come on, i know you're watching.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:08 (twenty years ago)

so far:

loverboy - good. doing "hero" by enrique iglesias
cece peniston - looks hotter than ever, sounds great. plans to sing faith hill.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:10 (twenty years ago)

the host dude is cute!

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:13 (twenty years ago)

now a flock of seagulls is on!

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:13 (twenty years ago)

they're awful!

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:14 (twenty years ago)

the stranglers just got a plug! flock of seagulls are going to sing a ryan cabrera song!

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:16 (twenty years ago)

arrested development have the old man! awesome!

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:18 (twenty years ago)

I was surprised to see the old man.

Why are they even faking the live musicians, though?

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:19 (twenty years ago)

I really think the bands should be given points if they actually recreate some of their shtick. Like if Mike Reno wears the red headband and if Flock had some new wave fashion on instead of sweats and baseball caps. For still having the old man around Arrested Development get MAD points.

miccio (miccio), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:21 (twenty years ago)

arrested development = los lonely boys "heaven"

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:22 (twenty years ago)

someone's got a SICK sense of humor over there

miccio (miccio), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:22 (twenty years ago)

oh shit I forgot it was on today.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:22 (twenty years ago)

You can still catch Tiffany and, um, someone else if you turn on the tv now. And then everyone coming back and doing a new song.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:24 (twenty years ago)

I have to assume this is the same host from the UK version?

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:24 (twenty years ago)

Did Vernon Kaye host the UK version? He's hosting this one.

Ian Riese-Moraine's all but an ark-lark! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:27 (twenty years ago)

yes, vernon kaye! he's so cute.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:27 (twenty years ago)

Wow, I thought Tiffany's breasts were going to pop out!

Ian Riese-Moraine's all but an ark-lark! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:28 (twenty years ago)

Is Tiffany preggers, or just a victim of the post-mommy spread?

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:28 (twenty years ago)

i didnt think there was anything wrong with the way she looked.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:30 (twenty years ago)

my wife just said "get on ILM and ask 'em if Tiffany's pregnant"

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:31 (twenty years ago)

omfg i love tiffany so much. her performance was total diva-factor.

she can sing the socks off of everyone else performing. the crowd seemed to dig her too.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:31 (twenty years ago)

She's no Debbie Gibson, that's for sure!

I didn't really think there was anything wrong with her appearance either except that I thought her nipple would pop out, as I said. My mother kept yelling at the television screen for her to put some clothes on, though.

Ian Riese-Moraine's all but an ark-lark! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:32 (twenty years ago)

I am not watching it (at work) but I am so rooting for Loverboy. I have no idea how they could pull off "Hero" though.

miccio (miccio), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:32 (twenty years ago)

I always liked Tiffany more than Debbie Gibson because, instead of singing her own crappy songs, she had great taste in covers.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:33 (twenty years ago)

It's funny that back when she was a kid she'd hide those things behind baggy sweaters and denim jackets and now...she isn't.

I prefered Tiffany because she'd make those pukey sounds "into the NIAAHHHGHT"

miccio (miccio), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:33 (twenty years ago)

i didnt think there was anything wrong with the way she looked.

Well, I didn't either. She looked good. Just different than the last time I saw her (which was several years ago on VH1's The List).

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:34 (twenty years ago)

OMG LOVERBOY

It looks like Mike Reno's has lost a lot of weight! He can fit into tight pants once again!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:34 (twenty years ago)

is he wearing the headband?

miccio (miccio), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:35 (twenty years ago)

My mother's flipped it away from Loverboy's performance of "Hero" but it sounded better than Enrique from what little I heard.

Ian Riese-Moraine's all but an ark-lark! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:35 (twenty years ago)

I'm sorry but it couldn't sound better than Enrique's.

miccio (miccio), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:36 (twenty years ago)

i thought it was really good.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:37 (twenty years ago)

Awesome!

miccio (miccio), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:37 (twenty years ago)

wow, cece owns this.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:38 (twenty years ago)

My favorite original performance of the night: Arrested Development.

My favorite cover performance will probably be: CeCe Peniston. Though I'll take a wait and see attitude there. (Hell, CeCe can sing circles around Faith Hill ANY DAY OF THE WEEK.)

Oops, dinnertime!

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:38 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I was thinking that too. She makes Faith Hill sound like an amateur.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:38 (twenty years ago)

Well, admittedly I liked to keep my headphones on while at the skating rink around the time Iglesias was everywhere.

My mother just flipped it back to CeCe Peniston and changed it back five seconds later because she thought she sounded as pitchy as the ladies on American Idol. *sigh*

Ian Riese-Moraine's all but an ark-lark! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:39 (twenty years ago)

Mike Score lives in Cocoa Beach? Damn! I live about 10 miles away from him. I'm going to stalk him this weekend.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:39 (twenty years ago)

I never thought I'd say it's possible to butcher a Ryan Cabrera song but Flock are really doing some weird things with it.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:40 (twenty years ago)

I've never heard the original of this Ryan Cabrera song, so I can't contrast it at all. But AFOS makes it sound like an original.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:41 (twenty years ago)

Being forced to twerk a Cabrera song is Mike Score's karmic punishment for not using the original line-up and not wearing new wave duds.

miccio (miccio), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:41 (twenty years ago)

I thought CeCe sounded really good!! She actually sold me on that slightly drecky song, which is really impressive.

Holy crap. AFOS = EMBARRASSING x1,500,000. This song DOES NOT FIT THEM! Mike Score, you did BAAAAAAAAAAAAADLY.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:41 (twenty years ago)

miccio OTM

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:43 (twenty years ago)

it sounds like AFOS heard the Cabrera original once and then took the lyric sheet and tempo and come up with a completely different (and strangely grunge-esque) melody.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:43 (twenty years ago)

Score sounds like a yelpier, more out-of-breath Mick Hucknall.

Ian Riese-Moraine's all but an ark-lark! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:43 (twenty years ago)

Is he using ex-members of Suicidal Tendencies in his touring band?

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:43 (twenty years ago)

is he wearing the headband?

No, he wasn't :(

Their version was good, but it wasn't as good as Enrique's version. But the Mike Reno of 1983 would have been spectacular with that song.

I hope nobody here was a Flock of Seagulls fan. Ouch!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:44 (twenty years ago)

stupid question: are the performers choosing the songs or what?

Al (sitcom), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:45 (twenty years ago)

haha 'i live in fayetteville - the deep south' hahahahaha my grandma lives there, it's fucking suburbia. to be fair evander holyfield and webster live there too.

j blount (papa la bas), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:47 (twenty years ago)

speech: you know her as a dancer.

wow, talk about an insult!

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:48 (twenty years ago)

I never disliked the two AFOS singles I've heard (the obvious "I Ran" and "Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You)"), but I can't say I'm a fan by any means.

Ian Riese-Moraine's all but an ark-lark! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:48 (twenty years ago)

they sound alright, i really really wish i'd caught cece.

j blount (papa la bas), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:48 (twenty years ago)

That was an xxxpost. Damn. (xpost)

Ian Riese-Moraine's all but an ark-lark! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:48 (twenty years ago)

the loverboy was quite meh i thought. he just didn't have the range for Hero.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:49 (twenty years ago)

eeek TAN

j blount (papa la bas), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:49 (twenty years ago)

wow, this kind of sucks. but hey, tiffany's got some big ass tittays.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:51 (twenty years ago)

They're mesmerising, yeah.

