pillow fluffed up, lights off, bring 'em on...

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Saturday, 2 July 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

Mariah should have done a Vandross song, that would have been less... dull.

Huey (Huey), Saturday, 2 July 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

God I really really really really really really really really hate Mariah.

Kent Burt (lingereffect), Saturday, 2 July 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

Why did we start a new thread? I was hoping to break 1500 posts with the last one!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 2 July 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

Here's Youssou N'Dour w/ Dido. I hope I get to hear some Youssou N'Dour by himself dropping some Islamic knowledge.

RS LaRue (RSLaRue), Saturday, 2 July 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

Did James Brown play in Paris yet?

Kent Burt (lingereffect), Saturday, 2 July 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

Why did we start a new thread?

Mark s was having trouble loading it.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Saturday, 2 July 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

mariah at least seemed quite warm about the whole thing. she was like the hot aunt to that little kid.

ppp, Saturday, 2 July 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

Singing with Yossou N'Dour, appearing at multiple live aid shows Dido is a one woman Genesis!

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 2 July 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

Was that Vick'n'Davie Beckham in the crowd during Mariah - I wandered off to get a bag of crisps and a new bottle of wine.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 2 July 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

London -> Cornwall not quite Phil Collins!

Huey (Huey), Saturday, 2 July 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

yeah, it was. posh was singing along, while beckham was poking her in the hip.

ppp, Saturday, 2 July 2005 20:03 (twenty years ago)

Unless, is she and Youssou somewhere else too?

Huey (Huey), Saturday, 2 July 2005 20:03 (twenty years ago)

PLACEBO IN PAREE

Dido's in Philly!

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 2 July 2005 20:03 (twenty years ago)

maura (maura), Saturday, 2 July 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

Lenny Henry has gone up a wee bit in my estimation by impersonating the Proclaimers using a song that isn't one of their hits.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 2 July 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

She's MORE than Collins!

Huey (Huey), Saturday, 2 July 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

Here comes the Beckham / Williams hot ticket.

Huey (Huey), Saturday, 2 July 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

"Robbie Williams is on stage right now"

Well, fuck me if he doesn't look really like David Beckham...

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 2 July 2005 20:05 (twenty years ago)

they are making a joint plea for us attention relief

maura (maura), Saturday, 2 July 2005 20:05 (twenty years ago)

Fill in, Dave. Fill in.

Huey (Huey), Saturday, 2 July 2005 20:05 (twenty years ago)

What was up with Natalie Portman? I thought it was Sinead O'Connor for a second.

Why is MTV only showing half of one song from everybody? Are they not going to show the entire Pink Floyd set?

freddie, Saturday, 2 July 2005 20:05 (twenty years ago)

Beckham looks terrified. He's not good at this sort of thing, is he?

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 2 July 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

OMG Brian Molko with short hair ... he looks like a boy ...

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 2 July 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

beckham looks about 14.

robbie looks happy. he has just sexed ferne from the BBC though, so that makes sense.

ppp, Saturday, 2 July 2005 20:07 (twenty years ago)

If he plays 'Angels' you just know thats the moment everyone will talk about. Something for the kids the moms and the grannies.

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 2 July 2005 20:07 (twenty years ago)

this snappy "every 3 seconds" gap-ad looking thing is extremely iffy

jones (actual), Saturday, 2 July 2005 20:07 (twenty years ago)

there should be a ban on queen covers. it could be good if he brings five on, though.

ppp, Saturday, 2 July 2005 20:07 (twenty years ago)

I've said it once, and I'll say it again, America has no need for Robbie Williams.

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 2 July 2005 20:08 (twenty years ago)

Tenner says he asks everyone to get their mobiles out and call their mums for Angels (that's his "thing" live, and yes, I have been to see him, and no, I didn't phone my mum)

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 2 July 2005 20:08 (twenty years ago)

Slash n' Robbie, the Stoke massive steal the show.

Huey (Huey), Saturday, 2 July 2005 20:12 (twenty years ago)

keep in tune robbie!!

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 2 July 2005 20:13 (twenty years ago)

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 2 July 2005 20:16 (twenty years ago)

he is obviously a bit of a hip hop fan is robbie - first he said everyone should bounce, now hes telling them to lean back. the crowd have no idea what to do though.

ppp, Saturday, 2 July 2005 20:16 (twenty years ago)

robbie needs some hits that are more recent.

