Thread for ridiculously priced CDs on Ebay 2005

There may be a similar thread already but I couldn't find anything doing a couple of searches so...

WTF?? I think I may well be selling my copy soon, I could probably get hold of the original LP for a few quid quite easily!!

Apparently the Raincoats & Au Pairs 1st albums go for a lot too (I have both of them as well!).

So, any other stupidly overpriced CDs I should think about selling??

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Friday, 29 April 2005 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Hell, that's a reissue anyway!

"Hello, Overground Records, like?"

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 29 April 2005 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I know, and it doesn't even have the Safety Net or Shopping Parade EP's on it! (they were on 53rd & 3rd and Subway records so I guess licensing was difficult?)

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Friday, 29 April 2005 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

The Au Pairs' first album is in my local crap emporium for £5 on vinyl - is this the format that eBay is going nutso for, or just CD?

DJ Mencap0))), Friday, 29 April 2005 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Just the CD, I think, sorry.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Friday, 29 April 2005 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

The best thing I ever sold on Ebay was a 7" I found for 50p that turned out to be a side-project of someone out of Bauhaus and a cartoonist whose name escapes me called the Sinister Ducks. Sold it for £62!!

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Friday, 29 April 2005 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

and a cartoonist whose name escapes me

Alan Moore.

just wish i had picked up the pile in leeds's Jumbo records when they were shelling em off for £1.99 each ..

mark e (mark e), Friday, 29 April 2005 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

The Au Pairs 1st album version that fetches lots is the RPM version with all the singles on it.

The Raincoats 1st album doesn't go for that much - you should get it for £15. There seem to be lots about.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 29 April 2005 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

The Northside album always fetches £20 on CD!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 29 April 2005 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess these are the sorts of things you don't know until it happens on e-bay.

Like the "Let's play Domination" CD, I didn't know it was a hard-to-find item until the recent chat about its existance here. Whether that makes it a 'big bucks on e-bay' item, I wouldn't know unless I sold it there. Which isn't going to happen unless I find more...

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 29 April 2005 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

no way.

must be their mums/dads etc.

mark e (mark e), Friday, 29 April 2005 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Darts.

No idea what it's about but their CD's seem to be passing hands for ridiculous amounts of money.

Adam Ant - Beautiful dream CD single

I just realised that the seller of the Adam Ant single is a long time Ilxor.

This speaks more to the cdr/psychster/nnck underground scene...

oh dear lord. and all hala strana releases are essentially the same. the noo wired amrikuh stuff does bring in obscene amounts of money. $60-75 for a cdr that came out less than a year ago and probably isn't even out of print? WHY NOT!

mutiilation's vampires of black imperial blood (and various other obscure french 'black legions' metal stuff like vlad tepes) used to regularly go for $120+ each.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Friday, 29 April 2005 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

why does that adam ant command such a price?

peter smith (plsmith), Friday, 29 April 2005 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

that adam ant thing has to be a joke -- $3500 for a beat up cd single??! nooo wayyyy.

but i AM gonna sell my remaining six organs vinyl this week -- how can a broke-ass man NOT?!

Michael J McGonigal (mike mcgonigal), Friday, 29 April 2005 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

also, theres a boredoms' super roots 7 up there right now, guys! only a couple hours left...

peter smith (plsmith), Friday, 29 April 2005 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, the late-80's early-90's rap stuff on CD that is out of print really goes for a lot these days. i sold the first poor rightous teachers cd for 35 bucks. i got it at the thrift store for a dollar. that stuff isn't really that hard to find either at pawn shops and in used cd racks. i mean, they made a zillion of them. there used to be a great soundtrack list. crazy prices for 80's & 90's film soundtracks that were out of print. Newsies was a big one for a while.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 29 April 2005 18:05 (twenty-one years ago)

if i could, i would buy you all Airwolf soundtracks for 300 bucks. you are worth it.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 29 April 2005 18:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I have that Main Source CD! Too bad it's out of print, everyone should own one.

late-80's early-90's rap stuff on CD that is out of print really goes for a lot these days.

My Two Kings In A Cipher CD (I've never met anyone who bought this as well) doesn't seem to worth much though (wake up, people! lost classic alert! ;-) and Showbiz & AG's Runaway Slaves isn't up for sale (maybe it's THAT RARE!). Not that I'm particularly looking to part with these. If need be, I can always get rid of some Motown Junk!

JoB (JoB), Friday, 29 April 2005 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I sold my copy of the first INterpol EP for $107. Thank you Interpol!

kyle (akmonday), Sunday, 15 May 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

Opal's Early Recordings was going for over $100, the last I see on Ebay was $65. In the age of file-sharing, I can't imagine paying more than $25ish for a single disc (ie what I paid for Early Recordings from an Amazon seller at Christmas).

ronny longjohns (ronny longjohns), Monday, 16 May 2005 06:03 (twenty years ago)

That Adam Ant CD was awesome, quick let's find some before the magazines do a report on it...

