classic!

miccio (miccio), Monday, 14 March 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

Only a classic if you're a freshman in college after growing up in a very small town.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Monday, 14 March 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

Was this the MAKE IT RIIIIIIIIGHT / BURN MY LIIIIIIIIIIFE song? There was a line about washing feet, wasn't there? Live (via Ed K) going head-long into its own little precious headspace = classic, regardless of results (which, to me, top most anything from their "big" album).

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 14 March 2005 20:24 (twenty years ago)

LET ME RIIIIIIIIIDE - WTF, this isn't DMX!

i sooooo do not miss mid-to-late-90s "alternative" rock ... why why WHY bring back these bad memories?!?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 14 March 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

I will carry a torch for their first album to my grave!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 14 March 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

This song is a stone-cold bonafide 100% classic in every possible sense of the word "classic".

everyone in high school called this album Secret Sodomy

miccio (miccio), Monday, 14 March 2005 20:32 (twenty years ago)

I thought about googling the lyrics but I think I'm just gonna keep yelling "MORE FEEET!!! (cuz I got to haaaaave iiiit)"

miccio (miccio), Monday, 14 March 2005 20:35 (twenty years ago)

Oh, fuck - the memory of this song is coming back to me like a Minority Report precog flashforward. MY FEVER NEEDS MORE REVERB ON THE SHOUTING!

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 14 March 2005 20:37 (twenty years ago)

shame they gave their finest track such a shit-ugly video

miccio (miccio), Monday, 14 March 2005 20:38 (twenty years ago)

Classic for sure. My favorite Live single and it sort of sounds like Helmet if they were dynamic and not boring. It's been a while but I remember liking the video's coldy executed depiction of a natatorium treated as a cheap motel by a mass of joyless, plain-looking couples.

herbert hebert (herbert hebert), Monday, 14 March 2005 20:53 (twenty years ago)

Dud dud dud dud dud dud dud dud dud dud dud dud dud dud dud dud dud dud dud. Video's even worse.

Everyone knows that Live only had one great song ,and this really wasn't it.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Monday, 14 March 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

the appeal of this song TRULY escapes me ... the same way that 50 cent's appeal escapes dan perry or alex. the same goes for live, as well.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 14 March 2005 20:58 (twenty years ago)

Bill, if you say "Lightning Crashes", I will hunt you down and make you listen to Ed K's Tricky collab until your ears fall off.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 14 March 2005 20:59 (twenty years ago)

"Lightning Crashes".

dud

I was really into Live in middle school, then this song came out and I was like "fuck these dudes"

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Monday, 14 March 2005 21:09 (twenty years ago)

my girlfriend was going through my cd collection the other day and pointed out that i own not just throwing copper, not just secret samadhi, but also mental jewelry and even their debut EP, four songs.

she now has the trump card in any future arguments about our collections.

marc h., Monday, 14 March 2005 21:26 (twenty years ago)

I completely forgot Ed had a cameo in Fight Club until I caught a bit of it on F/X the other day.

Anyway, Secret Samadhi might have been the first album I ever bought on release date, but it was definitely the first album I ever regretted purchasing. I wore out a dubbed cassette of Throwing Copper and I liked the guitar in "Lakini's Juice," but Secret Samadhi was so terrible on the whole that I felt personally wronged. I don't think I listened to it much after the first week.

Jeff Reguilon (Talent Explosion), Monday, 14 March 2005 21:52 (twenty years ago)

Will you call them freaks? Or will you call them gods?

marc h., Monday, 14 March 2005 21:58 (twenty years ago)

"Operation Spirit" is soooo much better, even if it is a bit misguided and slightly anthemic in a pompous way.

Quit glaring at Ian Riese-Moraine! He's mentally fraught! (Eastern Mantra), Monday, 14 March 2005 23:16 (twenty years ago)

This is the only Live song that doesn't make me vomit and/or laugh.
I'm a sucker for 'chunka chunka' guitar riffs. [yes, that's a technical term]

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 14 March 2005 23:27 (twenty years ago)

I thought he was saying "Burly Burly Burly" there.