Live 8 Falls Behind Schedule

By Thomas Fitzgerald
INQUIRER STAFF WRITER

Live8 was running about an hour late just after 4 p.m. when Jay-Z and Linkin Park took the Art Museum stage and rocked the Parkway, packed with hundreds of thousands of people for the historic concert for African debt relief.

Authorities reported five arrests for disorderly conduct by mid-afternoon, with no traffic problems or serious injuries, although the humidity and the crowded conditions sent about 22 people to area hospitals for treatment of dehydration. Another 100 people were treated at one of the five medical tents along the Parkway, mostly for heat exhaustion.

Thousands heeded advice to take public transit, as SEPTA trains heading into the city were jammed, with delays in some cases.

Portable toilets near the Art Museum stage were oversubscribed, but lines were moderate farther east on the parkway.

"Other than the fact that it's hot, it's going beautifully," Deputy Police Commissioner Patricia Giorgio-Fox said. She said traffic was flowing smoothly throughout the city and that, contrary to pre-concert fears, neighborhood surrounding the Parkway were not jammed.

As Bon Jovi played about 12:30 p.m., Nina Curcio made it to the altar in the Cathedral of Ss. Peter and Paul on time, the beads on her white gown sparkling brightly, to marry her fiance, Joseph DiTomo, in a ceremony that drew about 50 relatives and friends.

"You couldn't hear a thing," said Curcio, 22, before she and her new husband headed to South Jersey for their reception in Bellmawr. Wedding attendees, expecting to be snarled in traffic, were amazed at how easy it was to penetrate to near the heart of the happening.

A police officer and two officials from the city Department of Licenses and Inspections were treated for burned hands after coming in contact with an unknown hazardous chemical, according to Stefanie Porges, a physician from the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania who was in charge of medical services at an emergency tent at 22nd and the Parkway.

The chemical, which was not considered a public safety hazard, had been thrown into a trash can as the officials were in search of unlicensed souvenir T-shirts, Porges said. The officials were being treated at Hahnemann Hospital.

Philadelphia Detective James Seymour said one fan was standing on top of the Port-a-Potty at 22nd and the Parkway to better see the show and it collasped. No serious injuries were reported.

By midafternoon, the Parkway was about half-filled, meaning there were at least 200,000 people - and the crowd was beginning to swell. As some were arriving, however, others were leaving, driven away by the heat and the crush.

Sun Chang, 31, had driven down from Spring Valley, N.Y. on Friday night for the music, but she left the area in front of the stage just before 1 p.m., without seeing the acts she had come for, Alicia Keyes and Destiny's Child.

"It's too packed," she said, "People stepping all over you. We're going to get something to eat and then probably go and watch it on TV."

Jason Quarantillo, 27, drove up from the Baltimore area, but found the experience overwhelming. "It's tough to get around," he said. "It's like a human zoo."

East of 18th on the Parkway where the music was not audible, the atmosphere was more like a street fair, with vendor booths selling everything from Falun Gong pamphlets to Alex's Lemonade. Spotting balloons floated high above the porta-potty stations and medical tents.

Nick Taedia, 17, and Joe Pizzo, 15, of Mayfair, were working at a water ice stand - but their real offering was "Free Hugs and Kisses with purchase."

"Then we got lazy and started doing it for free," Taedia said. "We're just spreading the love around," added a shirtless Pizzo.

Four hours into their "work," the duo estimated they had given out thousands of hugs and kisses. "My hugs are getting better all the time."

He then delivered three hugs in a row to a group of teenage girls. Then an older woman came up, but started to walk away when she saw "with purchase" on their sign.

"It's free!" Pizzo told her. "Free?" she said. Then she gave him a hug.

The sound quality improved as one approached the Art Museum. But at 20th Street, the edge of the thickest part of the crowd, it sounded tinny, like a passing car with its radio turned up too loud.

Dyneisha Tyson, 12, walked 30 blocks from North Philadelphia to hear Jay-Z and Destiny's Child, but left quickly because of the crowd.

"It was really crowded. You couldn't see the sky, said Tyson as she walked back to North Philadelphia.

"There's too many people," said her friend Latifa Raymond, 14, also of North Philadelpia.

A group of friends sitting outside of Whole Foods Market about five blocks from the Parkway enjoyed the concert in the shade.

"It's better here," said Dan Magro, 18 of Philadelphia. "We can hear what they are singing."

