The New Pornographers - Twin Cinema

So, I just heard the song "twin cinema" this morning. I'd say it's a pretty solid NP song, nothing spectacular, though I imagine it'll probably be stuck in my head on and off for the rest of the day. Any other thoughts?

jedidiah (jedidiah), Friday, 29 April 2005 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I love this song. Much better than I expected. I thought Electric Version was far inferior to Mass Romantic, so this gives me hope.

They've got to get more Neko songs on there...there wasn't enough of her on EV, which was the biggest problem with that record.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Friday, 29 April 2005 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Where did you hear it?? I can't wait for this disc...!!!

On a Strict El Cholo Diet (Bent Over at the Arclight), Friday, 29 April 2005 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I love the song. It's not quite on par with "The Laws Have Changed" or "Letter From An Occupant," but certainly among their best material. It didn't full click for me until the third time I heard it.

I'm super excited about the album, it should be a lot of fun.

The mp3 is right here.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Friday, 29 April 2005 13:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm looking forward to hearing the album as well, at five or so months it's going to be a long wait though.

Is this supposed to be the first single?

jedidiah (jedidiah), Friday, 29 April 2005 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Very psyched for this record.

57 7th (calstars), Friday, 29 April 2005 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, it took me a while to get into "Laws" when they released that in advance of Electric Version, but by the time the album came out, I was super excited.

Eppy (Eppy), Friday, 29 April 2005 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Can't wait. I still haven't heard Mass Romantic, but adored Electric Version. "Miss Teen Wordpower" is the best power-pop song I've heard in years.

mike a, Friday, 29 April 2005 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm psyched that they're playing the chameleon club - see lakini's juice C/D for details.

blackmail.is.my.life (blackmail.is.my.life), Friday, 29 April 2005 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow. That sounds great. It may be their best non-Neko song.

Not Thaat Chuck, Friday, 29 April 2005 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

The write-up on Matador says that some of the songs are like Jesus Christ Superstar. If that's even halfway true, that's amazingly good news.

There's another song on the record that's a sequel to "Jackie" from Mass Romantic!

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Friday, 29 April 2005 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm excited for the record, but this song is *not* a killer NP single. A decent album track sure, but I'm hoping they're saving the really good stuff.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 29 April 2005 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't listened to the single, but hope Bejar pops in for some songs.

WillS, Saturday, 30 April 2005 03:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Bejar has at least one song, probably two or three. Apparently there are two other new female singers on this album as well.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Saturday, 30 April 2005 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Seriously, this record can't leak quickly enough! I'm having so much fun with "Twin Cinema" and just keep hoping for another new song every time it ends.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Saturday, 30 April 2005 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh man, this track is great. I can't wait to get the rest of this CD. Who says MP3s don't sell records?

mike a, Saturday, 30 April 2005 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry, true believers, but this tune is not catchy at all.

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Sunday, 1 May 2005 04:21 (twenty-one years ago)

What is the opposite of OTM? Because that's what Roger is right now.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Sunday, 1 May 2005 06:12 (twenty-one years ago)

strangely, it'd be the same, partner: OTM. The word 'on' and the word 'off' both begin with 'O.'

You mean OHC - Off his cracker. And no, I'm not. Not about this.

(sorry e'rbody i'm wasted)

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Sunday, 1 May 2005 06:33 (twenty-one years ago)

OFF HIS ROCKER

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Sunday, 1 May 2005 09:29 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
somebody please post when this album leaks through piracy, i am looking forward.

aaronspelling?, Friday, 17 June 2005 18:39 (twenty years ago)

Yesterday.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 17 June 2005 18:49 (twenty years ago)

Oh my lord, what are the chances, you just blew my mind. THANKS

aaronspelling?, Friday, 17 June 2005 23:14 (twenty years ago)

'Jackie, Dressed In Cobras' sounds so much like Sparks. This is a good thing.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Saturday, 18 June 2005 09:20 (twenty years ago)

Oh boy do I love "The Bleeding Heart Show".

Sean M (Sean M), Saturday, 18 June 2005 10:07 (twenty years ago)

The great thing about this album so far is everyone seems to have a different favourite track.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Saturday, 18 June 2005 10:57 (twenty years ago)

I thought Electric Version was far inferior to Mass Romantic, so this gives me hope.

You were right. Electric Version was so inferior, it affected my opinion of the band completely to the point where I don't even like Mass Romantic anymore. It highlighted what was bad and gimmicky about the band. This new mp3 sounds like lack of progression.

Cutesy Quirky, Saturday, 18 June 2005 11:27 (twenty years ago)

To me all their albums sound the same - wallopping, joyous, slightly skewed organ harmony sourpop. I don't really understand how EV could be heard as significantly different (pro or con) from MR. And ditto for the new one. It's the same stuff!

