Seeing the recent threads peeking into specific years and their charts leads me to pose this thread:

What year do we all feel was the overall worst year in pop music product and why?

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 22:32 (twenty years ago)

1970

Was all about a very North American idea of "roots" mainly, either country or blues. A boring year that seemed like the 60s and Beatles had never happened. Of course, ever single pre-1963 year was worse, but they just don't count.

ZionTrain (ZionTrain), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 22:57 (twenty years ago)

There is another thread on this, and '85 is what was decided I thought.

maybe tantrum's right, every year is the best and worst in pop music

but only while you're living it, right?

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 23:05 (twenty years ago)

crazy, crying, cupid--61 is the greatest year in history for one-word songs beginning with "c"!

dan (dan), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 23:11 (twenty years ago)

I'm sure someone could list 100 reasons why I'm wrong, but '74 doesn't strike me as a strong year in the slightest.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 23:13 (twenty years ago)

1981!!!

There was a period there in '79-'80 when it looked like punk and new wave was going to take over the world! But everything just kinda backed up by '81. I mainly remember it being a year dominated by corporate arena rock (anybody remember Point Blank? Franke & the Knockouts? Chilliwack?), the Commodores, Kenny Rogers, and "Endless Love."

I know Prince and the Time were starting to make some noise, but I'm not into that!! Not really my thing, but startlingly creative compared to everything else on the radio that year.

I can't believe how many times "Sukiyaki" has been taken to the charts.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 01:18 (twenty years ago)

1970 - good call -
the end of the beatles.
the end of the monkees.
before kiss.
before abba.

the beach boys were a saving grace.

mayte's gold hotpants, Wednesday, 15 June 2005 01:46 (twenty years ago)

If you're basing 1981 on the charts there's a world of difference between the UK and US charts, probably the year of least overlap. As far as chart pop goes 81 was one of the better years in the UK, even Motorhead had a top 5 single that year.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 02:03 (twenty years ago)

As a rough estimate only about 30 of those songs from '81 made the UK top 40.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 02:10 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I was just going to post about the US/UK divide for 1981. The year was fantastic for synth-pop/New Pop/etc. and that's the stuff we REMEMBER from the year thanks to MTV but scott's list reminds us that America was much more into Air Supply than ABC that year.

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 02:27 (twenty years ago)

1981 was the year that I became an active radio listener rather than someone who was just aware of music in the room. I was already a Beatles fanatic by that point, but during that year I heavily gravitated to Marty Balin's "Hearts," Sheena Easton's "Morning Train," Air Supply's "The One That You Love," and ABBA's "The Winner Takes It All." Paul Davis's "'65 Love Affair" and Benny Mardones's "Into the Night" would follow soon afterwards. I've maintained a near-inexplicable appreciation of soft-rock ever since. Which makes 1981 a classic as far as I'm concerned.

P.S. Sorry to veer, but: It took about 5 years for me to realize that the guy who sang "Hearts" and the guy who was in the Jefferson Airplane/Starship were the same guy. A 45s record clerk in the hopelessly rural town of Lincoln Boro, PA pointed this out to me when I was about 14 and I am still grateful to him.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 03:59 (twenty years ago)

As far as '81 being a terrible year for music...
(1) I'm basing my information on the US charts mainly because I'm FROM THERE :-)

(2) Going by what I heard and read about, the UK wasn't any better - Adam Ant and that New Romantic shite isn't really my thing (besides, another couple of years and soon the ABC's would be easing the REO's off the charts anyway)

Rev. Hoodoo (Rev. Hoodoo), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 07:29 (twenty years ago)

the beach boys were a saving grace.

And, by 1970, nobody was aware that they had indeed released a marvellous album that year, as nobody had any interest in paying attention to Beach Boys at that time.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 08:31 (twenty years ago)

i dunno, 1981 might take it chartwise(U.S. & U.K.). check out the top 50 singles in the u.k. in 1982 first: http://www.onmc.iinet.net.au/UK/uk82.htm

and then go to 1981. 1982 was much stronger.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 09:50 (twenty years ago)

as can be evinced from my comprehensive overview.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 09:57 (twenty years ago)

'71?