Earlier, he and his three were sitting about 75 feet from the stage during Black Eyed Peas performance. They also left because of the crammed conditions in front of the stage.

"I had to fake sick," said Sarah Doherty, 16 of Philadelphia, who pretended to vomit get out of the crowd.

Inquirer staff writers Adam Fifield, Christine Schiavo, Joseph Slobodzian, Natalie Pompilio, David Hiltbrand, Sam J. Lin, Melissa Dribben, and Tina Moore contributed to this report.

RS LaRue (RSLaRue), Saturday, 2 July 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

I like how the BBC photos say the Paris show stars Sheryl Crow, Andrea Bocelli and Sheryl Crow. Good old Shezza. They also describe Zucchero as a "rocker" which doesn't seem quite right.

What did America do to deserve having Graham Norton? (According to Jonathan Ross he's anchoring the coverage from Philadephia)

IT DOESN'T MATTER IF WE ALL DIE

-- Robert Smith, doing his part to help save the world

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 2 July 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

It's all very well people being rock'n'roll and over-running, but last trains are delayed for no man. Middle England will be stranded! Still, Hyde Park is a nice place to be stranded I suppose.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 2 July 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

"I think the Who sound good and I don't even like the Who."

see, this is why you think they are good.

ppp, Saturday, 2 July 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

yeah, Roxy Music. About time too.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 2 July 2005 20:58 (twenty years ago)

Ferry's aging well.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Saturday, 2 July 2005 20:59 (twenty years ago)

I'm almost forgiving him for spawning that odious little foxhunting freak that was on Question Time the other day.

ok ctv directors are clearly lurking here: this pet shop boys clip is addressing every concern in my previous post

I am astonished to find myself joining the ranks of the W!H!O!vians. They were the best band so far by several furlongs.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:00 (twenty years ago)

I like that blonde woman beating her stick.

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:03 (twenty years ago)

I am stupidly excited about Pink Floyd, I used to love them when I was about fourteen and they are the sort of band this sort of gig should be about, maybe.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:03 (twenty years ago)

I'd rather (Tommy) Boyd than Pinky Floyd.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:03 (twenty years ago)

pink floyd sounding very good, and quite serene in light of everyone else. a nice way to end the night.

ppp, Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:03 (twenty years ago)

Dave Gilmour appears to have turned into Andy Gray when I wasn't looking.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:04 (twenty years ago)

Sorry R. Smith - had to switch to Floyd. R. Waters looks quite happy to be there... yayay!

Kent Burt (lingereffect), Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

hey since i'm the only person in the world watching the ctv feed of this, could i please see roxy music instead of motley crue?? thanks

jones (actual), Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

a nice way to end the night.

It's not over yet! We've still got Macca and 'Do They Know It's Nearly Christmas?' to go.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

This is starting to make very aware of my mortality.

RS LaRue (RSLaRue), Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:06 (twenty years ago)

Dave Gilmour should play an evil mastermind in the next series of 24.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:06 (twenty years ago)

I'm getting depressed. Over and over we die, one after the other.

RS LaRue (RSLaRue), Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:07 (twenty years ago)

I saw Ferry up close in a guest list queue the other week and boggled at his lustruous, abundant locks.

That One Guy (That One Guy), Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:12 (twenty years ago)

Tonight, the part of Roger Waters is being played by Bill Nighy.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:12 (twenty years ago)

Like Pete Townshend, Roger Waters seems to have grown into his nose with age.

Kent Burt (lingereffect), Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:12 (twenty years ago)

For a bunch of old guys, Floyd sounds phenomenal and Gilmour is still a guitar god.

jumper, Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:12 (twenty years ago)

Do FC Lyon know that Gerard Houllier is moonlighting as the Floyd's drummer?

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:13 (twenty years ago)

Actually, I have no idea where I got that Bill Nighy thing from. He is, in fact, Richard Gere, as noted already.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

Roger just gave a shout-out to Syd, that made my fucking day.

jumper, Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

Rog mentions Syd - very nice.

Xpost!

Kent Burt (lingereffect), Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

hey since i'm the only person in the world watching the ctv feed of this,

Watch on the AOL website instead and flip to CTV only for the artists you want to see, that's what I've been doing.