Sean M (Sean M), Saturday, 18 June 2005 11:29 (twenty years ago)

it's all about the summer jamz. it doesn't *need* to be terribly different.

knocknock, Saturday, 18 June 2005 18:29 (twenty years ago)

Sean M OTM

Hunter (Hunter), Sunday, 19 June 2005 02:38 (twenty years ago)

Said it on the other thread but this is just a great record. Very high energy and hooks galore. It's easily their most consistently enjoyable album. That said, there's no single track that's quite as good as "Letter from an Occupant" or "The Laws Have Changed," but it's hardly disappointing.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Sunday, 19 June 2005 02:52 (twenty years ago)

The melodies on Electric Version still sound much more difficult to me, more complicated and tangled, and not as immediate. My second time through Mass Romantic (and The Slow Wonder), I already felt a strong familiarity with every track; some tracks on Electric Version took three listens just to gain perspective on where they were about to go after each measure. I personally didn't feel as familiar with it until maybe the fourth or fifth listen, and I was never as taken with it as I was by the first album. The new one seems like a pleasant middle-ground. Not as much power-pop throttle as MR, not as many twists/turns as EV.

Ryan Pitchfork, Sunday, 19 June 2005 03:01 (twenty years ago)

Boy I think Slow Wonder is meh. Songs are ok, I think maybe it's --dunno, maybe the arrangements lack the manic overwrought glee of NP.

Hunter (Hunter), Sunday, 19 June 2005 03:04 (twenty years ago)

It is definitely a bit headier, but I think the energy level comes very close to the best NPs stuff at times-- esp. on "The Town Halo". The songwriting is also super focused, and for my money, has much more direction than most of EV, if not quite the spirit.

Ryan Pitchfork, Sunday, 19 June 2005 03:18 (twenty years ago)

The Neko songs sound like Broadcast!

David R. (popshots75`), Sunday, 19 June 2005 03:21 (twenty years ago)

I'm obsessing over "Use It."

Douglas (Douglas), Sunday, 19 June 2005 05:51 (twenty years ago)

I'm obsessing over just about every song... even Bejar's songs.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Sunday, 19 June 2005 06:02 (twenty years ago)

Ugh. I didn't think it could be more sludgy and less engaging than Electric Version, but this is just painful. EV at least had 'Miss Teen Wordpower'. What happened to the band that did 'Letter From An Occupant', 'Your Daddy Don't Know', 'Breakin The Law' and 'The Body Says No'?

minolta (minolta), Sunday, 19 June 2005 22:21 (twenty years ago)

Share, pls.

Jimmy Mod Is Great At Getting Us Into Trouble (ModJ), Sunday, 19 June 2005 22:25 (twenty years ago)

I don't know how anyone could consider Electric Version "sludgy." I downloaded Twin Cinema and put it on my ipod. Monday at work won't be quite as painful as usual, I'm sure.

nickn (nickn), Monday, 20 June 2005 05:58 (twenty years ago)

I really don't see how going from any one NP album to another could be "painful"! Could you elaborate on what you don't like about it?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 20 June 2005 06:23 (twenty years ago)

What happened to the band that did 'Letter From An Occupant', 'Your Daddy Don't Know', 'Breakin The Law' and 'The Body Says No'?

Hah, this is like a list of my least liked NP songs. And my favorites are more like The Fake Headlines, It's Only Divine Right, and From Blown Speakers, which I guess are kinda sludgier.

Hunter (Hunter), Monday, 20 June 2005 07:00 (twenty years ago)

I've posted a track over at Said the Gramophone.

Sean M (Sean M), Monday, 20 June 2005 07:33 (twenty years ago)

I felt like this record was a little lacking after the Electric Version... but then, I've had it on repeat solidly for two days. I was going to mention my favourite tracks, but that's like the track listing, now. Lets just say from... "Twin Cinema" to "Sing me Spanish Techno". It's just I can't remember the track names after that. Except "Stacked, Crooked".

The Jessica Numbers! The Bleeding Heart Show! Cor!

Hello, it's Summer!

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Monday, 20 June 2005 09:09 (twenty years ago)

Ryan P'fork OTM in his first post re: Mass Romantic beating listeners over the head (in a good way), though I don't know about EV having that many twists and turns. Whenever I played it (which, for a couple months, was almost every other day) (yeah boy), it seems like every track is its own discrete unit, and it just so happens that they're all on the same album. "Hey, kids, it's a Carl Newman exclusive!" *three minutes of boingy-boing* *five seconds of silence* "Hey, kids, it's a..." Twin Cinema definitely has more flow.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 20 June 2005 11:46 (twenty years ago)

I really don't see how going from any one NP album to another could be "painful"! Could you elaborate on what you don't like about it?

You misunderstood me, I hadn't played it yet and I was saying work (usually painful, esp. on a Monday) will be better with some new NP to listen to. Still haven't played it, I had forgotten I put it on my pod. I'll fix that right now.

nickn (nickn), Monday, 20 June 2005 16:55 (twenty years ago)

Nick, I was not referring to your statement, but rather to minolta's!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 20 June 2005 17:01 (twenty years ago)

Was specifically referencing this:

Ugh. I didn't think it could be more sludgy and less engaging than Electric Version, but this is just painful.