The milk-bar video was so bizarre.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 01:32 (twenty years ago)

oh please... the duddest dud to ever dud

Seuss, Tuesday, 15 March 2005 01:38 (twenty years ago)

oh man...a couple weeks ago I caught the SNL rerun where they played this song. memories..I hated all the Throwing Copper singles but I thought this one was alright, although it was immediately clear that the followup album was going to tank. that main riff is so heavy.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 01:39 (twenty years ago)

After suffering through their earlier shit I sought never to hear their crap again and I believe I succeeded! I have no memory of ever hearing this song at all!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 01:47 (twenty years ago)

I loved loved loved the first two albums and debut ep, but this song and its corresponding album were trash trash trash.

Of course, I like the single from the album after this one about the dolphins, so what the hell do I know?

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 01:47 (twenty years ago)

hahahaha DOLPHINS CRY, I totally forgot about that one.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 02:05 (twenty years ago)

the song starts out okayish and then it gets to the chorus and you're like 'Can I hear the dolphins WHAT?'

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 02:09 (twenty years ago)

"Lightning Crashes"

oh you have got to be shitting me

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 02:25 (twenty years ago)

I've been hearing that song on the radio a lot lately. Pure Pearl Jam lite with Ed making sounds that no human should be proud to have created.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 02:27 (twenty years ago)

sorry man, it works. The only time their self-importance was even close to merited.

I also like "White: Discussion" OK and the bridge to "I, Alone" is pretty awesome, but besides that "Lightning Crashes" towers miles above the rest of their catalogue.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 03:09 (twenty years ago)

I'm shocked at the amount of "classic"s in here.

It was Live who paved the way for Creed, who as everyone knows is the devil. So in essence, Live was the antichrist.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 15 March 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

yes, but growing up in SE PA, these guys were so dudly they willed themselves classic. they wouldn't stop touring the area! and the mythology surrounding them was ridiculous. every roommate i had in college would tell me something about this band (they useta be skinheads/nazis, you know) - one d00d went so far as to hang a picture of them promoting whatever tour it was in '97 in our room!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

What was the name of the single that preceded "Lightning Crashes" - I have vaguely fond memories of it (esp. in light of the turgid duddery of "LC").

blackmail.is.my.life (blackmail.is.my.life), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

No, not "I Alone" - the acousticy one that sounds a lot like REM. "To love a God, to fear the flame, to burn a cross that has a name" or something? And then he busts into some "EEEEEEEE" "Lion Sleeps Tonight" belting?

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

Oh, wait, I just remembered part of the chorus - "we won't be raped / we won't be scarred like that". Acropalyptic self-castigating middle-class poo-poo. I revoke my vaguely fond memories.

haha, yeah, everyone I know who's from a certain part of Pennsylvania seems to have a "we saw Live when they were just getting started" story.

I think the sequence of Throwing Copper singles/videos was:

Selling The Drama -> I Alone -> Lightning Crashes -> White, Discussion

with All Over You somewhere in there as a big radio hit with no video. White, Discussion was the one that I thought was tolerable, at least at first.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 17:36 (twenty years ago)

careers like Live's (and Third Eye Blind's, and Hootie & The Blowfish) kind of mystify me, because they have like 4 or 5 big singles off one album, and then can't get a hit as big as any of those after that one album. so they're not really one-hit wonders, but it's like their fame lasts for exactly one album cycle.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

yeah al - i agree, but strangely the marketing for secret samadhi presented them as though they were the new number one band in the world! i recall turning down invitations to see them - i simply didn't get it, even with the local connection (imaginary, you betcha): i thought they were like dave matthews band.

in fact, it's hard to imagine them having been that famous now. also: alanis morrissette to thread (re many hit singles, and then poof!)

blackmail.is.my.life (blackmail.is.my.life), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 18:05 (twenty years ago)

it seems naive or short-sighted to imply that it was an especially mid-90's phenomenon, but it really seems like it was, doesn't it?

