I think M.I.A. is rubbish.

moogman, Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:36 (twenty years ago)

So do I.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:44 (twenty years ago)

you have to be joking..

james cooper, Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:51 (twenty years ago)

I think M.I.A. is rubbish.

green uno skip card (ex machina), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:55 (twenty years ago)

I think M.I.A. is mostly rubbish.

RS £aRue (rockist_scientist), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 23:01 (twenty years ago)

zzzzzzzzz

heywood jablomi (heywood), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 00:15 (twenty years ago)

So how many seconds until we get a "The thread where people who think people who think MIA is rubbish say people who think MIA is rubbish are rubbish"?

mike h. (mike h.), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 00:16 (twenty years ago)

I thought this was going to be about daft punk

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 00:20 (twenty years ago)

M.I.A. is awesome.

What?

Oh.

Fuck.

Stupornaut (natepatrin), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 00:24 (twenty years ago)

I think M.I.A. is roffle

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 04:21 (twenty years ago)

MIA no longer exists as music to me, purely as discourse. Although not actually having the album or mp3s with me is surely a part of that.

deej., Wednesday, 16 March 2005 04:26 (twenty years ago)

M.I.A. is an abstract concept in my mind because I didn't like the mp3's and deleted them and can only vaguely remember what they sound like.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 04:30 (twenty years ago)

zzzzzzzzz

-- heywood jablomi (emot...), March 16th, 2005 7:15 PM.

yeah that was my reaction to her music too.

eman (eman), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 04:31 (twenty years ago)

Let the backlash begin!

Mickey (modestmickey), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 04:55 (twenty years ago)

I like M.I.A.'s music well-enough. But is she the Barry Bonds to everyone else's Joe McEwing? NO, FFS!! She's more like mid-period Mike Sweeney, when every swing produced an RBI!

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 05:04 (twenty years ago)

I think M.I.A. is M.E.H.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 05:14 (twenty years ago)

That was semi-cathartic. But what I really need is a thread where people who *still* think modern top 40 country is rubbish (even Big & Rich) can say so.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 05:20 (twenty years ago)

Let the backlash begin!

To be fair, I've been riding the fence since the beginning. ;-)

deej., Wednesday, 16 March 2005 05:21 (twenty years ago)

Without fear of reprisals, right? Cuz the worry that you are gonna get a bullet in the head for daring to let fly with this shocking opinions is one which haunts your every waking minute, yeah.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 05:23 (twenty years ago)

i just heard this today!!!

there's this band is SF called cRaCk:WEAREROCK from a couple years ago that all of you MIA people should be checking out.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 05:38 (twenty years ago)

i don't think they're nearly as trendy and they're much noisier and have more chaotic beats but MIA's got the same gist down.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 05:40 (twenty years ago)

Without fear of reprisals, right? Cuz the worry that you are gonna get a bullet in the head for daring to let fly with this shocking opinions is one which haunts your every waking minute, yeah.

This internet music shit's no joke kid.

deej., Wednesday, 16 March 2005 05:40 (twenty years ago)

I don't remember them sounding much like this.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 05:41 (twenty years ago)

"This internet music shit's no joke kid."

Uh sure.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 05:43 (twenty years ago)

give them guys much much better hooks and much much better beats and you might have a point gygax!

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 05:44 (twenty years ago)

thank god rock is back, huh guys?

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 05:44 (twenty years ago)

we can be 35 forever!!!

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 05:44 (twenty years ago)

will out of shape white guys ever run out of fascinating sounds they can make with guitars?

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 05:46 (twenty years ago)

I'm wondering who is missing the joke here more.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 05:47 (twenty years ago)

Uh sure.

It was a joke...in all honesty, I'm not really riding the fence, i just don't care either way. And no, I don't expect anyone to be shocked by or care what i have to say on the matter.

deej., Wednesday, 16 March 2005 05:47 (twenty years ago)

let's hope not! mia (and um whoever else is trendy and only talked about on the internet anyway unlike rock n roll which definitely still has the PULSE OF THE NATION!!!) is rubbish! 35 (at heart) forever!!!