Sorry for the confusion.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 20 June 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

Haha, OK, I used "painful" too so I assumed you meant me. I couldn't get beyond "sludgy" in minolta's post.

nickn (nickn), Monday, 20 June 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

I am really loving this. There's something very 'paisley underground' about the whole thing (The Three O'Clock specifically).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 23 June 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

I'm liking it, but not as much as Mass Romantic. Possibly more than Electric Version, not quite sure.

They buried the best song, Star Bodies, at track 12. Weird.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Thursday, 23 June 2005 20:16 (twenty years ago)

Nice enough song, but it's odd to end the album with the mid-level energy "Stacked Crooked." Neither bang nor whimper...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 23 June 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

"Star Bodies" may be the best song. After two plays of the album I'm liking it quite a lot, though it didn't grab me immediately like EV did. I still haven't heard Mass Romantic except for the title song.

nickn (nickn), Thursday, 23 June 2005 21:39 (twenty years ago)

Wow. I've been listening to it on repeat for days now. It's possibly their best and most consistent album. Without a doubt, one of the contenders for album of this year.
And...Dan Bejar is a musical genius! Jackie Dressed in Cobras! The Jessica Numbers!!!
This man can do no wrong. I don't know what AC would do without him.

marybeth, Friday, 24 June 2005 03:14 (twenty years ago)

I have to admit that the first time I heard this I was really, really disappointed. I wasn't expecting them to get all mature and understated like this. But after listening to it for a week or so I think it's pretty freaking awesome now. I think I was most disappointed initially in the lack of energy, at least compared to the first two albums, but it seems like they more than make up for it with just downright gorgeous songs. The part in Sing Me Spanish Techno that starts "traveling at (?) speed over the hills and trails" absolutely floors me. This is a stunning album.

jedidiah (jedidiah), Friday, 24 June 2005 14:55 (twenty years ago)

Bleeding Heart Show is breathtaking. AC Newman is possibly the worst album sequencer in the history of music. Either that or it's some Canadian thing I don't get.

Jimmy Mod Is Great At Getting Us Into Trouble (ModJ), Friday, 24 June 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

I'm seeing them tonite...in Lancaster, PA! I think this is way better than EV, that Dan Bejar's contributions are more congruous with the rest of the album, and that Neko's voice is well produced on this record.

Star Bodies is awesome!

blackmail.is.my.life (blackmail.is.my.life), Friday, 24 June 2005 15:27 (twenty years ago)

Newman IS a poor album sequencer. That's why their albums annoy as much as they thrill me. He seems unaware that his vacuum-packaged sugar-cookies give one a headache when you eat too much of them.

Ever tried parsing a NP lyric? For a while I thought they were clever until I printed them out. I just really, really wish Neko Case sung every song; she's like Alison Moyet singing lyrics written by Neil Tennant.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Friday, 24 June 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

That's what Neko albums are for, dood.

Jimmy Mod Is Great At Getting Us Into Trouble (ModJ), Friday, 24 June 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

I've only found threes tracks online so far. LOVE "Use It". How many, if any, songs does Neko sing lead on? It bugs me that she only sings country when solo. For the love of God, Neko, I'm begging you... SING MORE POP!

darin (darin), Friday, 24 June 2005 15:39 (twenty years ago)

Ah, see, but Neko's boring solo. There's the rub.

(xpost)

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Friday, 24 June 2005 16:00 (twenty years ago)

bullshit

Gear! (Ill Cajun Gunsmith) (Gear!), Friday, 24 June 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

i half expect someone to sing "got to get you into my life" on "Use It."

blackmail.is.my.life (blackmail.is.my.life), Friday, 24 June 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

I call bullshit on Alfred too.

Jimmy Mod Is Great At Getting Us Into Trouble (ModJ), Friday, 24 June 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

yeah, get two ears, for reals.

Gear! (Ill Cajun Gunsmith) (Gear!), Friday, 24 June 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

I have no problem with the album sequencing of any of the three New Pornographers albums and I'm super anal and critical about that sort of thing. All three frontload most of the best material and keep some gems set aside for side b. What the hell is wrong with that? My only real complaint about the tracklisting for Twin Cinema is that they maybe should have cut a couple songs (I would ditch "Broken Breads" and "Stacked Crooked.")

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Friday, 24 June 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

It actually totally blows my mind that anyone would think that The Electric Version is not their best record, or that it's songs are at all difficult. I mean, for real, Twin Cinema is the tricky one - I had to listen to it several times over just to get into it at all, whereas Electric Version set my brain on fire immediately. And fuck, "The Laws Have Changed" is on The Electric Version. That's the best power pop song of the past twenty years!

