I agree that this is amazing.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 01:01 (twenty years ago)

I'm glad I never believed, but this will still not save me.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 01:02 (twenty years ago)

Nobody told me Kath was on the last Green Day album! Can't believe that never came up.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 01:03 (twenty years ago)

So THIS is what that frogs-exploding-in-Germany-thing was about.

latebloomer: But when the monkey die, people gonna cry. (latebloomer), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 01:04 (twenty years ago)

I can't wait to hear this. Seriously. It'll be shockingly good or shockingly bad, no middle ground. You can't beat that sort of entertainment value.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 01:04 (twenty years ago)

kathleen hanna is a total moron.

PARIS HILTON FANS "GET" LETIGRE

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 01:37 (twenty years ago)

I was Paris when Paris wasn't cool.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 01:46 (twenty years ago)

this is the sort of thing the le tigre uh "concept" was compromised by not doing from day one, surely?

tom west (thomp), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 01:47 (twenty years ago)

i think this is pretty cool. surely it'll put an end to the talk of KH being "humorless."

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 01:48 (twenty years ago)

x-post: although okay i'm english and have only a very loose idea of the specific cultural value of a paris hilton, but still

i think "unfunny" is probably closer than "humourless", sadly

tom west (thomp), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 01:49 (twenty years ago)

but not "clueless"

tom west (thomp), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 02:02 (twenty years ago)

well i mean paris hilton is no mandy moore in the feminist sweepstakes but jeez, jess, it's not so bad.

Allyzay do not obtain to make download of yours MP3 (allyzay), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 02:03 (twenty years ago)

haha I was gonna make some comment about LeTigre trying to make their fans take a spoiled socialite reality-TV star seriously as a musical artist but then I remembered how much I love the Kelly Osbourne album.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 02:04 (twenty years ago)

x-post

Camille Paglia likes fun, in as much as I can gather from her writing, so she'd probably dig it.

Jimmy Mod Knows You Eat Your Own Farts (ModJ), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 02:04 (twenty years ago)

"In the 1990s, poetry as performance art revived among young people in slams recalling the hipster clubs of the Beat era. As always, the return of oral tradition had folk roots - in this case the incantatory rhyming of African-American urban hip-hop."

gosh! and golly!

tom west (thomp), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 02:05 (twenty years ago)

maybe Paris Hilton has a delightful personality and her and Kathleen are fantastic friends, who can say!

Allyzay do not obtain to make download of yours MP3 (allyzay), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 02:05 (twenty years ago)

no, no, don't get it twisted, i fall more in the "helluva toboggan ride" camp

strng hlkngtn, Tuesday, 26 April 2005 02:05 (twenty years ago)

strng hlkngtn, Tuesday, 26 April 2005 02:06 (twenty years ago)

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 02:07 (twenty years ago)

and I'm having a hard time imagining Kathleen Hanna being friends wiht people who have delightful personalities.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 02:08 (twenty years ago)

as someone who had camille paglia as a professor, i can assure you, she does not, in fact, like fun

strng hlkngtn, Tuesday, 26 April 2005 02:09 (twenty years ago)

I love "Screwed"! I was looking forward to the album before I got this news. I heard she was having Charlotte Caffey and Anna Waronker write songs for her, so I thought it might be a little like the Josie & the Pussycats album, which I love.

I've gotten pretty tired of the Le Tigre sound, but I guess I'd rather hear Paris sing that sort of song than Kathleen Hannah.

Hi, Jess!

Moosie Grosvenor (Arthur), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 02:10 (twenty years ago)

Caffey and Waronker? Dang, I do want to hear this thing.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 02:10 (twenty years ago)

She really should cover Eartha Kitt's "Where Is My Man?".

Moosie Grosvenor (Arthur), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 02:12 (twenty years ago)

B-b-b-ut she writes with exclamation points! x-post

Jimmy Mod Knows You Eat Your Own Farts (ModJ), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 02:12 (twenty years ago)

is Paris Hilton actually the person picking out collaborators or is there an executive producer putting all these folks together? i'll be kind and not make a guess.

I love "Screwed"! I was looking forward to the album before I got this news. I heard she was having Charlotte Caffey and Anna Waronker write songs for her, so I thought it might be a little like the Josie & the Pussycats album, which I love.

It was influenced by Blondie apparently. It's not that bad, in a computer enhanced to the maxxx kinda way.

is Paris Hilton actually the person picking out collaborators or is there an executive producer putting all these folks together? i'll be kind and not make a guess.

Nope, she's letting Freddie do all the work for her. (Then again I doubt she's interested in her singing career anymore as she's too busy fucking Paris (Yes, her boyfriend's name is Paris) to spawn some plastique babies.)

nathalie in a bar under the sea (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 06:27 (twenty years ago)

(Yes, her boyfriend's name is Paris)

ha if only it had been him in "one night in paris"

i am really excited about this collaboration, i bet it'll kick the ass of ANYTHING from "this island", yeah.

di, Tuesday, 26 April 2005 06:58 (twenty years ago)

There was a Le Tigre interview around the time the new album came out in which they said "Paris Hilton, call us, we have some hot tracks for you", so this isn't too much of a shocker - unless you were dumb enough to think they were being 'ironic' at the time.

