The Rough Guide Part 3 (and general redux) - 15 tracks max or one CD only

sorting this page out, breaking down into new categories etc. - hope it will be useful to people. Which ones have you managed to put together so far, if any?

Ultimately the page will detail the duration of every mix, and a link to request a copy of the mix which can then be distributed by someone who has it via yousendit or whatever.

I think we could do a few new ones too although I would strongly recommend either compiling just a maximum of 15 tracks (I think it's a good number for a rough guide, 20 seems a bit too much for an introduction, plus it encourages more thought and discipline in selection) or however many it takes to fill one and one only audio CD, for those who still love CDs.

Huge props to Matos once again for having the idea in the first place.

i ASSUME you haven't yet added to yr site all the Rough Guides on thread #2 yet. either that or you're filtering out my posts harumph.

zebedee (zebedee), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 13:31 (twenty years ago)

Why 15 tracks? Unless you are making a rough guide to prog or electronica, most CDs will easily be able to contain 20 tracks, even more than 30 in the case of pre mid-60s music.

Rough Guide to Bobby Wratten

1. Emma's House
2. Sensitive

7. Landmark

Mind I don't know if this will all fit, but I think I'll give it a shot tonight. My guess is I'll have to do some craetive editing on 10 and 11.

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

or creative, even

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

oh dear, and have one less number 10
and maybe one more number 17

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 14:00 (twenty years ago)

Do please try and make them fit.

zebedee, I never finished updating it no.

And if you're listing more than 15 tracks then try and list the duration, for clarity.

Geir, 15 for reasons stated in original post. If there's room left on the CD after 15 you add more until it's full. If you can't be bothered to work out the duration then leave it at 15. Easy.

The Rough Guide To Orbital

Belfast
The Girl With The Sun In Her Head
Lush 3-1
P.E.T.R.O.L.
I Wish I Had Duck Feet

Way Out
Impact USA - The Earth Is Burning
The Box
Are We Here? (radio edit)
Out There Somewhere 2

Satan
Meltdown
You Lot
Halcyon
Chime

Very tough, wanted something from every album, naturally others would have a different list bar as little as five or six of the absolute essentials, and these aren't my personal 15 favourite Orbital tracks by any means.

$V£N! (blueski), Saturday, 16 April 2005 16:01 (twenty years ago)

Thanks for making that guide. I'm not that familiar with Orbital's work, except only a few tracks.

Rough Guide to Emo (second-wave - 90's mostly)

"Nickel Wound" - Texas is the Reason
"Great Romances of the 20th Century" - Taking Back Sunday
"The Blankets Were the Stairs" - Sunny Day Real Estate
"Watertown Plank" - The Promise Ring
"Sea Foam Green" - Jawbreaker
"Hugs From Boys" - Braid
"Sun Dials" - Alkaline Trio
"Ordinary Life" - Samiam
"Ten Minutes" - Get-Up Kids
"Lucky Denver Mint" - Jimmy Eat World
"Vengeance Factor" - Further Seems Forever
"The Radiator Hums" - Cursive
"Margin Walker" - Fugazi
"Morning New Disease" - Jets to Brazil
"Road to Madrid" - Seam

haven't checked how well this fits on to a disc, but it is 15 tracks. not exactly THE most definitive tracks, but i think it gives a solid overview to the directions "emo" headed throughout the decade, especially the second half.

Actually, what I'm really unhappy about is leaving off stuff like the Jefferson Airplane's "House at Pooneil Corner" and the Animals "It's My Life" and Slade's "Cum On Feel the Noize," all of which I arbitrarily disqualified (along with "Get Off of My Cloud" and "The Real Slim Shady" and "Dirty Diana" and "Fight for Your Right to Party"), and Bob Seger's "2 + 2 = ?" Flipper's "Get Away," Patti Smith's "Piss Factory," and Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit," the four of which barely missed the cut, and the Velvet Underground's "Sister Ray," which is too long (to fit on the CD, that is).

[Unfortunately, some of these tracks I have only on vinyl and cassette.]

The Rough Guide to Happy No Wave

Blinding Headache "Thirteen"
Information "Tempted"
Mofungo "El Salvador"
V-Effect "Must Go"
The Scene Is Now "Finding Someone"
Red Dark Sweet "Di Conti"
Red Dark Sweet "Highway 51 Parts 1 and 2"
The Pillowmakers "12 Varieties of Worms"
Sonic Youth "(She's in a) Bad Mood"

Mofungo "Frederick Douglass"
The Scene Is Now "Kid Ory's Nightmare"
Pussy Galore "Kill Yourself"
Your Mom Too "My Couch"
Sonic Youth "Kotten Krown"
Pussy Galore "Sweet Little Hi-Fi"

These'd probably fit no problem, though I didn't bother to time them, given that I have 0 of them in bytes, making this CD hypothetical. (As a matter of fact, some were never released, some were eaten by my tape player, etc.) Also, if I'd dug out my Bump tape I might have added something by them, or by Live Skull or some other bands who've slipped my mind.