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Friday, 24 June 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

And christ, beating you over the head with hooks is the entire point of the band - if you're not comfortable with that, there's a fucking legion of shitty indie rock bands out there just waiting for you, and The Shins will probably save your life.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Friday, 24 June 2005 17:13 (twenty years ago)

x-post

Except you forgot Letter to An Occupant

Jimmy Mod Is Great At Getting Us Into Trouble (ModJ), Friday, 24 June 2005 17:13 (twenty years ago)

I'd rather hear Neko in a power-pop context than a faux-country one.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Friday, 24 June 2005 17:14 (twenty years ago)

It's not faux country?

Jimmy Mod Is Great At Getting Us Into Trouble (ModJ), Friday, 24 June 2005 17:15 (twenty years ago)

I vastly prefer NP to The Shins. Hell, I love the NP! "The Laws Have Changed" is one of my very favorite songs of the last three years; but, sheeh, nothing wrong with admitting that a little of them goes a long way.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Friday, 24 June 2005 17:15 (twenty years ago)

my favorite NP tune is "Slow Descent Into Alcoholism", followed closely by "The Laws Have Changed" and "Mass Romantic"

despite what christgau and his followers think, Neko's better as a solo lead than as a backup singer in the NP.

Gear! (Ill Cajun Gunsmith) (Gear!), Friday, 24 June 2005 17:16 (twenty years ago)

i agree with alfred. i'm not crazy about her solo work myself. this in no way lessens her iconic performer status. when i see the new pornos perform, or listen to their records, i think that they may be the most fully realized "supergroup" to ever perform! the canadian invasion is how many years old now?

blackmail.is.my.life (blackmail.is.my.life), Friday, 24 June 2005 17:16 (twenty years ago)

OPO Mass Romantic: Letter From An Occupant

OPO Electric Version: Ballad Of A Comeback Kid

OPO Twin Cinema: Star Bodies

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Friday, 24 June 2005 17:18 (twenty years ago)

OPO: Centre for the Holy Wars
OPO: It's Only Divine Right
OPO: Falling Through Your Clothes

OPO Mass Romantic: Slow Descent Into Alcoholism
OPO Electric Version: The Laws Have Changed
OPO Twin Cinema: Too many great ones to pick from. Today, maybe "Three Or Four"

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 24 June 2005 17:27 (twenty years ago)

OPO Mass Romantic: "Letter From An Occupant" ("Slow Descent..." is a close second)
OPO Electric Version: "The Laws Have Changed"
OPO Twin Cinema: "Twin Cinema"

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Friday, 24 June 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

my 2nd choices are: To Wild Homes, Miss Teen Wordpower, and The Bleeding Heart Show (I think)

blackmail.is.my.life (blackmail.is.my.life), Friday, 24 June 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

(from the minds of) Minolta OTM. This may be my least favorite of their records so far.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 24 June 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

You and minolta obviously are under the misconception that you like music.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 24 June 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)

"Sing Me Spanish Techno" would be so much better if Carl sang the "listening too long to one song/sing me Spanish techno" part and Neko sang lead on the rest of it. It's still really good, though.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Friday, 24 June 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

I'm just not that into "Bleeding Heart Show." I think it's okay, but kinda corny.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Friday, 24 June 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

OPO Mass Romantic: "Letter From An Occupant"
OPO Electric Version: "From Blown Speakers"
OPO Twin Cinema: "The Bones Of An Idol"

Billy Pilgrim (Billy Pilgrim), Friday, 24 June 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

OPO non-album NP track: "When I Was a Baby" (!!!!!)

Douglas (Douglas), Friday, 24 June 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

Never heard 'When I Was a Baby'. What period is it from? I'm sure it's great

Billy Pilgrim (Billy Pilgrim), Friday, 24 June 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

My favorite non-album song is "Your Daddy Don't Know," a Neko-song cover of some obscure Canadian hit.

That and When I Was A Baby are both floating around out there, both worth hearing.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Friday, 24 June 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

Neko-sung, sorry

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Friday, 24 June 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

I think "Twin Cinema" (the song) would be way better if it was 1:20.

Sean M (Sean M), Friday, 24 June 2005 19:02 (twenty years ago)

Johnny Fever Knows It All

It’s also possible that we have vastly differing opinions on what constitutes “good music.” No need to be a jerk.

The title track is the only song I really like here.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 24 June 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

I should add that while I thought the first album was fabulous, EV was less so, TC less than EV. The Slow Wonder = better than EV, not as good as MR.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 24 June 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

Can someones YSI the song called "Your Daddy Don't Know" pls. k. thnks, etc.

Jimmy Mod Is Sick of Being The Best At Everything (ModJ), Friday, 24 June 2005 19:15 (twenty years ago)

No need to be a jerk.

I'm only that way with old friend, punkin.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 24 June 2005 19:25 (twenty years ago)

Ha, I think "Twin Cinema" would be better if it lasted forever, extending its pop bliss throughout all enternity.