Arrested Development made a drastic improvement on "Heaven". It was actually listenable!

Ian Riese-Moraine's all but an ark-lark! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:52 (twenty years ago)

christ first craig ferguson now this guy ye gods

j blount (papa la bas), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:52 (twenty years ago)

that cover was amazing. if cece or ad dont win, im inciting a riot.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:53 (twenty years ago)

Tiffany looked about 20 years younger on stage than she did in those interviews.

But yeah, she kinda butchered the song.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:53 (twenty years ago)

I vote for Ce Ce.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:54 (twenty years ago)

wtf - a movie, for THEATERS, starring chris noth and heather locklear??? coming out during the summer????

j blount (papa la bas), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:54 (twenty years ago)

I agree, Maria. xxxpost

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:55 (twenty years ago)

CeCe, that is.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:55 (twenty years ago)

Ok, yay for Arrested Development. They were my 2nd choice.

Ian Riese-Moraine's all but an ark-lark! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:58 (twenty years ago)

Haddaway is performing next week. YES.

hahahahahahahaha xpost!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:58 (twenty years ago)

arrested development totally didn't deserve to win.

argh.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:58 (twenty years ago)

how old must AD's old man be now?

Al (sitcom), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:58 (twenty years ago)

their outro song was teh suck.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:59 (twenty years ago)

are we sure that's the same old man? isn't it possible they just got another old man and figured everyone would go 'o look - they still have the old man'?

j blount (papa la bas), Friday, 3 June 2005 01:00 (twenty years ago)

OMG Haddaway

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Friday, 3 June 2005 01:02 (twenty years ago)

James, you too? All they need to do is show Melanie Lynskey for a split second and then it'll be justified. xxxpost

Ian Riese-Moraine's all but an ark-lark! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 3 June 2005 01:04 (twenty years ago)

j blount (papa la bas), Friday, 3 June 2005 01:05 (twenty years ago)

Once again, I scream --- HADDAWAY!

I'm so rooting for him next week.

Ian Riese-Moraine's all but an ark-lark! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 3 June 2005 01:06 (twenty years ago)

The host is great.

(For UK people):

Didn't he host a show called "Boys and Girls"?

PB, Friday, 3 June 2005 01:07 (twenty years ago)

Gee, I wonder what song of his own he'll perform.

xp

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 3 June 2005 01:08 (twenty years ago)

vernon kaye is rubbish

RJG (RJG), Friday, 3 June 2005 01:24 (twenty years ago)

I think they need to get Oingo Boingo for this show.

Joe (Joe), Saturday, 4 June 2005 02:21 (twenty years ago)

Not if they want gygax! to watch.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 4 June 2005 02:30 (twenty years ago)

Haddaway and Tiffany were on the UK version of this too. Reality show whores that they are. Haddaway was brilliant.

Vernon Kaye is horrible. Please keep him.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 4 June 2005 10:55 (twenty years ago)

Okay --

The Knack still look pretty damn good. They're playing "My Sharona" slightly slower than the original went, but it's still tight. Doug Feiger's voice is still pretty good. All in all, pretty unembarrassing overall for the original song part -- except for that little hand thing Doug did toward the end. What's the cover? Oh, Jet's "Are You Gonna Be My Girl"! Excellent choice IMHO.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 10 June 2005 00:06 (twenty years ago)

Weird, why is it every time I try to search for any specific thread today it never shows up even when I put in the exact title?

Ian Riese-Moraine. Exposing ambitious careerists as charlatans since 1986. (East, Friday, 10 June 2005 00:08 (twenty years ago)

Haddaway's gonna cover "Toxic"!

Ian Riese-Moraine. Exposing ambitious careerists as charlatans since 1986. (East, Friday, 10 June 2005 00:09 (twenty years ago)

Haddaway's next! Let's see what he's going to be like.

OMG, backup dancers. OMG, I can't stop thinking about those cheesy nightclub guys from "SNL" who used "What Is Love?" as their theme song. OMG. They SO should've gotten Will Ferrell in to do his little dancey bit in the background. That would've made this seriously awesome. As of now -- cheese city. Cheesariffic. Cheese on top of cheese. What's the cover? Britney's "Toxic". UGH. Untalented cheese on top of untalented cheese on top of untalented cheese. Big. Fat. F.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 10 June 2005 00:10 (twenty years ago)

Funnily enough, though, I've STILL never heard "Toxic".

Yeah, it was very cheesy. My mum and I kept laughing throughout. Will Ferrell should have been there, you're right!

Ian Riese-Moraine. Exposing ambitious careerists as charlatans since 1986. (East, Friday, 10 June 2005 00:11 (twenty years ago)

Alanis Morrissette and Will Smith sung at the basketball playoff game on another channel.

Ian Riese-Moraine. Exposing ambitious careerists as charlatans since 1986. (East, Friday, 10 June 2005 00:12 (twenty years ago)

I reported that because I can see them doing this in twenty years' time.

Ian Riese-Moraine. Exposing ambitious careerists as charlatans since 1986. (East, Friday, 10 June 2005 00:13 (twenty years ago)

Uh, xpost.

Ian, I just used my browser's search function to search for the title in the expanded new answers page. That's how I found this thread. Otherwise -- yeah, this place needs to get its search function in check.

(xpost again!)

Honey, all you need to know about is who originally did that song. Anyway, yeah, the presence of at least one Roxbury guy would have made the whole viewing experience TOTALLY rewarding. But, hey, I'm big upping The Knack here, so, well.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 10 June 2005 00:13 (twenty years ago)

arrested development = los lonely boys "heaven"

los lonely boys "heaven" = Sam Cooke "Darling You Send Me", obv.

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Friday, 10 June 2005 00:13 (twenty years ago)

Alanis Morrissette and Will Smith sung at the basketball playoff game on another channel.

I know. They're here in S.A. to perform during the first game of the Finals between our Spurs and the Pistons. I'm not going to watch one moment of that because of issues I'll raise on the appropriate NBA thread on ILE. But now -- Tommy Tutone!!

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 10 June 2005 00:14 (twenty years ago)

I'm gonna root for The Knack now instead of Haddaway.

Ian Riese-Moraine. Exposing ambitious careerists as charlatans since 1986. (East, Friday, 10 June 2005 00:14 (twenty years ago)

Honey, all you need to know about is who originally did that song

I know -- it's just funny how ignorant I am of the Top 40, though. I think I only know two songs on the current one. I should not be on ILM as I don't seem to love music as much as I thought.

Ian Riese-Moraine. Exposing ambitious careerists as charlatans since 1986. (East, Friday, 10 June 2005 00:16 (twenty years ago)

Okay, "867-5309" is one of my absolute favorite one-hit wonder songs. So I'm expecting something good. Which is what I'm getting. Lots of something good. OMG, this performance -- great fun. The singing isn't the best, but hey, Tommy Tutone weren't exactly known for their SINGING. What's the cover? Blink 182's "Small Things"?!?! Uh, we'll see.

OMG! The Motels!!!!!

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 10 June 2005 00:17 (twenty years ago)

YES!