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 05:48 (twenty years ago)

funhaters must be this tall to ride this ride (sorry deej, you're out)

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 05:50 (twenty years ago)

I don't even understand whats going on.

deej., Wednesday, 16 March 2005 05:52 (twenty years ago)

this one time i was listening to college radio and omg it changed my life

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 05:53 (twenty years ago)

man that new will oldham is great

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 05:55 (twenty years ago)

Your body must be 0% straw to ride this ride.

deej., Wednesday, 16 March 2005 05:55 (twenty years ago)

the great thing about noise bands is the sense of community, the sense that the music matters and is doing something fresh and new

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 05:56 (twenty years ago)

not sure what j blount is on about, as i have yet to hear this "rock" person (who is apparently back you say?). but i do agree with the rubbish part, so right on blount you pundit!

eman (eman), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 05:56 (twenty years ago)

yeah I think gygax brushed his elbow against a candlestick that was actually the switch that initiates blount's launch sequence.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 05:59 (twenty years ago)

you should listen to some college radio man, that shit will blow your mind.

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 05:59 (twenty years ago)

CHILL

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:01 (twenty years ago)

YOU MUST CHILL! I HAVE HIDDEN YOUR KEYS!

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:01 (twenty years ago)

this one time this dude on the college radio played a track and at first it was just some really halfassed garage rock like from around 1966 only played like some new york record geeks from 1986 only they only played that part for like a minute or so like it was 1981 or something and then it was just blaargh feedback for like fifteen minutes or so, fucking mindblowing man, like nothing you've barely heard before.

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:02 (twenty years ago)

"college radio" - oh, like The Four Freshmen?

eman (eman), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:02 (twenty years ago)

i can't chill al, college radio has set me free! halfassed retreads + 'a sense of community' + dead air = liberation brother! join in!

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:03 (twenty years ago)

eman liberation is merely six strings away brother, take a walk with me

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:03 (twenty years ago)

somebody get the smelling salts, he's gone into an epileptic seizure of snarky sarcasm!

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:04 (twenty years ago)

when nate young promises not to come in your mouth it's the sweetest lie ever told

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:09 (twenty years ago)

Um, not sure what rock music seeming a bit exhausted right now has to do with whether or not MIA is any good.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:16 (twenty years ago)

who is nate young and what does he have to do with me not liking my dancehall watered-down?

eman (eman), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:16 (twenty years ago)

Especially when ILM's sacred cow of modern country music sounds a lot like warmed over rock music.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:17 (twenty years ago)

o no! sacred cows! thank god for college radio!

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:18 (twenty years ago)

Uh, like I said, mentioning college radio =/= making it clear what's so great about M.I.A.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:19 (twenty years ago)

hold on: are you characterizing college radio as being in opposition of M.I.A.?

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:20 (twenty years ago)

Seriously though, I think if I was at a good dance party, I could probably get down to MIA, so maybe "meh" is too negative a characterization.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:20 (twenty years ago)

i didn't go to college. y'see my father was a leader of a rebel army... ;@)

eman (eman), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:22 (twenty years ago)

I have a bit of a gut reaction against someone who compares herself to the PLO and uses it as a badge of cool.

And by the way, I like the Superwolf disc just fine, thanks. A couple of really good songs, the rest is not too bad.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:23 (twenty years ago)

See, I'm basically just Jim DeRogatis, except what he'd be like if he got laid.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:24 (twenty years ago)

i'm just wondering why everybody didn't represent on the appropriate thread? was college radio blowing your mind that day? maybe some cornell graduate was changing your ideas of what country music is? maybe some brown students were totally rererewriting the rules of rock? or maybe there wasn't enough press to define yourself against yet?

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:26 (twenty years ago)

hurting which badges of cool meet your approval?

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:28 (twenty years ago)

I didn't represent because, like I said, I just found her sort of "meh". Didn't have strong enough feelings at the time. Still don't, really, but felt an urge to weigh in. Wouldn't say "rubbish" though. Good dance music, not fucking mind-blowing.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:29 (twenty years ago)

what is fucking mind blowing?

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:29 (twenty years ago)

Blount, uh, maybe ones that don't portray me as a fanged baby-killing devil?

