I'm now listening to the Kruder and Dorfmeister one and am quite impressed. What's the skinny on the rest?

Sterling Clover, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Their new track for the album is another revenge-of-lounge infused piece that I've been hearing in some dancehall lately, tho of course this is not dancehall. There's a laid-back jump-up groove with nothing in common with hip-hop, synth washes, and a handy asymetricality to the crossfader work. It feels like a slow rhumba, or an extended trance break.

Sterling Clover, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If it's who I'm thinking of, I have one of the DJ Kicks CDs that I got in a Record and Tape Exchange (don't know why that should seem significant just this second), but not sure I'm qualified to weigh in on the debate just yet.

(plus, I have some explaining to do on another thread).

felicity, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It has been said by others that the Nightmares on Wax DJ Kicks is really really good relative to other stuff they do, but I haven't heard it. The DJ Loco one is the only one I've heard and it's actually pretty good for someone who threw lots of naked models on the cover of his first album.

Tracer Hand, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ah my favourite mix-series! Let's see. Kemistry & Storm is a great hard jungle mix. Stereo MC's is a nice one that goes through a lot of styles. Trüby Trio is too polished though pleasurable. Stacey Pullen's DJ Kicks is probably my favourite techno/house mix-cd. Claude Young is a bit too spartan. I have heard the Thievery Corporation one a couple of times and that's a nice summer-mix.

and as always: at www.k7.com you can hear most of them on realaudio

Omar, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yeah, the claude young one is very sparse. theres 2 good tracks on it, the rest is ok. is the stacey pullen one better then?

gareth, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah much better. Although i like the way Claude does that cross- fader stutter. Easiest trick in the DJ-book but it never fails to make me happy.

Omar, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have the Thievery Corp one - it's a kind of travelogue of lounge & house (with just a hint of reggae). It's pleasant enough.

Jeff W, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Smith and Mighty one is good. A good mix of dub, hip-hop and drum n' bass. The Thievery Corp. gets boring after a while, I think.

Michael Bourke, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

that's their modus operandi, no?

I can second the Kemistry + Storm recommendation, that one is great. Andrea Parker's DJ Kicks isn't bad either, I prefer that to her solo album "Kiss My Arp" which just isn't that worthwhile.

Dare, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

there is a rockers hi-fi dj kicks that is both hilariously dated and quite entertaining. it's a mixture of dub, drum'n'bass and some other genre that doesn't exist any more. the hilarious 'come on my selector' calls crack me up any time.

fields of salmon, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I heart the Smith & Mighty one. I'd like the Kemistry & Storm one; can't believe I slept on that one when it came out.

Dan Perry, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

K&D and Nightmares on Wax have stood out for me. They unearth more badass rare shit and make it all flow. I am more interested in hearing what almost any of the DJ Kicks artists has to offer than those in the "Back to Mine" series - Groove Armada, Everything But the Girl, Morcheeba.

Curt, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've listened to most of them and like them all. A good one not mentioned above is by Nicolette. It's a double CD with everything -- drum'n'bass, house, some classic techno, and production help by Plaid!

DSiedler, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I got the Victor Duplaix one the other day. Boy is that an awful mix cd. Possibly the worst I've ever heard. Soul-less, needlessly fiddly beats, those grim 'spacy' lyrics that Naked music and wanky brit deep house artists seem to favour, and the most irritating vocodered fake radio announcements speckled throughout the cd. Couldn't be bothered to listen through to the end even after I started skipping through and only listening to the first 30" of each track...

jacob, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Thanks for the warning J-man. Almost got suckered by the reviews.

Omar, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Great series. The Kruder & Dorfmeister one is class, the Smith & Mighty one is truly awesome, Nightmares on Wax is a fantastic hiphop album, love the Truby Trio one (very Acid Jazz).