Ian Riese-Moraine. Exposing ambitious careerists as charlatans since 1986. (East, Friday, 10 June 2005 00:17 (twenty years ago)

Spot on, Dee. xpost

Ian Riese-Moraine. Exposing ambitious careerists as charlatans since 1986. (East, Friday, 10 June 2005 00:18 (twenty years ago)

The lady from the Motels sounds as good as she did in 1982, methinks! She's going to do Norah Jones, that'll be intriguing.

Vanilla Ice is going to crack me up.

Ian Riese-Moraine. Exposing ambitious careerists as charlatans since 1986. (East, Friday, 10 June 2005 00:20 (twenty years ago)

OMG. I'm shivering. Martha Davis's voice -- still liquid gold. I'm intently watching this performance, my attentions devoted mostly to the TV set instead of to the computer screen. (I'm typing this while watching this amazing performance.) Okay -- they, as another female-led rock group from the '80s might put it, took my breath away. Their cover? Norah Jones's "Don't Know Why", which Martha Davis should totally pwn a la Arrested Development's interpretation of that Los Lonely Boys song they did.

(ha ha ha, xpostage!)

Ian, you and me seem to be of one mind here. Yay!

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 10 June 2005 00:21 (twenty years ago)

My mother didn't like the performance of "Only the Lonely" because it was too slow! Meh.

Ian Riese-Moraine. Exposing ambitious careerists as charlatans since 1986. (East, Friday, 10 June 2005 00:22 (twenty years ago)

Oh my. I'm shaking in anticipation. I'm going to expect the worst from Vanilla Ice.

Ian Riese-Moraine. Exposing ambitious careerists as charlatans since 1986. (East, Friday, 10 June 2005 00:25 (twenty years ago)

I'm reacting with stunned horror to Vanilla Ice, or I'm horrifyingly stunned. Oh. My.

Ian Riese-Moraine. Exposing ambitious careerists as charlatans since 1986. (East, Friday, 10 June 2005 00:28 (twenty years ago)

Destiny Child's "Survivor"! WHOA.

Ian Riese-Moraine. Exposing ambitious careerists as charlatans since 1986. (East, Friday, 10 June 2005 00:28 (twenty years ago)

Aw, Mrs. Riese-Moraine, that's just because of time constraints, I'm thinking.

OH MY DEAR LORD. Vanilla Ice's "performance" should make Haddaway's look like a classy Luther Vandross 'do. But we'll see. Okay, first off, he looks eerily like Eminem's older brother, which he sorta is, musically at least. Okay, I'm kinda surprised at how fun this is to watch! First off, his "crew" is actually giving him a surprising amount of credibility, I *think*. (I don't know -- I wasn't the kind of kid to listen to Snoop Dogg or Dr. Dre, but I *was* aware of their ilk, so, well, yeah.) Anyway. Not bad. What's the cover? Destiny's Child's "Survivor"?? Well. We'll just have to see.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 10 June 2005 00:28 (twenty years ago)

Ha ha ha ha, Ian, we totally did not see eye to eye here!!! But, then again, I'm not a rap fan by any stretch of the imagination, so, well, yeah.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 10 June 2005 00:29 (twenty years ago)

Actually, no, we did. It was pretty fun, but I still can't decided whether or not I should be in stunned horror at that or if I should be (horrifyingly) stunned.

Ian Riese-Moraine. Exposing ambitious careerists as charlatans since 1986. (East, Friday, 10 June 2005 00:32 (twenty years ago)

Ian Riese-Moraine. Exposing ambitious careerists as charlatans since 1986. (East, Friday, 10 June 2005 00:32 (twenty years ago)

GO, The Knack, GO! YES!

Ian Riese-Moraine. Exposing ambitious careerists as charlatans since 1986. (East, Friday, 10 June 2005 00:33 (twenty years ago)

Ooh, okay, time for covers! Let's see how well The Knack do with the Jet song.

Starting off really tight. REALLY tight. They're REALLY doing a good job with this song. I'm amazed. Simply amazed. Wow. I'm loving just about everything about this. Wow. That was GOOD.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 10 June 2005 00:35 (twenty years ago)

Woof, why did the Knack's singer try to sing that song in its original key.

HADDAWAY OH YES.

What song did he sing earlier (do I need to ask?).

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 10 June 2005 00:36 (twenty years ago)

No, you don't need to ask.

Ian Riese-Moraine. Exposing ambitious careerists as charlatans since 1986. (East, Friday, 10 June 2005 00:37 (twenty years ago)

Considering that this is a Britney Spears song, Haddaway's making it digestible. I'm not embarrassed for him at all now.

Ian Riese-Moraine. Exposing ambitious careerists as charlatans since 1986. (East, Friday, 10 June 2005 00:38 (twenty years ago)

Next up -- Haddaway with Britney. Which he might actually make better, because, let's face it, how much worse could it go?

Okay, this ain't half bad, but only because it's sounding more like a parody of really bad teen pop than anything that's even remotely attempting to be credible or sellable. If this were an SNL skit, it would really be the most awesome comedy bit ever done on American TV. Dear Lord, I'm so happy that's over.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 10 June 2005 00:38 (twenty years ago)

You know, as much as Tommy Tutone's Blink 182 cover sounds obviously like forty-year-olds trying to be hip, I'd actually rather hear this over the original any day.

Ian Riese-Moraine. Exposing ambitious careerists as charlatans since 1986. (East, Friday, 10 June 2005 00:41 (twenty years ago)

Now it's Tommy "leader's now a computer geek" Tutone with Blink 182.

OH MY GOD. So embarrassing!!! It's fun, sure, but -- I'm sorta recoiling in horror at what the lead singer is trying to do. It's like the musical equivalent of one of those fiftysomething guys who tries to act like a teenager, with a muscle car and baggy pants. Dear Lord. I'm cringing on Tommy Tutone's behalf.

(xpost) Ian, you are totally OTM there.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 10 June 2005 00:41 (twenty years ago)

"Toxic" didn't sound right ... his voice went down in pitch between the verses and the chorus, which made the chorus sound lifeless.

Tommy Tutone is winning this thing by a mile (so far).

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 10 June 2005 00:42 (twenty years ago)

Woof, why did the Knack's singer try to sing that song in its original key.

Hey! I loved Doug's singing on the Jet song! Then again, I will remind the audience (heh) that I actually like The Knack (which seems to be a punishable offense here on ILM) and am pretty pro-Doug Feiger.

The Motels's cover should prove to be insanely awesome. I can't wait.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 10 June 2005 00:44 (twenty years ago)

it just reminded me of how good "small things" is. he was being too silly with it, when with a song that much fun you've gotta play it somehow dead serious.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 10 June 2005 00:44 (twenty years ago)

Dee and I seem to think The Knack are winning -- but let's see what happens with The Motels.

I don't know, I think "All the Small Things" is one of the most throwaway songs ever recorded. It's always been horrifying to me. xpost

Ian Riese-Moraine. Exposing ambitious careerists as charlatans since 1986. (East, Friday, 10 June 2005 00:46 (twenty years ago)

WOW! (Motels)

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 10 June 2005 00:47 (twenty years ago)

Motels pwn this thing!

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 10 June 2005 00:48 (twenty years ago)

THIS IS MY NEW FAVORITE SHOW. just tuning into to the ilx recap...