A while ago, I got a single at a charity shop by "Joolz" (not the punk poetess) called "Friend" which was a cheap/cheery/badly sung 'jingle' of a tune, the shop had about fifty of them. What struck my eye was the credit of "J. Fordham", and yes it definitely is Julia. So, I hid it away somewhere, and the other copies disappeared quite quickly out of the shop. I don't know if the price has shot up, and I don't think she's collectible in the broader sense, but she may have more than one 'rabid' fan, of which you only need two on e-bay to have a 'hit'.

Don't lots of these 'two of two' sets end up in charity shops and/or "Poundland" shops? Do the labels and/or the pressing factories get shot of their over-runs this way?

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 16 May 2005 07:33 (twenty years ago)

I have sold a bunch of stuff on the Fax label (anyone remember that? Pete Namlook and whatnot? Ambient electronic stuff?) for well over $400 a disc.

I have a copy of New Order 'Low-Life' on original Factory with the car CD case, but I'd never sell it. Brilliant packaging (the photos are all separate and it has a vellum overlay so you can make your own cover with Gillian or Hooky if you want to!) and the sound is far far better than the American WB release.

And you can bet your ass that I'm gonna go home, burn and promptly sell my copy of that Shop Assistants CD! Damn!

Regarding the forementioned I Love to Paint by Saint Etienne (which frequently goes for hundreds of dollars on eBay), here's a tidbit on the Saint Etienne web site from Bob:

Fan club albums... we're working on the artwork for Dirty Laundry (coulda called it Boys From Summer but Sarah would feel left out). If it's ready in time for the shows it could end up on the merch stall, otherwise the site is being spruced up as I write. Tee shirts v soon, promise. And we're working out how to make I Love To Paint and Built On Sand without upsetting people who have forked out for the originals.

So...I Love To Paint and Built on Sand re-issued! Hot dog!!

okay so any albini, shellac or big black fan already owns the cd songs about f*#$ing cd right? well this is the original version, released NOT by touch and go but released by blast first. this version of the cd is extremely rare and very very out of print. forget scrambling for the shellac live in japan lp that you will never get, or paying too much for the german 7" that only has two songs on it. go back to the beginning and snag this real collector's item. good luck and happy bidding, billard players. please check out our other auctions as well as our ebaystore under recordcollectorinc.

I'd love a copy of that Just Ice disc....it's classic! I'm actually not *that* surprised it's fetching a lot on ebay, but 200 seems extreme...

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 23 June 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

The car carry cases were just little cardboard slipsleeves with somewhat coordinating artwork to the album -- the "Low Life" one is white with the silver/black "Orchew" style logo on it, but no pics or anything.

Jesus, if that Drexciya story is true, I may be able to buy a new car...

Hutlock (Hutlock), Thursday, 23 June 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

That Drexciya thing on abay was the Clarence G record (by James Stinson) from the late 80s/early 90s. And apparently it sold for 5400 UK pounds!

So, I bought a used, good-condition copy of the first Brides of Funkenstein album on CD for 13 Euros...

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51ATGCVW04L._SS500_.jpg

The guy at the record store mentioned it's a rare Japan-only reissue, so I checked Amazon, and saw that the lowest price for even an used copy was over 150 dollars(!). Do some people actually buy these ridiculously-priced rare CDs, or are the folks who sell them at Amazon just hoping to come across the lone fool who would invest such an amount for a CD? Because I might seriously consider selling the album if you can make over 100 bucks on it; it's not even that good a record (though the second track is really nice).

Tuomas, Monday, 20 December 2010 23:03 (fifteen years ago)

I think your second scenario is the one.

Set it up for "over 100" and leave it, see what happens. If it sells within 6 months, there you go.

Mark G, Tuesday, 21 December 2010 09:59 (fifteen years ago)

I have sold quite a few CDs in the £20-50 price range on Amazon UK and discogs, so it definitely does happen.

The most expensive was via my work where we found a copy of one of the early Biffy Clyro EPs from before they made it big, released on the local college music course label back in 1999 or so, and sold that for about £130. Which was nice.

Your cousin, Marvin Cobain (C. Grisso/McCain), Tuesday, 15 March 2011 06:33 (fifteen years ago)

This is very mysterious:

I had a look at what he has on sale, (one of the biggest list of 'current' items I've ever seen on there) and there's a whole bunch of stuff (books, CDs, etc) that have prices like this, even going into the tens of thousands.

Anyway, going into 'completed' items, I find that a couple of $1,000 books have apparently sold. One, a "tips for games for toddlers" which could never be worth that much, even if it had been written by JD Salinger..

So, I go to the 'detail' page for the sale, and it shows the purchaser (masked) and that they paid $34.

Something very fishy about this...... Is this some sort of "get big refund as things didn't sell" scam?

Mark G, Tuesday, 15 March 2011 10:10 (fifteen years ago)