"When I Was A Baby" was the b-side of "Letter From An Occupant." It's a Donner Party song.

"Your Daddy Don't Know" is on the FUBAR soundtrack. It's a song by the band Toronto.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Friday, 24 June 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

I think my favorite non-album NP song is "Graceland," which is an original from the recent Matador At 15 comp. I wish they had saved it for the album.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Friday, 24 June 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)

"Your Daddy Don't Know"

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Friday, 24 June 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

"When I was a Baby" is pretty easily found on the internets. Thanks for the tip.

Billy Pilgrim (Billy Pilgrim), Friday, 24 June 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

OMG That song is AWESOME

Jimmy Mod Is Sick of Being The Best At Everything (ModJ), Saturday, 25 June 2005 00:53 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I have to keep myself from listening to "Your Daddy Don't Know" cos it usually gets stuck in my head for a week or so, and that can get a little annoying, great as it is.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Saturday, 25 June 2005 13:13 (twenty years ago)

The show was great last night in Lancaster. Neko wasn't with them and Carl's niece very capably handled additional keyboards and vocals.

blackmail.is.my.life (blackmail.is.my.life), Saturday, 25 June 2005 13:15 (twenty years ago)

Which new songs did they play?

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Saturday, 25 June 2005 13:16 (twenty years ago)

Well, anyway, if anyone was interested in what was played in Brooklyn, here's the setlist:

It's Only Divine Right / Graceland / Use It / From Blown Speakers / The Bleeding Heart Show / Jackie / Mass Romantic / The Electric Version / Testament To Youth In Verse / Star Bodies / The Laws Have Changed / Sing Me Spanish Techno / The Body Says No / Twin Cinema / The Fake Headlines / All For Swinging You Around / Slow Descent Into Alcoholism / Letter From An Occupant

No encore, they were running out of time and had to rush to get the last two out, because it just wouldn't be a New Pornographers show without them.

It was a pretty good show, but in the context of the other NP shows I've seen, certainly the weakest I've been to in spite of a pretty solid setlist. Catherine Calder did a pretty good job filling in for Neko - she has an amazingly similar voice, but she's really young and lacks the power and presence of Neko Case. With a bit more confidence and experience, I think she'll really end up being great someday. She did really well on "Mass Romantic" and "All For Swinging You Around," though I don't think she has enough authority in her voice to nail Neko's parts on "The Laws Have Changed."

The sound mix was weak and the PA wasn't very loud, and that diminished things somewhat. The new songs seemed underrehearsed and "Twin Cinema," awesome as it was, lacked a lot of the oomph that makes it so great on the album. Ditto "Use It." "Sing Me Spanish Techno" is the exception, that one actually sounded better live.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Sunday, 26 June 2005 04:54 (twenty years ago)

I always thought Mystery Hours sounded Waaaaaaaaaay better live...

(always=since I heard it live)

Jimmy Mod Is Sick of Being The Best At Everything (ModJ), Sunday, 26 June 2005 09:32 (twenty years ago)

"Sing Me Spanish Techno" is the exception, that one actually sounded better live.

But did it sound any less like "Graceland"?

rogermexico (rogermexico), Monday, 27 June 2005 20:38 (twenty years ago)

One of my favorite New Pornographers songs isn't even technically by them. On the first Neko Case album, she does a duet with Carl Newman on the Everly Brothers "Bowling Green"

If you love the New Pornographers and haven't heard Bowling Green, you're in for a treat.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 14:14 (twenty years ago)

no harm done, paul.

Wow, kornrulez6969, I didn't even know about that! Can somebody YSI it?

On a Strict El Cholo Diet (Bent Over at the Arclight), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 19:54 (twenty years ago)

the song i'm obsessing over on the new album is "these are the fables," on which neko sounds more like a '60s british chanteuse than she ever has before, on which carl either steals an obscure fairport convention melody or makes up one they forgot to write, and on which the ghost of robert pollard (channeled here by carl) phones in some leftover lyrics from a haiku he wrote in 12th grade. it's the most beautiful thing i've heard this year, and quite unlike anything else in the NPs' bag of tricks.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 04:02 (twenty years ago)

I agree with Fact Checking Cuz - that song just keeps getting better for me, and I think it's a particularly brilliant usage of Neko Case. "Bones of an Idol" comes close, but I get more of an Andrew Lloyd Weber vibe from that song for some reason.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 11:27 (twenty years ago)

er, this "Your Daddy Don't Know"... basically "Jessie's Girl" thrown together with some other 80s stuff, no?

one month passes...
It's great being the only Luddite geezer on da board who has to wait til the street date to hear albums. ($9.99 Best Buy)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

hahaha, amen, i was just about to head over to best buy.

poortheatre (poortheatre), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

the cover is SO BAD!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

Once again, I've found one song I really, really like (the title song) and then the rest, well...