PeopleFunnyBoy (PeopleFunnyBoy), Friday, 10 June 2005 00:48 (twenty years ago)

Martha Davis is one of the coolest people on the planet. Certifiably.

Now for the Norah Jones. OMG. They're reinterpreting this song!!! This song sounds seriously awesome now! I love what they've done to this song! I'm having the time of my life watching them perform this song this way!! And while Martha Davis isn't exactly challenging herself vocally, she totally kicked Norah Jones's ass.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 10 June 2005 00:49 (twenty years ago)

OH MY GOD NO WAY.

PeopleFunnyBoy (PeopleFunnyBoy), Friday, 10 June 2005 00:49 (twenty years ago)

Yay Martha Davis! YES! I'll be so upset if she doesn't win.

Here goes Vanilla Ice!

Ian Riese-Moraine. Exposing ambitious careerists as charlatans since 1986. (East, Friday, 10 June 2005 00:49 (twenty years ago)

uh, wait, wtf? "new lyrics" = D D D D D D D

PeopleFunnyBoy (PeopleFunnyBoy), Friday, 10 June 2005 00:50 (twenty years ago)

Van Winkle, you're embarassing yourself.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 10 June 2005 00:50 (twenty years ago)

oh, this is SO embarrassing.

PeopleFunnyBoy (PeopleFunnyBoy), Friday, 10 June 2005 00:50 (twenty years ago)

i didnt think it was possible for vanilla ice to lose credibility, and yet somehow he has done just that.

PeopleFunnyBoy (PeopleFunnyBoy), Friday, 10 June 2005 00:51 (twenty years ago)

OH NO HE DI'NT WITH THE DANCE MOVES.

PeopleFunnyBoy (PeopleFunnyBoy), Friday, 10 June 2005 00:51 (twenty years ago)

It's a musical trainwreck and I can't quit staring at it.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 10 June 2005 00:51 (twenty years ago)

Seriously, if the Motels don't win, something's wrong.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 10 June 2005 00:52 (twenty years ago)

Only one word can describe that dancing: WTF.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 10 June 2005 00:52 (twenty years ago)

Next up with Vanilla Ice doing "Survivor". And I'm horrified at how good it is. I'm looking at my bedroom window to see if the sky is falling, because Vanilla Ice is... well... wow. He almost sounds credible and up-to-date. OMG. I SO don't want to like this, but I am. And I kinda feel dirty about it.

Still, I'm steadfast in my belief that The Motels are this week's Arrested Development, i.e. the group of musicians who did the most amazing job with both their original song AND the cover they performed. And if The Motels don't win this thing this week, there is no justice.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 10 June 2005 00:53 (twenty years ago)

omfg vanilla ice made the icy hot stuntaz come true.

this is a sad day for rap.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 10 June 2005 00:53 (twenty years ago)

Actually, Vanilla Ice will probably win, so I won't be expecting The Motels to. (xpost way up to my last one)

Okay, this is pretty damn funny!

Ian Riese-Moraine. Exposing ambitious careerists as charlatans since 1986. (East, Friday, 10 June 2005 00:53 (twenty years ago)

i vote motels, but have a weird sinking feeling about the Ice.

PeopleFunnyBoy (PeopleFunnyBoy), Friday, 10 June 2005 00:54 (twenty years ago)

Wait a minute, there were new lyrics with "Survivor"???? Uh, ixnay on what I just said, thanks. Except for the whole Motels bit.

Wah, I don't want Vanilla Ice to win!! I want The Motels to!! They most deserve it!! Wah wah wah wah waaaaaaaaaaaah.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 10 June 2005 00:54 (twenty years ago)

how could people vote for THAT!?!!?

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 10 June 2005 00:54 (twenty years ago)

hubris involved w/ Vanilla Ice terming himself a "Survivor" = hubris in R. Kelly "U Saved Me".

PeopleFunnyBoy (PeopleFunnyBoy), Friday, 10 June 2005 00:55 (twenty years ago)

i vote motels, but have a weird sinking feeling about the Ice.

I do too. People can be stupid if given the chance.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 10 June 2005 00:55 (twenty years ago)

i don't think it even qualified as rapping.

his rhyming skills have actually gotten worse with time.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 10 June 2005 00:55 (twenty years ago)

Sophie B. Hawkins
Howard Jones
Irene Cara
Cameo
and... who was the other one? I forgot already.

x-post Oh right! Wang Chung.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 10 June 2005 00:59 (twenty years ago)

Or Cameo! Either/or. xpost to myself

Ian Riese-Moraine. Exposing ambitious careerists as charlatans since 1986. (East, Friday, 10 June 2005 00:59 (twenty years ago)

I just changed the channel. And I think we should do what Ian said -- "in retaliation we should all buy Motels albums". We should try to get The Motels in the charts. And show those stupidheads who were truly the most awesome and deserving in the bunch.

Mrs. Riese-Moraine et. al. -- I liked The Knack a lot and would not have been disappointed in their winning.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 10 June 2005 01:00 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, let's get some Knack, too, while we're at it.

Ian Riese-Moraine. Exposing ambitious careerists as charlatans since 1986. (East, Friday, 10 June 2005 01:01 (twenty years ago)

well, i dont know that i'm that emotionally invested in the motels.

PeopleFunnyBoy (PeopleFunnyBoy), Friday, 10 June 2005 01:02 (twenty years ago)

I heard on another forum what Howard Jones was going to do. According to an '80s artist newsletter, HoJo will be performing his own "No One Is To Blame" and a cover of Dido's "White Flag". Which I am insanely pleased about because, hey, class all the way. I'm also beyond psyched about Wang Chung because, hey, I love the 'Chung. Except for their huge, massive "Everybody Have Fun Tonight" song. That one I don't particularly care for. But "Dance Hall Days"? "Let's Go"? "Don't Be My Enemy"? "To Live And Die In L.A."? Hey, bring 'em on.

*sighs and mutters something along the lines of, "Damn it, The Motels should've won!"*

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 10 June 2005 01:03 (twenty years ago)

Ian: You speak wisely.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 10 June 2005 01:04 (twenty years ago)

Except for that last bit, which was groanarrific. ;)

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 10 June 2005 01:05 (twenty years ago)

Hmm, tres interessant about the newsletter, Dee!

I know, I know, it was terrible...

Ian Riese-Moraine. Exposing ambitious careerists as charlatans since 1986. (East, Friday, 10 June 2005 01:06 (twenty years ago)

Dee! Apparently the only Motels album in print (aside from compilations) is Little Robbers. That bites.

Ian Riese-Moraine. Exposing ambitious careerists as charlatans since 1986. (East, Friday, 10 June 2005 01:09 (twenty years ago)

Ian! Amazon has more Motels albums to offer than just Little Robbers! That is lots better.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 10 June 2005 01:26 (twenty years ago)

Uh, oops. I overlooked your "aside from compilations" aside. Which, well, yeah, most of these offerings are compilations. Hm. Maybe Half.com has a more promising list?

(Also: I have that Missing Persons/Motels dual comp.)

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 10 June 2005 01:28 (twenty years ago)

Missing Persons and Motels compilation? Word.