Andy C, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 7 August 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

there are better comps I think, to be honest.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 7 August 2004 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I was entranced by the prospect of having Dani Siciliano, Bobby Womack, Ghost Cauldron and a Tiga version of 'Hot In Herre' on one album.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 7 August 2004 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's very much the label's comp and hence the track selection is a bit limited. I dunno, I'm not massively into it anyway, others may disagree.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 7 August 2004 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

the tiga version of 'hot in herre' is beyond awful.

cºzen (Cozen), Saturday, 7 August 2004 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I like it. I hated it first. But now I like it.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 7 August 2004 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

don't think it's been said yet but, Trevor Jackson's Playgroup DJ Kicks's CD is beyond fantastic.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 7 August 2004 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah love that one. that spoken word version of "Tainted Love" and that "The Sky Is Not Crying" track. magic. can't sell a copy in the shop to save our lives though. too obscure I suppose.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 7 August 2004 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes! "The Sky Is Not Crying"! One of the best tracks ever ever ever! It's like the missing link between Metro Area and Richard Davis.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 8 August 2004 05:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I also really like the Smith and Hack song but was disturbed to learn i'ts just basically wicked edit of a Bohannon sample...anyone know the name of the original track?

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Sunday, 8 August 2004 08:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Alba don't buy that, it looks decidedly mediocre. Cozen you're wrong about "hot in Herre". Dan is right about the playgroup - it rocks. I Love the Almost-identical-to-the-original but somehow 100 times better cover of "Behind the Wheel". That Ralphi Rosario track was new to me too and is pretty great.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 8 August 2004 10:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the way you two look after me.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 8 August 2004 10:49 (twenty-one years ago)

the tiga version of 'hot in herre' is beyond awful.

surely you mean "is the best thing ever"?

toby (tsg20), Sunday, 8 August 2004 12:55 (twenty-one years ago)

my god what is it with the love for that song?! someone, somewhere back me up.

cºzen (Cozen), Sunday, 8 August 2004 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

oh also, the best thing ever obv. = the orig. version of 'hot in herre' (don't quite know if I'm ready to hear that again though. it's been a while.)

cºzen (Cozen), Sunday, 8 August 2004 13:28 (twenty-one years ago)

no love for Tiga of herre.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Sunday, 8 August 2004 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

someone, somewhere back me up.

i'm with you. that song makes me feel soiled.

lauren (laurenp), Sunday, 8 August 2004 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

"checkinyourreflectionandtellin'yourbestfriend"

Tiga (Ronan), Sunday, 8 August 2004 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Stereo MC's DJ Kicks. So funky and unexpected from a beyond-the-grave group. Absolutely my favorite in the series.

harshaw (jube), Sunday, 8 August 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

the kick on tiga's "hot in herre" is loud as hell. it's got those great tweaked cowbell noises that are all over the dfa's remix of "she wants to move". in fact, it's got pretty much the same sort of snap! and pop as the "she wants to move" remix. so what's the problem? yes the rap sucks but so do the vocals on moroder tracks. all y'all who can get down with that track but not tiga are feelin the indie guilt, i think.

vahid (vahid), Sunday, 8 August 2004 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

OTM!

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 8 August 2004 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

there are some comments upthread that are totally bizarro universe to me. i'll just weigh in on a couple of these.

search:

smith & mighty - is totally magical. beautiful dubby trip hop intro which suddenly shifts into a "best-of" of underrated bristol jungle. you probably need it just for more rockers "show love" which has the greatest diva break ever, the filtering making her voice sound like a rocketship straining to drag the whole track into space. and also krust's remix of "bass speaker", under rakim's "kick a hole in the speaker" sample he throws down these frenzied bass farts that sound like he's trying to strangle the woofer from the inside.

vahid (vahid), Sunday, 8 August 2004 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

all y'all who can get down with that track but not tiga are feelin the indie guilt, i think.

what about those of us who don't like either?

lauren (laurenp), Sunday, 8 August 2004 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

you are ok.

vahid (vahid), Sunday, 8 August 2004 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

damn I got told.

cºzen (Cozen), Sunday, 8 August 2004 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

it is all about the kick. also the fact that tiga is incapable of human error.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 8 August 2004 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

he's capable of eyeliner error.