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

I think it's a 70s & 80s phenomenon, too (though probably more 80s than 70s) (and more new-wave than anything else I can recall) (though maybe some R&B acts fall into this ditch, too).

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

"Greedy Fly" and "Swallowed" off Razorblade Suitcase were both pretty big in my high school, tho. And I remember seeing a video for the "Mouth" remix on MTV.

marc h., Tuesday, 15 March 2005 20:43 (twenty years ago)

I still think "Machine Head" & "Everything Zen" (& "Glycerine"!!!!) (on the Tonight Show!!!!) lapped those Albini-abetted bad boys from Razorblade Suitcase. And the remix from the Julia Delpy werewolf flick.

yes, but growing up in SE PA, these guys were so dudly they willed themselves classic. they wouldn't stop touring the area! and the mythology surrounding them was ridiculous.

so what yer saying, then, is that live were THE HOOTERS of the 90s?!?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 21:31 (twenty years ago)

oh dear god - i had a hand-me-down hooters tee shirt. i wish i knew what happened to it (i'd be so sad if i lost it) - and my mom went to high school with john oates (north penn represent).

Live were like having a local, Orwellian Dave Matthews Band - omnipresent and always dudly.

blackmail.is.my.life (blackmail.is.my.life), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 04:04 (twenty years ago)

"Swallowed" has aged surprisingly well. I still prefer Sixteen Stone to Nevermind (except for Polly), I guess I was two years too young for Nirvana to really hit me (but was just right for the pretenders to the throne).

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 05:45 (twenty years ago)

Beavis & Butt-head watching "I Alone" was pretty classic, where they're talking about how the drummer forgot to bring his sticks so he has to just run around like a jackass through the whole video.

Actually he had the sticks, but no drums, so he kind of air drummed with the sticks, I think.

actually he had NOTHING. he just hopped around like a jackass in slo-mo mouthing along with the chorus. supposedly thought the video was really heavy and improved by seeing their reserved drummer go apeshit but Live has to rationalize a lot of idiocy to keep from blowing their heads off. Me and my sister used to count the amount of times Ed K. touches his head in that video. He clearly wasn't used to the bald pate.

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 16 October 2013 05:08 (eleven years ago)

Live (/ˈlaɪv/, often typeset as LĪVE) is an American rock band from York, Pennsylvania, composed of Chad Taylor (lead guitar), Patrick Dahlheimer (bass), Chad Gracey (drums), and Chris Shinn (vocals). Live's original lead singer Ed Kowalczyk left the band in November 2009.

On November 30, 2009, Chad Taylor revealed that what had initially been termed a "two-year hiatus" was more likely the end of the band, due to what he felt were inappropriate and possibly illegal actions by Ed Kowalczyk,[5] which have resulted in a lawsuit being filed against him by the other three band members.[6] In June 2011, Taylor revealed that he, Gracey and Dahlheimer were to reform Live without Kowalczyk,[7] who confirmed that he would not work with the other three again.[8] In March 2012, Chris Shinn, formerly of the band Unified Theory, replaced Kowalczyk as lead singer.[9]

On January 24, 2012 Taylor, Dahlheimer and Gracey announced that they were leading members in a project to renovate a four story building at 210 York Street in York. Three floors will house a technology company, creating 60 new jobs. The building will also include a brand new recording studio.[17]

The band returned from their nearly three-year hiatus on March 12, 2012, with Chris Shinn, formerly of Unified Theory, as their new lead singer. The new line-up performed before an invited audience at the Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center in York. The band performed as a six-piece with The Gracious Few's Sean Hennesy on guitar and Alexander Lefever on keyboards.[9][18] In July 2012, Live commenced more legal proceedings against Ed Kowalczyk, this time for misuse of the band's name while promoting his live performances.[19]
Live's first major tour with Shinn was as part of the Summerland Tour 2013, playing 35 shows across the US. Other featured bands were Everclear, Filter and Sponge.[20]

"...And the Gods Socially Distanced" (C. Grisso/McCain), Sunday, 24 May 2020 05:18 (five years ago)