To be honest I don't like the last couple of years of the 60s much.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 10:09 (twenty years ago)

Really? I have an acknowledged soft spot for '68 and '69. How come?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 10:26 (twenty years ago)

and the U.S. charts were WAY better in 1982 too. it took that long to get rid of that 70's love hangover.the 80's had begun. http://www.spunoutcentral.com/1982top40.html

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 10:33 (twenty years ago)

1981 was an excellent year in the UK. Sort of the definite breakthrough for New Romantics and synthpop.

The US charts were still Olivia Newton-John and Christopher Cross by 1981, so I guess 1981 might have seemed a pretty weak year over there.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 10:35 (twenty years ago)

how the heck did cliff richard do better than junior's near-perfect "mama used to say"??? i demand a recount!

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 10:38 (twenty years ago)

Even though "Wired For Sound" was possibly his best single ever, UK 1981 was about much more than Cliff Richard.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 10:39 (twenty years ago)

So far 2005 is well on the way to being the worst year for pop, at least in my lifetime.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 10:43 (twenty years ago)

"Mama Used To Say" was a UK hit in 1982. It charted higher than any of Cliff's singles that year.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 10:44 (twenty years ago)

To be honest I don't like the last couple of years of the 60s much.

I love 1968, at least in terms of albums. 1969-71 was a pretty weak period, since most rock bands were way too fixated on country and blues. The first great prog records were still released during that era though (plus a couple of great Beach Boys albums that are finally getting the attention they would have deserved already back then)

Ennio Morricone- Chi Mai (Theme From TV Series The Life And Times Of David Lloyd George)

Was this much of a hit in the clubs?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 10:50 (twenty years ago)

Heh heh...I can envision 40 posters and 40 different years!

Speaking strictly of pop charts/radio, I say 1986. Here's the good:

The Cult, "She Sells Sanctuary"
Robert Palmer, "Addicted To Love"
Fine Young Cannibals, "Johnny Come Home"
Bangles, "Manic Monday"
Sly Fox, "Let's Go All The Way"
Prince, "Kiss"
Pet Shop Boys, "West End Girls"
Kenny Loggins, "Danger Zone"
Pointer Sisters, "Goldmine"
Janet Jackson, "Nasty"
Timex Social Club, "Rumors"
Take My Breath Away - Berlin
Tarzan Boy - Baltimora
Walk This Way - Run-D.M.C.
Two Of Hearts - Stacey Q
Word Up - Cameo
David & David - Welcome To The Boomtown
Prince, "Mountains"
Teena Marie, "Lips To Find You"
Smithereens, "Behind The Wall Of Sleep"

Everything else sucks, or close enough.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 10:52 (twenty years ago)

1986 was better than the couple of years that followed.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 10:52 (twenty years ago)

""Mama Used To Say" was a UK hit in 1982. It charted higher than any of Cliff's singles that year."

yeah, i was talking about 1982. cliff beat out junior on the u.s. charts with something called "daddy's home". i didn't even know that cliff richard was on the american top 40 in 1982.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 10:55 (twenty years ago)

"Daddy's Home" was his big Xmas hit of '81 over here. It was kept off number one by "Don't You Want Me" which I thought was only fair.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 10:57 (twenty years ago)

It was a live recording - a cover of the old Shep and the Limelites doowop tune (Tony Rivers on harmony vocals, St Et fans).

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 10:57 (twenty years ago)

1967.

AaronK (AaronK), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 11:13 (twenty years ago)

1967 the worst? Is he wrong?

