xpost

I really like the Wexler EP. The lyrics are very good, and the music has a really cool feel (nylon string guitar, eerie out-of-tune piano, singing saw, etc.) His voice can be an acquired taste though, and some people I know don't like it. Think of it as a darker, less childlike counterpart to Joanna Newsom's voice maybe (though I don't really put him into the "freak folk" category). By the way, I happen to know Wexler, so I might be a little biased here -- my band has played a bunch of shows with him and a couple of my bandmates grew up with him. But as a result I've been following him for the last few years, and I've always thought he was pretty excellent.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 00:05 (twenty years ago)

Thanks for the confirmation.

I've really been getting into "Antique Glow" by Kelley Stoltz. Great, effervescent psych pop. I guess he just got signed to Sub Pop.

For some reason, I got the impression that the Wexler might be in the same ball park. I'll like it regardless, by the sounds of it.

i'm having something of a country buzz at the moment.

mazzy star - she hangs brightly
band of blacky ranchette - still lookin' good to me
american music club - mercury
cat power - teh covers record
the corn sisters - the other woman
the sadies - favourite colours

gem (trisk), Thursday, 23 June 2005 03:25 (twenty years ago)

band of blacky ranchette is GREAT! Kudos.

John Justen (johnjusten), Thursday, 23 June 2005 03:55 (twenty years ago)

yeah i've been thrashing that one. i especially love 'the muss of paradise', the way it gets interrupted by the cop telling them to move on and then they take it up again, i wish i was sitting in the back seat of that car. it reminds my why i like lofi stuff.

gem (trisk), Thursday, 23 June 2005 03:57 (twenty years ago)

You are, I assume, a Giant Sand/Calexico fan as well? If not, I would be glad to YSI something in exchange for the Cat Power covers album, as a former junkie roommate absconded with it to the world of "CD's for smack." Actually, I'd be glad to YSI either way.

John Justen (johnjusten), Thursday, 23 June 2005 06:01 (twenty years ago)

i like calexico but the band of blacky ranchette is actually my first experience of howe gelb, though when i listened to it i then realised he guests on an m ward album i have. i followed the links from neko case to the band of blacky ranchette album after hearing some of it on a country program on the radio. so the moral is, yes i am pretty keen to hear a bit more of giant sand definitely. i can definitely ysi cat power, is that your proper gmail addy?

gem (trisk), Thursday, 23 June 2005 06:28 (twenty years ago)

Yup. My true life and identity via email is open to the world. If yours is legit, I will YSI the Giant Sand "Cover Magazine" in exchange. Covers for covers! Life is a beautiful thing...

John Justen (johnjusten), Thursday, 23 June 2005 06:32 (twenty years ago)

sounds cool. that is indeed my proper gmail address.

gem (trisk), Thursday, 23 June 2005 06:33 (twenty years ago)

hey dopey question - i've never tried to ysi a whole album before, only songs - is that actually possible or do you do it song by song? our work server is dodge as today so i'm having trouble accessing ysi too

gem (trisk), Thursday, 23 June 2005 06:51 (twenty years ago)

I think song by song works best. If not, that's what I'm doing, so I hope I'm right.

John Justen (johnjusten), Thursday, 23 June 2005 06:53 (twenty years ago)

ok song by song it is. thought i must be missing some really obvious way of doing a whole album.

gem (trisk), Thursday, 23 June 2005 06:54 (twenty years ago)

Me too. BTW, I think YSI is also dodgy today...so your work may not be to blame.

John Justen (johnjusten), Thursday, 23 June 2005 06:55 (twenty years ago)

"miss america" mary margeret o'hara - mint vinyl for 99p!

Giant Sand is one of my favorites. I recently acquired the awesomely great Heartland LP by the Band of Blacky Ranchette, which might be my favorite Howe Gelb recording. Though Chore of Enchantment and Is All Over...the Map are up there too.

Gear! (Ill Cajun Gunsmith) (Gear!), Thursday, 23 June 2005 07:21 (twenty years ago)

Got into them via Calexico, and I'll never regret it. Haven't heard "Heartland"...but tomorrow is Minneapolis CD browsing day, so I'll look for it then.

John Justen (johnjusten), Thursday, 23 June 2005 07:27 (twenty years ago)

http://www.sa-wa-ro.com/BlackyR-Pages/blacky-heartland.htm

as far as I know, it's been out of print since the late '80s and was never released on CD. But you never know, it might be widely available? I've had some decent luck finding Gelb-related vinyl (first two Blacky LPs, Valley of Rain, The Love Songs)

Gear! (Ill Cajun Gunsmith) (Gear!), Thursday, 23 June 2005 07:34 (twenty years ago)

widely available used, that is. scrounging might turn it up, I've seen it a couple other times, I know.