The Cure were great, but I figured they would play at least one song to lighten the mood a bit, y'know, close with "Just Like Heaven" or something.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:15 (twenty years ago)

pink floyd = how all old rock dinos should sound.

ppp, Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:15 (twenty years ago)

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:17 (twenty years ago)

Was just thinking that -- that Pink Floyd could probably play until they're 90 and it wouldn't be a joke (unlike, say, The Who).

jumper, Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:17 (twenty years ago)

This is immense. (and Jerry OTM about Gerard Houllier)

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:17 (twenty years ago)

Jeez, I'm not a Floyd fan But I'm welling up.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:18 (twenty years ago)

I can't believe this Pink Floyd set is sending chills down my spine but it is. It's too bad these twats fought for 25 years, they could have done some amazing work together.

jumper, Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:18 (twenty years ago)

in 20 years, we will be saying that about keane. floyd are amazing though.

ppp, Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:18 (twenty years ago)

So this is how Comfortably Numb originally sounded. Fuck.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:20 (twenty years ago)

I keep wanting the camera to pan round and reveal that everyone has left the venue except the band.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:21 (twenty years ago)

why did linkin park get a whole day and the cure only got 3 songs?!

Because that's what this special day is all about: Linkin Park.

RS LaRue (RSLaRue), Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:21 (twenty years ago)

HOW CAN THEY CUT THIS OFF IN THE MIDDLE OF COMFORTABLY NUMB??????????????????

jumper, Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:21 (twenty years ago)

If they played The Great Gig In The Sky I would be so ecstatic (though I might be alone in that).

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:22 (twenty years ago)

Floyd are phenomenally good. I got chills during "Wish You Were Here" and felt like a total dweeb, but so be it. I'm loving Gilmour's vocal on "Comfortably Numb."

Kent Burt (lingereffect), Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:22 (twenty years ago)

strangely, PF sound really modern.

ppp, Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:22 (twenty years ago)

hahahaha, there is a guy sitting on someone's shoulders playing air guitar. He looks like the kind of reason people don't admit to liking Pink Floyd.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:23 (twenty years ago)

you are all on drugs

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:23 (twenty years ago)

I must be getting old. I'm really enjoying Pink Floyd.

xpost I agree with PF.

Why are the 60 year olds (apart from snoo and robbie)the ones who sound the best tonight?

Andy Jay, Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:24 (twenty years ago)

I agree with PPP about PF i meant.

Andy Jay, Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:24 (twenty years ago)

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:24 (twenty years ago)

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

argh and SNOOP Dogg I mean.

Andy Jay, Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

Mason confirmed that the truce had been brokered by Geldof, partly to ramp up interest in Live8 in the States, where Pink Floyd are considerably more popular than poor African countries. "Plus I think Bob wanted an addition to what he did last time. He wanted a novelty act basically. It was a toss up between us and the Spice Girls. Not sure if we lost or won."

frinly, Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:30 (twenty years ago)

Alba I claim my 10%, cash or cheque is fine.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:30 (twenty years ago)

holy shit the floyd were great, surpassing my expectations. roger's voice not sounding so great on wish you were here, but he nailed comfortably numb. fuck you mtv for talking over the last verse! here's hoping they manage a tour. maybe?

kyle (akmonday), Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:30 (twenty years ago)

Why the hell does Stevie Wonder need Rob Thomas to help him sing ANYTHING??

nick mason would make a terrific tv dad

jones (actual), Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

why oldies were good:
i. they are used to playing venues this size
ii. they have honed their sets over decades, and know how to get the best out of the stage sound
iii. they have not been busy touring all over everywhere the last three years - they are tanned rested and ready

sadly PF have no good songs ever, and daltrey is a terrible singer

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

Over 5,000,000 people have watched on AOL, according to Bob Lefsetz.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

Hahaha, Whiley has now extended her hatefulness by saying she forgot to mention Snow Patrol as another highlight of the day.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:33 (twenty years ago)

Why is mark s so hard on ver Who?

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:34 (twenty years ago)

Tragically Hip are on stage in Barrie -- the first thing worth watching there in about two hours.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:38 (twenty years ago)

I would much rather watch the great and good of ILX talking in Jonathan Ross' pod than listen to another word of Fearne and Whiley's inane crap.

macca shd play wings stuff only IMO

mccartneys band is good, but a bit personality-less.

ppp, Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:49 (twenty years ago)

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 2 July 2005 22:06 (twenty years ago)

Annie Lennox, Paul McCartney, Pink Floyd, etc.