Flyboy (Flyboy), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 09:51 (twenty years ago)

"Dude, are you being ironic?"
"I don't even know anymore."

I was a lot more pumped for the PH record before I got this news. I kind of think Paris Hilton is awesome.

adam (adam), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 10:20 (twenty years ago)

working with paris hilton may be the first smart thing le tigre has done since making their self-titled record.

strongo... did you attend the university of the arts as well? camille was one of my profs too. camille would like this collaboration only if it made a serious, passionate artistic statement.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 10:58 (twenty years ago)

She's in touch with the times, then. All hail the New Authenticity!

Flyboy (Flyboy), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 11:54 (twenty years ago)

My thoughts, which occured in the following order:

(1) If they recreate (a term we should use in lieu of "cover" forever and ever) "Party All the Time," I want to see Kathleen do the Rick James hand-raising-hallelujah-we've got it! motion.
(2) I bet a million dollars that anytime someone yells "Paris!" both she and her boyfriend immediately turn and strike a pose in the exact same fashion at the exact same time. (They actually do look as if they could be related, same plastic surgeon I guess.)
(3) I wonder if her boyfriend has a vag he likes to show off whenever there's a camera around too.

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 12:07 (twenty years ago)

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

I'm sure Kathleen Hanna can justify this as a feminst act, somehow.

And I agree it will either be very good or very, very bad. My money is on the latter.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:30 (twenty years ago)

I like Hanna! At least as an singer/entertainer.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:32 (twenty years ago)

kathleen is really charming. i'm a sucker for anyone who says they love my teeth. thats how rainy charmed me too. and paris is enchanting. when shes on tv i cannot look away. this is gonna be good.

how is rainy these days, di?!? we miss her!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 21:07 (twenty years ago)

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 21:08 (twenty years ago)

i miss her too. shes very busy with her new job and i don't get to see her much :-( i ran into her in the supermarket carpark with her boyf the other day, they were going home to eat filo pies. they are a really cute couple.

Such a thing would have to be scored to "Girls."

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 21:13 (twenty years ago)

brian, have i told you lately that i love you?

strng hlkngtn, Tuesday, 26 April 2005 21:18 (twenty years ago)

All my affection for Hannah dried up because of that shit with Mike Watt. What an inarticulate jerk!

Open your eyes; you can fly! (ex machina), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 21:30 (twenty years ago)

eh? what is this shit you speak of... Watt is a lot of things, but inarticulate and jerky he is not.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 26 April 2005 21:31 (twenty years ago)

?

strng hlkngtn, Tuesday, 26 April 2005 21:31 (twenty years ago)

oh that.

Hanna wasn't really being a jerk to Watt on that song. It was all a put-on. Hanna came up with the idea of the phone call, and Watt dug it, so there it is. Sorry for diffusing more drama on that matter.

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

(this is from "heartbeat" on Mike Watt's first solo record.. the end of the song.. for those trying to play along)

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 21:36 (twenty years ago)

dude wrong!!!

Open your eyes; you can fly! (ex machina), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 21:40 (twenty years ago)

Its not the "end of a song". It is a track of Kathleen Hannah leaving a snarky answering machine message for Watt, refusing to participate on the album because someone on it "raped" one of her friends. She comes across very poorly and I can't imagine she'd lie about someone being "raped".

Open your eyes; you can fly! (ex machina), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 21:42 (twenty years ago)

i would like to see paris & nicole team up with le tigre & allison wolfe for "rock and roll nigger".

Dude, email Watt or Hannah. There may be some real elements to her piece (in regards to the accusee in the message), but the fact is: her phone call was staged on the song. Watt said he dug it because it was very "Lydia Lunch"...

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

Yay for the Rainy news! :-D

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 21:57 (twenty years ago)

I imagine the call was staged but I thought it was in poor taste to be so rude to Watt, but I am a white male after all!

I don't think you can expect most listeners to find it staged either.

Open your eyes; you can fly! (ex machina), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 22:04 (twenty years ago)

As a white guy, I was suspicious the first time I heard it, actually. I thought it was real halfway through, but the second half, when things loosen up... especially the whole "all of you old rock guys getting together.. I mean, get over it."... Hannah and Sonic Youth were practically in bed together at the time, and Watt and SY were always bedfellows, so, transitively, the idea of Hannah purposefully leaving an irate message on Watt's answering machine makes little sense.

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 22:08 (twenty years ago)

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 22:23 (twenty years ago)

Donut, yea, but can you really expect everyone to be a huge fanboy?

Of course not. I'm sure many people bought it for the Eddie Vedder cameo alone, and -- assuming they didn't eject the CD by then -- they get to that song and go "WHO THE HELL IS THIS BIZOTCH???"

Hannah's piece was done specifically to throw people off. That's what I liked about it.