Ian Riese-Moraine. Exposing ambitious careerists as charlatans since 1986. (East, Friday, 10 June 2005 01:50 (twenty years ago)

Thank you, Motels, for helping me actually dig a Norah Jones song.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 10 June 2005 15:15 (twenty years ago)

someone should trash the host, who is the only thing I don't like about the show. who is this guy, and how did he get this job?

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 10 June 2005 15:17 (twenty years ago)

He hosted the UK version and came along with the show to the US much like Simon did with American Idol.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 10 June 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

Somehow that just isn't enough to justify his having this job.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 10 June 2005 15:21 (twenty years ago)

CAMEO IS PERFORMING "1985" BY BOWLING FOR SOUP.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 10 June 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

I'm watching!

Sophie B. Hawkins doing Five For Fighting - "A Hundred Years". I don't have an opinion on her, but my mother wonders if she's a lesbian.

Ian Riese-Moraine: exposing ambitious careerists as charlatans since 1986. (East, Friday, 17 June 2005 00:11 (twenty years ago)

Sophie B. Hawkins' cover selection seems appropriate for her. UNLIKE FUCKING WANG CHUNG WITH THEIR "THEY MUST BE JOKING" SELECTION.

I'm on tenterhooks waiting for Howard Jones, BTW. I haven't been as excited about seeing an artist as I've been about seeing HoJo. He has GOT to rule the "HMBOMT" school. But first, Cameo.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 17 June 2005 00:13 (twenty years ago)

"Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover" was written about a woman. That was a not-so-well kept secret at the time.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 17 June 2005 00:14 (twenty years ago)

OH DEAR LORD, THEY MUST BE JOKING.

(xpost) I knew that already. I found that out years and years ago. Eh.

I'm not sure how my mother didn't know that.

CAMEO'S GONNA DO BOWLING FOR SOUP!

Ian Riese-Moraine: exposing ambitious careerists as charlatans since 1986. (East, Friday, 17 June 2005 00:16 (twenty years ago)

I'm rooting for either Cameo or HoJo.

Ian Riese-Moraine: exposing ambitious careerists as charlatans since 1986. (East, Friday, 17 June 2005 00:17 (twenty years ago)

Heh @ Ian's mom.

OMG. My heart's in my throat right now. I love Howard Jones. I will so die inside if he screws things up tonight. HOWARD JONES! *cries*

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 17 June 2005 00:17 (twenty years ago)

NO! Damn, why is he going to do a slow song! Bad choice, HoJo. He'll pull it off, though.

Ian Riese-Moraine: exposing ambitious careerists as charlatans since 1986. (East, Friday, 17 June 2005 00:18 (twenty years ago)

OMG WHAT KIND OF HAIRSTYLE IS THAT. (Howard Jones)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 17 June 2005 00:18 (twenty years ago)

Okay, nevermind my complaint about him doing a slow song.

Ian Riese-Moraine: exposing ambitious careerists as charlatans since 1986. (East, Friday, 17 June 2005 00:20 (twenty years ago)

Howard's "White Flag" should be pretty decent. I'll just have to look away while he's on screen.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 17 June 2005 00:20 (twenty years ago)

Aw. I love the way he looks right now. He's got a more mature, older-man sort of approximation of what he was doing hair-wise in the '80s. And I love that he did "No One Is To Blame" AND is going to do a Dido track. OMG. I'm crying right now. That's the HoJo I love! Gotta grab me some tissues now.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 17 June 2005 00:21 (twenty years ago)

Okay, this is getting embarrassing, all this crying. Breathe in, breathe out.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 17 June 2005 00:22 (twenty years ago)

(the following comment is for my own reference ... I will need to jog my memory when I reread this thread in six months)

Howard Jones styled his seriously balding, unnaturally bleached blond hair into the shape of a tiny pyramid.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 17 June 2005 00:23 (twenty years ago)

Irene Cara next!

Ian Riese-Moraine: exposing ambitious careerists as charlatans since 1986. (East, Friday, 17 June 2005 00:24 (twenty years ago)

Next up -- the woman who got her start on PBS's "The Electric Company"! Yeah, remember that show? Anyway -- Irene Cara! She should do really well too, unless her voice has totally gone since her early '80s halcyon days.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 17 June 2005 00:25 (twenty years ago)

Ha ha ha. That was an xpost.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 17 June 2005 00:25 (twenty years ago)

Her voice has PARTLY gone. So her performance was PARTLY flat.

Anastacia! Another appropriate selection. UNLIKE THAT FUCKING WANG CHUNG SELECTION WHICH I COULD KILL THEM FOR. WHY OH WHY DO THEY WANT TO DO SOMETHING THAT "TRENDY"?!?!?!

Again, breathe in, breathe out.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 17 June 2005 00:29 (twenty years ago)

Irene Cara sounded great until it became obvious that she couldn't come close to hitting the high notes during the chorus, and at that point, the song was ruined ... and she's going to cover Anastacia? With those near-Marianne Faithful pipes?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 17 June 2005 00:29 (twenty years ago)

She got her start on The Electric Company? I didn't realise that!

Ian Riese-Moraine: exposing ambitious careerists as charlatans since 1986. (East, Friday, 17 June 2005 00:29 (twenty years ago)

Oh my, this is going to be so absurdist.

Ian Riese-Moraine: exposing ambitious careerists as charlatans since 1986. (East, Friday, 17 June 2005 00:33 (twenty years ago)

WHY AM I NOT RECORDING THIS PERFORMANCE SO THAT I CAN LAUGH AT IT FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 17 June 2005 00:34 (twenty years ago)

My brother thinks their cover sounds like Junior Senior! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Ian Riese-Moraine: exposing ambitious careerists as charlatans since 1986. (East, Friday, 17 June 2005 00:34 (twenty years ago)

Barry -- well, if she doesn't do well on the cover version, it can't be chalked up to a bad cover selection.

Ian -- yeah, she did. I found that out on, oddly enough, a disco special PBS was airing. I say "oddly enough" because, hey, disco special and PBS does not usually compute.

Oh. My. God. Wang Chung's cover is just as cringe-inducing as I thought it'd be. I'm red-faced on their behalf.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 17 June 2005 00:34 (twenty years ago)

This is so horrible and ridiculous that it's actually good. I want to kick off mix tapes with this version.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 17 June 2005 00:35 (twenty years ago)

Dee -- I was referring to the "Hot In Herre" cover.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 17 June 2005 00:35 (twenty years ago)

Sophie B. Hawkins reminds me of Chyna Kantner.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 17 June 2005 00:36 (twenty years ago)

Proof of my mother's nuttiness -- she thought it was truly fantastic.

Ian Riese-Moraine: exposing ambitious careerists as charlatans since 1986. (East, Friday, 17 June 2005 00:36 (twenty years ago)

I wish I could take out my brain and scrub it after experiencing... that.

Not the Sophie B. Hawkins piece, mind. This seems pretty cool. I'm anticipating what she'll do to "One Hundred Years".

(xpostage)

Barry -- I was responding to what you said about Irene Cara. I totally understood which posts you made about the "Hot In Herre" cover.

OH my GOD. Sophie B. Hawkins is totally making Five For Fighting sound like the lightweights they are! "One Hundred Years" has SOUL! Can you believe it?

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 17 June 2005 00:37 (twenty years ago)

Is it good or bad that I only know "One Hundred Years" as a song from a credit card commercial?