I was 12 when the original Live Aid took place, but knew most of the acts. How much do most of the people who have appeared today mean to the average 12 year old? If you were 12 you'd have been born post-Grunge, you'd have no memory of Britpop or Big Beat. Half of the groups today probably would probably mean about as much as people dancing the Charleston.

Kaiser Chiefs, that would appear to be it as far as I know (I have no desire to investigate further).

The Killers are OK. Their ONE SONG set didn't do them many favours today.

(xpost, yes Teh HoBB, but it's not the 12 years old who can vote and make a difference is it. Twenty years ago, you could give up your pocket money to make a difference, which is what they were after. This one's not about money)

Only saw a bit of The Who but Townshend was just thrilling. I am guessing Madonna's outfit was a tribute to Jagger's swishy white pants of yesterpark. Was pleased to see the Kaiser Chiefs go down well in Philly in a kind of Henman-reaching-Delray-Beach-semis dis/misplaced pride shit.

Big shock of the evening's telly - discovering that the compellingly gorge Mariska Hargitay of Law And Order: Special Victims Unit is Jayne Mansfield's daughter! Not strictly Live8-related, I realise.

Only heard a little bit of this on thee radio:

Madonna - somewhat dreary, plus tiresome gratuitous use of "fuck", haha silly mare.

Snow Patrol - unbeliveably dreary & plodding, like a shoegazer band w/thee reverb turned off.

The Killers - fucking shit. When people say guitar music is dead, it's b/c of lumpen unimaginative unadventurous CACK like this. Fuck 'em up thee ass.

Joss Stone (I think) - reasonably sprightly singing, I guess, but somewhat MOR & too much in thrall to singers past.

Robbie Williams = K-URGH.

The Who - good!

Pink Floyd - surprisingly good! I'd probably actually shell out & go & see them if the toured.

I suspect the old bands sounded better (which I thought they did on that limited sampling) for the usual rox0r1zt reasons - the time they came from = good "playing" and the whole do what you want mentality = encouraged more then perhaps.

The BBC was today forced to apologise after foul-mouthed performances by Madonna and other Live 8 stars resulted in over 350 complaints about swearing.

It was just 7.20pm - an hour and forty minutes before the 9pm watershed - when 46-year-old Madonna yelled 'Are you f***ing ready London?"

She broke the taboo about swearing in front of the 205,000-strong crowd and billions watching the live TV broadcast.

At the end of their set, Johnny Borell, lead singer of Razorlight, screamed 'I say sign the f***ing petition.'

And American rapper Snoop Dogg, 33, chanted 'Mother f***er' repeatedly during one song.

A BBC spokesman said: "We do apologise if anyone was offended. All the artists were told before they went on stage that it was live and to be mindful of their language.

"Obviously the excitement and occasion got to people but how can you tell Madonna off?

"We received just over 350 complaints about swearing. Considering the billions of people watching, that is not much.

"To put it in context if EastEnders starts five minutes late we get over 500 complaints.

"Obviously people have the right to complain if they are offended but this is a live event and there is not much we can do."

csi-dmc had someone from the cars in it but pffft like anyone cares

jones (actual), Sunday, 3 July 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

Highlights for me -- Roxy Music (fucking ruled), Snoop Dogg, The Cure (they did five songs, actally -- they paused for ten to fifteen minutes and then returned and did "Just Like Heaven" and "Boys Don't Cry"), Kaiser Chiefs (were entertaining and solid -- not innovative of course but who cares), Stevie Wonder (sans Maroon 5 and Rob Thomas), Green Day (if only for how they became Live 8's version of U2), Placebo.

Shocks: Simon le Bon looking like Elvis (I half-expected D2 to cover "Suspicious Minds"), seeing the German announcer guy say "Velvet Revolver -- big balls rock 'n' roll!", Chris Cornell touching and decimating some RATM song (which is funny because I always thought RATM would improve immeasurably with a different vocalist, but since Audioslave picked up Chris Cornell it's been a royally disheartening ride as I can't stand hearing CC for three seconds anyway), and the horror of Robbie Williams covering Queen.

Ian Riese-Moraine has been xeroxed into a conduit! (Eastern Mantra), Sunday, 3 July 2005 23:34 (twenty years ago)

I watched the whole UK Live8 on TV, not even turning over for the tennis score very often. I thought it was big, exciting and interesting.