Wait until Popular gets round to '67! He may be right!!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 11:18 (twenty years ago)

Hopefully not too long a wait. :(

I need to research 68 and 69 a bit more before I know whether there's anything more than a vague hunch behind my feeling of not liking them. It was kind of a golden age for Proper Rock Stars and they've never shaken my coconuts too much. Looking at the Top 20 singles though there seems to have been the usual balance of good and horrid.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 11:28 (twenty years ago)

Album-wise 1968 was a year dominated by a lot of great psychedelic music. At least the first half. Singles-wise, it was not a good vintage though.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 11:32 (twenty years ago)

re: '67

just kidding :)

AaronK (AaronK), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 11:59 (twenty years ago)

I think 1970 is gaining a lot of traction here.

yer crazy, geir. about singles in 1968. unless you are talking about the norwegian charts.

u.s. top 40 artists from 1968:

1970 had tons of great stuff too:

http://www.cylist.com/List/400300160/Billboard_Top_40_Hits__1970_.html

i'm still going with 1981. not NON-chartwise, obviously. cuz it was an amazing year otherwise.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 12:48 (twenty years ago)

1992 worst year for albums in terms of these combined factors:

quantity, quality, diversity and innovation

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 12:49 (twenty years ago)

>I think 1970 is gaining a lot of traction here.

jon savage put out a compilation earlier this year, Meridian 1970, to disprove this idea that it was null lull. Good comp if you can stand country rock/white blues/solo album business but it does seem like kinda slack year.

anyone can go back and collate a bunch of evidence that it was a golden time, surely what is interesting is how it was perceived then? for instance earlier this year Steven Daly wrote a column in GQ in which he looked at 1975 and wondered why people felt punk was needed, given the excellent albums released that year, and the list he came up with was bloody impressive, BUT the fact is people at the time DID feel rock was petering out and in need of massive revitalization.

I defy anybody to find twenty great songs by twenty different artists from 1998. You CAN'T.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 13:32 (twenty years ago)

I was going to say 1998. Or maybe 2004. There's nothing wrong with any year from 1963-93 ish.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 13:37 (twenty years ago)

The #1 hits from 1970 are pretty endearing for the most part - there's a sort of hippy/bubblegum fusion going on which I find quite enchanting.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 14:07 (twenty years ago)

I remember 1999 being hailed as a GREAT pop music year, maybe due to the year before being so lackluster.

Top runners thus far?? 1970, 1998

ZionTrain (ZionTrain), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 14:12 (twenty years ago)

I have always been told that my birth year, 1975, was a really mediocre pop year.

Billy Pilgrim (Billy Pilgrim), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 14:13 (twenty years ago)

1998 chart stuff i liked: the boy is mine, doo wop (that thing), frozen, hard knock life, ray of light, this kiss, truly madly deeply, you're still the one, i will buy you a new life, spice up your life, intergalactic, butterfly, uninvited...there is more, i'm sure. i just took a quick look at a list.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 14:26 (twenty years ago)

Brimful of Asha and U Make Me Wanna are classics from 98

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 14:34 (twenty years ago)

2005 ?
depends on what we call "pop" : is it just pop as opposed to rock or pop as everything that charts ?

AleXTC (AleXTC), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 14:54 (twenty years ago)

The problem with choosing a year after the fact is that the perspective is skewed. It's like the erosion of time destroys the dust and chaff to reveal the treasure underneath. I can barely remember 1975, but I'd bet that many of the albums on Daly's list were either nowhere to be seen or just under the radar, media was a much more constricted and narrow outlet back then.

If I had to pick a year I'd go for '68 or 96/97, though all have their highlights too.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Thursday, 16 June 2005 03:41 (twenty years ago)

1985

Orbit (Orbit), Thursday, 16 June 2005 04:16 (twenty years ago)

"Ghetto Superstar" - Pras

sorry BSJ, in no universe could this be considered a great song.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 16 June 2005 12:15 (twenty years ago)

"Gimme Some Mo" - Busta Rhymes
"Ghetto Superstar" - Pras
"The Boy Is Mine" - Brandy & Monica
"You Make Me Wanna" - Usher
"Can I Get A..." - Jay-Z

By listing these, you are making 1998 look a lot worse than it actually was.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 16 June 2005 13:10 (twenty years ago)

1990 was a pretty weak year btw. (And if you list a bunch of hip-hop or dance songs that you consider good from that year, you are probably just underlining my point)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 16 June 2005 13:16 (twenty years ago)

sorry BSJ, in no universe could this be considered a great song.