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 17 June 2005 00:38 (twenty years ago)

Wow. If it wasn't for Howard Jones coming up later, they could turn off the lights and send everybody home because SBH has laid down quite the gauntlet.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 17 June 2005 00:39 (twenty years ago)

Oh, I didn't realise what Sophie B. Hawkins was covering until the end of the song, and then my mother and I were like -- "Hey, that's that song on that commercial that sounds like Eddie Vedder and Dave Matthews!"

I can believe it, Dee! She seemed rather Janis Joplin-esque!

Ian Riese-Moraine: exposing ambitious careerists as charlatans since 1986. (East, Friday, 17 June 2005 00:39 (twenty years ago)

Johnny, it's good. I'm glad I only know it from there and haven't heard it anywhere else.

Ian Riese-Moraine: exposing ambitious careerists as charlatans since 1986. (East, Friday, 17 June 2005 00:41 (twenty years ago)

Dee -- oh, I understand you now. However, I still disagree somewhat ... Anastacia does have a husky voice, but she can deliver the notes strong and clear when she has to. Irene Cara sounded totally winded at the end of "Flashdance". We'll see, though!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 17 June 2005 00:41 (twenty years ago)

My thoughts right now: "I'm going to have to sit through Cameo's cover to get to the Howard Jones one. I'm going to have to be patient and wait just a little bit longer." Heh. Methinks I should get myself to a HoJo concert STAT. So I can have easy access to some songs that will make me bawl my fucking eyes out. "'What Is Love?'! 'Pearl In The Shell'! 'Like To Get To Know You Well'! 'Everlasting Love'! SCREAM!"

(xpost)

Well, Barry, we will indeed have to wait and see. But yeah, I totally agree with you and Ian there -- Sophie totally kicked ass with her cover. She injected a lot of heart and passion into a song that previously only sounded (to me, at least) like a lame Dave Matthews Band b-side.

Cameo's doing pretty well with the Bowling For Soup cover. :)

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 17 June 2005 00:44 (twenty years ago)

Impossible! Cameo made me like "1985."

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 17 June 2005 00:44 (twenty years ago)

Johnny Fever OTM. And Ian too.

Maya Rudolph should play Irene Cara in an SNL skit.

All female musicians for Irene Cara's performance! Nifty!

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 17 June 2005 00:51 (twenty years ago)

My thoughts right now: "Howard Jones is JUST TOO GOOD to be on a program like this." Which is highly unfair, but -- he sounds SO GOOD. So polished, so classy, so -- I don't know. But AD were polished and classy too and they also appeared on this program, so....

I think Irene Cara's doing some major-league cheating by getting those two other singers to help her out with the cover song. You can't even tell how much of her performance is actually hers and how much she's relying on the other singers.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 17 June 2005 00:51 (twenty years ago)

I can't think of Irene Cara without thinking of hair salons.

Ian Riese-Moraine: exposing ambitious careerists as charlatans since 1986. (East, Friday, 17 June 2005 00:52 (twenty years ago)

Really, the only time I've ever heard her was in a hair salon my father worked at.

I hate the studio audience so fucking much. Part two.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 17 June 2005 00:57 (twenty years ago)

I think Irene Cara's doing some major-league cheating by getting those two other singers to help her out with the cover song.

Absolutely OTM. During the verses, the other girls sang the higher notes and I couldn't hear Cara's voice at all during the chorus, so I'm fairly sure she was singing in a lower register and letting the others do all the real work.

And I can't believe the audience bought that crap over SBH and Howard Jones.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 17 June 2005 00:58 (twenty years ago)

How the hell? I don't. Fucking. Get it. That was so unexpected and unbelievably disappointing. If there was anyone I figured wouldn't win, it was her.

Ian Riese-Moraine: exposing ambitious careerists as charlatans since 1986. (East, Friday, 17 June 2005 00:59 (twenty years ago)

I want the studio audience who voted on Arrested Development the first week to come back over and over again, because the rest of the people they're letting in are chuckleheads who are tone-deaf and FUCKING STUPID OH I HATE YOU YOU FUCKING GIMPS.

Artists I would have happily accepted: Sophie B. Hawkins, Cameo, HoJo (obv). They deserved to win. SO FUCK YOU YOU FUCKING STUPID FUCKING STUDIO AUDIENCE. Aaaaaaaargh.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 17 June 2005 00:59 (twenty years ago)

I'm pretty sure if we all went to a taping together, a riot would break out by show's end.

the reaction to Cameo's version of '1985' on this thread has been so far totally disappointing. they wuz robbed.

PeopleFunnyBoy (PeopleFunnyBoy), Friday, 17 June 2005 02:34 (twenty years ago)

I haven't seen this show yet, but it seems as though they've made it a point to avoid Hung-like embarrassments (i.e., no bands who show themselves utterly incapable of rendering a respectable song). Is this the case?

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Friday, 17 June 2005 04:21 (twenty years ago)

no bands who show themselves utterly incapable of rendering a respectable song

Too bad you missed Vanilla Ice.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 17 June 2005 04:32 (twenty years ago)

Next time ...

Baha Men = "Who Let the Dogs Out?"
Glass Tiger = "Don't Forget Me ..." (More Canadian content! Is Corey Hart, Men Without Hats, Alannah Myles ... next??)
Greg Kihn = "The Breakup Song" (Wasn't "Jeopardy" a bigger hit for him? I mean, Weird Al parodied it!)

and I assume someone backed out because the fifth guest is "Coming soon" ...

http://www.nbc.com/nbc/Hit_Me_Baby/

My quick two cents:

Wang Chung did a better job on their cover song than their 'hit'.
Sophie B. looks even better now than she did then and she still has a great voice.
HJ, the Buddhist, is now, as then, just kinda out of step with it all - talented, certainly, but ...

Matt Sab (Matt Sab), Friday, 17 June 2005 12:39 (twenty years ago)

Wang Chung really did a great "Hot in Herre". I couldn't believe it.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Friday, 17 June 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

This last episode kind of reaffirmed my complete and utter antipathy for Sophie B. Hawkins. She is very pretty, though. Totally agree about Wang Chung (even though a large part of me wishes they'd done "Fire In The Twilight" what with the 20th anniversary of "The Breakfast Club"). Cameo was completely and utterly robbed and POOR IRENE CARA.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 17 June 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

"Jeopardy" might have been a bigger hit for Kihn, but there's no question that "The Breakup Song" is a better song. I look forward to hearing it.

I wish the NBC site was still revealing what each group's cover choice would be, but I kind of like the surprise too. I'm torn.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 17 June 2005 15:12 (twenty years ago)

Are any of these performances going to be released as singles? I'm swoony for Sophie and would love to hear what she did with "100 Years" but lack a TV.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Friday, 17 June 2005 15:17 (twenty years ago)

They might have a clip of each performance on the NBC website.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 17 June 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

OH! They are still listing what some people will cover next week.

Glass Tiger = Vertical Horizon's "Everything You Want" (does that count as a current song?!)
Greg Khin = Green Day's "Boulevard of Broken Dreams"

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 17 June 2005 15:25 (twenty years ago)

All during "100 Years" I kept asking "What the hell song is this? I've never heard this before in my life." Even with the fraame of reference of the commercial (which I have seen) I have no clue as to how the original song goes.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 17 June 2005 15:27 (twenty years ago)

I had no idea what song it was until she did that little recognizable part at the end. I was like "American Express!"

