Is The MFA "The Difference it Makes" (Superpitcher Remix) from this year? If so, its my favorite remix of the year. Maybe ever!!

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 4 July 2005 00:08 (twenty years ago)

i don't think so, since adamrl put it on a cd for me last year.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 4 July 2005 00:16 (twenty years ago)

i think that was 2004, phil (at any rate it went on my best-of-2004 cdr so OBVIOUSLY I'M RIGHT)

as for this year:
the killers - mr brightside (jlc mix)
m83 - teen angst (luciano mix)
dextro - do you need help (mfa mix)

joseph (joseph), Monday, 4 July 2005 00:16 (twenty years ago)

(i will say, phil, that although i already liked that track, more or less, your recent championing of it did make me go back to it and now i think it's really fantastic.)

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 4 July 2005 00:17 (twenty years ago)

m83 - teen angst (luciano mix)

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 4 July 2005 00:17 (twenty years ago)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 4 July 2005 00:55 (twenty years ago)

(i will say, phil, that although i already liked that track, more or less, your recent championing of it did make me go back to it and now i think it's really fantastic.)

i have it on my ipod shuffle, but i really only listen to that one song. 30 minutes on repeat on the way to work, and 30 minutes on repeat on the way home from work. so about one hour of MFA "The Difference it Makes" (Superpitcher Remix) per day. Oh its so beautiful makes me cry!!! and dance at the same time!

Omar (Omar), Monday, 4 July 2005 06:59 (twenty years ago)

It's been a bit of a quiet one. Last year, there were quite a few mixes I could name and I wasn't even in the UK. This year, there's SchwarzFrapp, the Jaxx and FakeID mixes of 'Technologic' and:

Lazyboy - 'Facts Of Life' Cagedbaby Dawn Blissmix
Rachel Stevens - 'So Good' Extended Mix
Beck - 'Girl' Octet Mix, 'Gameboy & Homeboy' ('Que Onda Guero' Remix)
Feist - 'Inside and Out' Pearson and Al Usher Elektronischer Dub. Incidentally, anyone not mentioning Al Usher's involvement is a blithering idiot with reading comprehension issues.
Silicone Soul - 'The Poisoners Diary' E. Pearson Mixes
Ciara - 'Oh'/Lady Sovereign - 'Blah Blah Blah' Cadence Weapon remixes
Soulwax - 'NY Excuse'/'Another Excuse' Justice & DFA mixes
Shirokuma - 'Moonlight In The Afternoon' Max Tundra Remix
Amerie - '1 Thing' Spizzazz Edit
Colder - 'Shiny Star' - Matthew Dear Remix
Circlesquare - '7 Minutes' - Patrick Wolf Remix
Lazyboy - 'Police Dogs Bonfire' - Seadevils Remix (by Radio Slave and Cagedbaby)
And (potentially) the entirety of Shugo Tokumaru - NPRMX: Night Piece Remixes

fe zaffe (fezaffe), Monday, 4 July 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

Little protective of Mr. Usher aren't we?

Chat stinking, is it?

Negativa, True Believer (Sheryl Crow in a Britney costume) (Barima), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 10:19 (twenty years ago)

Chat stinking, is it?

Um, what?

Needless to say, it's a pretty great remix, although I prefer it slightly sped up. Ewan's re-touch of the Aside is nice too.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

Let the record show that 3 of Ewan's very best remixes were produced in collaboration with Al Usher and that each all feature pop melodies, great basslines and vocal cut-ups. And that Michael is a nipple.

BARMS, Tuesday, 5 July 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

loads of these are from 04, I understand though, I keep thinking of 04 ones too.

so ones I am certain are from 05, almost all of michael's otm, sounds like propping for the sake of it but they are most of the ones I'd have said aswell. few he may have forgot....or I may have skimmed over by accident.

the pearson/usher thing is from last year I thought? I bought it for 3 euro, it is too slow though, and something about it puts me off, it's great actually but like alot of pearson's recent stuff is a bit bombastic or something, doesn't fit with any kind of set really alot of the time.