Keren Ann - Not Going Anyway

er, leaving alone the mistake in the album title: that album sounds quite urban (as is her identity in general, what with the whole paris/new york/tel aviv circuit) and not in the least psychedelic. In fact I wonder what "pastoral" is supposed to mean here. Could you explain?

The Rough Guide to Co-Dependent Relationships

Sheryl Crow "The Difficult Kind"
Britney Spears "Toxic"
Sylvers (E.U.) "Turn the Tide"
Lesley Gore "Maybe I Know"
Deana Carter "The Girl You Left Me For"
Sheryl Crow "My Favorite Mistake"
The Rolling Stones "Under My Thumb"
The Beatles "You Really Got a Hold On Me"
The Beatles "You Can't Do That"
The Beatles "Girl"
The Modern Lovers "Hospital"
The Rolling Stones "19th Nervous Breakdown"
Spoonie Gee "Street Girl"
Buzzcocks "Ever Fallen In Love"
The Offspring "Self-Esteem"

One could argue that Smokey Robinson & the Miracles' "You Really Got a Hold On Me" has priority over the Beatles', but I say the latter sounds more codependent.

(Someone with more knowledge than I should do a guide to co-dependent c&w relationships.)

Myonga, you should follow up with a guide to I-vi-ii-V (the pattern that doo-woppers tended to use when they didn't use I-vi-IV-V). "Heart and Soul" to I-vi-IV-V's "Blue Moon," basically.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 22:31 (twenty years ago)

Frank, no "You Keep Me Hanging On" (Supremes)/"You Keep Me Hanging On" (Vanilla Fudge)/"You Keep Me Hanging On" (Kim Wilde) on the co-depedent mix??

xhuxk, Tuesday, 27 September 2005 23:13 (twenty years ago)

No, forgot all about it.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 04:09 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
A quick request...I'm looking for "ambient" or "downtempo" or "instrumtental hip-hop". No vocals or vocal samples please. Something cool (as in, no funny/corny stuff) with a nice rhythm that one might play whilst getting one's hump on.

If someone can help me out, I'd gladly cough up a Rough Guide to 90s Cancon.

Kelly Clarkson's "Addicted" deserves a place on A Rough Guide to Co-Dependent Relationships Vol. 2. Also, if there were to be a Rough Guide to Respiratory Conditions, her album would put forth three strong candidates (a track where she can breathe for the first time, the track that follows where she can't breathe and can't sleep, and the aforementioned "Addicted," where she can't breathe without you inside of her, in fact can't breathe at all).

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 18:38 (twenty years ago)

Frank, do you have Cassette 1 or Tape 1 or whatever it was called? Is that where much of that no wave stuff comes from? I haven't seen those anywhere.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 20:47 (twenty years ago)

Heh heh...I confess that I can't really tell the difference! I'm actually pretty ignorant about that sorta thing & was just bluffing - in fact I'll bet that one or more of my choices ARE I-vi-ii-V. But they all feel like the doo-wop change to me, so whatever. Kinda like that Justice Potter Stewart "I know obscenity when I see it" thing.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 22:57 (twenty years ago)

Dan, I think it was called "Cassette No. 1"; unfortunately, my cassette player ate the tape sometime in the mid '80s, so I'm going on my memory that the Blinding Headache and Information tracks were good ones (those are the two from that tape) ("my memory" meaning that I wrote down in the early '80s that those were the two I should tape for my brother). Why don't you try Rick Brown or Robert Sietsema or one of those guys? (I doubt that I have current addresses for them, but Sietsema should be easy to get ahold of, since he writes for the Voice.) Many of the other obscurities were things that I released myself and at the moment am too broke and busy to re-release. (Myonga, when I first read your Potter quote I saw it as "I know obscurity when I see it"!) One of the Red Dark Sweet tracks was demo tape only.