I can't resist the ODB verses.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Thursday, 16 June 2005 15:17 (twenty years ago)

So it's decided then, 1985 wins.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Thursday, 16 June 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

I feel like I haven't defended 1998 well enough, so here's 20 more songs, still not repeating artists from the first list. If you can't find 20 songs between these 2 lists, then I guess you're just cooler than I am.

"Got Myself Arrested" - Gomez
"Walking After You" - Foo Fighters

Singling out 1985 is utterly riduculous.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 16 June 2005 16:10 (twenty years ago)

Other than "Part Time Love" and "St Elmo's Fire", I can't see much to smile about in 85.

1990 was a pretty weak year btw. (And if you list a bunch of hip-hop or dance songs that you consider good from that year, you are probably just underlining my point)

Well no, I wouldn't be, but even excluding the great great hip-hop and dance tracks from that year, keeping things very rock/pop Geir-style, you are very wrong.

Besides, I think I could easily pick 20-30 good singles from just about any year. Maybe apart from 1970, which I stand by as the worst year ever.

These are all great! And I'm pretty sure a good swathe of ILM's pro-pop contigent will go to bat for "Tragedy" as well.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 16 June 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

Years ending in 5 are usually a bit weird and transitiony.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 16 June 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

Interesting, as I see no signs of transition this year. Maybe a bit less R&B, but no obvious signs as to what will follow instead.

I'll try ... 2000 for worst year. Someone convince me of the opposite, plz.

Koens (Koens), Thursday, 16 June 2005 21:11 (twenty years ago)

I would have noted the greatness of "No Scrubs" and "Turn Around" if I had seen them. I will note that "Re-Rewind" is definitely a song that lost impact the 15,000th time I heard it.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 16 June 2005 21:21 (twenty years ago)

Sorry Dom, the "are you tired of life" was directed at SRS.

Yes, Re-Rewind started to wear a bit in the end, but i haven't heard it for 5 years now, i'm sure i'd love it all over again.

Koens (Koens), Thursday, 16 June 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

1970 is the worst year--this is madness. If only for the fact that "Jack Johnson" and "Lick My Decals Off, Baby" are from that year. And, "Fun House."

but anyway, maybe we're not going far back enough...like, what was going on in the pop charts in 1950, I ask? Just wondering...

but anyway, maybe we're not going far back enough...like, what was going on in the pop charts in 1950, I ask? Just wondering...

A lot of great Tin Pan Alley stuff, as usual back then. Sure, not a top vintage, but at least better than the late 50s, when it seemed more than half of the chart entries were based on the same 3 chords and 12 bars.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 17 June 2005 01:40 (twenty years ago)

I'd have to disagree with the assessments of the fifties.

As far as the early fifties, FORGET the pop charts; the R&B listings were where the real action was. Besides, they were the shape of things to come - the country charts, too. I could do without that Tin Pan Alley shit that Geir Hongro referenced. It's not about the chord progressions and 12-bar structures, it's the FEELING that went in 'em. Fats Domino over Patti Page any damn day.

Rev. Hoodoo (Rev. Hoodoo), Friday, 17 June 2005 02:47 (twenty years ago)

50s rock was boring. The excitement of good music always lies in the melody/harmony, and there wasn't a lot to get from 50s rock in that respect. Tin Pan Alley was great though.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 17 June 2005 09:40 (twenty years ago)

There's something to be said for 1950's playlists. Having to hear some corny pop crooner like Perry Como made Chuck Berry sound that much better. No wonder rock & roll swept the world when it did, 'cause hearing Carl Perkins on a Tin Pan Alley-dominated playlist is like recess during a long, tedious school day. I would never outlaw melody & harmony, but I'd need some good ol' fashioned trash, twang & thunder to offset it. Can't find that in Mitch Miller & his Sing-A-Long Gang. Guess we agree to disagree.