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:30 (twenty years ago)

which song was that again? wait - are we talking about x-clan all of sudden? (do you hate x-clan?)

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:31 (twenty years ago)

Ok Blount, I'll take your goddamn bait. Albums I've been liking a lot lately:

Miles Davis Live at Fillmore East
Jay-Z - The Blueprint
William Parker - And William Danced
Blonde Redhead - Melody of Certain Damages Lemons

Ok, you happy? Go ahead, make your point.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:33 (twenty years ago)

hey eman represent on the pop dancehall 2005 better than mia tip recommends already? is it gonna happen this year too? or is it gonna roll to pop reggaeton? or even pop grime? o no, wait, strike that last one - FORTIFY TREEHOUSE! REPEAT: FORTIFY TREEHOUSE!

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:34 (twenty years ago)

The PLO line is in Sunshowers.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:35 (twenty years ago)

xxxxxxxxpost - i didn't know about the "appropriate thread" so excuuuse me, Sir Pantiesinnabunch!

(at this point i'm just baiting blount for kicks... yes, i'm that bored)

from that thread:
And M.I.A. is better than just about everybody who came out of Jamaica since "Under Me Sleng Teng"

jesus, that thread is obviously completely retarded coming out the gates with a statement like that. why waste my time?

eman (eman), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:37 (twenty years ago)

PLO we don't surrender = portraying you as a fanged baby-killing devil??!!? WTF?

More Baffled in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:38 (twenty years ago)

wait - what badges of cool do those records have exactly?

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:39 (twenty years ago)

No dude, PLO portraying me as a fanged baby-killing devil.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:39 (twenty years ago)

They HAVE?!?! Where?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:40 (twenty years ago)

Wait, are you Ariel Sharon?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:40 (twenty years ago)

dude snrub's the second poster on this thread so how 'retarded' a thread is coming out of the gates is clearly not a problem for you!

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:40 (twenty years ago)

Um, I didn't say those records have badges of cool. You asked me what I think is "mind-blowingly good" lately.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:40 (twenty years ago)

hurting you're not ariel sharon by chance are you?

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:41 (twenty years ago)

Alex, don't play dumb. I mean Jews. This is pretty well known.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:41 (twenty years ago)

Pretty well known where? I've not seen any PLO literature that accuses me or my family of being fanged baby killers.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:43 (twenty years ago)

Ok, Ok, I'm Ariel Sharon.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:43 (twenty years ago)

Got it.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:44 (twenty years ago)

xxxxxxxpost - comparing Mr. Snrub's post of "so do I" with chuck eddy dismissing all of modern dancehall with a wave of his hand????

hahahahah!

eman (eman), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:48 (twenty years ago)

http://www.shalomjerusalem.com/jerusalem/jerusalem14.htm

I hate to cite these incendiary Israel propaganda sites, but there's a list of quotes from official PA newspapers if you scroll down.

Anyway, I guess it's arguable that she in no other way relates to the PLO, but that seems unlikely to me.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:49 (twenty years ago)

I don't even know who Jan and Dean are. May I leave the stand now?

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:50 (twenty years ago)

deej otm rofflelol

eman (eman), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:52 (twenty years ago)

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:52 (twenty years ago)

AND THEN IT TURNED OUT DK WAS GUNNAR NELSON! MINDS WERE FUCKING BLOWN! IT WAS LIKE THAT EPISODE OF THE PRACTICE!

it always confuses me that there have been a bunch of different network shows in the past 10 years with the names Boston Legal, Boston Common and Boston Public.

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 07:05 (twenty years ago)

That one's boston legal, right? Boston Public didn't last very long, did it. Boston Common was one of the worst sitcoms i've ever seen.

deej., Wednesday, 16 March 2005 07:05 (twenty years ago)

yeah i think you've ID'd them correctly. I had a friend who was obsessed with Boston Public, I could never suss out if it was an ironic/guilty pleasure OC type thing.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 07:06 (twenty years ago)

Boston Common was pretty terrible though yeah. one of those 90s NBC shows that couldn't do shit even with a Friends/Seinfeld lead-in.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 07:08 (twenty years ago)

that's all david kelley's fault al (well not boston common i don't think). i like boston legal alot more than them other shows.