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 17 June 2005 15:30 (twenty years ago)

Haha I was still all "I have never ever heard this song before". My wife actually sang that bit at me 15 seconds into the song as she tried to prove that it had some impact on my consciousness but I still didn't recognize it.

Also she's a horrible singer.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 17 June 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

Your wife or Sophie B?

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 17 June 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)

Glass Tiger = Vertical Horizon's "Everything You Want" (does that count as a current song?!)

FUCKING AWESOME

and Tommy Tutone did "All The Small Things," which is even older.

Sophie B! My wife throws down on opera.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 17 June 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

Oh that's right! Work brain, work.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 17 June 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

I thought that Howard Jones was the most solid over all, but Wang Chung did the best cover version.

Sophie B. Hawkins was sorta disapointing. To sell "Damn..." she needed to be more sultry, less hippie chick.

Randy Reiss (undeadsinatra), Friday, 17 June 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

"Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover" was never that good a song to begin with.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 17 June 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

That song would be nothing without the drum sample ... I always thought the melody was turgid, although her delivery is certainly impassioned. Anyway, I'm not trying to start a debate, I'm just explaining my comment.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 17 June 2005 16:15 (twenty years ago)

It seems that whoever sings last wins! Because Irene Cara and Vanilla Ice did not deserve to win over Wang Chung, Cameo and some of those other bands I can't remember.

Stoner dude, Friday, 17 June 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

HOWARD JONES! HOWARD JONES! Though he's a "he" instead of a band.

And Sophie B. Hawkins!

Good God, you ARE a stoner dude, aren't you? ;)

Anyway. This thread inspired me to listen to some HoJo today. I have Human's Lib and Dream Into Action on CD, so I took both of them with me as I went out to work. I totally forgot just how kickass "Conditioning" is, and how swoonable "What Is Love?" is. And -- "New Song"! Produced by Colin Thurston! Duran Duran's producer! Um.

Sooo... how 'bout the next ep of this program, huh? Glass Tiger AND Greg Kihn! I'm glad Greg Kihn is doing "The Breakup Song" because that was a LOT better than "Jeopardy". And Glass Tiger's "Don't Forget Me When I'm Gone" is a huge guilty pleasure of mine. Thelma Houston should kick ass. And I wonder who else they're going to get to be on the program.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Saturday, 18 June 2005 01:50 (twenty years ago)

Baha Men and an act to be determined later. Is it too soon for Ashlee Simpson to be on this show?

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 18 June 2005 01:58 (twenty years ago)

Duh, Baha Men were mentioned upthread. Hello. Anyway -- so I guess the Baha Men are a bonafide one hit wonder then, huh? Only had the one in them? I wonder which act decided not to be a part of the program. I should try to look up stories about this program from before the first episode's airing, to see if any acts mentioned haven't been mentioned in this thread.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Saturday, 18 June 2005 03:15 (twenty years ago)

Okay, so I looked up more information -- apparently the whole series was just going to run three episodes, but now the thing is being expanded to at least one, if not up to three, episodes! So that's why there are less than five people being mentioned for the next ep -- these are the add-ons. Okay. This is cool. I could certainly hook my claws into this show for more weeks to come. And if they chose to do another round of episodes, that'd be cool too. Just don't expect me to be a fan of the studio audience. ;)

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Saturday, 18 June 2005 03:35 (twenty years ago)

For Don't Forget Me, Glass Tiger ought to bribe Bryan Adams to surprise leap out of a box (possibly in a banana suit) to reprise his chorus bits.

Kim (Kim), Saturday, 18 June 2005 22:27 (twenty years ago)

Greg Kihn rocked it pretty well, I think. Like he's never gone away.

Club Nouveau should have practiced a bit more.

Glass Tiger coming up.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 24 June 2005 00:14 (twenty years ago)

glass tiger dude looking pretty good!

teeny (teeny), Friday, 24 June 2005 00:15 (twenty years ago)

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 24 June 2005 00:17 (twenty years ago)

He sounds great, though!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 24 June 2005 00:19 (twenty years ago)

Good performance, though, and the crowd's going wild.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 24 June 2005 00:20 (twenty years ago)

This is a disco crowd. Thelma's got a good shot.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 24 June 2005 00:27 (twenty years ago)

She's rocking the chorus too.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 24 June 2005 00:27 (twenty years ago)

I expected more from Thelma - the backing vocalists finished each line of the chorus. Glass Tiger did good, I think - we'll see how the cover goes.

Is everything canned except the vocals?

Kent Burt (lingereffect), Friday, 24 June 2005 00:35 (twenty years ago)

Yay, Thelma won.

I think I'm bored with this show.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 24 June 2005 00:56 (twenty years ago)

Shit, I completely forgot about this program! In all my barbed-wire nervousness about the outcome of tonight's game, I completely neglected to tune in to tonight's episode! Argh. But thank God Bravo reruns these shows -- and after checking on that there on-screen guide thingamabob, I totally see a rerun TONIGHT at 10 p.m. my time! Rock on! AND a rerun of "Queer Eye" after that! But, ahem, different topic altogether. ;)

Now all I've got to do is remember the rerun.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 24 June 2005 01:01 (twenty years ago)

It's okay, Dee. I only watched the last half of it because I was taking a nap and then I didn't get to report on it because my brother was on the computer. I only caught the following covers: Club Nouveau (proved very lacklustre and unnerving), Billy Vera, and Thelma Houston. Thelma blew everyone else away -- she was miles better. It helped that her legs looked as good as Tina Turner's, too.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:08 (twenty years ago)

Wow, they were boring.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:09 (twenty years ago)

It's just the two of them, the guy hasn't changed. The music's canned of course for this song and so muted that their voices stand waaay out in front. The lady sounds like she's doing karaoke, the guy sounds rather decent if a bit extravagant.

Ian Riese-Moraine has been xeroxed into a conduit! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:09 (twenty years ago)

They're covering "Days Go By?" WTF

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:10 (twenty years ago)

She's covering "Foolish" by Ashanti.

PM Dawn's NEXT!

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:17 (twenty years ago)

Ian Riese-Moraine has been xeroxed into a conduit! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:19 (twenty years ago)

PM Dawn should have had Spandau Ballet come out and back them up.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:20 (twenty years ago)

PM Dawn gonna cover Puddle of Mudd WTF?

God, I don't want anyone to win tonight.

Ian Riese-Moraine has been xeroxed into a conduit! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:20 (twenty years ago)

Shannon did much better than that *spit spit spit* FUCKING LOSER IRENE CARA OH I STILL HATE HER CAN YOU TELL, ETC. I won't get past that episode, quite obviously. I mean, you could actually pick out Shannon's voice from the voices of the backup singers, and Shannon actually hit the same high notes she hit in '84, though with a little bit more, er, grit. And she did it all while actually doing some serious moving, yes.

PM Dawn was... well, how could they have messed that one up? Actually, the actual singer guy still has a really good voice, while the rapper guy did start to grate on my nerves with his shoutiness. Part of the point of PM Dawn was that they were supposed to be mellow all around, poet and crooner comined.