the knife-pass this on (mandy remix)
m83-don't save us from the flames (superpitcher remix)
juan maclean-tito's way (reverso 68 remix)
the glass-hear the music (mylo remix)
royksopp-only this moment (braxe/falke remix)
michael mayer-lovefood (aguayo remix)
triola vs wighnomys thing

And the Lutzenkirschen thing mentioned upthread is good yeah, blatant Tiefschwarz biting but a good record.

x-post barima you are making me look calm lately

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 18:33 (twenty years ago)

there are loads of other remixes I could name but some of them just feel like tracks and not remixes, not really stylistically or sonically, just you reach a point where the distinction is irrelevent, beyond the realms of the famous remixer!!! I don't mean that snobbishly actually, it reads quite badly, just mean I don't see the point of naming a tracky guido schneider remix or a nice flipside on some other minimal record.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

Where is this found (from way, way upthread):

LCD "Tribulations" Lindstrom Mix

YSI anyone?

Also YSI The MFA "The Difference it Makes" (Superpitcher Remix)?

Just a thought.

matt2 (matt2), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

Thanks for the clarification Barima, I didn't know about those other Usher mixes, what are they of?

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

triola vs wighnomys thing

what now?

eat my replacement (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

it's on "Today", the Wighnomy Brothers "Polar Zipper" remix of Triola, my fave thing they've ever done, maybe. really fills a room though I never get to play that sort of stuff, sadly.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

Adam: It's also on this 12".

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 22:37 (twenty years ago)

the lindstrom 'tribulations' isn't out for ages yet. i might get a slap if i ysi.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 22:41 (twenty years ago)

Barima I think there's a slight tendency to ignore Al Usher's intermittent collaborations with Pearson because when they did do stuff before it was of quite a different style (check out Pearson's Small Change mix from several years ago), and it was only when Pearson flew off solo for a while that the style he's now famous for coalesced.

Hard to guess what role he plays (I'm not quite sure I hear (yet) the sonic distinction you're drawing): when I heard the "Midas Touch" remix I thought, "oh that's rather straightforward for Pearson, maybe that's Al Usher's influence." But then I remembered that the "Manila" remix is fairly straightforward as well...

Vahid never spelt out what he thought of Pearson's transformation. I'd be interested to know.

Ronan I get your point about Guido Schneider remixes etc. I wasn't consciously thinking about it when I made my suggestions upthread but in retrospect they're all major transformations of songs that I ever knew or subsequently heard a lot of in their original versions - so they feel more like remixes than just dance tracks.

Not sure when it's from but I also adore the Sascha Funke remix of Commercial Breakup's "My Garden". Actually put it together with the Alex Smoke mix of "Safari" and you've got a substyle of sorts: vocal tracks emerging from an electro-house sewer, all micro-percussion and insanely repetitive, simple, murky and utterly great basslines. Listen to them together - they are exactly the same! Yet totally different and both brilliant.

(it just occurred to me that the secret of my love for Rebel Futurism 2 is that Damian Lazarus appears to adore tracks like these - almost all of his seections have ridiculously extroverted basslines)

(Sascha's remix of Alexander Kowalski's "Lock Me Up" from a while back is also really good)

(Ronan for more Reverso 68 action check out their remix of Bent's "Comin' Back" from last year. It's not quite in their sparkly nu-balearic style, but it's fantastic, cheesily uplifting electro-disco, like Moonbootica meets meets Metro Area meets Jurgen Paape).

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 23:18 (twenty years ago)

Oh I picked up the Bent remix in Glasgow in April, for 2 pounds or something! It is great, not as good as their best moments but still a really nice record, I almost always play it when doing a warm up set.

I keep meaning to start a thread on remixes, like, do they actually differ from original productions inherently? Can you guess a track is a remix if you've not heard the original? Perhaps some sort of tension? It just seems quite prescient these days, or maybe the answer is just that remixes are no different from original productions. Producer people, would you approach a remix in a different way to an original piece? There must be some good discussion here.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 06:33 (twenty years ago)

Fischerspooner - Just Let Go (Thin White Duke)
Daft Punk - Technologic (Basement Jaxx)
Daft Punk - Robot Rock (Maximum Overdrive - totally f#cked up, but very cool)
Chemical Brothers - Believe (Erol Alkan Feel Me Re-work)
The Kills - The Good Ones (Jagz Kooner)
Juliet - Avalon (JLC)
The Rakes - Retreat (Phones)
Tomas Andersson - Washing Up (Tiga)

Nicole (StarShine), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 08:26 (twenty years ago)

Lindstrom is DJ'ing saturday at the tribeca grand in new york... i haven't heard anything of his/hers/theirs, and only recognzied the name because of this thread.... i guess i should go?

