Better than Ezra, "Desperately Wanting". I think that's the title. Its a killer song. It was my "indie rock" as a grade schooler.

What was that group that was really just one dude and had a horrendously long name or maybe the song title was huge or something. It was a really bland, pedestrian "trip-hop" song with a sample of some old blues singer. Primitive something or other.

the theme song to Pete and Pete killed, who was it?

Polaris or Polara or something like that.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 19:02 (twenty years ago)

I actually just downloaded that Groovy Train song a couple of months ago. It sat in my mp3 folder, occasionally popping up in a shuffle and shaming me.

Jay Watts III (jaywatts), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 19:03 (twenty years ago)

okay I'm stuck on this Dionne Farris thing, but here's the trifecta of the "original neo-soul" movement, please say thank you Alicia and Norah:

Dionne Farris - I Know
Gabrielle - Dreams
Des'ree - You Gotta Be

Which also brings to mind Me'Shell NdegéOcello - If That's Your Boyfriend (He Wasn't Last Night).

matt2 (matt2), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 19:10 (twenty years ago)

How is it that I don't recognize that Gabrielle song? Maybe I've heard it and didn't know who it was.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

Johnny Fever, unless you are joking, the Gabrielle song is the one from Magnolia that Quizkid Donnie whatever is always listening to in his car.

Jay Watts III (jaywatts), Thursday, 7 April 2005 20:50 (twenty years ago)

Who did that horrible hi-NRG type hit from around 1996 that went something like "WAAAAAAHdiscopop! You know you wanna make my mine! You know you wanna make mine!" and for its verse just repeated "I'm gonna get you baby... I'm gonna get you, yes I am!"? Urgh...that unnerved the hell out of me but I think I'll finally forget it when I learn what it's called and who does it...

Whoever did that song "Mr. Personality"...and then some other alternative radio staple that sounded very dated at the time (it sounded like something they'd play for the intro of E!'s Talk Soup or something...very 80's, sounding a bit like Momus' "I Was a Maoist Intellectual" at higher BPM) and I think it repeated something like "ex-junkie born again didn't have a clue" a hundred times over.

A while ago I was at the supermarket and I heard a song that I consider a candidate for the most generic 90's one hit wonder possible, at least in terms of North American hits. A song that I definitely recognized, but was completely unable to place the identity of the band and had to Shazam it, and still didn't recognize the band name.

Phew.... well and I don't know. I have all this laying around on a 90's playlist and they were all on the billboard top 10 but I very rarely hear them anymore out there:

Texas - Say What You Want
Fun Lovin' Criminals - Scooby Snacks
Butthole Surfers - Pepper
James - She's A Star
Masterboy - Land Of Dreaming
Queen - Heaven For Everyone
Passengers - Miss Sarajevo
Edwyn Collins - Girl Like You

I guess it depends where you live in. I don't know if any of these are still played in your country home. Maybe they were never popular in your country in the first place. I know 'Drinking in LA' was pretty big everywhere except the US, per example.

Moka, Tuesday, 13 January 2015 06:09 (eleven years ago)

K, hopefully you'll find something in there that you had forgotten about. I have a massive 90's list on my computer, these are a few that I remembered. There's probably more. Some of them are awful I know.

A bit like 'Return of the mac' where we didn't know he'd been here before.

My favorite forgotten 90s hit:

Whale - Hobo Humpin' Slobo Babe

I was weirdly fascinated with this for about 18 months. The video was in heavy rotation on MTV Europe in early 1994, and stood out mightily next to the rest of the playlist (Dylan's "Blood In My Eye" was also big on MTV Europe for some reason).

Later, couldn't find any Whale records in the US until We Care came out (which was shockingly good, and Xgau loved it, iirc). Saw them live in 1998 opening for Tricky, who they blew off the stage.

Holy smokes, I had memory holed this song so hard that I didn't even recognize the artist or title when my friend posted it on facebook just now. Immediately upon hearing the first "hello...(hello)..." the whole of 1997 entered my body like a demonic possession.

Stakka Bo was absolutely everywhere - I found it really irritating and I only listened to commercial radio and it was always on
Kiss the Rain was also everywhere.
Never heard that Peach one yet it sounds exactly like if you mixed up half the stuff in the charts at that time.
Alisha's Attic were also pretty big? Without googling, they also did Alisha Rules the World, er... and many many more (Indestructible! That's it. The Incidental things! In my mind these are categorised as Corrs songs...). They never pop up on those Remember the 90s shows though, so yeah I'm surprised if many people remember them.
Just seen that they also covered 'Still Life' for that Childline album, which I'd never heard despite Suede + covers being my wheelhouse.

kinder, Monday, 17 May 2021 21:00 (four years ago)

Since 'Legend of a Cowgirl' is being evoked itt today, this would be a good time to note that Imani Coppola has made a lot of really good music and a lot of really odd music (often simultaneously) in the intervening years.

Goodnight Moon by Shivaree is one that came into my head a couple of years ago. I'd forgotten all about that one. I feel like it was used on some TV show in the very early 2000s or something.

Also, they weren't quite hits but a friend reminded me of the singer Nut who put out a couple of great singles in 96/7. I hadn't thought about her in such a long time but somehow I knew her singles Brains and Crazy so well. She must have got a decent amount of radio play at the time. Probably some buzz on the ITV Chart Show!

This was huge at the time. A super-catchy posthumous Eurodance remix of a 1985 Freddie Mercury solo song, 'Living On My Own'.

It's a good remix yes - produced by Serge Ramaekers who did a million things, including T-Spoon and New Beat pop stars The Confetti's.

I heard this song at a local supermarket a few months back and was surprised to learn that not only did The Rembrandts have another hit prior to the theme to Friends, but that this one actually managed to chart a little bit higher.

lol I remember that one

Feta Van Cheese (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 19 May 2021 15:10 (four years ago)

it was a decent try at replicating the vibe of "In Your Eyes" - vaguely spiritual lyric, layered "ethnic" percussion, long vampy section with not-quite-comprehensible words, a bass player wearing a trenchcoat

I think Martin Page's "In the House of Stone and Light" is the dave matthews band urtext. At 3:16 in the song (on Spotify anyway), he makes a sound I had heretofore believed could ONLY emanate from Dave Matthews. And he seems to have done it first.

If you value Vox, we have an axe (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 21 May 2021 18:02 (four years ago)

he also had the lesser "hit" (or was it even a hit?) "Keeper of the Flame", which sounds like Sting taking a shit

dave matthews does sound a bit like Sting taking a shit

NFT of snare on "The King of Wishful Thinking" (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 21 May 2021 18:28 (four years ago)

This day in music history

January 9, 1967: a young Gordon Sumner, on holiday with his family, visits South Africa and takes a shit in a Johannesburg railway station. The resultant log grows into David John Matthews.

1982: Sumner (now going by "Sting") writes a song whose early demo is titled "every dump you take."

1985: Matthews moves to Virginia and starts a band, named after himself.

1990: The two musicians pass one another, unknowingly, in the Charlotte, NC airport. But both get a strange frisson at the back of their necks in recognition of their shared connection.

Synchronicity.

Stinkronicity?

Long Tall Arsetee & the Shaker Intros (breastcrawl), Friday, 21 May 2021 19:45 (four years ago)

heh

BTW that album was originally supposed to be straight-ahead one-drop reggae, with the title being Skankronicity.

The label suits (all of whom were Carl Jung superfans) made them change it to Synchronicity.