Now for commercials. Ugh. Toyota commercials. They make me never want to purchase a Toyota ever in my entire life. I hate those little brats!

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:21 (twenty years ago)

Hi dere. :)

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:22 (twenty years ago)

I really hope Missing Persons RULZ

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:23 (twenty years ago)

NEXT UP -- MISSING PERSONS OMG THIS SHOULD RULE DALE BOZZIO IS ONE OF THE COOLEST ROCK CHICKS IN THE HISTORY OF ROCK. Ha. NOOOO, I'm not at all biased because this is the band that Warren Cuccurullo was a member of prior to his joining you-know-who. ;) Actually, I will on occasion, out of the blue, get "Walking In L.A." stuck in my head. And "Destination Unknown" is SO awesome. And "Words", which is what I think they're going to perform, ain't half bad.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:24 (twenty years ago)

So do I, Johnny Fever.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:24 (twenty years ago)

Well, it's only Dale... but it sounds decent.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:26 (twenty years ago)

I don't know, I've heard about her forgetting the words to "Words" in concert so many times. I'm amazed she's pulling it off at all this time.

Ian Riese-Moraine has been xeroxed into a conduit! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:27 (twenty years ago)

SHE'S GONNA DO "CAN'T GET YOU OUT OF MY HEAD" OMG

Ian Riese-Moraine has been xeroxed into a conduit! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:28 (twenty years ago)

Heh. I could have told you that, Johnny -- it's been the Dale Bozzio & Co. Show for quite awhile. The Missing Persons reunion with Terry Bozzio & Warren Cuccurullo lasted only until the end of 2001; then after that, Dale reverted back to the touring band she's been using to tour the Missing Persons name around. Actually, she has every right to do that, since her voice was the most distinctive part of the band's sound.

Heh. I wonder what Dale & Co. are going to do with a Kylie song.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:28 (twenty years ago)

I still don't want anyone to win tonight, but if I was really pressed to choose, I'd root for Shannon.

Ian Riese-Moraine has been xeroxed into a conduit! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:30 (twenty years ago)

For some reason, I thought Warren and Terry were with her now. I guess I've got no concept of time.

DALE DOING KYLIE OMGWTF

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:31 (twenty years ago)

I do like that she's consistent with her hairstyle. She looked exactly that same way hair-wise back in the late '90s, when VH1 or some other channel caught up with her doing her thing as a wife and mother in Long Island, though it looks like she's gained a few points since that time. But hey, she's probably got teenaged kids -- how many of us remember what our mothers looked like when we were teens?

(xpost) Anyway. I am hoping on Missing Persons, but I won't be too disappointed if they don't get it. I'm adopting a wait-and-see attitude on everyone, actually.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:33 (twenty years ago)

This Ashlee Simpson song sounds weird without falling apart after 10 seconds and an elfin jig breaking out.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:33 (twenty years ago)

(BTW, the "she" in the first paragraph of that last post o' mine? Referring back to Dale Bozzio, obv.)

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:34 (twenty years ago)

This Ashlee Simpson song sounds weird without falling apart after 10 seconds and an elfin jig breaking out.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Juice Newton owns that song now. She does. She is at least 50 million times more talented than Ashlee Simpson, and I don't even LIKE country.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:35 (twenty years ago)

My mother's changed the channel halfway through Juice Newton's cover so I can't comment on it. It didn't seem so terrible to me.

HAHAHA Johnny! xpost

Ian Riese-Moraine has been xeroxed into a conduit! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:35 (twenty years ago)

Here goes Animotion's cover. It's about what I've expected and better than what they did a few minutes ago with "Obsession".

I like that Animotion's now got their original female singer in. For awhile there, the female singer in the group was Cynthia Gibb. I think.

OMG. Animotion are amazing. I thought I'd never say that, but it's true.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:37 (twenty years ago)

Ian, you were right. Animotion just sounds like a bad night at karaoke.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:37 (twenty years ago)

Juice and Animotion can still sing, that's for sure, but their voices didn't mesh with the songs they picked. They sounded like karaoke done really well, i.e. competently sung but very amateurish.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:38 (twenty years ago)

So what would you have accepted from their cover performances, Barry?

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:39 (twenty years ago)

OH DEAR GOD ANOTHER TOYOTA COMMERCIAL FEATURING BRATTY KIDS. Oh yes, for sure I won't purchase a Toyota, not even if that's the only vehicle available to me and my vehicle at present is DEAD.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:40 (twenty years ago)

Anyway. Back to talking about show.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:40 (twenty years ago)

Dee, I don't expect them to pwn the songs, but most performers on this show have done a decent job of picking songs that suit their voices, or altering the music and/or vocal arrangement to fit their style better. I don't think Juice or Animotion did either of those things.

Shannon was great.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:45 (twenty years ago)

Shannon now doing Ashanti. It makes decent background music if nothing else. I'm not very inspired by it but then again I'm feeling cynical today about this lineup.

Oh my, here goes PM Dawn doing "Blurry".

Ian Riese-Moraine has been xeroxed into a conduit! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:46 (twenty years ago)

"...a successful vegetarian?" I think that's what Prince P said.

Puddle of Mudd translates well to and R&B arrangement, methinks.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:46 (twenty years ago)

Awww, giving out flowers, how cute...

Ian Riese-Moraine has been xeroxed into a conduit! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:48 (twenty years ago)

Wow! PM Dawn gets my vote.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:48 (twenty years ago)

I'm not sure I've ever heard the original ... but I can't believe I just enjoyed a Puddle of Mudd song. I'll second Johnny's vote.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:49 (twenty years ago)

I DO NOT like this cover of Kylie.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:50 (twenty years ago)

OTM. Even if it wasn't sung well! xxpost

Oh goodness, here goes Dale and co. -- she's messed up a few snippets of the lyric. It sounds like a terrible parody of Goth music or something.

Barry, the original "Blurry" pales in comparison.

Ian Riese-Moraine has been xeroxed into a conduit! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:51 (twenty years ago)

It'll be Shannon or PM Dawn that wins. Unless the audience is on crack like that night Irena Cara won.

Ian Riese-Moraine has been xeroxed into a conduit! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:52 (twenty years ago)

Speaking of dodgy karaoke ...

A fairly weak episode this week, but it's definitely a two-act race, unless the audience is, as Ian stated, crack-addled.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:54 (twenty years ago)

Yay audience!

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:55 (twenty years ago)

PM Dawn is tha winnah!

Point taken. I guess I automatically expected pretty much almost every single one of these artists to mess up the songs they selected to cover, so I was glad when they sounded pretty good. Actually, I think Animotion could've just made a few tweaks with their "Days Gone By" cover and made it sound like what it is you were looking for.

Missing Persons (well, Dale & Co.) really disappointed me with the Kylie song. I thought for sure they'd do more of an Arrested Development and that Dale would try to tailor the song to what her voice can and does indeed do. But, alas. The people who DID do an Arrested Development tonight, though, i.e. PM Dawn, WON! And I'm so insanely happy for them. I still think the rappers should seriously calm the hell down and just try to sound like they're rattling off poetry, which lends itself mightily to their sound, but the big guy in PM Dawn STILL HAS IT and they actually managed to make a Puddle Of Mudd song sound REALLY, REALLY PRETTY, which is SO great.