To add to the confusion ... the principal from Boston Public was on this weeks episode of Boston Legal playing ... a high school principal! Good times.

deej., Wednesday, 16 March 2005 07:09 (twenty years ago)

boston public was the school one right? they changed the cast of that show like every two years. fyvush finkel was on it.

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 07:09 (twenty years ago)

was it the same character or did he have a different name? (xp)

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 07:10 (twenty years ago)

There were so many hot teachers at that school.

xp don't recall what his name was on either show.

deej., Wednesday, 16 March 2005 07:10 (twenty years ago)

yeah Boston Public had Fyvush Finkel. and Michael Rapaport!

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 07:11 (twenty years ago)

haha yeah they really seemed to keep coming back to the "teacher sleeps with a student" plotline over and over like it was shocking every time

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 07:11 (twenty years ago)

even Joey Slotnick tasted the forbidden fruit, if i'm not mistaken

eman (eman), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 07:12 (twenty years ago)

does anyone want to hear me go on about why Paul Giamatti is a poor man's Joey Slotnick?

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 07:13 (twenty years ago)

deej., Wednesday, 16 March 2005 07:15 (twenty years ago)

Back to Boston Public - it was amazing to me how much the principal seemed in countdown to heartattack mode nearly every episode. My high school superintendent looked like the guy from the Men's Warehouse, "I guarantee it."

deej., Wednesday, 16 March 2005 07:17 (twenty years ago)

that's me pouring out the thread and spreading it freely? (xp)

They should do "Law and Order: Parking Patrol"

ah thanx al. what's this show 'townies' that apparently had molly ringwald, ron livingston, gilmore mom, and jenna elfman?

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 07:37 (twenty years ago)

Plot Summary for
"Union Square" (1997)

Set in a New York diner called Union Square, this sitcom tells the story of a lawyer turned play-writer, an aspiring actress who just got to the Big Apple, an ex-con, an absent-minded waiter, and a neurotic real estate broker.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 07:38 (twenty years ago)

i remember Townies!

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 07:38 (twenty years ago)

I didn't discover the Hughes canon until later on so I didn't understand the significance of the (failed) Ringwald comeback attempt at the time.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 07:39 (twenty years ago)

Hard to believe that wasn't a massive smash.

Other bad sitcoms on other networks: that horrible dharma and greg (wtf why did people watch this) and that new Cosby show.

gilmore mom is another one that got kicked around soooo many network shows

for a while she was the worst thing to happen to Newsradio pre-Hartman's death

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 07:42 (twenty years ago)

remember when John Lovitz guest-starred on Newsradio on 2 seperate occasions as 2 different/unrelated characters, and then post-Hartman was added to the cast as a 3rd character!?

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 07:42 (twenty years ago)

matt leblanc was on the married with children spinoff which lasted maybe four episodes (i saw one)

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 07:44 (twenty years ago)

according to IMDB, 4 episodes in season 4

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 07:45 (twenty years ago)

if you check out the history of guest actors on Law and Order, there are many semi-known character actors who showed up playing different bad guys/lawyers. Jerry Orbach guest-starred on an early L&O as some sleazeball, I think.

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 07:50 (twenty years ago)

Kristy McNicol was HOT in that show. She reminded me of those hot white trash chicks I grew up with, who always seemed a little bit older than everyone else because they smoked and drank and--rumor had it--gave surreptitious blowjobs beneath the bleachers. How she was related in any way to Richard Mulligan was never satisfactorily explained, unless I missed the episode where Dinah Manoff, in an effort to piss her off, spills the beans that she was adopted. Of course in the end, she isn't pissed anymore and loves Mulligan as her father, and neighbor David Leisure provides needed comic relief in an otherwise Very Special Episode by dropping by to sleazily grope at some tit.

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 07:50 (twenty years ago)

I always hated "Mad About You". It's like a show featuring annoying acquaintances of Seinfeld's crew, except we're stuck with them the entire time. Remember when the show bowed off the air? I don't either. Who knew Paul Reiser could be more hateful than he was in Aliens? This might have been worse than "My Two Dads", which had a Stamos-esque Greg Evigan and that daughter, who was hot, at least when I was 13 anyway.