lauren (laurenp), Sunday, 8 August 2004 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

that track fr me ws all about the quotables ('unless you gawn do it', 'the roof, the roof...', 'got a pole in the basement').

cºzen (Cozen), Sunday, 8 August 2004 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

it's also much funnier. I don't like tiga much on the whole but his djkicks is great... and he's hott.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 8 August 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

ok, downloading both now. happy?

cºzen (Cozen), Sunday, 8 August 2004 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

his dj kicks is great, though I don't own it. my friends around here in the styx are really into it which is odd cos many of them are LADS (sadly).

does it actually have that brilliant black strobe mix of martini brothers or am I imagining that?

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 8 August 2004 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

DJ Kicks vs Back to Mine vs Another Late Night

peepee (peepee), Sunday, 8 August 2004 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

it does have that you are right. His version of Madame Hollywood is much better than the original imo. it also has "time has changed" by codex and flexor. fantastic.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 8 August 2004 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 8 August 2004 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

So, I'm not alone, Harshaw!

peepee (peepee), Sunday, 8 August 2004 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

having said all that i DO prefer the playgroup one.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 8 August 2004 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I really like Tiga's American Gigolo aswell FWIW.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 8 August 2004 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

The !K7150 compilation is good but not great. My copy's got a DVD with some (admittedly mostly quite dodgy) videos on it too.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Sunday, 8 August 2004 20:59 (twenty-one years ago)

also i saw it for about 7 quid in fopp, so....

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 8 August 2004 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

no indie guilt here. ever!

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Sunday, 8 August 2004 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I've got the Andrea Parker one around somewhere and remember thinking that it's at least worth a listen, although I can't remember why.

mike h. (mike h.), Monday, 9 August 2004 03:35 (twenty-one years ago)

The !K7150 compilation is good but not great.
Agreed. But there's a promo mix CD of tracks from it (a sort of honorary DJ Kicks record) that I like a lot more.

zebedee (zebedee), Monday, 9 August 2004 09:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I am definitely with those who love Tiga and Playgroup's mixes. For those who hate the Tiga cover, get Richard X's remix of it already (the same goes for the lovers too, but this is my preferred version).

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Monday, 9 August 2004 12:17 (twenty-one years ago)

two years pass...

the claude young mix is brilliant, except for a couple of unnecessary backspins. not 'spartan' or 'sparse' at all, really, just sort of... inhuman?

, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 23:52 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, i enjoyed the claude young mix. a bit on the relentless side however so you have to be in the right mood.

i really liked the stacey pullen although even that was trumped by his exceptional bbc radio 1 essential mix (1996) that includes some of the same tracks.

sam500, Thursday, 2 August 2007 00:49 (eighteen years ago)

Booka Shade are up next, for what it's worth

Telephone thing, Thursday, 2 August 2007 02:44 (eighteen years ago)

best: playgroup
biggest eye-opener: henrik schwarz
sentimental fave: stereo mcs (!)

i can always get behind tiga's 'hot in herre'.

haitch, Thursday, 2 August 2007 13:53 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah Playgroup's is awesome. It was quite an eye-opener for me at the time as well.

it will be interesting to see what Booka Shade do. The only DJ set i've heard from them was a fairly straightforward electro-house/minimal set, but I could imagine the DJ Kicks being closer to the atmospheric parts of Memento.

Tim F, Thursday, 2 August 2007 14:35 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah the Playgroup one kinda set the tone for everything that happened after it.

Ronan, Thursday, 2 August 2007 16:14 (eighteen years ago)

No love for Chicken Lips?