19. Aly & AJ "Rush"
20. Veronicas "4ever"
21. Lillix "Sweet Temptation"

running time 76:21

("Teen confessional rock" doesn't mean everything is confessional, just that it's by performers who are sort of in that area, or sound like someone else who is. I cut out "Vacation" and "Survivor" and "Leave (Get Out)" and Tik N' Tak's "Don't Turn Back" for not belonging to teen confessional, and Marit Larsen's "Only a Fool" for being too far in the other direction - i.e., she's now singer-songwriter confessional along with the Toris and Fionas and Tunstalls. And I left off some great stuff, e.g., "Get the Party Started" and "Sk8er Boi" and "First," obviously, and (unobviously, but it's great) Lucy Woodward's "Is This Hollywood?" Vanessa Carlton and Michelle Branch are subjects for further research. So is Ashley Parker Angel, I guess, though his single isn't hitting me. Anyway, if you know Brits and boys who belong, let me know. (Not that I'll revise this, but I'd like to know for my pleasure and edification. The boys just don't seem to be getting across.)

but srsly though, something like that is beyond the scope of me-who-has-to-be-in-class-in-10-minutes. would at least have to include

"shoplifting"--the slits
"she is beyond good and evil"--pop group
"damaged goods"--gang of four
"death disco"--Public Image Ltd.

Although I'm sure someone will pick this up between now and tomorrow, I might make a go of it later.

The trouble with actual Rough Guides rather than the fantasi (or homeburning) ones that we post here is that actual Rough Guides will always be devoid of some key tracks for licensing reasons.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 19:05 (nineteen years ago)

not to mention that actual Rough Guides almost never come anywhere near the kinds of music that have been discussed on these threads

lol utah saints!

the table is the table, Thursday, 7 June 2007 20:05 (eighteen years ago)

Severed Heads, yes. Utah Saints, not so much.

I have Sev Heads playlists on iTunes at home. I thought I already did one for here? Oh well, will do it again later.

dan selzer, Thursday, 7 June 2007 20:14 (eighteen years ago)

O I'd really like a Severed Heads RG. I love how d'iPod throws in Joakim's edit of "Dead Eyes Open" on so many shuffle occasions. Works really well on a sunny day in a car with the window down...

willem, Thursday, 7 June 2007 20:22 (eighteen years ago)

okay. i didn't do a search, but i'll look through. otherwise, that would be great. thanks.
aha, yeah, among other things I heard "lost vagueness" today.

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 7 June 2007 20:47 (eighteen years ago)

What is that? I used to like the song but the version on the single is pretty weak. Ditto for "Brainwash" aka "Spilt Milk"

everything, Thursday, 7 June 2007 20:49 (eighteen years ago)

It's from a flexi that came with a fanzine, it was a split with The Legend!, which I have somewhere but can't find it at the moment.

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 7 June 2007 21:05 (eighteen years ago)

Never heard it but would love to.

It's been said before but it's too bad they didn't record and properly release songs like "All Because Of You", "Spilt Milk", "If You Were The Only Girl In The World" etc on a pre-This Is Our Art album. Would have been killer. As it is, they never released a good album.

everything, Thursday, 7 June 2007 21:13 (eighteen years ago)

This was my Severed Heads CD, from only 5 CDs, and I don't think I ever sequenced it. This definitely leans towards the poppier side. There's some stuff that I like from Clifford Darling that I didn't have files for, and I never got into Bad Mood Guy. There's nothing newer than Cuisine on here.

Request to the dance cognoscenti:

I've a vague idea of what Balearic is (aside from an ILX in-joke on the front page) from the much lauded Aeroplane & Studio: Laid-back, moderate tempo synth-disco (I hesitate to use the term electro). And I like it. But as far as I know there's no convenient summation & pointer amongst the Rough Guides for Balearic. Any takers on this genre defining exercise?

Um. Chuck.

I'm not debating that that's a great tracklist, but MUST you advertise it like that? >:-(

Blame The Lex, Kate (if you're in a blaming mood), he made me giggle and the name sorta stuck. I'd hope it's obviously ironic, being that the songs within are 185627656623x better than anything yet produced by the people they spawned.

(Incidentally, the full original twice-the-length Spotify list had several boy tracks but they all necessarily got lost in the cut.)

i didn't realise it would actually be good - "in their dreams" strikes me as a more appropriate title - but tbh i really don't like the idea of a comp w/those artists having anything to do with...the ones you cite in the title. those bitches need to stay away.

xpost: Sopho nearly made the final cut!

Nookie - Pedo Pulls An Essex Sort

I've never heard this; I assume you picked it because it's better than "Devotion"?

meant to be 'Pedro' not 'Pedo' ha. i picked it because its a personal favourite from the time even tho i didn't actually ID it until the mp3 age. you can replace with any other Nookie from the time really (see also Manix).