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 15:26 (twenty years ago)

Hard to guess what role he plays (I'm not quite sure I hear (yet) the sonic distinction you're drawing): when I heard the "Midas Touch" remix I thought, "oh that's rather straightforward for Pearson, maybe that's Al Usher's influence." But then I remembered that the "Manila" remix is fairly straightforward as well...

Honestly, the 'Manila' mix is the closest to what I'm getting at ie. the Usher collabs. It's a slight red herring in the solo Pearson mixes because they tend to be a lot more Pet Shop production-esque or Germanic (ie schaffel, or the Playgroup one, which is static on dry ice), while the Freeform one is obviously an out and out electro-freakout. But then, compared to the other two mixes with Usher, 'Midas Touch' almost completely relies on the vocal to make it pop anyway. The Usher stuff tends to aim at extended pop songs with dance touches ie. Dannii Minogue could far more easily pull off 'Inside And Out' or 'Where I Belong' than the 'Train' and 'Strict Machine' mixes. And again, 'Midas Touch' exxcepted, I suspect Al is rather a dab hand at vocal cut-ups, unless there's a Pearson mix or two with these feature I'm forgetting.

Al has done some solo mixes for Cai and Envoy. They are very good, and I freely admit they're also fairly Pearson-esque, but he must be a Moonbootica, Rex or Richard X fan too. I have posited that Ewan made Al up as some kind of extra personality, here on ILM, in fact, but if Pearson's going to share the credits, others should know better too.

Ronan, if you find "nipple" insulting, no wonder you're easy to wind up! Y' big poo head.

Negativa, True Believer (Sheryl Crow in a Britney costume) (Barima), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

AL USHER makes a mean salad. He is also half of PARTIAL ARTS. His first solo effort is an EP of high-tech boogie, with all the bounce, swing and funk of uptempo 70's and 80's disco-soul.

This should pretty much validate his contribution to 'Midas Touch'.

Negativa, True Believer (Sheryl Crow in a Britney costume) (Barima), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 17:32 (twenty years ago)

The Rakes - Retreat (Phones)

WHOA. How does it stack up to the previous Phones mixes? The only ones I really liked were the ones he did for Bloc Party and the Kills.

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

Are anyone else besides Phones and Max Tundra repping for fun indie mixes right now? Phones' mix of Annie is better than the original, but not as good as Alan Braxe's for sure.

Negativa, True Believer (Sheryl Crow in a Britney costume) (Barima), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 18:13 (twenty years ago)

yes phil you should. he was great when i saw him.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 19:10 (twenty years ago)

I give Ewan Pearson credit for records he never made and Florie can fuck off, Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 7 July 2005 01:19 (twenty years ago)

I hear Barima is dating Al Usher.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 7 July 2005 03:17 (twenty years ago)

i'm sad that si begg's remix of radio 4 never got any love. and that i didn't buy it. when i heard it in the shop it sounded genius (yes i know this is 2004, but who cares). for my money, that was a stellar indie mix (of an indie band i couldn't give two fucks about). but who knows, maybe the headphones lied.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Thursday, 7 July 2005 04:22 (twenty years ago)

For gawd's sake, where are Jess and Vahid?

BARMS, Thursday, 7 July 2005 08:14 (twenty years ago)

That M.A.N.D.Y. mix of Laurie Anderson is indeed tip-top - so uplifting!

It's a shame that it's only the one track on the 12 inch - a major deterrent to my impoverished self shelling out cash for it.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 7 July 2005 08:21 (twenty years ago)

The Tiefschwarz Dub of Freeform Five's Electromagnetic is their best work in a long long time. Brilliant. And since it's Tiefschwarz day, the 3 or 4 tracks on Eat Books which weren't leaked are probably the best ones, ie the Tracey Thorn collab (sounds like electro Junk Science just as you would hope), and the other Ed Laliq track (deeper electrohouse). Hence with the Malte track I think Eat Books is almost worth buying, I bought a vinyl copy anyhow.