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

For anyone going to Best Buy, at my local one the price was $13.99. The manager just happened to be standing right directly there next to the CD, so I picked him up and told him, "um, on the webpage this is $9.99?" He said he'd go look into it, walked back and said, "well, it is $13.99 (even though the webpage clearly has it at 10 bucks) but I took care of it for you." Then when the cashier rung it up, she did something where she rings it up under the "competitors" price (bestbuy.com is a competitor?). So yeah, if anyone actually cares, try that at yours too if they are overpricing it.

Mickey (modestmickey), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 17:37 (twenty years ago)

the cover is SO BAD!!

-- s1ocki (slytus...) (webmail), August 23rd, 2005. (slutsky)

Agreed. What the hell is that shit? I remember seeing a picture of an old TNP CD (never heard them before) and the cover was beautiful. What happened?

Mickey (modestmickey), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 17:40 (twenty years ago)

No time for garage sales!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 17:45 (twenty years ago)

I can't imagine the last time I looked at a CD cover for more than 3 seconds.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)

The first paragraph of Rob Mitchum's Twin Cinemas review on Pitchfork was weird. I mean, first of all, it suggests a fairly limited understanding of what power pop is, and secondly, are there really power pop bands making tons of money churning out the same song over and over again? Unbeknownst to me, are Alex Chilton and Eric Carmen currently living in neighboring mansions?

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

Maybe he's thinking of Sum41?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

Dr. Morbius, have you seen the new Animal Collective album art? Its worth a bit more then 3 seconds.

jmeister (jmeister), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

i... like art.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

Carney!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

the last one was pretty bad too... not this bad though!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

(big x-post to Mickey)

Yeah, the Best Buy around my pulls that shit quite often, even when the advertised price is in the weekly circular in stacks at the front of the store! So I've taken to grabbing one of those when I walk in so I can flash it at the cashier when I'm given the inevitable trouble. But when they have those $9.99 sales they rarley price them as such since they jump up to regular price within a week.

jonviachicago, Tuesday, 23 August 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

Mine was 9.99 w/ no prob at the register (and it was stickered 13.99).

Why bother putting good art on a CD sleeve? One step beyond postage stamp.

After "Sung Tongs" I don't plan on getting within 10 feet of another Animal Collective album.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 18:49 (twenty years ago)

i wonder what price mom-n'-pops are selling this cd for.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

just got it todya and listened to it twice. don't have much use for anything yet besides "Falling Through Your Clothes" and "Streets of Fire," but I'll keep it up.

poortheatre (poortheatre), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 23:14 (twenty years ago)

12,99 at R0x in Yr Head, stencil. Did other people get the one-sided promo single?

k/l (Ken L), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 23:32 (twenty years ago)

i dunno if the big chains have the promo single, i can't remember if it was a special matador direct-only deal. i do remember that we shipped a SHITLOAD of 'em, tho.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 23:36 (twenty years ago)

does the booklet contain the lyrics?

bill neil (inabillity), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 23:39 (twenty years ago)

Bill - just buy it. It's ten bucks at Best Buy, for Christ's sake. You can spare ten bucks.

Christian, Tuesday, 23 August 2005 23:43 (twenty years ago)

Is this album a grower? I love "Use It" and the title track, but that's about it, from first listen.

Bobby Bloo, Tuesday, 23 August 2005 23:47 (twenty years ago)

I'm planning on it either way - I was just hoping for clarification on some of the lines.

bill neil (inabillity), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 00:03 (twenty years ago)

i'm going to get this at lunchtime today i hope. i can't wait! i'm another luddite so i haven't heard it yet.

gem (trisk), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 00:05 (twenty years ago)

My favorite album of 2005.

M. V. (M.V.), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 02:41 (twenty years ago)

same

brokenfuses (brokenfuses), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 03:04 (twenty years ago)

bill neil, if you're talking about Twin Cinema - no. No lyrics. The book is pretty much as bad as the cover art.

Mickey (modestmickey), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 03:06 (twenty years ago)

Picked this up today at Worst Buy for 10 bucks. Only one spin so far but first impression is Meh. It is getting great reviews so hopefully it will be a grower.

Jim Reckling (Jim Reckling), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

And christ, beating you over the head with hooks is the entire point of the band - if you're not comfortable with that, there's a fucking legion of shitty indie rock bands out there just waiting for you, and The Shins will probably save your life.

haha I know the Shins are thee living embodiement of all musikal evil on ILM, but they DO have hooks, ya know?

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

the Shins are thee living embodiement of all musikal evil

are they? Damn Garden Prostate. Damn OC.

poortheatre (poortheatre), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

Jim, all the NP albums have been growers for me so maybe it will work that way for you too. Usually it takes me time to get used to all of it. After awhile I start to hear the little things that they do so great. First couple of spins it seems that they try to jam too many catchy hooks , melodies and bridges into the songs and album as a whole but after a while they parse out for me and make sense togteher and dont seem forced. I just attribute it to them to being on a different plane then everyone else making guitar oriented pop now. They seem to have it down to a science and it takes me a hwile to see the equation. Wow that sounds contrived but order starts emeging from the chaos after a bit for me. I think I just wrote the same thing three times.

jmeister (jmeister), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 23:38 (twenty years ago)

Free instore at Amoeba SF tonight...