Rev. Hoodoo (Rev. Hoodoo), Saturday, 18 June 2005 07:20 (twenty years ago)

The milk-filled drums in the video offers no ambiguity as to the content of this out-of-place locker room anthem.

It's been a long time since I've seen it, Marcello, but wasn't that Geils' post-Wolf single from 1984, "Concealed Weapon"?

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Saturday, 18 June 2005 13:38 (twenty years ago)

I would never outlaw melody & harmony, but I'd need some good ol' fashioned trash, twang & thunder to offset it.

The Beatles knew how to combine both.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 18 June 2005 21:49 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, what happened to those guys, anyway?

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Sunday, 19 June 2005 03:42 (twenty years ago)

Going by what I heard and read about, the UK wasn't any better - Adam Ant and that New Romantic shite isn't really my thing (besides, another couple of years and soon the ABC's would be easing the REO's off the charts anyway)

What has happened to my ILM?

Atnevon (Atnevon), Sunday, 19 June 2005 06:51 (twenty years ago)

The Beatles did indeed know how to combine melody & harmony with trash & twang. But rock & roll was valid BEFORE they came along and made it a so-called "art form."

Rev. Hoodoo (Rev. Hoodoo), Sunday, 19 June 2005 07:43 (twenty years ago)

As if Geir's passionate disapproval weren't enough, here's a dozen additional reasons (as yet unmentioned, I think) why '70 was one of my top 4 favourite years EVAH!

Sir Lord Baltimore, Kingdom Come
Soft Machine, Third
Tim Buckley, Starsailor
Amon Düül II, Yeti
Parliament, Osmium
Funkadelic, Funkadelic AND Free Your Mind etc.
MC5, Back In The USA
Tony Williams Lifetime, Turn It Over
John McLaughlin, Devotion
James Brown, Sex Machine
Deep Purple, In Rock
Swamp Dogg - Total Destrucion To Your Mind

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Sunday, 19 June 2005 09:15 (twenty years ago)

retroman, Sunday, 19 June 2005 10:57 (twenty years ago)

To that 1970 list I'll add some faves of mine:
FUN HOUSE, Stooges
EAT OUT MORE OFTEN, Rudy Ray Moore
FLAMINGO, Flamin' Groovies
BITCHES BREW, Miles Davis
THE ISAAC HAYES MOVEMENT
1+1+1=4, Sir Douglas Quintet

Although I'll be quick to add that these albums were great DESPITE being from 1970, not BECAUSE OF...

2005 has been fine so far. Maybe not fantastic, but certainly not bad.

Just from this week (UK/US Top 40/50):

'Oh', 'Since U Been Gone', 'Don't Cha', 'Mr Brightside', 'Hate It Or Love It', 'Girlfight', '1, 2 Step', '1 Thing', 'Goin' Crazy', 'Energy', 'Lonely', 'Feel Good Inc', 'U Don't Know Me'.

minolta (minolta), Sunday, 19 June 2005 22:02 (twenty years ago)

1998 - the present has been a nightmare for me as far as the ultrapopular pop chart-y type things go, but the stuff that's at least a little under the wire? Yeah, that's been joyful to me.

I am SERIOUSLY jonesing for a time period when all the crap pre-assembled teenybopper pop crap and the substance-free hip-hop nonsense will FINALLY fade away, even if only for about five or six years, and the good stuff can finally be able to have a chance on the charts. Like, I would KILL for the teens today to have the same kinds of teen idols that the teens of the early - mid '80s or the early - mid '90s had. That way all the crap soulless nonsense can just fucking GO. Far, far away.