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 07:58 (twenty years ago)

actually, has Paul Reiser had the most worthless career in Hollywood? He peaked when he was eaten by that alien.

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 07:59 (twenty years ago)

one of my all-time favorite SNL sketches where they lazily mashed up 2 of the host's projects was Mad About You Alien

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 07:59 (twenty years ago)

I went through a brief, dark period last year where I realized that Mad About You came on the Lifetime network late at night and watched it for about a week. I don't want to talk about it.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 08:01 (twenty years ago)

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 08:04 (twenty years ago)

NBC has aired more sitcoms than anyone else that they're tried to force down our throats A Time to Kill-McConaughey stylee shouting, "This is a CLASSIC, watch me or be IRRELEVANT!" than any other network.

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 08:05 (twenty years ago)

true, but man, there's just this horrible NYC white yuppie market niche that NBC pwned years ago and doesn't want to give up on. Hard to believe it's the same network that aired "Night Court".

(btw, I discoverd you can get that Charly 3-CD Treasure Isle rocksteady compilation from assorted vendors thru Amazon for like 7 bucks. which has nothing to do with anything except that it's really cheap and really good and I'm listening to it now so I thought I'd just say, like, people who hate M.I.A. and people who love M.I.A. probably all love rocksteady. right? 54 tracks! with a booklet and everything. not quite internet music, but almost)

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 08:19 (twenty years ago)

you're getting us off-topic! gypsy mothra how do you feel about Paul Reiser?

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 08:21 (twenty years ago)

He was great in Diner!

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 08:22 (twenty years ago)

(and he was good as the evil corporate guy in Aliens, too.)

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 08:23 (twenty years ago)

I have this theory, also, that Diner is the root of all '90s urban/urbane sitcoms. Not just Mad About You, obv., but Seinfeld, Friends, etc. Diner basically set the blueprint -- young mostly single friends sitting around endlessly wisecracking and arguing with illogical intensity about pop culture (like the Mathis-Sinatra debate, which Mickey Rourke disrupts by picking Elvis).

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 08:26 (twenty years ago)

interesting theory. i heart diner and i kinda don't wanna blame all the good and bad associated with that theory on it but it kinda fits.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 08:29 (twenty years ago)

So Reiser's the culprit, after all.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 08:34 (twenty years ago)

The power rankings of 30-ish redheads playing acerbic, hypersexual assistants are as follows:

1) Vicki Lewis, "Newsradio"

some others

351) Kathy Griffin, "Suddenly Susan"

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 08:35 (twenty years ago)

yeah, KG isn't even that good at being JR. JR is clueless in a kind of forgiveable old people way where she doesn't recognized younger celebrities, whereas KG is clueless in that she keeps trying to crack wise with lame obscure references that have nothing to do with whoever they're talking to on the red carpet and either go over their heads or make them want to get away from her even quicker than otherwise.

Doesn't a kid say that real dramatically in that baseball movie "The Sandlot"

Nobody said negative comments weren't allowed...

steve-k, Wednesday, 16 March 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

The secret with modern top 40 country is that while there have been some very good discussions as to how the format has had to change/readapt to fit the times, it's still as ultimately comfortable as an old shoe for me most of the time as I encounter it (again that's pretty much on visits home but I always like giving an ear and wondering what's currently being played in my dad's car stereo). I might not really actively love it for many reasons but I can't get annoyed with it much either.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

Not enough must see tv.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

This may also be the problem with MIA.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

negative comments are allowed, but they have to be based on politics. because it can't possibly be the music you have a problem with, oh no!

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

oh, and that fennesz album that ilm made me buy. i didn't really care for that. and that junior boys album i bought for maria for christmas. that was kinda duddy. and maria bought that xiu xiu album, but i don't know if it was cuzza ilm, but that was pretty crappy.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

Nobody said negative comments weren't allowed...