Wednesday - August 24th - 7:00 pm
The New Pornographers

Do not miss this supergroup of pop perfectionists, starring John Collins, Kurt Dahle, Todd Fancey, Carl Newman & Blaine Thurier. Note: Neko Case & Dan Bejar will not be able to attend the instore.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 23:42 (twenty years ago)

It bothers me that my favorite song on the album has the dorkiest lyrics. "Sing Me Spanish Techno"?? Really, I don't care what their rationale is for that line - I assume it's the retarded narrator qualifier - it ruins what would be a classic NP powerhouse stomper by being THE CHORUS for chrissake! I'd like to see somebody doctor the recording to replace it with a line that might be equally nonsensical but at least somewhat more palatable: "Bring Me Danish Rainbow", "Ring Me Mannish Hedgerow", anything.

Curt (cgould), Friday, 26 August 2005 18:43 (twenty years ago)

neko and dan aren't on the instore tour, but will be on the regular tour later this fall.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 26 August 2005 18:47 (twenty years ago)

i can't stop listening to this album now. it grew on me fast bc i wasn't super impressed after the first listen. but now i can't get the melodies out of my head. like the slidding guitar notes on bones of an idol.
this cd is radical.

kyle farmer, Friday, 26 August 2005 21:23 (twenty years ago)

"ring me hamish kilgour" woulda been pretty great.

tomorrow's friend prolly has a song called that.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 26 August 2005 21:33 (twenty years ago)

Thanks to this thread I downleaded "When I Was a Baby" free off Matador. I like it better than TC by far, it's wonderful.

I alread did

I already did.

I never her!

k/l (Ken L), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 22:02 (twenty years ago)

I like to think "Jackie, Dressed In Cobras" is about Jackie Curtis, but no doubt that's wishful thinking.

k/l (Ken L), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 19:18 (twenty years ago)

Their best album. I am most impressed.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

So Alfred, how does it compare with ***CHEAP SHOT WARNING*** the latest Go-Betweens?

k/l (Ken L), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 20:49 (twenty years ago)

Irrepressible formalists keep monkeying around until them little engines rev up and go.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 8 September 2005 00:30 (twenty years ago)

This album is definitely nice. I want to read the lyrics. Anybody have them?

Mickey (modestmickey), Thursday, 8 September 2005 01:09 (twenty years ago)

This one has turned out to be a grower for me. Only wish, more Neko lead vocals.

Jim Reckling (Jim Reckling), Friday, 16 September 2005 20:35 (twenty years ago)

two months pass...
What is she singing, is it "We have arrived/too late today/Bleeding Heart show" ?

k/l (Ken L), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 16:26 (twenty years ago)

this album left me disappointed like few other things this year

ZR (teenagequiet), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

Really? I still think it's their best, and one of the year's best.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 17:13 (twenty years ago)

album lyrics for your pleasure:

(sorry about the >s, can't be arsed deleting them all)

Twin Cinema
>
> In home theatres, still projecting, on distracting, a voice from the
> back, yeah.
> Double features, soft and harder, wait in silence while planning your
> attack, yeah.
> Shining through the hollow today, blinking baby heavens away.
> They've shown this on both screens.
>
> In torn seats our film leaders lead the charge of our armies into war,
> yeah.
> Lead the charge of twin teachers, false and featured, picture the

> Flipping through the photos they send you, goin' to 16 and Valencia.
> They've shown this on both screens.

>
> You hold up the cup you've been searching for since you were younger,
> When you still had the bones of an idol.
> If you still had the bones of an idol, you'd be long long gone, But
> something keeps turning you on.
>
> We cling to the raft, we are missing by half what we wanted, But we

>
>
> Use It

> The cat calls through the night,

I don't have any opinion. I'm just here to (mis)quote lyrics.

(xpost, obviously)

k/l (Ken L), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

I like this album pretty well, but it seems pretty much interchangeable with Electric Version - maybe a few more midtempo songs.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

i dunno, it just seems like they just dressed up the record with more bells and whistles and more "look at how clever we are" obtuse arrangements to make up for the songs not being as catchy as the first two. i mean, i like it ok - "jackie dressed in cobras" is great, and so are a few others, but i don't think it's anywhere close to EV and MR. particularly MR. i'm likely overreacting, but i dug the first two so much i probably had overinflated expectations.