I enjoyed Secret Samadhi at the time, it was enjoyable pop, albeit nowhere near as immediate or ear-wormy as Throwing Copper. it had to do since I wanted to start buying extreme metal albums but since I didn't have a job and they'd be buying me any music, my mother and father would literally read the entire lyric books of every album I bought, and if they saw something they didn't like, I got an earful, and I didn't wanna get grounded for "tricking" them. so Live would have to do.

my dad objected to Aerosmith's Get a Grip ffs, because of Eat the Rich's "take your grey poupon my friend, and shove it up your ass".

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 24 May 2020 10:38 (five years ago)

lol I don't think he bothered to check on the lyrics for this album, somehow.

I remember being so starved to hear good music in the mid-90s, pre-mp3 explosion, I used to call 1-800-MusicNow, which was some music ordering service, and they'd let you say a band's name, and choose an album, and they'd play short snippets from 4 or 5 songs. I actually played it on speakerphone for several bands one day and recorded these snippets.

so thoughts after reading this:

*Tynes talks a lot of shit for someone with a demon's resume
*How could you file bankruptcy 5 times in an 8 year span when a Chapter 11 takes 7 years to discharge
*The fucking Charlotte Hornets's owner's kid was their temporary lead singer for a few years...lol
*it's kinda not shocking that Ed just fired everyone and went on with hired guns. there's very little distinct about the bass, guitar playing, and drumming in this band, they sort of live or die by his vocals and songwriting (for better or worse). this isn't like Slayer changing drummers and having a different feel rhythmically, very plug and play.
*Taylor seems naive to a ridiculous degree and he was a dick for what he did to his other bandmates in taking a larger cut
*of course Gracey is a Trumper
*Ed seems to let Hynes way too far off of the hook because of his anger at Taylor

Back in the 1990s I went on a summer trip bringing together different high schools. One of the participants was Ed Kowalczyk’s sister. Some Live fans kept hovering around her, expecting her to give insights into Kowalczyk’s lyrics, even though she was years younger than her famous brother and probably wouldn’t know anything.

But I still remember decades later that these fans raved around Throwing Copper, but whenever the conversation turned to Secret Samadhi (then the most recent release), they seemed confused and somehow disappointed by the album.

Ah, it was "I Alone". Yeah, after I saw this a few years ago, I pretty much wrote off the rest of the band: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNrQOUtXYOo

One of the best bands of the 90's hands down. Such intensity in Ed's voice.

Listen closely to the bass in the verses.....so ominous and chilling....sounds like a living creature, its breath rising and falling. Amazing. Track gives me goosebumps. Earphones, loud!

Live has always been a thinking persons type of band. The way the music and lyrics are laid out are very artistic and intelligently arranged. One of my favorite bands from the 90's

This is the one song that convinced to buy some good speakers. It was about twenty years ago. Live deserves the best. My Mom loves Live. They are easily underrated, but loved by all.

i associate this band with a friend i had from about 13-15 yo named m!tch. his dad was a software guy who did office-y looking mini wood and wire sculptures on the side - lots of aquamarine speckled with yellow, that sort of thing - dilbert vibes. m!tch and his dad were alright, i went with them to my first concert (dave matthews band lol). i never quite had m!tch's enthusiasm for live though.

key lyrics

We hit a couch, the place was packed
With sweaty palms, sweaty thongs, and sweaty backs
My mouth was dry, my brain cold high, the groove was right, so I decided to ignite
Your eyes met mine, you skirt began to rise, and so did I
Now you know that i took that prize
In the middle of the club, in the middle of the club, in the middle of club
Now tell me!

I like how there’s a completely baffling reference to the death of Christ just so you know you’re still listening to Live.

i try to ruthlessly interrogate the opinions i had when i was a teenager but one that's remained unshakable is that the lyrics on secret samadhi are among the most embarrassing ever penned. and they just got worse from there

i love "lakini's juice" though i can't deny, potentially because it is one of the dumbest songs ever made
