore, I guess Young Leek is the new B. Rich.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 13:47 (nineteen years ago)

rtcotm (mwah), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 14:58 (nineteen years ago)

B. Rich was a one hit wonder circa '02, "Woah Now" was on BET all the time but I don't know how much radio play it got in other places.

Young Leek got signed last year after having that one song out for like a month, so people around here are pretty mad about it. but the producer of that track, Blaq Starr, has done a ton of Baltimore club hits.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 15:08 (nineteen years ago)

Anyone else heard "Take Control"?

Basically, it sounds kinda like "1 Thing", but less minimal and less good, but you probably already guessed that. Of course, there's a lot of room between "1 Thing" and "bad", and this falls somewhere in there. Rich Harrison is Rich Harrison, (or someone else is Rich Harrison, that's been happening a lot lately) big horns, extraneous percussion, etc. I like the dark surf guitar and the use of the male background vocals. (That whole pre-chorus section is a nice build.) Amerie's singing is more soul shouter-ly than usual (which in my book is a plus, though I realize a lot of ILMers don't like soul shouters, but boo to them). The best moment is at the begining of the second verse. "I gotta tell you how much I love it/ When you kiss my neck in public/ I try my best not to blush" and totally sings that last line with a blush. The song needs more a hook though.

Pretty good! (Ridiculous video, but whatever.)

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 4 February 2019 23:10 (six years ago)

Love it... I nominated / voted for the double EP in the albums poll (think it was my #2!); but I don't expect to see it place, due to apparent lack of interest here.

i stan corrected (morrisp), Monday, 4 February 2019 23:18 (six years ago)

It's just, like, perfect modern R&B to me... somehow it hits dead-center of a sweet spot

i stan corrected (morrisp), Monday, 4 February 2019 23:20 (six years ago)

The EPs felt like terrible joyless trend chasing to me :(

Get Me Bodied (Extended Mix), Tuesday, 5 February 2019 02:23 (six years ago)

:( is right!

i stan corrected (morrisp), Tuesday, 5 February 2019 02:50 (six years ago)

not just trend-chasing but devoid of anything that made her seem like such a unique and singular presence when she was first releasing music

she looks great in that video though

boxedjoy, Wednesday, 6 February 2019 14:11 (six years ago)

i've been listening to Because I Love It a lot lately and that's just emphasised how disappointing those EPs were

ufo, Wednesday, 6 February 2019 14:17 (six years ago)

I can’t believe you guys are listening to the same EPs as me!!

(but I’ve gathered that my tastes don’t necessarily jibe with too many others on here, esp. when it comes to pop/R&B, so I won’t trip...)

"truly you are tripping" -- me at ilm every time this song wins a ballot poll

dyl, Saturday, 19 October 2019 18:28 (five years ago)

has it? this place is alright

maffew12, Saturday, 19 October 2019 18:29 (five years ago)

won the 05-09 poll and the 00s decade poll

dyl, Saturday, 19 October 2019 18:31 (five years ago)

it's fun to think about how much less appreciated this song would be if jennifer lopez had successfully pilfered it

dyl, Saturday, 19 October 2019 19:42 (five years ago)

guess she wasn't there when they called

maffew12, Saturday, 19 October 2019 20:07 (five years ago)

I fn hate that cheap tinny sounding sample and the song has the bossy joylessness of enforced fun. The other terrible song of this era I hate is that one with Kelly Rowland and Nellie.

plax (ico), Sunday, 20 October 2019 07:35 (five years ago)

I’m pretty ILX hivemind-ey but ngl I struggle to get into this one? The beat’s amazing but the chorus is a little too annoying.. “shrill” is the word that comes to mind

I will hear no bad words about nelly and kelly rowland’s dilemma though

josh az (2011nostalgia), Sunday, 20 October 2019 08:14 (five years ago)

ooh I just remembered the Eve remix is a thing. Her verse is lots of fun

josh az (2011nostalgia), Sunday, 20 October 2019 08:16 (five years ago)

“Dilemma” is cool because they tried to send a text using Microsoft Excel in the video. People were really really stupid with technology back in the day.

Mr. Snrub, Sunday, 20 October 2019 14:24 (five years ago)

I figured that's just how things were done in Nellyville.

But I just Googled this and found that it almost started a class war. https://www.buzzfeed.com/ikrd/nelly-kelly-rowland-excel

maffew12, Sunday, 20 October 2019 14:47 (five years ago)

I find it shrill and clattery and ugly in a bad way. maybe it'll grow on me

frame casual (dog latin), Sunday, 20 October 2019 16:43 (five years ago)

This song is good & iconic but not my favorite of the rich Harrison x Amelie songs or rich Harrison songs proper .... as a song “get right” by jlo is better to me even if Amerie is obv >>>>

“Rollin down my face” by amerie is 🔥