ZR (teenagequiet), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

One potential flaw with Twin Cinema is that when the singing is slower and enunciated more clearly, Newman's poor-man's-dada lyrics become more of a liability.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 18:33 (twenty years ago)

a liability for whom? ;)

WTF, Wednesday, 16 November 2005 19:29 (twenty years ago)

I actually love Newman's lyrics, more and more with each listen. All those unique striking, singular images: "2 chicks in the parking lot crack wise on the price of fame they stood to gain." "In the streetlight dawn, this beat turns on." "I've cried five rivers on the way here. Which one will I skate away on?"

I'd actually love to hear his process. Does he write them first and then figure out complex ways to cram them into the cadances on the songs?

Mugged Outside the Jabberjaw, 1993 (Bent Over at the Arclight), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

I think he comes up with the cadences first and then finds words and phrases that fit them. I seem to remember there was an interview where he admitted as much, though I could be imagining it - I think it may have been on Pitchfork. I liked the lyrics on Slow Wonder better - they seemed more down-to-earth and understandable - but it seems like he feels the need to be enigmatic on the New Pornos stuff.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 20:59 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, the cadences thing was in the Pitchfork interview that I did. I tried to get him to talk as much about craft and writing as I could, since that was what I really wanted to know about.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Thursday, 17 November 2005 00:56 (twenty years ago)

I just went and read it. Great interview, Perpetua! You should do all Pitchfork interviews from now on, seriously. But I wish you had done one of those threads here before you talked to him where people say "Any questions for _________? I'm about to interview him or her!" I have scary-nerd-obsessive volumes of questions for the A.C.-ster.

Mugged Outside the Jabberjaw, 1993 (Bent Over at the Arclight), Thursday, 17 November 2005 00:59 (twenty years ago)

Thanks for the lyrics, by the way. This is like a mini-Christmas for me, I swear!

I'm glad you liked the interview! I'm planning on doing some more for them in the near future, but I've been kinda busy lately and I'm actually drawing a blank on who to pitch next. Maybe Robyn?

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Thursday, 17 November 2005 01:03 (twenty years ago)

I mentioned this on another New Pornographers thread, but I highly recommend getting the live session versions of "Bones of an Idol" and "Streets of Fire" on iTunes. "Bones of an Idol" is sung by Kathryn Calder, and I think she does a better job on that particular song, and "Streets of Fire" has a better arrangement and has Carl, Kathryn, and Kurt singing together instead of Dan and Neko. The versions of "Sing Me Spanish Techno" and "Graceland" are nothing special, though.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Thursday, 17 November 2005 01:24 (twenty years ago)

As for the catchiness - I didn't think it was as potent and catchy as the first two records at first, but I've come to really really really love the record. It's without a shadow of a doubt my favorite New Pornographers album, and I think that is unlikely to ever change.

Can’t find this. Are you in the UK?

Actually I see it turned 15 three days ago, but the band just acknowledged it on FB today.

I'm not crazy about the consensus that seems to have built around Twin Cinema as their best album.

To be clear, I'm a mega fan. I believe their recorded catalog is the best of the 21st century so far, and TC is incredible.

But better than Mass Romantic or Electric Version? NO! NO!

I never listened to the lyrics of the title track properly at the time but am positive they were warning us all about the dangers of Nolanism

calzino, Wednesday, 26 August 2020 22:05 (five years ago)

still got a soft spot for the slow wonder

calzino, Wednesday, 26 August 2020 22:07 (five years ago)

Was just the other day listening to songs from this album for the first time in years.

The wall-to-wall bangers on the first two albums are undeniable but I've been saying since not long after its release that TC is for sure their best album qua album.

lol, just remembered insisting as much (off board) to Matty P until he finally came around, as evidenced upthread.

I think it's their album w/ the highest % of good songs (but I'm not a mega fan myself).

“Pizza House!” (morrisp), Wednesday, 26 August 2020 22:44 (five years ago)

A playlist I made a while back has 4 songs from that album, vs. 2-3 from others.

I always guessed/assumed it was about Iraq and Afghanistan

oh I know, but I checked Genius to see if my reading is as obvious as I always assumed it was and...I guess not?

The Slow Wonder is my favourite of all tNP-related albums including Destroyer's and Neko's (and I love Destroyer and Neko)

it's a blooming hydrogen bomb of an album, it never get's old!

calzino, Thursday, 27 August 2020 00:54 (five years ago)

absolutely their best album to me, newman was in such a groove he was openly messing with form and structure on stuff like bleeding hearts and spanish techno and it turns out those are some of their best and most beloved songs.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 27 August 2020 01:35 (five years ago)

I meant the slow wonder, but this one isn't too shabby either.

I think the lyrics are pretty inscrutable, but I’m afraid I don’t see much in them to support your interpretation (other than the “armies to war” line).

“Pizza House!” (morrisp), Thursday, 27 August 2020 02:01 (five years ago)

“Use It,” I always thought, has great lyrics.

“Pizza House!” (morrisp), Thursday, 27 August 2020 02:08 (five years ago)

oh it's pretty thin, just the idea of "cinemas" as "theaters", yknow, of war. and the unusual intensity of the vocal.