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 22:25 (twenty years ago)

Yea, I forgot Vedder was on it. I think I still think it was in poor taste to fictionalize sexual assault in the name of fucking with meathead grungers.

Open your eyes; you can fly! (ex machina), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 22:27 (twenty years ago)

I don't think the sexual assault part was fiction! And why the hell not fuck with meathead grungers on the topic of sexual assault?

(That said, I don't think the album really attracted that many meathead grungers, anyway.)

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 22:29 (twenty years ago)

Because she makes me think that she is an inarticulate jerk with no sense of perspective?

i.e., this is why i haven't heard of this incident till now, PRECISELY b/c i woulda ejected the CD immediately right after eddie vedder started bloviating on "against the 70s."

Well, if you think she's inarticulate, I can't argue with that, since it's just opinion. But if you think the stories/poems she told of her being sexually abused by her older brother when she was younger are fiction, then sure, you could argue she has no perspective, too.

Should I be expected to know this a casual music listener? Or does her "artistic statment" serve to further alienate feminism from traditional male rock culture rather than fostering at atomsphere of inclusiveness?

Open your eyes; you can fly! (ex machina), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 03:03 (twenty years ago)

*rolls eyes*

di, Wednesday, 27 April 2005 06:43 (twenty years ago)

Should I be expected to know this a casual music listener? Or does her "artistic statment" serve to further alienate feminism from traditional male rock culture rather than fostering at atomsphere of inclusiveness?

Haha, I think Hannah has forgotten altogether about inclusiveness.
As if inclusiveness is a musical given anyway.

And who gives a fuck if casual listeners don't know about her history? You earlier claimed she delivered her lines on that Watt song with "no perspective". I'm just saying there's possible evidence she has perspective.. CLEAR perspective from sexual abuse, no less. But you'll have to ask Kathleen if she's a liar or not yourself, Jon.

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 07:55 (twenty years ago)

So there's two cases:

1) She is actually a huge asshole
2) She is making a tasteless artistic statement that makes her look like an asshole, therefore she is an asshole.

Too bad, I like Bikini Kill and Le Tigre. (My favorite of the grrrrrl stuff is Team Dresch though.)

I am friends with a relative of Adam H@@@@@@@@@ so maybe I should ask her about this.

Open your eyes; you can fly! (ex machina), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 13:09 (twenty years ago)

1) She is actually a huge asshole
2) She is making a tasteless artistic statement that makes her look like an asshole, therefore she is an asshole.

"She is an asshole" and "She is making a tasteless artistic statement" are your opinion, so I can't argue with that. Although "Being an asshole because of making a tasteless artistic statement" is really a can of worms you want to open? That would make a lot of experimental/noise artists "assholes" by proxy, because a lot of people consider their music "tasteless" just because it's noise. That's quite a general damning clause there.

But you go and ask Kathleen, Jon. You go! (I'll say I met Kathleen once, and she was quite pleasant. Tobi was great, as was the guitarist, Billy.. this was after a Bikini Kill show at UC Irvine in 1993 or so...)

Paris Hilton Promotes FatBoy Slim Single
fatboy_paris.jpg
Drowing? That's Hot

British musician FatBoy Slim (Norman Cook) has released a new single, a new video and has grabbed Paris Hilton to promote it. Well, sort of. She appears in some footage, shot by Cook in LA, which which won't be seen in the final cut but is being used in a viral video, developed an seeded by ASABAILEY, to promote the release of the video which debuts on MTV this week.

The viral clip shows Hilton and two others, watching a man eat a chicken leg only to later drown to death in a swimming pool. She stands there like good old fashioned eye candy while poor guy drowns. Then, with her couldn't care less flair, she dials 911.

MTV has agreed to air the full-length video (see it here) only after 9pm; the video has racial and violent undertones, as it tells the story of a day in the life of an American racist and how his racism, ultimately, kills him.

According to Baily, the campaign has sparked comments from a number of minority group organizations, saying the video is exploiting racial issues to simply promote Fatboy Slim and it mocks the sensitive issue of racism. All advertising exploits something, right? Besides, the guy gets his due in the end.

Paris Hilton's first single: 'Stars are Blind'

Associated Press
May. 30, 2006 07:58 AM

HONG KONG - Paris Hilton says her upcoming album will be a mix of reggae, pop and hip-hop, with the first single being a reggae song called "Stars Are Blind."

Hilton also will remake Rod Stewart's "Do You Think I'm Sexy," she said in an interview in the June issue of Hong Kong magazine Prestige.

"The whole album has so much different music on it. I like all music. It's not like I only like pop or only rock. I want to have something for everybody," Hilton was quoted as saying.

Hilton said she wrote the lyrics to seven of her songs. The magazine didn't say how many songs are on the album.

She said she had to overcome shyness to become a singer.

"I have always had a voice and always known I could sing, but I was too shy to let it come out," Hilton was quoted as saying. "When I finally let go and did it, I realized it is what I am most talented at and what I love to do the most."

Prestige said the single, "Stars Are Blind," will be released this month by Warner Records and her own label Heiress Records, followed by a full album later this year.