Also feeling

Freeform Five-Electromagnetic (Lindstrom Remix)

This is part 2 of the re-release of the song. I like the Lindstrom remix of Chicken Lips that Jed recommended too, bought that yesterday.

And although not a remix the new Breastfed single is really good too.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 7 July 2005 10:14 (twenty years ago)

no love for lu cont's "mr. brightside" remix?

mark p (Mark P), Saturday, 9 July 2005 13:16 (twenty years ago)

Mark it's been mentioned several times in this thread! Still my favourite of the year!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 9 July 2005 13:38 (twenty years ago)

thats weird, my find for "brightside" turned up nothing.

anyway i third the notion, it's great.

mark p (Mark P), Saturday, 9 July 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

i just mentioned it on the border community thread, but then i saw this one and thought i'd hype it up here too, just because i love it that much:

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 13:21 (twenty years ago)

Weird, I don't really like that Tiga "E Talking" one greatly.

Think the Tiefschwarz is my new number one.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 13:28 (twenty years ago)

I was singing that all winter!

Ludacris f/ Rare Essence - "Pimpin' All over the World" Go-Go Remix

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 14:17 (twenty years ago)

I'm heavily anticipating the release of the Shortwave Set's Moby remix, as is the baldy himself. Pearson's 'Raining Again' mix is alright.

Still can't shake the notion remixes this year are too thin on the ground for comfort.

BARMS, Tuesday, 2 August 2005 14:32 (twenty years ago)

wondering how to get JoB's 20...

Jesus, this Justice remix of Fatboy Slim's "Don't Let The Man" may be my favorite Justice remix ever.

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Saturday, 6 August 2005 04:07 (twenty years ago)

Not sure if it was actually released in '04 (it's supposedly unreleased), but Richard X's vocal melody rework on Freeform Five - "No More Conversations" is astounding. It's on FF5's Misch Masch mix and I can't stop listening to it!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 6 August 2005 04:33 (twenty years ago)

It's released in September.

Negativa, True Believer (Sheryl Crow in a Britney costume) (Barima), Saturday, 6 August 2005 10:21 (twenty years ago)

Moby - 'Dream About Me' (The Shortwave Set's Pick 'n' Mix)

Is a work of trembling Cornelian beauty.

Drowning Man (Barima), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 09:06 (twenty years ago)

The Putsch 79 remix of the Juan Maclean's "Give Me Every Little Thing" is so so good. I played it at around 12.30 last night and when I went back on again at about 1.45 I had to really force myself not to play it again!

It's like "Wordy Rapping Hood" 2005 or something!

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 16 September 2005 12:04 (twenty years ago)

Death From Above 1979 - Black History Month (Alan Braxe & Fred Falke Remix)

Would you mind posting the putsch 79 remix? Been searching for it forever.

Rihanna f/ Fatman Scoop - "Pon De Remix"

SHAKE YOUR HOUSE KEYS

Al (sitcom), Friday, 16 September 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

That Moby mix really is a collision or midway between two of the decade's best ballad remixes (Kings of Convenience/Andy Votel and Cru-L Grand Orchestra/Cornelius). Fucking floors me.

The Braxe and Falke is also pretty fly, but the best indie-dance mix of the year is still Phones vs Bloc Party. The Cut Copy remixes on that Modular mix up above have me anticipating.

Who the hell do you THINK I am? I'm the goddamn Batman! (Barima), Friday, 16 September 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

I just got the vinyl yesterday, and it's quite tricky for me to digitise since I don't have an mp3 player with a line out or minidisc player anymore. I can try and get an mp3 off a friend though.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 16 September 2005 15:23 (twenty years ago)

any news on the release date on this modular comp?

Arnault (arc73hk), Thursday, 22 September 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

today i thought of this thread when i heard :

DFA remix of Dare by Gorillaz.

if you like the wiggly DFA excess then search/hunt/kill for this vinyl only track. though i suspect you p2p people have already got it on your hard drives.