Gear! (Ill Cajun Gunsmith) (Gear!), Thursday, 23 June 2005 07:35 (twenty years ago)

yeah i have a feeling i could develop an addiction to gelb's stuff, unfortunately i haven't found any of his records in perth yet, i got still lookin' good to me from the net. but i've heard all his incarnations being played on the same country show i heard him on first so presumably he isn't completely obscure here.

gem (trisk), Thursday, 23 June 2005 07:39 (twenty years ago)

singles! on my lunch break. woo. st etienne, "side streets" and malcolm middleton, "loneliness shines/no modest bear" (both 7"); plus M83, "teen angst" (there's a remix i've not heard) and LCD soundsystem, "disco infiltrator" (for the version of "slowdive") on CD. buying singles is great - you feel like a 16-year-old again.

although i didn't actually buy that many singles when i was 16. i didn't have much cash left over from all the cigarettes.

most of my other acquisitions this month have come from the arts desk after a clearout (highlights: antony and the johnsons, the magic numbers). o yeh: and i went to the trouble of tracking down MP3s of that arcade fire EP, and then the fuckers went and re-released it. ho hum.

i have a growing list of stuff to buy (the chat about the isolee album intrigues me greatly) but ... having just spent £70 on a pinstripe linen suit on a whim, it's going to have to wait. fuck.

This is beautiful. I've been trying to buy these CDs since February, I think. For a few months now anyway. I sent a check and various messages to Hopscotch Records but have not heard back from them, so I tried ordering through Tower, but that order has been canceled. Just as well, since I've been ordering some other things.

But I kind of like the fact that Hopscotch Records was so oblivious to my order. Very avant-garde of them. "You want to buy our CDs? We'll think about it."

Don't sell your art to some guy "shitting on a nine to five" in the words of Noel Scott (of the Sun Ra Arkestra). (He wasn't talking about me in particular, nor was he telling people not to sell their art, but he did use that phrase while discussing musicians' economic relations with wage earner mundane types).

William Parker & The Little Huey Creative Music Orchestra: Mayor of Punkville.

I was a little sorry I bought this initially, since it's not the type of thing I feel any urgency to hear right now. However, I've been enjoying Disc 2 quite a bit. It's one of the closest things I've heard to the Sun Ra Arkestra in loose somewhat free big band mode. Probably echoes of New Orleans brass band, that I might be missing. Need to give Disc 1 another go.

RS LaRue (RSLaRue), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 00:49 (twenty years ago)

Never said anything about Tells Untold. I still haven't listened to it much. It doesn't strike me as very cohesive, but maybe that will change with repeated listenings. It starts off with a pretty accessible (though not particularly jazzy) acoustic sort of feel, but it gets more difficult in later parts. I vaguely remember some odd electric keyboard or synthesizer or something like that. (I really haven't listened much.) Anyway, on first casual listenings, I don't like it as much as America.

Some dvds- Christopher Doyle's Away With Words, the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre ($6.99 at Best Buy, well worth it) and Nicolas Roeg's Don't Look Now.

Music:
The Mars Volta- Frances the Mute (again, cheap as hell at Best Buy, and I love "L'Via L'Viaquez," so I figure it's worth taking a chance),
the Assault on Precinct 13 soundtrack reissue on Record Makers,
Skeletons & The Girl-Faced Boys- "Git",
Kill Memory Crash- When The Blood Turns Black

This Dandna CD is surprisingly good with headphones. It seems like the Gulf states are ahead of Egypt when it comes to doing interesting things with slick production. Nice layers. Well, it is on EMI, but it doesn't appear aimed at a crossover audience. (Just try finding anything out about it.)

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Thursday, 28 July 2005 09:50 (twenty years ago)

There's lots of good reggae in the HMV sale, intend buying I-Roy's "Don't Check With No Lightweight Stuff" as soon as poss.

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 28 July 2005 09:57 (twenty years ago)

Only the Yabby is on B&F, PJM.

HMV are doing some Greensleeves albums for £5.99 (inlc. Scientist, Dr. Alimatado etc etc), B&F for £7.99 (as well as the Yabby I saw Dub Gone Crazy and Johhny Clarke and Junior Byles collections) and that newish Virgin series for £4.99 (I saw Althea + Donna, a couple of G. Isaacs collections, Twinkle Bros, Abyssinians, K. Hudson - Too Expensive, some Tappa Zukie and Price Far I)

There are a few of the Trojan 2CD collections in card outer sleeves - I was tempted by the Delroy Wilson, given that he's the greatest reggae vocalist ever and all that, but I probably have over 50% of it already. There's also a Dillinger 2CD thing going cheap.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 28 July 2005 10:16 (twenty years ago)

Tree wave - cabana EP (great lush 8bit music)
Books - Thought for food
Jamie Lidell - Multiply (holy crap this is great! 21st prince soul)

Yeah - I saw that one. It didn't have the card sleeve, so I wasn't sure if it was the latest Troj issue or not. I think in all probability it was the latest one, but had parted company from its sleeve.

I haven't seen the B&F Big Yoot set. £25 sounds steep but goodness the sound on most B&F sets is flippin' fantastic!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 28 July 2005 13:34 (twenty years ago)

Big Youth B&F is very good, well worth £25, I think, and I am a notorious tightarse. I've seen it cheap(er) in Spain and possibly Sounds of the Universe, but don't quote me. I think the one in Spain was an accident. My copy is badly scratched.