Well, it's more a matter of hyperenthusiasm being met with hypercriticism in the case of MIA, and similar things have happened all the time for many things artistic and otherwise. When you end up feeling middling about the music (me, mostly, like I've muttered MIA's music's nice enough and I would have enjoyed the show but I'm not actively flying the flag), it's slightly awkward.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

Whoever posted the pic of Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer should be elected to office. (Trivia: What was U.C.L.'s name? Answer below, after my M.I.A. comment.)

I find grime in general sort of disorienting and therefore more interesting than enjoyable. Some of M.I.A.'s stuff (and Dizzee for that matter) gets me revved up initially, but I can only take it in limited doses.

(Answer: Ki-Rok)

ClevelandPat, Wednesday, 16 March 2005 16:52 (twenty years ago)

ILM's never really convinced me to buy anything and certainly I only really joined to chat about what I did know already, especially pop, which seems less of a going concern since the halcyon days of 2002-3 9rolling singles threads excepted, but only the major acts garner that sort of attention now, AFAIK). However, some of the stuff ILM has lead me to download or be gmailed was really beyond a bore. Of course, I'm a cynic when it comes to human nature, so the less expectations you have of people, the less botherd you are.

(Best ILM tips: Kiley Dean, Rex The Dog and Stars. And a couple of Kompakt thingies. Worst: everything else (this does not necessarily include the gmails))

BARMS, Wednesday, 16 March 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I'm just a caveman. I fell on some ice and later got thawed out by some of your scientists. Your world frightens and confuses me! Sometimes the honking horns of your traffic make me want to get out of my BMW.. and run off into the hills, or wherever.. Sometimes when I get a message on my fax machine, I wonder: "Did little demons get inside and type it?" I don't know! My primitive mind can't grasp these concepts. But there is one thing I do know - when a man like my client slips and falls on a sidewalk in front of a public library, then he is entitled to no less than two million in compensatory damages, and two million in punitive damages. Thank you.

In the 'crap' column, yeah.

BARMS, Wednesday, 16 March 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

I mean, I could see Dorothy Zbornak wearing that top.

This is true. Although it also looks like something Jo Polniaczek might have worn, too. She strikes me as being more secondary character on Facts of Life than a Golden Girl.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

M.I.A. is the new name given to an artist who lacks talent but who is hyped beyond comprehension by a select few internet forum fanatics.

I think MIA is more-or-less rubbish.

Well, gosh, this thread has made me go back to MIAs site and I've listened to Galang a few more times. There is *something* about it. It does get stuck in my head. The production is subtly original. Her voice is sort of infectious, and I like the way she doesn't quite look like a celebrity, wears baggy shirts to cover up her apparent lack of a figure, and her funny-looking dance moves. The way she says "Geddan geddan geddan" keeps echoing in my ears. The other songs don't sound different enough to me from that one, so I still predict this is something everyone will get tired of pretty quickly. But like I said, I think I could get my groove on to this.

Ahem...
Shouldn't we wait until the artist in question becomes mainstream superhuge before we start with the backlash and accusations of "selling out"?
Granted, for the record, i've only heard one MIA track ("Bannanaskit") if thats represents the standard quality of an MIA track, then she really does suck eggs with the horsepower of a 17amp shop-vac.

Having just read through this entire thread, I've concluded that Must See TV is about a million times more interesting than MIA.

No mention of The Michael Richards Show? My buddy and I anticipated that show for months our freshman year of college.

Also, the post upthread about how Diner spawned the whole mid-1990s sitcom phenom (friends sitting around talking about shit) failed to mention that Tim Daly (of Must See TV Wings fame) was in that movie.

My 7th grade honors english teacher once took the time to explain to the class that Night Court really wasn't how things worked.

Also: Harry Anderson's mullet on Night Court vs Harry Anderson's mullet on Dave's World(the show featuring Meshach Taylor, best known as Hollywood from the Mannequin movies, ALSO starring James Spader!)

Plus, John Larroquette's show was great for the first two years when it was dark as fuck and about a recovering alcoholic rather than the season three retool where he got a wife & a kid.

that show was the first place i ever saw Bob Goldthwait break character.

oh yeah, and check out the list of Night Court guest stars