Telephone thing, Thursday, 2 August 2007 20:13 (eighteen years ago)

yes! the nina hagen song kills me every time. gets a bit samey in the second half though.

how is the Booka Shade one? weird to see Fialka, The Streets and Hawley in it

i really like the Hot Chip one, if only for 'My Piano', Wax Stag, the New Order/Young Leek and Noze

blueski, Monday, 8 October 2007 22:41 (eighteen years ago)

I love the Erlend Øye one. Lots of glorious electro.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 8 October 2007 23:23 (eighteen years ago)

i think you could make a pretty solid case for the booka shade one being the strongest dj kicks mix ever

^@^, Monday, 8 October 2007 23:25 (eighteen years ago)

HMV have got a selection of these CDs in their current 2 for £10 promotion. All the incentive I needed to finally pick up the Daddy G and Chicken Lips mixes. Both are great.

i don't get the appeal of the juan maclean one. ordinary tracks, ordinary mixing. it's like some random mix from the internet.

Death Cab for Kuti (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 08:42 (fifteen years ago)

8-X DEATH IN VEGAS 8-X

so this thing starts out with chopped and screwed italo, then moves into something that sounds like a cheesy "trans europe express" rip at first but suddenly breaks down into a tuff abstract techno break thats as chopped and phased as a prime urban tribe track. then there's a third section with super tight electro zaps over what sounds like a klaus schulze track. anyway the third track is the one that takes my head off into future shock territory. the washed-out and slowed down choir that starts the thing is at like the exact midpoint between chillwave, witch house and old rising high chillout tracks, but then there's these echoey balearic freak folk guitar / middle eastern string stabs that fleck the whole thing, and then throbbing gabber-like bass under the whole thing. basically this mix couldn't get more "secret history of goth crunk" if it tried.

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 04:58 (fifteen years ago)

The Detroit mixes were pretty good. Still listen to the Stacey Pullen sometimes although I prefer his BBC Essential Mix from around the same time (which included a few of the same tracks). Such a great DJ in his day - the recent mixes of his I've heard have been uber-generic tech-house...yawn.

The Claude Young is decent too but harder.

sam500, Thursday, 11 November 2010 07:16 (fifteen years ago)

Erlend Oye one is the all time classic for me. Sure the mixing is pretty awful (but not as bad as Annie's one. jesus christ!) but the tunes...it's the record that got me into microhouse ergo probably the most important record of my teen years. Timeless stuff really.

Apparat one is nice enough, not listened to it much. Hoped that playing it on a longish car journey through the Fens with my dad would get me into it properly...just made me a bit bored tbh.

Darren Huckerby (Dwight Yorke), Thursday, 11 November 2010 11:50 (fifteen years ago)

ha ha I bought Annie's one the other week for $5 and have not played it yet, but thought it can't possibly be as bad as her mixing was live!

map, Friday, 26 August 2016 14:11 (nine years ago)

Seconded although I need to give it a few more spins.
The Dam Funk mix is also great - flows really nicely.

millmeister, Friday, 26 August 2016 14:28 (nine years ago)

track 3-5 on the Dam-Funk one are incredible

whole thing's good but that stretch + the original stuff on the second half are definitely the highlights

frogbs, Friday, 26 August 2016 14:39 (nine years ago)

the verticle lines "theme from beach boy" instrumental is sooo my shit

brimstead, Friday, 26 August 2016 23:14 (nine years ago)

agreed, map -- moodyman is by far my fave album of the year

saer, Friday, 11 September 2020 09:18 (five years ago)

Yeah I want acid and bleeps and bangers and beguiling space melodies.

Matt DC, Friday, 11 September 2020 10:02 (five years ago)

Just listening to Long Forgotten Fairytale now, it's great

or something, Friday, 11 September 2020 11:42 (five years ago)

Its v poppy, not bleepy and banging at all really. Tho as the opener maybe not indicative of the rest of the mix

as someone who loves the Tiga entry into the series, I really didn't need to have it explained to me that it was "fun" because it contains an unexpected cover, multiple times

boxedjoy, Friday, 3 December 2021 11:59 (four years ago)

this thread got me fixing to revisit the series for entries that i haven't heard, which i'm realizing now is quite a few. are there any sucky ones that i should avoid?

davey, Sunday, 5 December 2021 21:59 (four years ago)

oh shit Jesse Lanza did the most recent volume? ok!