I agree with Guy Beckett that Keane were a surprise hit. They are mediocre in a way and look bad, but during that second song the quality of the singing on a powerfully constructed song surged through unexpectedly. Plus, I think of them as the Ultravox of 2003, and Midge Ure has obviously been key to the campaign, so it feels the apter.

Every time I saw Macca I thought what a wonderful man and great genius he is.

U2's set made me cry.

Coldplay were dire: I think Chris Martin is a fatal weak link, a terrible vocalist and front man, and their material weas awful, not that I much dislike 'BSw Symphony'.

Madonna puts on a show, up to a point, but she seems arrogant, nasty and foolish; whereas Mariah Carey, though her material is so sludgy and inapt, does not - she seems generous and blithe, a trouper.

THE WHO are the great underrated act. They said nothing, were lower on the bill than a less important band, were barely announced or anticipated; the only BBC comment on them was Jo Whiley complaining that they look old. (Can you imagine how she'll look at their age?) But they are England's greatest ever ROCK band and, in tribute to Peter Stringbender, they played only 70S WHO. 'Who Are You?' mystified me slightly, but 'Won't Get Fooled Again?' was musically immense and conceptually rich, a complex thought-provoking gesture in this 20-years-on context. (How tremendous for a great artist of the 1960s to have written a great critique of the 1960s... as the 1960s ended - and still it surges.) The finest vocal moment of the day was Daltrey's yell at the end of that song, announcing the final section: no-one else matched his heroic power.

the pinefox, Tuesday, 5 July 2005 09:16 (twenty years ago)

I have just noticed that I agree with JtN about the above, by several furlongs.

Alba on 'young dinos' is a nice point.

It was odd how Robbie W came on to Fearne C - and it was unmentioned after that. It was as though he was making public the sort of thing that usually happens at these events.

I never once heard or read during the day or afterwards that the Cure would play, did played, had played. I don't understand this omission, don't understand how everyone else saw them and I did not.

Yesterday I was imagining Morrissey playing and wondering what he could play, and settled on 'Panic' and 'Ask', I think.

the pinefox, Tuesday, 5 July 2005 09:22 (twenty years ago)

Outstanding posts, Pinefox!

the only BBC comment on them was Jo Whiley complaining that they look old. God, Whiley is such an idiot!

As I said on the other thread, Snoop getting the crowd to chant "Peace!" while wearing a pendant in the shape of revolver was quite amusing

it was 'Peas' actually

Just watched the Floyd set. It's a shame that Waters's voice has gotten so thin. His bass playing was just lovely, even on slow old "Breathe."

Interesting that Gilmour was regarded as the wussier singer, the one who did the high pretty bits, while Waters was there for the guts and the venom. If anything, Gilmour's singing has gotten better, more full, since he had to take over and try to be the frontman he never really was. While, sadly, Roger can't quite bring many of the notes and ended up sort of talking along with the music.

So I was glad they reunited, but at the same time, it's kind of a little vindication for Gilmour fans vs. post-Waters Floyd hataz.

I wonder if the cameramen were under instructions from Gilmour and Waters not to show Rick Wright. Didn't Rick Wright do a lot of the "high pretty bits"?

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 12:20 (twenty years ago)

I would say that Wright, physically, was probably the best preserved of the four, so maybe that's why they were a bit resentful.

Agree that he didn't get a lot of screen time. Wright did not sing as far as I could tell. He didn't have a mike in front of him anyways (on the synth side). On "Comfortably Numb," they had a female backup singer; I couldn't see who was singing backup on "Breathe."

I seem to recall that "Us and Them" and "Time" are the most recognizable PF songs with a Wright vocal part.

I always thought he sang a lot more than that, his voice is quite like Gilmour's but higher, he did do a lot of harmony singing - but not at Live8!

Thanks, Pashmina.

*I keep on reading "PF" and thinking people are referring to The Pinefox.
Why is mark s so hard on ver Who?*

Outstanding posts, JtN - and yes, where was Bowie?

I still want to know the truth about Williams and Cotton. Perhaps it will be on the cover of a magazine I will see in the supermarket.

five months pass...
It was. I read up on it as much as I could. They live on different continents.

But meanwhile - today on TV, Live8 highlights, caught at random. The same old feelings as the doves fly for 'Beautiful Day' and Bono rambles through the end: 'Paul McCartney - what a gift to the world'. How moving!