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 22 September 2005 16:27 (twenty years ago)

we've been chatting about them elsewhere, but these 3 are pretty great

breezy, Thursday, 22 September 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

any news on the release date on this modular comp?

Amazon says October 4th. They're listing it as $23.99, for a two-disc import, which is surprisingly reasonable of them.

Telephonething (Telephonething), Friday, 23 September 2005 00:43 (twenty years ago)

jimmy glass (electricsound), Friday, 23 September 2005 00:48 (twenty years ago)

Audion: Just Fucking (Roman Flügel's 23 Positions in A One-Night Stand Remix)

you wouldnt believe it when you hear it at home, but this actually works better than the original! the clippedness is utterly hypnotic, spiralling up and up

Four Tet: Sun Drums And Soil (Sa-Ra Creative Partners On The Move Mix)

they managed to make four tet fun

Hung Gam Bou: the chubby lightning (FE7), Saturday, 24 September 2005 12:39 (twenty years ago)

sparky, Tuesday, 18 October 2005 12:10 (twenty years ago)

just got the modular presents leave them all behind super remix compile. it's really good. hasn't left my stereo once.

the best tracks on there are:

death from above 1979 - romantic rights (erol alkan re-edit)
midnight juggernauts - 45 and rising (cutcopy remix)
chromeo - me and my man (whitey remix)

the death from above tune has such a good build up, the midnight juggernauts one forces you to get up and dance, the chromeo one is too cool for it's own right. there's other great stuff on there too.

smithsonian, Friday, 21 October 2005 00:31 (twenty years ago)

WINNER:

madonna - hung up (struart price/lacques lu cont extended dub)

RUNNER UP:

my discovery this week :
the Booka Shade remix of Tahiti 80's Big day...
It's so addictive... Now i know why people get obsessed about Booka Shade

Arnault (arc73hk), Saturday, 22 October 2005 10:48 (twenty years ago)

is that a new remix Arnault?

new contenders for me

dfa1979-romantic rights (jesper dahlback remix)
mathias schafhauser-coincidence (trentemoller mix)

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 22 October 2005 10:51 (twenty years ago)

yes, its on the BIG DAY EP, out on october 10. There is also a whomadewho mix but not half as good....
Oh, Ronan, thanks for the top on White rose movement blackstrobe mix... the best thing blackstrobe has made for a while.
Now I need to hunt that DFA1979 mix (the Alan Braxe remix of Black history month is pretty good as well)

Arnault (arc73hk), Saturday, 22 October 2005 11:14 (twenty years ago)

I'll go with whoever said Jacques Lu Cont's version of Missy's "Lose Control".

Nick H (Nick H), Saturday, 22 October 2005 15:44 (twenty years ago)

RETREAT - THE RAKES (phones remix)

piscesboy, Tuesday, 25 October 2005 11:51 (twenty years ago)

I think the Rexmix of 'Drop The Pressure' may end up being my single fave this year, much like 'Heartbeats' was 1st= last year.

BARMS, Tuesday, 25 October 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

Depeche Mode, Pain that i'm used to, Jacques Lu Conte remix

Jez Beach, Friday, 23 December 2005 22:55 (twenty years ago)

JCL owns this thread because the Madonna remix is great too, although I'd pick the Missy one as the best.

Nick H (Nick H), Saturday, 24 December 2005 14:20 (twenty years ago)

"just let go - TWD remix) - fischerspooner"

whoa - that acid build up is just too intense.

what a fantastic remix. ta for that recomendation

surely we should be able to hassle some record label bod to fund a TWD/JLC mix/remix album ?

with his current profile these days it would fly off the shelves ..

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 29 December 2005 11:48 (twenty years ago)

Yeah it's quite bizarre that he hasn't fronted a release in the past 12 months (the reissue of Darkdancer doesn't really count).

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 29 December 2005 14:55 (twenty years ago)

Franz Ferdinand - 'Do You Want To' (Max Tundra Mix)

The lost hair metal song from Discovery, pretty much.

Hal! Jordan! HAL! JORDAN! (Barima), Thursday, 29 December 2005 15:44 (twenty years ago)
